Summer Down by the Lake

$400s - $700s $400s - $700s
Whether you’re jumping in the car for a family road trip or enjoying a staycation at home, summertime offers the opportunity to slow down and enjoy life around you. The kids are out of school, the temperatures become steamy, and escapades seem to await.
There is a certain buzz surrounding the arrival of summer that makes me antsy to be on the lake and enjoy the sunshine. As much as I love the beauty of spring, summer allows me to gather with my family and loved ones and explore the lakeside banks minutes away from the beautiful communities of Little Elm, Aubrey, Oak Point, Lakewood Village, Crossroads and Krugerville.
The pages of the Summer Fun issue will help you make the most of the summer season in Lakeside. Even though summer doesn’t mean three-month long breaks and spending all day at the pool anymore, renting a pontoon at Cottonwood Creek Marina is the perfect way to relax and spend quality time with family and friends.
Or how about embarking on that road trip to a bucket list destination in transportation that best fits your needs? After 100 years in North Texas, Huffines Automotive Group can help find that updated family vehicle or perfect convertible to hit the open highway.
I know I plan on being by the shore as my kids wear themselves out with water activities and taking advantage of the cool lake in the Texas heat. And who wouldn’t want to see Fourth of July Fireworks reflecting on the waters?
Just like the languid, easy nature of summer has a way of bringing people together, we hope that you find inspiration to explore our beautiful community with those closest to you. No matter what adventures are in store this summer, take a look in your backyard to see what Lakeside has to offer.
Get out and enjoy it! But remember to wear your sunscreen - it undoubtedly will be a scorcher.

Family-owned Cottonwood Creek Marina celebrated its 20-year anniversary.
HOW A FAMILY BUSINESS BLOSSOMED INTO CREATING LAKESIDE FUN
“
"My family started this marina with a simple vision: to create a welcoming community."
Nestled along the picturesque shores of expansive Lake Lewisville, Little Elm’s, Cottonwood Creek Marina stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of family, community, and the simple joys found in nature. For over two decades, this hidden gem has been owned and operated by the Miller family, offering a haven where families can escape the hustle and bustle of modern life and reconnect with what truly matters.
Ryan Miller, the son of the original owner, Ben Miller, is a man deeply rooted in the traditions of the marina. With a warm smile and a genuine passion for hospitality, Ryan carries on the legacy established by his parents, who founded Cottonwood Creek Marina over 20 years ago. To him, the marina is not just a business; it's a cherished part of his family's history, a place where memories are made and friendships flourish.
"My family started this marina with a simple vision: to create a welcoming community where people could come together to enjoy the beauty of Lake Lewisville," Miller reflected with pride. "Over the years, that vision has only grown stronger."
Indeed, Cottonwood Creek Marina has flourished under the Millers’ stewardship. Currently boasting of 375 covered wet slips with plans for an additional 190 approved slips in the near future, the marina has become a beloved destination for boat owners seeking a close-knit community and unparalleled amenities.
Beyond the numbers and the beautifully maintained infrastructure, lies the heart and soul of Cottonwood Creek Marina: its vibrant community of boat owners. Here, friendships are forged over shared sunsets
and weekend adventures on the water. Whether it's a spontaneous fishing trip or an impromptu picnic in one of the coves, there's always a sense of camaraderie among the marina's residents.
“Boating offers something for everyone,” Miller said. “You don’t have to be a boat owner to get out there and give your family a memorable day out on the water.”
With eight boats available for rent and a knowledgeable staff to provide a detailed orientation, anyone can be captain for a day. Each boat will fit up to 10 passengers, which is more than enough room for one or more families to stow a cooler full of snacks and beverages and have room to spread out and soak in the fun.
More than just neighbors, long-time boat owners and residents of Cottonwood Creek Marina take pride in their vessels and are often found visiting the marina just to wash, polish and spend time being on the water. There's always someone willing to lend a helping hand or share a laugh, and that's what makes this place truly special.
In addition to its close community, Cottonwood Creek Marina also offers a host of amenities designed to enhance the boating experience. From fuel docks and boat rentals to a fully stocked marina store, every need is catered to with care and attention to detail.
But perhaps one of the marina's most beloved features is its commitment to entertainment and family-friendly activities. On special occasions throughout the year, the shores of Cottonwood Creek come

