Welcome To Ladies Month!

I'm excited to steal the chance to write this letter, because who better than a lady?

In this edition, we'll show you successful women from completely different types of occupations; yet they're all successful. I think for women, many of us are pulled into so many different directions that we have a hard time feeling we're successful. We want to be a great mom, a supportive wife and a great employee. We take on the role of being every thing for everyone; we sometimes lose ourselves.

Some moms feel the pull to stay at home with their kids, but also want to feel they've contributed to the family financially. We want to be successful in our careers, but then feel like we're neglecting our home life. I've been lucky enough to have been able to do both. When my kids were younger, I got to stay home with them, but I felt I was missing something. Now that my kids are older, I work full time and I feel like I miss out on things and that there are so many actions I should be doing at home. My youngest actually just said to me the other day: "I wish you were a stay at home mom and would be there when I get off the bus and make fun snacks and sit with me while I do my homework." I sat there quietly fighting back the tears. I used to be that mom, unfortunately he doesn't remember it because he was so young.

We are all successful in our own ways. Whether you chose to be a stay at home mom or you're a working mom, as long as you do your best, that is all we can do. I do challenge you to make sure you do something for yourself, don't get lost in being so much to so many. Get a massage, go on a walk or do some yoga. Go out and support the ladies in this edition. They are rocking it, from saving people, to helping people find their forever homes and to owning their own businesses. They are all rock stars. Make sure you lift up other ladies, as we are all doing our best. We're beautiful women, and we should support each other, no matter which paths are chosen.

I hope you enjoy this Ladies' edition and thank you for reading.

First-Rate First Responder: Honoring Abby Hamilton, Johnson County Sheriff's Office

For JCSO,  Abby Hamilton serves as jail matron, and has for 17 years. Her law enforcement career started in 1994. She's responsible for care of female/juvenile inmates, plus overseeing the kitchen, medical office, jail programs, commissary and inmate inquiries. She says establishing mutual respect is the foundation. "Those here are glad someone's helping them get answers they need," she adds. "It's my job to protect the office and show we're held to the highest standards."

First-Rate First Responder: Honoring Hannah Rush, Johnson County Sheriff's Office

Also serving JCSO is Hannah Rush, merit deputy. She started law enforcement as a 911 dispatcher. "When I handled calls, I wanted to go help people more than just speak with them," she recalls. She went through a dark grief period when 17 years old after her mother passed on. "I relay to people I personally know grief can swallow them, that I've been where they are, and I promise them it does get better."

First-Rate First Responder: Honoring Anjela Davenport, Bargersville Police Department

Anjela Davenport has been a LE officer in Indiana since October 2008, formerly serving in the US Air Force. Her influence was her grandmother, who served in the military during the Korean war. "I fell in love with the idea of serving the country, while protecting rights/freedoms and being a good human being." Her motivation is to help/save innocent persons from crime, crises and mistakes. "I bring love and patience that God shows me, showing there's still hope."

First-Rate First Responder: Honoring Jessica Hester, Bargersville Police Department

Jessica Hester says her biggest inspiration for this career is a female IMPD officer, Breann Leath, who was killed in the line of duty. She says, "Breann loved and cared for those she served, and that’s when I felt my calling. We as officers get called when someone's potentially having one of their worst days, and I'm reminded every day to 'be like Bre' by wearing her badge number on my work vest every shift."

ALL THAT'S DONE FOR COMMUNITY RESIDENTS 24/7 IS APPRECIATED

HOMETOWN HERO | LIFE + CULTURE
White River Township Fire Department /

Honor. Courage. Sacrifice. Greenwood City Lifestyle asked local female first responders and public service professionals from where they get their unwavering, day-to-day inspiration for their careers.

The following seven women represent White River Township Fire Department, anchored from Greenwood-based stations:

Anne Peege , civilian paramedic, says she returned to further education in her 30s so she could do something "outside of the box" in the medical field. She adds, "Helping people in different emergency settings is one of the most inspiring parts of this job. However, we see people on some of their worst days, and I appreciate being able to make a positive difference for them. I try to treat patients like I would want my kids or parents treated when they're scared and can't understand what all is going on during an emergency."

Brittany Chisholm , civilian paramedic, says since she was very young, she wanted a career through which she could help others; at first, she considered becoming a doctor. "But I really appreciate being able to be the first one there for someone going through an emergency, to be the peace in their storms," she explains. "I don't want them to feel alone. And, I like showing my two daughters they, too, can break 'the glass ceiling.'"

