Shotgun!

I mean, sure, I’ll ride along. I’m all for hopping in a golf cart on a beautiful summer day. Besides the actual “playing” golf, what’s not to love about spending the day on the course with Jay? Some people treat golf with the reverence typically reserved for religious ceremonies or the handling of uranium. Some people get salty when I don’t adhere to their “No talking during tee-off.” Jay understands my impatience with the game as much as I understand Jay’s love of the game. This is why I read Lorilee Cummings’s interview with RJ Villafuerte, General Manager at Family Golf and Learning Center, with particular interest. RJ provided a list of his favorite drivers featuring the latest technology. Jay just came back from two golf trips and mentioned he needed a new driver. Thanks to that article, I’ve got Father’s Day done. This issue is dedicated to Jay, my favorite driver, who always has a seat next to him open for me to hop in and ride shotgun.

ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE

The Audi Way

Audi Exchange Kirkwood achieves Audi’s 2024 Magna Society Elite Award.

ARTICLE BY SYDNEY TAYLOR | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS HAYES

As St. Louisans, we take pride in being the best—from our devoted baseball fans to the country’s most affordable zoo to the Magic House. Audi Exchange Kirkwood can proudly be added to that list, having earned one of only 17 Magna Society Elite Awards for 2024, placing it in the top 5% of Audi dealerships nationwide.

“We weren’t chasing the award. We were chasing excellence. And excellence brought the award,” General Manager Neil Westfall said. “As we got closer to the end of the year, I said, ‘We have a shot at this.’” This coveted award is even more remarkable because Neil and his team achieved it in seven months.

Audi Exchange Kirkwood opened the brand-new dealership in the spring of 2024. The timing of the grand opening meant that Neil and his team only had seven months to achieve Audi excellence. “We did our jobs. That was easy,” said Neil. He added, “We knew we’d get there. We just didn’t expect it to happen so soon.”

Neil credits the dealership’s success to a winning combination of culture, teamwork, and community. “We control how we operate. We control how we take care of people,” Neil explained. “It’s a culmination of all parts of the dealership working together. It’s not a singular thing… You can’t just hit sales numbers,” Neil said. “We worked our way through team members to find the right mix of people who know how to treat our customers really well.”

With over 20 years in the car sales business, Neil invests in every team member, starting at the ground level.

“Getting that buy-in from every person on our team is key, including the young kid who started at the dealership with a part-time job. That’s how my boss started; that’s how I started,” Neil said. He also acknowledges the importance of establishing a local foundation.

“Everybody who works here is from St. Louis. They understand what St. Louis and Kirkwood are about,” Neil said. “We don’t know everything. But we understand that St. Louis gets things done by helping St. Louis people. By supporting us, you’re also supporting your neighbors.”

What sets Neil and his team apart from other dealerships is their approach to customer experience.

“We want people to walk in and say, ‘Whoa, this is a little different.’ And then we set out to prove to you how Audi Exchange Kirkwood really is different,” Neil said.

Audi Exchange Kirkwood has nearly perfected creating a standout customer

experience. Every interaction is tailored to each individual, ensuring the best possible encounter with their client. “Our job is to make your life a little bit easier. There has to be genuineness to it.”

“It’s one person at a time. How you care for them individually, with specialized treatment and care, can change someone’s opinion. Then they tell their friends or their parents,” Neil said. “It’s not about having the best car—it’s about having the best experience. That’s what keeps people coming back.”

Neil emphasized that while first impressions matter, long-term relationships are built over time.

“I can show customers beautiful cars and a beautiful building. My staff has a nice smile, but that’s surface level,” Neil said. “It really comes down the road as you service clients. You’ve got to build equity, which comes with every interaction.”

Audi Exchange Kirkwood’s commitment to excellence extends beyond the dealership. They’re making an impact off the road, too. Neil is the Board President of the St. Louis European Auto Show, which benefits St. Louis Arc. This nonprofit United Way agency provides support and services to more than 4,000 adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families throughout the St. Louis area. Audi Exchange Kirkwood was also instrumental in the Drive with Heart program benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“We don’t have to ask for help at our non-profit events. People immediately ask, ‘What can I do?’ And we want to do that for others, too,” Neil explained. “It’s a relationship you build upon in the community. We value our relationships with the City of Kirkwood, the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center, and the Kirkwood-Des Peres Area Chamber of Commerce.”

