Woofs of Wisdom from Zilla

Hi, my name is Zilla. That’s short for Godzilla. I was a rescued dog from Secondhand Hounds a couple of years ago. I’m an import from Alabama, where I was found. Dave and his wife decided to foster me until I found my forever home, but I had Dave wrapped around my paw in about two days, so I got to stay. They didn’t want another dog because they already had two: Shelby and Winnie. They are okay, but unimportant in this context because Dave asked me to write his letter this month. Why wouldn’t he? I’ve established myself as the Alpha in the household. The older one, Shelby, is chill but generally avoids me. And Winne… well, I have her pretty much terrified. I haven’t been bad, really, just growled at her a few times. Honestly, she’s a bit anxious. Anyway, he asked me to write this. My first thought was, what’s in it for me? He promised me some extra treats. I’m food-motivated, so I’ll give it a whirl.

This issue is all about kids, families, and pets. I prefer pet articles because we are, after all, the best. Even the feline variety can be pretty cool. I respect them. Kids can talk back, and families sometimes struggle to agree on what to do on a given day. On the other hand, we are consistent. Ready to play whenever you’re in the mood. We dig walks and digging in general if you need a hole. Give us a couple of square meals a day and a few treats, and we give you “unconditional” love.

Lots to offer in this issue: Take your family out on the water by renting a boat from Bay to Bay, or enjoy the scenery on Paradise Charter and leave the driving up to them while you sip on your favorite beverage. Check out Apple Jack Orchards for a fun-filled family day. Westonka Animal Hospital gives tips for keeping your pet healthy. Top Dog offers high-end training as well as doggy daycare and a boarding vacation to love. I personally can attest to that one. Spa vacations are the best! Super Coaches is a new business matching mentors with your kids, whether it’s academic or athletic. Finally, Lakes Area Realty shares things to look for in a family-friendly home. Hey, and that includes pet-friendly as well.

Also, ….. Oh no, someone is walking Cooper from down the street. That Golden Retriever always gets earlier walks than I do. That can’t be tolerated … Bye…. Woof, Woof, Woof, Woof, Grrrr Woof

Harvesting Fun for the Whole Family

ARTICLE BY KENDRA JOHNSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAVVYPHOTAGE
How Apple Jack Orchards cracked the code on all-ages fun

As a parent, it’s not often you find an event or attraction that appeals to both you and your children. And it’s even less likely if you have children of varying ages and abilities that you’ll find a place where they can all have fun, but Apple Jack Orchards has cracked the code.

Located in Delano, Apple Jack Orchards is a family-owned apple orchard that has grown into so much more. The Mithun family bought the orchard nearly 15 years ago, and mother-daughter duo Mary and Maddie Mithun have continued to build on the traditions and family fun that “Apple” Jack Kelly started in 1983.

Today, the orchard spans 90 acres and 10,000 apple trees with anywhere between 17 to 19 varieties of apples. And while the apples are still the star of the show, Apple Jack Orchards is a hub for family-friendly entertainment, too.

Between August and November, the orchard is host to hay rides, cow train rides, a corn pit, and a corn maze.

“This year, the corn maze theme will be ‘America the Beautiful,’ so you can kind of travel around America, and we’ll have different items within the maze to go visit based on the geography within the country,” Maddie says.

CONTINUED >

“The largest and newest addition to the orchard is a 250-footlong mega slide. The slide has really added a lot of fun and entertainment for kids.”

As far as animals go, Apple Jack Orchards does have goats that kids can feed and pet — and may soon add chickens — but the orchard also partners with local farms to bring animals such as alpacas and ponies to add to the fun. These weekends are great for first-time pony rides for your young ones!

This year, the orchard is set to open a toy and candy store as well that will appeal to anyone with a sweet tooth or a love of John Deere tractors.

The orchard also features apple cannons, a bubble barn, sandboxes, jumping pillows, sports games, ropes courses, and paintball guns — especially appealing to younger boys and their dads.

But the largest and newest addition to the orchard is a 250-foot-long mega slide. The slide is big enough to be seen from the road and features three lanes. The slide has “really added a lot of fun and entertainment for kids. They just keep kinda constantly circling. So that was an awesome addition last year in regards to kids’ attractions,” says Maddie.

