A City Built on Style

The September issue is all about style! When thinking about what style means to Greensboro, I couldn’t help but lean into the architecture and build side.

In Irving Park, you see the timeless elegance of Georgian and Tudor Revival homes.  Starmount Forest and Sedgefield bring the comfort of traditional ranches and colonial facades, often anchored by country club views and wide lawns. Lake Jeanette leans more transitional, with clean lines, open floor plans, and lakefront living. Then there's Kirkwood and Latham Park, where you’ll find charming cottages, minimal traditionals, and bungalows tucked beneath canopies of trees—each home full of character and care.

As the granddaughter of an architect, I’ve always been drawn to the details: a perfectly placed window, the quiet symmetry of a well-balanced exterior, or how a front door sets the tone for everything inside. Greensboro’s neighborhoods have always celebrated those details, and that’s what makes our city not just beautiful, but meaningful.

Our cover this month features the stunning work of Frye Build + Design. Their story highlights their commitment to preserving the charm and character in our historic neighborhoods and a team that values collaboration and creative expression to bring each client's unique style to life. We also share the story of Susan Campbell, who I had the pleasure of sitting down with this summer. Bringing her product idea to fruition has been a journey of faith, patience, and grit. And don’t miss the 4 must-try spots recommended by local real estate leaders Kaye Brinkley and Emma Skelton.

Thank you for being part of our community. Here’s to embracing your style and celebrating the beauty of every day.

With warmest regards,

September 2025

ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET

Everyone dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get our time and attention. Follow our nine tips for transforming and elevating your closet. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying these guidelines will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

FACE CLOTHES THE SAME DIRECTION

It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.

8 WAYS TO ORGANIZE AND INJECT STYLE INTO YOUR SPACE
ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS | PHOTOGRAPHY
BY CASSANDRA CASTANEDA

USE REAL ESTATE WISELY

Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. A large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

02 03 04 05

HIDDEN STORAGE

Hidden storage is a game changer in keeping a closet visually clean. Tuck folded clothes behind closed cabinet doors if the space is multipurpose. The floor-toceiling built-ins in Keri’s closet contain folded clothes, athleisure and other items she needs as she gets ready each day. Tuck away the least-used items: Use hidden storage and the very top of the closet for out-of-season items and stuff only worn a few times a year.

NEGATIVE SPACE

Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.

ORGANIZE BY KIND AND COLOR

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

UPGRADED HANGERS

The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner!

BAG & SHOE STORAGE

Alternate the way shoes are facing. This ultimately helps fit more on each row and provide a visually appealing way to display those prized possessions.

Everyone understands the frustration of searching for that one clutch when rushing out for the evening. Bags benefit from a space all their own. Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily.

MAKE A STATEMENT

Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.

DESIGNED WITH HEART

Inside the culture of a design-build team that treats every home like their own.

Around Greensboro, Frye Build + Design has gained recognition for its general contracting and design services that breathe new life into old spaces. The team prides itself on preserving the charm and historical character of beloved properties throughout the city—from Irving Park and Sunset

“We have each other’s backs and do whatever needs to be done to finish a project successfully.”

Hills to Westerwood and Starmount—while incorporating modern conveniences and eye-catching flair. That unique combination of skill and vision stems from years of experience, long before Pam Frye officially launched the business in 2018.

Years earlier, under the guidance of a mentor, Pam learned the ins and outs of home and property management—from handling repairs and renovations to organizing subcontractors and overseeing rental properties. That hands-on experience led her to earn her general contractor’s license in 2003. Soon, people began asking if she could remodel their kitchens. Without a team of her own, it was just Pam and a group of subcontractors. The work kept coming, and although there was never a formal business plan, the steady

exposure to home design and renovation sparked something in her. “I found that I really liked it—I felt secure about it, and I was pretty good at it,” Pam says. “There was always something new to learn, and I was always challenged.”

Much has changed since those early days, but Pam’s passion for the work remains. Today, she leads an impressive team of around 21 full-time employees and maintains a strong network of subcontractors and vendors. Her leadership has cultivated a collaborative, welcoming, and dynamic work environment—one that attracts talented professionals who approach each project with energy and a team-first attitude.

