The Threads That Tie Us Together

Hey friends,

I’ve been thinking lately about what style really means. Not the kind you find on runways or in the latest trend report—but the kind that shows up in the everyday moments that make up our lives.

Style is a creative spark, a fresh start, a bold step forward. It’s the helping neighbors out of your garage that turns into a family business. It’s the paintbrush that brings a school wall to life. It’s a closet full of thrifted pieces that suddenly feel like “you.” It’s even the way we cheer on our own when one of them makes it to the big leagues.

This issue is all about that kind of style—the kind rooted in heart, hustle and home. We’ve met some amazing people this month whose stories remind us that showing up with intention, creativity and purpose is always in style.

My hope is that as you flip through these pages, you’re reminded just how much beauty and talent lives right here in Lake Houston. These aren’t just stories— they’re reminders of what’s possible when we follow our passions, support each other and stay true to who we are.

Thanks for reading, sharing and being part of this community with us. You are the reason this magazine exists, and we don’t take that for granted.

Until next month—

"As a kid, I always said I wanted to be an artist—and now I actually am."

Meet Nathan Warner

How Nathan turned a lifelong love of art into a full-time career

WHAT FIRST INSPIRED YOU TO START PAINTING AND HOW DID IT EVOLVE INTO A FULL-TIME BUSINESS?

When you are a little kid everyone always asks you, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” My answer was always the same: “I want to be an artist." I’m proud to call myself a creative, an artist, a maker, a husband and a father.  I painted my first murals at my church, mainly in the kids’ areas. That led to splash murals for businesses and schools, especially elementary schools, which I’m passionate about. I actually have a degree in art education, so those projects feel extra meaningful. Turning this into a fulltime business wouldn’t have happened without my wife Amy. She pushes me outside my comfort zone, is always honest and believes in me fully.

HOW DO YOU APPROACH DESIGNING A MURAL FOR DIFFERENT SPACES LIKE A SCHOOL VERSUS A HOME OR BUSINESS?

It always starts with the client—asking questions, learning their vision and often showing mockups to help clarify what they do or don’t want. Even if they aren’t sure at first, the process helps us get there. I always try to include a little of myself in each mural, whether it’s my style, a hidden Mickey or something I’d love to see every day.

WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR MOST MEANINGFUL PROJECTS?

The two murals I painted at Big Air Trampoline Park on FM 1960. One is 30 feet tall and the other is the largest I’ve ever done. It was intimidating, but I faced my fear of heights, learned to use a scissor lift and leaned on prayer and my wife’s support. I’m really proud of those.

WHAT CHALLENGES COME WITH RUNNING A CREATIVE BUSINESS?

Not always painting and creating what I want—but I can honestly say I grow from each consultation, sketch, reworking, critique and compliment.

HUFFMAN FAMILY BUSINESS STARTED WITH HELPING NEIGHBORS

Floors, family and 4-wheelers

ARTICLE AND
BY TIFFANY HARSTON
Kenny & Colleen Hoyt
I just got done gardening and the kids are here, but sure, come over!
– Colleen

It all started with a few neighbors in need. Back in 1997, while building their home in Huffman, Kenny and Colleen Hoyt noticed their builder was struggling and eventually went out of business, leaving other neighboring homeowners high and dry. Kenny, who worked for a flooring manufacturer at the time, was able to help neighbors source carpet, tile and other finishes. Before long, word spread.

“We were literally showing stuff on 4-wheelers out of our garage,” says Colleen with a laugh. “People would call and ask for help, and I’d say, ‘I just got done gardening and the kids are here, but sure, come over!’”

What began as casual help for neighbors and friends soon turned into a business and Kenny proposed the idea to open a shop. Colleen, a stayat-home mom at the time, wasn’t so sure. “I said I’d do it if I could be closed on Mondays,” she says. At first Kenny was hesitant to have a retail store closed on Mondays, but then he agreed. So the couple officially opened Lakeside Floors in 2000 and rented a space with Colleen showing the product and Kenny doing the measurements. Originally they were going to share the space with a realtor. The realtor got cold feet and when she asked to join the space months later, Colleen told her they were doing well and were using all the space.

