Step Out Of Your Box This Summer

As spring fades away and we all get into our summer routines of mowing the yard, travel sports and home projects, let's step back a second and get out of the box. As I've transitioned from a job that took me away from home and started working with local businesses, venues and people, I've only recently realized how much Greenwood has to offer. Hopefully by now you've recognized that when I say Greenwood, I mean the entire south side, from I-65 to the new I-69 and south into Bargersville and Franklin. I've met so many amazing people who have the best interest of our community in mind. They want to see us continue to grow and attract more great businesses and fantastic residents.

Admittedly, my free time's always been spent around the house or catering to whatever my kids were into at the time, but lately, I've branched out. I've tried really hard to find new things in the area to enjoy. In this edition, we're going to highlight some of those things, from new ways and places to get some exercise, to events at local venues and cool places to just check out. Greenwood has an amazing parks department with all kinds of activities for kids and adults alike. There are numerous summer concert series found all around the area with music for every palette. We have great breweries, water parks, local shops and fantastic restaurants. If you're just sitting around, get out there and explore our community, it won't disappoint.

Now I'm not telling you to abandon what you've always done, but I am saying that it might be tons of fun to find new things. If you have young kids, then expose them to something new. Who knows, they might find a great new hobby or love. If you have a dog, get away from the neighborhood walk and take them to a park, out for ice cream or even just to Rural King (they have popcorn and pig ears). Check out the local shops, eat at the local pubs, get involved in the community. Greenwood is such an amazing place with so many great people that if you're not out in it, you're probably missing out.

Thank you once again for reading, and a huge thank you to all of our partners for their support. We hope you enjoy this "Explore" edition of Greenwood City Lifestyle.

YIN-YANG OF YOGA

CHECK OUT STUDIO YOU YOGA'S CLASSES, WORKSHOPS, SPECIAL EVENTS

Various yoga techniques and styles await clients of Studio YOU Yoga in Greenwood, including combinations of yoga sculpt, aroma restorative/yin, Vinyasa flow, slow flow, deep stretch or heated core and HOTTT power yoga—all designed to enable practice and growth.

"Some people want stretch-only classes, some just want to relax, and some really want to move. Others are seeking relief or assistance to recover from injuries," explains Chia Chu, Studio YOU Yoga instructor and owner for the past seven years.

Others seek fresh experiences with yoga, such as the studio's upcoming brand-new workshop on July 20 titled 'Sound Acu Nidra' from 1-2:30 p.m. Chia says yoga Nidra is a powerful meditation technique producing a state of consciousness between waking and sleep. Acupuncture is a 3,000-year-old holistic healing system rooted in the principles of East Asian Medicine to improve circulation, decrease inflammation and

calm the nervous system. Sound therapy is an ancient practice using different instruments and frequencies to help shift and harmonize the mind, body and spirit. "This is going to be a special one that people will love," she adds.

Other special events this month are:

• July 20: Yoga In the Park/Greenwood Amphitheater, 10-11 a.m.

• July 27: Goat Yoga Series: Bah Bah, Blooms and Yoga at Dollie's Farm, 5-6 p.m.

• July 31: Sip & Stretch at Barn at Bay Horse Inn, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

"Our yoga with goats is one of our most popular therapeutic sessions," Chia shares.

She extends a 21-day 'Intro Offer' for $30 through which she says new clients can try and participate in as many classes with their 15 instructors as they'd like to determine which types are their best match. Because each instructor leads yoga a little differently, she says it's helpful to get this broader exposure.

"If anyone is unsure or a bit nervous about yoga, I recommend they take one or two private lessons with us. After building that confidence, students are ready to join the group classes," Chia explains.

For beginners, the studio's team strives to understand what each person's goals are. Chia says benefits from yoga include improved strength, flexibility, breathing and mental wellness while also calming a body's nervous system through anxiety and stress management. The studio's instructors say they witness clients practicing how to insert soothing pauses into extremely busy lives, as reminders of how much everyone is helped by doing so.