“We have some of the kindest people,” Pam shares, reflecting on the team at Frye Build +

Design. “Everybody’s here to bring to the table what they do best and give their all. Everybody’s here for the right reasons.”

Zach Baldwin joined Frye four years ago as an assistant. Although he had little construction experience at the time, he quickly learned the ropes and now plays a key role on the estimating team. Always willing to lend a hand, Zach’s can-do attitude is emblematic of the Frye culture. “We have each other’s backs and do whatever needs to be done to finish a project successfully, satisfy the client, and at the end of the day be proud of what we do,” he says.

The Frye team understands that home remodeling can involve a lot of questions and decisions for clients. “We break things down so it’s not overwhelming,” explains Lauren Welch, lead interior designer. Lauren focuses on creating functional spaces with unique finishes and materials but knows their work goes beyond design. “It’s more than remodeling a home—we’re actively building relationships with the people that we’re working with and with the communities that we’re in,” she says.

One of Lauren’s frequent collaborators is Karen Murdock, who brings more than 20 years of design experience to Frye. Karen specializes in cabinetry—from kitchens and baths to libraries, offices, and built-ins. She works closely with estimators early in the process and oversees installation, but her favorite part is seeing the final result. “Knowing people are waking up and loving their environment is so rewarding.”

“It’s more than remodeling a home— we’re actively building relationships with the people that we’re working with and with the communities that we’re in.”

These days, the Frye team has a particularly personal project underway—renovating Pam’s own home. “I was looking to move to a smaller home with the primary bedroom on the first floor,” Pam says, explaining her decision to stay in Sunset Hills. That vision led to a full remodel of a charming older property with plans for an open floor plan. It’s been a fun, collaborative experience with her team. Pam has enjoyed the opportunity to experience the process from the client’s perspective. “I certainly feel all the love that the staff gives to clients,” she says.

Whether they’re collaborating on a custom kitchen, guiding a homeowner through a renovation, or even remodeling Pam’s own house, the Frye team brings the same energy, care, and commitment to every project. It’s a culture built on trust, mutual respect, and shared passion—and it extends beyond the job site. From cheering together at a Greensboro Grasshoppers game to grabbing milkshakes at Yum Yum’s, the team genuinely enjoys each other’s company. “We all know we’re in this together,” says Pam—and that spirit is at the heart of everything Frye Build + Design does.

PORCH-PERFECT DESIGNS MADE WITH LOVE IN NORTH CAROLINA

ARTICLE BY KARI SMITH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRAND AND BLOOM PHOTOGRAPHY

Susan Campbell never imagined that casually flipping through a design magazine would lead to the launch of a brandnew business. After spending years as a stay-at-home mom and working as an optician, she found unexpected inspiration during a quiet moment of leisure, captivated by images of a sidewalk lined with boxwoods wrapped in burlap. “Wouldn’t it be cool,” she thought, “if they were wrapped in fabric that actually reflected our style?” That question planted the seed for what would soon become her passion project.

What Susan envisioned was a stylish planter cover—an easy way to elevate seasonal plants. “I would go to the plant nurseries and try to find a similar look but it just didn’t exist. It drove me to figure that out. I was solving my own problem,” recalls Susan.

What she eventually developed was a solution for disguising unsightly landscaping pots, and a simple way to add elegance and charm to any home. She named the planter covers So.CachePots pronounced “so-cash-po,” a playful twist on “south” and “cachepot,” which is something used to hide a pot. The product is patent-pending. She launched it under her new company, South23rd , taking inspiration from the address of the first home she and her husband purchased more than three decades ago.

