LIFESTYLE LETTER
Home is Our Happy Place
They say that home is where the heart is. I say home is where you make it. Las Vegas has a reputation for being a “transient town,” where people come in for a brief stint in time and leave. But for those of us who have been here for a while, we feel lucky to have been let in on this little secret slice of the universe that we all choose to call home. Whenever I travel, I always feel relieved to touch down at our airport, which is how you know you’re in the right spot. I moved here in 2004 to go to college and fell in love. Twenty plus years later, I’m still in awe that I happened to stumble upon this place by sheer luck and have had the honor of calling it home for so many years. This is the city where I became a legal adult, graduated college, met my now husband, bought my first house, built a professional career, bought a business, and have made more meaningful friendships that I can begin to count. I may have been raised elsewhere, but this is truly where I grew up.
Watching the city expand so extensively has been such a roller coaster of emotions in the love/hate relationship we have with being proud of our city growing, while still wanting to hold on to the small-town charm we fell in love with. I tell all the newcomers that this place will give you what you put into it, and the community is there if you’re willing to put yourself out there and find yours!
Henderson has so much to offer for all ages and we find so much joy in bringing new experiences, events, and highlighting our hometown neighbors for you every month. In this issue, we hear about some of our home-grown students making it big signing for college sports, we visit with Cactus Valley Retirement Resort who are making a home for our senior residents here in Henderson, we get some home inspiration from our friends at Mercato Interiors, and share insights and benefits of cooking at home.
As always, we hope you love it and thank you for reading!

CACTUS VALLEY RETIREMENT RESORT EMBRACE NEW BEGINNINGS, LASTING FRIENDSHIPS, AND JOYFUL LIVING
ARTICLE BY ALISIA PULELLA

Retirement living often means simplifying life. At Cactus Valley Retirement Resort, live-in managers Joyce and Robert McBride offer more than convenience—they provide a sense of community and belonging.
People Make the Difference
While amenities abound, the McBrides emphasize the importance of human connection. “Our biggest asset is the team,” shares Robert. “Residents love the people who cook their meals, answer their calls, and care for them daily.” This personalized attention creates a supportive, family-like atmosphere.
Aging Gracefully in Place
Cactus Valley’s “age in place” philosophy ensures residents won’t need to move again. “Once you join our community, we work with you and your family to accommodate changes in health, so you can stay in a familiar, supportive environment,” Joyce explains. This approach minimizes disruptions and fosters strong connections.
The Right Time to Move
The ideal time to transition to community living? “Yesterday,” says Joyce. “When maintaining your home becomes a burden, it’s time to consider a change. At Cactus Valley, you can focus on enjoying your golden years without the stress of repairs, yard work, or taxes.”
A Personalized Home
Moving to Cactus Valley Retirement Resort doesn’t mean giving up the comforts of home. The community’s relocation experts recreate favorite spaces, from hanging familiar curtains to arranging treasured items. Cactus Valley is also pet friendly— welcoming furry friends with no deposits or fees.
Affordability with Benefits
While there is a cost, the McBrides encourage comparing expenses. “When you add up taxes, repairs, utilities, dining, and entertainment, we’re often comparable to homeownership,” Robert explains. With amenities like Signature Freedom Dining, housekeeping, and scheduled transportation, Cactus Valley delivers exceptional value.
A New Beginning
Leaving a long-time home can be emotional, but Joyce offers reassurance: “You’ll make new friends, create fresh memories, and wonder why you didn’t move sooner.” Cactus Valley offers more than a place to live—it’s a supportive community where residents rediscover joy and purpose.
At Cactus Valley Retirement Resort, home is more than a building. It’s where life flourishes, friendships grow, and burdens fade away.
LOCAL SCHOOL, BIG DREAMS: HOW GV CHRISTIAN'S ATHLETIC PROGRAM PROPELS STUDENTS TO COLLEGIATE SUCCESS
From Champions to College Stars
Right here in Henderson, GV Christian School is making an impact in the world of high school athletics. With a commitment to developing wellrounded student-athletes, this private K-12 institution is seeing an impressive number of its graduates move on to compete at the collegiate level.
Mr. Eric Rolwing, GV Christian School's Athletics Administrator, beams as he recounts recent success stories. "We've been incredibly blessed to have quite a few student-athletes pursue college athletics in all levels: NCAA (D1, D2, & D3), NAIA, and NCCAA," Mr. Rolwing shares.
