In 4th grade I had a teacher named Mrs. May. There were many reasons I loved Mrs. May, she was smart, she was funny, she told great stories, but the biggest reason was she made me feel like I had potential. She treated me like I was smart, capable, and talented. She knew my parents were divorced and that there was sadness at home, and she took the time to make me feel special. So often we act as if we have a limited supply of encouragement, but encouragement is just like love - it is in boundless abundance and only multiplies. When we as women take the time to lift up other women, we never know the powerful effect that could have on changing someone's life. Mrs. May made me feel like I could do extraordinary things and in essence shifted my trajectory. It was also a female friend who encouraged me to start this magazine, the belief that she had in me made me feel like this dream could be achieved.
Who in your life needs a word of encouragement? Who needs to hear how capable they are? How talented they are? Who needs to hear that dreams are meant to be lived? Rising tides lift all. Find someone to mentor, write a hand written note to a friend, or invite someone you admire to lunch. Share your encouragement with others, you never know how it may help someone.
May is our Women's issue and it is always one of my favorites. In this issue we share stories of women. We are each called to tell our stories and sometimes that is all someone else needs to hear in order to feel encouraged, inspired, or simply 'normal'. In honor of our Women's issue, here is an excerpt from one of my favorite poems:
...Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed. I don’t shout or jump about Or have to talk real loud. When you see me passing, It ought to make you proud. I say,
It’s in the click of my heels, The bend of my hair, the palm of my hand,
The need for my care.
’Cause I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That’s me.

WOMEN CEOS WHO ARE REDEFINING LEADERSHIP
ARTICLE BY CASEY CREQUE
To be a woman in business takes dedication, hard work, and resilience. You must know how to succeed and fail and start again. These women not only demonstrate a strong work ethic and courage, but an undeniable purpose in everything they do.
WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU FACE AS A WOMAN IN YOUR INDUSTRY, AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
It’s easy to point fingers at external barriers like being underestimated, navigating male-dominated spaces, or trying to shatter that elusive glass ceiling without getting a concussion… but my toughest opponent has always been that little voice in my own head: self-doubt.
I overcame it by surrounding myself with people who pushed me to level up, by constantly learning, and most importantly, by making a conscious decision to believe in myself. Every time I tackled a challenge, took a risk, or nailed something that seemed impossible, I proved to myself that I was exactly where I was meant to be.
WHAT TRENDS DO YOU SEE IN YOUR INDUSTRY THAT COULD IMPACT LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN?
The defense, cyber, and engineering industries are moving faster than my kids when they see chores coming their way. Opportunities for women in leadership have never been greater, and the shift isn’t happening because of some policy or because it’s trendy, but because women are crushing it. Companies need sharp, strategic leaders who can think critically and execute effectively, so women who have honed their technical expertise and operational savvy are stepping up, not because they’re women, but because they’re the best for the job.
The future isn’t about making space for women… it’s about recognizing that we’ve already claimed it.
HOW HAVE YOU LEARNED TO MANAGE STRESS OVER THE YEARS?
Stress loves to isolate us, to make us feel like the weight of the world is on our shoulders alone. So, I step outside myself and pour into others, whether it’s mentoring a young professional, supporting a colleague, championing a cause, or just being there for someone who needs an ear… it helps me find clarity. Giving my time, energy, and heart to others doesn’t drain me. It turns stress into purpose, anxiety into action, and exhaustion into something fulfilling. Service is how I flip stress into something meaningful.
THE COMPANY YOU KEEP
“You’ll never know what you’re capable of if you stay tucked inside your shell.”
HOW DOES YOUR COMPANY ENGAGE WITH THE COMMUNITY?
At The Company You Keep, we believe community engagement isn’t about what WE need, it’s about showing up where the community needs us. It’s about listening, understanding, and then rolling up our sleeves to make a real impact.
We enjoy the chance to get in the trenches, amplify the voices of local businesses, mentor emerging leaders, and help organizations tell their stories in ways that inspire action. We work with nonprofits that serve the most vulnerable, advocate for the businesses that keep our economy strong, and bring people together for a greater purpose.
WHAT KEY ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN ASPIRING TO BECOME LEADERS IN THEIR FIELDS?
If I could sit across from every young woman with big dreams and an even bigger fire in her heart, I’d tell her this: Embrace the Suck. There will be days when you feel like you’re running uphill in the rain while wearing ankle weights. Days when the world tells you “no,” when you doubt yourself and wonder if you’re cut out for this. Lean into it. Strength isn’t built in the easy times, it’s built in the setbacks, in the times when you choose to get back up. That’s grit. That’s resilience.
Here’s another golden nugget that was passed on to me years ago: When you’re standing at a crossroads, unsure of your next move, remember this: Behold the Turtle; it only moves forward when it sticks its neck out. Leadership is about taking risks, speaking up, and betting on yourself when no one else will. You’ll never know what you’re capable of if you stay tucked inside your shell.
