It's Foodie Time in Hendersonville!
October - \äk-’tō-ber\ (noun) – 1. The 10th month of the Gregorian calendar.
Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary
As always, the dictionary definition of October is factually correct, but rather boring. Here at Hendersonville Lifestyle, we choose to define it with a little bit more elan.
For example, when we think about the month, we think of fun times filled with food, football, festivals and falling leaves. October also brings cool, crisp weather and dazzling sunsets, which are perfect for making merry with friends and family around a warm firepit while enjoying special meals and our favorite pumpkin-spiced quaffs. At the end of the month, October also kicks off the holiday season with Halloween, bringing out hordes of young trick or treaters eager to fill their pumpkins with delectable, sweet treats.
Do you see what we did here?
We started out talking about football and cool weather, and then we jumped over to two of our favorite pastimes – eating and drinking. Whenever great food and drinks are mentioned, your Hendersonville Lifestyle team is sure to be around. As always, our October issue is all about the epicurean pleasures that make life just a little more fun as we sprint toward the end of the year.
This month, we take you on a food and drink journey that is sure to satisfy the tastes of the most discerning diners.
We start our sojourn at one of our favorite local restaurants where we recently celebrated the eighth anniversary of Hendersonville Lifestyle with a lot of our friends and family, as well as one very special guest.
Next, we check out a new local festival that showcased some of the most popular businesses around – gourmet food trucks.
Continuing, we explore how the Sumner County community is coming together to combat food insecurity – one Blessing Box at a time.
Finally, we bring you a buyer’s guide that showcases some of the most popular craft cocktail recipe books around, just in time to help you prepare perfect drinks this holiday season.
Thirsty? Check.
Hungry? Check.
Now it’s time to let our inner foodies take over so that we can enjoy one of our favorite months!
We’ll see you soon,

““Thanks to all our readers, story subjects and advertisers for all of your support over the past eight years.”
Lynn Bowles, Publisher
In July, Hendersonville Lifestyle magazine reached a significant milestone – eight years of covering the people, places and things that shape everyday life in the City by the Lake. In recognition of this accomplishment, publisher Lynn Bowles held a special celebration on Aug. 22.
Along with the Lifestyle team, a large contingent of supporters from the Hendersonville Chamber also attended the event which was held at Safari’s Brick Oven & Grille. Guests were treated to a feast of heavy hors d’oeuvres along with Safari’s famous cocktail, Jungle Tea.
During the celebration, Lynn thanked editor Rick Murray for his contributions to the success of the magazine. He also expressed his gratitude to his wife Towana and Rick’s wife Debbie for their unwavering support and encouragement. He also acknowledged many others who have helped the magazine grow.

Hendersonville Lifestyle
From our first issue in Aug. 2016, Hendersonville Lifestyle has been dedicated to keeping our readers up to date about the people, places and events that make the City by the Lake such a wonderful place in which to live, work and play. As we continue into our 9th year, we remain committed to telling the story of Hendersonville and Sumner County.
“Thanks to all our readers, story subjects and advertisers for all of your support over the past eight years,” said Lynn. “I also want to thank our corporate team –we couldn’t do what we do without them.”
As the celebration was in full swing, a surprise guest suddenly appeared to the delight of crowd. Dressed in a white jumpsuit trimmed in gold and black, local Elvis tribute artist Brook Wright performed several songs which had been made famous by the original King himself.
At the end, several of the guests took advantage of the regal appearance to grab photos before the celebration was over.

GOURMET MOBILE DINING SHOWCASED AT INAUGURAL FOOD TRUCK FESTIVAL
Tender ribs are popular entrees offered by many food trucks.
Not many years ago, most people considered food trucks to be little more than mobile versions of high school football concession stands. The menu fare was typically overpriced and sparce, containing only minimal basics such as hamburgers, hotdogs, popcorn and soft drinks.
Fortunately, those days are gone.
Today’s food trucks are rolling culinary marvels, offering tasty treats that are sure to delight any hardcore foodie. From spicy barbecue to vegan delicacies to fresh lobster, local food truck vendors have established themselves as real alternatives to traditional brick and mortar eateries. Many of the prominent truck operators have built up large followings of customers who routinely follow them from site to site throughout each year.

