Annual Food And Drink Edition

It's official! Fall is here and with fall comes food. From appetizers on game day to heartwarming comfort food, from dining out more because our schedules just tripled to the massive holiday feasts and the endless leftovers that come with it, one thing is sure: We love to eat in the fall. We made it through summer and it's time to bulk up for the winter; those beach bodies are officially on hold until next spring.

Now, I'm not saying to go absolutely crazy with your diet, but we all know that jeans and sweatshirts give us a little more leeway than bathing suits, shorts and tank tops. We at Greenwood City Lifestyle have taken on a bit of a split personality for this edition. You'll find in this month's pages we tried to stay balanced in our approach to dining. We connected with a couple of our fitness experts to keep you on track with some healthy options and a little motivation, but we also dove headfirst into deliciousness.

Our experts have provided dietary tips and choices that will help you in all phases of your workout and emphasize the importance of diet in pre- and post-workout times. It's important to feel your best prior to exercise and critical to eat for recovery. I've been on my own personal health journey and have experienced firsthand the importance of understanding the science behind it. I've always heard that "abs are made in the kitchen," and our partners are backing up that statement.

But it is fall, after all. Our team wanted to have some fun so you'll also find some great options to splurge. From fine dining to food trucks, because nobody wants to start their car at lunch and drive in the snow to get fast food when there's a great option parked right outside the door. Check out some of these choices and maybe reach out to book one for your business. Finally, our editor had some fun by including an article on drinks for the season! This may be her response to being forced to deal with me on the daily, but they're a nice twist on the mundane and worth giving it a try.

Regardless of your goals for the season, we tried to put a little something in here for everyone and hope you enjoy this "Food & Drink" edition of Greenwood City Lifestyle

DIETS THAT SUPPORT YOGA

Chia Chu is the owner and instructor at Studio YOU Yoga in Greenwood, 862 S. State Road 135, Ste. I. The studio provides various yoga techniques and styles, including combinations of hot power Vinyasa, heated yoga sculpt, heated yoga HIIT, Vinyasa flow, slow flow, yin, restorative and Pilates mat.

Chia says benefits from yoga include improved strength, flexibility, breathing, mental wellness while also calming a body's nervous system through anxiety and stress management.  Greenwood City Lifestyle asked her what foods and beverages can enhance those benefits derived from yoga.

ARE THERE REALLY YOGA-FRIENDLY MEALS? SOME PEOPLE USE THE TERM 'YOGIC DIETS.'  HOW DO THOSE DIETS DIFFER FROM OTHERS?

“Yes, but not in the sense of one strict, 'onesize-fits-all' menu. A yoga-friendly way of eating simply means choosing foods that help you feel light, energized and clear-minded before, during and after your practice.

Traditionally, a 'sattvic diet' is plant-based, fresh and easy to digest. While I appreciate those principles, I personally eat meat and seafood because that’s what keeps my body healthy and strong. I believe the most 'yogic' way to eat is to listen to your own body’s needs, whether that includes plant-based meals, seafood, meat or a mix of all three."

WHAT SPECIFIC FOODS SHOULD BE CONSUMED TO DOVETAIL WITH YOGA PRACTICES?

"Fresh, nutrient-rich foods give your body the steady energy it needs. Fruits and vegetables help with hydration and vitamins. Whole grains, like quinoa or brown rice, yield sustained energy. Proteins, coming from plantbased (lentils, tofu, chickpeas) and/or animal-based (eggs, fish, lean meats) support

muscle recovery and overall health. Healthy fats from avocado, nuts, seeds, olive oil or fatty fish aid in joint health and satiety. Warming spices, like ginger and turmeric, help with digestion and inflammation support."

WHAT BEVERAGES SHOULD BE CONSUMED TO DOVETAIL WITH YOGA PRACTICES?

“Hydration is key, especially for heated classes. Water, plain or infused with lemon or cucumber, is great for throughout the day. Herbal teas, such as peppermint or chamomile, help with calmness. Coconut water is perfect for natural electrolytes after sweaty classes. Light ginger or chai tea without too much sugar helps before practicing yoga.

For hot yoga, adding an electrolyte powder to your water can help replace sodium, potassium and magnesium; just choose one with minimal sugar and clean ingredients.”