So, take up space. Be bold. Own your voice. And when the road gets rough, don’t back down, dig in. Because the women who change the world? They aren’t the ones who had it easy. They’re the ones who refused to quit.
Government contracting is a competitive and heavily male-oriented industry. One of the biggest challenges I faced was establishing credibility and navigating the complexities of the contracting process while building Aetos as a company. As a woman, whose experience was predominately information technology focused on commercial non-government markets, I often felt I had to work significantly harder to prove my technical and business acumen.
To overcome these challenges I focused on strategic networking and building relationships with key stakeholders like Small Business Liaison Officers, financial and business advisors, and prime contractors. Additionally, achieving SBA 8(a) certification as a Small Disadvantaged Business (SDB) based on my Native American status allowed us to access new contracting opportunities and build the necessary corporate experience to navigate successfully executing contracts with government customers and partnering with large businesses.
Several trends are shaping leadership opportunities for women in government contracting such as expansion of the Small Business Administration’s Women-Owned Small Business Programs, technology and innovation, and remote/flexible work schedules.
However, breaking into the upper echelons of leadership still requires persistence, strong industry relationships, and proactive engagement in advocacy groups.
Managing stress as a business owner is a constant balancing act that requires not just resilience, but also the courage to take calculated risks. Government contracting is unpredictable, so I’ve learned to embrace uncertainty while putting smart strategies in place to stay ahead of challenges.
I’ve found that stress doesn’t disappear—it just shifts as the business grows. The key is to stay flexible and focus on what’s within my control.
At the end of the day, stress is inevitable, but letting it control you is a choice. By staying adaptable, planning ahead, and taking calculated leaps of faith, I’ve been able to push through challenges and build something I’m truly proud of.
HOW DOES YOUR COMPANY ENGAGE WITH THE COMMUNITY?
At Aetos, community engagement is more than just a corporate responsibility—it’s a core value woven into the company’s culture. We believe that community engagement should be accessible to everyone. We learned early on that many employees truly want to participate in community activities but often struggle with the decision to use vacation hours to volunteer versus time with their families. That’s why we established a paid day off for employees to dedicate time to community service activities of their choice.
I’m a firm believer in leading by example to demonstrate a culture of giving, engagement and leadership that can inspire our entire team to be involved. In addition to Aetos serving the community through organizations such as Manna House, Liz Hurley Ribbon Run, Kids to Love, and Food Bank of North Alabama, I personally serve on multiple boards such as National Space Club, Huntsville Chapter and the Athens State University Board of Trustees and Foundation Board, and I encourage Aetos employees to do the same.
WHAT KEY ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN ASPIRING TO BECOME LEADERS IN THEIR FIELDS?
Success requires the ability to step outside of your comfort zone and embrace opportunities that may seem uncertain at first. Own your expertise and don’t let self-doubt hold you back. Find the people that make YOU Better. Find your network of supporters in all parts of life, through jobs, community activities, friends and family. You can’t connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards. Build your relationships and connections now and trust that the dots will connect in the future when you need these relationships the most. Be Resilient and Adaptable. The ability to pivot strategically is crucial. And take calculated risks. Taking risks is not about being reckless—it’s about making informed, strategic decisions that propel your business or career forward. Growth doesn’t happen by staying in the same place—it happens when you embrace opportunities, learn from challenges, and push forward despite uncertainty.
WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU FACE AS A WOMAN IN YOUR INDUSTRY, AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I am not sure if it is because I am a woman or simply because I care deeply about getting things right, but imposter syndrome has certainly been a challenge. What has helped me overcome it is surrounding myself with strong, values-driven leaders who share the same mindset around service, integrity, and growth. We support each other through the highs and lows, and that community has been everything. I remind myself that I do know what I am doing, that confidence is earned through consistency, and that I was made for this. I may still get nervous, but I show up anyway—and I show up strong.
WHAT TRENDS DO YOU SEE IN YOUR INDUSTRY THAT COULD IMPACT LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN?
In the promotional products and marketing world, there is a growing emphasis on purpose-driven branding, storytelling, and relationship-building—areas where women naturally excel. I believe this shift creates space for more empathetic, strategic, and intuitive leadership styles to shine. As the industry becomes more collaborative and digitally connected, women are not only finding more seats at the table—they are building the table. It is a powerful time for women to step into leadership, bring fresh perspective, and reshape how we define success.

HOW HAVE YOU LEARNED TO MANAGE STRESS OVER THE YEARS?
