LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Women’s Issue

As publisher and editor of two magazines (Bellevue Lifestyle and Kirkland Lifestyle), and as a mother of two (2 year old girl and 7 year old boy); the word ‘busy’ has taken on a whole new meaning. I have a new appreciation for all mothers now that I’m “in it.” I love the serendipity that my first issue back managing editorial content is our Women’s issue. Bree stepped in as full-time editor while I was in my hurricane years of infant/early toddler life, and she did a wonderful job managing content.  I’m grateful to still have her as part of the team as a contributing writer.

I love any opportunity to recognize the women in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. And not just mothers, but also business leaders, teachers, family members, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities and pouring into our lives.

In the photo above, I’m pictured with my mom and daughter on Mother’s Day last year. My mom was a nurse for her entire career and upon “retirement” volunteered for the Red Cross and local free clinic, and is still on constant call for her 9 grandbabies when any sickness or injury arises. We’re more than lucky to have the gift of her wisdom, love and constant care.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

Women in Real Estate Marilisa’s Story

My love affair with homes started young, when I would build my own Barbie mansions and decorate the interiors using bits and pieces from my bedroom. A fascination rooted in the ideation of functional space distribution, embellished with carefully selected color and textures, extended into a passion for architecture and design. In 1988 I remember working with my grandad on a science project that involved envisioning a fully “green” home. Together we spec’d out a robust build that collected rain water, capitalized on solar energy and used hydronic heating. I was enraptured with the art of the possible when it came to house building. The idea of the home as a holistic sanctuary that symbolized stability and warmth, stoic in the face of all other external forces, was deeply ingrained in me. Everybody deserved a home and a beautiful one at that.

My parents bought and sold multiple homes growing up and they rented a fair amount too. I remember disliking the transient nature of living in a non-permanent abode and understood early on the importance of timing a purchase and sale right. There was a lot of money to be made or lost. The investment capitalization potential of home ownership was not lost on me and I remember thinking that I would get my foot on the property ladder as soon as I could, because it would be a stepping stone to a portfolio one day. Each time I bought and sold, every strategic move was intentional in order to make maximum profit and build on my existing capital.

Real estate was part of the fabric of who I was from the beginning in one form or another. While working at a local gym in England aged 20, I recruited local businesses to sponsor our in-house newsletter and it was there that I sold an ad space to a boutique real estate agency in Oxford. The owner approached me and asked whether I would be interested in working for him manning his front desk with the goal that he would train me in

all things real estate – clearly he saw potential! I was intrigued by the idea but lofty dreams of working in television led me to decline. However, my love of real estate ran deep and as I meandered through other professional activities, that pulsing desire to buy and sell homes not just for me but for others, became stronger. It was while taking a career psychometric test one April night, in 2015, that the answer became glaringly obvious; I needed to take the plunge into entrepreneurship and start helping people buy and sell property. I knew it wouldn’t be easy to garner clients from scratch, but I had to try.

Fueled by a desire to ensure everyone finds a home, first time buyers, especially those on a tight budget, have been my favorite. The art of negotiation is one that beguiles me and with experience I become increasingly finessed. Offering advice on how to make the most of a property’s potential is where my vision comes into its own and one day I may embark in a more serious renovation business. At its core though, I am thrilled by the prospect of helping others find that sanctuary I realized so early on was every person’s birth right, and I fight tooth and nail for my clients to help them achieve their every real estate goal, no matter how hard it may seem. My happiness is my clients’ happiness; from the first time home renter who just needs a helping hand, to the thriving repeat investor, everybody deserves the highest level of help and representation.

This is my vocation and this is the story of how my life path ultimately took me back to my first love: homes.

Spectating at The Nineteenth
Our room at Hotel 1000

After months of talking about a Girls Night Out, two of my best girlfriends and I decided to make it a priority - there’s nothing like time spent with longtime friends to refresh your soul. After painstakingly nailing down a date (accounting for kids’ and husbands’ schedules), the next question was: Where?

The answer: Downtown Seattle. We only had one night after all and wanted to spend our time enjoying ourselves rather than driving. We chose Hotel 1000 as our homebase for its walkability to amenities

like Pike Place Market and the Seattle Art Museum; and its onsite features: Rosebay cocktail bar, a spa, and The Nineteenth with golf simulators and lounge.

First up were wonderful massages at the Spa at Hotel 1000. We enjoyed a welcoming aroma ritual at the front desk followed by pre-treatment foot soaks, and ended our visit with a few minutes in the sauna.

After a quick change, we headed to The Nineteenth. Following one fun golf round on the simulator, we switched to Zombie Dodgeball which was a hoot.

