As we begin 2020, a new decade, we set goals for what we want our future selves to be like and look like. We take a glance back at where we have been and what we have done, and we try to remember to extend ourselves grace. January is a time to cleanse, to start fresh and not dwell on who we were 12 months ago. Last year, we shared a trip to Maui and how being in, on or around water can cleanse the mind, body and soul. In this issue, you can reboot and

O n T h e Pat h To W e l l n e s s DR. TIM ZITTLE, OWNER OF TREEHIVE CHIROPRACTIC IN PARKER, SAYS HE STRIVES EVERY DAY TO HELP PEOPLE LIVE PAIN-FREE LIVES AND TAKE CHARGE OF THEIR HEALTH, SOMETHING HE WORKS ON PERSONALLY EVERY DAY. “My mission is to see people at their best. I’m the happiest and most fulfilled when I see the people around me achieving their potential in their life,” Dr. Tim says. You can find him on Instagram serenading his followers on his guitar, or adventuring on a mountain trail, or journaling at a coffee shop. And most often you’ll catch glimpses of his constant companion, his service dog Reese, the only clue that Dr. Tim has suffered from anxiety. “She goes with me everywhere,” Dr. Tim says. “I would say she’s helped me in ways I wouldn’t have thought. Instead of putting all of my energy into my business, she forces me to exercise, which is really good for anxiety and depression. She forces me to socialize.” In college, Dr. Tim had his first health scare when he started experiencing debilitating headaches and vertigo. Initially, doctors thought he may have a brain tumor, but he was diagnosed with a severe misalignment in his spine and recovered after months of chiropractic care. Through it all, Dr. Tim says, he realized that he was overloaded with his doctoral program and working two jobs. “If there’s such a thing as negative self-care, I was doing it,” Dr. Tim says. “As a 20 year old, I had no symptoms, I looked great and felt great and then overnight I realized if I don’t have my health I have nothing. That’s why it’s important to maintain health, instead of waiting until something’s broken.” Later, when starting a clinic in Ohio, Dr. Tim realized his workaholic tendencies again were taking their toll. “If I wasn’t at work, I was afraid to come out of my home, afraid to go to the grocery store. I didn’t want to leave for any reason,” Dr. Tim says. “I wasn’t building relationships or community. My hair started falling out, I was losing weight and not sleeping.” Dr. Tim says his anxiety was causing him to run at 150 percent at all times, which was wearing him down.
DR. TIM ZITTLE OF TREEHIVE CHIROPRACTIC USES SELF-CARE PRACTICES AND CONSTANT COMPANION REESE TO WORK ON MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGES
“It made me a machine. When everyone else looks at it, they think, ‘Wow, look at this guy, he’s amazing.’ ” Dr. Tim says. “My business had become my life. Sometimes the best parts of us can become the worst parts of us.” For a time, Dr. Tim hid his mental health struggles, even though he had friends and patients who confided that they were struggling with similar issues. Now, he uses his role as a trusted health care professional to be open about his own mental health struggles and show his patients that this is a health challenge that can be managed through transparency, healthy living and doing the hard work daily. 12

“Hey, here’s how I’m navigating my health challenges and struggles and you can do it too,” he says. Self-care is a priority for Dr. Tim, who loves to make music, exercise, read and journal.
“It’s just us living out our core values,” he says. Dr. Tim says even as a kid he knew he wanted to help people for a living. His mother was a nurse/midwife and his father was in the mortuary business.

W h at d o e s h e a lt h y m e a n to yo u ? Health is a complete state of being, not just the absence of sickness and disease. When someone is physically, mentally and emotionally functioning at a high level — able to do what they love with whom they love — that's the ultimate picture of health. It goes so far beyond just feeling well or looking well. It's about functioning well and being able to do so in every area of life.

AT THE ZAPATA RANCH, OWNED BY THE NATURE CONSERVANCY AND MANAGED BY RANCHLANDS, KATE MATHESON WAKES UP EVERY MORNING TO A VIEW OF THE MAJESTIC SANGRE DE CRISTO PEAKS OUT ONE WINDOW AND THE GREAT SAND DUNES NATIONAL PARK OUT THE OTHER. She considers herself one lucky woman. “Contributing to and working as part of something much bigger than myself is rewarding. It’s an incredible honor to be a steward and manager of Zapata Ranch,” Kate says. “Ranchlands focuses on the preservation and conservation of these large landscapes and the Western lifestyle.” Ranchlands is a conservation-focused ranch management company that also offers guest stays at the Zapata, where Kate lives, and the Chico Basin Ranch, which is 30 minutes south of Colorado Springs.