Stress is part of the journey, especially when you are building a business from the ground up. I have found that how I start my day makes all the difference. Each morning, I journal as a form of prayer and reflection. I write out my goals, visualize where I want to go, and give all the glory to God. On the days I skip this, I feel it. But when I stay grounded in that quiet time, I know I am not walking alone—He is either holding my hand or carrying me entirely. That mindset shift helps me face each day with grace and clarity.
HOW DOES YOUR COMPANY ENGAGE WITH THE COMMUNITY?
Community is the heart of everything we do. We have supported local nonprofits through sponsorships, served on boards, volunteered to build homes, and spent time helping those less fortunate. That said, I know there is more we can do—and we want to do more. I have recently started meeting with my team to brainstorm ways we can give back with deeper intention. We are building a strategic plan to ensure our efforts align with our values and truly make an impact.
WHAT KEY ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN ASPIRING TO BECOME LEADERS IN THEIR FIELDS?
Stay curious and be a lifelong learner. The world moves fast, and being open to growth is your superpower. Surround yourself with people who inspire you, who have been where you want to go, and who will challenge you in the best way. Do not be afraid to ask for help or take up space. Most importantly, trust that you have what it takes—deep down, you know you do. The journey will not always be easy, but it will absolutely be worth it. Buckle up and enjoy the ride.
WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU FACE AS A WOMAN IN YOUR INDUSTRY, AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
As a woman in a male-dominated industry, one of my biggest challenges was breaking through traditional barriers and proving my expertise. There were moments when I had to work twice as hard to be taken seriously, many times having to force myself and my company into rooms to prove that our organization could handle the work. As a woman of color, especially in leadership roles, I even had to prove to my employees that I was capable of leading. I overcame these challenges by staying persistent, continuously expanding my knowledge, and building a strong network of mentors and allies. Confidence and preparation were key – when you walk into a room prepared, you command respect, and I believe over the years, we have earned the respect of the community and our employees because we have proven we are a company, and I am a leader, who cares!
In the past, there was an intentional effort to set aside opportunities for women-owned and minority-owned businesses, which equipped businesses like ours to compete with larger organizations. Undeniably, companies who recognize a diverse leadership team brings innovation and better decision-making will realize more success and larger impact. We have recently begun to see that intentionality disappear, causing a disruption in women’s capacity to compete. I cannot stress enough though that women must remain proactive in seeking out leadership roles and advocating for themselves. We are worth it!
Managing stress is essential to maintaining a strong leadership presence. Over the years, I have learned the
power of NO to protect myself and my family. Those NO’s have equipped me to set boundaries, delegate effectively, and prioritize self-care. To me, self-care means pursuing my faith, meditating and restoring peace, and exercising to maintain balance. I have worked hard to surround myself with a strong support system—both personally and professionally—to help me stay focused and resilient in high-pressure situations, and for those people, I will forever be grateful.
It is deeply rooted in my personal and professional life to serve the community around me, and as a CEO, I believe that businesses have a responsibility beyond profits. We have pillars of focus for our community engagement that align with our mission, and we utilize our time and resources to engage with mentorship programs, workforce development initiatives, healthcare advocacy, scholarships and career training, STEMrelated education, and initiatives focused on minimizing the economic disparity for women and children.
WHAT KEY ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN ASPIRING TO BECOME LEADERS IN THEIR FIELDS?
“One NO, or even ten NO’s, does not equate to failure; it only means that those NO’s weren’t your YES to move toward success.” Never underestimate your value. Stay curious, never stop learning, and seek mentors who will selflessly guide. Surround yourself with women who encourage you to use your voice and find your seat at the table, and in that seat, always be ready to solve the problems. Leaders are not just problem spotters, they are problem solvers. Do not be afraid to take risks and step into leadership roles, because when you believe in yourself, others will believe in you too
“Stay curious, never stop learning, and seek mentors who will selflessly guide.”
Women are speaking up, speaking out, and connecting over menopause
ARTICLE BY AMY BAILEY
Women’s health is having its moment with the big word in healthcare right now being ‘menopause.’ Celebrities like Halle Berry and Naomi Watts are speaking up about their experiences, bestseller books are hitting the shelves like ‘How To Menopause’ by Tamsen Fadel, and doctors are advocating for more focus on this phase of a woman’s life. For years menopause was not

spoken openly about, we knew about hot flashes and mood swings, and that happened in your 50s, right? Wrong, perimenopause, the first phase of menopause, begins in your 40s, sometimes even earlier and can last anywhere from 4-10 years.
We interviewed doctors and women to learn more about the symptoms and how to best care for your body and mind during this life transition.
“During perimenopause our cycles become closer together and lighter,” says Eleanor Murray, MD, Madison Gynecology and Wellness, a menopause specialist. “Our estrogen levels are changing and that comes with an array of physical and mental changes. We have dry skin, dry hair, dry eyes, we begin to have weight gain around the middle. Brain fog, anxiety, depression can develop. And some women even experience joint pain and frozen shoulder.”