The school's volleyball program has been particularly successful, culminating in a 2A state championship victory in Reno last November. The team's captain, Ellie Thurman, named 2A State Player of the Year, is set to play Division 1 volleyball at The University of Nevada-Reno this fall.
"We could not be more excited to cheer her on in the coming years," Mr. Rolwing enthuses.
Other standout senior athletes include Judah Withey, a 2A state champion in track & field, and Thomas Pulcini, who earned 2A All-State honors
in football. Both are expected to compete at the collegiate level, though they remain uncommitted at this time.
The list of recent GV Christian alumni finding success in college sports is impressive. It includes Terrance Turner (Northwestern Ohio, Basketball), Deomani Loveland (Southern Oregon, Football), and several athletes at the University of NevadaReno, including Brennan Killoran, Olivia Pecoraro, and Mason Sosa in cheer.
GV Christian School's approach to developing college-ready athletes is holistic. "Our athletic department is designed to be a part of the whole student experience at GV Christian: body, mind, and soul," Mr. Rolwing explains. "We strive to make sure our student athletes have a well-balanced life with family, friends, academics, extracurricular activities, and God."
This comprehensive approach seems to be paying dividends. The school's motto, "The Pursuit of God, Knowledge, Compassion and Leadership," underscores its commitment to developing not just great athletes, but well-rounded individuals.

“We strive to make sure our student athletes have a well-balanced life.”
ARTICLE BY ALEXANDER FRASER |
Mr. Rolwing believes that the school's structure and overall experience prepare students well for the demands of collegiate athletics. "Obviously, a college-level student-athlete has to be operating at a high level and have clear organization of not only his or her athletic pursuits, but all elements of life as well," he notes.
For aspiring student-athletes considering GV Christian School, Mr. Rolwing offers this advice: "Understand that athletics is just one part of the experience at GV Christian School. We really look for our student athletes to excel across the board academically, spiritually, emotionally, and socially."
He adds, "We find that our most successful student athletes on the court or on the field are ones that excel in many areas of the student experience at GV Christian."
What sets GV Christian's athletic program apart, according to Mr. Rolwing, is the strong sense of community support. "Our GV Christian Community is incredibly supportive of our student athletes," he says. "This allows us to have well-attended home games from not only our student body, their families and our staff, but also our church members are often found in the crowd at a big football game, or state championship volleyball game."
This community backing creates an environment where young athletes can thrive, pushing themselves to new heights with the knowledge that they have a strong support system behind them.
GV Christian athletics director, Danny Robertson, emphasizes the lasting impact of the school's athletic program. "I have been working with student athletes from GV Christian for almost a decade and one of the most gratifying parts of this job is seeing our alumni after they graduate. We always have a great turnout at our homecoming football games, but even just having the former student athletes show up during their Christmas break or our summer workouts, because they want to give back. And it seems to be a process that is feeding on itself. The class of 2024 comes back to be a part because the class of 2019 did the same for them and, God willing the class of 2030 will be doing the same thing because the class of 2026 keeps the tradition going now."
As GV Christian School continues to produce college-level talent, it's clear that their approach - focusing on the whole person rather than just athletic ability - is paying off. By nurturing not just athletes, but wellrounded individuals, GV Christian is setting its students up for success both on and off the field.
With a track record of success and a commitment to holistic development, GV Christian School is proving that even small schools can dream big when it comes to athletic achievement. As more of its graduates move on to compete at the collegiate level, the school is cementing its reputation as a nurturing ground for future sports stars.

Lively Spring Palette
Liz has seen a surge in bold colors this year, perfect for refreshing your space this spring. "Jewel tones and deep greens will continue to rise, alongside warm earth tones that provide a grounding effect," she notes. To incorporate these hues, consider adding bright throw pillows, artwork, or even a statement wall in your living space.
Blending Materials for Depth
Mixed metals and materials are set to play a significant role in modern interiors. "I see a blend of wood with metal or marble," Liz states. For a spring update, try incorporating metallic accents through light fixtures or decorative objects, pairing them with natural wood elements to create a balanced, fresh look.
Artisanal Touches
Handmade ceramics are making a strong comeback, offering a perfect opportunity to add unique, spring-inspired pieces to your decor. Display artisanal vases filled with seasonal blooms or use handcrafted pottery as eye-catching centerpieces.
Cozy Shapes for Spring Comfort
As the weather warms, Liz foresees a trend towards cozy shapes in furniture. Embrace this by selecting curved sofas or rounded armchairs that invite relaxation while maintaining a modern aesthetic.