NEIL WESTFALL | GENERAL MANAGER

Join Neil at the European Auto Show at MINI of St. Louis on Sunday, June 9th, from 11:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vehicles on display include Audi, Ferrari, MG, Bugatti, Porsche, Lamorghini, Ducati, BMW, Mercedes, and many more. This free event has been a tradition since 1987 and occurs yearly, rain or shine. The show benefits St. Louis Arc.

Although the team is celebrating their 2024 achievement, Neil’s eyes are focused on the road ahead. “The Magna award is for last year’s performance,” Neil noted. “I don’t want to hit cruise control. I always want to be a little better. And once you get to that self-sustaining point, you can get exceptionally good at things,” Neil said. “We’ve done great things. But we’re not great yet. We accept excellence, but we chase perfection. There’s no such thing. That drives me.”

Visit Neil and his team at Audi Exchange Kirkwood, 10230 Manchester Rd, and walk in and feel the difference.

REAL SIX STRING

FATHER-SON DUO SHREDS CONVENTION, AMPLIFIES CUSTOM GUITAR LEGACY.

Nathan Putney

Eddie’s Guitars in Maplewood isn’t just a showroom for rare and custom guitars— it’s the product of decades of dedication and a close bond between Kirkwood resident Nathan Putney and his father, Eddie.

Ed Putney began his career in music retail at Tower Grove Music, where he worked his way up to become a partner. In 1971, after years of dedication, he earned the opportunity to buy the business, securing a loan from his parents to make it happen. Nearly three decades later, in 2000, the store was rebranded as Eddie’s Guitars, marking a new era as Nathan officially joined the family business.

“I always hung around the store when I was a little kid,” Nathan said. “I played hide and seek with my sister, and the employees would stash me in drum cases and then place me on a top shelf.”

CONTINUED >

Today, Nathan serves as owner and president, having grown up immersed in the world his father built. Over the years, Eddie sold guitars to legendary artists, including St. Louis’s own Chuck Berry.

As the industry evolved, so did their approach. “When bigger conglomerates came to town, we had to pivot,” Nathan explained. “We focused on boutique and custom-built guitars—things you don’t see everywhere else.”

That shift paid off. Eddie’s Guitars is now recognized internationally for its curated, high-end selection and is one of the top dealers in the world for the manufacturers it represents, with an extremely strong presence on social media. Still, at its core, it remains a family business, rooted in a shared passion not only for guitars but also for classic cars.

“Cars have always been a big part of my relationship with my dad,” Nathan said. “Some of my favorite memories are the two of us working on them together. These days, we’ve gotten into Porsches and Shelby Cobras, but it’s always been more about the time spent than the cars themselves.”

As for what’s next, Nathan says the future of the store is open. “I don’t pressure my kids to take over. If they want to, great. If not, that’s okay too.”

What hasn’t changed is the foundation of the business. “I couldn’t have grown this business without my dad, my mom, and my family. And the guys who work here—they’re incredible. They bring the same level of passion my dad and I have always had.”

AUTHENTICITY OVER AUTOMATION

Jason Craft at Enterprise Bank & Trust Creates Real Relationships in a Digital World.

In an era where digital banking reigns supreme and AI chatbots answer customer service calls, Enterprise Bank & Trust is taking a refreshingly human approach to commercial banking—and its clients are noticing the difference. “When you walk into the Kirkwood banking center, you are greeted by people, not kiosks. You’ll never be told you need an appointment to do business. It feels like a

community bank,” said Jason Craft, branch manager at Enterprise Bank & Trust in Kirkwood, which is located on Kirkwood Road, in front of Target.

WHAT SETS ENTERPRISE BANK & TRUST IN KIRKWOOD APART?

“We are built on trusted, personal relationships, so our bankers do what we say we’re going

Nick DiStefano, Rob Williams and Jason Craft (l-r)

to do and honor our commitments,” said Jason. “But more than that, we are out serving our community.” Enterprise bankers spend less time behind desks and more time in their clients’ businesses.

