Celebrating The Women In Our Lives

I don’t know about you but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life more rich and beautiful. My three daughters are the most important women in my life, shaping me in ways I never imagined. They have taught me to live with purpose, to find joy in life’s simplest moments, and to embrace confidence in making independent decisions about what truly matters. Through them, I’ve learned to prioritize experiences over material things, cherishing the memories we create together. Their wisdom, love, and spirit continue to inspire me every day. Our wives, mothers and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives.

And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.

Though my mother-in-law passed away years ago, her influence remains the strongest guiding force in my daily life. She taught me the importance of being present for my daughters and grandchildren, always making family her priority. Throughout our child-raising years, she never once turned us down when we needed her, a selflessness I deeply admire. Inspired by her unwavering love, I have made it my goal to realign everything I do around that same commitment to family.

While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role - connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to Lee’s Summit women.

They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

Where Style Meets

Sustainability

For 15 years, Clothes Mentor has been a staple in the Lee’s Summit community, offering high-end fashion at a fraction of retail prices. But under the fresh leadership of a passionate, marketing-savvy owner, the beloved resale boutique fuses fashion-forward thinking with a fierce commitment to sustainability.

A seasoned marketer with a background in e-commerce, owner Rachel Dicke, saw more than just a successful resale store. She saw an opportunity to elevate the experience for women who crave quality, style, and a sense of purpose in shopping. “I wanted to create a shopping destination where women could discover the latest styles from the best brands, all while making a positive impact through sustainable fashion choices,” she says.

At the heart of Clothes Mentor’s mission is a dedication to reducing textile waste through resale. “Our entire business model is rooted in sustainability,” she explains. “By giving pre-loved clothing a second life, we’re extending the fashion lifecycle and reducing demand for new production.”

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American throws away about 81 pounds of clothing annually. According to CALPIRG, there’s already enough clothing on Earth to clothe the next six generations. “That’s insane,” she says. “Especially because most of it is still wearable. Every item we resell is one less garment contributing to that growing environmental issue.”

Clothes Mentor isn’t just about selling used clothes, it’s about making secondhand shopping feel luxurious and empowering.

Shoppers stepping into the Lee’s Summit store are greeted by a clean, beautifully merchandised space with boutique energy and a highly curated inventory of trendy, seasonal styles.

“Our prices are about 70% less than traditional retail, but our quality and customer service are unmatched,” she says.

Women can sell gently used items directly to the store and choose cash or store credit, many choosing the latter to restock their wardrobe with “new to them” fashion. This cyclical model is more than just smart; it’s sustainable.

“MORE SHOPPERS ARE BECOMING CONSCIOUS CONSUMERS,” SAYS RACHEL. “THEY WANT TO REDUCE WASTE AND INVEST IN QUALITY OVER QUANTITY. THE STIGMA AROUND SECONDHAND SHOPPING IS FADING— IT’S NOW SEEN AS SAVVY AND STYLISH.”

In a world where fast fashion dominates, Clothes Mentor is helping change the narrative. “More shoppers are becoming conscious consumers,” she says. “They want to reduce waste and invest in quality over quantity. The stigma around secondhand shopping is fading—it’s now seen as savvy and stylish.”

And the community is taking notice. Word of mouth has been a powerful tool, with new customers walking in daily after hearing rave reviews from friends or seeing social media posts. “People walk in and say, ‘Wow, this store is so clean and organized!’ and ‘These prices are phenomenal!’ That’s our favorite part—surprising people with the quality of our inventory.”

Beyond the storefront, the team partners with local influencers, women’s groups, and sustainability organizations to raise awareness. Overflow product is donated to women’s nonprofits like Hope House and Mother’s Refuge, extending their mission beyond fashion.

Looking to the future, Clothes Mentor has big plans. The store’s 15th anniversary in May will bring month-long celebrations, promotions, and events that highlight its impact on the community. This summer, they’re launching a personal shopper program, pairing customers with local stylists who’ll curate selections based on personal style profiles, further enhancing the boutique feel of the resale experience.

The store has also embraced the digital age with a robust e-commerce platform (leessummitmo. clothesmentor.com), allowing women nationwide to shop their curated selection. Shoppers can choose local pickup and try items in-store before purchasing, bridging the gap between online convenience and in-person confidence.

Authenticity and quality are never compromised. Each item is hand-inspected for brand, condition, and style, and luxury items are authenticated with precision. With styles for women aged 25 to 95, the inventory reflects a wide range of sizes and aesthetics, designed to flatter every body at every stage of life.

The store’s owner is especially proud of how her marketing background shapes the store’s vision. “We’re building something special here. It’s not just about clothes—it’s about confidence, community, and conscious choices. I truly believe resale is the future, even if the product comes from the past.”