Dr. Murray continues, “Hot flashes and night sweats are the classics. The hypothalamus is the organ in our brain that tells us to sweat in the desert or shiver in the cold water to save our lives. Without estrogen in the bloodstream it becomes very inaccurate so that’s when we feel like it’s 1,000,000° outside, our internal heater makes our chest and face feel very, very warm sometimes. There is a wave of anxiety during these sweats. That’s the point when most women know and they say sign me up coach, I need help.” Murray explains, “These symptoms typically last 4-5 years prior to ages 50, 51, but they can last longer and happen earlier.”
The most important thing Dr. Murray recognizes is that so often women just want to know that it’s normal, “Ok this is a phase my body is going through and I’m not losing it.”
At 44, Georgia began having symptoms, “At 44, I had never heard the word perimenopause before, but I told a friend that some strange things were happening with my body and she said, ‘You may be in perimenopause.’” She continues, “This was an epiphany to me. I thought menopause happened in your 50s and how on earth am I just now learning that there’s a whole phase leading up to menopause that can begin in your 40s?”
Stephanie Cashin, an integrative therapist says, “This is one of my favorite topics as a therapist because emotional well-being is just as important as physical health during this transition. Cognitivebehavioral strategies can help women step off the emotional roller coaster, and simple sleep hygiene practices—like getting natural light first thing in the morning, limiting screen time at night (yes, even leaving your phone outside the bedroom), and creating a calming nighttime routine—can make a significant difference. Managing stress with regular movement, a balanced diet, and self-compassion can further support mood stability and sleep quality.”
Cashin does believe that the answer is not one size fits all. “Hormone therapy can be highly effective in relieving symptoms like hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and sleep disturbances. However, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Potential risks—such as an increased likelihood of blood clots, stroke, or certain cancers—depend on an individual’s health history. My best advice? Consult with a provider who specializes in menopause care to explore the risks and benefits specific to you.”
Dr. Murray says, “When it comes to hot flashes we have seen that hormone replacement therapy is 90% effective, but with other symptoms it may or may not help. When it comes to weight gain, strength training is your best bet over intense cardio.” Murray continues, “There is also a new medication called Viza. That instead of replacing the estrogen works with the hypothalamus.” CONTINUED >
Dr. Murray is a proponent of lifestyle adjustments as well. “We recommend dressing in layers so you can easily help your body recover from hot flashes and night sweats. We recommend weight loss. I tell patients to avoid hot liquids, alcohol, which can be triggers. Instead choose cold coffee or cold brew.”
Cashin also believes in lifestyle changes. “I’m passionate about lifestyle changes. They’re simple in theory but not always easy to implement. This is where therapy can be incredibly beneficial. When your body and mind aren’t functioning the way they used to, it can feel like you’re losing control, like the strategies that once worked are now failing you. That frustration is real. Therapy can provide a structured space to process these changes, grieve what’s shifting, and develop new strategies for navigating this stage with confidence and clarity. You’re not broken—you’re evolving.”
Maria, 49, began strength training and hormone replacement therapy. “I’ve been on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for about a year and a half now. The only downside is the patch itself—it’s visible when wearing a bathing suit, and sometimes it itches or irritates the skin. But I’ll gladly take that over feeling the way I did before.” Maria states, “My doctor prescribed the Combipatch, a combination of estrogen and progesterone, and it worked almost immediately. Hot flashes were the first to go, followed by increased energy, better sleep, and a more balanced mood. My mom laughed and said, I told you so.” At 49 Maria just competed in her first body building competition.
Cashin also speaks on nutrition and strength training. “Optimizing nutrition, engaging in regular movement, and prioritizing stress management can have a profound impact. Strength training supports bone health, while a diet rich in protein, fiber, and healthy fats stabilizes blood sugar and energy levels. Mindfulness practices and deep breathing techniques can help regulate mood and improve resilience. The key is consistency—small, sustainable changes over time lead to big results.”
As all women will go through this phase in life, it is important to find a provider who will listen and take the time to understand. Pay attention to your body, learn about it, analyze your lifestyle, and seek the options that work for you. It also helps to have a great support system and hear stories of other women.

I began collecting children’s books and gave them away at The Cottage Collective. The 2nd year, I had friends ask if they could give me books to donate. I began passing those out in Little Libraries all over town. Year 3, I would ask people to donate children’s books as well as young adult books. And they did. I had so many wonderful people in our community bring books to donate. The love was overwhelming.

For months, I prayed for a sign. When life is in a state of chaos, it is natural to crave order, to desperately search for meaning in the turmoil. I found myself looking for answers everywhere-hoping that some divine signal would appear to tell me what I should do. In actuality, all I wanted was to know that I was making the right decision for myself and my children,” says Teresa, 49.
