To leave a legacy for your family, you need a comprehensive estate plan — and you need to avoid making mistakes.
The biggest mistake may be procrastination. If you put off creating an estate plan, or at least writing a basic, simple will, your estate could be tied up many months in probate court proceedings.
Another common mistake is failing to update a will and the beneficiary designations on your investment accounts and insurance policies. Your family unit could experience many changes, such as death, divorce, remarriage and the addition of new children, so you should periodically review your documents.
As part of your estate plans, you could establish a living trust, which can help your estate avoid probate. But some people make the mistake of not titling their assets in the name of the trust.
One other key mistake is choosing the wrong executor of your will. You want someone who can handle the many financial, legal and tax elements involved.
Finally, don’t go it alone. By working with a qualified legal advisor, and possibly your tax and financial professionals, you can avoid mistakes and create an estate plan that does what you want it to do.

Celebrating the men in our lives, whether they are fathers, husbands, or grandfathers, is a beautiful tradition that acknowledges the profound impact they have on our lives. Fathers, with their unwavering support and guidance, are the pillars upon which families stand strong. They teach us invaluable lessons, from how to ride a bike to navigating life's challenges with resilience and grace. Husbands bring love, companionship, and partnership to the journey of life, standing beside us through thick and thin, supporting our dreams, and sharing the joys and burdens of everyday existence. Grandfathers, with their wealth of wisdom and stories, bridge the generations, imparting the legacy of their experiences and shaping the values that bind families together.
The value these men provide goes beyond mere provision and protection; it lies in the intangible gifts of love, wisdom, and strength of character. In celebrating them, we honor their sacrifices, their dedication, and their enduring love. This month, I would like to acknowledge my dad who filled my life with unwavering support, love, and laughter including fun memories of playing for endless hours jumping and running across his back any other crazy activity we could come up with. Additionally, I am grateful to have known my daughter's Father In Law, Greg Ruder, who looked forward to proudly reading the Lee’s Summit City Lifestyle page by page that has recently passed away. He showed selfless love and compassion to everyone he met. Cheers to the men who fill our lives with life lessons and traditions to continue for they are the true treasures that make life's journey worthwhile.

At Top Tier Fishing Guide, they stay true to their name by providing top-tier service from the moment you arrive at the dock. Whether you're an experienced fisher or a novice looking to reel in your first catch, they’ve got you covered. Owner Daryl Randolph, Sr. is the passionate angler taking guests on an adventure that promises relaxation, excitement and unforgettable memories.
“My love for fishing started with my 93-year-old great uncle, Theodore Scott, who taught me everything I know about the outdoors,” says Daryl. “As I sharpened my fishing skills, more and more people wanted to go fishing with me. That's when I decided to turn this into a business. My uncle taught me to do everything with a spirit of excellence. From the moment you arrive you’ll receive top tier service, which includes a warm welcome, safety guidelines, a few basic techniques, a relaxing boat ride, great company and a wonderful fishing experience. All fishing gear, rods, reels, bait and tackle are provided. All fish caught are cleaned, filleted and sent home with each customer on ice.”
With a childhood spent fishing the waters of Missouri and Kansas, he’s honed his skills to become an accomplished angler. This passion for fishing has taken him to various countries, where he’s had the opportunity to fish different species.
“As a person that's traveled to Costa Rica, the Bayous of Louisiana, and to Lake El Salto in Mexico, I've learned that there are so many varieties of fish and fishing. The first thing a fisherman must know is what species they are after. You must also know the primary food that particular fish eats. Always look for birds when determining good feeding grounds. Remember, a positive attitude is the best bait for any kind of fish.”

As he looks to the future, the goal to expand his reach and impact remains at the forefront. Daryl aspires to take youth groups and seniors on fishing expeditions, providing them with enriching experiences in the great outdoors. Additionally, he aims to sponsor trips for deserving individuals, offering them the opportunity to explore fishing destinations beyond their wildest dreams.