And don’t forget that Apple Jack Orchards is plenty fun for adults as well. The market section has hard cider and beer, along with a plethora of food and bakery options. The orchard’s seasoned and diligent staff work year-round, perfecting their bakery items.

The orchard is also leaning into sunflower season and offering the opportunity for visitors to cut flowers and take photos in the fields.

And when the fall season is said and done, the fun doesn’t stop at Apple Jack Orchards. In early May, the orchard opens its doors to teach children about apple tree pollination.

Once the tree blossoms pop, boxes of bees are delivered to help pollinate the blossoms. “It’s really, really fun to walk down the rows of apple trees and see the blossoms that have bees on them. You can hear the buzzing, and you can smell the blossoms. It’s just kind of a fun science class,” says Mary.

The orchard team is actively trying to broaden the educational opportunities by inviting kids to experience and learn about spring pollination, followed up by the fall apple harvest. Keep an eye on the orchard’s Instagram @applejackorchards or call to see what opportunities are available for your curious kids.

When it comes to the orchard’s success, Mary and Maddie say it all comes down to the team — some who have been there from the start. “It’s really fun to see what all of these people can do when they put their heads together to create such an incredible family entertainment opportunity.”

So whether you’re going apple picking, testing out the mega slide, or buying a delicious apple crisp, your trip to Apple Jack Orchards is bound to be fun for the whole family.

A Paw Above the Rest

“Top Dog Country Club stands out because we provide excellence in every service offered.”

Located in Carver County, Top Dog Country Club was founded 25 years ago, creating the first-ever vacation club for dogs and forever changing an industry. Built on the idea of extending top-tier hospitality to both dogs and their owners, Top Dog’s ‘club med’ style vacation ensures your pets receive the best of the best, helping you rest easy when you travel, knowing your best friend is in the best of hands and enjoying their own five-star all-inclusive vacation with a heated swimming pool, “Yappy Hour” with fresh-baked biscuits, bedtime stories, and so much more.

“Top Dog Country Club stands out because we provide excellence in every service offered. We take a custom approach to our care for each dog,” says Jean Stelten Beuning, owner of Top Dog Country Club. “We have the staffing levels (one staff for every 8-12 dogs), and an all-adult staff to offer what no other facility can. Dogs not only enjoy 5-6 hours of adult-supervised group play daily, but they also receive 5-6 hours of social training as we work with them, actively teaching them good social skills. We provide dog owners peace of mind when they travel, knowing their dogs are safe, happy, and having the vacation of their lives.”

Top Dog is once again offering professional training services alongside their doggy daycare, boarding, transportation, and spa services. Top Dog has received international recognition, but the best praise for their training program is from pet owners and their dogs. “A well-trained dog is happier and more confident, which leads to happy owners,” says Jean. “Training helps the dog to learn what is expected and teaches the owner to provide consistent expectations, leading to a happy home.”

Top Dog’s professional trainer, Kayla, has over 15 years of hands-on experience working in dog training. “The approach is a customized plan, clear

communication, patience, and positive reinforcement in building lasting relationships,” says Jean. It’s the customized approach that helps Top Dog stay above.

The professional training programs offered are unique to each pet owner and their situation, and include:

• Stay, Play, & Train (Daycare and Training): Combines daycare and training in one.

• Board and Train (Overnight Boarding and Training): A Top Dog Vacation while addressing behavioral needs. A tailored training plan builds strong foundational obedience, addressing behavioral concerns.

• In-Home Assessment & Training: Addressing your dog’s needs within your home. Behavior is observed to identify specific challenges and goals.

• Puppy Training & Socialization: A foundational program focusing on teaching puppies essential skills that will help them grow into a well-behaved adult dog.

• “Pack Walks” in Public Places: A fun and structured way for dogs to learn the fundamentals of obedience while also building important social skills.

• Troubleshooting/Behavior Modification Training: A customized plan to address a wide range of behavioral issues that can interfere with your dog’s quality of life and your relationship with them.

• E-Collar Training: A humane and effective way to reinforce recall and address behavioral issues—responding consistently to commands, and providing a safe/ controlled way to improve recall and safety.

