Just because it’s taking time, doesn’t mean it’s not happening. For years I felt torn between an array of things I wanted to do and being a mom. I loved being there for my child, but I also felt like I was wasting God given talents by not working harder at a career. In just a year my life has changed immensely by launching a monthly magazine, a podcast, moving into an office downtown, and hosting events to celebrate this city. If there is any thing that this past year has shown, it’s the following:
• Things happen in the right timing.
• Direction is more important than speed.
• It is in the valleys where we can have the most growth and we learn who we are.
• Never ever give up, but be malleable, dreams don’t have to fade, they can evolve.
• Stop worrying, right now. Stop letting worry consume your thoughts it is the biggest waste of time.
• See the worth in others and lift them up, you need allies in this life who believe in you and that means you need to believe in others.
• Surround yourself with friends who praise you even when you’re not in the room. Those are the type friends you deserve.
• Celebrate every win, even small ones like getting that hand written note in the mail or reacting differently to conflict.
• Wake up and repeat these words ‘God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of sound mind.’
I hope you enjoy our Women's Issue and I hope you take the time to celebrate this life and honor whatever it is you do, whether it is raise upstanding, functional children; run a small or large business; serve as a caretaker; are a front line worker; or work to make ends meet for yourself and your family. We each hold space in this world.

Sitting down with two Alabama judges, Justice Sarah Stewart and Judge Karen Hall, proves not only inspiring but food for the soul.
“Managing your own expectations versus managing what’s expected of you.” Justice Sarah Stewart offers this as the number one key to being a successful woman. Justice Stewart wanted it all coming up through her career. She wanted the family, she wanted the career, she wanted to continue to grow in both of those houses, but Justice Stewart began to
realize that the idea that you can have it all, well, that turned out to be a myth. Managing what’s expected of you versus your own expectations of yourself is a constant push and pull between what you want for yourself and what others want from you. When Justice Stewart speaks to other women in her field, she likens her life to an old-fashioned paper plate at dinner. You can only fit so much on it before it starts to overflow, things fall off, and get messy. “I wasn’t going to be able to be at every single choir recital and every single play; sometimes it just wasn’t possible for
ARTICLE BY SARAH BUECHLER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NADIA KIDD“Your mental health and your sense of self-worth is just as important as your family and your career.”
me, part of what I had to manage was letting that go. I had to be a Judge and help people with drug addictions or help bring justice to victims and their families.” Being ok with life piled on and things falling off becomes this form of acceptance that holds you in a better mental position to manage all these expectations. Maybe the myth of you can have it all comes from the myth of you can do it all. “But that still doesn’t mean you’re not a great mother, or a great lawyer and when you know that the better off you are.”
Before Justice Stewart began mentoring young women, she thought that managing these expectations just fell into two categories, work and home. “Now I recognized that a healthier approach is more like a tripod and that third leg has got to be your own well-being. Women tend to neglect themselves in areas such as exercise, eating well and mental health because they are focused on the other two legs instead of themselves.” How can you possibly meet these expectations if you are not at your best and that comes from taking time out for yourself. “Your mental health and your sense of self-worth is just as important as your family and your career.”
Carving out solitary time with a young family and a demanding career can be very difficult.
“When you have down time, you feel like you need to be doing something and the luxury of taking a walk without being on the phone, or without counting how many steps you’re getting in, but just taking a walk for a mental break is something we all need to do more.”
We ended our conversation with Justice Stewart by asking what books women should be reading today. Justice Stewart herself is reading Brené Brown’s Dare to Lead after finishing a previous book of hers called Dare Greatly. Justice Stewart agrees with Brené Brown’s premise that there is a widespread belief that vulnerability is a weakness but by embracing it, that becomes your greatest strength. “Women are turning out to be very successful leaders because they are willing to be more vulnerable and learn from that position. Leading from vulnerability helps mold and manage your own expectations and helps you become a better leader all around.”
Justice Sarah Stewart is an Associate Justice on the Alabama Supreme Court, elected in November 2018 for a six-year term. Before her appointment, she served for thirteen years as a Circuit Judge in Mobile and was the first female jury trial judge in the area. On March 5th of this year, Justice Stewart won the position of Alabama Chief Justice.