Summit Guitar School
A Lee Summit guitarist is shaping the next generation of guitarists and bass players while cultivating a thriving community of musicians-in-training. Meet Brett Blakemore, the proud owner of Summit Guitar School who is gaining notoriety for helping aspiring musicians get unstuck for good.
“You may not get to the advanced level, but I can guarantee you with a little bit of effort, I can teach anyone to play something,” explained Blakemore.
The guitar pro’s passion started after finding his mother’s old guitar at the age of twelve. After learning how to play his first grunge rock song, thanks to a neighborhood friend, it was love at first strum. HIs lifelong passion led him to open Summit Guitar School; a school designed to help guitar players fine-tune their skills. Blakemore leads a variety of courses at all levels, bringing more than 20 years of experience working as a performer and instructor.
ARTICLE BY D. LEON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONESHe is known in the music community for designing courses that ensure musical growth. He says many musicians get stuck in a rut after reaching an intermediate level in guitar playing, and his school helps fill that need.If you're willing to be patient, Blakemore’s school has a structured pathway to help you reach your musical potential.
“I’m trying to help intermediates break through to the next level. There’s a plateau that guitar players get to once they hit this gray area, and it’s where they just feel stuck,” said Blakemore. "I know how it feels to get stuck at that level, and you just need someone to open your eyes to something new and to different possibilities on the guitar.”
Blakemore currently offers solo and group lessons both in-person and online. HIs students come from all over the world and have taken advantage of his expertise, no matter their age or playing level. Blakemore estimates he has taught at least 20,000 music lessons throughout his career and notes his online group lessons have drawn students from Dubai, Ireland and all throughout the U.S; evolving into a supportive community for all musicians.
“I would say I have hundreds of people that are part of my online community, and I go live with them, have online courses and can answer questions on a topic I am teaching,” said Blakemore. “I like the community aspect and think other people enjoy it, too. They participate because they also get to know people in other states and other countries online.”
As demand for his school continues to grow, the classroom isn’t the only place where you can find Blakemore jamming out. Over the next few months, people from all throughout Kansas City can listen to him play a wide-range of genres from Reggae, Classic Rock and even Blues as a solo performer and member of some of KC’s best bands. His reputation has also garnered a strong social media presence, where he is able to spread his love for rocking out.
“I have an absolute love and passion for guitar and teaching guitar,” said Blakemore, “I’m constantly encouraging students to find jam sessions in their towns and communities and find people to play with."