There is a wide range of opinions on when a child is a child no longer. Some say eighteen years old. Some think twenty-one. Minnesota has selected twenty-six for insurance purposes. But I’ve watched mothers in their eighties with sons in their sixties fussing over

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT

if they are getting enough to eat and enough rest. So it’s hard to say when full adulthood sets in.

My eldest just moved out for real this past spring. She is an adult on paper but yet still not adult enough to rent a car. Who makes up these crazy rules? She was ready and had prepared for a very long time and I wasn’t ready and had prepared for a very long time. She didn’t move far away.

Life Minded

She can support herself. She has a job and is in graduate school and knows more about how her car works than I ever hope to know.

And I thought I was perfectly fine until I passed her empty room a week after the move. It looked like the scene in the original Grinch cartoon of the Who house after he steals everything. Everything was stripped bare. Just a few random thumbtacks on the wall and an old blue stain on the carpeting from the wax melter. Dings in the wall I hadn’t noticed. A curtain rod left behind. In the closet, the detritus of childhood. Things that don’t hold any special meaning for her but are the record of everything for me. Our dog walks in there three times a day and looks at me like, “Where IS she?”   Cue the sobbing. I did recover in a few days after seeing her new place and making up her new bed. And it helped that she has come home many times. Came home for our standard Sunday night Chinese takeout. Came to see her brother’s lacrosse game. Came over to get her favorite

Minded

sweatshirt she left in the laundry room. She came home, and we walked the dog, and she even cleaned my vacuum cleaner one day because I don’t know how to take it apart. My mom gave her five extra avocados she had, and my daughter reacted as if it were a bag of gemstones. Her appreciation for everything has grown already.

Being a young adult in this era is hard. Harder than it was for my generation I think. Maybe everyone romanticizes their own era. The world is different now and their expectations as young adults are much different. But they are walking the tightrope of adult responsibility just the same. And while I miss her and the past and her exuberant energy and being privy to everything, adult children are pretty amazing.  She texts me more now. Asks for photos of her dog. I send them. We have tried to Facetime with the dog. He is having none of it. He wants the real deal or nothing.

One of my favorite recent text messages from her was along the lines of “Uh…couches are really expensive.”

The actual message contained a wellplaced and strong expletive, but you get the gist. And it’s true, couches are expensive. And avocados. And everything.

There is no protecting them from adult life. We eventually all have to take our turn waiting at the DMV. But getting the messages from adult children that being an adult is not always fun feels like an exciting, weird rite of passage for both of us.

So, I guess they are grown up when they feel done growing up. And anyone who is delighted over a free avocado is definitely an adult. I talk to my own mother nearly every day. She knows things that I don’t know yet, and it reminds me how very far my own children have to go in figuring it all out.

So, my advice to any and every family is no matter how your relationship is with your children before they leave the nest, get a dog. A cute irresistible dog. The dog will keep you company when they go. But more importantly, the kids will come home to see the dog. Because they will miss the dog most of all.

Lakes Area Realty’s Chris Dennis shares how to find the perfect family-friendly home

THE HOWS AND WHYS OF FINDING A

FAMILY-FRIENDLY HOME

When seeking a home for a growing family, there are some basics that most are looking for. Buyers care about the school district, access to parks and trails, and often having multiple bedrooms on the same floor.

For Chris Dennis, the managing Broker for Lakes Area Realty Excelsior, however, just as important as finding a house that matches a family’s specifications is finding a house that matches the ‘whys’ that prompted those specifications in the first place.

“The ‘why’ allows us to walk through the house with their eyes,” says Chris.

An example Chris gave, underscoring the importance of the ‘why’, is a family wanting a dining room in their new home. If the reason behind wanting a dining room is to host Thanksgiving every year for both sides of the family, many smaller dining rooms won’t work for that buyer.

The ‘why’ gets to the heart of what the buyer actually needs in a home.

“Whats and whys help us sift through MLS (Multiple Listing Service) data to get a picture of the house this family is going to need,” says Chris.

