Intentional Steps: Reflect, Dream, and Plan for a Meaningful Year

The start of a new year is a gift—an open expanse of time filled with potential, fresh starts, and opportunities. January, often seen as the month that drags on, actually offers a rare chance to pause and embrace the slower pace. Instead of rushing toward the next milestone, let’s savor this moment to reflect, dream, and plan. Take time to revisit the past year—celebrate your wins and learn from your challenges. Use this season to create a vision board or set meaningful goals for yourself and your family. It’s the perfect time to reset and embrace the possibilities ahead.
Early January holds special meaning for me, as it marks our wedding anniversary—a time for both celebration and introspection. It’s an opportunity to look back on the past year of our marriage, while also dreaming about the future, all while savoring the joy and significance of the present moment.
In this issue of Lakewood City Lifestyle, we focus on offering solutions that create sustainable, lasting changes. Whether it’s your health, home, finances, or relationships, real progress is made through the habits you nurture most of the time, not just occasional decisions. We’re excited to share stories about local businesses that inspire you to look and feel your best—from dental offices to nutrition specialists to a local hair salon. We hope this issue brings you clarity on the next steps in achieving your goals. There is a multitude of aspects to health and wellness, and we’re covering many of them this month. In addition, be sure to check out our events page for local runs and our Business Monthly column for the latest fitness products to help you on your journey.
Here’s to making the most of this year, one intentional step at a time. We’re cheering you on!

A Healthy Glow
ZENA Aesthetics & Wellness offers a wide spectrum of services to help you look and feel your best
After conducting clinical research at Boston Children's Hospital and then attending medical school at Harvard, Dr. Dylan Cahill realized that his interest in medicine extended beyond the traditional clinical setting. Around the same time, he connected with Dr. Harvey Chin and Guan-Lun Liao and together they discovered an opportunity to partner with Dr. Inda Mowett in the aesthetics and wellness industry. Building on Dr. Mowett’s 25 years of experience and her solid local reputation in the field, the team collaborated and rebranded The Aesthetic & Wellness Center to become ZENA Aesthetics & Wellness.
“Dr. Mowett continues as our medical director and core provider offering the aesthetics and wellness services that our clients have come to love and expect over the years,” shared Dr. Cahill. “Now our team is helping grow the business on all fronts, especially developing the wellness piece because it really goes hand in hand with aesthetics. People who look their best want to feel great, and people who are feeling great also want to look great.” Alongside Dr. Mowett, the core team includes assistant manager and personal fitness instructor, Deanna Castro, and medical aesthetician, Petra Pennington.
On the aesthetics front, ZENA Aesthetics & Wellness specializes in Botox, injectables, customized facials, dermaplaning, microneedling, and HydraFacials. Working in consultation with Dr. Mowett and the center’s trained and certified staff, clients develop personalized therapy plans to meet their skin care goals.
The core of the center’s wellness services is its medically supervised weight loss program. Dr. Mowett, who was the first physician in Manatee County to earn her certification in non-surgical weight loss by The American Board of Obesity Medicine, continues to oversee the program. The program utilizes a variety of techniques for weight loss, including the InBody 580 Body Composition Analyzer to document progress and reveal trends on where the weight loss is occurring. These modalities used in conjunction with the in-office gym and personal fitness instruction provide clients with great results.

Looking ahead, Dr. Cahill is excited about expanding the skincare and wellness programs to include hormone replacement and IV therapies under the guidance of Dr. Jack Li, MD, PhD, recognized for his dual expertise in dermatology and medical artificial intelligence, and Dr. Pamela Smith, MD, an internationally known expert in hormone therapy and longevity medicine, both with over 30 years of clinical experience.

Over the last year, Dr. Cahill has found that he truly enjoys the aesthetics and wellness aspects of medicine, and it is a great fit for him and his partners. “I have found it quite fulfilling to see clients become the best versions of themselves, feel their best, and look their best, engendering confidence and promoting their wellbeing through various non-surgical cosmetic procedures, as well as through our weight loss programs, to support them in their health goals.”
ZENA Aesthetics & Wellness is located at 5219 E State Road 64 in Bradenton. For more information and to schedule a consultation or session, visit www.zenamedspa.com or call 941-749-0741. Also follow the center @zenamedspa on Instagram.

