Goldfish Funerals and Other Life Lessons

Hello Lincolnway! First off, I’d like to welcome The Cottages of New Lenox, Body Tech Total Fitness, Randi Lynn Quigley, and Murray and Regan Law to the City Lifestyle family. We're truly excited to have them join our platform and love what they bring to our community.

This issue holds a special place in my heart. Children are more than just the future—they are the heartbeat of our communities today. Their laughter, their curiosity, and their potential shape the world in ways we can’t fully measure.

As parents, influencers and caregivers, we put so much effort into nurturing their growth, teaching them, and investing in their futures. But let’s not forget that children also shape us—they bring joy, laughter, and meaning to our lives.

We also cannot overlook the powerful role pets play in our families. They offer unconditional love and teach us valuable lessons in empathy, responsibility, and companionship. The bond between kids and their pets can be transformative, fostering emotional connections that last a lifetime.

I have been the proud owner of seven dogs, six cats, countless fish, and one rabbit. Many of these pets were my decisions while some were forced upon me by my three children's relentless begging. Either way, they offered to all of us everything that was cited above along with the key learnings associated with loss. Whether it was the flushing of expired fish or the euthanizing of the family dog or cat, my children realized early that loss is a real part of life.

At the core of both children and pets is a simple truth—they need us. Our care and attention shape who they become, and in turn, they shape us. This issue is dedicated to celebrating the kids and pets who fill our homes and lives with joy and love.

Enjoy our stories about the people, and organizations, who influence and care for our kids and pets. It's another reason why Lincolnway is such a great place to be!

All the best,

August 2025

Big Hearts & Little Hands

At Kids Can Do Pediatric Therapy in Mokena, every milestone is celebrated, every child is met with compassion, and every family is supported from day one. Founded in 1988, the clinic has become a trusted resource for local families seeking occupational, physical, and speech therapy for their children. In 2018, after over a decade of working side by side, four dedicated therapists—Erica Kluck, Marijo Kleinfelder, Marcy Munger, and Angie Andrus—stepped into ownership to carry the legacy forward.

The Power of Pediatric Therapy

“After so many years together, we’d become friends and built a deep loyalty to this place,” says Erica. “We wanted to make sure Kids Can Do continued to be a home for families and therapists alike.”

Together, the team represents all three therapy areas and brings a wide range of specialties—from

helping babies with feeding difficulties to supporting kids with sensory needs, speech delays, or motor challenges. They work with children from birth through young adulthood, focusing especially on early intervention and working closely with parents.

Families are encouraged to be active participants in therapy, whether observing sessions through one-way windows or joining their child on the therapy floor. “We make sure parents know how to help their child at home,” Erica explains. “That teamwork makes all the difference.”

Whether it’s a toddler taking their first steps or a preschooler finding their voice, Kids Can Do is there to cheer them on. “It’s the little wins,” Erica says, “that mean the most.”

Healing Hooves

THE POWER OF EQUINE THERAPY

At just 16, Anna Ramirez felt lost—until a literal sign sparked her path. Passing a construction site, she prayed for guidance, asking God for a “large flashing sign.” Moments later, a billboard lit up: “Call Good Samaritans Boys Ranch Today!” That call led her to discover equine therapy, and years later, to found HHH Ranch in Manhattan, Illinois.

Short for Hands, Hooves & Hope, HHH Ranch is a sanctuary where rescued animals help children, families, and adults heal emotionally, physically, and mentally.

“We welcome everyone,” says Anna, “no matter where they are in life.”

The ranch offers programs like horseback riding, Stable Moments mentorship for foster and adopted youth, and even an Itsy Bitsy Farmers class for children as young as six weeks. Many kids build deep, life-changing bonds with animals—like Adinah, who found hope in a horse named Chief after struggling post-COVID.

The animals, all rescues, teach empathy, responsibility, and emotional regulation.

“We’re not just helping kids ride,” Anna explains. “We’re helping them grow.”

As the need grows, HHH is launching a capital campaign to expand to a larger facility. With strong community support and a donor willing to match the first $200,000, Anna’s vision is galloping toward a brighter future.

HEALTHY SMILES START EARLY

At what age should parents start thinking about braces?