“The sign I had been praying for came in the most unexpected way-from my 8-year-old son.” She continues, “One afternoon, as we were talking, he casually mentioned something that stopped me in my tracks. He said, You seem happy now, Mommy. It must be because no one is yelling anymore. My son recognized the peace in our home and the shift in energy that had taken place. And it wasn’t just about my happiness-it was about his, too. I wanted to model a healthier, more loving relationship-one that they could grow up to value and emulate. A relationship where peace was the foundation, not constant competition and tension.”
These women made the to decision to change their lives, but found stability and love again through self awareness, learning how to navigate budget and finances, and adjusting to life on the other side.
Teresa continues, “The only thing I wanted and prayed for was happiness and peace. It wasn’t about grand plans, finding a new partner, or any specific goal. I wanted to create a life in which we could all heal, where the constant tension of uncertainty would give way to a more loving and stable existence.”
Teresa’s priority became establishing a stable home for her children. After moving to a new city, it was pertinent for her to affirm to her children that they were still loved, cherished and important regardless of where they lived or what their family unit looked like. The next priority was establishing a budget, really reviewing spending, and saving for the children’s college education.
“The first step was for me to get control of my finances. For me, that meant getting organized and understanding exactly where my money was going. I immediately subscribed to a budgeting software, Mint, which is now Intuit.” She continues, “It helped me understand what I was spending and where I needed to save. I used this for years until I really felt like I had a full picture of what I was spending and what was important.”
Understanding finances wasn’t necessarily new to her, but it became important to learn how to budget as a single parent, especially how to build savings and invest. “I needed to understand how my finances would be affected as a single income household.”
Coping with the emotional challenges, Teresa learned so much about herself. “I was very careful with whom I shared my feelings. I did not want to disparage anyone.” She continues, “It’s unfair to project your own feelings onto a child that isn’t emotionally mature enough to understand it.”
She was also able to lean on friends for support and encouragement. “My friends were able to be my support system.” She states, “I’ve been able to guide others through similar struggles, sharing my experience to help them navigate their own challenges.”
Comforting and supporting friends and other women has allowed her to turn a very painful experience into something meaningful by being there for others.
She also sought professional counseling learning more about her emotions, fears, and thoughts. “Therapy was my lifeline. It was a safe space to reflect, understand the past, share my deepest worries and reframe my thoughts. I can honestly say that the skills I learned in those sessions became my foundation for moving forward, both as an individual and as a partner.”
This personal growth and healing defined a new life that was built on courage, reflection, and compassion for herself and her situation. “Life is wonderful now. Looking back, I can see how far I’ve come on my journey. I have learned so much more about myself-both the strengths and the areas that needed work.”
She continues, “This self-awareness has really transformed the way I approach relationships. Today, I am in a partnership where I feel safe and supported, able to openly share my thoughts and feelings without fear.”
It is a great reminder that even the hardest experiences can lead to tremendous personal growth. With the right support - therapy, self-reflection, and leaning on a strong support system- she was able to build a healthier and more fulfilling future.
“I now know how to protect my peace. Had I known earlier what I know now, I wouldn’t have felt the constant need to defend myself. I would have let silence be my ally, giving myself the space I needed to heal without constantly engaging in battles that drained my emotional energy.” She continues, “This is a skill I still practice to this day, not only with my ex, but with anyone who creates that sense of confusion and defensiveness for me.” CONTINUED >
“THERAPY WAS MY LIFELINE. IT WAS A SAFE SPACE TO REFLECT, UNDERSTAND THE PAST, SHARE MY DEEPEST WORRIES AND REFRAME MY THOUGHTS.”
When it came to Pam’s (32) decision to create a life independently, “I concentrated on my values and emotional well-being.” She continues, “I had neglected my own needs and became too focused on trying to align with someone whose priorities did not match my own.”
The loss of Pam’s mother and brother served as a powerful reminder of how fragile life is, and affirmed her decision to live authentically. “I’ve always considered myself resilient and self-motivated, but this experience allowed me to reconnect with who I truly am.” She continues, “I rebuilt my life independently and created a future for my true self. It has empowered me to step into the person I want to be.”
“I envisioned a life rooted in family, faith, stability, and peace in which my children and I could thrive,” Pam reflects.
Being a small business owner she shifted her focus from growing the business to rooting her career in a strong foundation. “My focus became to grow as a leader, not just for the sake of my team, but also as a mother.” She adds, “Creating a balanced home life while pursuing my career became crucial in rebuilding my life.”
When it came to budgeting, she felt the change and adjusted. “I was not used to making large financial decisions, so it was overwhelming, but also empowering. I became more curious about investing, saving, and sticking to a budget.” This budget was essential in planning for the future and necessary step in securely moving forward.
