Permission to Explore

We live in a world that values productivity and efficiency, where every moment seems to be mapped out and planned. I have to consciously remind myself that my value is not tied to only my productivity and to leave space for exploration to breathe new life into daily creation. We need room for discovery, for trying new things, for being a beginner and for simply being BORED — a modern, 5-letter word in a world of attention-grab bing social media and distractions. More often than not, it’s in those unplanned moments where the most impactful connections are made, memories are created, trust is built and our minds expand the notion of what is possible.

In 2007, I moved to France with a bike, backpack and a snowboard. I spent countless hours ambling through the Alps year round. Waking up on a Saturday and setting out on a 4-hour bike ride to Annecy just to grab a sandwich for lunch and head home was more common than not. With the Belledonne mountain range looming high above, no music and limited cell service, it was the perfect setting to simply be, knowing that a wrong turn, (or twenty!) would inevitably lead to a stunning mountain range I’d not yet visited. Getting “lost” is still my favorite way to escape, clear my mind and tap into unlocked potential.

In recent months, I’ve been reflecting on how our family spends time together. We’ve realized that our happiest moments often come when we step away from screens and routines. Our adventures don’t always involve grand trips—they could be as simple as playing a new board game on the patio, trying out a new trail or exploring a new part of town to find a quirky little café. But the premise is always the same: break the routine, try something new, embrace the unknown.

This issue is all about giving yourself permission to explore—whether it’s a spontaneous trip, a new hobby or simply making time for those unstructured moments with the people you love.

Let’s make space for the unexpected and the unexplored, and remember that it’s often in these moments that the richest connections are formed.

Happy exploring!

Proudly serving Indian Hill, Mariemont, Madeira, Montgomery, Terrace Park and the Kenwood/Blue Ash Business District

SUMMER ROAD TRIP

TRAVEL WITH WES MAPS OUT FOUR OUTDOOR DESTINATIONS WITHIN FOUR HOURS OF CINCINNATI

It’s road trip season! You don’t have to go far from home for an adventure to remember. Explore these four outdoor destinations, all within four hours of Cincinnati, as mapped out by travel expert Wes Mergard of Travel With Wes. Roll down the windows, turn up the tunes and buckle your seatbelts for summer fun that is well worth the drive.

Visit the scenic views of Cuyahoga Valley National Park near Cleveland, Ohio.
Red River Gorge, Kentucky features 29,000 acres of canyon.
“Chase waterfalls, explore caves, enjoy foliage and cap it all off with an afternoon of exploring Madison’s charming smalltown vibes.”

CLIFTY FALLS STATE PARK

1½ HOURS FROM CINCINNATI

Clifty Falls is tucked away along the Ohio River near Madison, Indiana. It makes a great weekend day trip destination. It’s the kind of place where you can chase waterfalls, explore caves, enjoy foliage and cap it all off with an afternoon of exploring Madison’s charming smalltown vibes. It’s one of my favorite spots in the area for photography!

There’s one main road that winds through the park, with incredibly easy access to most of the park’s best features. While there are a number of great hiking trails that wind through the park (over 15 miles of them), you can also see some of the park’s top attractions, like its namesake Clifty Falls or Little Clifty Falls, with short walks from nearby parking lots. Given the easy access to waterfalls and vista views, this is a family-friendly destination, especially for those with small children.

Clifty Falls is a great destination for all seasons, but for the best waterfall viewing experience, try to time your visit after we’ve had some rain, when the water flow will be the most powerful.

Clifty Falls State Park

Consider making a weekend of your visit. Clifty Inn is located within the park and offers beautiful views of the Ohio River. There’s also a campground available if spending the night outdoors is more your speed. CliftyFallsStatePark.com

Clifty Falls

Red River Gorge

RED RIVER GORGE 2 HOURS FROM CINCINNATI

Red River Gorge is south, just east of Lexington. I like this area because it checks all of the boxes when I’m looking to get lost in nature. It’s an easy drive with tons of great cabin options and lots to do.

My favorite hike on this list is the Auxier Ridge Trail. It’s about four miles roundtrip and the vista views of Courthouse Rock are unmatched. For the best experience at Auxier Ridge, head out for sunset. Be sure to pack a headlamp for the hike back. Don’t miss out on Natural Bridge–a short (but steep) hike will take you to the top, where you can enjoy incredible panoramic views. There’s also a chairlift to the top if that’s more your style.

