ACCELERATED STYLING

My dog, Zilla, did a nice job stepping in to write my Publisher's Letter in last month’s Kids and Pets issue, but it was time for me to retake the reins this month. As we bask in the last golden days of summer on the water, in the backyard, and at local parks, we’re excited to bring you our September Style Issue — an edition that’s as much about substance as it is about style.
When we think of style, we think not just of fashion, but of identity, intention, and evolution. Style is how we show up in the world — and sometimes, how we rediscover ourselves in it. From a wardrobe that speaks to your truest self, to the walls of your home that deserve to be just as alive as your fashion sense, this issue is a celebration of expressing who we are, whether it is on our bodies, in our homes, or within our Lake Minnetonka community and all that it offers.
In this issue, we are proud to feature members of our community and businesses that support everything that is Style and can help you find yours in many ways. We look at the latest in fashion for ladies and men, highlight designs that feel like home, and showcase the timeless elegance of Simon glass. We learn how self-care is always in style and how you can elevate your outdoor spaces. To top it all off, Jen shares something about a little style change of her own.
Here's to a fall full of color and sun-filled days and still warm waters for as long as we can have them. See you around the Lake! DAVE

Dear Susan: Since we’re talking Style this month, what’s your ‘Stiles Investing Style’for a smart-looking portfolio?
That’s an awesome question! When we look at investing, we think of GARP (Growth at a Reasonable Price). This is an investment strategy that blends elements of both growth and value investing. GARP investors seek companies with strong growth potential but that are also trading at reasonable valuation multiples, such as price-to-earnings (P/E) or PEG (price/earnings to growth) ratios. The goal is to avoid overpaying for highgrowth stocks while still benefiting from their upward trajectory. This approach aims to balance risk and reward by identifying undervalued growth stocks that are likely to outperform over the long term. I love this topic, so please snap the QR code for my video and a deeper discussion on investment styles for you.

Union Place blends highstyle interiors with smart tech integration for homes that work as beautifully as they look
ARTICLE BY KENDRA JOHNSON
PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY JOHN PHOTOGRAPHY
Have you ever walked into a room and wished you could style your home in a similar way? Maybe it’s the furniture that pairs so well with the wall colors, or the decor that perfectly accents the rest of the space. The good news is that interior design is very intentional, and Union Place is the best in the game at collaborating with clients to deliver on those seamless styles.
A family-owned and boutique-style interior design firm located in Excelsior, Union Place, offers interior design services and home technology systems.
The combination of tech and design gives Union Place a unique position in the interior design market. But it’s really the team’s commitment to collaboration and excellence that sets them apart.
“One of my philosophies is that I don’t have a ‘look.’ If you hire me to help you with your home, it’s really gonna look like it belongs to you and what you think is for you. My ideas help you make better decisions than you would on your own. I work collaboratively that way,” says Maud Duggan, co-owner of Union Place.
Within the interior design space, Union Place is a one-stop shop for all your ideas. The team has helped homeowners style single rooms or entire homes. They’ve also helped with the design of commercial properties. But it’s not just entire spaces they design.
Union Place’s workroom allows the team to design and make new pieces for clients, on top of having access to over 300 vendor lines. The workroom’s artisans and craftsmen “create and fabricate everything from window treatments to custom-built home furnishings.”
So even if you have a small piece of furniture that needs reupholstering, Union Place has the tools to do it.
The design process works hand-in-hand with the home systems installations as well.
Managed by co-owner Brian Duggan, they strive to deliver amazing design-minded technology experiences consisting mainly of home theaters, smart home automation, audio and video, and security and surveillance. You may be wondering how interior design plays into the technology add-ons, but there are so many options regarding placement, visibility, and style.
“Sometimes people think it’s a very odd combination for a company to have both of these types of avenues for projects, until they need both. And then, depending on the scope, Brian and I will have meetings with both of us,” Maud says.
Maud says things they consider when installing home systems include how motorized shades will be operated, whether speakers will be hidden behind wallpaper, and if televisions will have frames so as not to distract from the design of the room.
So how do you determine what the best style and technology needs are for your space? Giving Maud a call and setting up an initial intake consultation is the best first step. Even if you don’t have a concrete vision for your space, Maud can help with ideas of her own.
