How to Take Care

Grey Hair of Your Colored Hair

When you start tuning gray, your hair becomes more wiry and coarse. Incorporating hydration and oils can help soften it, and make it more manageable. In fact, Kevin Murphy came out with a line specific to this need. Young Again Wash, Rinse and Oil contains immortelle, an ingredient which helps reverse the signs of aging and adds the nutrients back in that are missing.

If you color your grays: make sure you’re using a color safe shampoo, so you aren’t stripping your color.

If you’re embracing your natural gray: if you start seeing yellowing, use a purple shampoo to help balance tha to create that beautiful, neutral gray.

Vibrant Hair

For red and bright colors, use a line designed to protect against fading. Kevin Murphy’s Everlasting Colour enhances vibrancy, strengthens, repairs, and adds UV protection to keep your shade lasting longer. Another way to make that color last, it to not wash it as often. This will give less chances to have that beautiful color run down the drain.

pro tip: When you do wash your hair, do your final rinse with cold water. This will close the cuticle and seal those color molecules in place.

pro tip: Need to temperately cover your grays? Root coverup spray can hide your roots and get your though until your next color touch up!

Blonde Hair

Lightening opens the cuticle and can cause damage. Keep your hair healthy with hydrating shampoo/conditioner like the Kevin Murphy Blonde Angel Wash and Rinse, weekly deep conditioning treatments, and daily oils. If it feels weak, add protein sparingly. Wash less often to let natural oils protect it.

pro tip: Dilute purple shampoo to keep blonde fresh and brass-free.

H O P E

Begins with YOU A SEASON TO SEE THE UNSEEN

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.

GRATITUDE IS A game changer

JAMIE BARNES ON HOW GRATITUDE HAS AFFECTED HER LIFE
ARTICLE BY ASHLEY PETERSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNIFER PRATT

Meet Jamie and Jim Barnes, the owners of Home Sweet Home Smart Cookies Academy! Jamie grew up in Mapleton, and Jim grew up in Lehi. They’ve been married since 1992 and have four kids. Their first kids are twins, so they jumped into parenthood quickly!

Jamie took her first babysitting job at 11 years old. She watched four children and was paid with a bag of pennies! “I always knew it was my life calling. Kids are drawn to me, and I just love being around them.” She started her in-home childcare business in 1996, when her twins were 18 months old, and has been licensed by the state of Utah since 2005. In 2008, Jamie felt the call to expand her business to a childcare center. “Moms were coming to my door crying because they needed childcare and everywhere was full.” She prayed, “If you want me to do this, I will do this. You open the doors and I will walk through them.” And the doors just kept opening. Jim was working as a truck driver at the time, and work was slowing down. Jamie suggested he quit his job and join her as a partner at the center. She didn’t think he’d be for it, but he was! “We worked as a team—he did the cooking and cleaning, and I did most of the caretaking. To this day, we run into grown-up kids who rave about Jim’s pancakes and French toast.”

Now, Jamie and Jim have about 130 kids enrolled, with an average of 70 kids in attendance every day. Jamie’s goal for

opening a center was to care for more children, while still providing a place that feels like home.

“We welcome children with hugs and a family feel.”

Home Sweet Home Smart Cookies Academy has a unique setup, with every ‘cookie’ class moves between rooms like math and science centers for child-led learning, an indoor gym, and playrooms. The environment shift helps kids stay engaged and active.

Gratitude has been a big game changer for Jamie’s life. “The more you practice it, the more it expands your heart. The more gratitude you have, the less things bother you. I try to live it by serving others—listening, giving hugs, lifting people when they need it.”

of caring for 70-plus children. She grew up with a learning disability, battled depression and anxiety, has lived with Graves’ disease since she was a teen, survived breast cancer and lost her mom to breast cancer. “Through all of it, I feel blessed and grateful.”

Jamie says there’s only one way she’s overcome adversity—through the Savior. “I wake up every morning and just keep going.

“Through all of it, I feel blessed and grateful.” — Jamie Barnes

Jamie has overcome a lot of adversity in her life through the practice of gratitude. The first couple of years of running the center were really hard for her. Through her Child Development Associate certification and her vast experience, she knew a lot about childcare and child development, but didn’t feel like she knew anything about running a business or carrying the weight

Family support is huge, too. My husband and I are business partners. He always believes in me and supports my ideas, no matter how crazy they sound.” Jamie continues to lead with love at Home Sweet Home Smart Cookies

Academy, becoming a better business owner as time goes on, while dealing with the rest of her trials, through gratitude.

This month, practice bringing gratitude into your life to overcome the adversity in your life. Like Jamie, you can live gratitude by serving others, and practicing being thankful, expanding your heart and learning to let things go.

