LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy new year, friends

January 2022 PUBLISHER

Jim Newman | jnewman@citylifestyle.com SENIOR ACCOUNT MANAGER

Karyn Slovin | karyn.slovin@citylifestyle.com

Do you love our new cover design as much as we do? Our parent company, Lifestyle Publications, is now City Lifestyle. So, you'll see Johns Creek City Lifestyle magazine gracing your mailboxes from now on! While print continues to drive our business, our digital platform at CityLifestyle.com is flourishing. Just see how we've grown. This cover is from our launch in December of 2016! And, you knew I was going to ask about your resolutions! I mean, it's a new year and this is amnesty month. We can forget about last year's lost opportunities and snafus and jump into a fresh new year, a wide-open frontier. I'm perfectly happy to lose last year's baggage and start a healthier new year, chock full of hopes and dreams. Our book editor Rhiannon Johnson suggested two good books to give (or receive) this month to help. Rhiannon has been writing for us since we first started publishing! I Didn't Do the Thing Today, Letting Go of Productivity Guilt by Madeleine Dore is the inspiring call to take productivity off its pedestal. We love that! She says that by dismantling our comparison to others, aspirational routines, and the unrealistic notions of what can be done in a day, we can finally embrace the joyful messiness and unpredictability of life. I'll have what she's having! Enjoy this issue, find inspiration and let me know what you think of the new page designs!

Why Juice Bars Are Here to Stay ARTICLE BY LISA MARTINEZ PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

As with most trends, the idea of juicing began when we started seeing celebrities pictured with green drinks on their daily commute to somewhere that must be fabulous. What was that drink and how can I get one? Turns out, the next health trend was the start of juicing: squeezing the pulp out of fruits and vegetables and drinking the juice. This was initially to help those celebs with busy schedules get more vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables while on-the-go, and (of course) lose weight. Juice bars sprang up all over the country and thus the juice trend was created. Many who jumped on the juice train did so swiftly and without much regard to the ‘what or why’. It didn’t matter what the juice looked or tasted like. In fact, if it didn’t taste good, it must be better for you.

Research shows that much of our overall health can be largely attributed to the health of our gut microbiome (gut health), the ability to resist infection and remove toxins from our bodies (immunity), and the internal strength to repair cells and tissues (protein intake).

The evidence to support eating more fruits and vegetables is solid. Research shows that much of our overall health can be largely attributed to the health of our gut microbiome (gut health), the ability to resist infection and remove toxins from our bodies (immunity), and the internal strength to repair cells and tissues (protein intake). Sounds like a lot, but the answer is simple: increase your fruits and vegetables. But how? We are a nation of busy people that barely have time to sit down and eat a meal (a conversation for another day), much less concern ourselves with the overall nutritional content. This is where juices and smoothies can be a great solution when combined with an overall healthier diet. Gut Health - Starting your day with something fresh and nutrient-rich can brighten your mood and begin the daily process to a healthier gut. The key is to keep the sugar content low. Even though fruits and vegetables like beets, carrot and apples have amazing nutritional properties, they have a high sugar content. They should be

16

consumed, but in moderation. So think about green vegetables (celery, spinach, kale, and cucumber) and mix them together with small amounts of those sweeter fruits and vegetables like carrots, beets, apples, and pineapple. Then add a touch of refreshing ginger and lemon to help with inflammation, risk of infection, to inhibit the grown of bacteria, and much more. Immunity - To help your body fight infection and keep it young, this is where some of those sweeter vegetables take center stage. Beets, oranges, apples, and carrots are packed with nutrition, like vitamin A, B6, C, potassium and folic acid that helps strengthen our heart, support blood pressure, maintain good brain function, and give us natural bursts of energy. Great for athletes and the afternoon pick me up! Protein Boost - If more protein for sustained energy is your goal (like a meal replacement), adding a small scoop of a plant-based protein powder will help fill you up until you are ready for that dinner that includes a lean healthy protein and raw or roasted vegetables.

