September Style

The Style issue is a time to get the creative juices flowing.  It manifests itself in many different ways and is an opportunity to harness what is inside of us into the way we look and feel along with the surroundings we enjoy.

I have a cousin in Southern Italy who bought a villa in disrepair.  The location was beautiful and the home had the potential you read about in a book or see in a movie like “Under the Tuscan Sun”.  He, like my Uncle, was in the shoe business and turned the lower level of the villa into the top shoe store in the region and the upper level into a classic mediterranean home complete with lemon tree overhanging the balcony for the much used citrus touch needed with every meal.  It was a collaboration of love and design bringing art of the region into everyday life.  The caveat, make sure you’re dressed well when grabbing a lemon per la pranza!  We spent many a night on the balcony overlooking the mountain terrain enjoying amazing pastas and seafood all freshly purchased each day just around the corner in the town market.  Every day, dressed well and aware of appearances.

Showcasing style in both clothing and design, we are ready to impress.

We look into the trending styles upcoming this fall with Savvy Chic Boutique owner, Lanna Young.  Lanna is ahead of the curve and brings the urban trends into Grosse Pointe for every season.  An amazing business woman, Lanna shows us the looks of the season in a dynamic display you’ll be sure to enjoy.

We visit Jaime Rae Turnbull to see some amazing design elements in the Windmill Pointe Subdivision.  An amazing home with unique design features.

We touch on glamour elements that will guide our readers on the way to touch things up to look your best.  We also highlight a couple staple events with the annual Fall Market from Tau Beta and the Grosse Pointe Farms Foundation event. It’s September and its style.  Enjoy!

IN THE PARK

A lovely, updated home in a desired location is the foundation of prime real estate, and the historic Tudor home for sale on Trombley Road in Grosse Pointe Park checks these boxes and many more. Built in 1929, it has all the charm of the original construction combined with every modern feature a homeowner today could desire.

"The current owner and the previous owners went to great lengths to maintain its original design while updating it," says Jaime Rae Turnbull of Higbie Maxon Agney. "The timbers on the exterior have been completely restored, and all of the original floors, leaded glass doors, stained glass, and plaster details have been meticulously maintained, keeping with the original architecture."

The magnificent and grand entryway leads to this over 5000 square foot, four bedroom, six bathroom home in the Windmill Pointe subdivision that sits on a rare double corner lot and boasts many unique features. "There are custom timber beams in the family room, and they are unique built-in cabinetry," she says. "There's also a cathedral ceiling with another beam in the primary suite, which I have never seen in a Grosse Pointe home."

Completely renovated by the current owner, the primary bath is exceptionally luxurious and has a fantastic freestanding stone tub. A wood-paneled office is an excellent fit for even the highest-level executive.

"There is geothermal heating, so every floor is heated, and the natural light that comes into the house is quite remarkable," says Jaime.

There are also multiple fireplaces throughout the home to keep everyone cozy and warm.

She adds, "There's also a charming screened-in porch that's perfect if the weather starts to turn and you want to watch a storm come in."

The main house overlooks the beautiful property with its thoughtful terraced landscaping, which incorporates the entire side lot into a cohesive resort-like feel within this very historic setting. Massive stones, which give the yard an additional level of fascination, had to be craned onto the property. This landscaping, which also provides a lot of privacy, actually won the Grosse Pointe Park Beautification Commission award, explains Jaime. Homeowners and guests will feel like they are in their very own private park.

The property has six-foot custom-iron fencing, which encircles an infinity pool surrounded by bluestone. It also has a fire pit, golf simulator, tea house, built-in barbecue, patio, and other gathering areas great for entertaining. The lovely pool house, built to match the home's architecture, has an entertainment space with a kitchenette and bar and a loft studio with a steam shower and half bath. The two-car garage has solar panels affixed to the roof for cost savings and ecological advantages.

Grosse Pointe Park incorporates private and municipal parks, waterfront access, and beautiful gardens. Homeowners have access to a fitness center, a private

movie theater, a skating rink, a putting green, a kayak launch, tennis, pickleball, volleyball, playscapes, splash pads, and more.

"We also have a thriving business district, and we encourage people to patronize the businesses and see all the incredible things that the Park has to offer," says Jaime. "We're really proud of what has taken place. In the last decade, it has really come alive and has been a big draw, as has our proximity to Detroit. Many great things are happening in that city, too."

She says you don't have to go outside of Grosse Pointe and the area to truly experience great entertainment because everything's right there and accessible.

"I think that's really important for people to know."

Jaime, who followed her mother, Kay Agney, into real estate, loves finding and filling a need. "Whether it be a first-time home buyer, a change in life, or downsizing, working with homeowners as their lives evolve is heartwarming," she says. "I'm lucky to have an opportunity to interact with people making significant decisions about their family, where they're going to live, and what kind of house they'll buy."