Discover cave kayaking, rock climbing, late-night bonfires, zip lining and so much more awaiting you at The Gorge! RedRiverGorge.com

Hocking Hills State Park

HOCKING HILLS STATE PARK

2½ HOURS FROM CINCINNATI

Hocking Hills is tucked away within the rolling forests of Southeastern Ohio. I love going for a couple of nights at a time to unplug.

What really sets Hocking Hills apart are the super unique cabin experiences. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a luxury stay with all the bells and whistles or an adventurous treehouse, Hocking Hills has a wide range of rentals. During my last visit,we stayed at Raven’s Retreat, a remote cabin on 58 acres, featuring a hot tub, fire pit, sauna, yoga deck in the forest and space for up to 16 guests.

Be sure to spend some time in the Old Man’s Cave area. Another one of my top picks is the Rock House hike. Home to the only cave in the park, it boasts 25-foot-high ceilings and is 200 feet long! HockingHills.com

Red River Gorge
Hocking Hills
“I’d suggest using Cleveland as your home base. Consider getting out on Lake Erie, taking the family to Cedar Point or strolling through the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to round out your weekend.”

CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK  3½ HOURS FROM CINCINNATI

Cuyahoga Valley is Ohio’s only National Park. It resides in the North, between the cities of Akron and Cleveland, and takes about 3½ hours by car from Cincinnati. Although there are a few decent hiking trails here (my favorite is The Ledges Overlook), the experience here is less hiking-oriented than other options on this list.

Instead of booking a cabin, I’d suggest using Cleveland as your home base for a two- or three-night weekend getaway to the area. Not only can you explore the park, but you can take in all that Cleveland has to offer as well. Consider getting out on Lake Erie, taking the family to Cedar Point or strolling through the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to round out your weekend.

Inside the National Park itself you’ll find a lot of history about the Erie Canal system which once powered Ohio’s economy. There are a number of well-preserved lock systems scattered throughout the park. You can even take a scenic train ride through the park aboard the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. This is a great way to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time.

My favorite photography spots in the park and surrounding area are the Station Road Bridge, which towers high above the Cuyahoga River, Tinker Falls or Brandywine Falls–both waterfalls are located just outside the official National Park boundaries. If you’re looking for a great place to ride bikes or go bird watching, Beaver Marsh is another one of my favorite spots in the park. Since Cuyahoga Valley is a bit further away, I’d encourage you to spend a little bit more time there to take in everything the region has to offer. NPS.gov/cuva/index.htm

Running is great exercise, but a group of Indian Hill women have discovered that running together makes it much more than just a workout. Explore the power of community that comes from pursuing an interest with like-minded friends.

“I’ve always been a solo runner, but running with a group of women has been the most rewarding and motivating experience!” –Dana DeBord

“Running has always been more than exercise, it’s the constant through all of my experiences. Some days you need to crank it out solo and leave your troubles in the dust; other days you need an adventure run through the streets of Cincy with friends. Sharing that magic with fellow moms in this stage of life has been an incredible gift I can’t do without!” –Eliza Moffat

“Running is my therapy, especially when it is with friends. I can say with 100% certainty that any day I start with a run is better because of it–my energy is higher, my mood is boosted and my resiliency for whatever the day brings is stronger.” –Kelly Larbes

“I hope that this group can continue to grow and expand because there is nothing strong, energized and healthy moms can't do. I know for a fact that running helps enable that. I always have a better day after a run!”

ROSEMARY GRAPEFRUIT PEAR FIZZ

LIME MINT

ROSE MOJITO

This cocktail balances the tartness of grapefruit, the sweetness of pear, and the distinct notes of rosemary, all brought together with a bubbly finish.