We hit up Rosebay for pre-dinner cocktails, beautiful concoctions in a low-key and elegant setting; then walked to Il

Bistro for dinner. As cozy and charming as ever, Il Bistro has the best ambience, and food to match. Enroute back to the hotel, we stopped at Diller Room for a nightcap. The historic bar serves classic cocktails to a diverse crowd.

Saturday morning we opted for light bites and espresso at the Storyville coffee shop right across from our hotel before heading to the Seattle Art Museum to take in Native American visual artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith’s Memory Map retrospective (Open through May 12, see it if you can)!

What a delight to spend 22 hours in the city with friends!

A BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY

Chandni Maloo moved here from India in 2018 and unexpectedly built a large social media following amid building a new life in America. Although she has always been inclined towards creativity and design, she never would’ve planned that her journey would lead her to sharing beauty tips with hundreds of thousands of social media followers.  Kirkland Lifestyle asked Chandni to share some details of her journey.

HOW DO YOU THINK LIVING IN AMERICA HAS CHANGED YOU?

I was very excited to explore a new country and gain great experiences, meet new people, and learn about so many new cultures. Living in the United States has changed me

in so many ways.  Exposure to a diverse culture here has broadened my perspective in understanding of different customs, beliefs, and ways of life. Living away from home made me independent and self-reliant, and experiencing a multicultural society made me more aware of diversity, equality, and social issues. I became more empathetic and understanding.  My experiences, traveling, and meeting so many people with different backgrounds have brought me so much joy.

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES?

Adapting to a new culture and lifestyle was challenging. I was homesick and missing my family, friends, and the familiar surroundings

back in India. Then adjusting to the cost of living, housing expenses, healthcare costs, were significant challenges.  Establishing new social networks, making new friends, and building a support system in this country was an effort initially.  The U.S. healthcare system, insurance coverage, and medical services can be daunting for newcomers. Also, physical and emotional adjustment because of climate changes.

WHAT DO YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY KNEW ABOUT INDIAN CULTURE?

I wish more people were aware of many things about Indian culture, including: family values, hospitality, spirituality, festive celebrations, heritage, cuisines, traditions, attires, respect for elders, innovation and technology.  I think by understanding more they can foster cross-cultural, respect diversity, and build more connections with individuals from the Indian community.

YOU ARE A “BEAUTY INFLUENCER” AND HAVE GROWN A LARGE SOCIAL MEDIA FOLLOWING.  CAN YOU SHARE HOW YOU GOT STARTED?

It all started after my postpartum depression after my second boy was born and I

wanted to have some me time. I was always very passionate about self-care and make up, so I started recording and posting on social media.  Initially I started by posting the techniques on how to do your own makeup and importance of skincare. Slowly and organically, I managed to grow my social media account to where it is now; I am grateful and blessed to be loved by so many amazing people.

YOU HOPE TO BE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON WOMEN. CAN YOU SHARE SOME OF YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT?

Women empowerment is indeed a crucial and significant topic and is close to my heart.  Empowering women involves challenging and breaking stereotypes, societal norms, and biases that limit women’s potential and restrict their opportunities for growth and development. I come from a country where women go through a lot and they don’t even realize it because it’s so normal for them, but I want to empower every woman to feel confident, believe in their abilities and encourage them to pursue their goals and dreams.

Patricia Charles-Heathers, Ph.D., MPA

Chief Operating Officer - Friends of Youth

Born and raised on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, my father worked in law enforcement and my mom was a stay-at-home mom and seamstress. I was raised with the message that I could do and be anything I wanted if I applied myself.

WHAT LED YOU TO WORK WITH YOUTH IN THE NONPROFIT SPACE?

I have a passion for making life better for others. Local non-profit agencies play an integral role in ensuring the health and vibrancy of communities by providing easy access to services. Youth are our future and need to be supported and empowered so our future is brighter.

DESCRIBE YOUR APPROACH TO LEADERSHIP.

Relationship focused, strength-based and value-based. This entails hiring people for their expertise, ensuring they align with the mission, vision, and values of the organization. I’m a hands-on leader, always willing to roll up my sleeves and get involved where needed.

ANY ADVICE FOR WOMEN ASPIRING TO NONPROFIT LEADERSHIP ROLES?

Gain experience in a variety of settings to obtain a rounded approach to organizational work. Know your values, seek out organizations that are in sync with your values, and never compromise them. Know who you are, your priorities, and be solution focused and not crisis focused.

Jaya Ramesh, MA LMHC

Psychotherapist, co-author of recently released book, Parenting at the Intersections: Raising Neurodivergent Children of Color

As a seasoned facilitator she provides support groups for parents and families and supports organizations in building anti-oppressive culture. Jaya is married with two kids and an aussiedoodle.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK?