Grosse Pointe Park

Grosse Pointe Park is not only a great place to live but also a real destination for fun and entertainment. It borders beautiful Lake St. Clair and the bustling and renowned city of Detroit, where dining, shopping, cultural events, and other interesting pursuits abound.

Within its 3.71 square miles, homeowners can enjoy a large private lakefront park with a pool, gym, movie theaters, gathering spaces, and more. At the foot of Three Mile Drive, another large park, Patterson Park, is popular with residents and visitors for its skating rink and walking trails.

Homes range from single and multi-family properties averaging over 3,000 square feet to multimillion-dollar mansions boasting scenic lakeshore views designed by notable architects. While offering many quiet and secluded lots, many shops, schools, and churches are conveniently located within walking distance of most residences. The Park even boasts its library branch - the Carolyn and Ted Ewald Memorial Library – operated by the Grosse Pointe Public Library.

Grosse Pointe Park also includes a large neighborhood on Windmill Pointe, the edge of which marks the entrance to the Detroit River and the end of Lake St. Clair. It’s a very desirable place to spend time with family and friends.

The Grosse Pointe Farms Foundation is raising friends to support the renovation of their swim and pool area. The current pool was built 60 years ago.

This is a conceptual design and a public informational meeting will be held this fall to garner further community input.  Concurrently, the Pool Committee is working on plans for a redesign of the current bathhouse. The goal is to start construction toward the end of next year’s summer swim season with completion towards the beginning of the 2026 swim season.

Highlights of the design include:

• Separate 25-meter pool for competitive swim

• Separate leisure pool with 3 additional lanes for lap swim

• Introduction of a lazy river

• Larger and relocated tot-pool in line with leisure pool that includes “splash” features (current location of splash pad)

• Addition of an interactive fountain at the entrance to the bathhouse

FINDING A TOUCH OF GLAM IN EVERYDAY DESIGN

ARTICLE BY ALLISON GIBESON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
HGTV star shares her secrets to make a home look both beautiful and livable.

Tamara Day, star of HGTV’s Bargain Mansions, describes her style as “laid-back luxe.”

“I am a mom of four, and I like pretty, shiny things,” Tamara says. “The two don’t always mix well. I design with lifestyle and family in mind but with that touch of glam.”

This mixture of practicality and flare can be accomplished throughout the home on a budget, Tamara says.

When it comes to the kitchen, she says replacing the backsplash is one of the most cost-effective ways to refresh the room. Additionally, she says paint is the most inexpensive option to update cabinets, and there is a de-glosser on the market that will reduce the labor involved by helping paint adhere to cabinets.

“You can get a whole new kitchen with some fresh paint,” Tamara says.

In the bathroom, Tamara suggests putting up new light fixtures and wallpaper for a fresh look. She suggests using wallpaper on just one wall to create contrast.

“Wallpaper transforms everything and puts in a hominess factor,” Tamara says.

To give a new feel to the living room, Tamara suggests using decorative pillows as well as displaying design books and layering with a candle or other interesting object to create a sentimental focal point. She also suggests investing in good, quality sofas

and rugs because less expensive options will not typically withstand the amount of wear and tear they receive from a family.

Overall, Tamara says there is a balance between mixing expensive and inexpensive items and materials around the home, all without having it looking cluttered. She says every space needs something that is thrifted.

Tamara finds many people enjoy elements of different types of styles and have a hard time defining their personal style. To help narrow down to a preferred look, she suggests taking a hundred room images and sorting them into piles of likes and dislikes. She says when someone completes this exercise, they typically find a theme to their preferences.

MAKING COLOR, TEXTURE AND PATTERN STAND OUT

Tamara has a natural eye for using great colors and textures in design. What is her approach to making a room look great?

HERE ARE TAMARA’S TOP TIPS:

Find a base color with pops of other colors.

“Every room needs a touch of black and a pop of color,” Tamara says. “The black will anchor it, but the color will give it life.”

If the home is urban, she suggests more bold pops. If it is a traditional home, use a mixture of colors. Additionally, she suggests using one basic color throughout a home with pops of other colors as opposed to having a different color in each room.

Consider wallpaper.

“Wallpaper can be scary for a lot of people, but there are so may wallpapers out there that are removable,” Tamara says.

Tamara says wallpaper adds texture and warmth, and she includes it in most of the homes she designs.

Layer with baskets, blankets and greenery. All three make a room feel cozy and add color and interest to a space.

SUMMER END of CRAB BOIL

I love family-style meals such as a crab boil this time of year. The food is the star of the show and a vital part of the tablescape – decor optional! Additional elements included here are a large paper-sail, light blue taper candles, a few large flowers, and heavy white rope as nautical accents. You can also use other elements such as large seashells, coral or seaglass. Use whatever you have on hand that nods to the sea.

