They say that having a baby is both the hardest and best thing that you’ll ever do. Well, I’d like to introduce you to our baby, Jordan River City Lifestyle.
Jordan River City Lifestyle is more than just a magazine—it's a celebration of everything that makes our corner of the world such a great place to live. From the business park to the baseball field, from the lake to the living room, we celebrate the people and businesses that make this community home.
Every issue will be filled with familiar faces, recognizable places, and personal stories that will both warm your heart and inspire your mind. So come back every month to see what’s new! You never know when you’ll see your neighbor, your dentist, your barista, or even yourself in these pages.
Each month we follow a theme, and this month we’re focusing on the Jordan River community’s unique style. As you read, remember that style isn’t just a matter of decor or fashion. It also includes how we carry ourselves, how we treat each other, and especially how we approach life.
That’s why, this month we are featuring two people from the community who approach style from different angles. Danny Jewkes from Pimp My Piano expresses his style by making old things new again, and by giving musical heirlooms new life. On the other hand, Ben Brown’s style is expressed on a more collective scale. He’s helping develop a generation of comedians who can help us to see the humor in everyday situations and save us all one laugh at a time.
So take a deep breath, put away the screen, and relax with the pages of your community’s own luxury lifestyle publication. Welcome home to Jordan River City Lifestyle

BEN BROWN IS HEALING THE WORLD WITH COMEDY
“It’s a dojo, not a deathmatch,” Ben Brown says.
Ben’s talking about Comedy Rumble, a high-energy, bracket-style stand-up comedy competition where eight comedians face off, each getting one minute to win over the audience and advance to the next round.
Comedy Rumble was born out of Ben’s desire to provide a platform for new, hungry comedians to refine their work. “We’re

going there to practice to develop our craft,” he says, “recognizing that we’re not there yet.”
But its purpose runs deeper than that. Ben believes comedy has the power to heal the world.
“As a society, we have a lot to deal with,” Ben says. His solution? Humor. “It helps you see the world in a softer, gentler way.”
That was certainly true for Ben growing up. As a child in small-town Wyoming, he lived in a restrictive, isolated compound. “I liked laughing,” Ben remembers. “And I noticed that it was a way to sort of dissolve some of the tension that existed in my world.”
Before he left that world to become a lawyer, he didn’t even know what stand-up was. But once he found out, he left behind his upbringing to follow that calling.
“I decided… this is what I want to do with this life that I have,” Ben says, “and I want to do it in a way that is connected to my values as a person and that is a gift to the wider community.”
In January 2024, Ben hosted an open mic night at Wise Guys. He noticed something: every comic, no matter how funny they were, received the same amount of stage time. “A show is about collectively building energy together,” he says. “If somebody gets up and isn’t funny for three
“MAKING LIGHT LITERALLY JUST MEANS BRINGING
INTO DARKNESS”
minutes, that will kill the room.” In the first 30 seconds of each set, Ben says, the audience decides whether or not they’ll tune in for the rest.
“The audience needs to feel that connection to the heart,” he explains. “If you feel that connection to the heart, and you feel safe, you’ve agreed to laugh” for the rest of the set.
At the same time, Ben remembered his time as a young comedian without much stage time. He says you can’t just practice lines in a closet. “You have to have that feedback from the crowd.”
Combining this thought with the recollection of his bracket-style college debate
team, Ben created Comedy Rumble, a place for comedians to practice their craft while giving the audience a show guaranteed to keep their attention.
And that energy is catching on. In its first year, Comedy Rumble hosted more than 50 shows, giving stage time to more than 300 new comedians.
And it’s not slowing down.
With regular shows already happening in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas, Ben has his sights set on more. “I see this as a national project,” he says. “It’s going to grow into a rumble in every major city with a national championship.” Most recently, Comedy Rumble came to Jordan Landing in September, and
continues every Friday. Soon, it’ll reach Seattle, Phoenix, and Denver.
Ben says people often look down on those who make light of things, but he sees it differently. “Making light literally means bringing light into darkness,” Ben says. “That’s what we’re doing… We do have serious problems to solve. But if we can take those problems a little less seriously, we can all breathe and relax. And if we can all breathe and relax, we can actually connect with other humans.”
