Noting that Y2K aesthetic clothing is popular, it’s been distinctive this year and was inspired by the mid-1990s and early 2000s when the internet became more popular, during the dot-com boom. This style is typically futuristic in nature with a slightly retro edge – think shiny materials, chunky sneakers, pleated skirts, baguette bags, and colorful sunglasses. All fun elements to try out.

Pixie Salon’s client-first focus is seen in everything they do. Educated at Vidal Sassoon in Los Angeles and mentored by Sally Rodgerson of SR Education, owner Shannon McIntyre envisioned the salon as a welcoming, yet serene, spot for haircuts, color, and styling for men, women and children of all ages. Modeled after Vidal Sassoon’s style ideology, the salon also offers waxing and facials.

Shannon remembers styling her Barbie dolls’ hair as a child, want ing to be a hairstylist. Having disliked her own hair, she recalls how amazing she felt after seeing it transformed at the salon. These days, the Pennington-based hairstylist and salon owner loves making her clients feel stylish, learning new techniques, and keeping up with the trends. “I focus on doing all different types of hair and determining how I can make the clients feel their best,” she explains. She personalizes her services, asking clients what they like and dislike about their hair before developing a plan. A proponent of continuing education, Shannon interestingly holds a degree in special education. Although she longed to be a hairstylist, her parents had other ideas: At their urging, she went to college and earned a bachelor’s degree. After two years, however, she left teaching and headed to Los Angeles to study at Vidal Sassoon and follow her passion.

"When back surgery stalled my career, I real ized, perhaps, that fashion and entertainment were not my destiny, after all," Shannon says. Yet, she remained inspired from her experiences and decided to put to use all she'd learned to benefit her clients.
Pixie’s March 2022 move to 21 West Delaware Ave., just a couple doors down from its previous location, makes Shannon’s vision fully realized. “It feels like a community now,” she says of the new open space and caring people she works with daily whose goal is to make others look and feel their best.
Working at several salons while being mentored by her former cosmetology instructor-turned-en trepreneur, Shannon says she felt unfulfilled and inspired to break out on her own with her own salon. Possessing the confidence she needed to turn her dream into reality, she opened Pixie Salon during July 2015 at 23 West Delaware Ave., based on her vision of a welcoming, client-focused salon for haircuts, styling and color for all ages. Her clients, she adds, range in age from 2 to 92 years.
The experience opened her eyes to industry opportunities she’d never considered – from styl ing celebrities’ hair on set to preparing models for photo shoots. After graduating and becoming licensed, the fledgling stylist headed back east, landing opportunities with Ralph Lauren and New York Fashion Week.

“If someone doesn’t feel amazing after I work with them,” she says, “I feel like I haven’t done my job.”
While no longer a classroom teacher, Shannon credits her teaching background for her mentoring skills, saying, “I definitely don’t regret it.”

For this business owner, life has come full cir cle. She says she loves making her clients happy and watching her stylists perfect their craft, while involving herself in multiple aspects of the indus try. “Working behind the chair was never going to be enough for me,” she explains.
Each day, Shannon hopes clients walk out the door feeling fabulous — just as she had all those years ago.

Modeled after Vidal Sassoon’s style ideology of "structured haircuts and clean lines," Pixie Salon offers a supportive environment for stylists to develop their craft, one that requires six months to a year of training.
She’s excited for what's new: The salon began offering waxing in March and facials in August. And, to stay true to her vision for a serene setting, the salon will be open two Mondays each month to prevent overcrowding.

TREND SETTER | BEAUTY Beauty Experts ARTICLE BY ERICA BROOKE GORDON Salon/Spa Brings NYC Style And Makeup Expertise To Lambertville 16