Jason discussed his recent visit to Auto Art, where the owners, Robert Williams and Nick DiStefano, were delighted to showcase their significant investments in modernizing the facility. “Robert and Nick were eager about their new spray booths and other equipment,” said Jason. “They were so happy, and I got to be part of that excitement.”

The relationship-focused approach pays dividends when businesses face critical transitions. When Auto Art’s original owner wanted someone to take on his legacy, Jason and his team weren’t just processing paperwork—they were facilitating a meaningful transition based on understanding the business’s value beyond the balance sheet.

“If all you’re talking about are numbers and figures, then you’re not really

doing your job,” Jason shared, quoting a former mentor. “We spent most of our visit at Auto Art talking about the history surrounding that business and what it means to everyone working on the Auto Art team,” Jason said. His favorite part of the customer visit was discussing Nick’s upcoming wedding this weekend and the Model T he’s arriving in. “You build relationships by leading with heart and hard work, and the rest will follow.”

This relationship-centered banking creates significant advantages when businesses need additional capital or to navigate during uncertainty. “We spend time with you more meaningfully; larger financial institutions don’t,” explained Jason. “Our relationships create the foundations for helping businesses expand and scale.”

This approach offers a compelling alternative for business owners tired of being treated like account numbers rather than people with dreams and challenges. By taking the time to understand clients’ passions and witnessing firsthand the

investments they’ve made, Jason and his team at Enterprise Bank & Trust position themselves as partners in their clients’ journeys rather than just service providers.

Enterprise’s commitment extends beyond individual client relationships to deep community involvement. The bank’s leadership, including CEO Jim Lally, who raised his family in Kirkwood, maintains strong local ties. Jason is a Kirkwood—Des Peres Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassador who also participates in events for the Kirkwood School District Foundation and the Kirkwood Public Library. Enterprise Bank & Trust is also honored to be one of the sponsors of Glendale’s newest community event, The Glendale Summer Bash at Glendale City Hall, on June 13th from 7 - 10 p.m.

This high-touch approach reminds us that behind every successful business transaction lies something fundamentally human: relationships built on genuine interest, mutual respect, and shared community values.

People can bank anywhere and choose Enterprise Bank & Trust because, together, there’s no stopping you.

BBQ and Beyond

Dalie’s Head Chef Craig Basler reflects on 10 years of flavor, family, and community.

WHAT DOES THIS 10-YEAR MILESTONE MEAN TO YOU AND THE TEAM?

It means everything. We’ve built amazing relationships over the years. Our team feels like family, and so do our customers. Some folks have been coming here since day one, a couple of times a week. It has given us a chance to become part of this community.

HOW HAS DALIE’S EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS?

At first, it was total chaos. We were figuring it out as we went along. But now, we’ve nailed down daily specials,

such as Cajun Wednesdays and comfort food inspired by my grandparents’ recipes. We even started making our own sausage and charcuterie in-house. We continually strive to expand our efforts.

WHAT MAKES DALIE’S STAND OUT?

It’s more than just barbecue. We found that out a long time ago. We try to create a relaxed, backyard vibe where everyone feels welcome. We don’t have servers, but on weekends, someone is on the floor interacting with customers. Without that element, it wouldn’t taste as good.

FIRST VISIT TO DALIE’S - WHAT DO YOU ORDER?

You’ve got to try the ribs. If you want a sandwich, order the Cuban; people have said it’s the best you can get outside of Cuba.

WHAT’S THE MOST UNDERRATED ITEM ON THE MENU?

Surprisingly, the smoked balsamic portobello mushroom sandwich is a hit. We created it for an event, but people loved it so much that we had to keep it. Even meat-eaters rave about it.

ANY FAVORITE

DISHES?

I like our smoked pork belly pastrami. Making it can be time-consuming, but man, it’s worth it.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR DALIE’S?

Expanding, for sure. Maybe a retail spot for our sausages and charcuterie, more special events, and one day, a pizza oven out back for laid-back wine-and-pizza nights.

WHAT’S THE PLAN FOR THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY

BASH?

It’s going to be awesome. We’ll have a crawfish boil, a hog roast, and live music. June 29th is the exact day we opened 10 years ago, so it felt right to celebrate it big with everyone who’s been along for the ride.