Innovati ve Medical W EIGH T L O S S P ROGR A M P REMIER S IN JOHN S CREEK

The data is in. According to recent statistics published by the CDC, over 42% of American adults, or nearly one out of every two people, are considered obese. Alarmingly, overweight and obesity prevalence has been rapidly increasing for more than two decades, continuing to climb amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s important to note that undesired weight gain and obesity are associated with the development of a myriad of health complications, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, dyslipidemia, impairments in joint health, weakened immune systems, and depression. “Clearly, traditional attempts at weight loss and healthy weight management are failing,” says Dr. Zachary Grunewald, Ph.D., RDN, Bariatric Program Coordinator at Emory Johns Creek Hospital. “Despite an overabundance of food in our environment and increased options for home fitness training during the pandemic, our nation remains hungrier and more overweight than ever.” In fact, recent polling found that 61% of respondents self-reported gaining weight since March of 2020. Luckily, an emerging and energetic group of healthcare professionals at Emory Johns Creek Hospital have designed a new medically-supervised weight loss program to help tackle our nation’s expanding waistline and hunger crisis. A NOVEL SOLUTION Under the direction of obesity and weight management specialists Dr. David Prologo, MD, FSIR, ABOM-D, and Dr. Grunewald, the new medical weight loss program features the use of a novel, minimally-invasive weight loss procedure pioneered by Dr. Prologo. The procedure involves the use of computer tomography (CT)-guided cryoablation, in which a small needle is inserted into the patient’s back and positioned close to the

20

F E AT U R E | HEALTH + WELLNE S S

stomach’s vagus nerve. The nerve is then "frozen" to temporarily stop hunger signals sent from the stomach to the brain. The end result is the reduction of appetite (hunger) for patients trying to restrict their calories for weight loss. Decreased hunger allows patients to reduce calories and increase activity, ultimately gaining momentum toward a healthy lifestyle. Cryoablation is quick – it takes only about 30 minutes and patients leave with just a small bandage. “The idea is that by temporarily decreasing hunger signals to the brain, the procedure allows patients to focus more on exercise and lifestyle changes, while worrying less about being hungry,” says Dr. Prologo. Combining the procedure with a comprehensive, individualized lifestyle counseling program focused on nutrition and fitness education, led by world-class Emory registered dietitian-nutritionists and physical therapists, will help lead more patients to success. Program participants will also receive a rapid metabolic and body composition screening to assess glucose levels, Hemoglobin A1c, lipid panels, and body fat percentage. Drs. Prologo and Grunewald believe that this unique, 8-month program will be a winning strategy to help individuals lose weight and keep it off for good. “This program is unlike any other weight loss intervention. It enables us to affect long-term dietary and lifestyle changes while the patient’s hunger is temporarily suppressed,” says Dr. Grunewald. “During this time, we are able to retrain patients on how to eat and exercise for a well-balanced, healthy lifestyle under direct medical supervision.” Prospective patients can expect to receive up to six individualized nutrition consultations, multiple exercise training sessions, and rapid metabolic testing at baseline and again after 6 months. The Emory Johns Creek Hospital medical team is excited to empower individuals to live a healthier new lifestyle with sustained weight loss. The cryoablation procedure and medical weight loss program will premier in the Johns Creek community in 2022.

COACH MARY BYRNE DESING Assistant Athletic Director, Varsity Girls Soccer Head Coach, Director of Football Operations, Boys Lacrosse Strength and Conditioning, Johns Creek High School WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO SNACKS? I enjoy smoothies, trail mix, goldfish, rice cakes, fruit, and veggies and dip. I don’t usually eat before games as a coach, but as a player I used to eat sandwiches.

YOU ARE BUSY! A typical week, once season is in full swing, is practice on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with games on Tuesdays and Fridays. During preseason we practice five days a week. AROUND JOHNS CREEK I like Poke Bowl, Subway, Patio, Egg Harbor and Panera. Also, for a special meal I like Kani house, as I love sushi and hibachi.

WORKING WITH TEENS HAS TO BE AS CHALLENGING AS IT IS REWARDING. WHAT MOTIVATES YOUR ATHLETES AND HOW DO YOU STAY POSITIVE? Working with teens is definitely an experience. Teenagers keep me on my toes, as I never know what they are going to do next or what is going to come out of their mouths. They also will give you everything they have, lay it all on the line, and put their trust in you. Building relationship with these athletes outside of the field is what keeps me going and makes all the days worth it. Coaching is exhausting and can be very stressful, but when you see the athletes succeed and when you see the smiles, tears, and get the hugs it makes everything worth it. I love that even once my athletes graduate we can stay connected and they still want to get together for lunch on breaks. Teams have their ups and downs. As a coach you experience all of the emotions on a roller coaster with your athletes, but when they say thank you and come to you for advice - or honestly anything and everything - it makes all those long hours and stress worth it, because you know you are making a difference. When an athlete hugs me and says thank you or how important I am to them, it makes my heart melt and there is no feeling in the world like it.

WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO SNACKS? Peanuts, cashews and occasionally peanut M & Ms. YOU ARE BUSY! We practice daily after school for the basketball season. Practices are usually 90 minutes - 2 hours in length. Our weekly schedule, once we are in season, is practice daily, with games on Fridays and occasional Saturday conditioning or games. ENJOYING JOHNS CREEK I like Tropical Smoothie Cafe for smoothies. I enjoy the Patio, Jersey Mikes and Subway for sandwiches. My family and I enjoy Lazy Dog and Mellow Mushroom for dinners, but my childrens' favorite restaurant is Chili’s!

WORKING WITH TEENS HAS TO BE AS CHALLENGING AS IT IS REWARDING. WHAT MOTIVATES YOUR ATHLETES AND HOW DO YOU STAY POSITIVE? I wish I knew what motivates them. It is always a moving target with what will inspire or motivate a student-athlete to strive for success. I enjoy the process of getting to know each one of my athletes and learning what they respond to and how to help them be successful. One of the many joys we get as coaches is when you see that player achieve something and you know how hard they have worked for it. Seeing players accomplish more than they thought they could and watching a team grow together to accomplish something is the most rewarding experience. For me it is easy to stay positive. We are blessed to be able to play a sport with teammates and have an opportunity to grow as individuals and learn about giving up your own ambitions to achieve something greater. There are definitely days when it is more challenging because it feels like everything is going wrong or maybe we aren't seeing the success we want. However, when you keep in mind the process of what we are doing, it allows you to keep it in perspective and not get caught up in results. Celebrating the daily successes and growth helps us stay focused and driven toward our ultimate goals.

escape and explore in blowing rock Exploring the nearby North Carolina mountain towns of Banner Elk and Blowing Rock with a stay at The Chetola Resort is just the balm your family needs as the rush of the holidays subsides and the new year stretches out in front of us like a blank canvas. And, with temperatures dipping down a bit more than here in Johns Creek, you might get some snow on your visit. Stop in Banner Elk for the night and dine at Stonewalls where the owners, Scott Garland and chef Tim Heschke, offer up a chef-driven menu and patio dining. Stay at Perry House Bed & Breakfast where host Mike Dunn will share favorite hiking destinations, like Grandfather Mountain. A unit of the United Nations’ Southern Appalachian Man and Biosphere Reserve, the mountain is estimated to be 300 million years old. I headed to The Black Rock Nature Trail, parking at the Hiker’s Parking Area with a wide view of dramatic peaks. The Chetola Resort is a lovely property, with condos and inn rooms, fire pits, dining options and sports galore. It's a pleasant walk to downtown Blowing Rock, for shopping and happy hour. Back at the resort, wander the adjoining 3,600-acre Moses Cone Park.

A few hours on the Watauga River with Orvis-endorsed guide Dustin Coffey was rewarding. My husband caught a Southern Slam (brown, bow and brookie) in a quiet pool while I clambered up the river and found a few brown and rainbow trout willing to put up a fight. Chetola's Sporting Reserve offers a 5-stand clay station, 13 station sporting clay course, and ranges that dot the 67 acres of rural rolling terrain, towering pines, red maples, and mighty oaks. I Didn’t Do the Thing Today: Letting Go of Productivity Guilt by Madeleine Dore Do you struggle to complete a never-ending daily list of tasks? Wondering how other people seemed to have it all figured out, Madeleine Dore spent five years interviewing people she admired to uncover their secrets for being more productive, successful, and prolific. She learned there isn’t a perfect recipe for getting things done. The ideal routine that maximizes every minute of the day is a myth, and constantly holding ourselves to unattainable daily standards is simply exhausting us. Dore encourages us to stop comparing ourselves to others, to become more realistic about our expectations, and overcome our constant worry about wasted time. Letting go of your productivity guilt and embracing the unexpected creative moments that each day brings can broaden your definition of a day well spent, bringing deep connection and fulfillment.

From Basic to Breathtaking We’ve Got You Covered

Postcards: The Rise and Fall of the World’s First Social Network by Lydia Pyne In 1909 the United States Post Office was $17 million in debt ($483 million today). Two years later, the Post Office’s profit was $200,000 ($5.7 million today.) How? Postcards! The hundreds of millions of postcards Americans were sending during the Golden Age of Postcards (1905-1920) became a lifeline for the Post Office. Lydia Pyne takes readers on a global journey through revolutions, social movements, scientific and technological discoveries, and sentimental personal connections. This book also examines the details of postcards as the first worldwide social network. Postcards is a marvelous, in-depth analysis and thought-generating look into how a version of almost everything you see on your current digital social media networks was first produced, composed, and mailed as a postcard.