ZanyaSpaSalon.com609.773.0770
Coming from where stylists generally focus in one area, Zanya says she figured some must desire this type of expertise in Hopewell Valley without going to the Big Apple. Seek they did.
In time, what’s now known as Zanya Spa/Salon relocated to the historic Laceworks Building in Lambertville overlooking the Delaware River, setting the tone for satisfying experiences. Little things make big differences, Zanya says, such as giving complimentary makeup touch-ups. The salon's mineral makeup, including hydrating lipsticks, contains high-quality ingredients. “Most people want cleaner skin,” she says, calling out their combined hypo allergenic tinted moisturizer, sunscreen and antioxidant.
Zanya Spa/Salon is positioned as the region’s pre mier place for beauty. After leaving an established, 15-year professional following in New York, makeup artist and stylist Zanya Gissler – who's done hair and makeup for celebrities, including Michael Kors, Cindy Crawford and Brooke Shields – created an expert team in Lambertville, catering to discriminating clientele seeking exceptional experiences.
Also provided are monthly makeup bag redos, makeup for special events and professional head shots, and a program for girls under 14 years old. On the horizon, she says, are a new makeup line and new makeup artist to serve as in-house expert, a profes sional who previously worked at Barney’s New York.
Makeup services include individual applications, workshops and events. Eye makeup offerings include 30-minute eye makeup applications to make the eyes “pop.” Zanya says they excel at eyelashes and lash extensions, with options from dramatic individual lashes to strip lashes for a “fuller, more obvious look that suits everyone.”
For makeup tips, Zanya rattles off a few, from lipliner usage (“fill your entire lips with waterproof gel lip liner to provide a foundation so your lipstick stays neat”) to foundation selection (“test on the neck and in daylight to ensure a clear match”). She recom mends facials starting from the teenage years. And, she believes in discovering the root of skincare issues, not covering up with heavy makeup.
Over time, Zanya envisioned enhancing the atmo sphere, offerings and experience with a spa, including hair coloring/cutting/styling, nails, makeup, lashes, wax ing, massage, skincare and personal services. "We hope clients receive memorable experiences and feel they’re on vacation, transported far from everyday," she explains.
“Our work speaks for itself,” she says, reflecting on many compliments regarding amazing service. “It means so much to me that my staff is so kind and car ing and sensitive to how clients feel,” she adds. This consistent experience is based on Zanya's unique training model. Rather than hiring employees from other salons, her apprenticeship program for cosmetology graduates directly trains to set stan dards. Apprentices rotate through services before choosing a focus. This enables Zanya and budding beauty professionals to learn their strengths and passions. Some are even hired full-time, such as lead esthetician Nicole Gross. This approach transforms her clients’ look and employees’ lives, she says. In the long term, this invest ment pays off, creating careers for people who truly love what they do – some staying a decade or longer.
Zanya exudes gratitude. “I’m able to express my creativity and make someone’s day,” she says. “It’s really a gift to have the job we have.”
In 2004, she opened Zanya Salon in nearby New Hope, employing stylists focused solely on services they love, because from her perspective, to be suc cessful, “you have to be 100% comfortable with what you’reStartingdoing.”as a four-chair salon, it quickly grew, accelerated by Zanya’s fashion and commercial work experience. “It’s helped so much because of the level of expertise I was surrounded by all the time, and it’s helped me strive for that,” she says.

Sam makes sure each piece offered for sale — whether furniture, lighting, ceramics, fiber art sculptures or other fine art pieces — fits his meticulous, discriminating fondness for 20th century Scandinavian interior décor items. "Many of our pieces appear modest, but are finely made. Some are hand-carved. They're all vintage and authentic," says Sam. "I believe they embody a distinct gracefulness. I would call our style warm modernism."
Form + Matter Modern items are purchased for both residential and commercial settings. Furniture from the Modern Era refers to furniture produced from the late 19th century through the present, based on modern influences, styles and techniques. Post-World War II ideals of cutting excess, commodification and practicality of materials in design heavily influenced the aesthetic of this type of furniture. Sam says he especially seeks out pieces that were made between 1890 and 1975.
About 18 years ago, Sam says he was studying the philosophy of physics, approaches and history when he became drawn to, and slightly obsessed with, Scandinavian design. "I was really impressed with its balanced, minimalist effect. It's all about efficiency. I began 22

In many ways, Sam is still carrying that modern movement banner by selling pieces made of teak and rosewood, from as far back as 1910.
Sam says Denmark has a centuries-old cabinetmaking craft tradition, and that during the 1920s-1940s, one of the most coveted professions was to become a journeyman joiner, with cabinetmaking a most prestigious career path for Scandinavian youth. "They were so serious about it, they used to teach these skills in elementary school instead of P.E. Some of those pursuing this career eventually branched out into becoming architects," he shares.

