15 Years of Leawood City Lifestyle

This September, we have the honor of celebrating a remarkable milestone—our 15th anniversary of Leawood Lifestyle. As we reflect on the moments of the past decade and a half, we are filled with gratitude for the community that has embraced us, shaped us, and journeyed with us through the years.

Leawood is a community that continues to inspire and impress us, home to individuals whose stories are as diverse as they are profound. From the very beginning, our mission has been to bring you the stories that matter most and to celebrate the people and businesses who make this community special.

City Lifestyle has expanded far beyond our humble beginnings in the middle of the map. What started as a single publication has grown into a network that now serves over 200 communities across the country, impacts more than 5 million people every month, and has a footprint larger than some of the most iconic publications in the world, including Vanity Fair and Vogue.

Yet, even as we have grown, we remain deeply committed to our origin here in Leawood. After traveling across the country, it is here that my family calls home. We live here, shop here, and raise our children in this beautiful community that we cherish. The memories we have created together and the lives we have touched over these 15 years are the foundation of our continued success. We are profoundly grateful for the trust you have placed in us to be a continued part of Leawood’s story.

As we look ahead to the future, we are excited to continue our mission of bringing you the stories that matter most. We are committed to celebrating the remarkable people who make Leawood a truly special place. The journey of the past 15 years has been incredible, but we believe the best is yet to come.

Time has flown by, but the relationships we’ve built and the stories we’ve shared have made every moment meaningful. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your story and for being the heart of everything we do. We look forward to seeing you around!

Luxury Livable

NEW CUSTOM HOME FOUR YEARS IN THE MAKING SETS

NEW HEIGHTS IN LOCH LLOYD RESORT LIVING

The City of Loch Lloyd is home to a newly built $6.5 million estate that epitomizes luxury living and is designed for entertaining. Finished in March of this year, this transitional stone and frame Californiainspired home took four years to custom build on a premiere estate lot atop a hill overlooking the 110-acre lake.

“This stunning home redefines luxury living with unparalleled sophistication and breathtaking views,” says Rebekah Schaaf, representative for the homeowner, “yet it’s still tranquil and relaxing. It’s truly a home for entertaining and spending time with family and friends.”

Rebekah says that the home has “great vibes throughout” for spending time together both inside and outside.

Located at 16509 MacAllister Court, the home boasts 6,853 square feet of living space, with four bedrooms, seven bathrooms, two gourmet kitchens and three fireplaces. There’s also an elevator, media room, sauna/spa and a golf simulator. The amenities continue outside with an indoor/outdoor poolside bar, a built-in pizza oven and grill, a fireplace with a seating area and a swimming pool that heats in the winter and cools in the summer.

“It’s the ultimate sanctuary for relaxation and entertaining,” Rebekah says. “Its location on a slightly elevated site allows for panoramic lake views from every window on every level in the home yet with complete privacy. The interior has tons of natural light and is very open with its beamed ceilings and large living spaces. It was designed with sleek, modern details that include two gourmet kitchens and a huge island that family and friends can gather around, herringbone wood flooring in rift-and-quartered white oak, custom furnishings and the finest craftmanship throughout, including $200,000 worth of marble.”

Rebekah says the home’s tranquil tone begins with the color scheme and extends to the materials and finishes selected by both the homeowner and the designer, Leann Lynn, with McCroskey Interiors.

“Also, the architect Scott Bickford is one of the most renowned architects in KC,” Rebekah adds. “He has more than 40 years’ experience working with clients from literally all over the world. And the home builders, Cecil & Ray Builders, are one of the select builders in Loch Lloyd. They build no more than 8–10 homes per year, so they can be onsite and hands-on during the entire custom building process.”

The home is located within the Loch Lloyd Country Club—home to a Tom Watson signature designed 18-hole golf course, restaurants, tennis/pickleball, pool, fitness center and more. The lake is a no-wake lake, requiring boats to travel at slow speeds, perfect for paddleboarding, kayaking and pontoon boats.

“The word is out now and has spread about how wonderful it is to live in Loch Lloyd.”

