Art is what you make it... WE REALLY ENJOY OUR ANNUAL ARTS & MAKERS ISSUE. While we are committed to supporting our local artist community throughout the year, February allows a deep dive into the scene. endeavor can be described as art so long as we bring a passion and creativity to what we do on a daily basis. Case in point? Many of us would never think of a dentist as an artist, but as Dr. Wollmann shows in one of our features this month, his passion for learning and finding ways to solve seemingly unrelated problems led to a breakthrough in his own health and now we helps others. Two of the many factors that drew me to Loudoun County was the art scene and the entrepreneurial spirit that brings so much life to our area. The core of both of these is following a passion and bringing that passion to the world around us so others can enjoy. We've found four "traditional" artists to profile, who all battled through something and now bring us their work. We also noticed a booming local bakery scene and wanted to explore what some of them had to offer...artful in their own right. Our local breweries, distilleries, restaurants and vineyards are another piece of this tapestry, and we wanted to highlight that community in this issue as well.

The Ampersand Project Made The Holidays Merry for All By Christmas, The Ampersand Project had served more than 66,000 lunches to the needy. Law firms Burnett & Williams and Dunlap Bennett & Ludwig figured they’d need presents too. With the help of “personal shoppers” who donated gifts, they were able to put gifts and socks in the hands of more than 430 children from more than 136 families.
First Annual Progressive Christmas Shopping Trip Before Christmas, an intrepid band of women — all supporters of and in most cases themselves female business owners — conducted the "First Annual Progressive Christmas Shopping Trip." The shopping stroll was intended to provide both patronage and encouragement to fellow business owners when downtown shopping was threatened by the COVID crisis. Participating: Threase Bake, Evelyn Butler, Carolyn DiPrinzio, Melinda Gipson, Cathy Hoag, Tina Johnson, and Zoey Sahin.

DRY HOME DONATION RESCUES THERAPY DOG CHARITY Life under COVID has been tough for many non-profits, but they were particularly rough for SummitDog.org. The therapy dog organization was no longer allowed to do visits with their dogs so their donation stream virtually ceased. Like many non-profits, the organization operated out of its founder’s home, which was hit by a severe storm that ravaged her roof nearly beyond repair. Enter Steve Gotschi with DryHome.com, whose annual program to donate a roof for charity selected Michelle Robinson’s 501(c)3 as this year’s recipient. Shortly before Christmas she wrote Steve saying, “As (we) adjusted to doing virtual visits, I started packing up my house because I thought that I would have to sell and move out of town since I had no way to make

to consider three things: your child’s academic and college goals, strengths and weaknesses, and health, both mental and physical. Goals: The more selective the college, the more they expect students to take the most rigorous courses available. Considering any college that admits less than 30% of applicants? Then academic rigor is important across disciplines. Strengths and weaknesses: If your child is a reader and thrives in English classes, then by all means take AP Literature even if he or she is headed into engineering. If your child always struggles with math and gets C's then it probably makes little sense to take the most difficult path. Mental and physical health: We have a generation of stressed out and anxious kids. How much rigor can my child take while still getting enough sleep? It’s so important as parents to help our kids strike a healthy balance as they plan their courses for next year. Need additional advice on college? PASSIONATE ABOUT PAINTING
J Douglas' Zoom Studio
J DOUGLAS After relinquishing a 17-year career as master of a struggling martial arts studio, J Douglas was broke and on the verge of a career in local law enforcement when serendipity struck. The opportunity didn’t immediately present as a Royal Flush – he’d just taken a job as a waiter at Salamander Resort & Spa in Middleburg as a stop-gap before applying to the Police Academy. He’d been painting professionally for years by then and had prints he shared with the manager of the resort’s gift shop. It didn’t take long for them to find their way into the hands of resort CEO Sheila Johnson. J relates, “Ms. Johnson was coming down the hall toward me waving my prints saying, “J, you’re an artist!” His reply, “I told you I was.” She said, “No, no, NO! People say they’re artists. You ARE an Artist!” Sheila not only asked him to sell his prints, note cards and children’s coloring books based on his work in Salamander’s gift shop, but requested that he stage a three-month solo art show at the resort. Six years later, his work still hangs in the Equestrian Center, along with a commissioned 5-ft. by 7-ft. painting of Paul Estermann, a Swedish Olympic athlete riding Lord Pepsi. J dedicated the work to Sheila in honor of the hurdles she’d help him leap to share his art with the public. Through quarantine, he’s held regular painting classes on behalf of Artists in Middleburg, splitting donations with the non-profit (profiled on p. 46), and he recently joined AIM’s board. He has plans Finished Work