WITH YOGA IN THE FOREFRONT, WHAT FOOD AND BEVERAGES SHOULD BE MINIMIZED OR AVOIDED?

“Heavy, fried or overly processed foods can slow you down or make certain poses uncomfortable. Too much caffeine can cause jitters, CONTINUED >

and alcohol dehydrates the body — both can make focus and balance harder, especially in heated classes.”

DOES IT MATTER WHEN FOODS OR DRINKS ARE CONSUMED BEFORE YOGA SESSIONS?

“Yes, larger meals should be eaten 2 to 3 hours before class. Small snacks can be

"THROUGH YOGA, I TEACH PEOPLE TO FEEL
I
BODY AND HEALTHY MIND ALL CONNECT TOGETHER. YOU CAN FIND ALL THAT THROUGH THE PRACTICE OF YOGA."

consumed 30 to 60 minutes before class, keeping it light and easy to digest. For hot yoga, avoid heavy or spicy meals right before class to keep digestion comfortable in the heat.”

WHAT DRINKS OR FOODS MAKE THE BEST SNACKS RELATED TO YOGA?

"Beforehand, a great snack is a banana with nut butter, a boiled egg with fruit or a small smoothie. After class, a protein smoothie, yogurt with berries, tuna with crackers or hummus with veggie sticks — plus water, coconut water or water with electrolytes to rehydrate."

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF YOGIC DIETS, SUCH AS ENERGY, MENTAL CLARITY, WORK/LIFE BALANCE?

“When you eat in a way that works for your body, you’ll have steady energy, better digestion and more mental clarity for your practice. You’ll also recover faster, reduce inflammation and feel more emotionally balanced. For heated classes, being intentional with hydration, and replenishing electrolytes, makes a huge difference in how you feel during and after class.”

Ready With Nutritional Coaching

CORNERSTONE FITNESS STUDIO ASSISTS WITH METABOLISM RESETS

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

Cornerstone Fitness Studio owner Paul Elmore says they offer nutritional coaching and metabolism reset, in conjunction with one-on-one personal training, small group training, agility honing and youth training.

"I'm a motivated health professional who has experience in every area of fitness. I've always had a deep passion for assisting others with finding their top potential and then helping them achieve it. From all that I witnessed, I learned people need much more than just diets and exercise routines," Paul states.

"I truly feel it's a privilege and a blessing to be in a position to help others improve their overall lifestyles."

To choose foods for a metabolism reset, Paul recommends focusing on nutrient-dense options that are high in protein, fiber and healthy fats, ones that require more energy to digest and help stabilize blood sugar. A diet rich in whole foods, such as those found in DASH diets, are beneficial. Specifically, the DASH diet, or Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, is a hearthealthy eating plan designed to lower blood pressure by emphasizing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, low-fat dairy and nuts, while limiting sodium (salt), added sugars and saturated fats.

Seek more ‘real’ plant-based foods and beverages that feature wholesome vegetables, nuts, seeds and plants, compared to ultra-processed plant-based choices such as potato chips and cereals, Paul says as a great first step.

To help older adults have lean body mass, Paul says they can close protein gaps based on current muscle, no matter age. "Add protein powders to sauces, or snack on protein bars."

Well-rounded, sustainable diets, such as the Mediterranean diet, are the best way to eat. Paul says the Cornerstone Fitness approach has never been

about fad diets. From Bargersville, Paul assists others with diet planning and weight loss, along with supplements and meal options.

Food industry analysts indicate the following foods and beverages in moderation help boost metabolism in overall ways: protein-rich foods, mineral-rich foods, chili peppers, coffee, tea, beans, legumes, ginger, cacao, water, seaweed and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, a unique type of fat that may offer some metabolic benefits. Most fats found in foods are long-chain triglycerides, but MCT oil comprises medium-chain triglycerides. Unlike long-chain fats, some health studies show that once MCTs are absorbed, they go directly to the liver to be turned into energy, which makes them less likely to be stored as body fat.

"We've had a lot of success in helping people learn how to eat healthier within their busy lifestyles, such as blending up green smoothies. Opt for grilled or baked foods instead of fried," Paul adds.