“Thinking of the architecture of the house, how the family uses the furniture, if they have children, and dogs. Sometimes we’re working with people who have issues with mobility accessibility,” Maud says. “There are those parameters that are important for me to keep in mind. Then I look around and I put together a look that I think I’d be really happy with and see what they think.”
And if you’re still unsure and want inspiration before getting in touch with Union Place, there are some interior design trends growing in popularity right now.
Maud says color palettes are moving away from grays and whites towards more moody tones such as reds, greens, blues, and plums. She has also noticed a “more is more” mentality when it comes to designs, such as repeating bold patterns.
A lot of wall finishes, upholstery, paneling, and wallpaper are coming into style, as well as curvier or organic furniture styling. Overall, Maud has noticed interior design trends moving away from a minimalist approach.
Whether trending or not, your home should reflect your style and your needs. All things Union Place is perfectly equipped to help you with.

Our experts break down the pieces everyone should have in their closet this season
Skinny jeans? Wide leg? Golf-style fabrics vs tailored tees? We go straight to the fashion experts at Amore & Fede and J.H. & Sons to learn about the latest looks for both the ladies and the guys, and the must-have pieces for this season.
Let’s start with the ladies. Debbie Slusar, owner of Amore & Fede boutique, and her daughter, Brittany, say wide-leg jeans win out when it comes to current trends and are a must-have piece this season. “All the ladies need to own a pair of high-waist wide-leg jeans, pants, and trousers. These styles are so easy to pair with a fitted tee or tank, crop sweater or top, and or oversized shirt jacket and blazers. We all should own at least one of these,” says Debbie.
But if you’re still hanging on to your skinny jeans, you’re not alone. “Some of our customers still wear them, and we think that is great and encourage you to wear what makes you feel good!”
The “coastal cool” look is also trending. “Think breezy and effortlessly cool when it comes to getting dressed,” says Brittany. “Oversized shirt jackets are very popular. One of our favorites is from ZSupply, which continues to sell out every time! Another on-trend style is the monochrome look. It simplifies styling while making a bold statement.”
Brown and earthy tones will also dominate the rest of 2025, and as for accessories, mini bags are it. “We have the perfect woven mini bag in many colors that pairs well with any outfit!”
Gen Z & younger millennials are also making an impact on current trends. “They’re definitely making fashion more casual and less buttoned up,” says Debbie. “Most of them wear active wear as their main go-to outfits, of which I would prefer to see less of! Animal prints, oversized tops and sweaters, and casual or relaxed jeans are also trends you’ll see them wearing this fall. It is possible that they will bring back low rise, but we shall see.”
Even though you’ll see these trends on the younger generation, these are styles any age can adopt. Debbie says the biggest fashion rule made to broken is: you should always dress your age.
“Yes, there are some items I wouldn’t wear at my age, but there are so many styles I can wear as well as the young ladies. For example, the same romper was sold to a 37-year-old and then to a 66-yearold! I often hear women say, ‘I am too old to wear that!’ When I tell them my age and that I wear it, they then consider it and feel more comfortable purchasing the item. We always say wear what makes YOU feel good and comfortable, no matter the trend. The greatest way to make yourself look good is by feeling good in what you wear. Truly, that is what we try to do at Amore & Fede!”
So, ladies, if you’re going to add one piece to your wardrobe this season, it should be a high-waisted wide-leg pant. Pro tip: Amore & Fede carries the Liverpool brand, which makes great pant styles in very soft fabrics.
For the guys, Kevin Luedke at J.H. & Sons says the biggest trend he’s seeing for 2025 starts with perfecting an elevated casual look. “Perfecting an elevated casual look means getting away from technical “golf style” fabrics and moving into garments with
a more tailored approach. This year’s must-have item is a tailored over-shirt/shirt jacket. This piece, when crafted from a fabric typically used for a sport coat, provides our clients a layer without having to reach for a sport coat, bringing a wide range of versatility to their wardrobe.”
Tailored clothing is back in style and the top priority for the team at J.H. & Sons. “We are always encouraging our clients to move beyond the idea of ‘being overdressed’ and that bringing a tailored element to their casual Friday night dinners is more than appropriate. There is nothing wrong with being the bestdressed guy in the room.”