Comedy Rumble is designed to give the audience that connection while allowing comedians to sharpen their superpower of humor.
When the world paused in 2020, Danny Jewkes pressed play on something new.
After losing his job teaching Spanish, Danny says, “It was learn this business, or who knows?”
The business in question is one he’d grown up adjacent to but never truly explored. “My dad was a piano technician growing up,” he says. “I helped him move a lot of pianos when I was a kid, but I never asked him about tuning or anything like that.”
But 2020 came with the decision to follow in his father’s footsteps. “My dad had all this knowledge, so I started asking him questions,” Danny says. After learning to tune pianos from his dad, he put up some ads. Tom Zimmerman, the owner of Utah Pianos, called Danny and asked how he’d like to tune all the pianos in his shop.
What started as a tuning job turned into a valuable mentorship. “He ended up teaching me how to tune, how to regulate, how to repair,” Danny says. But now, Danny doesn’t just repair pianos. He transforms them with amazing paint jobs.

That idea was born from the 2008 recession. Danny recalls his father started to paint pianos around that time. “In order to sell pianos during that recession, he learned that if he doesn’t make it stand out like a sore thumb, it’s not going.” So, Danny’s dad asked his wife for her insight, since she was an artist. “He used her expertise as an artist to help guide him,” Danny says. “And I think a bit of that’s in me. I like to have fun with it.”
That’s why when Danny Jewkes launched his business, Danny Jewkes Piano Company, he gave it a bold nickname: Pimp My Piano. Danny says it’s a nod to the early 2000s TV show Pimp My Ride, where beat-up cars became show-stopping masterpieces. “That’s what I’m doing,” Danny says. “You get to see something transform from junk into art.”
Although he gives some pianos more modest paint jobs—the standard whites and blacks and browns of your typical household piano—Danny likes to branch out when he can. From seafoam greens and deep blues to wine reds and graffiti texture. “I like to have fun with it and make it stand out,” he says. And they sell. “They usually disappear quickly.”
Danny’s workshop is crowded with pianos in every stage of transformation. Whether it’s a 100-yearold family heirloom or a quirky secondhand piano someone messaged
him on TikTok about, every instrument gets the care and detail it deserves.
And business is booming. “I feel like a dude with eight arms,” he says. “It’s nonstop. People need me daily.” For a long time, Danny handled everything on his own: sales, deliveries, tuning, refinishing, painting, social media, and everything else that goes into running a business. “But I’ve overcome that pain of trying to do it all myself.”
With a couple of employees helping out with the business now, Danny finally has a bit more time to himself. But beyond that, what’s mattered even more to him is how the business has brought his family together.
“We finally have a relationship now,” he says of his dad. “We connect real well now, like we never have before. So I’m very grateful for that.”
And that piano legacy goes both ways. Danny’s son, Tae, also became a core part of the business before leaving on a two-year service trip to Washington. Danny taught Tae everything he knows. “He could be running this whole business by himself if he wanted to,” he says. “I have no words to describe how proud I am.”
Father and son tackled everything together. Although Danny trained Tae, he also learned from him. “He’s just full of light and joy,” Danny says. “It’s just a pleasure to be with him and have him around.”
He says Tae brought a beautiful culture to the workplace. After each job, he’d look at Danny and say, “Good job, Dad.” With emotion in his eyes, Danny says he tries to pass that on to his employees now. “Even if it’s just a text: ‘Hey, good job.’” He says he’s proud to call Tae his son. “I like to keep that aspect of culture that he brought, you know, keep that around while he’s not here, the best I can.”
“If he goes on to do something else,” Danny says, “I’ll always cherish getting to work with him.”
Even Danny’s daughter, Hani, though not directly involved in the business, plays a role in it. She loves horses. “A lot of this piano business is for that,” he laughs. “Gotta save my pennies for that ranch.”
With his growing workload, Danny is trying to find a good worklife balance. “I can’t wait to go camping,” he says. “I like to spend a lot of time outdoors.”
Still, even as he dreams of snowy slopes to snowboard and remote reservoirs to fish in, Danny finds deep satisfaction in his work. “I like helping people with their pianos,” he says. “It’s a piece of junk in the beginning, but slowly, hour after hour, I might have a piece of junk concert-ready in like five hours. And I’m proud of that.” He pauses, then adds, “And I get to play it while I fix it.”