Julie Gardner of Associated Orthodontists recommends age seven as the ideal time. By then, children usually have enough permanent teeth for an orthodontist to identify alignment issues like crowding, overbites, underbites, or crossbites. Early evaluations allow for timely treatment, preventing more invasive and costly procedures later while improving overall oral health and comfort for growing kids.

Common dental problems in children include crowded teeth, misaligned bites, and jaw alignment issues. Catching these early often means treatment can be simpler, shorter, and more effective. Early care also ensures a child’s mouth has enough space for all permanent teeth to come in correctly, supporting proper speech, chewing, and overall development.

Good dental habits at home are essential. Gardner stresses brushing twice daily for two minutes, or four

times daily for kids with braces, plus flossing every day. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains benefits both oral and overall health.

Julie often sees crowding and bite issues but says many can be minimized or prevented with early evaluation and consistent home care. She encourages parents to lead by example, bring children to the dentist within their first year, and teach proper brushing with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush. Making oral hygiene fun—with music, timers, or apps—and letting kids choose their toothbrush and toothpaste can boost engagement.

If braces are needed, Associated Orthodontists makes the process enjoyable with welcome kits, contests, and rewards. Creating a positive experience helps kids feel comfortable and motivated throughout their orthodontic journey. After all, a healthy, confident smile can boost self-esteem and set the foundation for a lifetime of good oral health.

lunches for dental health

Packing lunches that support dental health doesn’t have to be boring!

Choose soft, nutrient-rich foods that are easy to chew—especially for kids with braces. Try whole grain wraps with turkey or hummus, yogurt cups, soft fruits like bananas or sliced strawberries, and hardboiled eggs. Include a small bottle of water or milk to rinse away food particles.

Avoid sticky fruit snacks, popcorn, chips, hard candies, or anything overly sugary, crunchy, or chewy, as these can damage tooth enamel, loosen brackets, or break braces.

Pro tip: Let kids help pack their lunch to give them a sense of ownership—and make tooth-friendly choices more fun, empowering healthy habits that last a lifetime.

How Attack Volleyball Builds More Than Just Athletes

ARTICLE BY NICOLE SWANBERG WRIGHT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEAN LACHAT PHOTOGRAPHY

At Attack Volleyball Club, growth is the game plan—both on and off the court. Through a focus on fundamentals, leadership, and mental resilience, the program aims to shape not only skilled players, but confident, well-rounded individuals. By fostering a love of the game and teaching athletes how to navigate challenges, both personal and competitive, the club nurtures development that lasts well beyond the season. With a culture grounded in consistency, encouragement, and hard work, Attack sets the standard for youth volleyball in the region.

Leading that vision is the club’s owner Pam Campbell, who has helped transform the club into a place where athletes thrive. “Skill development, character building, and a supportive environment are the foundation of everything we do,” she says.

From the earliest age groups to elite teams, Attack’s coaches prioritize mastering the fundamentals and build confidence through repetition, consistency, and game-like drills. “Volleyball knowledge matters

as much as raw talent,” she adds. “We want players to understand the game, make smart decisions, and become leaders.”

Attack’s master coaching philosophy ensures every athlete, regardless of team, gets the same high-level training and immediate feedback. “We slow things down when needed and make sure everyone is progressing,” says Pam. “Culture is everything, and we’ve worked hard to make ours unified and positive.”

Mental and emotional well-being are also a core focus. “We talk about bullying, mental health, and what’s going on in their lives,” Pam explains. “Our gym is a safe place, and we nip issues early before they grow.”

The results speak for themselves. This year’s 15 Select team is a standout—impressing college recruiters and embodying Attack’s core values of teamwork, grit, and discipline. “They work hard, together, and never give up,” says Pam proudly.

Long-term, Attack athletes leave with more than trophies. They gain confidence, time management skills, leadership, and the ability to be exceptional teammates—traits that serve them far beyond volleyball.

“We’re not just building volleyball players,” Pam emphasizes. “We’re building strong, well-rounded individuals who are ready for whatever comes next.” For more information about the Attack Volleyball, visit www.attackvolleyballclub.net .

Pets have an extraordinary way of capturing our hearts from the very moment they enter our lives. With their goofy personalities, constant companionship, and boundless, unconditional love, they quickly become an irreplaceable part of the family. For many of us, they are our first “kids”—our training wheels for parenthood, our late-night cuddle buddies, and our most loyal companions. Whether it’s the wiggly excitement of a dog welcoming you home or the quiet contentment of a purring cat curled at your feet, these everyday moments become the heartbeat of home.

