Home. It is where we should all feel like we can let our guard down and completely be ourselves. It should be a place of rest, rejuvenation, love and acceptance and a place of protection from the outside world. Some homes feel just like that while others are filled with tension and conflict. It is never too late to change the culture of our home. We can be a part of consciously choosing to set the tone of our home and cultivate a culture of acceptance and love within our walls that our family and friends who are entrusted to us feel when they walk through our door.
When I became a mother, I remember holding each one of my four kids as a newborn and thinking about how much I wanted to protect them from rejection and heartache. I wanted them to always love themselves for exactly who they were and to feel secure in themselves independent of successes or failures and regardless if others made them feel valued or inferior. I wanted them to know my love came without conditions and that they never had to prove their worth. Most of us want that for our children. While I knew I couldn’t control how they were perceived and treated while outside of my home, I knew I had the power to create a home that was a safe haven with no need to prove themselves worthy, no need to impress—they were cherished no matter what. While I am not perfect at this, and I am sure my kids could be the first to say I have messed up more than a few times, I work hard at creating a healthy home environment. I am continually learning with each new age and stage that my kids reach, and thankfully I have wonderful mentors that I look up to that teach me by example.
March is our home issue. We wanted to share a gorgeous home in Loch Lloyd with you, and while the home is stunning, the family that lives within the walls of this home is a lovely example of a family that has built a culture of love within their home. We also wanted to share some of our favorite interior designers with you that excel at creating a home interior that is so stunning that you will never want to leave.
We hope your home is filled with love and health this spring, and if you are a basketball fan, filled with the joys of March Madness. Rock Chalk! (And if you are a Wildcat fan, EMAW.)

DLR Group is an integrated design firm, providing architecture, engineering, and interiors from 32 offices nationwide. What prompted us to move to the Aspiria campus was the need for a temporary lease space while we refurbished our existing 25,000 SF building. We signed up for a 6-month period during our remodel. Our lease included every utility, free parking and all the amenities. I would recommend the Aspiria campus to others in a similar situation and add that it’s been extraordinarily convenient ”

The Village of Loch Lloyd is home to a unique residence that seamlessly blends French elegance with modern comfort. With a grandmother with French heritage and New Orleans roots, and a husband having a background in construction, their collaboration resulted in a home that is both a tribute to family traditions and a showcase of architectural prowess.
“The inspiration for our home came from our travels to the Loire Valley, about two hours southwest of Paris, which offers France's greatest array of châteaues. This is where the aristocrats from Paris retreated to hunt. My husband is an avid hunter and I wasn't thrilled to do a home with hunting decor. However, after we visited the Loire Valley, I could see how we could mix our styles.”
The home is full of detail, evident in every room. The staircase draws inspiration from Haussmann architecture, reminiscent of French apartment buildings.

“Haussmann-style architecture is synonymous with modern-day Paris and Montpelier. They were designed by 19th-century official Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann, who revamped the city in a vast project that remodeled over 12,000 structures to match his refined design. The stair rail and exterior iron was custom manufactured by Oriental Ideas.”
The kitchen features 18th-century credenzas, and the brick barrel vault adds a touch of antiquity. The wine nook boasts a brick ceiling inspired by an Italian Villa, and bathrooms showcase stone walls and antique elements.
“18th century credenzas were purchased and dismantled to be used for the facing of the kitchen cabinets and various other areas throughout the house. The wine credenzas were built with antique furniture that was dismantled and we used wine boxes for the drawers.”
Wood herringbone floors, interior stone walls, antique French chandeliers, imported marble fireplace, church spire, archways, and a groin vaulted foyer create a harmonious symphony of elements throughout the house. Imported, repurposed French panel doors and ornate scrolled iron further enhance the old-world charm. The exterior, with recessed and bull-nosed walls, door, and window thresholds, exudes the appearance of a timeless masonry foundation.

“Every room has been thought through with an obsession to detail. The home opens from east to west and south. When the weather is pleasant, we frequently open all the doors from the front of the home to a pea gravel veranda and to the back that surrounds the pool and outdoor living area.”
While the road to realizing their dream home was not without hurdles, the homeowners found solace in the expertise of Elswood Smith Carlson Architects, PA. Architects John Mackaman and Weston Coble played a crucial role in understanding and executing the intricate details envisioned by the homeowners.

Describing their style as "Maison de maître," a term denoting a residence with the architectural detail of a château but slightly smaller, the home embodies the essence of the Loire Valley. It's a fusion of grandeur and warmth that defines this unique style.
The couple frequently sources their antiques from Woodson Place, a treasure trove with a historical narrative behind each piece. Their advice to fellow antique enthusiasts: shop for what you like, relish unique finds, and appreciate the stories embedded in each item. The homeowners have woven the essence of France into the fabric of their home. Every corner tells a story, echoing the landscapes and culture they've encountered during their travels.