"We stand out because we make people feel welcomed and comfortable. Our teachers are very knowledgeable and friendly, not intimidating. And, we also offer massages," states Chia.  317.882.8733

Chia Chu

Chia's self-professed "yoga addiction" started in her home country of Taiwan, where she says she trained with wonderful yoga masters from India who influenced her understanding regarding how yoga changes lives forever. In 2014, she expanded her yoga knowledge by training to become a registered yoga teacher at Invoke Yoga in Indianapolis. She now is owner and instructor at Studio YOU Yoga in Greenwood at 862 S. State Road 135, Ste. I. Chia adds, "Through yoga, I'm willing to help and teach people to feel better for themselves. I truly believe a healthy life, a healthy body and a healthy mind all connect together. You can find all that through the practice of yoga."

SAUER DENTISTRY TEAM ALLEVIATES DISCOMFORT, FEAR, ANXIETY DURING TREATMENTS

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

PHOTOGRAPHY BY LINDY SCOTT AND AMY COUNTS

Whitney Marsh, D.M.D. and Aaron Sauer, D.D.S.

'Healthy smiles that will last' is the mission of one local, dynamic dental staff. Aaron Sauer, D.D.S., Whitney Marsh, D.M.D., and the Sauer Dentistry team in Greenwood provide comprehensive general dentistry to people of all ages living throughout Johnson County.

Individuals and families can receive all-inclusive dentistry, including preventive care, orthodontics with clear aligners, conscious sedation and root canals. Dr. Sauer says the team also offers cosmetic dentistry, including in-office and take-home teeth whitening, dental implants, crowns, bridges and veneers.

"Our team treats each visitor as a member of the family. We take time to understand everyone's individual symptoms and concerns, and then develop custom treatment plans that encourage optimal oral health and beautiful, vibrant smiles," says Dr. Marsh.

One element of the pain-free dental approach in this office is providing conscious sedation and nitrous available for patients seeking to remain comfortable due to anxiety. Conscious sedation uses oral sedatives or nitrous oxide to help patients relax during dental treatments. Contrary to popular belief, conscious sedation doesn’t cause people to fall asleep. "You might feel drowsy, but you can still follow instructions or answer your provider’s questions," explains Dr. Sauer. "We offer sedatives that are swallowed or inhaled. As a result, there is no anxiety or pain."

Conscious sedation is a good fit for patients who:

• Experience dental anxiety.

• Have a sensitive gag reflex.

• Need extensive dental work done.

• Find it difficult to sit still.

• Have low pain tolerance or incredibly sensitive teeth.

Dr. Marsh says they also apply a topical numbing solution prior to giving injections.

"We take digital X-rays and seek to catch problems earlier before issues become larger ones, and we do

digital impressions, which are more comfortable and quicker than traditional, messy alginate impressions," she states.

Sauer Dentistry practice manager Ambrosia Sauer says they provide 3D printing and crown milling in their office to minimize the number of appointments for patients. "We also have two-way text communications so patients can easily request or change a scheduled appointment," she adds.

Ambrosia says oral cameras were installed in every exam room so patients can see what the doctors see.

Dr. Sauer announces their new air polishers for dental cleanings are a gentle and effective way to remove stains and build up on teeth. "We also apply laser dentistry to minimize pain, combat infection and speed healing."

He states that Botox cosmetic and TMJ (temporomandibular) treatment can be done in the office during dental appointments to help ease overall mouth and dental comfort at home.