Parchment Paper

Paper-Sail Centerpiece (instructions found in Martha Stewart’s book “Handmade Holiday Crafts” page 248) set in a galvanized bucket filled with white sand.

Blue Taper Candles placed in 8oz jelly jars filled with white sand.

Glass Bottles labeled “Let’s Sail Away.” Inside, roll up a handwritten note, joke or riddle for guests to enjoy a chuckle or conversation starter.

Large Galvanized Tray overlaid with parchment paper to hold the crab boil feast.

Fill a large stock pot halfway with cold water. Season with lemon peels, bay leaves, black pepper, red pepper flakes, Old Bay Seasoning, and garlic powder. Bring to a boil and add crab legs, sausage, potatoes, and corn until cooked. Strain water and serve on a large galvanized tray, newspaper or parchment paper – enjoy your meal with guests, family style!

Give each guest a bowl of garlic butter for dipping as well as lemons for squeezing (wrapped in cheesecloth and tied with twine to avoid seeds).

Include special beverages and desserts such as a tiered lemon cake or frozen treat to beat the heat.

CRAB BOIL MENU

THE little BLACK DRESS

STYLIST:

Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is the dress in our closet that can be accessorized to fit the event and often is the dress we go back to time and again. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?

Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Chanel transported fashion from tight corsets and bustles to straight-lined silhouettes. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves. Today, people accessorize the black dress to fit any occasion.

We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be.

“We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says.

Although black is a timeless, classic look, that doesn’t mean it goes without personality. You can make it your own style by accessorizing to infuse new life into a dress that you already own.

“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.

If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life. “Take that evening gown you wore years ago to a tailor for a little transformation. Turn it into a high low dress-top that can be worn out with girlfriends or on a date night. Pair the top with leather leggings, ankle boots, a chunky belt and some statement jewelry, and now you have a piece that pushes the boundaries of the little black dress.”

Are you looking for the best cut or style of dress that works best for your body type? Amani provided this simple guide:

HOURGLASS FIGURE:

• V-necklines

• Cinched-in waistlines

• Tailored/fitted dresses

PEAR OR TRIANGLE FIGURE:

• Tailored dresses

• Off the shoulder

ATHLETIC FIGURE:

• Embellished

• Ruffles

• Empire waist

• Volume is your friend

APPLE FIGURE:

• Drop waist

• A-line

The dress that all body types can’t go wrong with is a wrap dress of any length.

Sleep Inside, Outside

Incredible places to (literally) sleep under the stars

It’s always magical to spend a night sleeping under the stars. In decades past, adventure seekers have packed the SUV or camper with tents and gear for ‘roughin’ it’ in the great outdoors. But the swanky and exploding category of luxury outdoor hotel is something to investigate for an unforgettable, next-level experience.

For those who prefer glamping rather than pitching their own tent fireside, here are a few options that incorporate sweeping views and a unique

opportunity for travelers to be more authentically embedded in the landscape of the place they’re visiting. These resorts have bucket list-worthy rooms that capture the best of both the luxury resort experience and the outdoors.

Whether you crave the dry heat of the remote Utah desert or the luminous beauty of the Northern Lights, we’ve curated a short list of some places you *must* check out.

Amangiri, Utah

In southern Utah, Amangiri is a five star resort perfect for an adventurous weekend in the desert. However, it is the simple rooms built to emphasize the beauty of Canyon Point that truly make it an incredible place to stay. Each suite has an outdoor lounge and fireplace with private pools or rooftop terraces available too. Don’t miss a dip in the ‘gram-worthy pool, which wraps around the landscape’s curved dunes and arid plateaus.

Arctic Resort, Finland

These arctic igloos make Urho Kekkonen National Park look like a dreamy winter wonderland. Snuggle up inside the glass-roofed globe and watch the dancing northern lights overhead. Get immersed in the world of northern lights, midnight sun and other miracles of this world-renowned arctic resort. Just bundle up before stepping outside – temperatures can drop to -22 degrees!

Hacienda Na Xamena, Ibiza

The Spanish island Ibiza boasts lush pine forests, hidden calas (cove beaches) and Hacienda Na Xamena, a resort suspended on a cliff 600 feet above the Mediterranean. Guests flock to its spa for the eight saltwater thalassotherapy (seawater as a form of therapy) lagoons, which are linked together with waterfalls. Swim to the edge of the pool and drink in the sweeping sea vistas.

Pacuare Lodge, Costa Rica

This jungle hideaway is so out there, you have to whitewater raft down a river or ride a gondola to get there. A network of hanging bridges connect the villas, which have thatched roofs, plantation teak wood floors, rattan furniture and private plunge pools. In the evening, zip 400 feet down a cable for a meal at the Nest, a platform at the top of a ceiba tree, then take a night-time stroll along romantic pathways lit by candles and lanterns.