Adult beverages are available at many food truck events.
Great food and great service are behind the rise in food truck popularity.
Along with freshly grilled meats and veggies, refreshing desserts are popular food truck draws.
In recognition of this phenomenon, Hendersonville hosted the inaugural Middle Tennessee Food Truck Festival at Veterans Park on Saturday evening, Aug. 17. During the event, the air was filled with the lush, sweet aromas of fresh cuts of meat and locally grown vegetables being grilled to perfection. Twenty-one of the area’s finest food truck vendors were on hand serving up delicious entrees, sides and desserts to a large crowd of hungry diners.
The festival was the idea of local businessman Jake Kearney, the co-owner of Frosted Luau, an upscale mobile dessert business that specializes in fruit-flavored soft serve ice cream and sorbet. Since 2022, Frosted Luau has become a staple at events all around the region. During that time, Kearney has noted how hard his fellow food truck operators worked, as well as their commitment to providing outstanding food and customer service.
“Early this year, I decided that I wanted to create an event that would showcase the best food truck operators in Middle Tennessee,” said Kearney. “I wanted to give them an opportunity to get recognition for everything they do.”
As a result, Kearney and his team partnered with the Hendersonville Parks & Recreation Department, CheerVille and several other sponsors to create the city’s first food truck festival. Over 1,000 people attended the event to sample the outdoor fare and to support their favorite food truck vendors. In addition, most of the diners brought canned food items which were donated to Feed Sumner.
At the end of the festival, Kearney gave out awards honoring the “best of show” in several categories. The victors included Andre’s Barbecue – Middle Tennessee’s Top Food Truck and Top BBQ Truck, the Tennessee Cobbler Co. – Top Comfort Food Truck, Mason’s Hotdogs – Top Sandwich Truck and Vansauwa’s Tacos and Vegan Eats – Top International Truck.

Community Blessing Boxes Help Address Food
Insecurity Across Sumner County
ARTICLE & PHOTOGRAPHY
BY RICK MURRAY
As the calendar turns to October, we enter one of the most joyous times of the year – the holiday season. For most of us, it is a happy time in which we share special celebrations and get-togethers with family and friends, often around tables filled with lovingly prepared feasts.
Unfortunately, the holidays can also be a very stressful time, particularly for those in need. Financial worries and hunger tend to worsen during the holiday season, prompting many to wonder how they will be able to feed their families.
Several local nonprofits work year-round to help families get through hard times. However, they are often unable to meet all the demand, resulting in a gap in the social services net that some families can fall through.
Community Church of Hendersonville celebrated their Blessing Box with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The Blessing Box at St. Timothy Lutheran Church is one of three in Hendersonville.
To help address this situation, a grassroots mission has arisen that is helping to address food insecurity concerns. Known as the Blessing Box initiative, the approach is a community-driven effort to place food boxes where anyone facing hunger can access them freely and anonymously. To learn more about Blessing Boxes, Hendersonville Lifestyle sat down with local advocate Trisha Russo.
WHAT ARE BLESSING BOXES?
“Blessing Boxes are standalone mini pantries that contain donated food and personal care items that are freely available to people in need. By design, the boxes are unlocked, making it easy to both donate and retrieve items. Most of the boxes are accessible on a 24 x 7 basis.”
WHAT ITEMS ARE ACCEPTABLE AS BLESSING BOX DONATIONS?
“Typical food donations consist of such items as soups, cereals, canned meats, peanut butter, crackers and pancake/biscuit mixes. Along with food, toiletry items such as soap, shampoo, toilet paper and toothpaste are also accepted.
HOW MANY BLESSING BOXES ARE THERE IN SUMNER COUNTY?
“As of October, there are 34 boxes across the county, including three in Hendersonville.”
HOW DO PEOPLE DONATE?
“Donations can be made anytimeday or night. All that donors need to do is to bring their items to the boxes, open the unlocked doors and place their donations inside.”
HOW DID YOU LEARN ABOUT BLESSING BOXES?
“I first heard about the concept from my sister in 2019,” says Russo. “She lives in White House, and she told me about a Blessing Box on Highway 31W. After she explained how it works, I knew that I wanted to become involved.”
HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE MISSION?
“After learning about the Blessing Box in White House, and discovering two more donation boxes in Gallatin, I started asking my friends about them, and I soon realized that no one was aware of them. As a result, I became motivated to spread the word through social media about this worthy local project. Blessing Box donations help our neighbors, and I like promoting community involvement. I now enjoy leading a small group of Facebook advocates supporting this mission purely through local engagement.”
FOR AN ANYONE SEEKING TO INSTALL A BLESSING BOX, WHOM SHOULD THEY CONTACT?
“Anyone can contact me – I’m happy to discuss the process. My email address is: blessingboxessumner@gmail.com”
“IN TODAY’S TOUGH ECONOMY, GROCERIES ARE SO EXPENSIVE THAT MANY FAMILIES NEED IMMEDIATE HELP. AS A RESULT, OUR BLESSING BOXES ARE VERY BUSY, OFTEN TURNING OVER ALL DONATIONS EVERY 48-72 HOURS, SOMETIMES EVEN FASTER.”