When working with new buyers, Chris makes a habit of sitting down with them to fully explore the underlying whys that are the drivers of what a home needs to be. Those whys are as varied as the buyers themselves, ranging

from backyards large enough for a garden to spaces for hosting to a husband wanting two sinks in the primary bathroom… because his wife squeezes the toothpaste weird (that last one is a real example, by the way).

But beyond the buyer’s whys, what makes a home family-friendly? The question can be deceptively difficult to answer. Due to Fair Housing Laws, realtors are not allowed to market homes as family-friendly, which often forces buyers to “read between the lines” on listings, says Chris.

The staples of school districts and parks are obvious, but other amenities, such as a bedroom and bathroom on the lower floor for nannies or au pairs, or indoor sports courts, are great amenities for families.

CONTINUED >

Here in the land of hockey, having a multi-purpose indoor court that can be equipped with artificial ice for year-round practice can be a game-changer. Chris is quick to point out that after the kids move out, those spaces make great golfing simulators, too.

“FOR

FOUR-LEGGED FAMILY MEMBERS,

RAISED WASHBASINS OR DEDICATED DOG-WASHING AREAS CAN MAKE KEEPING DIRT AND GRIME OUTSIDE THE HOME ALL THE EASIER.”

For four-legged family members, raised washbasins or dedicated dog-washing areas can make keeping dirt and grime outside the home all the easier.

While some neighborhoods can be strict about the type, color, and look of fences, advances in invisible fence technology enable GPS tracking that keeps Fido on the lawn without needing to bury wire or install a physical fence.

Once a family finds a home that fits their specifications and their whys, the focus then shifts to the neighborhood. To better understand the feel of the neighborhood, Chris offers simple advice: drive by the house on three different days at three different times.

Many buyers take a pass through the neighborhood and assume that’s all they can do to learn about the area. Seeing the area across different days and times, however, allows for a better grasp of the “energy of the place,” explains Chris.

For example, if a buyer tours the neighborhood at 1pm on a Wednesday, the kids are at school, the parents are at work, and “nobody is going to be around,” Chris says. The feel of the neighborhood at that time is a single data point that might not be representative of the whole.

The same idea applies to traffic.

While a road may seem desolate around noon, it could be a main thoroughfare for the community, bumper-to-bumper after 5pm. Chris had worked with couples who didn’t realize the house they were looking at was on a busy street until late in the purchase.

For Chris, who opened the Lake Minnetonka Office of Lakes Area Realty in 2019, finding the perfect house for a family is much more than a “transactional relationship.” Drilling down beyond the broad specifications of a house builds relationships that stand the test of time, ideally, “from your first home to your last.”

SENIOR PORTRAITS

SuperCoaches to the Rescue

Somehow, school is almost back in session. You’ve snagged the last-minute clothing sales, replaced that mysteriously vanished charger (again), and double-checked that the notebooks are, in fact, wide-ruled. But one of the most important items might be missing from your back-to-school list — SuperCoaches.

As a mom of three boys in Minnetonka, Jennifer Shawgo ran into an issue so many parents face. “When my younger two needed extra help in language arts, we started the arduous process of finding a tutor, interviewing names the school suggested, and trying to find someone who was a good fit. Plus, my boys also play sports, and instead of signing up for additional camps, I hired local athletes to play lacrosse with my kids. But that process was pretty clunky,

HOW ONE MINNETONKA MOM CREATED A GAMECHANGING PLATFORM CONNECTING FAMILIES WITH TRUSTED TUTORS AND COACHES

Jennifer Shawgo, founder of SuperCoaches

having to schedule times through their parents and pay in cash. There had to be an easier way. By the end, I said to my husband, ‘I wish there was a website where I could find local teachers and local athletes who could come tutor and coach my boys.’”

And so, SuperCoaches was born.

Jennifer launched the SuperCoaches’ website,  supercoaches. org, this past September, creating a platform for parents to connect their kids with a tutor or coach, offering both in-person and virtual options. Parents can read reviews and ratings to make sure they’re a good fit, view all the tutors’ or coaches’ credentials, skills, and specialties, and, for the icing on the cake, enjoy a seamless process to schedule and pay for their services.