That deep, soul-level connection we share with our pets deserves to be honored. A custom portrait is more than a pretty picture—it’s a lasting tribute to the joy, laughter, and warmth they bring into our lives every single day. It freezes a fleeting moment in time and transforms it into a tangible piece of your family’s story.

Photographing pets is a bit like photographing toddlers—full of movement, unpredictability, and yes, a few tasty bribes! But the magic lies in those spontaneous, unscripted moments. When we catch the perfect tilt of a head, the sparkle in their eyes, or the wag of a tail, we’re capturing who they truly are—and that’s what makes each portrait so meaningful.

We all wish our pets could stay with us forever. Their time with us is never long enough, but a beautifully crafted portrait helps preserve their memory and their spirit. It’s a way to hold them close, to keep their presence alive in your home and in your heart—even after they’re gone.

At Jean Lachat Photography, everything from tabletop prints to wall art is offered, all designed to reflect your pet’s unique personality and your family’s style. Let us help you celebrate your beloved companion in a way that lasts a lifetime.

Because they’re not just pets, they’re family.

Friday Night Lights, Lifelong Lessons

ARTICLE BY NICOLE SWANBERG WRIGHT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEAN LACHAT PHOTOGRAPHY
We’re not just coaching plays,” Coach Zvonar emphasizes.
“We’re shaping men.”

When Rob Zvonar accepted a job at Lincoln-Way High School fresh out of college, he never imagined that his first coaching role would turn into his destination job — or that it would evolve into one of the most dominant and culture-defining football programs in Illinois history. Now entering his 32nd year with the district and his 25th year as head coach of Lincoln-Way East, his influence reaches far beyond the end zones.

This month, LincolnWay City Lifestyle got an exclusive inside look into the program — and what makes the Griffins’ culture one of a kind.

What Zvonar has built over the past two decades is more than a football team. It’s a legacy.

He began his coaching career at the original Lincoln-Way High School in 1994 before becoming the first head coach of the newly formed Lincoln-Way East football program in 2001. With no seniors on the roster that inaugural season, few expected the team to make waves — but they did. The Griffins finished 6–4 and qualified for the playoffs, setting a tone of excellence and resilience that would define the program for years to come.

Since then, Lincoln-Way East has appeared in the playoffs every single year — 24 consecutive seasons and counting — marking a streak unmatched in Illinois history. Under Zvonar’s leadership, the team has compiled a 244–45 overall record, boasting the highest winning percentage in state history (84.4%) for programs with at least 250 games played. They’ve secured three Class 8A State Championships (2005, 2017, 2019) and finished as state runners-up three additional times.

The program’s recent dominance is particularly striking: over the last 100 games, the Griffins are 93–7. “Five of those losses are to Loyola

Academy,” Coach Zvonar says with a grin. “Our day will come.”

Ask Coach Zvonar how this kind of sustained success is possible, and he’ll humbly point to what he calls his “Five Tools”: support of the community through robust youth programs, amazing administration, faculty, and staff that prioritize student success, supportive parents who trust the process, an incredible coaching staff (many of whom are former players), and outstanding players who buy into the program, year after year.

These five elements, he says, “work together like gears in a machine. If one gear breaks, the whole thing stutters. But when everything is aligned — that’s when the magic happens.”

With over 230 student-athletes currently in the program, Lincoln-Way East is more than just a football team — it’s a community institution. “We’re not just coaching plays,” Rob says. “We’re shaping men.”

The backbone of Coach Zvonar’s coaching philosophy is relationship-building. One of his core principles? “Rules without relationships = rebellion. Rules with relationships = results.”

Those words aren’t just painted on a locker room wall; they’re lived every day by coaches and players alike. The Griffins run an almost year-round program, with four-day-a-week engagements from January through May, and full summer conditioning. But it’s not all sprints and scrimmages. The football coaches and staff focus just as much on accountability, self-esteem, and character development.

Over the years, more than 200 players have gone on to play college football, and four have reached the NFL. But the true measure of success? The thousands of alumni who have become

CONTINUED >

surgeons, entrepreneurs, teachers, tradespeople, city leaders, and military servicemen. “Football was just the vehicle,” Rob says. “Our real goal is to help these young men find out who they are — and who they want to be.”