Downtown Kansas City can be reached in a 25-minute drive, with Leawood, Kansas just 10 minutes away. Rebekah adds that Loch Lloyd has 24-hour gated security, along with a strong sense of community. Numerous social gatherings appeal to all ages, including kid-friendly programs.

“When you enter Loch Lloyd, you feel like you’re on vacation with the rolling hills, trees, flowers and the overall natural lush landscape,” Rebekah says.

She adds that since the pandemic, the community has grown in popularity due to the world-class amenities conveniently available without having to travel. New homes continue to be built in different areas of the community, attracting families, retirees and the occasional professional athlete.

“The word is out now and has spread about how wonderful it is to live in Loch Lloyd,” Rebekah says. “People just love living here.”

HISTORICAL fashion collection

AT THE JOHNSON COUNTY MUSEUM

ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Joy Rhodes is the esteemed Department Chair of Fashion Design and Merchandising at Johnson County Community College. She is delighted to announce an exciting exhibit called “Free to Be...A 1960s Fashion Revolution” that delves into the dynamic world of 1960s women's fashion. This display showcases clothing that epitomizes the era's spirit of self expression and cultural transformation.

“The JCCC Historical Fashion Collection was gifted to the college in the early 1990’s and has grown over the years to include over 2,000 pieces,” says Rhodes. “The collection includes pieces dating back to the late 1800’s through the early 2000’s. Up until recently, the collection has been used as a teaching tool for students to learn about the evolution of fashion and how it parallels what was happening in history at that time. The collection is used in many JCCC fashion classes to learn about fashion history, textiles, terminology, details and is a fantastic source of inspiration for aspiring design students.”

Due to space limitations on campus, the collection, which is not open to the public, has been primarily used as an internal teaching resource. Recognizing the importance of sharing this treasure trove with the broader community, JCCC has partnered with the Johnson County Museum to display select pieces for public enjoyment.

“At this point we do not have a space on the JCCC campus to effectively showcase pieces for the community, so in an effort to gain more visibility for the collection, we have partnered with Johnson County Museum to display pieces for the public to enjoy.”

The collection includes pieces dating back to the late 1800’s through the early 2000’s.

Two dedicated faculty members, Audrey Michaelis and Britt Benjamin, led the curation of the 1960s exhibit. Their research and collaboration with museum staff resulted in a stunning showcase of four key fashion genres from the decade: modernists, naturalists, socialites and professionals. Each genre reflects the significant societal changes of the 1960s, from the futuristic designs inspired by space exploration to the earthy aesthetics of the counterculture movement.

The majority of the collection was donated by prominent Kansas City society women before being officially gifted to the college.

“We have continued to accept donations since then with the most recent donation being just a couple years ago and included over 350 ensembles. We are currently at capacity and only accepting pieces with notable historical significance. Our main focus now is to bring awareness and raise the funds to help preserve the collection for future generations to come.”

Rhodes has many favorites within the collection.

“I have many favorite pieces in the collection, many of which are not a part of this exhibit. If I had to pick my favorites from the exhibit, I would probably choose the black

carwash dress or the black dress with red inset detail, both designed by Pierre Cardin, a very important designer of this decade. He was heavily inspired by the space exploration that was happening at the time and created his own version of Space Age fashion.”

Visitors to the exhibit can expect an immersive experience, exploring the era's bold and diverse fashion trends. See the iconic garments and listen to different speaker series, which offer historical context to the social and cultural movements.

“We are hoping to secure funding to help better preserve and protect the collection so that it can be enjoyed for many generations to come—this includes air filtration, temperature control, dust and pest control, and covered storage cabinets to ensure we can continue to use this treasured collection for educational opportunities," explains Rhodes.

"The JCCC Historical Fashion Collection is an invaluable asset that the college possesses and we are excited to share it with the local community in collaboration with the Johnson County museum."

Fall's 5 Biggest Trends

POWER REDS

From casual wear to shoes, red is the must-have color this season! Go bold with a head-to-toe look, or enhance a neutral outfit with a standout accessory. In Kansas City, this trend is a sure hit.