Kevin is also seeing the impact on this season’s styles from the younger generation. “It’s a return to the essentials. Making sure they have a great, softly constructed, navy blazer with a rotation of white and blue shirts. A well-tailored pair of mid-wash denim or dress trousers and a low-profile brown loafer. Quality over quantity is the name of the game right now. We’re spending more time with our clients finding the perfect pieces within the store and through made-to-measure for their daily wardrobe and special events, making their selections more personalized and unique to their preferences,” shares Kevin.
The best part about this year’s trends is that you don’t need to overhaul your entire closet to fit in this season’s style. “We work tirelessly to bring our clients the best that menswear has to offer and find ways to incorporate new concepts into their wardrobe with their personal preferences in mind,” says Kevin. “I am most personally excited about replacing my sneakers with casual, dress loafers!”
This season is all about elevating your casual look. Remember, gents, there’s nothing wrong with being the bestdressed guy in the room!

Five Swans boutique in downtown Wayzata is adding the timeless style of Simon Pearce glassware to their collection. Head buyer, Jeni Wojahn, shed some light on what makes these pieces so special and how you can bring them into your home.
Valued for their legacy of artisan design and the finest materials, Simon Pearce started his namesake brand at the age of 16, utilizing Georgian glassmaking techniques from centuries ago. However, these are the kinds of designs that never go out of style. “The simple elegance and practicality of the pieces are a perfect fit for our store,” says Jeni.
Discover the artisanal craftsmanship and enduring beauty of Simon Pearce glassware now at Five Swans
Five Swans has been a staple in the community for decades, and adding in Simon Pearce with its own storied legacy of style and sophistication made sense. “We have been wishing for access to Simon Pearce for many, many years, and we are so grateful that they have allowed us to sell their beautiful products,” says Jeni. “For years, we have had customers asking if we carry Simon, and we are thrilled to be able to say we do!”
Now that customers know they can get these pieces at their favorite local home goods store, they may be wondering, ‘Which pieces are available?’ “We have access to the full line. We currently have several styles of the barware, drinkware, bowls, vases, hurricanes, sailboats, and most notably the infamous glass-blown evergreen trees. If you have a piece in mind that we don’t currently have in stock we are happy to order what you are looking for,” shares Jeni. Additionally, this collection will be the perfect fit for all kinds of registries and wish lists and Five Swans will be on tap to help. “We hope that our brides will be able to find many pieces that will provide them with years of beauty and functionality in their homes,” says Jeni. “There is even a bowl named the ‘celebration bowl’ that can be engraved with names or wedding dates!”
For those new to the world of Simon Pearce and interested in learning about what differentiates these products from others, there are key differences. “The unique imprint at the bottom of each piece is called the pontil mark; an impression of where the
hot iron once held the piece during its creation,” explains Jeni. “Other companies grind/file this indent off, and Simon keeps it as a signature marking of the handmade process. All pieces are made start to finish in the United States, in Vermont.” Additionally, Simon Pearce uses lead-free materials in all their crystal glassware and custom molds that add to the uniqueness of each piece.
Besides educating customers on what makes Simon Pearce stand apart, they are here to help style and offer advice on which pieces are most popular. “Some of our favorite pieces are the Echo Lake collection. Swirls of glass are wrapped around the pieces to resemble the water near the mill where each piece is made,” says Jeni. “The evergreen trees are a favorite because they come in so many styles and sizes. Many people will add to their collection with one special tree every year.”
These beautiful pieces, meant to last for generations, are made with only the finest materials and showcase classic craftsmanship, making them the perfect gift for all kinds of celebrations and additions to your own special collections at home. “Any Simon Pearce pieces can be bought in store at Five Swans, or ordered over the phone,” says Jeni. “We are absolutely happy to help style and give suggestions on pairing items together!”

When my daughter was born, there were a lot of comments directed at my husband, like, “Oh wow, a girl. That will be expensive. Get ready for a lot of drama. Now you are outnumbered!” Dumb comments, as we have learned, all children are expensive in their own
special ways, all provide unnecessary drama, and this household isn’t helped one bit by balancing by gender. It’s five people and a dog who ALL want their own way. If anyone has a simple remedy for this, please let me know.