“We’ve absolutely loved our experience with SuperCoaches!” shares Candace Rust, who used the platform for accelerated math support and ACT prep. “The platform has been a total gamechanger for our family. The results have been phenomenal. The tutors are top-notch—professional, engaging, and incredibly knowledgeable. They’ve built great rapport with my kids and really helped boost their confidence.”

Finding someone your kids connect with is key. “Our coaches and tutors range from high-school-aged students and college kids to teachers and retired teachers who still love to teach, making it easy to find someone your child bonds well with,” shares Jennifer. “All tutors and coaches on the site pass a background check, and we’ve partnered with the National Association for Youth Sports to provide online training certification for all our sports coaches.”

SuperCoaches not only benefits the kids but also creates a flexible work opportunity for the tutors and coaches. “I’m always a big fan of finding what you love to do and being able to earn while doing it. Coaches and tutors can use the platform as a launch point for their business. They fill out their profile, highlight their expertise and training, and then set their own hours and prices, keeping 95% of their rate and only paying $10 per month to host their profile on the website.”

Kika Cuneo, a recent IB graduate from Tonka and one of the homework helpers on the site, shares, “Being able to coach

students on a schedule that works best for the student and myself has been wonderful and is especially helpful if a student needs more support one week and less another, depending on workload and goals. I also love being able to make strong connections with students in my community through one-on-one work.”

“I get so many positive emails from parents,” says Jennifer. “Recently, one parent hired a lacrosse coach for her two little boys, as one was especially anxious about upcoming tryouts. She wrote me afterward and said the experience was better than she could ever have imagined, helping her son feel more confident.”

SuperCoaches also added the ability to search for neurodiverse tutoring options, allowing parents to find tutors and teachers who specialize in helping kids with dyslexia, ADHD, and autism, giving both parents and kids that much-needed extra support.

“We’re excited to continue to impact communities locally and all over the US as we grow,” says Jennifer. “We hope to spread the word so both students and coaches can take advantage of everything SuperCoaches offers. It’s been so rewarding to see how this is bringing people together and striking change in the community.”

Ride the Last Waves of Summer

SOAK UP THE FINAL GOLDEN DAYS OF SUMMER WITH BAY TO BAY’S LUXURY PONTOONS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNA KO PHOTOGRAPHY

The universe sometimes seems to conspire against Minnesotans by not allowing us to fully enjoy the entirety of our precious summer. School supplies are available in July. Back-to-school clothing sales flood our emails. Fall athletics are already ramping up. Before we know it, we will be staring down September.

Tom Jacob, owner of Bay to Bay Boat Club, has a simple antidote to being prematurely rushed into autumn. Rent a pontoon and get everyone out on the water. And he means everyone.

It’s the 25th anniversary of Bay to Bay Boat Club, and these boats have hosted some serious fun over the years. Tom has seen birthday parties take place on the lake, anniversary celebrations, off-site coworker bonding, and even a wedding take place on one of his pontoons. But he also points out it’s the perfect way for the entire family to get completely off the grid for the day.

“You have a captive audience. It’s a great way to spend quality time with your kids and keep them off the phones.”

Keeping kids off phones has become a full-time job these days, and it’s not just the kids distracted by tech. It’s all of us. A day on the lake offers a respite from the hustle and bustle of everything and allows us to slow down and live the summer pace. Think 1970s summer style, back when we weren’t all available all the time. Bliss.

Pontoons are available in 25 ft, which fits 10 guests comfortably, or 28 ft, which accommodates 14 people. And these are not your grandmother’s pontoons. Bay to Bay offers custom-built

luxury pontoons outfitted with bimini tops, Bluetooth, and swim ladders. These boats can be your floating living room for a half or full day. Starting July 1st of 2025, all boaters are required to have a license. Other than that, just bring your suit, and you’ll be ready to go.

Tom tells me, “It’s great for taking the family out or out-oftown people. Anchor out on the family side of Big Island. Bring your own floaties and pool noodles and jump in. People who come from both coasts have no clue what we have here. They can’t believe it. This lake is a gift.” Families can pack a picnic and eat lunch in the sun or come off the lake and then enjoy many of the lakeside restaurants for the perfect alfresco day.

