Peace in the Mountains

As I sit down to write this, my heart is overflowing with gratitude. Scott and I have just returned from our elopement out west—a breathtaking journey over 3,000 miles, driven from Tennessee through the mountains of Colorado, that was truly a dream come true. It was a time to slow down, reflect, marry my best friend and give thanks for the many blessings in our lives. Out there, surrounded by the beauty of God’s creation, I felt a deep sense of peace and an even deeper appreciation for the gifts He’s given us—the love we share, the work we do, and the life we’re building together.

This trip reminded me of the harvest and all that it symbolizes—faith, patience, and abundance. The blessings we reap are the result of the seeds we’ve sown, both personally and professionally, and I’m so grateful for every part of this journey.

To my husband--thank you for believing in me, for encouraging my passions, and for loving me through all the wins and the losses.

To my family and friends—thank you for always cheering me on and for your patience through the many late nights and deadlines.

To my incredible LCL team—you’re the heartbeat of this magazine. Thank you for helping me dream big, chase bold ideas, and bring them all to life (on time, no less!).

And to our community of Lebanon—and beyond—thank you for loving Lebanon City Lifestyle. I’m endlessly proud of the stories we tell, the partnerships we’ve built, and the difference we get to make together. From supporting local businesses to shining light on organizations that serve others, I’m constantly reminded that this work is more than publishing—it’s purpose.

As we enter this season of gratitude, my heart is full. I thank God for every moment, every challenge, every blessing—and for you, our readers, partners and friends, who make this all possible.

With love and gratitude,

November 2025

SONGS OF SERVICE

Where Music Meets Ministry in the Heart of Lebanon

ARTICLE BY LINDSEY HICKMAN
PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAT BRADSHAW PHOTOGRAPHY

For country artists Jake Hoot and Scotty Hasting, music isn’t just a career—it’s a calling rooted in faith, family, and a deep love for community. Though their journeys to the stage were vastly different—Jake winning NBC’s The Voice, and Scotty discovering songwriting after surviving life-threatening injuries in combat—both found purpose and peace in the same place: Lebanon, Tennessee.

Drawn to its slower pace and strong sense of belonging, Jake and Scotty each found more than just a hometown—they found healing, support, and inspiration. Whether it’s walking the Square, raising their kids, playing local venues, or giving back

through missions and military outreach, both artists say Lebanon feels like home in the truest sense of the word.

“It’s growing, but it still feels like a small town,” Jake shares. “We’ve found family here.”

Scotty agrees. “Lebanon’s where I picked up a guitar for the first time—and it’s where I learned how to live again.”

Through their music, both men carry forward messages of hope, gratitude, and resilience—proving that no matter how different the path, home has a way of bringing the most meaningful songs to life.

JAKE HOOT

Faith, Family, and Giving Back Through Music

When Jake Hoot won NBC’s The Voice, his life changed overnight. What began as weekend gigs turned into a full-time career alongside music legends. “It gave me confidence not just as an artist, but in who I am,” Jake shares. “It gave me the courage to pursue dreams that once felt scary.”

Since then, Jake and his wife have put down roots in Lebanon, drawn by its small-town charm and tight-knit community. “We’ve been blessed to find people who’ve truly become family,” he says. Their church community and love for missions work—something that also brought the couple back together—remain central to their lives.

Jake’s songwriting often reflects his faith, family, and the simple beauty of daily life. “A hit songwriter once told me, ‘Write what you know.’ That stuck. Whether it’s a song about fatherhood or faith, I try to write from the heart.”

“Singing ‘Wintersong’ with Kelly Clarkson was unforgettable, but hearing my name called as the winner—with my daughter in the audience—that was the most surreal moment. It reminded me why I do what I do. That night changed everything.”
– Jake Hoot

His favorite collaboration so far? “Recording I Would’ve Loved You with Kelly Clarkson was surreal,” he says. “She’s been a huge supporter.” As for dream collabs? “The Eagles—hands down.”

As a dad of three girls and husband to Brittany, the founder of The Radiant Initiative, service is woven into the Hoot family’s rhythm. “We keep God at the center of it all,” Jake says. “That’s how we balance careers, parenting, and ministry.”