Brittney Thomas , civilian paramedic, is a former middle school teacher. "Now as a paramedic, I still get to educate students about this type of career, and hope

that I'm inspiring them to find a job they can be so passionate about, it doesn't feel like a job. I'm thankful to serve my community with compassion and empathy."

Chelsea Spina, a civilian paramedic for the past 18 years, says she enjoys being a role model to her six children, showing them, especially her two daughters, they can tackle complex goals. She says it's great to have many more women as paramedics compared to two decades ago. "I really enjoy helping people in their own environments, because that's where they feel the most comfortable about being open so I can learn about them and help them the most," she adds.

Kelsey Gray, civilian paramedic, verifies the urge to help people motivates her, along with making a positive difference in the community. She previously worked for a decade as a medical assistant in urgent care, emergency services and doctor offices, and says she enjoys the constant change in her current role. "I also want to provide a good example to my three daughters and show them that they can accomplish whatever they want to."

Miranda Jansen , EMT, shares that she's motivated by helping the community and individuals. "Working at the firehouse is like having a second family. Some people apologize after calling 911 or stopping by the station because they believe it's burdening us, but they didn't know what else to do. That's sweet of them, but helping them is why we do what we do. One of the

challenges to daily calls is determining what might be really happening overall with someone's health, after getting called into what's actually a symptom, like difficulty breathing."

Tracey Meacham , EMT, confirms that being able to help others in their time of need, any time of the day, motivates her day-to-day. "We spend 24 hours away from our families, which is about a one-third of our lives. We have our home families and our work families. Both are awesome," she proclaims. She says her passion areas are mental health and the elderly. "I enjoy helping to make 'their crises' better instead of worse. I wouldn't trade this job for the world!"

Additional White River Township Fire Department female EMT personnel include  Alicia Fritschi, Cam Key, Brookelyn Lady-Kent, Tammy Mabrey, Makenzie Sego and Allison Smith .

Bargersville Community Fire Department include 18 EMS personnel:  Abigail Burris, Brittany Chisholm, Kaycie Chittum, Cathy Durkalski, Morgan Harker, Cassandra Hartman, Katrina Held, Hallie Howard, Cameron Key, Kryrsten Lux, Mikinna Mascoe, Liza Nash, Tiffany Patterson, Jamie Rehm, Sierra Sichting, Amanda Swartz, Amanda Taylor and Holly Vandegriff

Liza Nash says knowing that she's able to respond to others with compassionate care inspires her daily. "Meeting them where they are and helping them find care or resources in their time of need motivates me, even if they just need a listening ear," she adds.

Dana Ruark started with the Greenwood Fire Department during April 2018. Her primary responsibility is as a firefighter/EMT, however, she's also a backup engineer, being certified to drive the fire engine and operate the pump system on the apparatus. She also recently was cleared as a ride-out officer, which means that when there is not an officer on the rig, she steps in as acting officer for the time-being, as needed.

GREENWOOD CITY LIFESTYLE honors sacrifices made by local first responders, often at the cost of time with their own families. On behalf of readers, community leaders, business teams and volunteers, we salute you, while realizing no mere words seem truly adequate to express the admiration and gratitude you all deserve.

BAYBERRY SPA PROFESSIONALS ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT DELIVERING RELAXING SPA VISITS

“"Let us help you escape from the daily stressors of life by relaxing and rejuvenating your mind, body and soul."

When Jennifer Hagner co-launched Bayberry Spa LLC during 2018, she says she hoped to create a calming space in which compassionate, like-minded professionals who were passionate about helping people could collectively provide self-care services to clients who were treated "more than well."

"The growth since then has been amazing," she now reflects.

As a nationally board-certified massage therapist and former instructor, Jen says she and her team deliberately take time to customize their services to each client's needs. She adds that Bayberry Spa's luxurious signature spa treatments incorporate products from the whimsical, natural bath and body collection by FarmHouse Fresh, a skin care company that intentionally produces natural and organic body care products.

Part of what inspires Jennifer personally is creating a culture of connectivity for all involved and continuing education for her staff. "We're all about nurturing, positive energy, encouragement and being a model for well-being. Also, included in our fees are bonus services that other massage providers charge extra for."