Her passion and precision are driving results. With strategic goals and a clear long-term vision, Clothes Mentor is poised to be more than just a local shop— it’s a movement.

And if she could leave Lee’s Summit women with one message?

“Fashion should be both beautiful and responsible. By choosing resale, you’re making a powerful impact on your wardrobe, your wallet, and the planet. Small changes in the way we shop can lead to a more sustainable future for everyone.”

In Lee’s Summit, that future is already taking shape, one stylish, secondhand piece at a time.

From Stem To Vase:

TRANSFORMING FLORALS INTO ART

Flowers have a rich history of symbolic meanings.

As far back as the 19th century, they were used to convey secret messages. Stories throughout history recount how flowers were used to send hidden messages between people. French publishers began producing flower dictionaries that cataloged the many floral codes that had been gathered over time. Some of these meanings were linked to the flower’s root name, often derived from mythology, while others were drawn from the flowers themselves. The colors, medicinal properties, and even the superstitions

associated with these flowers all contributed to the creation of this secret language.

In addition to their symbolic significance, flowers bring natural beauty to any interior, enhancing spaces with their color, texture, and mood-boosting qualities. Floral arrangements not only create a cozy atmosphere but also infuse a room with personality, elevating the overall ambiance. There are multiple ways to creatively integrate florals into your home, and whether using fresh or artificial flowers, creative displays can make quite the statement piece.

Florals and Fruit

“Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.”

Add an extra burst of color and texture to your floral arrangement by layering fruit around the edges of your vase. To achieve this, place a smaller vase inside a larger one, ensuring the flowers stay contained in the inner vase to preserve their shape. Fill the surrounding space with water and then arrange sliced fruit along the vase’s outer sides. For a fresh touch, add ice cubes to keep the fruit looking vibrant longer and to hold them in place. Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.

Flower Frogs

Using a frog to display flowers creates a minimalist yet elegant look that highlights the individuality of each bloom. It helps the stems stay in place. To set it up, place the frog on your chosen display base, whether it’s a vase, bowl, platter, or any container you prefer. Then, simply insert the flower stems by gently pressing them into the prongs. Tip: Flowers with sturdy stems and a lighter top work best in a frog, as delicate blooms tend to lose their shape more quickly.

“Tip: Flowers with sturdy stems and a lighter top work best in a frog, as delicate blooms tend to lose their shape more quickly.”

Hanging Florals

For a dramatic effect, try creating a hanging floral display. Floral cones are available for this style, or you can craft your own for a more personalized, organic look. The contrast between long-stemmed white flowers and a dark wall creates a striking visual impact.

No matter how you choose to display them, flowers are a wonderful addition to any room. They boost mood, improve air quality, spark creativity, and bring a decorative charm to any space.

THE MORTGAGE Queen

ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Jill Underwood’s journey in the mortgage industry began long before she ever imagined owning her own company.

“I started in the early 1980’s when I was very young. My mother was a realtor, and as a teenager, she taught me about equity, negotiations, and helping people with their home purchases. I quickly fell in love with the mortgage industry, and I have been on the front lines helping people ever since.”

Decades of experience led Jill to a pivotal moment in her career—one that pushed her to take control of her future.

“Starting my own business was a long time coming! Frankly, I was in a place in my career where I needed a change. I was frustrated. So, I gained great clarity on exactly what I want the remaining years of my career to look like, and then I marched forward and created my vision.”

Jill founded her brokerage business to deliver an unparalleled, personalized mortgage experience tailored to each client’s unique needs.

“The decision to become a mortgage broker was easy. The broker side of my industry allows me to be aligned with dozens of lenders so I have more products to offer, so I can help more people. The mortgage broker world helps consumers save thousands of dollars in fees and creates the opportunity to seek the best loan product to meet each individual consumer’s needs.”

Her brand identity wasn’t something she sought out—it found her.

“A handful of years ago, a friend told me I should call myself the Mortgage Queen. At first, I thought it was cheesy, but the name stuck with me. Some days I loved it; other days, not so much. It kept coming back to me, and eventually, I decided to embrace it. My business mentor gave me my first assignment: name my company. Since I had already built the Mortgage Queen identity, continuing with it was the natural next step, and that’s how Your Mortgage Queen LLC came to life.”

“My job is to educate my clients, walk them through the process, and show them their options. The prize and the best days are when I see my clients’ joy at their closing celebration!”

Jill’s four decades in the mortgage industry give her an undeniable edge that allows her to see the bigger picture.

“I have seen so many changes in my industry. I’ve seen the good times and the bad times. I can recall when and why certain guidelines were created, and I share those stories with my clients and realtors.”

Expertise alone isn’t enough—she also brings deep empathy to every transaction.