HONEY ROASTED CARROTS WITH LABNEH AND FRESH DILL

Ingredients: 10 carrots, ½ cup fresh dill, 3 sprigs of thyme, 1 cup labneh, 2 tablespoons honey, 2-3 tablespoons olive oil

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 400° F

2. Wash, peel, and prep your carrots. If carrots are skinny, you can peel them and place them onto a cookie sheet. If the carrots are thicker in diameter you can cut them lengthwise into halves.

3. Drizzle honey and olive oil over carrots on baking sheet. Use your hands to make sure the carrots are properly coated on all sides.

4. Add salt and pepper

5. Bake in the oven at 400° F for about 25-30 minutes

6. Take them out of the oven and set aside

CRISPY POTATOES

7. On a large serving plate add about a cup (or more) of labneh. My favorite is called Luretik.

8. Add your carrots then freshly chopped dill and thyme to the top

9. Drizzle a good olive oil over the whole thing

Hosting Tip: “Ask for help from the right people. Some people aren’t going to be comfortable making bread rolls or a dessert, but maybe they’re great at making salad. Others can be asked to bring drinks or clean afterward. Nobody is a mindreader—don’t be afraid to set up a spreadsheet where they can sign up!”

Ingredients: 10 small yellow gold potatoes, 1/2 tablespoon baking soda, olive oil, salt, rosemary, garlic, chives (optional)

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 400° F

2. In a large Dutch oven, bring water, baking soda, and salt to a boil. Place unpeeled potatoes into the water and reduce the heat to medium-low. Once the potatoes are soft to touch (20-25 min), drain and let sit for 10 minutes.

3. On a cutting board, grab a potato and use any large object (wine bottle, glass jar) and smash down the potato. Do this gently and have a spatula close by to transfer to

HONEYNUT SQUASH

a baking dish. Once you have smashed all the potatoes, add salt and olive oil.

4. Place in oven and roast for 20 minutes or until crispy

5. Top with the garlic, rosemary, and fresh chives

Cooking tip: “I don’t peel my potatoes because who really has time for that? The secret to this recipe: baking soda. The baking soda makes the water alkaline which helps break down the surface of the potatoes, making them very crispy and very delicious.”

Ingredients: 3 honeynut squash, olive oil, salt, pepper, smoked paprika, pomegranates

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 400° F

2. Slice the squashes in half, remove all the seeds

3. Add olive oil, salt, and pepper and roast for 30 minutes

4. Add smoked paprika and pomegranates to serve

Hosting tip: “It’s all in the way you present it to kids…when you ask your kids to join, try not to make it sound like a punishment. Emphasize that they have a responsibility prepping really yummy food. Include a special drink for the kids while they’re helping, like spiced apple cider. Adjust your expectations to allow for extra mess, extra time, and know it won’t turn out exactly as if you had done it yourself. But the tradeoff of creating happy memories is 100% worth it.”

CARAMEL CHEESECAKE

Ingredients

Crust

• 12 graham crackers

• 6 tablespoons unsalted butter

• 1⁄4 cup brown sugar

Filling

• 4 sticks of cream cheese (room temp)

• 1-1⁄2 cup sugar

• 5 large eggs (room temp)

Directions

Preheat oven to 350° F

Crust

• 2-1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla

• 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

• zest of whole lemon

Caramel

• 1-1⁄4 cup sugar

• 1-1⁄3 cup water

• 1 cup heavy whipping cream

• 1 cup unsalted or salted butter

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. In a food processor, add the graham crackers, butter, and brown sugar. Blend until sand-like texture.

2. In a springform pan, add parchment paper and butter the sides

3. Place crust into the pan and pat down to form a smooth base

4. Set in the fridge and chill for 15 minutes

Filling

1. Add the cream cheese to a standing mixer. Make sure it’s room temperature—this is an important step!

2. With your whisk attachment on medium speed, mix the cream cheese. Once it becomes fluffy, add the sugar and one egg at a time. Scrape down sides as needed.

3. Remove the pan with the crust from the fridge, add the batter to the pan, and place into your preheated oven for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

4. Remove from the oven and let sit. Once cool, cover and place in the fridge.

Caramel

1. In a saucepan, add the sugar and water. Whisk until the sugar is dissolved. Keep heat on medium. Watch the sugar water—it will slowly go from a light brown to a rich amber color.

2 . Once it turns amber in color, add the heavy whipping cream and butter and whisk

3. Turn the heat off and let sit for 5 minutes

4. Remove cheesecake from the fridge and add the caramel to the top

A PLACE OF RESTORATION, CONNECTION, AND POSSIBILITY

KANGIE DAWBER'S OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE OVER SAGE CANVAS ARRIVED WHEN SHE NEEDED IT MOST

we rise. “I’ve had different losses in my life ….  that contributed to my understanding and awareness that community is so important—and supporting each other in as many ways as we possibly can.”

