Letter from the Editor EVERY SUMMER MY FAMILY COMES UP WITH A BUCKET LIST OF ACTIVITIES THAT WE WANT TO DO OVER OUR THREE-MONTH BREAK FROM SCHOOL. The kids each add their favorite activities, and invariably we always have several camps to work around. An all-time favorite to add to the list every year is visiting cousins that live out of state. I love that they place a high priority on visiting extended family and that they have created bonds with cousins that I know from personal experience will be cherished, lifelong friends. Some of my favorite childhood memories involve spending summer weekends with cousins. Sometimes it was a simple sleepover where we would spend the majority of our time coming up with performances of all kinds to present to anyone willing to watch, and other times it was a weekend spent at our family lake cabin (which "cabin" is a generous word to use). Our lake weekends were filled with rafting and swimming, playing volleyball and croquet, going on walks or driving into town for ice cream, and sitting around a campfire at night, telling stories or sharing embarrassing moments. Those lake weekend memories are among my most favorite life moments.

Still to this day, when I see my cousins, we sometimes reminisce about those cherished memories that we made during the summers of our childhood. I am so thankful for those times, and it is such a good reminder to me of how sometimes the simplest things can

SOMETIMES THE ELEMENTS OF LIVING MERGE TOGETHER IN HARMONIOUS DESIGN FROM ALL ANGLES. Such is the case with the home of Bob Steer and Cindy Johnson. Each space is intricately planned with the goal of comfort, being one with nature and family. Their home in Mission Farms Estates is a shining example. Situated on approximately two acres, this 11-year-old 7,700-square-foot residence reflects their personalities impeccably. “We purchased this home a year ago and have done a number of internal renovations and some outside landscaping changes," Cindy says. "We purchased it for the lakes and ponds on the property, which we can see. Where else can you get farm-like, open space inside the 435 loop in Johnson County?” The two outdoor spaces on the main level give them the feeling of being outside on a farm or large property, yet still in the city. The larger area is close to their rock stream with views of the waters, while the other is quaint and intimate, featuring a fireplace and similar vistas. They plan to build a pool next summer.

“We like the neighborhood, and there are only 21 estate homes, so we can walk to Mission Farms restaurants for dinner in any season,” she says. “We have deer running through the property and geese year-round.” Liz Sain of Hampton Court Designs has been partnering with the design of their homes for more than 20 years. This is the fifth she has helped Cindy decorate. “Cindy is just a pleasure, and I am truly blessed that we have found each other,” Liz says. “I think that in this business if you can find wonderful people like Cindy to help then you've been blessed in your career." Family is a focal point for this couple. Bob is the CFO of Seaboard Corporation, where he has worked for 30 years, and Cindy is in her 21st year as vice president of client business management at American Century Investments.

“We have three boys, ages 25, 21 and 18. The 21-year-old is a senior in college, the 18-year-old recently graduated from Pembroke High School, and both boys will attend KU in the fall,” she says. Time will go on, and with it, beauty will surely continue to resonate within their hearts and homes.

If you give one person hope, you can change that person's life.” What started out as a small gesture of kindness toward those who have served our country has become a life-changing experience for the Duncans. "We miss Spencer every day, but the people he has brought into our lives continue to inspire us to do everything we can to help our veterans. We really just want to make it count.”

WHEN KERMIT DYER RETIRED FROM ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT, HE DECIDED TO TAKE UP WATERCOLOR PAINTING AND GUITAR TO KEEP HIS MIND ACTIVE AND ENGAGED. Even though he now owns several guitars, the guitar seems to be a “bridge too far” for him to master. The watercolors—well, he will leave that up to you to decide. His passion is painting military aircraft with an emphasis on those from World War II. In

each veteran, he learned just how brave the young men and women were and the great responsibilities they were given when many were not much more than teenagers. "I think I am drawn to art that honors our veterans because my experiences with World War II were through the eyes
of a small boy," Kermit says. "We practiced 'blackouts' and watched 'America Goes to War' newsreels at the movies filled with the exploits of our fighting men. Everyone was involved in the war effort in some small way as we rationed items and saved tinfoil off gum wrappers, cooking grease and scrap metal." Kermit remembers that people believed in our country and what we were doing as a nation. He still remembers saying the Pledge of Allegiance with his hand over his heart facing the flag, and all of the kids brought pennies, nickels and dimes to school to buy War Savings Stamps. Their goal was to fill a book with $18.75 in stamps in the hopes to purchase a War Bond. "What I remember most are the World War II aircraft trading cards that came in packages of Wings Cigarettes," Kermit says. "My parents did not smoke Wings Cigarettes, so I never had a trading card of my own. I could only envy the kids on the playground who did." So now he paints them. These paintings include watercolors of the last living member of the “Doolittle Tokyo Raiders” and the last P-38 World War II ace. Also included in his portfolio are paintings of Tuskegee Airmen who fought for victory in battle and victory at home against inequality, Women Airforce Service Pilots from World War II and a Hall of Fame helicopter pilot who was shot down 16 times in Vietnam. He has painted many others, each a hero in their own right. "My wife, Stella, and I use the proceeds from my art to raise money for PHOTOGRAPHY PAUL VERSLUIS

When you are a parent or caregiver to a child with special needs, navigating the system alone is a challenge. As hard as you try to do everything right, sometimes a small mistake can have lasting repercussions. In this instance, a friend set up an account for her daughter and paid a $25 fee to get the account started. She then transferred $2,000 into the account, the legal limit allowed in her daughter’s case, so they could manage her finances from this account. She was devastated to find out that the $25 had been reported as causing her daughter’s account to exceed her limit and therefore lose her benefits. When it comes to managing finances that are impacted by special needs, it can be helpful to have an overview of the financial and legal concerns to consider. Naming a Trustee A trustee will control the child’s money in order to make responsible decisions and distributions to meet their living expenses and needs. This role can be filled by a parent or family member, trusted friend, or an institution. Because a trustee must keep up on trust laws, you may consider a co-trustee or a trust protector for their legal skills and knowledge.
Setting Up a Special Needs Trust A Special Needs Trust allows a child to receive money, gifts, inheritance or other assets while still maintaining their government benefits. The child should never directly receive assets because staying under the legal limit of personal assets is essential to protecting their benefits status. Writing a Will In the absence of a Will, a probate judge could name your child with special needs as the beneficiary to your estate. An attorney can help you develop a Will that leaves your assets to the child’s Special Needs Trust so their benefits are not lost or compromised. Considering an ABLE Account Before ABLE accounts, individuals with special needs had difficulty saving due to the $2,000 asset restrictions placed upon them, so money wasn’t always available for additional costs that weren’t covered by their benefits. Now, with restrictions, money can be saved into an ABLE account and used for qualified disability expenses. It can take a large village to raise a child, and an even bigger village to raise a child with special needs. By having people on your team who can walk with you through the maze of benefits and financial considerations, share ideas and resources, and talk to you about challenges other parents have overcome, it could help reduce some of the headaches and mistakes that pop up along the way.