HOT SPOT | LIFE + CULTURE ECO ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GREGG YUPANKI BAUTISTA DREAMS 'Ethical Fashion Brands Should Not Be A Secret' Declares New Hopewell Business Owner COMING TRUE 26

planet, joining the community of women-owned businesses in Downtown Hopewell, and spending my days with the sweet Mahbubeh," she adds.
From where did the intimate business name derive?
"I like to see the research on a brand's supply chain. We proudly carry brands, such as Known Supply, which are founded in the belief that a job can change a life. They provide fair wages, dignity and pathways out of poverty," she says.
Tucked within Mahbubeh's Antiques at 35 W. Broad Street in Hopewell is a new apparel and lifestyle prod ucts boutique launched in the spirit of full sustainability.
Breona confides that "Wull" is a Scottish variant of words that mean "will, desire, wish, intentions and the power to control one's actions" and sounds like the sus tainable fabric, wool. Oak symbolizes strength, beauty, power, shelter, ecosystem, history connections, knowl edge, endurance, nourishment and healing. Breona believes everyone has the power to make choices that are good for health, happiness and the environment. "I've seen potential sprouting in the coming together of community, through shared knowledge, wisdom of tradition and the collective desire to grow. Too often we skip a few steps, perceive failure and burnout, because we so easily forget that community starts within individuals," she says.
"I'm looking forward to sharing with more cus tomers the difference between ethical slow fashion brands versus the brands that are damaging our "The biggest comment we get from customers is the luxurious texture of the clothing in the shop. As a society, we've all been wearing synthetic fabrics made from plastic for so long, that feeling a heavy-weight organic cotton denim, or trying on a lightweight and unique linen jacket, is like a brand-new experience."
In addition to clothing from sustainable fabric, Wull & Oak offers clean skincare products, cosmetics with vegan ingredients, clay masks, soaps, body oils, soy wax candles, outdoor candles, incense sticks and natural lip balms.
Wull & Oak packs almost all orders in reused boxes and materials. If new packing supplies are needed, Breona says she has partnered with EcoEnclose for 100% post-consumer, recycled and biodegrad able Kraft paper products. Wull & Oak labels, tags and strings can simply be added to paper recycling or thrown into compost bins.
"Size inclusivity is also vital," agrees Breona.
Breona Pirrone, founder and owner of Wull & Oak, intentionally partners with local artisans and design ers that create sustainable products and organic apparel. "Hopewell is the perfect community of mindful citizens who see the value in protecting our environment, and I'm so thankful for the support of my neighbors," she says.

"It's also fun that you can find the name of the maker of your garment on the inside tag on all Known Supply clothing."
Breona says she will continue to seek out apparel made from certain practices, such as using organic plant based textiles, creating with dead stock fabric, reusing recycled materi als, paying livable wages to their work ers, ensuring ethical work conditions, planting trees with every purchase, giving back to credible charities, and creating in small batches to avoid overproduction and waste.
"Before starting Wull & Oak, I had a career in education. I hope to apply my skills as an educator to share knowledge about how we can make more sustainable everyday decisions to benefit the health of our planet and our own future," she says.

Also found at Amy's location is ThinkForm, an archi tectural firm, and A Step in Stone, a designer tile show room. The commercial space was renovated by Brick Farm Market and Tavern owner Jon McConaughy.
Amy says the showroom items now are gradu ally switching to fall tones, and particularly holiday decorating ideas and products. "Laying out a mix of pat terns, tiles and fabrics is how we build on our vision. We especially love decorating for Thanksgiving, applying the beauty that autumn brings, and showing what homes can look like," she adds.
"Our overall approach starts with building authentic relationships. We can work with clients from the ground up for interior design services, handling kitchens, bed rooms or whole houses. It really depends on each project. We also assist with new color palettes or freshening up a room with pillows, for example," Amy says. "We make houses into homes," she expresses with a smile.