Why should spa services be infused into individual lives? Jen says demands on people are made everywhere they go. "We want to be a haven to clients, where when they walk in the door, it's a different feeling. Where they breathe a sigh of relief. Where they can slow down and know we're going to listen to their needs and truly take care of them."

She says they change their product offerings by season, particularly related to scents.

GREENWOOD PHOTOGRAPHER HOLDS LIFE STILL FOR INSTANTS TO FOREVER SAVOR

ARTIST’S PALETTE | ARTS + CULTURE
This is an example of how Donna combines photographer and Corel Painter techniques.
28
Donna
delights in doing senior portraits.

Recording life's moments creatively through unique children's pictures, beautiful baby images, fun family photos, senior class portraits, small product images, food photos, architectural representations and business headshots is Donna Rice, founder of Donna Rice Photography in Greenwood at 300 N. Madison Ave.

"I truly enjoy photography because it's equivalent to stopping a moment in time," she confirms.

Donna started her full-time photography career in 1997 by opening a studio. More recently, she took Winona School of Professional Photography classes for a digital art application called Corel Painter. ''I fell in love with its endless possibilities, and this fine art is now one of my client services in addition to my studio work," she adds.

This visual artist says her affinity for photography started when she was 9 years old. Her passion for photography grew while in high school through photography courses. Her parents supported her devotion by adding a darkroom for her when they had a new garage built.

"I even saved my money from babysitting to buy equipment for the darkroom," she recalls.

Donna is a member of the Professional Photographers of America; Indianapolis Professional Photographers Guild; and Aspire Johnson County+Chamber Alliance. She handles photographic styles ranging from casual to elegant, and provides commercial photography for clients such as Aspire Johnson County+Chamber Alliance, Franciscan St. Francis, Sertoma Club of Greenwood, JCBank, Mutual Savings Bank, SCS Construction and The City of Greenwood Police Department.

She provides photo sessions yearround. Featured here are a few samples of her work.

The Power of "Place"

Everybody is familiar with Sit and Down but don’t underestimate the value of teaching your dog the "place" command. It can significantly improve their behavior and be a useful tool early in your training sessions. This command involves instructing your dog to go to a specific spot and stay there until released, offering several benefits.

"Place" teaches boundary skills, helping your dog understand where they should be and stay, which can reduce anxiety and promote calmness. It also serves as a management tool, ensuring your dog stays in a safe area for introductions to new things or when you can't supervise closely.

Additionally, practicing "place" enhances obedience and impulse control, as your dog learns to wait patiently. This command also builds focus, encouraging your dog to pay attention to you and the training session. Incorporate "place" into your training routine using positive reinforcement for best results!

To date, 100+ Women Who Care Johnson County members have awarded $400,000-plus “no-strings-attached” awards in total across the county.

100+ WOMEN who care

JOHNSON COUNTY

During December 2015, four women joined forces to launch a Johnson County chapter of the international 100+ Who Care Alliance giving circle program. By March 2017, 100+ Women Who Care Johnson County reached an important milestone of 100 members, and the group presented their first $10,000 check.

Gail Richards, one of the four 100+ local founders and Johnson County Community Foundation immediate past-president/CEO, says the chapter is growing strong, including members from Greenwood, Center Grove and Bargersville.

"Membership is not limited, so the potential to help is endless," she adds.

Some of the local, 100+ grant recipients since 2016 to present include: Esperanza Ministries; Haven Sanctuary for Women; The Social of Greenwood; The Alex and Ali Foundation; Beats for Bristol; Coffeehouse Five; Angelcare; Uplift Johnson County; Joshua Center; and Creative Grounds Fine Arts Academy.

Within these 10 local recipients, that's a collective total of $126,100 granted! Since inception, the group has donated overall to nearly 35 organizations or charitable initiatives.

Nicol Spradlin, 100+ Women Who Care charter member and current co-chair, says annual membership averages 120-140. Upcoming meetings are May 2, Aug. 1 and Nov. 7 at 4:45 p.m. at Barn At Bay Horse Inn.

The group’s leadership believes 100+ Women Who Care is a perfect fit for any philanthropically minded woman. It's a great option for those who want to give back and can’t participate in time-intensive volunteer roles. Members agree to a $500 annual contribution, often paid in $100 increments, and attendance at as many quarterly meetings as possible. Visit JCCF.org.

At press time, this charitable group had 122 members.