Pam confesses, “The emotional challenges were tough, especially with the grief of losing my mom and brother. I had suppressed so much of my grief and had to face some painful truths. Therapy played a key role in helping me process the emotional toll.”
One of the biggest lessons she learned was how to show up for herself in life. “I had to be honest with myself and practice what I preach every single day. My faith has been a constant source of strength, helping me focus on healing, forgiveness, and letting go of resentment.” She continues, “I’ve learned that healing isn’t linear, but by practicing gratitude and staying present, I can move forward. Taking care of my body and mind through fitness and daily self care practices have helped me regain my confidence and feel more capable. This journey has been about rediscovery and practicing self-accountability with faith and growth guiding me.
HOW A GROUP OF GIRLFRIENDS CAME TOGETHER TO GIVE THE GIFT OF ART
“Each brushstroke represents a unique voice, forming a powerful whole.”
“To be a real friend, it requires effort, you have to be intentional and it’s not easy,” says artist Frances McCarty. “Friendship is about lifting each other up and needs reciprocal effort. It’s also ageless and can come in all shapes and sizes. In pretty much every aspect of life, I think that quality is way more important than quantity.”
Her friend, Catherine Courtney, runs a gym out of her home and has collected a wide range of clients. Courtney welcomes all her clients into her home, and despite the early mornings, squats and planks she has transformed the misery of working out into an experience that feels more like belonging to a chosen family. One day after a workout, clients and friends Anna Hand and Ashley Ryals suggested giving Catherine a gift from the group. That quickly morphed into one of the most intentional and thoughtful gifts, a painting that the whole group could participate in together.
Sixteen ladies participated over a series of months to create the art and named it “CeCe”, Catherine’s nickname. The original is mixed media on a 36x48” canvas. Everything in McCarty’s studio was used - acrylic, ink, spray paint, oil sticks, water soluble crayons, sharpie, gilding wax, paint pens, gold foil and more. McCarty reflects, “There are elements that represent Catherine, her passion, and the relationship that she has with each individual throughout the piece.”
The piece is also embellished with the following phrase on the back: “A collective expression of unity, creativity, and gratitude. Each brushstroke represents a unique voice, forming a powerful whole. It reminds us that art, like life, is beautifully imperfect and full of possibilities.”
To say that this gift is a physical manifestation of a group’s collective love for one another is an understatement. What is
“The friendships that have the foundation of mutual admiration, grace and respect will stand the test of time.”
even more special about this piece is that it will continue its legacy of giving by donating the net proceeds of all CeCe prints to Catherine’s charity of choice, the National Children’s Advocacy Center.
The idea of a collective piece meant that the group needed to work on something that would allow all people and skillsets to feel comfortable making marks on the canvas. “That is the most intimidating thing about painting – having the confidence to start.” McCarty continues, “I wanted the ladies to feel confident that even their smallest mark would help the development of the piece. Earlier in the year, Anna had shared a digital image of an abstract face that I thought of immediately as a good launching point for this group to use as inspiration. It was based on a graffiti style with lots of color, bold lines, and layers within the piece. Perfect for sixteen women to add their own flare. There is something cathartic and freeing about turning on music and working with friends on a gift for someone else. It was a blast to see these ladies let loose, find their groove and enjoy the process.”
Courtney always says the greatest gift you can give is your time. “I value friendship by the level of kindness and effort someone is willing to invest back into said relationship,” says McCarty. “The fact that each of these ladies took time out of their very busy schedules (during the holidays no less!) to come to the studio to work on a gift is amazing to me. Sixteen business owners, managing partners, sub-contractors, elected officials, board representatives, entrepreneurs, mamas, grandmothers, friends, and an assistant US attorney for goodness sake all carved out that time. If that is not an exemplary statement of friendship, I don’t know what is.”
On friendship, Courtney says, “I’ve learned that it’s okay and expected for
relationships to ebb and flow, and to enjoy the people that God has put in your path today. The friendships that have the foundation of mutual admiration, grace and respect will stand the test of time.”
When the big reveal happened, Courtney’s emotions could not be contained. “To say I was completely shocked would not be an understatement. It was Christmas Eve morning and I was expecting 3 or 4 of my brave regulars for a workout before jumping into our family holiday time. I was running downstairs with the music in hand ready to get started and when I turned the corner, I was completely surprised by some of my very favorite people in the whole world. Speechless for me is a BIG deal- but there we were!”
“As I tried to get my bearings, through giant, ugly tears, I scanned the group and found myself thinking, I see them all here collectively, but do they even know each other? “
As usual, Frances reigned us in and got my attention focused on the painting. I remember at the time just asking no one in particular, “how did this happen?” and “you guys know each other?” and “what are YOU doing here for an early workout?”