What started as a forced career change has become something so much more for Danny. It’s become a way to connect with both his father and son, and a way to help others’ lives become more beautiful along the way. “This is art in itself,” he says. “Then someone plays on it… and you’re able to make more art with it.”
“I just want to get your piano back in its best shape possible,” Danny says. “I guess that’s my business model.”

Originally from Washington, where it’s gloomy most of the year, Mike loves sunny South Jordan. Aside from the climate, the community is great too.
“I like to putter around my garage,” Mike says. “I like to work with my hands.” Whenever he gets the chance, he enjoys remodeling camp trailers.
Mike’s Favorite Restaurant
Sukihana, Mike’s favorite restaurant, is just across the lake from him. He highly recommends the Honey Girl roll, a delicious combination of tempura shrimp, crab, and cream cheese.
When Mike was 16, his hairstylist asked if he wanted to be a hair model. Two months later, he got a book in the mail. “There I was on page 80, in all my glory.”
Favorite Vacation
Mike loves to travel whenever he gets the chance. “For some reason, I’ve been fascinated with Spain since I was a little boy,” Mike says. When he finally went, it was a dream come true.
Feast your way into fall by making this delicious Italian-style pizza, adapted from a Serious Eats recipe. Try adding toppings like salami or serrano peppers to bring this pizza to the next level.
ingredients:
PIZZA DOUGH INGREDIENTS:
• 545 grams (about 4 ½ cups) all-purpose flour
• 22 grams (about 3 tablespoons) vital wheat gluten
• 0.3 ounces (about 2 ¼ teaspoons) kosher salt
• 0.2 ounces (about 1 teaspoon) instant yeast
• 0.2 ounces (about 2 teaspoons) white sugar
• 12 ounces water (1 ½ cups) water
Feast Your Way Into Fall
TOPPINGS INGREDIENTS:
• 1 14-ounce can whole peeled San Marzano tomatoes
• 12 ounces (little less than a pound) highmoisture mozzarella block
• 6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
• Handful fresh basil leaves
• Kosher salt
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ABI FALIN HORSPOOL
directions:
Step 1. In a stand mixer, whisk together all dry dough ingredients. Add water and knead on low until just combined. Let the dough rest for 10 minutes, then knead on low for another 10 minutes until cohesive dough forms that only lightly sticks to the bottom of the bowl as it kneads. Add flour 1 tablespoon at a time if needed.
Step 2. Transfer dough to a floured surface. Divide dough into 6 equal pieces and shape into balls using floured hands. Place each in a separate container
coated with nonstick cooking spray or olive oil. Cover each bowl tightly and refrigerate for at least 8 to 72 hours. The dough should rise to approximately double its size. (If you want to save any for another day, you can move those dough balls to the freezer after allowing them to rise in the fridge.)
Step 3. Remove the dough from the fridge (or the freezer). Let dough balls rise at room temperature in containers for 2 to 3 hours until doubled in volume.
Step 4. Pass the tomatoes through a fine-mesh strainer, breaking up tomatoes with your fingers to squeeze out as much excess juice as possible. Transfer tomatoes to blender with ½ teaspoon kosher salt and blend until mixture is smooth. Set aside.
Step 5. Put a double layer of paper towels on a clean plate. Cut mozzarella into ½ inch chunks and place on the plate. Put another layer of paper towels or kitchen towel on top of the cheese and stack another plate on top of it. Let excess water drain from cheese for 10 minutes.
Step 6. Position oven rack so skillet will fit close to broiler. Preheat broiler to high. Place skillet on stovetop and heat over high heat until it reaches a temperature of 450–550ºF.
Step 7. Bring extra flour, tomato sauce, drained cheese, risen pizza dough, olive oil, and kosher salt near the stovetop.
Step 8. Lightly coat 1 ball of dough with flour, dusting off excess. Stretch dough into 10-inch
circle on a lightly floured surface, keeping the outer 1-inch edge slightly thicker for a crust. Do this by placing the dough on the surface and dimpling with fingers, flipping once. Pick up dough and rotate it as you stretch the dough. Place back on the work surface as needed to stretch the edge out.