Half-day and full-day rentals range from $550 to $825, depending on boat size and day of the week. All taxes and fuel are included, so there are no hidden fees to put a damper on your lake day experience.

The days are soon going to be shorter and darker, and Tom encourages all of us to “embrace summer while you still can.” The warm weather won’t last forever, but the lake day memories will. Add taking a Bay to Bay pontoon out for a spin to your summer bucket list. And bring the kids. Their traditional “what did you do this summer” essays will be extra special.

ASK THE EXPERTS: HOW TO KEEP YOUR PET HEALTHY & HAPPY WITH WESTONKA ANIMAL HOSPITAL

“We offer numerous services so our guests don’t need to go see specialists often outside of our care,” says Dr. Piepkorn. “Being able to provide both advanced dentistry and surgeries is more economical for our guests.”

Beyond medical care, the Westonka team is committed to guiding pet owners through everyday decisions that promote long-term health. From nutrition and exercise to routine check-ups, they offer expert recommendations to help ensure every pet lives a happy, comfortable life.

NUTRITION, TREATS & FOOD STORAGE TIPS

When it comes to nutrition, the team recommends sticking with reputable, research-backed brands. “The best food for your pet is the one they’ll eat and thrive on,” says Dr. Piepkorn, who feeds her own dog Purina EN, a complete and easy-to-digest formula. While some pet parents explore boutique or raw diets, Westonka encourages them to ensure any food—raw or homecooked—is nutritionally balanced and handled safely.

One common oversight? Food storage. To keep kibble fresh and appetizing, Dr. Piepkorn advises using airtight containers and minimizing air space to prevent oxidation. And while pets don’t crave variety like humans due to their lack of taste buds, unhealthy human treats should be strictly avoided— especially toxic ingredients like grapes and macadamia nuts. Instead, reach for carrots or a peanut butter-stuffed Kong for a healthy, engaging snack.

PLAY, EXERCISE & SAFE ACCESSORIES

Mental stimulation and exercise are key to a healthy, happy pet. Westonka recommends interactive toys, like Busy Buddy or Kong products, that make pets “work for their food.” When heading outside, especially during Minnesota’s brisk winters, the team suggests bundling pets in jackets or booties and using a harness—particularly for dogs with sensitive tracheas. Choke chains are discouraged, while Easy Walk or Gentle Leader harnesses offer safer alternatives.

CHECKUPS, DENTAL CARE & BEHAVIORAL WELLNESS

Routine care for pets goes far beyond just vaccines. According to Dr. Piepkorn, one of the most commonly overlooked aspects of pet health is weight management and dental care—both of which are essential to long-term wellness. “These areas are often missed, but they play a major role in your pet’s overall health,” she explains. Regular veterinary checkups are key to catching subtle changes early, allowing for timely intervention with issues like weight, arthritis, hypothyroidism, or other age-related conditions.

“Pets go through distinct life stages,” adds Dr. Piepkorn. “We typically see them often in their first year, yearly during their healthy adult phase, and more regularly again as they enter their senior years and begin to develop chronic health concerns.” No matter the life stage, Westonka’s guiding philosophy remains constant: “We treat our patients’ pets the way we would treat our own.”

When it comes to behavior, Westonka Animal Hospital encourages pet parents to be both proactive and compassionate. “Fear and anxiety aren’t a reflection of you as an owner. The most important step is acknowledging the issue and working through it,” says Dr. Piepkorn. While medication can be a helpful tool when needed, the team prefers to start with more natural solutions such as nutrition and environmental enrichment—always with the pet’s comfort and well-being as the top priority.

FINAL ADVICE FROM THE EXPERTS

Westonka Animal Hospital encourages all pet owners to plan ahead and focus on early socialization—it’s one of the most impactful things you can do for your pet’s long-term well-being. “Socialize, socialize, socialize—then maybe socialize some more,” laughs Dr. Piepkorn. Paired with routine exercise, consistent feeding schedules, and a good dental care regimen, these small habits can make a big difference.

Whether you’re a new pet parent or caring for a senior companion, Westonka Animal Hospital’s expert advice underscores that the path to pet wellness starts with intention, information, and heart.
