DART to the Finish Charity Walk Raises $110,000 Dana’s Angels Research Trust (DART) brought together hundreds friends and supporters for its second annual DART to the Finish charity walk held at Greenwich Point Park on October 5. The beautiful day was perfect for a walk along the shores of Long Island Sound and raised $110,000 for crucial research into the rare childhood disease, Niemann Pick type C, often referred to as “children’s Alzheimers.” Dana’s Angels Research Trust was founded by Andrea and Phil Marella of Greenwich after two of their four children, Dana and Andrew, were diagnosed with Niemann Pick type C disease (NPC). Dana sadly passed away in 2013 at age 19. But Andrew, who just turned 20 in June, is faring better due to being enrolled in a clinical trial to slow or halt the progression of the disease.

GL: CBD IS ALSO A HOT TOPIC RIGHT NOW, WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT LEVEN? CS: We are so excited to partner with LEVEN. Leven is the Dutch word for “life,” and their mission is that the goodness of cannabidiol offers the perfect natural solution to delivering a well-balanced and holistic lifestyle. Studies have shown that consistent CBD use can help with pain relief, anxiety, and sleep. We find that we have similar consumer values which makes it a great fit! GL: HOW SWEATY WILL SOMEONE GET IN THE SAUNA? CS: Sweating is good for you. It is the body’s safe and natural way to heal and stay healthy. Infrared saunas heat the body directly, causing a rise in core temperature. This results in a deep, detoxifying sweat at the cellular level, where toxins reside. Unlike traditional saunas which operate at extremely harsh temperatures, ours is a gentle, therapeutic heat that promotes relaxation and improved sleep. Sunlighten infrared saunas help you receive an invigorating deep-tissue sweat, leaving you fully refreshed after each session.

GOING BEYOND THE SURFACE

a n e w a p p ro a c h to skin health

24

Greenwich Lifestyle | January 2020

JUST OFF GREENWICH AVENUE ABOVE SAKS SHOES, YOU’LL FIND RESPITE FROM THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF THE EVERYDAY. From the first step into the waiting room, it’s evident that Greenwich Point Dermatology is unlike any other medical practice. Bright, airy, and spacious, it feels like something you’d find in Los Angeles — or perhaps Australia, which is where founder and lead dermatologist, Dr. Sarah Dolder was born and raised. Greenwich Point Dermatology is first and foremost a medical dermatology practice, but with a twist. They diagnose and treat medical conditions in patients of all ages, perform skin surgery, and offer skin cancer screenings, perform skin consultations. However, their practice philosophy goes beyond skin deep. And each and every patient touchpoint — from their waiting room details to their skin wellness offerings — reflects that philosophy. THE PHILOSOPHY Beauty goes beyond just the skin. By supporting your body’s natural processes, Greenwich Point Dermatology has seen successful results that complement and extend the lifetime of their medical and cosmetic treatments. Their curated offerings maintain and enhance your skin health for a truly luminous glow. First and foremost, they place the utmost emphasis on providing skin care procedures and products that have been clinically proven safe, effective, and transformative. THE SPACE Their office is unique from any other doctor’s offices. Edible Beauty Tea from Dr. Dolder’s native Australia is always available in the waiting area to promote that glow from within. From Fresh flowers from Stem + Co, to the soothing aroma of SoH candles, and the Aesop soaps in the bathrooms; they thought of everything! Their goal was to create an inspiring, bright, and comfortable space that reflects their brand’s core philosophy. THE LOCATION Dr. Dolder believes that skincare should integrate seamlessly into your every day. Her thought? The less complicated and more accessible caring for our skin is, the more likely we are to do it. Which was the rational behind their convenient location right off Greenwich Avenue. You can pop in to get your skin cancer screening, an LED light therapy treatment, an organic facial, or for healing infrared sauna session after shopping, a workout, or during your power lunch hour.

WO R KO U T S F O R YO U R MOODS NEW YEAR, NEW US. We don’t mean to be cliché, but is there really any better time for working on yourself than when Jan. 1 rolls around—whether you’re focused on your physical health or your mental health? It sure seems like the perfect time, but there will also be days when you’re just not quite feeling it. The holidays are over, the days are shorter and, let’s face it, there’s not really a ton to look forward to until spring sprouts. But, whatever

FEELING ANXIOUS

A regular yoga practice can help to ease anxiety by increasing body awareness, reducing muscle tension, relieving stress and sharpening attention + concentration.

RUNNING There’s a reason people who are active runners describe something called a “runner’s high.” Studies show that aerobic exercises release

mood-boosting endorphins.

BEGINNERS If you want to get into running but aren’t sure where to start, check out a couch-to-5K program to ease into it.

C A S UA L R U N N E R S Challenge yourself by switching up your running routine. Whether you’re changing your route or upping your distance, a new twist could give you a nice refresh.

ENTHUSIASTS Whether you’re into 10Ks or half marathons, consider signing up for a new race and decreasing your time. When your head is full of thoughts, it can get overwhelming. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) provides a break from that with short bursts of 100% focus followed by rest. Here’s a quick circuit.

01 K E T T L E B E L L SW I N G S Do as many reps as possible in 45 seconds, followed by 15 seconds of rest.

02 H I G H K N E E S Climb it out for 45 seconds, followed by 15 seconds of rest.

03 P L A N K Hold your plank for 45 seconds, followed by 15 seconds of rest. Repeat the circuit three times for a quick workout that touches on strength, cardio + core.

INSPIRED BY

Ta k i n g W e l l n e s s To T h e N e x t L e v e l I WILL NEVER FORGET SITTING WITH MY FATHER IN THE DARK, CHESTNUT PANELED HALLS OF OUR SHARED ALMA MATER’S CLUB IN NEW YORK CITY, ABSOLUTELY CRYING MY EYES OUT. It was one of those cries where you can’t catch your breath and there are never enough tissues. I was miserable in my job – it was my first out of college – and worst of all, I had no idea what I wanted to do next, or with my life in general. I felt a dense fog around my career and purpose that felt dark and suffocating. Looking back now, I can see how this evening marked a pivotal shift in my journey. For a few years at that point, and over a decade now, I had been deeply interested in what we now call “wellness” and what I will call a pursuit of deeper wellbeing and health. In my early twenties, I subscribed - whole heartedly and with fascination - to the emerging wellness trends of the day, however fleeting. I began eating all organic plant-based foods and studying nutrition and sustainable food systems, I developed a yoga and mindfulness practice, I drank green juices daily, and when Goop came out – well, I tried everything that Gwyneth suggested. However, even though I was making a dedicated, concerted effort to care for my body and mind by doing all of the things, I continued to feel a disconnection from my Self that no amount of supplements, saunas, or meditation could heal.  I believe there is a moment in all of our journeys where what began as a foray into the wellness world takes a profound turn towards spiritual healing. When the work we have been doing to better our body and mind breaks through a surface layer and begins to fully engage with our soul. That moment for me was when my father handed me a simple self-development book about how we use our energy in our work and relationships. The two separate fields of my interest - my wellbeing and my career search - converged. That simple, unassuming book catalyzed a deep spiritual journey about reconnecting with my inner self and remembering my true calling and purpose.  Over the years, and since I stepped into the work of recon-

necting to my Self in all aspects – mind, body and spirit – I have worked with many therapists, healers, and guides and I have studied both ancient and modern modalities of self-development, spirituality, and soul work. Thousands of hours have passed as I followed my passion and interests, saw my anxiety heal, my fog lift, and my heart open up. New opportunities surfaced and doors opened that had previously been out of my sight and barred. I started to feel like my innate Self again, as I was slowly clearing 30
