Strategic Wealth Management: The Power Of A Coordinated team

For those who have achieved significant financial success, managing wealth demands the kind of sophisticated coordination and expertise provided by an integrated team like First Business Bank’s Private Wealth group in Leawood. Read on to learn how a united team of experts simplifies your financial life, reduces fees, and helps you make the most of your wealth.

The Frustration of Managing Multiple Financial Relationships

Coordinating between your broker, attorney, CPA, and banker can create unnecessary complexity and leave you managing important transactions alone. When no one takes full responsibility for your complete financial picture, it can lead to delays, missed opportunities, and fragmented advice. Despite paying premium fees to several people, you may still experience disjointed service that lacks the sophisticated coordination your wealth deserves.

What Comprehensive Wealth Management Looks Like

Comprehensive wealth management means having one team that works together, coordinating all aspects of your wealth. Meet Your KC Team At First Business Bank:

Jessica Colby – Vice President – Wealth Advisor, NMLS 553784, is a seasoned Wealth

Advisor, coordinating your entire financial strategy seamlessly.

Christine Walton, JD – Vice President II – Trust Advisor & Trust Counsel, is an attorney and Trust Advisor providing guidance on complex legal, tax, and planning matters, allowing you to efficiently use outside legal and tax resources.

Justin Mahoney, President – Kansas City Market, offers strategic leadership and deep market insight to help clients align their financial plans with long-term business and personal goals.

Their experienced team of fiduciaries serves as your central resource for investment management, charitable giving, business succession, tax, and estate planning, delivering high-touch, family-office service.

They handle personal banking, investment management, bill payment, tax organization, and more, eliminating the need to juggle multiple providers. Acting as your advocate and single point of contact, they coordinate with your existing professionals to ensure complex transactions happen smoothly and efficiently. With financial, trust, and estate matters managed, you can focus on your business and family.

The Bank Trustee Advantage: Trust, Stability, and Expertise

Choosing a bank trustee offers professional oversight and accountability that can help protect both a client’s legacy and family relationships, while removing liability and burden from family members. A corporate fiduciary may reduce expenses compared to hiring both a financial advisor and trust administration attorney, while minimizing potential family conflict by placing administrative and discretionary decisions with an objective third party.

Bank trustees also provide continuity that extends beyond individuals, assuring a consistent wealth management strategy over time. For clients with complex estates and transactions, working with experienced professionals can offer access to tailored solutions delivered with precision and care.

Experience The Difference At First Business Bank

First Business Bank’s Private Wealth team in Leawood combines the personalized attention of a boutique firm with the stability and resources of an established, publicly traded financial institution. With a coordinated approach and experience with complex financial needs, the team helps clients simplify their financial lives and maximize opportunities.

Letter from the Editor

Style is often misunderstood. It’s not about chasing trends or fitting into someone else’s idea of what looks good. True style is a combination of who you are and how you choose to show up. Some days, that means a perfectly tailored blazer. Other days, it’s your favorite worn-in tee, ball cap and old sneakers that have seen better days.

Fashion doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be fun, it can be personal, and it should feel good. So wear what makes you feel most like you. Play with pieces and mix the old with the new. For me, I love that styles that were once popular 20 years ago have cycled back, so finding a good pair of overalls or doc martins feels nostalgic.

In this issue, we’re shining a light on local style that emphasizes personality, comfortability and culture. You’ll find inspiration from people who use fashion as a tool for self-expression, functionality and creativity. Whether you love vintage finds, minimalist staples, bold colors, or simple neutrals, there’s space for your style.

There’s no one right way to “do” style. Style is a deeply personal expression that doesn’t have to fit into a specific mold or follow every trend to be valid. For those of you who don’t feel particularly fashionable or confident in your clothing choices, a capsule wardrobe offers a reassuring sense of structure. It creates a reliable foundation that is built on versatile, well-loved pieces that takes the guesswork out of getting dressed. Whether you lean toward simple basics or love to make a bold statement, we’re here for it. Try something new or don’t. And you’re at it, shopping local is a great way to support your community and small business owners while adding new pieces to your wardrobe.

LIVING STYLE in

THE INTERSECTION OF FASHION AND HOME

INthis unexpected love affair, fashion and interiors are more than just a simple pairing—they are rooted in culture, creativity, and the human desire for self-expression.

As conscious consumers of the 21st century, participating in a retail landscape that is oversaturated and struggling to adapt to the ever-changing demands of the modern customer, our purchasing power should not only respond to a feeling of want but also prioritize items that reflect who we

are and who we aspire to be. This is clearly visible through the representation of fashion and interiors.

Although we tend to consider cost-per-wear primarily when it comes to clothing, this same principle applies to furniture and the function it brings to the home. Aesthetics and functionality both play a role in this pairing, painting a picture for the rest of the world of who the wearer is and how they live in their space.