And while we couldn’t anticipate anything past the present moment of marveling at our tiny little squish of a daughter, my husband did make the joke, “I hope when
she gets to high school, all our high school styles come back and they wear the giant baggy sweaters and parachute pants.” He/we/she did not get this lucky. By the time she was in high school, low-rise yoga pants with crop tops were the rage. New fabrics had been invented, infusing spandex into everything. And our ’80s hairstyles of big perms and bigger bangs did not come back either. It was all long, sleek, middle-part hair. Sometimes, when I sat in the high school parking lot watching the girl gangs walk out, I was convinced human cloning was real.
Personally, I never had the ’80s perm with the frothy puff ball of bangs in the front. My husband did (his mother executing the frequent home permanents) and I thought it was spectacular. That is a story arc to explore on a different day. My high school yearbook makes me giddy, looking at the many girls and boys who barely fit their hair into the frame of
the photo. I look relatively normal? It was like I had a premonition that backlit backcombed bangs suspended by Aqua Net would eventually not be a thing. I had no such premonition, but I never had the perm for two reasons. I have naturally very curly hair, so I didn’t “need” a perm, and I was a dancer and wore my hair in a tight bun six days a week. Bangs, like homework, were a high school inconvenience I found intolerable.
I’ve never been one to mess too much with nature. I figure if my hair is curly, I should just let it do its thing. Plus, I have a fantastic stylist who knows how to cut curls. Curly girls out there know what I mean. We have all had the moment when a stylist takes a step back from the ringlets and eeks out a long sigh as they ponder what to do. That is never a good sign. So a few days ago, I decided I wanted a change. Nothing major. No buying a sports car or moving to a yurt. Just a
little pick-me-up. If you are looking for a way to bring unintended joy to someone, tell your hairstylist you want to do something completely different. They live for these days.
I got bangs. I know. I surprised myself. There are many jokes about getting regrettable bangs after a breakup. This was not that. Just a little change, plus four inches off the bottom. Tiny small bangs but big impact.
It’s a little bit of a ’70s cut, and I’m loving all of that vibe. Once again, my hairstyle is not trending. I’m not in style per usual. But the cut does suit me. That’s what I’m trying to bring back. Not fitting in but doing what makes sense. If you run into me, feel free to compliment my glorious bangs. But you probably won’t recognize me. My new hair makes me look at least two months younger. My next appointment is already in the books.
I’m someone new and cool who requires a “bang trim”.

The experts at MarineMax share what every boater needs to know for cold-weather prep and how they can help winterize your boat
ARTICLE BY LAUREN BEAUBAIRE
“Your boat is a valuable investment, and we get that. Knowing how to winterize a boat is one thing, but performing all the necessary tasks is an entirely different scenario.”
We Minnesotans know that when September hits, the countdown begins on how many more days we can enjoy getting out on the water without a layer of long underwear and a parka. But before the winter weather creeps in, you’ll want to make sure your boat is also ready to face the cold. We sat down with the experts at MarineMax Excelsior on how to protect and winterize your boat so that, come spring, you can avoid major headaches and ensure you’re ready to hit the water as soon as the ice melts.
MarineMax is the world’s largest lifestyle retailer of recreational boats and yachts, offering a complete range of
services, expertise, and support to help you fully embrace the boating life. “We’re a community of boating experts and enthusiasts dedicated to supporting you at every stage of your journey,” says Kayla Harper, Regional Marketing Manager at MarineMax. “We offer everything from financing and insurance solutions, exclusive events and educational programs to boating technology solutions and service and maintenance.” And that also includes getting your boat ready for winter.
“Your boat is a valuable investment, and we get that,” says Kayla. “Knowing how to winterize a boat is one thing, but

The first task before tucking your boat in for the winter? An oil change. “Getting an oil change now is an important maintenance task to include before winterizing your boat,” advises Kayla. “Old oil can cause issues such as engine corrosion and increased wear. Over time, used oil can accumulate contaminants that, if left in the engine during storage, may lead to internal damage. Fresh oil helps to protect engine components and ensure a smooth start to the next boating season.”
performing all the necessary tasks is an entirely different scenario. We have the right people and the right tools to get the job done: factory-trained expert certified technicians, fully licensed and insured facilities, stateof-the-art equipment and methodologies, genuine OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts, and we’re backed by a nationwide network.”