In addition to personal attention and customized treatments for patients, this dental staff prides themselves in being community leaders. Among the organizations they support are: Center Grove Youth Baseball; Center Grove Bantam Football; Center Grove Youth Basketball; Center Grove High School Football; Center Grove Lacrosse; Center Grove High School Choir; Center Grove High School Orchestra; Perry Meridian Football; Perry Meridian Wrestling; Greenwood High School After Prom; Greenwood Pride; Trojan Tailgater; Carefree Crocodiles Swim team; Center Grove Education Foundation; Mallow Run Winery Wine at the Line; Walk MS, National Multiple Sclerosis Society; Southport High School Mini-Movers; Southport High School The Journal; and the Center Grove High School yearbook and news magazine.

A Vineyard Seven Generations In Making

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON PROVIDED BY MALLOW RUN WINERY
Family-Operated Mallow Run Winery: Work Hard. Picnic Often.

Pie In The Sky wine is actually a reality right now at Mallow Run Winery, after being introduced last summer for the first time as a strawberry-rhubarb sweet yet tart blend. These types of American and French-hybrid varieties are creatively produced and offered from within the friendly ambiance of this 189-year-old family farm in Bargersville.

Three to six tons of grapes now are hand-harvested from the vineyard's 7 acres and carefully processed into each year’s vintage. All of these results have happened since 2000, bolstered by dreams of the family members to open a tasting room to the public.

When retired English schoolteacher John Richardson returned to the family farm before Y2K, he says his intention was to grow grapes to support other Indiana wineries. But, the operation took a different turn, one that made regional wine enthusiasts ecstatic. Mallow Run Winery became the product of years of hard work by John, his son, Bill, and Bill’s wife, Laura.  "I taught for 35 years, but as a side hobby, I made wine in my basement," says John.

The farm's namesake and John's great-great-grandfather, George Mallow, settled the property in 1835 and built a barn where the tasting room is now located at 6964 West Whiteland Road. Seven generations later, Bill says they officially opened the winery during Labor Day weekend of September 2005.

With an extensive list of 20 to 25 wines at any given time and complimentary wine tastings, Mallow Run is known for having a wide selection of vino for all different palettes and preferences. They even have wine-based ciders.

Hayley Storm, Mallow Run director of marketing, says Pie In The Sky is a small batch, limited offering that is likely to sell out quickly during July and early August.

"We take pride in crafting delicious wines, as well as a warm and welcoming atmosphere that brings our community together, one glass at a time."

Hayley says visitors are really looking forward to two special concerts on the lawn at the winery. The first, to be held Aug. 24, is "Burning Red, A show by Swifties for Swifties." The second event will be on Sept. 7 with "Gone 2 Paradise, a Jimmy Buffet experience."

"We're more than happy to provide the music memories that the community is enjoying," Hayley adds.

She says many visitors are enjoying the combination of wine with their musical summer series as well. Bands, plus a yoga event, scheduled this month include:

• July 6: Red, White, & Blueberry Festival with The Indigos

• July 7: Red, White, & Blueberry Festival with Living Proof

• July 13: 2024 Picnic Concert Series with The Doo!

• July 17: Yoga and Wine Night at The Sycamore at Mallow Run

• July 20: 2024 Picnic Concert Series with Toy Factory

• July 27: 2024 Picnic Concert Series with The Woomblies

To further embody the winery's creative flair, the staff offers the Artist Series Wine project. Every year, a special wine is released featuring label artwork from a local artist that's chosen from dozens of submissions.

Hayley says another way to engage with the winery is to participate in their 14th annual "Wine at the Line" 5-mile and 5K run/walk on Sept. 28. She says there will be food trucks, a commemorative wine glass and a post-race party with free wine tasting and live music by Mixtape. Registration is $40 each through Sept. 22; $50 on race day. Proceeds from the 2023 Wine at the Line benefited Courageous Hearts Adoptions in Greenwood. 317.422.1556

Enjoy Fresh Produce Grown Locally

New Aberdeen Farms Farm Market Now Open

A new source for locally grown produce, eggs from pasture-fed chickens, baked goods, milk, area-sourced USDA-inspected meats, dog food/treats and artisan cheeses is available at Aberdeen Farms Farm Market located inside the Aberdeen community in Center Grove at 5028 Abbeygate Blvd. Aberdeen is a premier, gated and unique wellness neighborhood.