Liz emphasizes the importance of thoughtful design in creating multifunctional spaces that prioritize health and wellness. "This is design at its very core. It's my job to take all these components into consideration to create a space for a client that is thoughtful, yet functional, and hyper-specific to them," she explains.
As we step into spring, homeowners can enjoy interior design that emphasizes bold aesthetics and personalized touches. Now is the perfect time to refresh your home with these emerging trends, creating spaces that are both stylish and reflective of your unique personality while embracing the spirit of spring renewal.
HOME COOKING NOURISHES SOULS
ARTICLE BY SIENNA SINCLAIR
REDISCOVERING THE JOY AND HEALTH BENEFITS OF PREPARING MEALS IN YOUR OWN KITCHEN
In an era of fast food and instant gratification, the simple act of cooking a meal at home has become a powerful antidote to the stresses of modern life. More than just a means to satisfy hunger, home cooking is emerging as a therapeutic ritual that can boost mental health, improve physical well-being, and strengthen family bonds. As we dive into the world of home-cooked meals, we'll explore how this age-old practice is making a comeback, offering a recipe for a healthier, happier lifestyle.
The ritual of cooking at home is a multisensory experience that engages both mind and body. As you chop vegetables, stir sauces, and season dishes, the repetitive motions can have a meditative effect, helping to shift focus away from daily worries. The kitchen becomes a sanctuary where the troubles of the outside world fade into the background, replaced by the soothing rhythms of culinary creation. This mindful engagement in cooking can significantly reduce stress levels, with 78 percent of Americans reporting that they find the act of cooking to be calming.
Beyond its stress-relieving properties, home cooking offers a host of health benefits. By preparing meals at home, you gain control over ingredients, allowing you to make healthier choices that can boost energy levels and contribute to overall well-being. The simple act of incorporating more vegetables into your diet can have profound effects on your health. Leafy greens like spinach and kale are packed with vitamins and minerals, while colorful bell peppers and carrots provide essential antioxidants. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and Brussels sprouts offer cancer-fighting compounds, making them excellent additions to any home-cooked meal.
As you sauté garlic and onions or roast a tray of mixed vegetables, your home fills with enticing aromas that can lift your mood
and create a welcoming atmosphere. These scents not only make your space more inviting, but also trigger the release of feel-good hormones, enhancing the overall cooking experience.
When it comes to protein sources, salmon stands out as a nutritional powerhouse. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, this fish supports heart and brain health while adding a delicious centerpiece to your meal. For a comforting option, chicken dishes offer versatility and familiarity. Whether you're roasting a whole bird or preparing a quick stir-fry, chicken provides lean protein that can be paired with a variety of healthy sides.
The beauty of home cooking lies in its flexibility. It can be a solitary, meditative act or a joyful family affair. For those seeking inspiration, the internet has become a treasure trove of healthy recipes. Websites and apps offer countless ideas for nutritious meals, catering to various dietary preferences and skill levels. Searching for recipes can itself become a relaxing activity, allowing you to plan meals and explore new culinary horizons from the comfort of your home.
Cooking with family members adds another layer of benefit to the home cooking experience. It provides an opportunity for quality time, teaching valuable life skills to children, and creating lasting memories. As you work together to prepare a meal, you're not just nourishing your bodies, but also strengthening familial bonds.
The health benefits of home cooking extend beyond the immediate satisfaction of a good meal. Studies have shown that people who regularly cook at home tend to have lower body mass indexes (BMIs) and a reduced risk of chronic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes. This is likely due to the increased consumption of whole foods and better portion control that comes with preparing meals yourself.
In addition, the sense of accomplishment that comes from creating a delicious, healthy meal can enhance self-esteem and contribute to overall emotional well-being. Cooking allows individuals to take control of their diet, moving away from processed and corporate-prepared foods and embracing a more personal approach to nutrition. This empowerment extends beyond nutrition, encouraging self-reliance and sparking creativity in the kitchen.
For those new to cooking or looking to expand their culinary repertoire, starting small is key. Begin with simple recipes that incorporate a variety of vegetables and lean proteins. Experiment with herbs and spices to add flavor without excess salt or fat. As your confidence grows, you can tackle more complex dishes and techniques.
Ultimately, the resurgence of home cooking represents more than just a culinary trend; it's a return to a fundamental human practice that nourishes both body and soul. Whether you're whipping up a quick stir-fry or spending a leisurely Sunday preparing a family roast, each meal cooked at home is an investment in your health and happiness. So, don your apron, sharpen your knives, and rediscover the joy of cooking – your mind, body, and taste buds will thank you.