“It is extremely important to surround yourself with a supportive network who offers forward-thinking and experienced advice.”
As a young woman, Judge Karen Hall was not equipped with a fear filter, and that unbridled constitution translated into a hallmark quote which she certainly would tell every woman, “Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.” Almost sounds like she dares you. Judge Hall in all her success, says she has lost as much as she has won in her life. That never stopped her from pushing through, expanding upwards and outwards in marriage, family and career.
“Many women don’t run for public office because of the fear factor.” Judge Hall said. There are many ways fear translates into our lives as women, whether it’s the fear of being exposed, that nettled thought that we are sacrificing our families for our careers, or the fear of taking on greater challenges; it appears to be this seemingly insurmountable obstacle that Judge Hall is determined for all of us to conquer.
I sat down with Judge Hall and asked her to help us dissect this fear factor that challenges us, and how we can best break that barrier.
What can be an aggravating component in challenging our fears? Advice. Yes, the advice you take can exacerbate your fear factor. It may sound counterintuitive, but we must have great discernment from whom we take advice and why it’s being offered in the first
place, even from other women. “As women, we can be very hard on one another, it’s unfortunate but true.” Judge Hall recalled advice given by a colleague when she first took the bench that today would be categorized as a generationally limited way of thinking. You don’t have to believe everyone. Times change, and your fears of today might not be those of tomorrow. Judge Hall touched on several generational differences, and sees tremendous progress for women, but poor advice is poor advice, and it can be a binding agent to the status quo, when we deserve and dream of so much more. Judge Hall shared that, “It is extremely important to surround yourself with a supportive network who offers forward-thinking and experienced advice.”
For Judge Hall, her husband has been a mitigating force to life’s challenges and fears. “Find a spouse or a partner that is truly supportive and committed to you every day,” and Judge Hall means every day. She and Bill met in 1985 and married two years later; a marriage, she says, that has been her bedrock for the last 37 years. Together, they have been the cornerstones of one another’s success.
We went on and spoke of younger women and Judge Hall touched on generational changes and how those influence women in marriage today.
“Find a spouse or a partner that is truly supportive and committed to you every day.”
“There has been substantial progress regarding domestic duties and child-rearing responsibilities as far as sharing the load goes. Women today appear to have greater freedom to pursue their career goals, because their spouses share in roles that were once left exclusively to women.”
However, Judge Hall highlighted a key issue facing younger women today that she has seen in her courtroom. “Younger couples aren’t necessarily looking forward and asking, where do we see ourselves as a couple 30 or 40 years down the road? They are looking for relationships based upon economic convenience or a certain lifestyle now, rather than the fundamental principle of long-term commitment to one another.”
Sounds like this sort of instant gratification can lead to trouble sooner than later. So, Judge Hall could not emphasize enough the importance of seeking a loving and committed relationship. Spending everyday life with that person and dreaming of what that relationship might look like in the future. During our conversation, it was apparent that this kind of relationship Judge Hall speaks of is the one she and
Bill share. Unconditional love and trust, sharing life’s challenges, and supporting one another through the good and the bad can diminish fear to nothing more than an obstacle in life’s path.
After my lunch with Judge Hall, I couldn’t help but to think that the two gifts we can give to one another as women is to be a person worthy of giving sound, experienced advice, and to become a leader in your capacity to represent what’s possible for younger generations of women.
Judge Hall has served the people of Madison County as a judge since 1996. She received her Doctor of Jurisprudence from Cumberland School of Law and her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Florida, where she was recognized as a member of the University’s Hall of Fame. She has been involved with numerous organizations for years at the national, state, and local level; notably as the past President of Leadership Huntsville/ Madison County and the past President of The National Children’s Advocacy Center Board of Directors. More than any award or accolade, Judge Hall considers her greatest achievement to be her three children.

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR SONGWRITING?
Life, love and my faith inspire my songwriting; I’m also very much inspired by other people’s stories.
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR THIS LATEST ALBUM?