He says fitness is much more than just weights and cardio. "It's a lifestyle. That's the approach I take to training. It's all about the total lifestyle change. Fitness and life are really about challenging yourself to do things that you never thought you could do. That's my base philosophy on training."

Results are driven not only by motivation with Paul as a National Academy of Sports Medicine certified nutrition specialist, but through a step-by-step personalized exercise routine that best fits individual lifestyles. "I believe that working toward, and achieving, your fitness goals not only improves your appearance, but will most importantly improve your total outlook on life."

DETAILED APPROACH TO DINING

SNAG FRESH FISH, SEAFOOD AND MORE AT 'POLISHED CASUAL' BONEFISH GRILL GREENWOOD

Bonefish Grill Greenwood specializes in handcut, wood-grilled specialties and locally crafted dishes made with fresh, highest-quality ingredients. The restaurant offers a selection of classic and signature handcrafted cocktails, using just-squeezed juices, edible garnishes and house infusions, in addition to offering distinct wines to perfectly complement any food pairing.

Located just south of County Line Road on State Road 135, this restaurant has been operated by managing partner Brian Newlin since 2008. Their team often gets a nod for starting the local trend of bang bang shrimp, which is crispy fried shrimp tossed in a creamy, spicy sauce.

"I'm super proud of our homegrown managers, most all who started as hosts, bartenders, cooks or servers. And we have such a cohesive, hard-working overall team. My highest honor is when former employees allow their kids to work for me. That they had such a good experience they trust me with their most precious of people," says Brian, reflecting on his own days starting in the hospitality industry as a server at Outback Steakhouse.

In Greenwood, chef-curated selections include butterfish, bourbon-glazed salmon, ahi tuna scallops, pork chops, as well as filet with lobster tail. Additional meat selections cover chicken, trout, sea bass, mahimahi, cod, tacos, burgers plus fish and chips.

Bang Bang Shrimp at Bonefish Grill Greenwood is definitely a fan favorite.

Signature sides are coleslaw, jasmine rice, garlic whipped potatoes, broccoli and French fries. Premium, a la carte sides with entrées span bacon mac and cheese, potatoes au gratin, seasonal risotto, truffle fries and Kung Pao brussels sprouts.

Don't forget that dine-in Weekend Brunch is served at the restaurant on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. During that time, guests can secure bang bang shrimp or traditional eggs benedict, crab huevos rancheros, shrimp and grits, egg burger, crab and fontina cheese frittata, tacos and crème brûlée French toast. Specialty brunch drinks include mimosas, a mini martini flight, Whistlepig Maple Old Fashioned, Bloody Marys, espresso martini. Additionally, there are three cocktail shareable pitchers to include margaritas and sangrias.

Family bundle meals can be ordered at Bonefish, ones that combine salads, meats, fresh bread, sides and cookies.

An entire gluten-friendly menu offers starters, soups, greens, main dishes, sides and desserts.

A Bonefish kids' menu offers popcorn chicken, popcorn shrimp, fish strips, grilled chicken or shrimp and mac 'n cheese.

Ready for dessert? Those include bourbon brownies, key lime cake, drunken coconut pie, seasonal crème brûlée, seasonal cheesecake, plus espresso or cappuccino, if desired.

Social hour is hosted at Bonefish every single day between 3:30-5:30 p.m. Fun bites available during that time are ahi tuna wonton crisps, shrimp toast, beef and ginger potstickers, bangin' chicken bites, crispy cauliflower or beef and cheddar sliders.

Having a gathering, special event or corporate meeting? Bonefish provides a catering menu, which starts with packaging to serve 10.

Bonefish Grill's name originated from the love for fresh fish by the restaurant's founders Tim Curci and Chris Parker, and their discovery of the bonefish, a legendary Florida gamefish that's "admired" by anglers. The name reflects their desire to create a restaurant focused on fresh seafood and unique dining experiences.

That unique ambiance from the founders includes candlelit booths and tables locally.

"Anything and everything we can do to take care of guests and add to their happiness, we want to do. That's our Greenwood way," assures Brian. "We hope guests have many peak moments of fantastic food and professional service with us, those times during which they notice we went above and beyond in ways we didn't even have to, but more because we cared and wanted to do that for them."