With new music on the horizon—and even a children’s book in the works—Jake’s story is far from over. “I just want to use my platform to give back, stay grounded, and keep writing songs that matter.”

SCOTTY HASTING

Music, Healing, and a Mission to Inspire

After being critically wounded in combat while serving in the U.S. Army, Scotty Hasting survived what many wouldn’t. But in the years that followed, he faced an even harder battle—one with PTSD, depression, and anxiety. In 2020, during the isolation of COVID, he picked up a guitar—and unknowingly, changed his life.

“Music saved me,” he says. “It gave me an outlet when the noise in my head was too loud.”

Songwriting became his therapy, and the stage became his sanctuary. His breakout single “Scars” was born from real conversations about pain, survival, and hope. “I want people to know they’re not defined by what hurt them,” Scotty says. “You’re defined by how you respond.”

After being awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in service, Scotty found renewed purpose through music, specifically through his collaboration song with Lee Brice and Dolly Parton,“’Til the Last Shots Fired”—a song that first moved him to tears during rehab at Walter Reed. “When Dolly’s voice came in... I got chills,” he recalls, “That version changed everything for me.”

“I’m so grateful to still be here—to get to do what I love and hopefully help someone else through their pain. That’s why I keep going. That’s why I write. Every show, every song, is a thank you for another day.”

– Scotty Hasting

But for all his career milestones, Scotty says what he feels most is gratitude—for life, for music, and for the people who’ve stood by him. “I don’t know why I’m still here,” he says, “But I wake up thankful every day—for my family, my kids, my team, and the chance to help someone else find their way.”

Now calling Lebanon home, Scotty continues to write, tour, and pour his heart into every song—reaching others who are still fighting battles of their own. “I’ll always be a soldier,” he says, “but now, my mission is to heal through music—and to remind people they’re not alone.”

HOW HISTORIC LEBANON KEEPS THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN BEATING

A Community to Be Thankful For

Photo by Cedar & Light Photography
“Preservation isn’t just about the past—it protects Lebanon’s character while creating space for growth.”

At the heart of Wilson County, Lebanon’s historic downtown stands as both a memory and a promise. Its brick-lined sidewalks, historic facades, and lively storefronts reflect the city’s past while pointing toward a vibrant future. It’s a place where neighbors meet, visitors linger, and the character of Lebanon shines brightest. Supporting this vision is Historic Lebanon Main Street, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preserving the community’s heritage while helping downtown flourish as a destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment.

PRESERVING CHARACTER, BUILDING CONNECTIONS

Historic Lebanon Main Street operates under a clear mission: to preserve, enrich, and promote our historic downtown as the vibrant heart of our community. Since earning accreditation through Tennessee Main Street and the National Main Street programs in 2013, the organization has followed a nationally recognized four-point approach—Organization, Design, Promotion, and Economic Vitality. This framework ensures downtown Lebanon is cared for in ways that honor its history while preparing it for the future.

Historic Lebanon Main Street’s role is as much about connection as preservation. The nonprofit collaborates closely with the City of Lebanon, the Chamber of Commerce, the Convention & Visitors Bureau, and The Downtown Lebanon Group, serving as a bridge between building owners, merchants, civic leaders, and residents. By bringing people and resources together, Historic Lebanon helps position downtown as a destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment—a place where history and progress meet.

A COMMUNITY BUILT ON VITALITY

While preservation is a cornerstone, the mission extends well beyond saving historic buildings. “Preservation isn’t just about the past—it’s about

protecting Lebanon’s character while creating opportunities for growth,” says Main Street Director Robyn Willis. That means supporting entrepreneurs, reimagining storefronts, and creating a walkable district full of life.

This vision has produced visible results. Partnerships with the City of Lebanon and grants from the State of Tennessee have revitalized downtown, while property owners continue to reinvest in their storefronts. The 2025 Downtown Business Façade Mini-Grant Program provides funds to enhance downtown’s appearance, supporting the Historic Lebanon Main Street nonprofit ensures local entrepreneurs have the tools they need to thrive. Seasonal touches— such as blooming planters with are a collaboration with the City of Lebanon and the Lebanon High FFA —help create a welcoming atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression.