20 MINUTES
to Fitness
A Revolutionary Approach to Health

ARTICLE BY BROOKE BEZET | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICOLE MAC PHOTOGRAPHY
20 Minutes to Fitness is redefining how people approach physical wellness with its unique, medically based workout method. With locations in Missouri and Florida, including Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch, this fitness center offers a personalized, science-backed regimen that requires just one 20-minute session per week to deliver impressive health benefits.
The foundation of 20 Minutes to Fitness lies in its use of slow-paced strength training on specialized high-end equipment. By working muscles to the point of controlled fatigue, the workout stimulates muscle growth, increases bone density, and improves overall strength and flexibility. With a certified coach by your side during every session, clients receive tailored support, ensuring proper form and safe, effective training. This approach is ideal for individuals of all fitness levels, from teens to seniors, and in some cases it is recommended by orthopedic surgeons for pre-surgery strengthening.
For avid golfers, the “20 Minutes to Par” program offers tailored workouts to improve performance on the course. This specialized regimen strengthens obliques, back, and leg muscles, while improving flexibility and range of motion for a powerful, consistent golf swing. The program also helps prevent injuries, reduce back pain, and build stamina, ensuring players feel as strong on the 18th hole as they do on the first.

Owner Virginia Phillips, who doubted the benefits of slow-cadence training after years of intense workouts, says she became a believer after seeing results in her own body. "I noticed real changes in my strength and overall health. I realized I didn’t need to spend hours in a traditional gym to feel strong and fit," Phillips shared.
20 Minutes to Fitness is celebrating 20 years in the Lakewood Ranch area. Clients have appreciated the one-on-one attention, lack of membership fees, no contracts, and flexibility of packages that never expire. Visit www.20minutestofitness.com or call 941.309.8989 to get started today!

REFRESH & Rejuvenate
From booking the session to the moment guests exit after a massage, the entire experience at Squeeze Massage focuses on creating a personalized, relaxing, and seamless massage experience.
Squeeze Massage offers 50 and 80 minute massages with therapists who are trained in a variety of healing modalities including Swedish, deep tissue, Reiki, neuro-muscular, and trigger point therapy massages. Guests direct their experience beginning with booking appointments online or through an app. With extended hours and same day appointments, Squeeze can accommodate guests with a wide range of availability.

Online therapist introductions that include special areas of expertise and customer reviews allow guests to choose the therapist that most aligns with their needs. During the booking process, guests also complete a survey to select preferences, ensuring the session is customized to their needs and wants. Details collected include choice of music from six curated musical playlists, type of lighting, preferred pressure firmness of the massage, and specific areas of the body to avoid and/or focus on during the massage. Additional enhancing services such as aromatherapy, heat, percussion, and deep tissue therapy are included in the session cost.
“Before you arrive, your therapist is going to know what your preferences are, so when you come in, you're greeted by our maître d and we take you immediately to the lounge area to start relaxing,” explained Sloane Bellante, owner of Squeeze Massage. “Then when your therapist comes to get you, there is no paperwork involved because it's already done prior to the appointment and at your leisure.”
Guests also control the start of the session using a button located on each massage table, which when pressed, lets the therapist know that the guest is ready to begin. This helps alleviate anxiety over a therapist entering the room before the guest is prepared or leaving the guest guessing how long they must wait for the massage to begin.
At the conclusion of the session, therapists treat guests to a private and contact-free checkout process so as to not disrupt the calm and relaxing afterglow of the massage. It’s a feeling Sloane says they want to make sure guests continue to enjoy long after they leave. “It's such a Zen environment,” she shared. “The world is full of heavy emotions and stress, so making someone's day a little bit brighter because they feel lighter from having their massage and being the better part of someone's day is really fulfilling.”

Q & AImportance of Dental Cleanings

Q: WHY ARE REGULAR DENTAL CLEANINGS IMPORTANT FOR ORAL AND OVERALL HEALTH?
A: Regular cleanings remove plaque and tartar, preventing cavities, gum disease, and conditions like periodontitis. They also allow early detection of issues like oral cancer, improve breath, and enhance smile appearance. Cleanings contribute to systemic health by reducing risks linked to poor oral hygiene, such as heart disease and diabetes.
Dr. Rose Le of Rose Dental shares dental cleaning insights
ARTICLE BY BROOKE BEZET | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROSE DENTAL