As the story unfolded, Courtney learned how Frances, Ashley and Anna were able to connect the dots and find people that they had not met but they knew that Courtney had worked with. Courtney says, “The nature of my work is very personal and even more so intimate because it’s in my home. As such, the relationships built have many layers.”
Courtney continues, “I am so fortunate to only work with people who I genuinely care for and adore. The energy in my space is sacred and I always want people to be comfortable (as much as possible when working out) so we have a strictly good vibes only policy.”
CeCe now lives in Courtney’s studio. “I love her being where I spend the majority of my day, and I find myself getting lost in it and finding new things that I’ve never seen before every time I look at it! It’s truly a gift that continues to give.” Courtney recalls, “Just recently I was working with one of my male clients who asked about the origin of the painting, and I couldn’t even tell the story without my eyes filling with tears. It is truly the most thoughtful, true demonstration of love in the form of a gift that I’ve ever received.”
As an artist, McCarty gives her time, creativity and heart into each piece. “By giving artwork as a gift you are truly giving a piece of yourself. Think about it. From the doodles your child gave you back in preschool to the curated pieces that have been handed down through generations. Each piece is precious in the giver’s eye.”
CeCe was painted by Sara Beth Wilcox, Meggan Crunkleton, Anna Hand, Ashley Ryals, Karen Black, Lane Pugh, Lisa Berger, Pam Boysen Wing, Holly McCarty, Cynthia Almodovar, Laura Hodge, Kallie Mitchell, Carey Miller, Margaret Ann Bibb, Shane Maddox and Frances “Frankie” McCarty.
Prints and notecards will be available soon at many of the local gift shops around town. Shameless plug for NCAC - If you need your own CeCe print or notecard sooner rather than later, email me at fcmccarty@gmail.com or direct message me on Instagram @frankiemccarty.art to place your order.

Writer and photographer Martha Hoelzer explores this mesmerizing island
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARTHA HOELZER
As our plane soared over Barbados, brilliant jewel tones of turquoise, blue, and green shimmered below, blending seamlessly with the island’s golden beaches. A trip to the Caribbean is a must for the female traveler, promising to delight the senses. From surf breaks to serene, glassy waters, rugged east coast terrain to awe-inspiring reefs on the west, and lively events like horse racing, cricket, and yacht races, Barbados offers something for everyone.
Bridgetown, the capital settled in 1628 by English settlers, is a short ride from the airport. While en route to your destination, you may pass by quaint chattel houses, painted in vibrant hues, scattered across the island. Once designed for easy relocation as workers moved across the island to harvest sugar cane and other crops, many of these traditional homes have now found new life as permanent shops and restaurants.
Barbados is closely linked to the United States historically. The architecture, and colors of the homes around downtown Bridgetown inspired future residents of Charleston to build similar style buildings and to name streets after areas. George Washington visited with his step-brother, who was suffering from tuberculosis, and stayed at the Crofton House, now the George Washington House. Visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the Garrison Tunnels, and enjoy a meal at the on-site cafe.
Beyond exploring historical sites, visitors can also discover Barbados as the birthplace of rum. Visit plantations St Nicholas Abbey (one of three Jacobean homes in the Western Hemisphere from 1658) or Mount Gay, which has been producing rum for over 300 years.
The people are as warm and friendly as the vibrancy of the surrounding landscape. Tourists, many from Britain and Canada return year after year building relationship with the locals and one another as their stays overlap. Returning for my second year, I was warmly welcomed by familiar faces—from the shop owners and the vendor who sold me coconuts and veggies to fellow travelers. Conversations flowed effortlessly, covering everything from escaping three feet of snow to adjusting to left-side driving and the joy of “letting go” that travel inspires.
After a few relaxing days on the white sands of Dover Beach and exploring the St. Lawrence Gap area—known for it’s diverse lodgings, restaurants and nightlife—we kicked off the trip with a Silver Moon catamaran tour. Aboard a luxurious catamaran with impeccable service and an intimate setting for just 12 guests, we cruised along the west coast, stopping twice to snorkel among turtles, stingrays, and schools of vibrant fish. Our guide lured them even closer by scattering breadcrumbs into the water, creating a mesmerizing underwater experience. Dinner, drinks and music enhanced our sunset cruise as we met new friends and exchanged stories as the sun dipped below the horizon.
Meeting new friends on these types of trips is easy as people let their guards down willing to embrace new things as they escape their lives back home. Our new friends encouraged us to meet them at Bikini Beach, on the west coast, for dinner one evening, where we watched in awe the roof awning rolled back to expose a starry sky above as we dined. They recommended Lickrish Food Tours , specifically the “Original Bajan Walking Food Tour” around Bridgetown.