Ingredients:

• 2 oz Gin (or Vodka)

• 1.5 oz Fresh Grapefruit Juice

• 1 oz Pear Liqueur (or Pear Juice)

• 0.75 oz Fresh Lime Juice

• 1 sprig of Rosemary

• Sparkling water

• Garnish: Rosemary sprig, grapefruit slice, pear slice

Instructions:

Place the rosemary sprig in a cocktail shaker. Lightly muddle the rosemary to release its oils. Add the gin (or vodka), grapefruit juice, pear liqueur and lime juice to the shaker. Add ice. Shake well until thoroughly chilled. Strain the mixture into a chilled glass filled with ice. Top with sparkling water or Prosecco. Garnish with a rosemary sprig, a grapefruit slice, and a pear slice.

A Lime Mint Rose Mojito adds a floral twist to the classic mojito, creating a refreshing and elegant cocktail. Here’s a recipe that balances the traditional lime and mint with the delicate aroma of rose.

Ingredients:

• 10 fresh mint leaves

• 1 lime, cut into wedges

• 2 tablespoons white sugar (or simple syrup, to taste)

• 2 ounces white rum

• 1 ounce rose water (adjust to taste, as it can be potent)

• Club soda or sparkling water

• Garnish: Mint sprigs, lime wedges, edible rose petals (optional)

Instructions:

Muddle:

Place the mint leaves and lime wedges in a glass. Add sugar. Use a muddler to gently crush the mint and lime. Pour the white rum and rose water into the glass. Stir well. Fill the glass with ice. Top with club soda or sparkling water. Stir gently. Garnish with a mint sprig, a lime wedge, and, if desired, edible rose petals.

Charged for the Future

EXPLORE BMW’S EVS–MORE THAN A TREND

ARTICLE BY LISA FLETCHER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BMW USA

The future of driving isn’t just exciting—it’s electric. Investing in an electric vehicle (EV) not only reduces emissions, it allows you to step into a world of cutting-edge innovation, effortless efficiency and an exhilarating driving experience. And when it comes to luxury EVs, BMW is leading the charge. With a lineup that blends power, performance and premium comfort, BMW proves that going electric doesn’t mean giving up what makes driving fun

One of the key reasons BMW’s EVs are so popular is that they don’t sacrifice the brand’s signature aesthetics or driving experience.

“BMW has done a great job in the luxury EV space, offering models based off of traditional BMW vehicles—they don’t look any different than their gasoline/hybrid stablemates,” explains Louis Velazquez, Marketing Director at The BMW Store near Kenwood. “BMW calls it ‘the power of choice.’”

Explore BMW’s four current EV models, each catering to different drivers and lifestyles:

• i4–based off the compact 4 Series Gran Coupe

• i5–based off the iconic 5 Series sedan

• i7–based off the executive 7 Series sedan

• iX SUV–an entirely unique model to BMW electric

According to Velazquez, BMW’s most popular EV, the i4, starts at $57,900—making it an attainable entry point into the world of luxury electric vehicles.

Put simply, choosing a BMW EV is about making a long-term investment in efficiency and convenience.

“Most EV adopters are finding the ownership experience to be quite easy since you can charge your vehicle at home with an in-home charger,” he explains.

No more gas station stops—just plug in at home and wake up to a full charge. For commuters and city drivers, it’s a game-changer.

Beyond convenience, BMW EVs represent a smart financial investment.

“Overall, the costs of owning an EV are less than a gasoline-powered car. Mechanically, EVs are simpler, so you’re replacing fewer parts. But there’s still a certain amount of maintenance required for EVs, just like any car. It’s still a machine,” Velazquez says.

And of course, there’s the environmental factor. BMW’s EVs are completely emissions-free, making them an investment in a cleaner future. Plus as charging infrastructure expands nationwide, EVs will only become a smarter, more attractive, more accessible choice.

CONTINUED >

Thinking about making the switch? It’s all about planning.

“Understanding your EV is of utmost importance,” Velazquez advises. “While most BMW EVs have a full range of around 300 miles, it’s important to give yourself a little bit of a cushion when traveling, and understand and plot your route ahead of time.”

As EV technology continues to evolve, BMW remains dedicated to producing vehicles that are not only sustainable, but also provide the ultimate driving experience. That’s their signature and their standard. Ready to test-drive the future of automation? Your EV is waiting. BMWStore.com | 6131 Stewart Rd, Cincinnati | 513.271.8700

Explore EV Ownership: TRAVEL TIPS

TO MAXIMIZE YOUR INVESTMENT

Owning an electric vehicle is a smart investment, but to get the most out of it, proper planning is essential.