Colleen, a warm, bubbly extrovert with a signature Southern accent, was the heart of those early customer interactions. Kenny, her soft-spoken and kind counterpart, kept things grounded with his matterof-fact approach and industry know-how. Their personalities balanced each other perfectly—and still do.

YOUR STYLE, YOUR SPACE

From day one, the Hoyts have focused on running an ethical customer-first business that values relationships above all else. “This is a people business,” Colleen says. “We offer the same products as the big-box stores but we offer something more—we truly care."

Serving Huffman, Kingwood and the entire greater Houston area, Lakeside Floors continues to be the region’s go-to destination for flooring, tile, countertops and personalized remodeling services.

“We’re a family-owned and operated business,” Kenny says. “And we treat our customers like family. Helping people select products that reflect their personal taste and needs is what we love to do.”

A SHOWROOM BUILT AROUND SERVICE

Their customer service combined with the vast offerings led to the business steadily growing and in 2019 they built and opened their larger new location off 1960 just over the bridge into Huffman.

At Lakeside Floors, customers will find an expansive showroom filled with everything from luxurious carpet and exotic hardwoods to durable vinyl, stylish stone and modern tile. The store also supplies and installs premium granite countertops, making it a one-stop shop for full kitchen and bathroom remodels.

With brand names customers know and trust—like Mohawk, Shaw, Bruce, Mullican, Teragren and many more—there’s something to fit every style and budget. But what sets the Hoyts apart is how they make the entire process stress-free.

“Our professionals are happy to come to your home to provide measurements and we encourage you to stop by and take samples home,” Kenny says. “We want our customers to feel confident that the final product is exactly what they envisioned—in both look and function.”

A TRUSTED TEAM

Lakeside Floors isn't just known for its vast product selection—it’s also praised for its long-standing team of skilled installers who have been with the business for years. Unlike many companies that outsource installations to whoever is available, the Hoyts work with specialized crews they’ve been working with for 20 years: a tile crew, a wood crew, a countertop crew and so on.

“These are people we know and trust,” Colleen says. “We wouldn’t send anyone into a customer’s home that

we wouldn’t feel comfortable with in our own. That’s how we build trust.”

TECHNOLOGY MEETS DESIGN

To help customers explore their style and visualize new upgrades, Lakeside Floors has an online room visualizer. The tool allows users to upload a photo of their space and experiment with different flooring, paint colors, tile layouts and countertop options before making a decision.

“It’s a game-changer,” said Colleen. “You don’t have to imagine it—we let you see it. This makes remodeling feel exciting not overwhelming.”

Whether you prefer cozy carpet, rustic wood, bold tile or sleek granite, the team at Lakeside Floors To Go will help you design a space that feels like your style, in your home.

THRIFT WITH Intention

Thrifty tips to curate your wardrobe and define your personal style in confidence!

As seasons change and trends shift, it can be challenging to stay stylish. Janel of My Mayne Wardrobe is a personal stylist and resident thrifting connoisseur, so we asked her for tips on thrifty styling. She said a curated closet takes time and planning, but she promises it's worth it, and you can build it on a budget.

Thrift Local First.

Shop second hand first because it’s sustainable, and it offers access to budget friendly high-quality finds. One key to avoid thrift overwhelm is understanding the different shop styles. Consignment shops are often highly curated, and you'll find a mix of luxury and name brand. At thrift shops, go in with an open mind and be ready to hunt for unique pieces.

JANEL PRO TIP: Visit thrift stores at the beginning of the year when everyone is purging and decluttering.

Thrift with Intention.

Dedicate time to identifying what outfits make you feel confident and what’s important to your personal style. Check Pinterest for inspiration and shop your closet to pull together looks at home. Identify pieces your missing, and then, it’s time to shop!

JANEL PRO TIP: Shop coats at thrift shops. Leather, cashmere, trench and bomber – there is usually a wide range to choose from.

Thrift Your List.

Create a thrift list and save it to your phone – it helps you make intentional and thoughtful purchases and avoid overspending. Before you check out, make sure each new piece checks all the boxes.