PREP SCHOOL

The resurgence of the Rugby Polo and track pants is bringing back high school memories. This trend features an abundance of stripes, polos, loafers, and a lot of navy. These timeless pieces are great investments that can be styled for many seasons to come.

PATTERN PLAY

Fall '24 is all about redefining tradition. This season, expect to see a deliberate blend of fabrics and patterns in garments like blazers, dresses, and denim. Take this custom ELV blazer, for example—crafted from two different fabrics that harmonize perfectly. Pieces like this elevate an outfit from good to great.

RODEO CHIC

Country is cool again, and we're loving the nods to horses, cowboy boots, and lasso-inspired details. Denim skirts paired with tall boots and western-inspired knits create an incredibly versatile look. Be sure to add a statement belt to your fall shopping list—it really completes the outfit.

WALLFLOWER PRINTS

Who says florals are only for spring? This fall, expect to see floral prints trending in moody colors and heavier fabrics. Pair them with rich textures like leather or suede to ground these feminine florals and add a striking contrast to your outfits.

Vita's PLACE

ARTICLE BY JENNY VERGARA
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

When Ryan and Jenny Sciara, the owners of the retail wine shop, Underdog Wine Co., travel finding great wine is always on the itinerary. One of their favorite things to do is seek out wine bars in the area, and sample a variety of wines while they soak in the local culture. They found the wine bars they loved the most, had a curated wine list, some wine-related cocktails and inspired small plates in a dark and cozy, intimate spot with old world patina blended with modern design.

That was the inspiration for their neighborhood wine bar, Vita’s Place, named after Ryan’s grandmother, that is now open in the Crestwood Shops. When they decided to open a wine bar, Ryan was at the right place at the right time to snap up the lease for a small hair salon. The best part? The space was located just steps away from their popular wine shop.

The couple asked John O’Brien, owner of Hammer Out Design, for help. A modern-day renaissance man, O’Brien

is known for having the eye of an artist and the skill of a master builder. He has a list of specialized local artists and tradesmen whom he likes to bring into different projects, including Justin Gainan, who has worked with O’Brien for more than 20 years. Hammer Out Design is responsible for creating the look for so many restaurants and bars in this town including Rye on the Plaza, Golden Ox’s renovation, Nighthawk, a bar located in the bottom of Hotel Kansas City, Harry’s Country Club, Brown & Loe, Amigoni Urban Winery, Earl’s Premier, Bacaro Primo, Aixois in Leawood and now Vita’s Place, just to name a few.

“Working with John was an excellent experience from start to finish. He has created some of the best restaurants and bars in Kansas City, and we had all these industry friends in common,” says Ryan. “We gave John our wish list from visiting wine bars all over the world, and he took all of that and made it even better.”

CONTINUED >

The resulting 750 square foot bar is warm and convivial with cream-colored walls, a large dark wood bar that features a warmly lit back bar covered in goldenrod subway tiles designed by local artist Andy Brayman, the founder of The Matter Factory, a local ceramics studio. A vestibule that was built inside the front door lined with reclaimed beadboard paneling, created in a cozy nook for 10 people to sit in the window. In addition to some patio seats outside, Vita’s place also has a finished basement space for private parties or walk-ins.

“John and his team make a place look brand new and still retain a warmth or a kind of patina that only comes with age. Everything in our bar looks like it has always been there,” says Ryan. “Part of John’s magic is his ability to find or build the very thing that will make your place look like it has some character or age, for example, he brought in two old doors from a farmhouse on the east coast were sanded and stained to make our drink rail and to wrap the bar that instantly added a kind of history to this space.”

Vita’s Place is more than just a gorgeous neighborhood spot to catch up with a friend or partner, it also has the benefit of the couple’s deep knowledge of wine informing the list organized by light, medium and full-bodied wines. If wine isn’t your thing, there is also a full bar here, with the cocktail menu that leans into wine-based cocktails, spritzes and non-alcoholic drinks.

