I was working 70 to 80 hours a week, not taking lunches, staying very late, coming in on days off, etc., to be sure my office grew as fast and efficiently as possible. After several weeks of this, my boss, Dr. Kay Henry of Crystal Lake, Illinois, sat me down and told me something I'll never forget. She said, "Jennifer, I'm getting really angry with you for working so hard and never taking a break. You do not need to be everything to everyone. You can't save the world." I was speechless. I had never been told not to work so hard. What? And how can you tell me I "can't save the world"?! I most certainly can—can't I?

Fiercely patriotic and grateful, Dana created this special ornamental piece to honor and respect all those who gave/give their time and their lives to ensure the freedom of our great nation, A folded American flag rests on the seat of the special chair, and a yellow ribbon is tied around the back to honor those who are deployed from home. Since it swung its doors open on day one, Town Square Playhouse has been a busy little operation. With the completion of its 14th musical performance, Dana and her team are ready to kick off the upcoming holiday variety show for adults. Deck the Decades promises to tantalize the senses with music, acting and comedy. Guests will witness an array of artists in action. These include a saxophonist, vocalists, a band and even Dana on keyboard. A comedian will also be part of the mix. This one-night-only event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 7:30 p.m. Guests will be able to munch on holiday cookies and sip hot chocolate, all available at the concession stand. Offering opportunities to support quality education for all ages has been the playhouse owner’s way of giving back to the community she loves. The generosity list includes donating musical instruments, providing scholarships to children in need, participating in middle and high school productions, and being partners to individuals and groups who strive to make Fayette County a community that truly welcomes and celebrates the arts.

DAHLONEGA'S MOST MAGICAL TIME OF YEAR
JUST AN HOUR AND A HALF NORTH OF ATLANTA SITS A QUAINT LITTLE TOWN, HUDDLED AGAINST THE NORTH GEORGIA MOUNTAINS. Dahlonega flaunts its beauty yearround with wide open landscapes, historic buildings and a charming public square. What’s most awe-inspiring about this small town is the history that pours out of its cracks and crevices. From the gold rush to the original 19th-century buildings, Dahlonega has stayed true to its origins while incorporating modern delights. Foodies and city dwellers will find paradise in the local restaurant and wine scene. In fact, there’s a Dahlonega wine trail that will take you on a scenic route to six wineries. You may be asking, “when is the best time of year to visit Dahlonega?” Well, it’s pretty amazing all year round, but you won’t want to miss Dahlonega at Christmas. Take a romantic, family or girls trip to capture your holiday cheer.
E N J OY
Old Fashioned Christmas in Dahlonega is just that: old-fashioned, endearing and whimsical. At first sight, it resembles a movie set. Each shop, restaurant and inn pours its heart into decorating for the holiday. Dahlonega’s old-fashioned Christmas committee has ensured festivities fill each day of the month. Christmas “high tea” Tuesdays are held at the 1888 house, a restored Colonial Revival home. Wednesdays will grant you with a winter wine walk, taking you on a tour of five tasting rooms around the public square. Between tastings, stop by Hancock Park for the display of decorated live trees. Quality time can be spent on horse-drawn carriage rides; you’ll see the Dahlonega square under the warmth of a blanket and the comfort of a carriage. Kids will have an opportunity to get one-on-one time with Santa, and carolers decorate the streets.
DW E L L
The Smith House
You can also get your Christmas shopping done as downtown merchants will have extended hours and one-of-a-kind holiday items. Here is a one-stop shop for lodging, dining, shopping and pampering. The history seeping through the walls (and floors) of The Smith House is remarkable. What started as a home for Captain Frank Hall in 1884 was, unbeknownst to him, a literal gold mine. If you head to Dahlonega for Christmas, we highly recommend staying in this iconic building. Contents from the mine are on display for you to see. You can also enjoy family-style Southern meals and relaxing moments at the Jolie Day Spa and Salon.

FE AST It wouldn’t be a trip to Dahlonega without stopping at one of its famous wineries. At Montaluce Winery and Restaurant, you will indulge in both the food and wine. You can also spend an entire day partaking in wine hikes, cooking classes and special events. The Montaluce grounds are spectacular with vast countryside and backdrops of the North Georgia mountains. On the 1.8-mile wine hike through the vineyard, you will have the opportunity to relish in the beauty while learning about the winemaking process. The Montaluce restaurant has an extensive menu from brunch to desserts. Head there for an afternoon wine hike and tasting, followed by dinner. cer journey is one thing that influenced Derrick’s entry into politics. A 10-year stint in the corporate world followed
his retirement from the Navy, but when Michelle became ill, he took time off from work to care for her and never returned. Noting that not everyone had the great healthcare he and Michelle had through the military, he says, “God put me in the right place to hear the stories of other families. Something needed to be done to help mitigate the traumatic experiences citizens were dealing with around healthcare. I realized I could make a difference.” A Syracuse, New York, native with deep family roots in Georgia, Derrick has lived in Tyrone since 2004 and ran unsuccessfully for mayor twice. He chuckles remembering Michelle’s reaction when he decided to run for the state office to which he was elected in 2016. Speaking in her Naval officer voice, she said, “Mr. Jackson, this is your third time running. If you and God don’t get it this time, then politics is not for you.” Derrick says understanding his blessings and staying busy have helped him cope with the loss of Michelle. “Every day, I wake up with my family on my mind. I’ve got to be there for my three daughters and my grandson.” The Jacksons' oldest daughter, Taylor, is a medical student at Meharry College in Nashville. Their middle daughter, Tamera, a junior in college, and her son, Carter David Jackson, and Trinity, a Sandy Creek High School sophomore, still live at home. “They had an amazing mom,” Derrick says. “They are her spirit.” When the legislature isn’t in session, Derrick has plenty of non-legislative duties to keep him busy including giving eulogies, helping kids at risk for losing HOPE scholarships, staying in touch with constit-

INCREASE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFIT, AND ONE THING TO CONSIDER IS TO DELAY RECEIVING THOSE BENEFITS. Most boomers know they’ll get a reduced benefit if they apply at 62 and a higher benefit if they wait until 70. The difference in these amounts, which are shown on your social security statement, initially doesn’t seem very large, but you might be surprised. If you project those benefits over a lifetime (age 90), incorporating the annual cost of living adjustments (COLA’s), the difference between applying at 62 and 70 expands enormously. Let’s take the case of John, a maximum earner, who is 62 years old. His benefit at full retirement age (66 years and 6 months) is about $2,800 a month. Let’s look at two other scenarios:
Patience : It Just Might Pay Off ARTICLE RAY DUNLAP, CFP, AIF
1. 2.
If he takes his benefit at 62, he’ll receive 72½% of $2,800, or $2,030 per month. And, this amount could further be reduced if John is still working. But, should he delay to age 70, his monthly check will be 128% of $2,800, or $3,584.Assuming an annual 2.6% COLA (the historical average), the cumulative difference is noteworthy.
Claiming at 62, by age 90 he will have received $936,702 with an ending monthly benefit of $3,957. Filing at 70 gets him $1,653,763, with a final monthly amount of $6,986. That is a significant difference that should be worth considering. Plus, claiming at 70 always maximizes the spousal survivor benefit. It’s important to recognize that, while we’ve outlined some general rules of thumb in this article, there’s no guarantee this strategy works within the context of your overall financial plan and retirement goals. For customized help, visit a financial adviser who has the calculation tools necessary to analyze your individual Social Security claiming strategy.