Does it make me feel confident?

Can I style it more than three ways? Does it align with my current lifestyle? Does it add value or fill a gap in my closet?

JANEL’S STYLE TIPS:

Five things every stylish woman needs? Cute flats, white tee, great jeans, colorful jacket and a versatile dress.

One thing in your wardrobe you can’t live without. My blazers! They just complete an outfit and create a look that’s pulled together.

Thrift with intention. Buy less and choose well by investing in what you really want.

Thrift wisely and visit shops based on your budget and desired quality level.

Create a thrift list and save it on your phone. Quality check before checkout!

“I

encourage clients not to worry about what they ‘should’ be wearing and find a style that resonates with them so they can step out each day with confidence. The right outfits can be healing.”

Shifting from a hospital setting where she wore scrubs every day to business casual office, Janel Mayne of My Mayne Wardrobe experienced what she calls a style meltdown in her 20’s. She embraced the change, taught herself how to feel confident in her clothes again and reclaimed her personal style. Now, she offers a personal styling service that helps women feel empowered. She even sources secondhand pieces for clients, proving to professionals that they can stay stylish, and stay on budget.

Her clients often come from serving professions, including nurses, teachers, flight attendants and medical professionals, who get stuck in “uniform syndrome” and need help finding themselves through fashion. She’s recently worked with new moms and retired military veterans.

“New moms often find themselves in a new season with a new baby and completely different style needs,” she said. “Their bodies have changed, and they need help adapting with comfortable, stylish options. It is possible to be an amazing mother and maintain your ideality and style.”

Brice Matthews blasts into MLB with two-home-run breakout
“Growing up here and watching this team... to now being here as a player, I couldn’t ask for more.”

On Monday, July 21, the 23-year-old second baseman hit his first and second big league home runs and drove in five runs in a breakout game for the Houston Astros. With the team fighting to stay in the playoff hunt, Matthews delivered when it mattered most, powering the Astros to a season-critical 6-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix.

From a star at Nebraska to an MLB rookie summoned up in an emergency, Matthews came through with the pressure being extreme. The star athlete demonstrated the raw power and potential that led to his being drafted in the first round.

Just weeks before, Matthews had been preparing to play in the All-Star Futures Game. Instead, a last-minute promotion changed his trajectory.

Originally scheduled to play in Atlanta, Matthews flew from Oklahoma City to Houston after being

summoned to the majors by his hometown team.

On July 5, he made his Major League debut at Daikin Park—just minutes from where his journey began at Atascocita High School.

A two-sport standout in high school, Matthews was the starting quarterback and star shortstop. He credits his time at Atascocita with building the mental and physical toughness that prepared him for the demands of pro sports.

After an impressive collegiate career at the University of Nebraska, Matthews was drafted by the Astros in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft. His rise through the minor league system was fast and fierce—he hit for the cycle in May and was named the Astros Minor League Player of the Month in June, posting a .283 batting average with 10 home runs and 25 stolen bases for Triple-A Sugar Land.

The Astros brought him up in response to a roster injury and manager Joe Espada emphasized that this was more than a temporary patch.

Matthews quickly proved he could rise to the occasion. In just his sixth Major League game, he smashed two home runs and drove in five runs—a rare feat for any player let alone a rookie.

"Growing up here and seeing so many different moments from this team in all different facets and now being here," Matthews said with a smile as he spoke to reporters prior to his first Major League game. "From being a fan to being a player, I couldn't have asked for anything more than this."

While his power and poise are now making headlines nationwide, Matthews hasn’t forgotten his roots. He regularly returns to Atascocita High School during the offseason where he trains and reconnects with the coaches who helped shape his early career. Several of them were in the stands for his MLB debut, celebrating the hometown hero’s arrival on baseball’s biggest stage.

From Atascocita to Nebraska to Houston, Brice Matthews’ journey is marked by grit, heart and timely heroics. With his first two home runs under his belt and a pivotal win already behind him, the rookie is wasting no time making an impact.

And for the community that raised him, he’s already a legend in the making.