CELEBRATING SUCCESSES

Some of the most noticeable progress can be seen in building façades. The new Downtown Business Façade Mini-Grant Program helps property owners refresh their storefronts, preserving downtown’s charm while drawing in customers and visitors. New wayfinding kiosks are coming soon and the maps will guide guests throughout downtown, making it easy to explore everything the area has to offer.

Historic Lebanon is proud to support the Downtown Lebanon Group in hosting Rock the Block, a summer concert series that brings people together to enjoy live music, connect with neighbors, and experience the best of downtown. Events like these—along with fundraisers such as the Founders Gala, Cocktails & Costumes Halloween Soirée, and our signature Farm to Table Dinner—showcase how collaboration among organizations, businesses, and volunteers creates meaningful opportunities for the community to gather while fueling downtown’s ongoing revitalization.

THANKFUL FOR COMMUNITY SUPPORT

As the year turns, Historic Lebanon Main Street reflects on the gratitude that fuels its mission. “We’re thankful for our residents, businesses, and partners who believe in downtown’s potential,” Willis says. Whether shopping locally, volunteering time, attending a concert, or supporting the nonprofit, every act of support helps write the next chapter of Lebanon’s story.

BUILDING TOWARD THE FUTURE

Looking forward, Historic Lebanon envisions a bustling, walkable downtown filled with preserved history, thriving storefronts, inviting public spaces, and opportunities for connection. “We want to be recognized as a model Main Street community,” Willis says. “That means thriving businesses, preserved history, and spaces where people want to gather.”

That vision depends on partnership. Current board members, committee volunteers, and community supporters continue to lay the groundwork, while the organization also honors the legacy of leaders who helped shape the program’s foundation.

A SHARED TREASURE

For Willis, one of the most important reminders is that downtown belongs to everyone. “Every shop you visit, every restaurant you enjoy, every event you attend—it all contributes to the ongoing story of Lebanon,” she says. It is a story of gratitude, pride, and partnership—one that continues to grow, brick by brick, storefront by storefront, neighbor by neighbor. And thanks in part to Historic Lebanon Main Street, that story has only just begun.

LIGHTING UP CHRISTMAS

WHAT’S NEW THIS 2025

CHRISTMAS SEASON? FAVORITES?

I've searched high and low in the off season for new vendors with different items. This year we're incorporating more teardrop garland, different textures and colors of greenery, icicle garland, and one project is even getting a snow machine. I think the classic greenery, warm white lighting and red velvet bows is a classic hard to beat. Now we're just looking for additional touches that we can put on it to turn heads of guests and outdo the neighbors.   My favorite and most proud project would have to be the lighting at the Grand Ole Opry –a place where we're always looking for what else can we do and we don't hold back from trying to be creative and discover what else or where else we can put something to make it sparkle more. A creative piece we're proud of here that my decorator designer Tammy and I coordinate on, is our Dolly Parton tree. Complete with ornaments, pink lights and even a start with the queen herself on top. It's an eye catcher for any Dolly fan.

Griswold Illumination brings faith, creativity, and heart to every project, transforming homes and communities into unforgettable holiday wonderlands.

TELL US A STORY THAT CAPTURES THE SPIRIT OF GRISWOLD ILLUMINATION!

I had a last minute Griswold makeover. Remember cousin Eddie showed up last minute and they had to scramble to have enough for everyone? I'm thinking it was a situation like that –last minute, everyone is coming home for Christmas and my wife wants the place to shine. Please help me. We came with garland, wreathes, lights and bows. I told this gentleman to make sure his kids know how hard he worked all night to make it look great for them. It's more important to me that it's noticed and enjoyed than making sure their family knows who did what.

HOW DOES YOUR BACKGROUND IN LANDSCAPING INFLUENCE THE WAY YOU DESIGN HOLIDAY LIGHT DISPLAYS?

The landscape design and Christmas designs are the same. Details, details, details. I have to think of the bigger picture than just lights on a house. I'll ask how do you enter and exit your home? If it's from the side garage, then we need something over there for them to have also. Curb appeal is good but the person paying for this service should have things they like also just for them. Who doesn't feel like a VIP with lights and garland around your garage door? It's like pulling into Santa's workshop!

BEYOND THE LIGHTS THEMSELVES, HOW DO YOU HOPE YOUR WORK IMPACTS FAMILIES AND NEIGHBORHOODS DURING CHRISTMAS?