Kristen Ridler of Kristen Ridler Design was drawn to interior design due to her love of art and building. “I lived at the Nelson Atkins during design school, and one of my favorite classes was the study of cathedrals around the world.” Her passion continued to grow from there. Kristen Ridler Design Firm specializes in all inclusive new construction interior design. They like to start with the architect’s plans and help clients find and source all items for their home—from outdoor finishes to appliances to furniture. Kristen Ridler Design is known for more of a modern, clean aesthetic. They love to work in different styles but will always strive for balance and clean lines. “We are very hands-on and like to start with design board inspirations and work renderings of specific areas.,” explains Kristen. “We gather samples that we look at and analyze before showing the client. We also work hand in hand with the builder and love to be a part of the entire process.” It can be both an exciting and stressful process to build a home, so Kristen explains that they really enjoy helping the client navigate that process so that it is smooth and that their needs are met. “Great communication is important,’ says Ridler. “Make sure your designer understands your design style, or if you aren’t sure, they can help you figure that out. Trust your designer. They will usually pull you out of your comfort zone to create the perfect space that fits your lifestyle.”

Cooking zones are imperative to a well-designed kitchen.” Leann Lynn adds, “Design your space for how you want to live in it. Don’t design around a trend, and keep your decisions true to yourself. Kendra Miner is known for designing unique ceiling details and one-of-a-kind fireplaces that are built out of unexpected materials. When asked if she had any advice for our readers, she responded, “Make sure to clearly define your expectations and roles, and then let the designer introduce you to resources that you might not be aware of to help you create your one of a kind home. “ She also noted that social media highlights unique designs but does not show all the detail that goes into creating that look. Working with a qualified interior designer can save the clients time and money to achieve the desired look they want in their space. CONTINUED >
Katy Cassaw and Kat Benson of Nest Interiors have both always loved art and anything creative. Being from small towns, they weren’t introduced to the interior design profession until college. Katy initially went to school to become an art teacher, and Kat planned to go into fashion. However, they both ended up taking an introductory class for interior design at college and never looked back. Nest Interiors is a full service interior design studio specializing in residential design on all levels from new construction, consulting and finish selections, furnishings and remodeling. They are a team of talented designers and professional women who offer a full service design experience from start to finish. “Our goal is to always have our client’s home tell their story,” says Kat. “ Nest Interiors is known for creating spaces with an eclectic mix that are not only stylish but also approachable and livable. “We want people to use and enjoy the spaces we create while interjecting a little Nest twist to any design,” says Katy. “We start by sending clients a design questionnaire asking them questions about their family, what kind of places they like to travel, and where they like to shop, for example. We review inspiration and what the main goals are in each space in terms of function and design. We like to try to jump inside their brains and understand how they live before creating spaces for them. From there, we take a team approach to each project which gives multiple eyes on each project and an overall collaborative design experience between our team and our clients.” They believe that the client should stick with what they truly love. “Trends change quickly so if you design a space that feels uniquely you, it will never be out of style.”

Kara Kersten has been dreaming about design since she was 6 years old, but those dreams originally began with dreams of being an architect. Once she was introduced to the Interior Architecture and Product Design program at Kansas State University, she fell in love with the more artistic and colorful side of the architecture department which led her to interior design. Kara Kersten Designs takes clients all the way from the planning stages of remodeling to new construction projects to move-in ready, furnished and styled spaces that feel like them and function for their family. They are involved throughout the entire process and handle everything so that the homeowner doesn’t have to. They also offer compact consultations for clients who don’t require full services. Kersten knows that even a good design choice isn't right for everyone. They like to notice the nuances of their client’s personality and tastes, listen closely to their ideas, and care deeply about who they are and how they want to live in their home. This empathetic approach gives each client an amazing project experience and lets Kersten’s team create highly personalized designs that resonate with them on a deep level. Kara Kersten Design is known for bridging the gap between interior design and construction - transforming outdated and dysfunctional whole home layouts as well as guiding clients through the entire construction process; which includes speaking fluent 'contractor.’ Kersten says that the earlier that a designer can be involved, the better. “Trust your gut on picking someone that feels right to you, and then once you do, lean into their process and guidance.”