alive with the sounds of laughter and music, as residents and visitors alike gather to enjoy performances by local artists and bands. The Blessing of the Boats, which is held in June, is one of the marina's most wellattended events.
Of course, amidst all the excitement and camaraderie, the true essence of Cottonwood Creek Marina remains unchanged: a place where families can come together to disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with each other. Whether it's a quiet day of fishing with the kids, a leisurely cruise along the lake, or a lively evening of music and entertainment, the memories made at Cottonwood Creek Marina are bound to last a lifetime.
As the sun sets over the tranquil waters of Lake Lewisville, casting a warm glow upon the marina's bustling docks, Ryan Miller looks out with pride and gratitude. For him, Cottonwood Creek Marina is more than just a business; it's a legacy, a testament to the enduring power of family, community, and the simple joys found in nature.
Next time you find yourself yearning for a break from the chaos of everyday life, heed the call of Cottonwood Creek Marina in Little Elm. Leave your worries behind, embrace the beauty of nature, and rediscover the joy of community amidst the serenity of Lake Lewisville. After all, some of life's greatest treasures are found in the moments we share with the ones we love.

HOW HUMBLE BEGINNINGS 100 YEARS AGO LEAD HUFFINES AUTO GROUP TO BECOMING ONE OF THE TOP DEALERSHIPS IN NORTH TEXAS
Everyone has a humble beginning when becoming a small business owner. Those moments of struggle, trial and error, and working with new people are what drives a business owner. Like many entrepreneurs, some people go into business only thinking about the
known for its fairness and integrity to succeed during the most suppressing times, even accepting livestock and farm implements in exchange for vehicles during the 1930s.
Following his father’s footsteps, J. L. Huffines Jr. expanded the family
now and not so much the future. They often think about how they can stand out from others in this instant instead of laying a strong business foundation.
Chances are, they may not even realize that constant adaptation through time is what sparks a legacy. For Ray Huffines, the general manager of Huffines Auto Group, dedicating time to fostering relationships with the community while staying current with the trends has allowed Huffines to grow for 100 years.
“I grew up working in the family business watching and learning from my father and grandfather. This is what I always wanted to do and I’m so grateful and honored that I have had the opportunity to carry on the legacy,” he said.
It all started in Denton, Texas, in 1924 when Ray's grandfather, J. L. Huffines Sr., first opened Huffines Motor Company’s doors. The economic crisis caused by the Great Depression did not discourage or change Huffines Motor Company’s commitment to customer service. The dealership was always
business across North Texas. He not only carried the reputation of stellar customer service with him, but eventually created a new one, which was community involvement. To this very day, Huffines Motor Company, now Huffines Auto Group, is headed by third- and fourth-generation leaders Ray Huffines and his son, Sam Huffines. As reputation precedes their legacy, the dealership is one of the largest leading motor companies in North Texas.
“Over the years, we have had the opportunity to grow and expand with multiple franchises in multiple cities, which has resulted in expanding our team members to over 900 today," Ray Huffines said. "I am so proud of our team members who carry out our core values to serve our customers. The continuity of our team members of whom many have partnered with us for decades gives me great satisfaction."

To celebrate 100 years, Huffines has launched a community campaign that involves its iconic “Huffines HAS IT!” jingle. For every performance sung by residents, the company will donate $100 to local charities.
“We owe much of our success over the past 100 years to the overwhelming loyalty of our communities. Their support has been, and continues to be, instrumental to the success of Huffines,” Ray proudly said.
It's nice to know that some things never change in our community. If there is one thing you can count on when it comes to Huffines Auto Group, it's giving back. Since the very beginning of its operation, community involvement and commitment have always been one of its missions. offers a wide range of automotive brands, including Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Kia, and Hyundai. All of these would be perfect for any family planning a summer vacation or road trip. Why not trust a third and fourth-generation of North Texas' leading car dealership?
"WE WILL REMAIN DEDICATED TO CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT."
“My son, Sam, began selling luxury vehicles in Houston right after graduating from college. He has learned far more than I had at his age, and with the transition ahead, the future looks extremely bright for Huffines,” Ray said.
The name speaks for itself. Huffines Auto Group is dedicated to helping customers create memories this summer in the vehicle that best suits their lifestyle. Trust the commitment. Trust the service. Trust the dedication. More importantly, trust the legacy and its excellence.
Clients looking for a new car can stop by Huffines any time and a team member will be eager to help find the right vehicle for any summer journey.
“We will remain dedicated to continuous improvement," Ray promised. "As for how I want to be remembered, I would say that none of my accomplishments would have been possible without God’s blessings.”