The biggest and best reward is the Christmas feeling and joy that all of this encompasses, I don't ever feel the need to upsell anything. I have an idea pop in my head and think, this would really make this shine and look great! I want each project to be done to whatever standard needed for the client to view what we've done as pure hallmark Christmas bliss.

WHAT ROLE DOES FAITH AND COMMUNITY PLAY IN HOW YOU RUN GRISWOLD ILLUMINATION THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS?

My faith controls a great deal of how I run Griswold Illumination and Shady Landscaping year round. I rely 100% on the Lord. I can buy lots of plants and lights. I can talk to lots of people. But without walking with Jesus in it all, I won’t go

anywhere and accomplish nothing. I don’t set goals to make a bunch of money or have tons of staff and trucks. My goal is to provide for my family and have a means to help others do the same. My cup runneth over by the grace of God. So I want to fill up other’s cups too.

IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE THE HEART OF GRISWOLD ILLUMINATION IN ONE WORD THIS SEASON, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Creative. With Christmas and landscaping alike, I don’t want to be the cookie cutter design that looks like everyone else’s. I’ve researched more in the offseason to provide unique ideas to make designs unique. Not just lights and a wreath. Different styles of bulbs. Some very interesting garlands and wreaths – half a tree to go against a wall in a small room – upside down trees –nutcrackers bigger than I am. Lots of interesting pieces, thinking more outside the box and pushing my creativity.

A Legacy of Love

The Kim Alverson Foundation Gives Back to Caregivers of Cancer Warriors

The Kim Alverson Foundation is a tribute to a remarkable woman—a wife, mother, and friend who fought cancer with unwavering strength, grace, and faith. Kim’s battle lasted nearly two years, and throughout it, her desire to help others remained strong. After she passed, her family created the foundation to honor her memory and fulfill her wish to support cancer caregivers.

THE HEART OF THE MISSION

Kim was a deeply compassionate person who inspired everyone around her. Her husband Travis and children, Tyler, Kristen, and Leslie, formed the foundation to reflect her values. The foundation’s mission is clear: to show the love of Christ by supporting caregivers as they care for their loved ones battling cancer. The family’s journey began when they noticed a heartbreaking trend during Kim’s treatments— many cancer patients came to their appointments alone, struggling to manage both their health and daily responsibilities. As they brainstormed how to help, they realized the critical role caregivers play in the patient’s recovery. The foundation’s focus shifted to providing much-needed support to caregivers who often sacrifice their own well-being to care for a loved one.

SUPPORTING CAREGIVERS IN CRISIS

Caregivers are vital to a cancer patient’s journey, but they often face financial, emotional, and physical exhaustion. The Kim Alverson Foundation supports caregivers in three ways:

• Financial Support: The foundation helps with daily living expenses like rent, groceries, utilities, and gas, allowing caregivers to focus on supporting their loved one without the constant worry of financial stress.

• Emotional Support: Cancer can be isolating, but the foundation offers counseling and personal connections. Families have access to a listening ear and compassionate support during their toughest times.

• Spiritual Support: For those who seek it, the foundation offers prayer and Bible studies, helping caregivers find peace and strength. While participation is optional, many families embrace the spiritual support offered.

Kim Alverson Golf Tournament

CELEBRATING KIM’S SPIRIT

The foundation’s fundraising events are a joyful celebration of Kim’s life and legacy. This year, the family hosted two major events: a benefit dinner featuring music and comedy, and the First Annual Golf Tournament. Both events focused on joy, laughter, and fun—elements that Kim valued deeply. “Kim had the most beautiful laugh and smile,” Travis shares, “She loved to make sure everyone around her had a good time.”

“I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else,” he continues, The outpouring of love from local businesses and individuals has made the foundation’s work possible.

In just over a year, the Kim Alverson Foundation has already made a significant impact. Families like Veronica’s and Ashleigh’s have expressed their gratitude, noting how the foundation

not only provided financial relief but emotional and spiritual support as well. Veronica shared, “We didn’t just find a foundation, we found answered prayers, friends, and a family.”

As the foundation grows, its mission remains focused on helping those who need it most. Whether it expands to include paid staff or continues with a small, personal touch, the Alverson family is committed to serving others in Kim’s name.