Because wood flooring requires fewer chemicals to make and install, it helps promote healthier living and work environments.
The EPA found that hardwood floors improve air quality because they are less likely to harbor dangerous microorganisms, pesticides, and allergens, such as dust, mold, or pet dander.
Vinyl flooring will last only a decade or two, while quality wood flooring can last more than 100 years.
Wood floors will stand up to foot traffic and will maintain their color finish with proper maintenance. Vinyl flooring, however, will last only a decade or two and fade dramatically over time when exposed to sunlight.
Wood floors are easy to maintain and can be repaired with relative ease. But vinyl typically needs to be replaced completely if it’s damaged.
Wood is a zero waste product. For example, old wood from flooring can be turned into other products or simply bio-degrade.
Other flooring types, such as vinyl, are made from plastics or synthetic fibers that take multiple decades to break down and decompose. Recycling companies typically reject old vinyl flooring because it’s not profitable for them. And, the alternative form of disposal - burning - releases harmful phthalate chemicals into the air.
Many homeowners love the look of hardwood flooring and other features in their home. But they are also concerned about the initial expense of installing wood.
Putting wood floors into your home is truly a good investment. Real hardwood floors add to the resale value of your home. The average return on investment is 70 to 80%!
TRANSFORMING ONE SMILE AT A TIME
Jewell Orthodontics is the new orthodontic practice in Lee’s Summit dedicated to transforming smiles and lives. Dr. Abby Jewell has brought her passion for orthodontics back to her hometown, creating a practice that embodies excellence, innovation and community spirit.
ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY WEST ELM PHOTOGRAPHY
Born and raised in Lee's Summit, Dr. Jewell embarked on a remarkable journey that took her from the halls of Lee's Summit West High School to the prestigious University of Alabama for her undergraduate. Upon returning to Kansas City, she pursued her dream of becoming an orthodontist, completing a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree before earning a coveted spot in the orthodontic residency program at The Mayo Clinic in Rochester. It was there that Dr. Jewell honed her skills in craniofacial orthodontics, setting the stage for her future endeavors.
Driven by her love for Lee's Summit and a desire to give back to the community that shaped her, Dr. Jewell made the decision to establish her practice in her hometown.
“I have always loved Lee's Summit,” says Dr. Jewell. “I am big on community spirit. I was on the dance team in high school, and my favorite thing was how energetic the school was at all of the sporting events. I think that Lee's Summit has flourished over the last decade in community events and engagement. Most of my family lives here, so for me it was a no-brainer that I wanted to establish a practice near family, in my hometown where I had the chance to be very active in the community as well.”
“I LOOK FORWARD TO CONTINUING SPONSORSHIPS AND INVOLVEMENT IN SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY EVENTS AND GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY THAT HELPED ME ACHIEVE MY DREAMS.”
Step into Dr. Jewell's new office, and you'll immediately feel at ease.
"When I was designing the space, I wanted it to be bright and airy but comfortable for all ages. It is important to me that my patients feel at ease and welcome during their visits. The large windows throughout the entire office allow the natural sunlight to brighten the space and add warmth. My color scheme incorporates a lot of the green family—think sages, eucalyptus and emeralds, which adds some comfort colors to the office.”
New patients can expect a thorough evaluation.
“As a first time patient, we take a full set of records—photos, panoramic and
cephalometric radiographs and a 3D scan for a model of their teeth, if needed. I then do a full clinical evaluation followed by a thorough explanation of the findings from the exam. I review what treatment is recommended, if any, and then Elyce takes over and reviews next steps with the patients to help them get started.”
When it comes to treatment, the debate between metal braces and clear aligners often arises. Dr. Jewell, however, emphasizes that the choice ultimately depends on the patient's needs and preferences. While metal braces have been a staple, clear aligners have made significant strides in recent years—clear aligners can
achieve results comparable to braces and are sometimes even preferred by patients.
One unique offering is WildSmiles Braces, also known as designer braces-these are fun and playful, allowing patients to express their personality during treatment. From whimsical shapes in the Signature Collection to beloved Disney characters and collegiate logos, they offer a creative twist on traditional orthodontics.
Beyond the practice, Dr. Jewell extends her expertise to the cleft and craniofacial team at Overland Park Regional Medical Center, where she treats patients with cleft from infancy all the way to adulthood. Her dedication to serving individuals with these conditions underscores her commitment to making a positive impact.
Jewell Orthodontics continues to innovate and elevate orthodontic care and are committed to providing modernized treatment options. From 3D scanning for models and appliances to in-house 3D printing of retainers, they embrace cutting-edge technology. Looking ahead, Dr. Jewell envisions growing the practice while maintaining a strong focus on community involvement.
“My main goal is to focus on this one location and give it my full attention. I plan to grow my staff as the office grows and incorporate more members of the community. I look forward to continuing sponsorships and involvement in schools and community events and giving back to the community that helped me achieve my dreams.”
Jewell Orthodontics is located at 2070 NW Lowenstein Drive in Lee’s Summit. For more information, visit jewellorthodontics.com
TURBOCHARGE YOUR LOVE FOR PORSCHE WITH KC’S LOCAL COMMUNITY: “WE ARE MUCH MORE THAN A CAR CLUB, WE ARE AN EXPERIENCE.”
The Kansas City Region Porsche Club of America (KCRPCA) has existed for over sixty years, giving Porsche owners a place to bond over the mutual love for one of the most iconic cars ever created. We took the time to chat with local chapter member and former Board Member, Jeffrey Tudas, about what the club entails and to give a glimpse into how fun and tight-knit this crew is.
CL: WHAT IS IT ABOUT PORSCHE THAT PEOPLE FALL IN LOVE WITH?
JT: The Porsche 911 model is so iconic and recognizable, and while there are other models, this is the one that resonates the most for me. There are many other incredible models based on the owners needs and preferences. There are the older model air-cooled, the 914’s, Boxster, Macan, Taycan just to call out a few. The other thing is in addition to having an authentic racing heritage, they are also true street cars that you can drive comfortably and enjoyably. 70% of Porsches made are still on the road today which tells you that the DNA of the Porsche brand is exemplary.
CL: WHEN AND WHERE DOES THE CLUB MEET?
JT: We have a very active club that hosts a wide range of events allowing our members to pick what’s of most interest to them. We meet weekly on Saturdays for 7 am breakfast at Pegah’s in Lenexa, where at least 50 or more members routinely gather and chat about everything from the shiny new penny of a model that someone bought, which exhaust will provide that perfect symphonic note or angry growl, to the latest family news. Saturday morning breakfast is a 50-year tradition for the club. Additionally, the chapter hosts many ongoing events, such as New Member gatherings, Driving Tours, Drivers Education, PCA Club Racing, Autocross,
ARTICLE BY MINDY HARGESHEIMER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONESIce Cream Socials, Tech Sessions, and the annual Oktoberfest and Holiday parties. There are many activities to engage our diverse membership population, we usually have at least one if not two events every week-end.
CL: WHO ARE THE MEMBERS OF THE LOCAL CHAPTER AND HOW DOES ONE BECOME ONE?
JD: We have a very active club filled with Porsche owners across many demographics -men, women and people of all ages. When you buy a Porsche, you are encouraged to join the PCA and in doing so, our local chapter is notified of the buyer and the model they purchased. From there, the Membership Director reaches out to connect and invites them in to join for breakfast or an upcoming event. Members receive routine email communications listing the monthly activities along with registration links. We have a region newsletter that provides interesting stories and information to keep you informed and up to date on club activities. The best part is that there is something for everyone in the club: Some simply love going to breakfast while others go specifically to test their driving skills while weaving their way through Auto Cross. Driver’s Education offers the opportunity to drive with an experienced instructor around a race track, and even junior fans are strongly encouraged to join as members and exercise their early love for the automobile. We often hear from members that the love of the brand may have brought us together, but it’s the people that keeps us engaged.
I joined this club because I bought a Porsche, but these people have become very good friends over the years.
“If I have a need, whether Porsche or family-related, I know where to go. It’s hard to explain but it’s truly more than the cars.”
Sidenote, Jeff and I chatted about the common bond of being a kid and recognizing then the power of the Porsche. Jeff grew up with a poster on his wall and has always remembered the first time he saw one on the road. For me, it was navigating my remote-controlled black 911 model all around, and as a minor, I lived for that small but mighty, aspirational driving experience.
“It starts with the cars, but it’s really about the people and the overall experience. I joined this club because I bought a Porsche, but these people have become very good friends over the years. If I have a need, whether Porsche or family-related, I know where to go. It’s hard to explain but it’s truly more than the cars.”