I look forward to releasing a full-length album one day, currently, I’m most excited to partner with Leesta Vall Recording Studio in Brooklyn, New York to release a vinyl comprised of LIVE performed singles. Some songs are old, some songs are new but all of them will be stripped down and performed acoustically. This vinyl will feature a brand-new song of mine, called “Somethin’ Bout”— an R&B song about living in the moment. Listeners will be able to buy the vinyl and be able to stream my new single on all streaming platforms.
WHAT RECURRING THEMES CAN LISTENERS FIND IN THESE NEW SONGS?
Contentment is the recurring theme of my new songs; I hope to encourage listeners to live life free from comparison.
HAVE YOU ALWAYS HAD A LOVE FOR MUSIC? WHAT INSPIRED THIS LOVE?
I’ve always had a love for music but my love for songwriting developed overtime. I started off writing poetry and had aspirations to be a spoken word artist. I wrote my first song when I was fifteen ; from there, my love of music and songwriting started; it put me on a trajectory of creating intentional music that embodies different elements of life and lessons. Connectivity inspires my love for music—I love connecting with people.
My hometown, Huntsville, and living in the South very much inspires my music. My hometown (and the South) forces me to stretch out and embrace lived-in experiences—here in the South, relationships are valued, conversations are meaningful and no one is rushed. Such echos my feelings and approach to songwriting—I like to take my time and pen meaningful words and conversations. Additionally, I love clean instrumentation and the sounds of guitar— guitar is my instrument of choice and I love incorporating it into my music.
I’ve been blessed to have many different music mentors and people that have spoken into my life, musically. I have a long list, but the following local heroes have blessed me the most: Canita Rogers, Gloria Betts, Cedric Draper, Kelvin Wooten, Codie G, Daniel Adamek and Johnny Okwu.
WHAT
You can find a plethora of different sounds, artists and genres on my playlist. I love all types of music and sonic textures.
Music education is important because music teaches you creativity and soft-skills such as collaboration and articulation. It’s also an amazing way to help remember and retain information. Jokingly, I would never know my days of the week if it wasn’t for me singing it to the tune of “The Addams Family” theme song—I have to thank my Kindergarten teacher, Eula Battle, for that.

A Q&A with Anna Husband, owner of tattoo parlor, The Gilded Moth
ARTICLE BY AMY BAILEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NADIA KIDDWhen you think of tattoo parlors visions of dark rooms with fluorescent flickering lights may come to mind, but the moment you set foot in The Gilded Moth you feel like you are in a spa. Beautifully curated, The Gilded Moth is owned by Anna Husband with the idea to create an environment that evokes artistry and calmness, instead of intimidation and uneasiness. This tattoo parlor knows the intention and thought that goes into getting inked and has created a space where everyone is welcome and all will feel comfortable. We wanted to learn more about the woman behind the needle, Anna Husband - what drives her, what inspires her, advice she would give to other entrepreneurs, and, of course, what is the craziest tattoo she’s ever inked.
BORN AND RAISED?
Born in Detroit, MI and moved to Madison, AL in 1996, at age 4
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN HUNTSVILLE?
Moved to downtown Huntsville in 2015 from Madison, AL
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN A TATTOO PARLOR IN HUNTSVILLE?
I’ve always loved seeing the continued growth of Huntsville, especially with small businesses. It’s what makes a city unique. Each small business provides an added culture to the city. So I was inspired to make my mark and open Gilded Moth.
Everyone is welcome! We pride ourselves on being inclusive and customer focused. Our clientele is anyone who wants a custom drawn, high quality tattoo in a relaxing and upscale environment.
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE?
To make everyone want a tattoo. Just kidding. I want to create a unique experience and environment for both clients and tattoo artists so getting tattooed at Gilded Moth is more than just getting a tattoo, it’s a core memory. Long term I hope to be the first place people think of when they think of a wonderful tattoo and experience.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU FACE?
I think one of the biggest challenges is always the public perception of tattoos. The stigma being that tattoos aren’t socially acceptable in a lot of instances. Tattoos are for those who want to display art, those who want a permanent piece of art to commemorate something, tattoos are for anyone who wants to choose something for themselves forever. Which for me means tattoos are for everyone.