Q: WHAT ARE COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT DENTAL CLEANINGS?
A: Many believe cleanings are painful or unnecessary if teeth feel fine. However, modern techniques minimize discomfort, and plaque can cause issues without symptoms. Some think brushing and flossing suffice, but professional cleanings remove hardened tartar and spot early problems.
Q: HOW OFTEN SHOULD DENTAL CLEANINGS BE SCHEDULED?
A: Most people benefit from cleanings every six months. Those with gum disease or high-risk conditions may need more frequent visits, while those with excellent
oral health might extend intervals based on their dentist's advice.
Q: CAN SKIPPING CLEANINGS IMPACT GENERAL HEALTH?
A: Yes, plaque buildup can lead to gum disease and allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream, increasing risks of heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory issues.
Q: WHAT CAN PATIENTS EXPECT DURING A CLEANING AT ROSE DENTAL?
A: Rose Dental offers thorough cleanings using the Cavitron 300 system for a comfortable experience. Their skilled hygienists ensure personalized care in a welcoming environment.
“Our experienced doctors and hygienists take the time to educate patients, using cutting-edge digital technology, including the latest oral scanners.”

By Dr. Catherine O’Connell
People want to build strength for all kinds of reasons. Dr. Catherine O’Connell, for example, says she wanted to be able to lift Fuzzy, her 18-pound Maine Coon cat.
But that’s not the only reason she wants to be in good shape. Dr. O’Connell, 68, is a family practitioner in Sarasota. In addition to seeing patients five days a week, she is an avid hiker and cyclist. Staying fit and strong are key to her ability to maintain this active lifestyle.
That lifestyle, however, was threatened several years ago when Dr. O’Connell tore her rotator cuff while working out at the gym. Soon the doctor found herself sidelined and on the receiving end of fitness advice.
Several of her patients, in fact, offered her the same suggestion: try 20 Minutes to Fitness, where she could safely build strength and maintain her fitness with just ONE, 20-minute workout a week.
Among her patients advocating for 20 Minutes to Fitness was an 84-year-old tennis player with arthritis who had gotten stronger AND lost eight pounds while training there. As Dr. O’Connell watched that patient spring off her examination table, she decided to give it a try.
A WORKOUT TAILORED TO HER NEEDS
Dr. O’Connell arranged for a free consultation and introductory workout at 20 Minutes to Fitness’ studio in Downtown Sarasota. There, she met a nationally certified fitness coach who introduced her to slow-cadence training, a safe, medically based exercise method that involves lifting weights using ultra-slow movements on specialized MedX equipment. Originally designed for use in physical therapy, the equipment is calibrated to work specific muscle groups without putting undue stress on joints or ligaments – making it a safe choice for all ages.
Dr. O’Connell’s coach tailored a workout to her fitness level, taking into account the limitations created by her rotator cuff injury, as well as her desire to address some body imbalances she was experiencing.

Per her request, Dr. O’Connell’s full-body workout included special focus on her hamstrings and glutes to improve her gait. Her upper and lower back muscles were targeted to help improve her posture, while her neck and shoulder exercises were designed to address her rotator cuff issues.
Throughout the entire session, her coach remained attentively at her side, checking her posture and technique and providing continuous encouragement. Twenty minutes later, she had progressed through a series of six or seven machines and systematically exhausted each of her major muscle groups.
She went home feeling fatigued, but delighted, and ready for the muscle fibers she had just worked to rebuild and strengthen. A week later, she returned for another session.
Dr. O’Connell is today a regular at 20 Minutes to Fitness and is again pursuing the hiking and cycling adventures she enjoys. Strength-wise, she also notices some differences in her day-to-day life. For example, she no longer needs help carrying the two 40-pound bags of salt she buys for her water purifying system. In fact, she lifts them from the trunk of her car and carries one in each hand before emptying them into the system.
Even her patients have noticed. And so has Fuzzy.
20 Minutes to Fitness: it works for Dr. O’Connell. It may work for you, too. To find out, schedule your first free session today.

ALIGNED SRQ

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO WELLNESS
ARTICLE BY BROOKE BEZET | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICOLE MAC PHOTOGRAPHY