The journey to create So.CachePots wasn’t easy. But what Susan lacked in business acumen, she made up for in determination. “Manufacturing was not in my wheelhouse,” she admits. “I truly believe God gifted me this idea,” she says. “He has opened so many

doors.” From that moment on, Susan wasted no time turning her porch-inspired epiphany into a reality. Each meeting and conversation brought her closer to making her product come to life. If someone couldn’t help her, they referred her to someone who could. Through trial and error, she eventually connected with Jimmy Combs of Tsuga in Boone and the third-generation Trotters Sewing Company in Asheboro to bring her prototypes and production needs to life.

Today, all products are made in North Carolina and shipped directly from Susan’s basement. Online orders through her website and artisan shows serve as her brand’s primary sales channels. Susan now participates in nearly 20 shows a year, including the Southern Christmas Show in Charlotte, Southern Charm at the Farm in Mocksville, and Bizarre Bazaar in Richmond, Virginia. These seasonal events—especially in the fall—remain her biggest sales drivers. With packaging handled in-house, she’s managed to scale while staying hands-on in every detail.

to feel fresh, but also like something you’ll love year after year,” she says. Advance Digital, near the South Carolina border, prints her designs onto the material, and she’s currently collaborating with an artist in Asheboro to create new patterns.

For Susan, launching South23rd has been a journey of faith, patience, and grit. Her advice to fellow entrepreneurs is simple: “Trust your gut, trust yourself. If this is your passion … then don’t give in.”

“I truly believe God gifted me this idea. He has opened so many doors.”

She continues to balance business growth with family life and often finds inspiration while browsing local boutiques like Simply Meg’s (1616-H Battleground Ave. in Greensboro) and Pineapple Porch (8414 US-158 in Stokesdale).

Always on the lookout for trending patterns and styles, Susan thoughtfully curates each fabric with a blend of trendiness and timeless appeal. “It has

“My husband is awesome; he helps me load in and load out. My mom will help me put stickers on bags or she’ll help me pack products. But the rest of it is me”—for now. Looking ahead, Susan has her sights set on the Atlanta Market in January to introduce So.CachePots to boutique retailers. With new packaging in the works and hopes of hitting store shelves by spring, her stylish solution is ready to take root beyond the porch—and into homes across the country.

LIVING STYLE in

THE INTERSECTION OF FASHION AND HOME

ART DIRECTION

Amy Appleton

STYLING

Tyler Amadeus

MODELS

Amy Appleton and Elena Weber

IN this unexpected love affair, fashion and interiors are more than just a simple pairing—they are rooted in culture, creativity, and the human desire for self-expression.

As conscious consumers of the 21st century, participating in a retail landscape that is oversaturated and struggling to adapt to the ever-changing demands of the modern customer, our purchasing power should not only respond to a feeling of want but also prioritize items that reflect who we are and who we aspire to be. This is clearly visible through the representation of fashion and interiors.

Although we tend to consider cost-per-wear primarily when it comes to clothing, this same principle applies to furniture and the function it brings to the home. Aesthetics and functionality both play a role in this pairing, painting a picture for the rest of the world of who the wearer is and how they live in their space.

The woman who wears a blazer with sharp shoulders that makes her feel powerful in her everyday life—or the black dress that gives her a necessary boost of confidence—may naturally gravitate toward sleek, modern furniture that feels equally strong and elevates the space where the modern woman thrives.

In the same way, someone who prefers an effortless ensemble—like their favorite white T-shirt and comfortable denim jeans—may also look for home pieces that are functional and make their guests

feel at ease. Even a handmade rug, one that sparks conversation about where it was found and adds a focal point to a room, mirrors how we search our closets for a sweater tied to a cherished memory.

Just as we carefully choose outfits to express ourselves, it’s equally important to ensure that our living spaces are designed with the same intention. More than ever, modern buyers are making purchasing decisions based on personal morals and values, forming a new wave of consumers who seek products that are both high-quality and environmentally or socially conscious, whether for themselves or their homes.

The following imagery affirms that living a timeless lifestyle across all aspects of life is possible through the thoughtful styling of sustainable clothing and vintage furniture. As the modern retail landscape continues to evolve, it’s become increasingly vital to make conscious consumer choices—ones that allow us to express our truest selves through both our wardrobes and the places we call home.