Ramon Alcala, the owner of Ramon’s Hair Design, approaches life with the philosophy that the best way to understand something is to experience it personally. In both the professional and personal aspects of his life, he likes to immerse himself in what he’s doing, study it, and decide on the most effective approach.
Alcala sees his career as a hobby and takes his hobby, specifically fishing, as seriously as his career.
The roots of Alcala’s love of fishing can be traced back to his family’s farm, where he spent time as a kid fishing in the family’s pond. The hobby stayed with him, and his fishing locations and expertise have grown over the years. With that experience, Alcala has found parallels between doing hair and fishing, making the two intricately intertwined for him.
“I’ve been doing hair for 45 years and I really enjoy it,,” he shared. “I spend a lot of time listening to my clients helping them solve their problems and showing them how to care for their hair.
“I’m kind of a nerd in that I like to study things and go one step further than most. Fishing is the same way. I study the water and the fish to know what they're looking for and what I'm doing wrong, too, so that I can be successful in catching fish.”
Alcala integrates his love for electronics with fishing by using underwater mapping technology on his boat to locate great fishing spots at Grapevine Lake in North Texas. He's able to study the patterns in which the fish move and understands how to entice them to take his bait.
Although he enjoys fishing for largemouth bass, Alcala truly loves the challenge of finding and snagging smallmouth bass.
“I get excited about catching fish, how they feel when you get them on the line, putting them back in the water, and doing it again and again,” he said. “Smallmouth bass are more of a challenge to find and are different characters in the water. They are big time fighters on the line, unlike the largemouths that mainly go docile when hooked. Smallmouths just keep fighting and fighting, trying to get away, and that’s exciting to me.”
In addition to catching fish, Alcala enjoys these moments to unwind and enjoy the outdoors. The simplicity and solitude of being on the water allows Alcala to reflect on the past and look toward the future.
“I often think about my clients and what I could do better for them. I replay my whole day or my whole week and see what I can do better the next time they come in; if I can do something else for them to teach them something or if there is something that I might have forgotten to tell them,” he explained.
“I’m really a quiet guy and I do a lot of talking with my clients throughout the day, so fishing gives me time to be quiet, peaceful, and think.”

16 ounces Bokek Dead Sea Salt 20 drops lavender essential oil
In a mixing bowl, add drops of the essential oil to the bath salt and mix well; store in a glass jar. Add 1/3 to 1/2 cup of the scented salts to a bath for a relaxing experience. SeaSalt.com
Yield: 1 pound
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs
1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight.
2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent.
3. To cut by hand, lightly fold sheets one at a time into thirds and cut to desired thickness. Recipe from MarthaStewart.com
1/2 cup heavy cream
8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 cup cocoa powder, for dusting
1. Bring the cream to just a simmer in a saucepan over low heat. Pour the cream over the chocolate in a bowl and let stand about 10 minutes to melt the chocolate. Add the vanilla, stir until smooth and set aside to cool for 1 hour at room temperature.
2. Beat chocolate at medium speed until thick and light-colored. Spread over the bottom of a baking dish, smooth and refrigerate 2 hours until firm.
3. Pour cocoa powder onto a deep plate or shallow bowl, and using a melon baller or small ice cream scoop, scoop out balls of chocolate. Roll in cocoa powder until coated and transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Recipe from FoodNetwork.com
Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our nine tips for transforming and elevating your closet. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying these guidelines will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.
It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.
Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. A large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.
Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.
Hidden storage is a game changer in keeping a closet visually clean. Tuck folded clothes behind closed cabinet doors if the space is multipurpose. The floor-toceiling built-ins in Keri’s closet contain folded clothes, athleisure and other items she needs as she gets ready each day. Tuck away the least-used items: Use hidden storage and the very top of the closet for out-of-season items and stuff only worn a few times a year.
Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.