At Aligned SRQ, patient care is more than a practice; it’s a purpose. Founded by Dr. Daniel Kirschner, a chiropractor with nearly three decades of experience and a wellness coach with a diverse background in natural healing, the clinic embodies a mission to provide personalized, patient-centered care. This vision took root two years ago when the founders discovered their shared passion for addressing health issues at their core and restoring balance from the inside out.
"Our hearts were aligned in this mission," says Dr. Daniel Kirschner. "God brought us together for a purpose much bigger than either of us imagined."
The clinic's co-founder, Sarah Nichole, brings expertise as a Wellness and Detox Coach, Hyperbaric Oxygen Technician, Electrologist, and Medical Aesthetician. Her journey into natural healing was inspired by her own health challenges, including battling chronic Lyme disease and mold toxicity. This experience fuels her desire to offer the support and solutions she once struggled to find.
Aligned SRQ’s foundation lies in the principle of customized care. By combining years of chiropractic expertise with Sarah’s holistic approach, they’ve created a multi-faceted wellness center that integrates modern and natural therapies to achieve lasting results.
INNOVATIVE THERAPIES FOR REGENERATIVE HEALTH
One of the most popular tools at Aligned SRQ is Softwave Therapy (ESWT), a cutting-edge regenerative medicine technique that stimulates stem cell activity through shockwaves. This non-invasive therapy promotes cellular regeneration, helping patients heal on a deeper level. It’s complemented by other advanced treatments like:
• PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Frequencies): Helps improve circulation and cellular function.
• LLLT (Low-Level Laser Therapy): Also known as biophotomodulation, it enhances tissue repair and reduces inflammation.
• HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy): Delivers concentrated oxygen to the body to accelerate healing and detoxification.
These technologies, combined with hands-on chiropractic care, allow Aligned SRQ to offer comprehensive solutions for complex health issues.
A FOCUS ON CELLULAR DETOXIFICATION
Aligned SRQ’s signature service, the Cellular Detoxification Consult, provides a deep dive into patients’ health histories and symptoms. This consult identifies the root causes of inflammation and dysfunction, paving the way for customized healing protocols.
The Core Cellular Detox Program unfolds in three steps:
often experience improved energy levels, balanced hormones, and relief from chronic fatigue.
TRANSFORMING LIVES, ONE PATIENT AT A TIME
The team at Aligned SRQ takes pride in making a tangible impact on their patients’ lives. “We receive messages every day from people who say we’ve helped them in ways they never thought possible,” shares Sarah.
Women struggling with hormone imbalances and infertility have found hope at Aligned SRQ, as have patients dealing with fatigue and immune system dysfunction. By combining natural remedies, hands-on diagnostics, and advanced testing when necessary, the clinic delivers real answers for challenging health problems that conventional medicine often overlooks.
“Every patient is unique, so their treatment plan should be too,”
— Dr. Daniel Kirschner
1. Preparation: Opening natural detox pathways.
2. Toxin Removal: Targeting toxins in organs and body systems.
3. Brain Detox: Eliminating heavy metals and toxins that affect neurological health. By addressing cellular health at its foundation, the program delivers rapid, transformative results. Patients
A PATIENT-CENTERED PHILOSOPHY
The clinic also offers the expertise of a skilled massage therapist, further enhancing the patient experience. “We’re here to fully support our patients on their health journey,” says Dr. Daniel Kirschner. “We don’t just treat symptoms; we find the root cause and help the body heal itself.”
A VISION FOR HOLISTIC HEALTH
As Sarah puts it, "I wanted to give people the care I never received when I was struggling with illness. Now, we have a place where people can come to heal and truly feel cared for.”
Aligned SRQ isn’t just a clinic; it’s a sanctuary for healing, where every patient’s journey toward wellness is treated with the care, expertise, and compassion it deserves.

Eat Local,
ARTICLE BY KRISTI FINIGAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY PETER ACKER PHOTOGRAPHY
Sarasota-Manatee Originals: A Culinary Community Built to Last Celebrate Sarasota’s culinary heritage with awardwinning wines and the artistry of local restaurants.
Drink Global
In the heart of Florida’s Gulf Coast, Sarasota-Manatee Originals stands as a testament to the power of community and collaboration. Founded just over 20 years ago, this collective of over 65 independently owned restaurants has worked tirelessly to preserve and promote the unique flavors and culinary traditions of the Suncoast. From Anna Maria Island to Venice, these establishments define the character of their neighborhoods and invite diners to experience the Gulf coastal lifestyle through extraordinary cuisine and warm hospitality. More than a collection of restaurants, the Originals are a movement—a united force supporting small businesses, fostering resilience, and ensuring the vitality of locally-owned eateries in a landscape often dominated by chains. Their mantra, “Eat Like a Local,” inspires residents and visitors alike to savor the distinct tastes of the region while strengthening the community they call home.