One of the most unique aspects of Lincoln-Way East’s program is its coaching staff: half of the coaches are former players. That continuity isn’t just a testament to the strength of the program — it’s proof of the enduring impact Coach Zvonar has had on his players. Those who once wore the Griffins jersey now walk the sidelines, shaping the next generation the same way they were shaped.

It’s a full-circle story, repeated over and over in the hallways and huddles of Lincoln-Way East.

With another playoff run on the horizon and a new roster of hungry, talented athletes, Coach Zvonar isn’t slowing down. He’s still driven by the same things that brought him here — a love for the game, a deep respect for his players, and a belief in what football can teach when done right.

“It’s never been about just winning games,” he reflects. “It’s about building something that lasts — on the field, in the classroom, and in life.”

As the 2025 season kicks off, one thing is clear: at Lincoln-Way East, the legacy continues — one heartbeat, one game, one young man at a time.

Inspiring the Future

Joliet Junior College Leads with Heart and Vision

At Joliet Junior College (JJC)—recognized as the first public community college in the United States—education is more than a classroom experience. It’s a bridge to opportunity, connection, and lifelong growth. Under the leadership of Dr. Clyne G.H. Namuo, the College’s 10th president, JJC is introducing innovative programs that serve students of all ages and backgrounds, including initiatives that directly support kids, families, and the broader community.

Dr. Namuo is committed to embedding JJC into the community it serves and creating educational pathways with lasting generational impact. His vision focuses on inclusivity, academic excellence, and civic engagement. With an academic background in higher education strategy, information systems, and marketing, he brings both experience and heart to his leadership. He also serves on several local boards, including the Will County Center for Economic Development, Greater Joliet Area YMCA, Grundy Economic Development Council, and Will County Habitat for Humanity.

Programs like  Future Wolves  introduce young learners to college early. An outreach initiative aimed at building relationships with K-5 students within the college’s seven-county district, this  week-long summer camp invites students to explore subjects like art, science, and sports in a fun, hands-on environment. More than 100 children have participated

so far, supported by a $50,000 grant from Constellation Energy.

Inspired by this outreach, JJC created the Mobile Planetarium—an inflatable, traveling dome set up in elementary school gyms. To date, over 8,000 students and teachers have experienced its immersive educational shows.

“We want to make college feel accessible to every child,” said Dr. Namuo. “It’s about creating pathways, not obstacles.”

The 12x12x12 Dual Credit initiative offers high school students a powerful head start by allowing them to take college-level courses in the comfort of their high school. Participants can earn up to 12 college credits, at $12 per credit hour, by 12th grade — significantly reducing both the time and cost of a college education. Especially impactful for first-generation and underserved students, the program combines dual credit coursework with advising and support to build confidence and college readiness.

Dr. Namuo, 10th President of Joliet Junior College

In April 2024, JJC was designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) as Hispanic enrollment reached 33%. This allows the college to pursue federal funding to expand scholarships, academic support, and culturally responsive services for Hispanic and Latinx students.

Opening this fall, the Crawford Honors College—made possible by a generous grant from Dr.Curtis and Mrs. Gina Crawford—will welcome its first 26 students. The program offers financial coverage, honors-level curriculum, research opportunities, priority advising, study abroad options, and a vibrant community of scholars.

Workforce development is also a major priority. The Workforce Equity Initiative (WEI), funded by $850,000 in grants, offers training in high-demand careers like commercial truck

driving and EKG technology—complete with stipends, transportation, and supplies. The After 22 Program serves neurodiverse adults with vocational classes such as Art & Entrepreneurship and Around the World Cooking, helping students gain confidence, independence, and practical skills.

The college also earned an IDEAS Grant to create a study abroad experience for veterinary and environmental science students exploring global conservation through the “One Health” approach.

What’s ahead? Expansion westward into Grundy County in the city of Morris, with a focus on advanced manufacturing, and stronger high school partnerships to the east to extend dual credit programs—eventually seeing high schoolers graduate with associate degrees.

When asked what he hopes to ultimately be known for, Dr. Namuo said: “I want to make sure I leave JJC better than I found it. I want to uplift a generation, and higher education is a strong vehicle for that.”