A LEGACY OF SERVICE

For the Alversons, continuing Kim’s legacy is deeply meaningful. “We want to show the love of Christ and give God the glory through everything we do,” he says, helping caregivers in Kim’s memory fills their hearts with joy and purpose.

To get involved, the foundation encourages prayers, wordof-mouth support, and donations. By lifting the foundation up in prayer, sharing its mission, and contributing financially, more cancer caregivers can receive the help they desperately need. The Kim Alverson Foundation is more than just a charity—it’s a lasting tribute to a woman whose love for others continues to change lives.

A Square Full of Style

Square Market Gives Lebanon a Fresh Look for the Holidays

For Jan and Chip, design isn’t just a business—it’s a way of life. The couple, married for 32 years this November, has deep roots in Lebanon and an even deeper passion for making homes beautiful. Their store, Square Market, located just steps from the Lebanon Square, has become a destination for furniture, custom design, and seasonal inspiration. When Jan purchased the store from Paula in 2020, she was stepping into a full-circle moment. Her husband, Chip, had grown up in the furniture business—his family’s store, Smith Furniture, opened in 1947 just as Square Market was getting

its own facelift. Jan had always loved decorating, often rearranging entire rooms while Chip was away. Now, she was finally bringing that passion to a larger audience.

This March, Square Market made a major leap by becoming an official Bassett Furniture Design Center—the only one of its kind in the area. No longer do customers have to drive to Knoxville or Cool Springs to custom-create beds, sofas, sectionals, and more. Every detail—down to legs, cushions, and fabrics—is now fully customizable right here in Lebanon. “We’re little, but we’re big,” Chip says with a smile.

Jan’s vision for Square Market has always been about creating an inviting, high-end experience—and she’s delivered exactly that. Over the past three years, she’s expanded the store’s offerings far beyond what customers expect from the outside. Inside, the space is thoughtfully curated with entire dining and bedroom collections, custom rugs, hand-selected accessories, and everything in between.

“People are always surprised when they walk in,” Jan says. “You can furnish your entire home—room

by room—with pieces that reflect your style and personality.” Every corner of the showroom is designed to spark inspiration, whether you're updating one room or starting fresh in a new space.

Jan also collaborates with a trusted network of designers, giving customers access to a wide range of styles—from traditional to contemporary to mid-century. Her showroom is designed to inspire, offering ready-to-go tablescapes, locally painted art, and even seasonal pillow swaps—one of her favorite ways to refresh a space for fall.

Jan and Chip travel to High Point Market twice a year to stay ahead of trends, ensuring their showroom always reflects what’s new—and what lasts.

Their advice to holiday shoppers? Invest in quality that fits your style and story.  Things like pillows, art, rugs, and lamps are great to swap out seasonally for curated style. Jan says she always kept a closet of pillows with inserts she would change out according to the season.

Chip’s grandfather once said, “If you don’t take care of your customers, your competition will.” At Square Market, it’s clear: every detail is personal.

Radiant Purpose

How Jake and Brittney Hoot Are Using Music and Mission to Change Lives

While Jake Hoot may be best known for winning The Voice and launching a successful country music career, his heart for service—shared deeply with his wife, Brittney—is just as powerful as his voice. Together, the Hoots are raising their family with a strong foundation of faith, love, and global compassion through The Radiant Initiative, a nonprofit founded by Brittney in 2020.

The mission? To bring light to dark places—both literally and spiritually—by organizing outreach efforts that include international missions, women’s empowerment programs, and local community support.

“The Lord actually brought us back together through missions work,” Brittany and Jake share, “And now, it’s something we’re deeply committed to as a family. We want our girls to grow up understanding the importance of serving others and living with purpose.”

From medical clinics and educational outreach to spiritual development and family support, The Radiant Initiative is focused on building lasting impact wherever there is need. The nonprofit has grown rapidly over the last few years, and the Hoots are excited for what lies ahead.

Their next international mission trip is planned for March 2026, and the couple encourages anyone interested to prayerfully consider getting involved. “You don’t have to be a preacher or a doctor to make a difference,” they say, “You just have to show up with love and a willing heart.”

with YOU

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.