To ensure your boat is ready to go for the next boating season, Kayla recommends scheduling maintenance, repairs, or upgrades now. “By addressing these needs at the end of the season, you avoid missing out on valuable time on the water when warmer weather returns.”
Water’s great in the summer, but it definitely isn’t your boat’s best friend when winter rolls around. Water expands when it freezes, which can cause cracks, corrosion, mold, and damage to vital components such as the engine, hoses, battery, and wiring. MarineMax’s winterization services prevent all of these issues and also help catch any other problems that might be exacerbated by not addressing them before the cold weather hits.
Along with winterizing your boat, proper storage is a crucial factor in keeping your vessel in good shape. “We also offer Boat Yard Storage,” says Kayla. “In our boat yard, your boat will remain safe and secure and is easily accessible. We shrink wrap every boat to protect it from all of the crazy Minnesota elements!”
“On the other side of winter, our Spring Recommissioning services can help ensure your boat is ready for the summer months. Our team handles everything from engine checks to detailing, offering the very best repair, restoration, and maintenance services. We make it a hassle-free experience so your boat will be in top condition and you can focus on enjoying the water.”
While boating season is winding down, Kayla shares that now is the prime time to check out new boat models. “The end of the
year is an excellent time to explore new boat models as dealerships begin to phase out older models to make way for the latest releases. Whether you’re interested in upgrading or customizing a new boat, now’s the perfect time to start the process.”
With days on the water getting shorter, now is the time to make sure your boat gets some TLC before winter arrives, so you can enjoy smooth sailing next season. Check out marinemax.com to learn more about their winterization services and schedule your appointment.
In today’s world, it’s important to take a few minutes every now and then to prioritize self-care. For some, that means reading a book or going for a walk, but for others, self-care is more about finding ways to feel good in your own skin. Bella on the Bay’s Missi Davis has some tips and must-have products for diving deeper into hair and skincare to feel your best.
The first and most critical rule is understanding that everyone’s hair and skin is different. If you find yourself comparing your style to friends or even family, it’s important to remember that your hair and skin may require different needs than someone else’s. Bella on the Bay, a full-service salon and spa in Excelsior, offers complimentary consultations for this exact reason.
“We do complimentary consultations for clients all the time because, with so much out there on the internet, it’s important to just make sure that you are on the right path and that you are doing the right things for your specific hair or skin,” Missi noted.
With that in mind, though, there are hair and skincare products that can be incorporated into a low-maintenance routine or for special self-care days. These tips and products are also great for anyone looking to start coloring their hair.
ARTICLE BY KENDRA JOHNSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNA KO PHOTOGRAPHY
Specifically, Missi says the best low-maintenance products are the ones that serve multiple purposes, so you’re not spending hours on your hair.
Missi says the products you should be looking for are, of course, staples like shampoo and conditioner, but also “having a treatment spray, like a leave-in, does multiple things where you can control frizz and is a heat protectant and helps to strengthen your hair.”
The same is true for skincare. Finding multi-purpose products like an exfoliating cleanser and a moisturizer with an SPF in it will help lessen the number of products and time it takes to do your self-care routines. Missi specifically recommends a charcoal exfoliating gel for male clients. “It’s really great for oily or even normal skin types, and it smells really good.”
If you’re hoping for name drops on specific products, Missi has you covered. The salon carries hair care lines like Kérastase to meet the needs of every hair type for men and women. They also have products like Chroma Absolu for frizz control, detangler, and UV protection.
For your skincare needs, Missi recommends Eminence, the salon’s primary skincare line. For exfoliating cleansers, Bella on the Bay carries a couple different fantastic brands, with Monoi being one of the best corrective cleansers.
Outside of your hair and skincare routines, Missi is seeing some style trends that could give you inspiration for your next self-care day in the salon. Lash lifts and tints, hair extensions, and blonding are some of the most popular trends right now.
Whether you’re looking for low-maintenance hair and skin care products, advice about your specific care needs, or a selfcare splurge day, Missi and the Bella on the Bay team can help develop your style to ensure you feel your best.