The woman who wears a blazer with sharp shoulders that CONTINUED >

makes her feel powerful in her everyday life—or the black dress that gives her a necessary boost of confidence—may naturally gravitate toward sleek, modern furniture that feels equally strong and elevates the space where the modern woman thrives.

In the same way, someone who prefers an effortless ensemble—like their favorite white T-shirt and comfortable denim jeans—may also look for home pieces that are functional and make their guests feel at ease. Even a handmade rug, one that sparks conversation about where it was found and adds a focal point to a room, mirrors how we search our closets for a sweater tied to a cherished memory.

Just as we carefully choose outfits to express ourselves, it’s equally important to ensure that our living spaces are designed with the same intention. More than ever, modern buyers are making purchasing decisions based on personal morals and values, forming a new wave of consumers who seek products that are both high-quality and environmentally or socially conscious, whether for themselves or their homes.

The following imagery affirms that living a timeless lifestyle across all aspects of life is possible through the thoughtful styling of sustainable clothing and vintage furniture. As the modern retail landscape continues to evolve, it’s become increasingly vital to make conscious consumer choices—ones that allow us to express our truest selves through both our wardrobes and the places we call home.

VERBENA

deeply rooted in hospitality, locally inspired, and unafraid to raise the bar

Located inside the charming Inn at Meadowbrook in Leawood, Verbena is a restaurant that manages to feel both elegant yet familiar. Whether you’re here for an intimate date night, lunch with friends, or a solo cocktail at the bar, Verbena delivers comfort with a sophisticated edge.

The restaurant opened quietly during the pandemic and since then, it’s blossomed into a local favorite for those in the know. The bright, airy dining room is bordered by a wraparound patio that overlooks the lush greenery of Meadowbrook Park, giving diners an unexpected yet welcome escape just steps from Prairie Village.

At the heart of Verbena’s day-to-day operations is General Manager Joe Follett. With more than two decades in the hospitality industry, Joe knows how to create a seamless guest experience.

“After years in fast-paced, multi-concept environments, I was ready to return to upscale, full-service dining,” says Follett. “Verbena felt like home almost immediately.  I'm proud to be part of such a special place.”

That feeling of home comes through in the service, but it’s the food that anchors the experience. The menu nods to east coast classics while celebrating midwestern ingredients. You’ll also find plenty of thoughtful small plates to start things off.

“Some of the most popular dishes are the bang bang shrimp, maple and miso glazed Faroe Island salmon, and the linguini and clams. I really enjoy the hamachi tostada and the seared foie gras from the small plates menu, and the lobster and crab roll or the Berkshire pork ribeye chop from the large plates menu.”

Verbena’s bar program is equally compelling, with craft cocktails that rotate seasonally and a curated wine list that’s garnered more than a few awards. Sip on a Spring Water made with vodka,

elderflower, apricot, lime, sparkling rosé, or their signature old fashioned made with an exclusive single-barrel whiskey. Even their mocktails are worth a detour—light, refreshing, and beautifully balanced.

Their welcoming spirit extends to their local partnerships as well. Verbena works with a host of regional purveyors, from Ibis Bakery to 2 Birds Farm and Salt Creek Meats, bringing the freshest possible ingredients into the kitchen.

For those not quite ready for a full meal, just head next door to The Market at Meadowbrook, Verbena’s more casual sister spot, to grab coffee, lunch, or a pastry on the go.

Verbena is a reflection of where Kansas City’s dining scene is headed: deeply rooted in hospitality, locally inspired, and unafraid to raise the bar.

“Verbena is elegant and refined, but very approachable.  We want everyone in our care to feel as comfortable as they possibly can be.”

Verbena is located at 4901 Meadowbrook Parkway in Prairie Village. For more information, visit verbenakc.com.

The Capsule Wardrobe Every Man Should Own

Style doesn’t have to be complicated.

ARTICLE BY AMANI SKALACKI

A capsule wardrobe is all about quality over quantity — a streamlined collection of timeless pieces that work together and never go out of style. Think of it as the backbone of your closet, where every item earns its place and serves a purpose.

Originally, the concept of a capsule wardrobe was geared toward men — not because men chase trends, but often because they skip the basics. Many overlook the power of having well-made, versatile staples that make dressing effortless.

So, what should be in a man’s capsule collection? Start with the essentials: a tailored wool or cashmere blazer, straight-leg denim in both a dark and casual wash, a structured wool overcoat, and a solid cotton or wool sweater for layering. Add a crisp button-down shirt — or two — and you’ve built the foundation.

Stick to timeless colors: navy, olive green, grey, khaki, chocolate brown, and black. These shades mix and match with ease and always look sharp. For patterns, heritage classics like plaid, check, herringbone, and houndstooth add depth without overwhelming the look.