That sense of community shines through in everything she does. One program Kangie implemented at Sage Canvas is a monthly farmers market for kids, where children set up their own booths and sell crafts, treats, or whatever they dream up. “I've been homeschooling my kids for four years, and I just see the benefit of having them explore the way a business would look in the future for them and just getting creative and creating those core memories.”

Kangie’s goal is to provide a community space where people from “all different walks of life can be comfortable… and find the healing path back to themselves.” Sage Canvas is also a gathering place for the wider community. Kangie rents out the space for bridal showers, baby showers, weddings, and other private events.

Other therapeutic practices, expanded by local practitioners sharing their expertise, also fill the calendar, including meditation, Reiki, foot zoning, and vibroacoustic and BrainTap therapies. Recently, Sage Canvas added ecstatic dance and a monthly drum circle, and this November, Kangie is launching a

hands-on after-school program for ages 7–12. It’s a STEM-focused “hands-on journey blending science, art, and movement,” where “students explore sound and vibration, fascial movement, plant growth with electroculture, and the beauty of sacred geometry.”

Kangie encourages newcomers not to be deterred by the breadth of the choices available.  She believes everyone’s journey is individual, “but if it feels a little overwhelming, the sound bath is a good start. It’s a gentle approach into it all.” She recommends patrons come to the Saturday Soundbath in the morning, go explore Main Street while the regular vendors set up, and then come back and take a look at the “sacred treasures” at the Monthly Vendor’s Market.

For Kangie, Sage Canvas is about more than offering services— it’s about equipping people with tools they can put into practice every day. “We can study … or read how to do something … to improve ourselves, but we don't actually use it. We just read about it, we don't think of it as a tool that we can use right now, but you can choose … when you need that certain tool…. Even if it's just taking a few moments to breathe.”

Kangie’s Sage Canvas is a place of restoration, connection, and possibility—a space where people leave feeling lighter, stronger, and more rooted in themselves than when they arrived.

Flip the Gratitude Switch

AUTHOR KEVIN CLAYSON ON THE TEN YEAR

ANNIVERSARY OF HIS BOOK

ARTICLE BY ASHLEY PETERSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Kevin Clayson published his book, Flip The Gratitude Switch, nearly ten years ago in 2016. The ultimate guide on creating true happiness in your life, Flip The Gratitude Switch teaches you how to find, cultivate, and activate gratitude, regardless of your life circumstances. Kevin says “Gratitude is easy when life is good. But what about when the deck is stacked against you? That’s where flipping the gratitude switch comes in. It’s like walking into a dark room—you’ll stumble until you flip the switch. Gratitude doesn’t change the room, but it lets you see and navigate it.” We can’t control what happens to us, but we can choose how to respond. Flip The Gratitude Switch teaches how to be grateful inside frustration, using what Kevin calls tactical gratitude. “It can literally change your brain and physiology, shifting difficulties into fuel for happiness and progress.” With Flip The Gratitude Switch, gratitude becomes something you do, instead of something you feel, changing the trajectory of your life one small and simple decision at a time.

Kevin grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and now lives in Orem. He started his career as a mortgage loan officer, and now owns a real estate investment firm. He never anticipated being an entrepreneur. “I thought I’d be a teacher because I love to teach and speak. And I am a teacher, just in a different way—through books, talks, podcasts, and content.” He discovered the power of gratitude during a time when he felt overwhelmed and unfulfilled. “I’ve learned there’s neuroscience, decades of research, and incredible stories—even from the Holocaust—of people using tactical gratitude to illuminate the path forward.”

When Kevin goes through the FLIP formula with an audience, he uses stubbing your toe as an example, because “it hurts, it’s universal, and it shows how frustration spirals.” They Find the frustration (stubbing your toe), Look for what’s awesome, Install gratitude, and Power up with gratifuel. At first, it’s silent when Kevin asks what could be awesome about stubbing your toe. Then more and more hands go up, and the energy in the room shifts. “I tell them, we just did a brain experiment. Flipping the gratitude switch is offering your brain pinpointed suggestions at key moments that change thought processes and outcomes. We’re slowing down the 'brain train' and switching it onto a new track. You can literally feel the shift in the room. That’s my favorite moment when I speak.”

To celebrate 10 years of Flip The Gratitude Switch, Kevin is giving away 10,000 digital copies, audiobooks and courses, because he wants people to discover an idea that could change something they’re going through in the exact moment they need it. When writing Flip The Gratitude Switch, Kevin knew he wanted readers to engage however they want. “Nobody reads a book cover to cover—what matters is one big idea that changes them.”

To receive your free copy, go to gratifuel.com. Begin rewriting your story, guaranteeing it will have a happy ending with the simple 4-step FLIP formula. “All it takes is one FLIP... that single moment when you decide that you want to stop thinking about the life you should be living and actually start living it!” Flip the gratitude switch with the definitive gratitude how-to guide!
