Celebrating the Ladies in Our Lives

“I am strong. I am invincible. I am woman.”
Ray Burton and Helen Reddy

May is one of our favorite months. Spring is in full swing all across Sumner County, and the air is filled with the sweet scents of blooming flowers. Sunny days, blue skies and mild temperatures invite us to venture back outdoors to shake off our lingering winter blues.

May is also a perfect time to recognize some of the most important people in our lives – our ladies. Wives, daughters, mothers, grandmothers, sisters – we would be nowhere without them.

Although the women in our lives are celebrated each year on Mother’s Day, we at Hendersonville Lifestyle choose to honor them each and every day. As such, we are devoting our entire May issue to the strong and wise women who help us recognize and appreciate the good things in the world around us. On a personal note, both Rick and I would like to extend a special shout out to our most special ladies – our wives, Debbie Murray and Towana Bowles. Without their love and support, we would not be able to bring you the magazine each month. They encourage and inspire us, and they challenge us to become the best that we can be.

This month, we begin by introducing you to three local ladies who have dedicated their lives to making Hendersonville such a great community. The difference that they make each day resonates far beyond the confines of Sumner County.

Continuing, we visit with a local lady who has helped transform the Hendersonville Area Chamber of Commerce into one of the largest and fastest growing chambers in Tennessee.

Next, we visit with a local dermatologist to get her recommendations about how to maintain safe and healthy skin while still being able to enjoy the great outdoors.

Rounding the corner into the home stretch, we bring you a couple of recipes that are sure to whet your appetite throughout May and beyond.

As always, we close by keeping you up to date on many of the exciting community and business activities that help make the City by the Lake such a great place in which to live, work and play.

Okay, Hendersonville, that’s enough talk – it’s time to get started.

We’ll see you soon,

May 2024

Onward and Upward

One of the linchpins for a healthy business environment is the presence of a dedicated chamber of commerce. From advocacy to education to managing business and governmental relations, chambers are vital to the success of local communities.

The City of Hendersonville is blessed to have one of the largest and most effective chambers in Tennessee – the Hendersonville Area Chamber of Commerce. Led by President and CEO Kathleen Hawkins, the Hendersonville Chamber is committed to providing critical support to local businesses to help them achieve their goals.

Along with its business advocacy mission, the Hendersonville Chamber is also an important player in the community at large, as demonstrated

through such initiatives as the recent Hendersonville Rising tornado relief concert, special recognition events such as the Golden Apple, Women Impacting Business and Men Impacting Business award ceremonies and popular annual events such as the annual July Freedom Festival.

Since her arrival in 2016, Kathleen has made an indelible impact upon Hendersonville that resonates across the community. Recently, Hendersonville Lifestyle sat down with her to learn about her background, what drives her and her plans for the Chamber’s future.

WHAT DREW YOU TO THE WORLD OF CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE?

“After college, I began my career teaching marketing and business courses. Before long, I met and married my husband, Jeff, who was then a professional photographer. After working with him in his business, I discovered how much marketing and financial training was needed by photographers, as well as other small business owners.

Subsequently, I decided that I wanted to dedicate myself to helping businesses gain the skills they need to succeed. After writing and publishing nine books and spending some time on the business speaking circuit, I finally realized that I could provide the most help by working in business advocacy. Since then, I have been managing professional membership organizations for eighteen years.”

WHAT MAKES HENDERSONVILLE SO SPECIAL FOR YOU?

“When I interviewed for my position at the Chamber, I was immediately impressed with everything that Hendersonville offered for me and my family. Schools, parks, the lake – it seemed to be such a great place to call home. However, it didn’t take long before I realized that the best part of Hendersonville is its people, and the relationships and sense of connection and support that they provide to one another.”

WHO WAS YOUR MENTOR?

“I was privileged to learn from Allen Chernoff. Alan was a wealthy, retired New York businessman who took me under his tutelage. He generously offered his time and wisdom to inspire, coach and mentor me in the world of business.”

