Just in time for those January resolutions, we hope this issue will inspire you to start the year off right. Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

WALKING OUT THE DOORS OF THE FAIRMONT CHATEAU LAKE LOUISE IS AS CLOSE AS ONE COULD GET TO STEPPING THROUGH THE WARDROBE WITH LUCY AND HER SIBLINGS AND FINDING NARNIA ON THE OTHER SIDE. There is a magical quality to these mountains that is palpable, which provide no greater back drop to get in touch with yourself. A slow burning exists in us all, creating a fire deep within for change, for a new way living. A retreat can be that starting point. The gift we give ourselves for a job well done, or for encouragement to keep going through a difficult time. Sometimes it is the gentle nudge we need to pull us forward, upward or out of the usual place we have been living in. Individually we are seeking something unique out of a retreat; it could be a change of heart, a slowing down, a place to get present, a new way of looking at the world. A wellness retreat can be a jumping-off point to CONTINUED >

march forward with courage and follow the direction your heart is pushing you. Whatever the retreat is offering, you will leave undoubtedly feeling more aligned with who you are, grounded in the journey that brought you to this point. Lake Louise is “renowned as the birthplace of Canadian mountaineering.” Throughout the years, thousands of locals and visitors were taught to climb and, later, ski by Swiss mountaineers. The mountain guides were brought there by the Canadian Pacific Railway between 1899 and 1954 to teach safe climbing techniques to thousands of climbers. In the beginning, the general manager of Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), Sir William Cornelius Van Horne, envisioned “a hotel for the outdoor adventurer and alpinist.” From the very start CPR responded to the growing interest in mountaineering by fostering tourism in the Rocky Mountains. A simple, onestory log cabin was built as the first accommodation in 1890 at the shore of Lake Louise. A far contrast to the grand, luxury hotel that stands today with over 548 rooms. Originally only open in the summer months, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is now a year-round resort offering world-class skiing, mountaineering, hiking, canoeing, camps for children, spas, fishing, retreats and fine dining. The resort is located in Alberta, Canada in the heart of Banff National Park, in a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is far more than a luxury hotel, it is now a major part of Canada’s history. Recognizing the need that many travelers have to detox their mind as well as their body, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise has introduced a broad range of wellness retreats held in the spring and fall. They partnered with some of the industry’s thought leaders, “from Yoga

Masters, to leading creativity coaches; from mind body medical doctors to Zen Masters and award-winning wellness authors, these experts will free your creativity guide you toward greater balance and teach you to live in the moment.” The retreats offered are not only for physical renewal, but also for mind and spirit. Every retreat offered at the mountain resort is all-inclusive, creating a worry-free experience for those attending. This is reflected in the beautifully prepared food, luxury accommodations and the organized timeline of the retreat itself. Every detail has been thoughtfully prepared and the enjoyment of your stay is the Fairmont staff’s top priority. You will feel like royalty as a guest (literally – dozens of royals have stayed at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, from King Edward VII of Wales, Prince Rainier of Monaco, Queen Elizabeth ll, Prince Philip and Queen Margrethe of Denmark). The architecture of the hotel itself is designed to enhance its visitors’ exposure to the outdoors. The panoramic views from the mountain resort remind guests of nature’s presence; her beauty, her nobility, her splendor, her power to grip and sway the human heart. The mountains are a place of stillness, divine inspiration and peak spirituality, creating a perfect setting for reflection. Only in stillness can you discover the hidden depths of your true nature. Living a life of Wellness is the ultimate process of change and growth. There is no better way to turn newly gained knowledge into sustainable change than embarking on a R&R getaway to reconnect with your path and purpose, along with a like minded community. The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise encapsulates the history and majesty of the Canadian Rockies while offering some of the best global wellness retreats to escape to.