“I remember buying my first home. I was scared and completely lost—it was emotional! First-time homebuyers feel that same anxiety, and I’ll never forget that.”

She also understands that homeownership isn’t just about buying a house, but also about navigating life’s transitions.

“I’m not afraid to take on a challenging loan. I know how to help self-employed clients because I can read tax returns and calculate income the way an underwriter would.”

Beyond the numbers, she connects with her clients on a personal level.

“I’ve been divorced and I know what it feels like to be a single woman raising a teenager with no help. I know what it feels like to sell the marital home of 19 years and figure out how to start all over again. I know what it’s like to get older and downsize and move into a smaller home. With all the years of my experience, I have been in darn near every category

of homeowner, every life cycle, so I can relate to the emotions and issues my clients face. That’s what I love about how I help people. It’s important to understand what they are going through and to give them comfort and hope.”

That’s why Jill does what she does—to make the process easier, to offer hope, and to celebrate each client’s success.

“My job is to educate my clients, walk them through the process, and show them their options. The prize and the best days are when I see my clients’ joy at their closing celebration!”

If Jill could give one piece of advice, it would be this: "Google doesn’t know everything, and social media is not the place to get advice.  Great advice comes from an experienced loan officer who has your best interest in mind. Ask your close friends and family for a referral to a mortgage expert. Ask your financial advisor or CPA for a referral to a great loan officer. Social media is like the old yellow pages—when you get a referral to someone, use the internet to determine if you think you will like that person. Talk to them, or better yet, go meet them in person.”

With unmatched industry knowledge, a passion for helping people, and a deep understanding of the emotions tied to homeownership, Jill Underwood truly lives up to her name. Your Mortgage Queen is located at 410 SE 3rd Street in Lees Summit. For more information, visit yourmortgagequeen.net

Inspiration Beyond the Closets

For Jen Macias-Wetzel, owner of Inspired Closets KC, providing organized, functional  spaces for her clients is just one part of her mission. She is equally dedicated to creating an  environment where she and her employees can grow, learn and thrive.

Jen’s commitment to personal development stems from her own journey.

Growing up in a blue-collar family, the norm was to enter the workforce immediately after  high school. “College wasn't something that was in the cards for me at the time,” Jen  explains. “The expectation was to get a job, start earning a living.” And that's exactly what  she did. She built a successful career in marketing and business development, primarily in  the architectural and multi-family development sectors, all while raising three sons.

But education stayed implanted in the back of her mind. “It has always been a source of  angst, wishful thinking,” she says. After years of balancing work and family life, she decided  to go back to school. This May, after nearly 29 years, that long-held dream will become a  reality when she graduates with a degree in business administration and marketing.

Jen’s experience has inspired a deep commitment to making higher education accessible  for future generations of her family. “I want my future grandchildren to have the  opportunities I didn’t have. I want to make sure they have the resources to pursue their  dreams,” Jen says.

Living by the motto, “To walk a mile, you have to take a first step,” Jen has already set her  next personal challenge. “I’m half Mexican, but I don’t speak Spanish. I want to learn to be  fluent and honor that heritage.”

Jen’s passion for growth is deeply imbedded in the culture she is building at Inspired  Closets KC. “Seeing my team succeed is one of the most rewarding parts of my job,” she  says. “From our office manager to our designers to our installation team, they are always  learning, always improving. I love when they come to me with new ideas. It means we’ve  created an environment where they feel comfortable sharing and innovating.”

One of the team’s newest members is designer Alexis Cross, who serves the Lee’s Summit  area for Inspired Closets KC. Under Jen’s mentorship, Alexis has joined the Lee’s Summit  Chamber of Commerce and is learning the importance of networking and professional  development. “She’s incredibly driven,” Jen shares.

“Her energy, tenacity and creativity are  inspiring, and she brings such a positive presence to our team.”

Alexis says that Jen has laid the foundation for her to be successful. “It all starts with  dedicated client interfacing and being part of a team. Jen is a strong leader who will  support us every step of the way. She encourages us to build the business independently,  all while providing the resources for growth.”

“Working for Jen and Inspired Closets KC is everything I have ever wanted and more. It has  opened my eyes to the idea of unlimited possibilities,” Alexis proudly states.

The entire team has taken to prioritizing community involvement, under Jen’s tutelage. In  April, the women of Inspired Closets KC joined

forces with Habitat for Humanity to help  build a house. Jen sees it as “an important opportunity—it’s good for business, it’s good for  your personal self and it’s good for the employees’ morale.” Alexis understands that each  new experience is helping her build her confidence and cultivating a deeper commitment  to community outreach. She says, “I am just starting to dip my toes in the water, but I am  learning how impactful it can be talking to people and being involved.”