WEATHERING THE STORM TOGETHER
This past year, the Originals’ mission was more critical than ever. Following three devastating storms, the Sarasota-Manatee Originals faced unprecedented challenges. Many of their beloved Member Restaurants suffered significant damage, lost revenue, and endured immense uncertainty amid an already challenging seasonal economy. Despite these hardships, and true to their name, the Originals chose resilience and forged opportunities for recovery.
As they continue to rebuild, these Originals Member Restaurants remain dedicated to making Sarasota-Manatee a world-class culinary destination. Their strength serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting local businesses. Every meal shared, every gathering hosted, and every toast raised strengthens the bonds that define our community.
SARASOTA'S INDEPENDENT RESTAURANTS: A TALE OF RESILIENCE
Necessity, the mother of innovation, has always been the driving force behind the Sarasota-Manatee restaurant scene. As the new millennium
dawned, Sarasota, once a sleepy "Circus City," was experiencing a renaissance. The discovery of its rich cultural sophistication and natural beauty, particularly by The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, catapulted the area into the spotlight. The ensuing land boom and downtown resurgence brought with it increased competition from big-brand chains.
Michael Klauber, owner of Sarasota’s Michaels on East restaurant since 1987, recalls, "We realized that Sarasota was changing, and we were starting to see the big guys coming in. None of us had the budgets to battle these highly subsidized corporations." Klauber discovered that dozens of other local restaurateurs were lying awake at night with similar worries. D’Arcy Arpke, co-owner of Longboat Key’s Euphemia Haye restaurant, helped to “circle the wagons,” encouraging other independently-owned restaurateurs to join forces and work cooperatively to develop and launch a neighborhood initiative called the “Sarasota-Manatee Originals.” By banding together, these 24 independent restaurant owners and chefs transformed potential competition into camaraderie. And in 2003, they became pioneers, creating Florida's first chapter of a group dedicated to supporting local, independent restaurants.

FORKS & CORKS: CAPTURING THE SPIRIT OF THE SUNCOAST
Sarasota-Manatee Originals kicks off 2025 with their 18th Annual Forks & Corks Food and Wine Festival, a five-day culinary extravaganza celebrating the Suncoast. This premier event provides a stage to showcase the culinary talents of independent restaurants in Sarasota and Manatee counties. Its legacy is highlighting local talent, fostering global connections, and celebrating a community united by collaboration.
From January 23-27, Forks & Corks will feature over 24 events, including intimate winemaker dinners, educational wine seminars, an exciting online auction, and the highly anticipated Grand Tasting at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. Whether you’re a seasoned foodie or just starting to explore the world of wine, Forks & Corks is designed to offer something for everyone. Sip and savor medal-winning wines from around the globe, sample creations from the Originals’ restaurants, and meet the culinary and winemaking visionaries behind every bite and pour.
MORE THAN AN EVENT
Forks & Corks isn’t just about indulgence—it’s about impact. As the Sarasota-Manatee Originals’ primary fundraiser, the event supports year-round marketing initiatives that help local restaurants stand out in a competitive market. These efforts ensure that the region remains a dining destination, drawing visitors from across the country while enriching the lives of residents.

EMBRACE A FRESH NEW YEAR WITH US
After the challenges of 2024, Forks & Corks feels like more than just an annual tradition—it’s a fresh start. It’s a chance to gather, celebrate, and look forward to brighter days. It’s a reminder of what makes the Suncoast special: its people, its flavors, and its unshakable sense of community.
While tickets for the 2025 Forks & Corks Grand Tasting went on sale in November, and while they typically sell out fast, there are still plenty of ways to experience Forks & Corks. Whether you’re attending a winemaker dinner, exploring new varietals at a retail tasting, or savoring every sip at a wine seminar, this is one event you won’t want to miss.

HEALTHY Hair Tips FROM MODISH SALON
Maintaining healthy, luscious locks is all about adopting the right habits and using quality products. Haley Haxton from Modish Salon shares three simple yet effective tips to transform your hair care routine.
1. SHAMPOO TWICE
Did you know that double shampooing is essential? The first wash removes dirt and grime, while the second provides a deep cleanse. Haley recommends the Kérastase Chronologiste Bain Régénérant Shampoo, available at Modish, to revitalize and nourish your hair.
2. ADD OIL TO YOUR ROUTINE
Oiling is crucial for keeping your ends hydrated and soft—whether you have extensions or not. Haley’s go-to is the Kérastase Elixir Ultime L'Huile Originale , a luxurious oil that adds moisture and shine.
3. BRUSH THE RIGHT WAY
Prevent breakage by brushing your hair from the ends upward. For best results, use the Dom Dom Wetbrush, perfect for detangling without damage.