Dena Marks, Aberdeen marketing and events manager, says the soft opening for the new market was during the Annual Strawberry Festival on June 1.

In addition to fruits and berries, Dena says the market team will continue to add produce and other food products as the season progresses, such as sweet corn, pumpkins, onions, tomatoes, asparagus, beans, lettuce, kale and apples from local orchards. "Some of the products are grown or raised at Aberdeen, and others are provided by other area farmers," she adds.

"We'll also offer butter, honey, honey sticks, jams, jellies, coffee and cut flowers at a flower bar," Dena states.

Aberdeen is considered an Agrihood, which means it's a planned community that intentionally integrates agriculture into a residential neighborhood. This lifestyle approach connects residents back to the food they're eating in a very direct way, enabling farm-to-table living, explains Mike Duke, founder and president of Duke Homes, the parent company and strategic planner of Aberdeen.

Aberdeen’s overall farm operation also provides learning opportunities through on-site educational classes that provide volunteers and residents opportunities to participate in growing and harvesting some of the produce.

Dena says the barn is a community hub anchoring the farm in its place and features the farm market. Among other elements, the farm boasts pastures for farm animals, rows upon rows of sweet corn, a pumpkin patch, an orchard and numerous plots for fresh cutting flowers, tomatoes, peppers, greens, carrots and berries.

An apothecary section at the market, Dena says, is expected to offer products such as dried lavender buds or bunches; Aberdeen Farms scented bath salts; essential oils; plus handmade goat soaps and lotions.

"Additionally, our new market will offer candles, old-fashioned candy, specialty sodas, a small assortment of landscape and garden plants and various wall and kitchen décor like tea towels and pictures," Dena announces.

For questions about the new market, email info@ aberdeenliving.com

Knightsbridge Academy Offers Faith-Based, Private Curriculum For Students In Grades 5-12

Parents of Knightsbridge Academy students indicate their youths thrive in the educational environment created at this Greenwood school. Teachers at the academy vow that their students realize possibilities are endless for those motivated to achieve and advance while excelling in academics.

Knightsbridge Academy School Director Teri Manship says, "Our curriculum is very strong academically while also nourishing the whole student and building character.”

Teri says the teachers aim to exceed Indiana's academic standards. “We deliver hands-on instruction and experiences in small group settings, which nurtures brain development and creates lifelong learners. We encourage our students to be critical thinkers, solve problems, articulate ideas and live life beyond pencil and paper.”

Students at this school also enjoy “bridge classes” designed to open doors to their futures. For example, students volunteer at various locations, as well as learn financial skills, computer skills, cursive writing, sign language, art, robotics, physical education/sports, etiquette, STEM and Spanish. Additionally, the academy's students have the opportunity to learn how to work within an innovative academic finance system in which they practice earning mock money, saving and making example deposits. They practice paying bills weekly for rent, Wi-Fi, phones and utilities, too. They also 'shop' and learn to have credit or debit cards in responsible ways.

Classroom duties also are part of Knightsbridge Academy students' responsibilities to build ownership and accountability skills.

A new offering from the academy to parents of homeschooled students is the opportunity for students to attend particular classes, such as math, science, language arts or social studies. For parents who wish to supplement their homeschool curriculum, students may enroll in one or more courses in an individual, à la carte fashion.

"Our students get what we consider 'a whole child experience,' because this is truly education, not just a school," asserts Teri.

Knightsbridge Academy

Since Knightsbridge Academy was founded in 2022 with the purpose of developing academic excellence and whole-child development, the education staff has focused on infusing academic results with these four core values: respect, integrity, compassion and honesty. School Director Teri Manship states students achieve academic excellence through both curriculum and instruction.

Knightsbridge Academy teachers say they're attuned to what students need for whole-youth educational experiences.