Kathleen Hawkins

PRESIDENT & CEOHENDERSONVILLE CHAMBER

Since 2016, local businesswoman Kathleen Hawkins has served as the President and CEO of the Hendersonville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Under her leadership, the Hendersonville Chamber has grown to become the 5th largest business advocacy organization in Tennessee. Every day, local companies ranging from sole proprietors to large corporations are prospering in part due to efforts of Kathleen and her Chamber team.

During the Covid era, Kathleen was instrumental in the creation of the Thrive 37075 branding campaign to promote local shopping. Since its inception, Thrive 37075 has helped many local businesses to continue to grow and prosper.  In addition, the program has also generated additional sales tax revenue which has helped to fund roads, fire stations, first responders and schools.

Along with providing support and education for local businesses, Kathleen has also been instrumental in organizing and putting on numerous community events, including annual Freedom Fest, Taste of Hendersonville and Magnolia Market.

Kathleen and her husband Jeff have three children, and they reside locally.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN GROWING THE CHAMBER?

“Like most membership organizations, growing a chamber requires constant diligence and overcoming obstacles. At the end of the day, it is important that Chamber members and prospective members see value in their investment. From keeping existing members actively engaged to enticing new businesses to join, the Chamber must always be working hard to show its constituents a demonstrable return on their investments. The Chamber must always provide valuable services to its members that justify their annual membership fees.

At the Hendersonville Chamber, we accomplish these goals by adapting to the changing business environment by providing relevant resources, services and networking opportunities. We also strive to ensure that our infrastructure, systems and processes can continue to scale as our membership base increases. We address this challenge through a combination of strategic planning, member outreach, prudent financial management and a keen focus on our value proposition.”

WHAT

ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF ABOUT THE CHAMBER?

“I am most proud of the many ways in which we are able to serve our business community. For example, on Dec. 9, we experienced a devastating tornado that resulting in the damage or destruction of 132 of our local businesses. While the event was tragic, we were able to respond to help our neighbors in need. I am truly honored that we were able to raise $225,000 to provide grants for financial assistance to those companies who needed our help.”

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP PRIORITIES FOR THE CHAMBER OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS?

“In order to keep the Chamber growing and thriving, I have three key goals. First, I want to see us continue to create a personalized experience for members in which they experience ongoing value through professional development, education, marketing and networking. Second, I want to develop a comprehensive compensation package for chamber employees that will allow us to attract, retain and reward top talent. Finally, I want to establish a Hendersonville Chamber event center. This center will provide a diverse hub with a flexible layout that will provide dedicated space for chamber offices, training rooms and provide a central location to host Chamber and community events.”

Safely ENJOY THE SUNSHINE -

LOCAL DERMATOLOGIST OFFERS SKIN CARE TIPS FOR YEAR ROUND HEALTH

One of the best things about Spring is the return of warmer weather and bright sunny days. The pleasant conditions beckon most people to leave the confines of their homes to enjoy the great outdoors.

Unfortunately, too many people fail to take adequate steps to protect their skin from hazardous ultraviolet rays that stream from the sun. Some even exacerbate the situation by spending time in tanning beds.

The result of all of this unsafe solar exposure can have serious side effects upon the body’s largest organ – its skin. From premature aging to skin cancer, too much sun is not a good thing.

To help our readers learn how to avoid sun damage, Hendersonville Lifestyle visited with one of the area’s leading board-certified dermatologists and Mohs surgeons, Dr. Margaret Mann, CEO and co-founder of Innova Dermatology. Innova offers a full range of dermatologic services in its Hendersonville office.

"At least one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70, so it’s never too early for your first skin check. Patients should get their first skin check in their teens to watch for worrisome moles."
Dr. Margaret Mann
LOCAL’S CHOICE | STYLE + BEAUTY

How often should patients schedule dermatology visits?

“We recommend patients see their dermatologists once a year. Every day, we diagnose melanomas, basal cell and squamous cell cancers – often in patients who didn’t even know that they had a concerning spot. Skin cancers, even melanomas, are completely treatable and curable when found early, so that’s why we recommend routine annual skin exams for everyone.”