Love in Six Lines: "Kiss"
Ravi with "Half My Heart Away"
RAVI RAMAN Growing up in New Jersey, the pull of the New York art and music scene was strong for Ravi Raman, so his works have always leaned “urban and New York-centric.” He calls himself a modern pop artist, not in the style of Warhol, but just because so much of

Author F. Scott Fitzgerald is a touch-stone, and his descriptions wanted to exist only as a conscious flower,” and, “A sense of responsibility would spoil her. She’s too pretty.” Because the first quote was intended as a put-down, Ravi was bemused to see so many teenage girls at Art Expo in New York where he showed the work in 2018 use it as a selfie backdrop. “Because they were relating to it, I didn’t have the heart to tell them.” That he is attuned to his audience is apparent in another work, “Half My Heart Away.” The left panel was a solo work until several people who saw it remarked that it looked like half a heart. He created another half as a cold contrast to the fiery passion of the first, and together they’re complete. Street art is a strong influence, so it’s fitting that his latest works have ended up decorating a plywood construction wall near the Dupont Circle Metro on 20th St. NW in the District. Inspired by Picasso’s minimalist work on glass, the 9-part series is called “Love in Six Lines.” The theme is as simple as the composition, says Ravi:

GEORGE PEREZ Roger Perez in Studio
Jungle Girl
Cuban-born artist George Perez loves to paint water so it’s not surprising that he owns a place at Lake Anna. In June of 2016, a wave rider exploded when he tried to start it, propelling him like a human cannonball down an alley to land in four feet of water. By a series of seeming miracles, he survived, but with a brain injury and broken back. His journey of recovery – a month in ICU, in the hospital another six weeks wearing a hard, plastic shell like a turtle, cognitive therapy and more than a year convalescing at home – has made him grateful that he can walk and hold a paintbrush. It wasn’t until he began “Jungle Girl,” a portrait of a woman
LIFE AND PAINTING IN VIVID COLOR
who’d been covered with paint and mud as part of the Day of the Dead celebration in Puerto Villarta – “just trying to put paint on canvas,” that, “all of a sudden it came together.” It was as if painting again had unlocked his battered brain and given him back his ability to express himself, both in paint and in language, though some words still escape him. Ironically, he still derives most of his pleasure from painting hyper-realistic water scenes and vibrant portraits, and says he suffers no PTSD from his trauma. “My glass is always half full,” he says now; “I can’t stand negative people.” See his work at https://rogerperezart.com/, The Yellow Barn Studio Juried Show and other local art shows. Leesburg Lifestyle | February 2021
Unfortunately, even after scouring his dental school notes, talking to dentists and countless adjustments to his mouth pieces, the longest relief he achieved was three and a half months. He then literally stumbled upon neuromuscular dentistry when a dentist friend called him up to boast about a new machine he was using to treat his patients’ jaw pain. “I ended up almost forcing him to try it on me and found that, here is something where you can actually collect data. And, you can use these data to diagnose exactly what your jaw needs!” So impressed was he by the certainty availed him by the 3-D IMAGINE THAT YOUR MIGRAINES ARE SO FREQUENT AND SO