Know Your Range: Most BMW EVs offer a range of 300 miles, but factors like speed, temperature and extra passengers can impact efficiency. Always allow for variables like these when planning longer trips.

Use Smart Navigation: BMW’s advanced navigation system helps you easily locate charging stations and optimize routes, helping reduce range anxiety.

Charge Strategically: Charging at home overnight is the most convenient option. When traveling, plan stops at high-speed charging stations to minimize downtime.

Be Aware of Seasonal Differences: Energy consumption increases in extreme temperatures—hot or cold—so monitor battery performance in summer and winter.

Stay Informed: EV technology is evolving rapidly. Keeping up with advancements ensures you make the most of your investment in sustainable, high-performance driving.

S TSEE MUSE U M S

While summer is known as a time for family vacations, camp for kids and endless pool days, it’s also a perfect opportunity to explore the excellent museums of Southwest Ohio. Whether you hope to experience local history, inspiring artists or cultural artifacts, there are plenty of options throughout the Cincinnati and Dayton areas.

Before heading out on a local adventure, consider signing up for a library card through the Cincinnati Public Library to reserve a Discovery Pass for the American Sign Museum, Taft Museum of Art and others. Many local museums also have special exhibits, activities and events scheduled for visitors throughout the summer and early fall. We’ve gathered a few to get you ready to explore!

AMERICAN SIGN MUSEUM CARILLON HISTORICAL PARK

The American Sign Museum in Cincinnati’s Camp Washington neighborhood is on a mission to celebrate the rich history of American signage through preservation and education. “Signs and sign making are a fascinating reflection of America through the years. If your experience at the American Sign Museum causes you to be more aware of signs in your travels and of their value to businesses & communities, we’ve done our job,” says Tod Swormstedt, founder and curator. This summer, enjoy guided tours and neon demonstrations every weekend, as well as sign-crafting activities in their classroom on Saturdays throughout July. Their first special exhibition, Glow & Behold , will also be on display through the end of July. All of these are included with general admission.

Dayton History’s Carillon Historical Park museum complex opened in 1950 to showcase the region’s industrial innovations, transportation achievements and Dayton’s contributions to world progress. The beautiful 65-acre campus was designed by the Olmsted Brothers (landscape architects of NYC’s Central Park) and contains dozens of museum buildings and countless artifacts. Plan your visits around Deeds Carillon Concerts in July, August and September or explore during special events like the Band Organ Rally on July 12-13 and the Antique Fire Apparatus Show on August 30. For an extra special experience, attend their signature event, Dayton’s Concours d’Elegance, on September 13. Featuring around 200 antique and classic automobiles and motorcycles, it’s a one-of-a-kind opportunity to see some of the finest vehicles in the country.

TaftMuseum.org

The Taft Museum of Art collection galleries are located in the Baum-Longworth-Sinton-Taft historic house. Built around 1820, it is downtown Cincinnati’s oldest wooden residence still in its original location. The mansion was home to generations of prominent Cincinnatians and contains over 800 works of art, featuring Chinese porcelains, American furniture, European decorative arts and major holdings of European and American paintings, including works by artists such as Francisco Goya, John Singer Sargent and James McNeill Whistler. They frequently host changing exhibitions and welcome summer visitors to enjoy The Crafted World of Wharton Esherick. The rarely loaned collection highlights the Pennsylvania artist’s career from his early woodcut illustrations to his revolutionary reimagining of furniture forms as organic sculpture. Admission is free on Sundays and Mondays.

DaytonArtInstitute.org

The Dayton Art Institute was founded in 1919 and has grown into one of the region’s premier fine arts museums. The museum’s collection spans 5,000 years of art history, including important American, Ancient American, Asian and European fine and decorative art collections. In addition to the permanent collection, which numbers more than 27,000 objects, DAI hosts world-class special exhibitions, educational programs and unique special events such as Oktoberfest. This summer (July 12–September 14), take in the Curtis Barnes, Sr., Dayton Icon exhibit. A painter and educator, Curtis Barnes, Sr., created bold, colorful, experimental paintings with a distinctive blend of naturalism and abstraction.