Step 9. Dust skillet lightly with flour and transfer stretched pizza dough to the skillet. Quickly spread about 2 tablespoons of sauce over the dough, leaving the crust with no sauce. Top with 1/6 of your cheese. Sprinkle kosher salt and drizzle 1 tablespoon olive oil over pizza.
Step 10. When the bottom is beginning to char, transfer skillet to broiler and cook until pizza is puffy and charred in some spots (between 90 seconds and 4 minutes, depending on your broiler’s strength). 11. Remove from oven and transfer pizza to a plate. Top with fresh basil and serve immediately. Repeat steps 8 through 10 to bake remaining pizzas.

There’s something deeply satisfying about a well-made sandwich—especially when it comes together with minimal effort but delivers big on flavor. As the season changes and appetites grow heartier, fall is the perfect time to get creative with ingredients tucked between slices of crusty bread or buttery rolls. Whether you’re looking to upgrade your lunch routine, enjoy comforting flavors and bold textures, or impress guests with a no-fuss meal, these easy-to-make sandwiches strike the perfect balance between simple and sensational.
INGREDIENTS
• 2 slices crusty bread (sourdough, ciabatta, French bread)
• 6 oz roast beef
• 2 slices provolone cheese
• 2 tbsp butter (for toasting)
INSTRUCTIONS
• 2 ½ tbsp mayonnaise
• 1 tbsp horseradish sauce
• 1 tsp Dijon mustard
• Arugula
• Cherry tomato
• Caramelized onions
Toast the bread. Butter one side of each slice and toast in a skillet until golden. Heat roast beef briefly in a pan. To make the spread, mix mayo, horseradish sauce, and Dijon. Spread on the toasted bread. Layer roast beef, cheese, and broil briefly to melt. Add arugula, tomato, and caramelized onions if using. Top with the second slice of bread.
INGREDIENTS
• 1 grilled chicken breast
• 2 slices pepper jack cheese
• 2 slices cooked bacon
• 1 tbsp fruit jam (fig, raspberry, or jalapeño recommended)
INSTRUCTIONS
• A handful of fresh arugula
• 3–4 cherry tomatoes (halved)
• 1 tbsp garlic aioli
• 1 brioche bun (toasted)
Lightly butter the inside of the bun and toast in a skillet or oven until golden brown. Spread a layer of garlic aioli on the bottom bun. Add the sliced grilled chicken breast. Place the pepper jack cheese over the hot chicken to slightly melt it. Layer on the crispy bacon slices. Add halved cherry tomatoes and a small handful of arugula. Spread the jam on the top bun. Enjoy!
INGREDIENTS
• 3 oz goat cheese
• Fresh arugula
• ¼ cup caramelized onions
• 1 pear, thinly sliced
• Honey, to taste
INSTRUCTIONS
• Butter for toasting the bread
• Rotisserie chicken breast thinly sliced
• Sourdough bread, buttered (optional)

The Perfect Recipe For Some Autumn Comfort
Ingredients:
• 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
• 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 1 teaspoon nutmeg
• 1/2 teaspoon ginger
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 1/2 cups canned pumpkin
• 1 1/2 cups sugar
• 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1/2 cup vegetable oil or canola oil
• 1/2 cup melted butter
• 2 eggs
Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
2. In a mixing bowl, add the flour, baking soda and baking powder, spices, and salt. Set aside.
3. Combine the oil, butter, and vanilla in a liquid measuring cup.
4. In a mixing bowl (with a paddle attachment), beat the pumpkin, sugar, and eggs until combined.
5. Turn the mixer to low and slowly add the liquid ingredients. Let this process take about 1 to 2 minutes so the mixture becomes light and fluffy.
6. Using a spatula, fold the dry ingredients into the wet and slowly fold until the ingredients are blended.
7. Prepare a 10 x 5 loaf pan by buttering it really well and then adding a strip of parchment paper to the bottom and up the sides for easy removal.
8. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 1 hour. The bread will be fully risen in the center, like a loaf. Make sure it’s fully cooked and brown on the top otherwise it will fall in the middle once removed from the oven.