Nestled into one of Kansas City’s coziest corridors is Bacaro Primo; Crestwood’s American-Italian counterpart to Earl’s Premier - both gastronomic brainchildren from founders Todd Schulte and Cory Dannehl who have a clear affinity for what a quaint and satiating dining experience should look like in KC!
The name is both a nod to a classic Italian wine bar (“Bacaro”) as well as an extension of Earl’s Premier (“Primo”) and if delectable Italian food and beverage is your thing, then cin cin (cheers!) to your new favorite neighborhood destination that will have you coming back time and time again.
Bacaro Primo’s lunch and dinner menus are absolutely dynamite: From their incredible culinary creations like their crowd-favorite pizzas, plates of pasta, and the salumi bar to their top-notch hospitality, it’s the level of details that distinctly complete your experience. Plus, the ambiance captures your heart from the moment you walk up to the charming Crestwood entrance to the minute you sit down either saddled up at the bar or settled into the dining room floor.
FROM THEIR INCREDIBLE culinary CREATIONS LIKE THEIR CROWD-FAVORITE PIZZAS, PLATES OF PASTA, AND THE SALUMI BAR TO THEIR TOP-NOTCH HOSPITALITY, IT’S THE LEVEL OF details THAT DISTINCTLY COMPLETE YOUR EXPERIENCE.
The exposed brick, warm lighting, and rustic decor are accompanied by a bar lined with beautiful Italian wines and spirits. The U-shaped bar gives glimpses into not only the making of arguably some of the best Negronis in town but also the magic of where the salumi begins and the nightcaps end.
Bacaro Primo’s seasonally-rotating menu offers quintessential Italian favorites starting with a selection of Cicchetti, i.e. snacks to whet your appetite, including the most dynamite Olive Fritte that is a must, i.e. green olives stuffed with garlic, wrapped in Italian sausage, and deep fried in breading until they are golden brown. Another favored shareable is the cured meat and cheese boards serving 1-4 people and offering salumi selections like Prosciutto di Parma and Capocollo and cheeses ranging from varying Italian regions.
For lunch, you’ll find many of the dinner favorites in addition to sandwiches like Egg Salad Crostini and the Panini of the day. For dinner, there’s simply no better way to approach it than to bring a group and order a plethora of plates to share. There are simply too many delicious options to pass up, including beautiful pizza creations like the Cavelo Nero with ricotta and pistachio and the classic Margherita with Mozzarella di Bufalo and Basil.
The hearth-baked focaccia is an antipasti favorite pairing well with arancini, a seasonal salad, and house-cured prosciutto. And as you navigate your way through the subsequent courses including pasta and risotto, pesce and carne, and contorni (sides), you’ll find the array of flavor profiles span appetizingly rich, like Ragu Bolognese and braised wild boar ragu to creamy with Scampi all Primo and polenta.
Lest we forget the sweetest ending of all; dolce! Opt for a classic Limoncello Cake or Affogatto Primo followed by an espresso for the final conversations of your night out. All in all, the Bacaro Primo dining experience truly is not only remarkable but one of a distinct nature. It will have you feeling an escape from Kansas City and a landing into a charming atmosphere inspired by international and urban-American elements combined. Cin cin!

LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED FOR 70 YEARS
“We have been Kansas City’s family-owned furniture store for 70 years, and it’s because we have high-quality products and a high level of service.
For over a century, Bassett Home Furnishings has been bringing the country's finest furniture materials under one roof while helping families build a space they love and that they want to share with their friends and family. Katie Crowley's grandparents opened Kansas City’s first Crowley Furniture & Mattress store in 1954 and say the customization Bassett brings to the table is unmatched. The family opened a standalone Bassett store in 2017 in Overland Park, but the Crowley family has carried Bassett products inside their KC furniture stores for over 50 years.
"We have been Kansas City's family-owned furniture store for 70 years, and it’s because we have high-quality products and a high level of service," explained Crowley, “That’s a very unique characteristic that we bring to the Basset store because not only do we have the backing of the manufacturer, but our customers are being serviced by someone locally.”
Customers turn to Bassett when it comes to building their dream furniture. Their wide-selection of materials gives clients access to a variety of premium fabrics, leather, wood finishings, and other high quality materials that are crafted and designed to fit into any home. Customers are also treated to Bassett design consultants who are trained to walk customers through the customization process or to assist if they need help fine-tuning their vision or the style of furniture. Whether it’s a modern look or a transitional style, each design consultant helps customers create a product that meets their needs.
Crowley says the finished customized product brings a valuable investment to homes because it ensures their customers are happy with every piece, and most importantly it creates one-of-a-kind moments that tell a family's unique story.
“You don’t just buy a dining table to have somewhere to sit on. Certain pieces of furniture will be in your family's home for years and will be remembered because of all the memories that happened around that one dining table. Furniture has a lot of sentimental value to people because it is associated with all those memories,” said Crowley.
While some families have an idea of what they want, others turn to Bassett for inspiration on larger projects. The store also features an outside designer program that gives KC interior designers the opportunity to bring their clients inside their space. The goal is to have each client see Bassett products first hand, get their designer’s suggestions, and work hand-inhand with Bassett design consultants throughout the entire furniture purchasing process. This month, Kara Kersten Designs will be featured inside Bassett.
"We wanted to show just what Bassett custom products can do, so when meeting with Kara, it just made sense because she listens and understands what the client needs and makes sure their products fit in their space just the way they envision it,” said Crowley. “This showcase with Kara shows the possibilities of our custom line and how it can fit the needs and styles of different people.”
For families looking to change their living space, but who already have their dream furniture, Crowley advises to play with patterns and textures, especially with spring and summer months ahead.
“Accents help bring out colors, even if you're in a neutral palette, it helps to bring in some of those blues or greens that kind of give a little bit of a lift,” said Crowley. “Don't be afraid of patterns. If you don’t want to commit, add accent pillows because texture can also bring out a space.”