Garage Takeover Transformations

As a professional organizer, I’ve seen firsthand how a well-organized garage can completely change the flow and feel of a home. At Organized Interiors, we believe a neat, intentional environment leads to an easier everyday life, and your garage is no exception.

Garages tend to collect a wide range of items— from gardening tools and tennis rackets to tricycles and sidewalk chalk. But they can also be one of the most versatile and valuable spaces. Whether it’s for storing holiday decorations, crafting a home gym, or even building an entertainment area, we’ve worked with clients across the St. Louis area to help redefine what their garages can be.

I’ve collaborated with Beyond Storage, a family-owned business that provides custom organization systems, making spaces more functional and enjoyable. “Garages tend to be vastly different from one to the next—it’s an area of a home where everyone’s needs are very different,” said the Vice President of Beyond Storage, Connor Gast. Their team offers solutions like overhead storage racks, slat walls, and modular cabinetry—each tailored to suit specific lifestyles.

I always emphasize to clients the importance of vertical space and keeping items off the floor. It helps manage clutter and protects against damage from moisture. “It’s always a good idea to keep things off the floor in a garage, just

“I’ve seen clients turn garages into everything from ‘man caves’ to custom home gyms; people are taking more pride in these once-overlooked areas.”

because of rain and moisture that can get in there,” Connor shared.

Beyond Storage offers storage solutions that are both customizable and adjustable. “You can change it at any point in time, and the modification is very simple and cost-effective for the customer,” Connor explained. Whether your kids outgrow their sports equipment or you pick up a new hobby, your storage system can grow with you.

Lately, I’ve seen clients turn garages into everything from “man caves” to custom home gyms; people are taking more pride in these once-overlooked areas. “Garages have become a showcase for their homes,” Connor noted. “We turned an entire garage into a sports training zone with a roll-up turf floor, TV, and sound system.”

“For garages short on space to install cabinets on the walls, we’ll install

overhead storage with a remote lift for easy access,” Connor said.

Slat wall panels offer infinite storage solutions for bike racks, lawn tools, and sports equipment. “Rolling workbenches are very popular. We customize ours with multiple drawers for tools and a solid butcher block top,” Connor said. “We customize every part of your garage design based on your storage needs, how you want to use the garage, and who is using the garage.”

If you’re thinking about transforming the space in your garage, finding a practical storage solution is an essential step in the process.

movement is medicine

Movement is medicine. But what happens when the pain makes movement unbearable?

As the founder of Strong By Intention, I know that mindful movement is a foundational pillar of health and wellness. I spoke to Dr. Jim Hankinson, a chiropractor with 25 years of experience at Back to Wellness in Kirkwood, about why men are notorious for delaying treatment until pain symptoms become unbearable and movement is practically diminished. Dr. Jim explains why that mindset needs to change—and how innovative treatments can help decrease pain and improve a healthy quality of life.

KATIE: DESCRIBE “MEN’S HEALTH.”

Dr. Jim: It’s about staying fit mentally, physically, and emotionally. Health is the whole picture—not just treating symptoms but improving daily life.

KATIE: WHAT PREVENTS MEN FROM TAKING CARE OF THEIR HEALTH?

Dr. Jim: Stubbornness. Men think, “I’m the man. I’m supposed to handle this.” Usually, their wives finally say, “Get this taken care of—I’m tired of hearing you whine about it.”

KATIE: WHY IS MOBILITY SO IMPORTANT FOR MEN?

Dr. Jim: It’s the key to aging well. Regular stretching and adjustments help prevent chronic neck, back, or hip pain. Prevention beats cure every time.

KATIE: WHAT FINALLY GETS MEN IN THE DOOR?

Dr. Jim: When pain interferes with the things they enjoy—golfing, pickleball, even standing at work. When they can’t live life the way they want, that’s when they seek help.

KATIE: WHAT MAKES SOFTWAVE THERAPY UNIQUE FOR PAIN RELIEF?