Local non-profit steps up in times of need
Ronnie Doumitt, a former detective with the Lee’s Summit Police Department, felt the pull to act when his friend and co-worker, Josh Ward, became extremely ill on Thursday, April 16, 2015.
“He was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital in Lee’s Summit, complaining of a sore arm and fever. They then rushed him to St. Luke’s on the Plaza, where he began the fight for his life,” he explained. “He was diagnosed with a drastic case of flesh-eating bacteria, Necrotizing Fasciitis. As soon as we heard about it, I ran to the hospital and met with his wife Melissa. I was reassigned from my case load to meet their needs by my chief at that time.”
They knew it would be a long battle if he survived at all. Ronnie watched as Josh’s wife, Melissa, and their three kids started to suffer financially. His department began to fundraise for them. He described seeing how the community supported the Ward family as an amazing experience to be a part of even though it was traumatic and awful.
“He had 27 surgeries in a four-month period. We were planning a funeral when God truly stepped in when modern science said he wouldn’t survive. It was a miracle! He woke from his medically induced coma, and it was like a light switch went on,” he continued. “He was able to focus on his
recovery and walked out of the hospital on his own two feet. The sad part of the whole situation is that Josh lost his profession over his illness. Our amazing Chief Forbes rehired him and he is now working as supervisor in our records unit. I stay in constant contact with them, and they are doing well.”
While he was in the hospital, Ronnie was waiting for resources to reach out to me from the state county and city, and no one stepped in. He decided to change that and contacted his lifelong friend, Brett Reinhard, who is a CPA in Blue Springs, Reinhard and Kovacs CPA to start the 501c3.
Deron Cherry partnered with Answering the Call about 7 years ago and his foundation has been in our community 30 years doing amazing work. They decided they would be one of the four non- profits they would support within our community.
“It has been an amazing partnership, friendship and blessing to our organization,” he noted.
Their bylaws state first responders must have a severe catastrophic injury or an aggressive illness that is non-duty or duty related. In 2023, Kansas City alone on both sides of the state line, had a total of eight officers shot in the line of duty.
“We were involved within 12 hours of all those incidents. My goal is to alleviate the financial strain within hours. Studies have shown if you can alleviate financial strain for officers, it improves their mental health immensely,” he continued. “They do not get paid enough for the jobs they do. If you take a first responder off their job for months at a time, they are almost immediately impacted financially. We bridge that financial gap and provide financial resources and other resources to them and their families.”
Since inception, ATC has donated back over $875,000, and in 2023 they donated $168,000 back to local first responders. They are the only such resource in Missouri and Kansas.
“God is the one who led me down this path for whatever reason nine years ago. I have pushed through and continued to grow this need that is not being met. The community overwhelmingly supports it. I retired early from the department in 2022, and now run this big, marvelous beast full time,” he smiled.

Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.
ARTICLE BY DANIEL SCHOWENGERDT01.
If you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.

Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. As the days grow longer and temperatures soar, it’s essential to pay extra attention to keeping our kids hydrated. Dehydration isn’t just uncomfortable—it can be dangerous, especially for young bodies.
Understanding Dehydration
Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in, preventing it from performing normal functions. This risk is significantly heightened during the hot summer months for kids, who are often less aware of their hydration needs and more focused on playing than drinking water.
Causes of Dehydration in Kids
Summer brings a spike in outdoor activities and higher temperatures, contributing to rapid fluid loss. Additionally, common summer illnesses like stomach bugs can result in significant dehydration due to vomiting or diarrhea. Understanding these risks is key to prevention.
Signs and Symptoms of Dehydration
Keep an eye out for the initial signs of dehydration, such as a dry mouth, thirst, and decreased urine output. If a child loses fluid without adequate replacement, more severe symptoms can develop, including dry skin, dizziness, and fatigue. In critical cases, you may notice sunken eyes, a lack of sweat, and very dark urine, which require immediate medical attention.
Strategies for Prevention
The best defense against dehydration is ensuring regular fluid intake. Kids need
varying amounts of water depending on their age, weight, and the level of physical activity. A good rule of thumb is to encourage drinking water every 20-30 minutes during outdoor activities and to always have water available during meals and throughout the day.
According to waterdrop.com, the recommended daily fluid intake for children is:
• 1-4 years: 28 oz
• 4-7 years: 32 oz
• 7-10 years: 33 oz
• 10-13 years: 40 oz
Suitable
Water is the best option for staying hydrated. Limiting or avoiding sugary drinks like soda or fruit juices can be beneficial, as they can actually increase the risk of dehydration. A balanced electrolyte drink can be helpful for kids engaged in prolonged physical activity, but these should be used sparingly.
Each age group has unique needs when it comes to hydration:
• Infants: They typically get enough fluids from breast milk or formula, but in very hot climates, they might need additional water once they start eating solid foods.
• Young children: Make hydration fun using colorful cups or straws, and set a good example by drinking plenty of

water yourself.
• Older children: Teach them to listen to their bodies, hydrate whenever they feel thirsty, and carry a water bottle to school and sports activities.
As parents, it’s essential to actively monitor your child’s hydration. This can mean offering fluids at regular intervals, especially if your child is too young or too distracted to ask for water themselves. Educating your kids about the importance of drinking water and recognizing the signs of dehydration is also crucial.
If your child shows signs of severe dehydration, such as rapid breathing or pulse, extreme fatigue, or fainting, seek medical help immediately. Dehydration can usually be reversed with increased fluid intake, but severe cases may require medical treatments such as oral rehydration solutions or intravenous fluids. Staying vigilant about hydration is a simple yet effective way to ensure your child enjoys a healthy, active summer. Remember, prevention is critical when it comes to dehydration.