When my child was diagnosed with ADHD, I looked to books and resources for support but found they did not address our experiences as a family with intersectional identities. The advice was not necessarily unhelpful but something about them left me unsatisfied. I did not feel seen in the complexities of our experiences as immigrant, Indian, neurodivergent parents in these resources.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE THAT READERS OF YOUR BOOK COME AWAY WITH?

We want parents at the intersections to know that:

• Parenting amidst systems of oppression is a Herculean task.

• You and your children matter and deserve goodness.

• You know how to love your child well.

• You are not alone in raising your child/ren, even if it may feel that way. There is a community out there who sees and gets your experience. You deserve that support.

• We invite parents into a Parenting Love Ethic which starts with treating ourselves with gentle care so we can extend the same to our children.

Priya Saaral, LICSW, RPT-S

Mother, play therapist, and co-author of recently released book, Parenting at the Intersections: Raising

Neurodivergent Children of Color

Priya feels lucky to live and run her practice ‘Play It  Out!’ in Kirkland where she specializes in supporting the emotional wellbeing of neurodivergent and BIPOC children and parents.

WHAT

INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK?

I was once a child at the intersection when there wasn’t much science and awareness about neurodivergence, and I struggled as a misfit within external systems that accepted only one version of a child: Well-behaved, obedient, and excelling. My parents being first generation immigrants were pressured to value this single version prized by society, and the pressure affected me. Writing this book was like writing a love letter to my younger self, assuring her that her struggles were valid.

WHAT

DO YOU HOPE THAT READERS OF YOUR BOOK COME AWAY WITH?

We want non-BIPOC/ND parents and professionals reading to know:

• You have immense opportunity and power to make this world an affirming place for children and parents at the intersections.

• Even with good intentions, you can unknowingly create harm. Treat yourself with gentleness and compassion as you navigate mistakes - they will happen!

• Know and trust that all parents - especially those at the intersections - know their children best and have the wisdom within for solutions.

Jennifer Schauer

45-year-old mom, wife, and Nurse Practitioner ran 50 marathons - one in each state

I started running long distances in middle school in Ohio, and my high school nickname was “Machine,” because I never got tired.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO SET SUCH AN AUDACIOUS GOAL?

Post-high school, I trained for the Columbus Marathon to keep running without the demands of being on a team. I did quite well and LOVED it. The following year, I did Columbus again and qualified for the Boston Marathon. In Boston I saw a few “50 State Marathon” t-shirts; I’ve always loved traveling, so combining my two passions and visiting every state while staying fit was the perfect goal. Running a marathon is an amazing way to see a city!

YOU ACCOMPLISHED YOUR GOAL THIS MARCH IN HAWAII, HOW DO YOU FEEL?

It’s surreal. It has been part of my life for 33 years - it’s just what I do. It’s CRAZY and AMAZING! There are a few more marathons I’d like to do, but I’m excited about focusing on some new fitness goals.

I have so many emotions: Nostalgia, relief, happiness, grateful, blessed, accomplished, and excitement for what is next. After a goal that big, there’s got to be something new to focus on.

Spotlight on Kirkland Chamber’s Latest Addition

The Kirkland Chamber of Commerce leadership team grows with Jessica Hoover, their new Executive Director.

WHAT LED YOU TO BECOME EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE KIRKLAND CHAMBER?

In my previous role, I was a Vice President for a regional chamber of commerce and saw the impact a chamber could make on a community. When I was applying to this role, I was looking for an organization that had a strong balance of advocacy for businesses and opportunities for small businesses to get engaged. I was impressed by the Greater Kirkland Chamber of Commerce’s ability to be innovative and support our business community. You truly see that with their response to COVID-19 and providing small business grants as well as our innovation with our Fashion Show that allows our retailers, hair stylists and makeup artists the opportunity to showcase their talents. I wanted the opportunity to be a part of an organization that cares about the growth of the business communities.  And  as a bonus, I am so grateful to be in Kirkland; this city is vibrant and beautiful, and I am lucky to be a part of the growing community.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON AT THE KIRKLAND CHAMBER?

We are currently working on our Legislative Agenda and what type of legislation we’d like to advocate for. Additionally, we are looking for new ways to engage our members, giving them the flexibility to attend events or choose other avenues for using their chamber membership. We are excited about this year, and it’s a great time to become a member of the Greater Kirkland Chamber of Commerce.

WHAT PROGRAMS ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT?

I am excited about our Annual Gala, “Come Glow with Us,” where the proceeds will support the Kirkland Chamber Foundation’s mission. Our gala provides us with the resources to create programs for Youth Entrepreneurship, Youth Leadership Development, DEIA initiatives, and Small Business Education. Our programmatic work with Lake Washington School District is one of my favorite opportunities with this organization.