Bringing the outdoors in with the use of house plants is a great way to add color and dimension to your space. We sat down with Jesse Nelson at Family Tree Nursery and discussed the benefits of incorporating plant life into your home.“There are plenty of studies on the health benefits of plants, and the evidence suggests that being around plants and caring for plant life increases overall wellness,” explains Nelson. “Anytime you bring a plant
into a home or work environment, it’s going to make you feel better. It is going to beautify the space in a way that art cannot, and they also have the added benefit of purifying the air.” There are a wide variety of indoor plants that work for any space and light situation that you may have. Regardless if you have a green thumb or a black thumb, there are plant varieties that fit your lifestyle. Here are a few of our favorite indoor plants to incorporate into your home.
Anthurium has gorgeous, colorful flowers and is the easiest indoor flowering plant to care for. It comes in a variety of colors including red, white, orange and purple. Anthurium likes to be dry, so let it go bone dry before watering. Fertilize every so often, especially when blooming. These plants do not like direct sunlight and can be repotted every three to five years.
This plant goes by many names such as Snake Plant and Mother-in-Law’s Tongue and is one of the most popular indoor plants. The Snake Plant is for anyone from a green thumb to a black thumb because anyone can grow it. These hardy plants can adapt to any environment and can live in both high light and low light. Snake Plants are great for countertops and tabletops because they grow tall, not wide. They are great bedside plants because they help purify the air as they go through photosynthesis at night. They only need to be watered about once a month. These plants can also be outdoor plants and can acclimate during the summer months. Be sure to spray the plants three to five times before bringing them back indoors to get rid of any bugs that could have made the plant their home.
This is a slow-growing variety that is architectural and compact. This plant is a great statement piece and looks great in an entryway or by a chair. There are a lot of varieties and colors of the Dracaena. They are very resilient in low light and are great for an office space with little or no light. They like to stay on the dry side, so they like to be watered when they are about ½ to ¾ of the way dry. When watering, give it a good soak. Protip: A moisture meter can be purchased and used to determine how dry your plant is to help determine when it is time to water again.
1. ANTHURIUM: 2. SNAKE PLANT:The ZZ plant, which its formal name is Zamioculas Zamiifolia, is a very easy plant to care for. They like anything from low light to bright light. These plants are hard to kill and can go a long time without being watered. Their bulbs hold a lot of moisture, so they only need to be watered once a month. This is a great plant to give as a gift due to its ease of care and versatility. They are slow-growing and are great for counters and tabletops. There are new varieties coming out such as Lucky which has round leaves and Raven which is black.
This cascading plant is gaining popularity due to its succulent-like leaves and also because it is fairly easy to care for. The Hope Peperomia likes medium to bright direct sunlight. It does well as a tabletop plant or a hanging plant. Watering is only needed one time a month regardless of plant size.
The Calathea Ornata has a ton of varieties and is a very artistic plant. This one is a little finicky and temperamental, so it can take a little bit of a green thumb to care for them. Faucet water can be hard on these plants, so they prefer distilled water. If brown tips appear, this means it is being over-watered or the water is hard. They like medium to bright indirect light. They can grow to 1 ½ feet to 2 feet maximum.
This plant comes in many varieties, but the lickety split is known as the most pleasing. They can get to be between four to six feet and grow both tall and wide. These houseplants need lots of space to grow. They like to stay about half dry and can be a little forgiving if they go a little dryer than they like. This plant likes medium to bright light and can acclimate to an outdoor plant during warmer months.
•
•
The Ficus Ruby is in the Rubber Tree family and can come in a variety of colors. These plants like either direct light or bright indirect light. These can grow three to four trunks in a pot and can take on the appearance of a bush. They grow six to eight inches a year. This plant can go dry so watering about once a month is sufficient.
When choosing an indoor plant, call your local professionals or go to a local garden center to get the best information. They are happy to help you decide what plant works best in your space and with your plant-abilities.