WHAT IS THE BEST BUSINESS ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED?
I would say some of the best advice I received as a small business has to do with working with other small businesses. No matter if they are in a different industry or a direct competitor, by working together we help create the culture that makes Huntsville a unique place.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO OTHER PEOPLE WANTING TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS?
Go for it! Being a business owner is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. Just make sure you are ready to be CEO, HR, marketing director, sales person, accountant, and janitor at your business. Also, add 30% to your budget and tack on 3 months onto your buildout timeline.
“Tattoos are for those who want to display art, those who want a permanent piece of art to commemorate something, tattoos are for anyone who wants to choose something for themselves forever. Which for me means tattoos are for everyone.”
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT OWNING A BUSINESS IN HUNTSVILLE?
I’d say my favorite thing is how wonderful the small business community is, we truly want to help and uplift each other. Also the patrons of Huntsville, it’s a unique and diverse group of people who want to support small business.
DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT DAY IN HUNTSVILLE.
Ok the perfect day. So I would start by working out at the Fitzgerald Pilates, then grab a coffee after at Honest. Probably freshen up and walk downtown. Sit on a patio with my family. Enjoy a good meal and drink. Then if there is a good show at the Orion head over there for the evening.
COOLEST TATTOO YOU’VE EVER DONE?
That’s tough. I’d say for me, the coolest might have to be the tattoo I did on myself. It was the first tattoo I ever did. It was scary, exciting and obviously very memorable.
BIGGEST TATTOO YOU’VE EVER DONE?
A full leg sleeve or half of a back piece.
EASIEST BODY PART TO TATTOO?
Top of the arm or forearm.
HARDEST BODY PART TO TATTOO?
Stomach. It’s rough for the client and hard to tattoo in general.
You Were Never Told St Tropez Is Paradise?
- Karl LagerfeldSomething beautiful happened when I let go of my nervousness about traveling solo - my sense of sight, sound and smell heightened and I became acutely aware of everything around me. When you travel by yourself you are much more in tune with your environment. You notice more, you take in more. On my first solo trip to France, I felt like a child, wide-eyed and spellbound by discovery. And of course being that I was in Saint Tropez, only amplified those feelings of wonderment.
We met a couple several years ago that had been traveling to Saint Tropez every year for over 20 years. At first I questioned ‘The same place?’ But after my first visit I understood. It is magic. A city fortified in history named after a Roman officer during Nero’s reign named Torpes whom was beheaded after converting to Christianity and placed in a small boat that would end up on the shores of Saint Tropez, fishing and ship building would become its main industries, eventually artists of all kinds would call it home because of
its beauty. There is no other place like it and somehow it retains its history and small fishing village feel among the glamour. The Mediterranean lapping against natural beaches, preservation of architecture and colors, historical cuisine, and the best market in the world, it is no wonder that it retains its reputation as the crown jewel of the Cote D’Azur, or French Riviera.
This infatuation with France began the day a French teacher visited Whitesburg Elementary School and assigned me the
French name Antoinette. An adoration for a place that seemed like a dream would continue to build throughout my life. From a fascination with French cuisine to the landscapes painted by the world’s most acclaimed artists to the impeccable taste in everything from clothes to decor, I fell in love with the French way of life. If there is one city that captures this way of life best, it is Saint Tropez, home to the bikini and Tarte Tropezienne. A place where you can experience the best of both worlds, luxurious and

laid back; opulent and natural; days filled with everything you want or nothing at all. A place where the art of living well reigns superior to our Western world. A place where I never find myself scrambling to do anything. A place I now return again and again. I am grateful to this Mediterranean paradise that soothed my wanderlust and filled my soul with so much beauty.