At what age should patients begin annual dermatology check-ups?

“At least one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70, so it’s never too early for your first skin check. Patients should get their first skin check in their teens to watch for worrisome moles. Patients in their late 20s should start getting annual checks, especially those with a history of tanning bed use or significant sun exposure.  Finally, anyone with a worrisome spot (e.g. a changing mole, a spot that bleeds), should see a dermatologist immediately.”

What types/ages of patients are most at risk for skin cancer?

While genetics is important, the most critical factor in developing skin cancer is sun exposure. Statistics show that people who have had more than five sunburns have twice the risk for melanoma. Tanning bed use is associated with an 83% increased risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma and a 29% increased risk of developing basal cell carcinoma.  Patients who tan indoors are six times more likely to be diagnosed with melanoma in their 20s.”

What are some of the common symptoms of skin cancer?

“Patients should monitor moles using the ‘ABCDE’ scale (Asymmetry, irregular Borders, multiple Colors, Diameter > 5mm and Evolving or changing). Any of these signs could indicate melanoma. Itching, bleeding and non-healing bumps or pimples could indicate basal or squamous cell carcinomas.”

Dr. Mann is a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon.

What are your top recommendations for keeping skin safe and healthy?

“1. Protect your skin from the sun. Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen when outside and be sure to wear a wide brim had and sun-protective clothing.

2. Be gentle with your skin. Limit long hot showers and use mild soaps such as CeraVe and Cetaphil. Avoid scrubbing your skin, even if you have acne. Instead, use gentle products like CLN wash to cleanse and remove acne-causing bacteria.

3. Moisturize frequently, particularly if you have dry sensitive skin. We recommend moisturizers such as Skinceuticals Triple Lipid and Dermamade Barrier creams for most patients, and products like Eucerin Roughness Relief and Innova Xerosis Gel for those with extra dry, flaky skin.

4. Remember that a healthy life = healthy skin. We recommend that our patients exercise regularly, manage stress, eat balanced diets and avoid smoking.

5. If you have any skin issues, get the facts by seeing a board-certified dermatologist.”

What sun protection products do you suggest?

“We recommend using broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30-45. Some of the most effective products are EltaMD, Pavise and ISDIN Eryfotana Actinica.”

“Skin cancers, even melanomas, are completely treatable and curable when found early, so that’s why we recommend routine annual skin exams for everyone.”

HANDMADE BREAKING BREAD

This recipe is quick and easy to make with just a few simple steps. It tastes great on its own, but dipping it in olive oil infused with fresh herbs adds an extra level of flavor.

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 ¾ cups warm water

• 2 ½ teaspoons sugar

• 1 package active dry yeast

• 4 cups flour

• 2 teaspoons salt

• 4 tablespoons olive oil

Optional:

• Fresh rosemary

• Coarse sea salt

• Fresh pressed garlic

INSTRUCTIONS:

Use a stand mixer with a fitted dough hook, and stir together the water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and stir again. Set mixture aside for 5 minutes. Mixture should be foamy. Next, add the flour and salt and mix on low until a shaggy dough forms. Increase speed and mix for an additional 4-5 minutes. Brush a large bowl with olive oil. Transfer the dough to the bowl and cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a damp towel. Set aside for about 1 to 1 ½ hours until the dough has doubled in size.

Brush a 9x13-inch baking dish with 2 tablespoons of oil. Uncover the dough and rub hands with olive oil. Slide your hands under the dough and fold it onto itself. Continue to work your way around the edge of the bowl, folding the dough onto itself until there is a ball that you can lift from the bowl. Place the dough in the prepared pan and press the dough to the edges. Cover the pan with plastic wrap or a damp towel and set aside to rise for about 45 minutes until the dough has doubled in size.

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Drizzle the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil over the dough. Rub your hands with olive oil and use your fingers to make indentions on the surface of the dough. Sprinkle it with salt and rosemary and any desired toppings. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown.