When it comes to fabric, focus on the good stuff — cashmere, cotton, denim, and wool. These materials age well, hold their shape, and elevate even the simplest outfit.

Once you’ve nailed the core pieces, dressing becomes second nature. Whether you’re heading to the office, out on the weekend, or packing for a trip, you’ll have the confidence of knowing everything works together.

All of the wardrobe featured in this article was provided by Houndstooth Menswear, located in River Market and Leawood. Eyewear was generously provided by EyeStyle at Mission Farms. Key pieces include a navy blue wool coat and straight-leg denim jeans, perfectly paired with a navy cotton button-down shirt for a clean, classic look. A cashmere suit jacket in a brown and white herringbone pattern adds texture and sophistication, while relaxed straight-leg denim can be dressed up with a green suede button-down or kept casual with a green cotton sweater. Another standout: a navy wool jacket layered over a crisp cotton shirt and denim. For a bit of heritage flair, a blue plaid cashmere blazer pairs effortlessly with a soft cotton sweater and dark denim. Every item in this feature was chosen for its timeless appeal and versatility — pieces that can be mixed, matched, and worn again and again. Begin with the classics, and you’ll never look out of place, even when adding a seasonal trend or two.

Simple. Stylish. Smart.

Troop 10 Celebrates 50 Years of Service, Leadership, and Legacy

"Every Scout troop is only as strong as the leaders behind it. Troop 10 has been fortunate to be guided by generations of dedicated, selfless leaders who have poured their time, values, and mentorship into shaping young boys and girls. That influence lives on in the adults they become. In Scouting, there is no greater legacy than this." — James Velghe

That powerful statement reflects why Scout Troop 10 is proudly celebrating five decades of meaningful service to the Leawood community.

Founded in 1975 and originally chartered by the Leawood Middle School PTO, Troop 10 has since grown into one of the area’s most enduring Scouting traditions. Since 2009, the Leawood Lions Club has proudly served as its charter organization, extending support and leadership that continues to shape young lives through character development, service, and adventure.

Troop 10’s strength lies in its dedicated network of trained volunteer leaders—many of whom remain involved long after their children have moved on. These individuals help

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

instill Scouting’s timeless values of integrity, responsibility, and service. Their ongoing involvement reflects the lasting impact Troop 10 has had on families and the wider community.

Over the past 50 years, Troop 10 has helped develop more than 600 Eagle Scouts, Scouting’s highest honor. In 2019, the troop’s reach expanded with the launch of sister troop 6010, offering more opportunities for youth to grow, serve, and lead.

Together, both troops represent a vibrant community dedicated to developing servant leaders and upholding the Scout Oath and Law.

One of Troop 10’s most inspiring initiatives has been the Eagle Corps program, founded by local leaders Patti Cokington, Jim Shetler, and John Ahart. This innovative program connects teams of Eagle Scouts with troops in need of mentorship and support.

For one year, these experienced Scouts assist with meetings, advancement opportunities, merit badges, camping trips, and ceremonial events. Eagle Corps fosters a unique exchange of leadership, bridging gaps and helping younger Scouts thrive— while ensuring Eagle Scouts continue their growth journey.

From local service to epic expeditions, Troop 10 delivers a robust calendar of opportunities. Each summer, 100- 200 Scouts and adult leaders attend the 10-Day Summer Camp at the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation, earning hundreds of merit badges, enhancing Scouting’s values with the Micosay leadership program, and building lifelong friendships.

For Scouts age 14 and older, High Adventure Expeditions offer unforgettable challenges across North America. Destinations include:

• Philmont Scout Ranch (New Mexico)

• Boundary Waters (Canada)

• Rocky Mountain High Adventure Base (Colorado)

These experiences inspire confidence, resilience, and leadership—qualities that stay with Scouts for life.

Service is central to everything Troop 10 stands for. Over the years, the troop has contributed more than 600 Eagle Scout service projects, often requiring teams of volunteers and hundreds of hours of planning and labor. These projects alone account for over 24,000 hours of community service—benefiting local schools, city beautification projects, civic events, and more.

Mayor Marc Elkins of Leawood summed it up best.

"The promise of Scouting and the legacy of Troop 10 are reflected in the values we hold as a community. Through the Scout Oath and Law, young people learn to become servant leaders—adults of strong character and purpose. The roots of that transformation begin with our chartered organizations and the selfless volunteer leaders who give their time, year after year, to see our youth thrive."

The Leawood Lions Club, Troop 10’s charter organization, has played a vital role in the troop’s continued success. Currently supporting eight Scouting units, the Lions Club sees Scouting as a natural extension of its mission to serve the community.

Mike Schaefer, former Scoutmaster of Troop 10 and 2024–2025 President of the Leawood Lions Club, shared,  "The motto of the Lions Clubs is ‘We Serve.’ Troop 10 is not just one of the units we support—it’s part of who we are. Many Lions members are also parents of Troop 10 Scouts and Eagles. This is a troop that represents the spirit of our community in action—through flag details, service projects, and leadership in local, state, and city events."