TR AVEL DESTINATION (CONTINUED)
Ranchlands Stays is the hospitality program that includes special weeklong workshops and clinics at both properties. You’ll find painting workshops with acclaimed artist Jill Soukup, and horsemanship clinics from famed cowboy Cam Schryver. There’s photography, hiking, birding and leather making. And if you want your family to get their hands dirty on an old-school cowboy adventure, there’s a stay for that as well. “A stay on either ranch is an incredible insight into these big landscapes. You get to feel, ride, hike, smell, touch, experience these very, very special places,” Kate says. “I think that’s the thing people walk away with is the privilege of being able to have done that.” Most stays include tent camps complete with hot showers, beds, a cook and chef-prepared meals. At the Zapata, where you can book a customized stay to include horseback rides in the Great Sand Dunes or among the huge wild bison herd, you’ll find the dark night skies that have been designated as an International Dark Sky Park, and catch a glimpse of the abundant wildlife including elk, coyotes, birds of prey, porcupines and antelope. “There’s also a really amazing ranch-to-table food program,” Kate says. The Chico Basin Ranch offers a more rustic experience, where you’ll find yourself part of the work crew rounding up horses and working cattle, making your own breakfasts and sack lunches to eat on the trail, and joining the crew in their homes for dinner. “It’s the more working ranch experience,” Kate says. A stay at one of the Ranchlands properties is an educational outdoor experience unlike any other.

“It really ticks all the boxes,” Kate says. “It’s about trying new things with your friends or family, and all of you learning at the same time. It’s an incredible bonding experience.” Kate says one of the first things most guests notice is the quiet and dark, a reward for the hyper-connected modern American. Zapata and Chico offer great American landscapes — from the highest mountain peaks to the wide-open prairie plains — that are constantly evolving. “It’s a living, breathing, moving, changing place of incredible beauty.” MORE ABOUT RANCHLANDS Ranchlands is a conservation-focused ranch management company that runs fullscale cattle operations on five ranches in three states. Ranchlands offers guest stays and special week-long workshops at the Zapata Ranch, a 103,000-acre ranch owned by The Nature Conservancy in the San Luis Valley; as well as the Chico Basin Ranch, an 87,000-acre ranch southeast of Colorado Springs owned by the Colorado State Land Board. Ranchlands also hosts thousands of school children each year on field trips; the Ranchlands Annual Art Show at The Nature Conservancy in Denver; and a concert each summer on the Chico that draws about 450 people. The Ranchlands Mercantile offers made-on-site leather goods. @ranchlands To book a Ranchlands Stay, or learn more about Ranchlands: Ranchlands.com

BEFORE, THIS MASTER BATHROOM FELT CRAMPED, WITH A LARGE BOX TUB HIDDEN IN THE CORNER. But designer and general contractor Eryn Caskey of A Rustic Butterfly says a complete layout change made a standalone soaker tub centerstage while making the room appear more spacious. “My favorite thing about this bathroom is the layout,” she says. “We took an otherwise awkward design, relocated the tub making it the focal point in the room and utilized as much space as we could to build a large shower enclosure.” The clean white shaker cabinets with quartz and shiplap make the space comfortable and inviting but keeps it simple and elegant. Every detail was looked after all the way down to the clean and somewhat modern black fixtures, the tiled wood-look floor, large white subway tiles in the shower and the hexagon marble on the shower floor. “Even planning finishing touches made me love this room even more,” Eryn says. “Bath salts, apothecary jars and white towels are a must for a spa feeling.” Eryn says go with your gut in picking out fixtures for your master bath. “Over-thinking and looking at too many choices oftentimes takes the fun out of planning and causes undue stress,” she says. Some other tips for picking out serene fixtures and trimmings for your master bath: + Look for timeless styles and clean lines, keeping it simple makes it a much cleaner and enjoyable space. + For tile, larger format tiles give a more spacious and luxurious feel. + Nothing says relaxation like a long warm bath, so go for that stand-alone soaker tub. + Opt for a large shower enclosure with as much glass as possible. + Pair warm and cool. Whether it be on the walls in the paint color or the floors, bring something organic and natural into the space to break up all of the smooth white. — Eryn Caskey is owner of A Rustic Butterfly, an interior design and general contracting firm. WO R KO U T S F O R YO U R MOODS NEW YEAR, NEW US. We don’t mean to be cliché, but is there really any better time for working on yourself than when Jan. 1 rolls around—whether you’re focused on your physical health or your mental health?