IF YOU’RE LIKE ME, YOU’VE NO DOUBT NOTICED THE HIMALAYAN SEA SALT CRAZE. In fact, my parents have not just one, but two large, peach-colored, mineral-rich jagged slabs in their home. One downstairs in the living area and one in their bedroom. They purchased theirs several years ago from a friend of a friend, but you can find them everywhere – and in all shapes and sizes. They are heavy pieces and beautiful to the eye, and also are reported to act as a mechanism for purifying and healing the body. Queue halotherapy, also known as salt therapy. Salt Mine Arium is Bellevue’s only spa fully dedicated to salt therapy and it opened its doors in 2013. Salt therapy, or halotherapy, is the providing of microfine particles of salt to the body via the skin and lungs inside of a large, arid space. While other treatments are available, salt therapy is the signature treatment offered at the spa. A salt therapy treatment session is an amazing meditative and relaxing experience. Afterwards, many recipients may or may not experience a slight cough or tickle in their throats. The children’s room features a salt “sand box” which the children can sit and play with while the parents relax. This feature allows the benefits of salt therapy to be enjoyed by the entire family. P r o G low P r ot e i n PAULINE HAUGEN, FOUNDER OF PROWGLOW PROTEIN AND OWNER OF HIGHER HEALTH SPINE AND SPORT, BREAKS DOWN THE IMPORTANCE OF ADDING SUPPLEMENTS INTO YOUR WELLNESS ROUTINE TO MAXIMIZE YOUR HEALTH GOALS AND PROPERLY FUEL YOUR PERSONAL LIFESTYLE. WHAT DOES WELLNESS MEAN TO YOU? Wellness is a holistic approach that starts from the inside out. There are so many factors to living a healthy lifestyle, and when we neglect pieces of this puzzle, it eventually reveals itself through signs of pain. Here at Higher Health Spine and Sport, we believe in complete wellness, starting with nutrition all the way to preventive chiropractic services and holistic approaches. TELL US ABOUT PROGLOW AND THE INSPIRATION BEHIND IT. ProGlow Protein was a concept that fit in precisely with our wellness prerogative, which is preventive medicine and eliminating pain holistically. The difference between ProGlow and other overthe-counter supplements is that it is pharmaceutical-grade. By USP standards, pharma-grade products must be at least 99 percent pure, meaning the main ingredients are natural sources that do not contain binders or fillers such as cork, dyes or unknown substances (yes, these things do exist!). Less than 3 percent of nutritional supplements on the market are pharmaceutical-grade, which is why pure products like ProGlow and ProFunction [ProGlow’s brother brand] may cost a bit more due to the strenuous regulations and quality control that ensure products are clean and pure. Investing in your health is the most valuable investment you can make in your lifetime, which is why we promote the best quality products that will absorb properly, giving you the nutrients that fuel your lifestyle. WHAT ARE SUPPLEMENTS YOU’D RECOMMEND FOR MEN AND WOMEN TO GET THE NEW YEAR OFF TO A GREAT START?

THE BENEFITS OF ADDING HIGH-GRADE SUPPLEMENTS TO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE

Each supplement is designed for different lifestyles, so they are really great in that you can pick and choose what works best for you. Some of my go-tos are Calm & Fit, which is a magnesium supplement blend that is designed to be an end-of-day wine alternative that will help you sleep better and reduce tummy bloating. It has a great-tasting cherry flavor, so we even have yummy Calm & Fit cocktail ideas. 30

FEELING ANXIOUS

A regular yoga practice can help to ease anxiety by increasing body awareness, reducing muscle tension, relieving stress and sharpening attention + concentration.

01 R AG D O L L Ragdoll pose is great for relaxation and to release tension. Stand tall + reach your arms up, then allow them to fall gently toward the floor. as you bend over

02 C H I L D ’ S P O S E This calming and restorative pose is a common beginner’s position. Starting from your knees, sit back on your heels then walk your arms forward, bringing your torso down until you can rest your forehead on the floor.

RUNNING There’s a reason people who are active runners describe something called a “runner’s high.” Studies show that aerobic exercises release

mood-boosting endorphins.

BEGINNERS If you want to get into running but aren’t sure where to start, check out a couch-to-5K program to ease into it.

C A S UA L R U N N E R S Challenge yourself by switching up your running routine. Whether you’re changing your route or upping your distance, a new twist could give you a nice refresh.

ENTHUSIASTS Whether you’re into 10Ks or half marathons, consider signing up for a new race and decreasing your time. When your head is full of thoughts, it can get overwhelming. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) provides a break from that with short bursts of 100% focus followed by rest. Here’s a quick circuit.

01 K E T T L E B E L L SW I N G S Do as many reps as possible in 45 seconds, followed by 15 seconds of rest.

02 H I G H K N E E S Climb it out for 45 seconds, followed by 15 seconds of rest.

03 P L A N K Hold your plank for 45 seconds, followed by 15 seconds of rest. Repeat the circuit three times for a quick workout that touches on strength, cardio + core.