patient’s problem was strictly jaw related, the solution was obvious. The solution wouldn’t have been clear to a young Dr. Josef, fresh out of dental school. For his own migraines, he blamed staying at or near the top of his class, moving from California to Texas, and having his first child – more than the usual number of life-stressers – as culprits. In fact, as he discovered after several failed attempts to craft orthotics for himself to ease his pain – his problem was actually rooted in his

decision to get braces! “During dental school, I decided that in order to become a dentist I needed to have perfect teeth so I had braces done. I had never had braces in my life; my teeth were slightly crowded so it wasn’t too bad.” But after a year and a half, his jaw never felt right. Possibly, it wasn’t entirely the braces’ fault – there could have been an underlying problem that they exacerbated – but what he experienced was difficulty chewing meat, jaw tiredness, neck pain, shoulder pain, and yes, skull

That his symptoms decreased markedly even for a while was the tip-off that his headaches could be jaw related. “So, I started treating myself for TMJ issues or TMD (Temporo Mandibular Disfunction) in technical terms.

We should add that, first, Dr. Josef doesn’t consider himself an expert in every aspect of neuromuscular dentistry, but he has followed his own symptoms and those of family members with sleep issues, to discover cures for both TMD and sleep apnea. Dr. Josef believes that everyone’s mouth is different, so the quest for solutions to every patient’s problems

can only be found in continual study and research. He and his partner Dr. Marcus Hoang, DDS, spend 200-300 hours annually – each – in continuing educational studies to improve their knowledge of how to treat their patients’ dental issues with the most advanced techniques in their profession. Virginia requires just 15 hours of continuing education. For Dr. Josef, the extra study “keeps dentistry really exciting. There is so much to learn.”
In Dr. Josef’s office, patients can view their results on a wall-

straining to bite, chew, swallow or talk – finding a way to keep them happy is then relatively easy. So, why isn’t neuromuscular dentistry taught in dental school? Dr. Josef explains that most dental schools focus on how your teeth come together, and how to make adjustments for them to meet properly. “But it isn’t your jaw, your teeth, your bones or whatever that is typically causing your pain – it’s your muscles. Traditional dentistry doesn’t take your muscles into account,” Dr. Josef says. “We not only focus on your muscles, we can remedy many of the ways that they may be causing you pain.” Put simply, Dr. Josef’s quest for a solution to his own pain is now effectively healing his patients. Since he applied his own training to making the right orthotic to treat his symptoms, he hasn’t had a single migraine, for more than five years.

Never the Same Thing Twice HOW WILL WINNING THE GOVERNOR'S CUP IN 2020 CHANGE 868 ESTATE WINERY?
AT THE END OF FEBRUARY, IF TRADITION HOLDS DURING THE CURRENT PANDEMIC, JUDGES WILL PICK VIRGINIA’S TWELVE BEST WINES AND ONE OF THESE WILL WIN THE PRESTIGIOUS GOVERNOR’S CUP®. To get a feel for the level of difficulty in winning the cup, more than 530 wines entered last year’s competition for the top honor in 2020 – and each one was considered among the best the Commonwealth’s vintners had to offer. While the honor typically falls to one of the Commonwealth’s red wines, last February’s Cup went to 868 Estate Vineyards for its 2017 Vidal Blanc Passito – the first top win in the vineyard’s 8-year history, the first top honor to go to a wine made from fruit grown entirely in Loudoun County, AND the first dessert wine to win in 15 years! It is the sort of happy surprise you should come to expect from 868’s three unconventional families who have combined highly successful careers outside of agriculture with a love of great wine, great food and great art. Co-founder and Winemaker Carl DiManno was a former chemical engineer who discovered a love of wine, left the petroleum industry and then went to U.C. Davis to get a degree in Vineology. Nancy Deliso, a member of one of the three family owners, says Carl loves to experiment and typically won’t make the same thing every year so he can expand his knowledge of the art of winemaking. He likely will continue to refine the passito method because of its success, though this year’s crop was a challenge.