On August 10th, Troop 10 and Troop 6010 came together for a 50th Anniversary Picnic Celebration, joined by alumni, current Scouts, leaders, and families. It was a joyful reflection on five decades of growth, friendship, service, and shared purpose.

As the troop looks ahead to the next 50 years, the mission remains the same: to provide young people with the skills, values, and opportunities to become responsible, service-minded leaders.

The Style Approach

When Danielle Huppe moved from the fastpaced fashion world of New York to Kansas City a few years ago, she didn’t leave her style instincts behind. Instead, she brought with her a deep passion for personal expression, a heart for community, and over 20 years of industry experience. The result is The Style Approach, a Kansas City-based styling company built on the belief that fashion should be personal, empowering, and accessible to all.

“While fashion has always been a part of my journey, my first love has always been community and connection,” says Danielle. “I use fashion as a tool to build both and bridge community and fashion. To me, it’s never just about clothes—it’s about the stories we tell through what we wear and how that creates real, human connection.

“That love of self-expression sparked a career that’s spanned over 20 years. I studied the business of fashion in college, became certified in wardrobe styling, image consulting, and fashion event production, and worked across many corners of the industry, from retail and product development to New York Fashion Week, editorial shoots, and one-on-one client work. I created The Style

Approach with a clear purpose: to help clients feel powerful, seen, and completely themselves in what they wear. Whether it’s editing their closet, curating a look for a big moment, or just helping them fall back in love with getting dressed, my goal is to make style personal, expressive, and joyful again.”

Danielle has created a variety of services that meet people exactly where they are. Some of her most popular services are the Wardrobe Cleanse and Wardrobe Style Out services.

“There’s something so powerful about starting the day with a closet that feels clear, intentional, and aligned with who you are right now. It brings peace, confidence, and clarity. What I love about the edit is that we’re not starting from scratch. I help clients shop their own closet, minimizing waste and getting creative with the pieces they already own. Sometimes, clients have amazing items they’ve collected over time, but they don’t know how to pull them together or wear them in multiple ways. That’s where I come in!”

Her work also extends into the professional world, especially for Kansas City’s growing population of entrepreneurs and small business owners. Her Image Curator Package focuses on aligning appearance with purpose, whether someone is launching a business, stepping into a new leadership role, or simply refining their public presence. She helps them shape a visual identity that tells their story before they ever say a word.

“I love helping entrepreneurs here in Kansas City shape how they visually show up to the world. We go beyond clothes—it’s about curating a look that matches the narrative you’re stepping into. Kansas City has such an inspiring entrepreneurial

spirit, and I feel lucky to be part of this supportive community that celebrates bold new chapters.”

Every client begins with a Style Discovery Consultation where a conversation is had about lifestyle, goals, and how they currently feel about fashion.

“Some clients love clothes but are unsure about their style. Others don’t want to think about it at all, they just want smart, elevated options and just do not have the spare time. From there, I use tools like color analysis and body shape guidance to help them understand what truly flatters. My process blends the influence of global fashion runways with real-life practicality. Every session is personal, relaxed, and a little bit of fun, like a confidence date with your best stylist friend. I personally know the power and confidence that goes from feeling good in your clothes.”

From seasonal updates to personalized shopping experiences, her service menu is designed to be both flexible and approachable. With an emphasis on supporting Kansas City’s own fashion designers and boutiques, her personal shopping services prioritize local style with intention. For those looking to refine their wardrobe and elevate their everyday image, her most comprehensive offering, the Image Curator package, includes everything from closet editing to fullscale personal shopping and image consulting, tailored for both professional and personal impact.

As a mother of four, Danielle knows how easy it is to lose yourself in the busyness of life, but she also knows the impact of starting your day feeling confident and seen. Her hope is to remind her clients that their wardrobe can be a source of strength, clarity, and celebration.

In addition to her styling work, she remains deeply connected to her roots in community-building. She serves on the board of Fashion Group International Kansas City and is passionate about supporting local creatives and businesses. She also plans to relaunch Style for Purpose, a charitable initiative she began in New York that provides fashion empowerment events to women in shelters right here in Kansas City.

No matter the service, Danielle brings the same heart and intentionality to every session.

“Style should feel like a celebration, not a chore. Getting dressed should light you up and it should be something that reflects you. Your wardrobe begins and ends your day. It deserves to feel just as good as your morning coffee or your favorite health regimen. I always say know your body type, understand your color palette, but also trust your joy. Wear the pieces that make you feel something.

“Style has the power to start conversations, spark confidence, and remind you of who you are. And that’s really what I’m here to help with: to walk alongside them in that journey and reflect back their greatness, through their wardrobe.”