Jen is focused on fostering a workplace where employees feel valued and empowered. She  says, “I want to be the kind of boss I always wish I had. A leader who supports and  encourages their team, who provides opportunities for learning and development. Growth  is magical, and I want to share that magic with my team.”

Jen Macias-Wetzel is building more than a business—she is establishing a culture of  growth, mentorship, and community engagement. Her journey serves as an inspiration,  proving that it’s never too late to pursue a dream or take the first step toward something  new. Through Inspired Closets KC, she is not only creating organized spaces but also  opportunities for those around her to grow, thrive, and give back.

At the heart of this spectacular spread, a bouquet of floral offerings takes center stage featuring assorted chocolate florets, delicate white rose wafers, and salami and cheese blossoms. Perfectly crafted and delicious, they establish the visual and gastronomic theme for the entire display. Accompanying the spread are glasses adorned with edible floral rims, beckoning you to sip and savor the essence of spring; dried lavender, marigold, rose, lemon peel and lily garnishes provide vibrancy and are entirely edible. Elevate the visual appeal with rosefolded napkins and a sprinkle of seasonal flowers atop layers of fresh greenery.

Complement your floral artistry with a curated variety of cheeses, prosciutto, colorful olives, fresh blueberries and strawberries, and candied oranges. Fragrant rosemary bread is perfectly paired with choice preserves, honey and olive oil.

Beyond the Headlines: Understanding Measles and How to Keep Your Child Safe

If you read our recent measles alert, you know that cases are on the rise again, particularly in the Midwest. For many parents, that news sparks worry and questions: Why is this happening? Is my child at risk? What can I do to keep my family safe?

At Community Choice Pediatrics, we believe informed parents are empowered parents. In this companion article, we go beyond the headlines to give you a deeper understanding of measles, why it’s making a comeback, and how we work with you to prevent its spread.

Why Are Measles Cases Coming Back?

Although measles was officially declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, we’ve seen a recent increase in outbreaks. Why? A few key factors are at play:

• Lower vaccination rates in certain communities have made it easier for the virus to spread

• International travel increases exposure to measles in regions where the virus is still common

• Misinformation about vaccines has caused some families to delay or skip immunizations

Measles is one of the most contagious viruses in the world—up to 90% of unvaccinated people who are exposed will become infected. It only takes one case to spark a community outbreak, which is why prevention matters now more than ever.

Who’s Most at Risk?

While measles can affect anyone who isn’t protected, some people face greater risk for complications, including:

• Infants under 12 months, who are too young for the MMR vaccine

• Pregnant women, who face a higher risk of miscarriage or premature birth if infected

• People with weakened immune systems, such as those undergoing cancer treatment

Even if your child is vaccinated, staying informed and proactive helps protect others in our community who cannot be.

What To Do

If You Think Your Child Has Been Exposed

If you hear of a local case or suspect your child has been exposed, here’s what to do:

1. Call our office before coming in – We can help assess the situation and take precautions to keep other patients safe.

2. Monitor symptoms carefully – Early signs include fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes.

3. Watch for a rash – A red, blotchy rash typically appears a few days after initial symptoms, starting on the face and spreading downward.

Don’t panic, just call. Our team is here to walk you through what steps to take and answer any questions along the way.

Why Vaccination Still Matters

The MMR vaccine is safe, effective, and our best defense against measles. The CDC recommends:

• First dose at 12–15 months

• Second dose at 4–6 years

Two doses provide approximately 97% protection. Vaccinating your child also protects those who are most vulnerable, helping to stop outbreaks before they start.

Still have questions? Talk to your provider. We’re happy to review your child’s vaccination records and provide science-backed answers to any concerns you may have.

Our Commitment to You

At Community Choice Pediatrics, we go beyond routine care. We believe in building trust, sharing knowledge, and supporting families through both everyday challenges and unexpected concerns.

Here’s how we help:

• We review immunization records at every well visit

• We provide judgment-free education and support

• We keep up with the latest public health guidance

• We’re here to listen, guide, and empower you

Whether you need a quick answer or a thoughtful conversation, you can count on us to protect your child’s health.

Supporting Your Child’s Health—Every Step of the Way

At Community Choice Pediatrics, we’re here to provide more than just checkups—we offer guidance, reassurance, and trusted care for every stage of your child’s growth. Staying protected against illnesses like measles is a vital part of that journey.

If you’re unsure about your child’s vaccination schedule, have questions about symptoms, or simply want peace of mind, we’re just a call or click away. Our compassionate team is here to support your family with evidence-based advice and personalized care.

Let’s work together to keep your child—and our community—healthy and thriving.

Visit our website to schedule an appointment to speak with your provider today.

Healthier Together, Always.