7 THINGS I WOULD TELL MY YOUNGER SELF
“Don’t take criticism from someone you would never take advice from” and other life lessons
ARTICLE BY AMY BAILEY BY CLARK DUNNEven if we live in gratitude for our life and how we got where we are today, there are always lessons we learn along the way that for just a moment we wish we could back in time, find our twenty year old self, and give them a big pep talk with these nuggets of wisdom. There are many things I wish I could tell my younger self. As I sit here in this moment with a life and career that looks quite different than it did 2 years ago, surrounded by incredible people and an incredible community, here are 7 things that come to mind:
1. STAY YOUR COURSE. KEEP YOUR FOCUS
Don’t get distracted by people on the sidelines. I remember a comment I kept hearing before I launched the magazine was ‘I hope that works out for you.’ I wasn’t going in for an operation, I was launching a magazine, something that in me evoked excitement and passion. There will always be little comments and people more prone to discouragement, stay focused, stay intentional and do the work to get where you want to go. The recipe is simple if you follow it.
2. DON’T TAKE CRITICISM FROM SOMEONE YOU WOULD NEVER TAKE ADVICE FROM
Stay above the fray of the people you would never ask advice. There has to be science behind the fact that so often our most vocal critics are people whose lives we would never aspire to mimic. Look at the source before you let it hurt your feelings.
3. APPRECIATE EACH MOMENT, THEY ARE ALL OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW
Stop looking at things as good or bad, and start looking at them as opportunities. In each there is
a lesson on how to react, how to relearn behavior, and how to come out a better human.
4. COMPLAIN LESS
Sure there’s a time to vent, but be very aware of what is coming out of your mouth. Complaining doesn’t just affect whomever or whatever you’re speaking about, it affects you, your mindset, and your productivity too. When we complain regularly that negative thought process will become your default mode way of thinking.
5. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE THAT MAKE YOU WANT TO BE BETTER
Sometimes we end up with situational friendships, but sometimes those people do not leave us with a good feeling after being together. Take notice of how people leave you feeling. Choose to surround yourself with people that offer wisdom and make you feel good. I also notice what people laugh at, if their laughter comes from talking bad about others, that’s a big red flag.
6. RECOGNIZE NEGATIVITY
Negativity isn’t just saying something negative, it’s undermining another, it’s a bad attitude, it’s not thinking positively. You are your thoughts, so choose to think positively.
7. FALL IN LOVE WITH LIFE AND PEOPLE
This doesn’t mean you have to like everyone and every situation, but it does mean you are curious about life in all facets. You have a passion for life’s moments, how it ebbs and flows, and how beauty can come out of pain. Instead of seeing people as an annoyance or inconvenience, you see how we are all connected and you try to find the good in others.

Making homemade bread is coming back, and while the convenience of buying a pre-made loaf is readily available, there is nothing like the taste of a warm, homemade loaf right out of the oven. This easy-to-follow recipe is exploding with flavor and is simple to make.
This recipe is quick and easy to make with just a few simple steps. It tastes great on its own, but dipping it in olive oil infused with fresh herbs adds an extra level of flavor.
INGREDIENTS:
• 1 ¾ cups warm water
• 2 ½ teaspoons sugar
• 1 package active dry yeast
• 4 cups flour
• 2 teaspoons salt
• 4 tablespoons olive oil
• Optional:
• Fresh rosemary
• Coarse sea salt
• Fresh pressed garlic
INSTRUCTIONS:
Use a stand mixer with a fitted dough hook, and stir together the water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and stir again. Set mixture aside for 5 minutes. Mixture should be foamy. Next, add the flour and salt and mix on low until a shaggy dough forms. Increase speed and mix for an additional 4-5 minutes. Brush a large bowl with olive oil. Transfer the dough to the bowl and cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a damp towel. Set aside for about 1 to 1 ½ hours until the dough has doubled in size.
Brush a 9x13-inch baking dish with 2 tablespoons of oil. Uncover the dough and rub hands with olive oil. Slide your hands under the dough and fold it onto itself. Continue to work your way around the edge of the bowl, folding the dough onto itself until there is a ball that you can lift from the bowl. Place the dough in the prepared pan and press the dough to the edges. Cover the pan with plastic wrap or a damp towel and set aside to rise for about 45 minutes until the dough has doubled in size.
Preheat the oven to 425°F. Drizzle the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil over the dough. Rub your hands with olive oil and use your fingers to make indentions on the surface of the dough. Sprinkle it with salt and rosemary and any desired toppings. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown.
Where you can have your cake, and eat it too!

• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
• 10 drops of orange essential oil