A dinner in Speightstown at Local & Co. was the trip’s culinary highlight. Locally sourced food from farmers, foragers and fishers supports the local economy while creatively merging flavors together. Upon entering, a small store offers jewelry, clothing, soaps, lotions and other handmade items for sale. Just beyond, stone walls and an intimate bar set the backdrop to await your outside table. Whether dining by the beachside as the sun sets or elevated on the deck beneath woven lamp shades and a majestic tree, Local & Co. is a magical atmosphere with stunning views of the sea. Definitely keep an eye out for local specials, but the crudo sampler, which features
the coconut ceviche, a fusion of creamy coconut, zesty lime and chili had me longing to sip the leftover juices. I restrained, but enjoyed dipping some breadfruit to capture as much as possible.
Not far from Speightstown along the northern part of the island, Animal Flower Cave offers incredible views of Atlantic waves crashing into the cliffs below as you eat lunch. The breadfruit tacos are beyond delicious and not to miss. Depending on the day and the height of the waves, tour the cave to see the natural rock pools and the flowers that open up beneath the water surface. Definitely bring a swim suit and a pair of shoes that can handle wet and rugged terrain.
When looking for a beach to explore, there are many to experience from the colorful iconic pink umbrellas of luxurious Sandy Lane that overlook the calm waters of the west coast, to nearby Folkstone Marine Park, where you can lounge, swim and experience some of the best snorkeling on the island along a protected reef. Stroll down the boardwalk or enjoy fish cakes from the nearby food concession to enjoy the day.

Close to Bridgetown, crescent shaped Carlisle Bay provides a natural harbor for swimming or snorkeling with boats dotting the water and sunbathers line the shore. Pebbles Beach overlooks Carlisle Bay with some waves and most mornings the race horses are taken by their grooms to bathe in the water. Around the corner, the south coast offers surf breaks at Drill Hall or Freights. Talk to the local surfers to understand how the culture works for exchanging turns, etc. For a break from the beaches, take a walk or practice yoga on the Richard Haynes Boardwalk. Then, stop by Artsplash Cafe for excellent coffee, breakfast, or lunch, and explore its outdoor farmers market and art gallery showcasing local artists.
On the rugged east coast near Bathsheba, the Atlantic waves pound the shores of Soup Bowl and Parlour, making them prime spots for watching pro surfers in the winter months or taking a peaceful stroll through this laid-back region. When visiting the east coast near Bathsheba, be sure to visit P.E.G. Farm for a tour and enjoy the cafe overlooking the fields. Wherever you go, stay or visit, this small hospitable island will make you feel incredibly welcome and at home.

ARTICLE BY AMY BAILEY
It’s strawberry season and what better way to celebrate than with a delicious strawberry shortcake. This recipe isn’t too tedious, and will bring a sweet smile to your family’s face.
Shortcake batter:
• 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
• 1 TBSP cornstarch
• 2 tsp baking powder
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• ½ teaspoon salt
• ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
• 2 large eggs
• ½ cup whole milk
• 1 TBSP fresh lemon juice
• 1 TBSP lemon zest
• 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
Strawberry filling:
• 1 1/3 cups chopped fresh strawberries
• 1 TBSP granulated sugar
Whipped cream:
• 2 cups cold heavy whipping cream
• 1 TBSP granulated sugar
• 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
Decoration:
• 2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced in half
Step 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line the bottom of an 8-inch round deep cake pan or 8-inch round springform pan with a round of parchment paper and lightly grease the sides.
Step 2. Make the cake batter. Sift the flour, corn starch and baking powder into a mixing bowl. Add the sugar and salt and whisk to blend well. Add the soft butter, beaten eggs, lemon juice, lemon zest, milk and vanilla and beat using an electric hand mixer or a stand mixer on medium-low speed until the batter is smooth.
Step 3. Spoon the batter into the prepared pan and spread it out evenly. Bake for 35-45 minutes until the cake is evenly golden and a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then invert onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Step 4. Make the strawberry filling. Combine chopped strawberries and sugar in a bowl and toss together to combine. Leave them for 10-20 minutes or until they have released a little of their juices. Strain the strawberries, reserving the juice.
Step 5. Make the cream filling and topping. Whisk or beat whipping cream on medium speed until peaks form. Add the sugar and vanilla and continue to beat until they form semi-firm peaks. Be mindful not to over whip as the cream can become grainy.
Step 6. Assemble your strawberry shortcake. Use a large serrated knife to slice the cake in half horizontally. Place the bottom layer of cake onto a serving plate.
Step 7. Spoon a little under half of the cream over the cake and spread it out evenly. Spoon the drained chopped strawberries over the cream.
Step 8. Place the top layer over the filling and apply a bit of pressure to help it stay in place. Spoon the remaining cream over the cake and pile the fresh sliced strawberries over the cream.
Step 9. Just before serving, drizzle the reserved strawberry juices on top.
Step 10. Serve immediately or place in the fridge for an hour to firm up slightly and make it easier to slice.