Dr. Jim: SoftWave treats a wide range of joint and muscle issues—knees, shoulders, back, TMJ, plantar fasciitis, and more. It regenerates damaged tissue, increases blood flow up to 300%, reduces inflammation, and improves mobility. One patient with neuropathy hadn’t felt his foot in years. After one SoftWave session, he walked the hallway and cried because he had hope again. Another, a 56-year-old Ironman finisher, said after one treatment,

“I haven’t felt this good in my knee in 20 years.” Both saw significant improvement immediately. That first-session progress is what we expect to see, but long-term, lasting results take time. Our care plans typically span 6–12 weeks.

KATIE: HAVE YOU PERSONALLY TRIED SOFTWAVE?

Dr. Jim: Absolutely. I’ve had knee, foot, back, neck, and shoulder injuries. I found SoftWave after being told I needed shoulder surgery that would keep me out of work for months. After eight sessions, I was sleeping on my left side again—no surgery required.

KATIE: WHAT OTHER SERVICES DO YOU OFFER?

Dr. Jim: Chiropractic adjustments, manual stretching, electronic stimulation to improve blood flow and reduce muscle tension, and red light therapy, which also helps with inflammation, skin tone, and mood. Many people think we only treat backs and necks. But I can adjust almost any joint—knees, shoulders, feet, even elbows.

KATIE: WHAT DISTINGUISHES YOUR APPROACH?

Dr. Jim: Not all chiropractors work the same way. I focus on comprehensive wellness and utilize various techniques. I’ll refer patients to their primary care doctor if something is beyond my scope.

KATIE: WHAT ARE COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT CHIROPRACTIC CARE?

Dr. Jim: That it’s unsafe, or once you start, you’re locked in. The truth? Chiropractic is very safe. And no, you don’t have to keep coming. You’ll want to because of how much better you feel.

KATIE: WHAT’S YOUR MESSAGE TO MEN WHO ARE DELAYING CARE?

Dr. Jim:  It’s not that hard. Just pick up the phone. The sooner you start treatment, the better your life will be. Don’t wait until the pain takes over.

FROM Fence Talks TO Forever

HOW

ONE FRIENDLY CONVERSATION ACROSS A FENCE CHANGED EVERYTHING FOR QUIN MCINTOSH.

“We just get along like bees and honey,” Quin McIntosh said , smiling as he talked about meeting Kirkwood resident Whitney Stream for the first time.

“It’s a rom-com, but it’s in real life.”

Before meeting Whitney, Quin worked in construction and performed as a musician and a comedian.

“Sometimes life was tough when I was younger,” Quin said. He doesn’t glamorize struggle, but he values what it gave him: perspective and drive. “Everybody has an opportunity to work through things in their life. If you take those opportunities, you might get somewhere.” For Quin, that opportunity was building a business.

Quin founded McIntosh Construction, a St. Louis company known for craftsmanship and culture.

“Without Whitney, I would still have a business, but it would be me and maybe a helper. And I’d be making some music and traveling a little. With her, I’ve been able to build everything I ever wanted.”

Quin met Whitney when he moved into the house next door to her. Quin recalled how that friendship grew as they would talk across the fence between their yards. Their first date was a show. They were engaged six months later; eleven months later, they married.

“Being with Whitney put everything into perspective. I knew exactly what direction my business should go, and I wanted to be a family,” Quin said.

“Transitioning into business ownership has been rewarding for my family and me,” Quin said . “Now I get to lead an all-star team and help clients bring their

visions to life.” At work, Quin tries to build what he has at home—stability, purpose, and a sense of belonging.

And at the center of all of it is Whitney.

“She’s so focused, and grounding,” he said. “She is really sure of who she is and what she wants. Her presence is just so calming for everybody in our house, including our four-year-old, which is tough to be calm around, right?”

Quin’s role as a business leader is second to his most significant role of being a dad.

“People talk about how you’re never really ready for fatherhood. I’m so ready; we can have seven more kids right now. I love it. It’s the best thing. And again, Whitney makes it really easy.”

Music still hums in the background with a dream he’s not done chasing.

“I’m not done with it. I’ve always thought that at 31, I’ll go back and do music. I’ll make another record, play some shows, and tour a little bit,” Quin said

No matter what he accomplishes, every bit of sweetness leads back to Whitney, the one who has Quin buzzing with purpose and helped turn his hustle into honey.