In addition to serving a fine selection of creative meat and cheese plates, chef Owen Manning, is also dishing up a rotating list of specials for those looking for something a little more substantial like seared beef tenderloin with salsa verde, veal tonnato, smoked langoustine, and baked fairytale eggplant with a creamy Amontillado sherry sauce. Get the burnt Basque cheesecake with sour cherries to end your meal.

More than just a wine bar, Vita’s Place, feels grounded with a sense of place and purpose. It makes you feel like you are having a glass of wine in your grandmother’s kitchen, and in a way you are.

GILLETT HEALTH

ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Dr. Mark L Gillett, MD, is a distinguished family physician who has dedicated his career to helping patients of all ages achieve and maintain optimal health.

Growing up in Kansas, Dr. Gillett knew early on that he wanted to pursue a career in family medicine, driven by a passion for supporting the wellbeing of individuals across all stages of life.

Dr. Gillett earned his degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, laying a strong foundation for his medical career. He then completed a three year residency in family medicine at the University of Texas, honing his skills and deepening his commitment to patient care. Following his residency, he worked in emergency departments in Texas for two years, gaining valuable experience in acute care.

Dr. Gillett's journey continued as he joined College Park Family Care Center, where he served as a primary care physician. His dedication to his patients and leadership qualities led him to serve as chief medical officer of this esteemed medical group for many years. During this time, he enjoyed the unique experience of working alongside his son, Dr. Kyle Gillett, who is also board certified in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine. Together, they provided comprehensive care, with Dr. Kyle delivering babies for some of the patients Dr. Gillett had originally delivered two decades earlier.

As Dr. Gillett's practice grew, he faced the challenges typical of many primary care physicians.

“I knew I wanted to be a family physician so I could help patients of all ages live healthy lives,” says Dr. Gillett. “My traditional medical practice had grown to the point I was fully booked for more than

a year. It was getting hard to take care of thousands of patients, which is typical for most primary care physicians. After health insurance companies began putting more restrictions on what imaging studies, lab tests and medications they would help pay for, Kyle started Gillett Health, which is a concierge and direct primary care practice. These types of services require a membership and don't replace traditional health insurance. It takes healthcare to a new, higher level.”

Dr. Gillett embraced this new model that allows him to spend more time with each patient.

“After recently joining Gillett Health with my son and a group of outstanding providers and staff, I have decided to limit my practice to only about five hundred patients. I plan to spend the next 10-15 years practicing medicine in this manner, as I really enjoy being able to spend a lot more time with each patient, focusing on helping them achieve their goals of vigorous health. Testing available through Gillett Health makes it much easier for me to customize an individualized medicine program for each person.”

This comprehensive testing enables them to customize care plans based on each patient's unique factors.

“In my previous practice, it was often a struggle to get insurance companies to pay for the needed testing in order to figure out why my patients did not feel like they were reaching their full health potential. At Gillett Health it is easier for me to evaluate each person's particular metabolic, genetic, environmental, nutritional and other unique factors in order to come up with a plan to help them achieve a more energetic, optimal state of full health.

“The lab, imaging and medication discounts available through Gillett Health allow me to evaluate health concerns in greater depth for a fraction of what these tests often cost through traditional medical insurance companies. This allows me to treat my patients very effectively. This new approach allows me to take someone's medical evaluation to a significantly higher level, and enables a person to actually be restored to good health rather than just be prescribed medication to try to partially cover up the symptoms of underlying health problems.”

Dr. Gillett shares personalized tips for his patients wanting a happier, healthier life.

“I am able to focus on what we like to call the “Pillars of Good Health.” These

include various techniques to help achieve great sleep, focusing on eating the right amounts of the right foods for each person's individual metabolism, getting the right amount of the proper kinds of exercise at a level of intensity that is appropriate for that particular person and managing stress by paying attention to social, spiritual, emotional and psychological aspects of life. For example, volunteering at a charity aligned with an individual's own values, from time to time, often pays tremendous dividends in a person's overall social outlook and enjoyment of life.”

Gillett Health is located at 6807 West 121st Street in Leawood.  For more information, visit gilletthealth.com
