The Men’s Issue

Specializing

Reconstructive

A Note from the Publisher’s Assistant

Hi Friends!

As the Publisher Assistant for the Greeley Lifestyle Magazine, I have the privilege of overseeing our editorial content and working closely with our Publisher, Tara Rasmuson, to bring each issue to life. This month’s Men's Issue is one I hold close to my heart, as it offers a meaningful look at the men in our community who lead, serve, and inspire in unique and powerful ways.

I moved to Greeley over 12 years ago to attend the University of Northern Colorado, where I earned both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. Since then, I’ve grown deep roots here—volunteering, working, and connecting through many roles in this vibrant community. One of those roles has been with the Greeley Stampede, which continues to be a tradition I’m proud to be part of.

In this issue, we hear the story of the hardworking owner behind Pawnee Buttes Seed Inc. and his legacy of land and leadership. We learn about the passion and purpose driving the owner of Foundations Sports Nutrition—and how his “why” shapes everything he does. And, just in time for summer, we explore the perfect local staycation spot: the stunning Gaylord of the Rockies, only an hour outside Greeley.

Beyond the pages of this magazine, the importance of strong, supportive men is something I feel deeply. My husband has been a constant supporter—encouraging every dream and cheering every leap—and my beautiful son has given me a new perspective on what matters most. Watching him grow has been one of life’s greatest gifts.

I hope this issue leaves you feeling inspired and grateful for the incredible men who help build our community, care for their families, and lead with quiet strength. And to all the amazing dads—Happy Father’s Day. You are appreciated more than words can say.

Greeley wouldn’t be Greeley without you.

Sincerely yours,

June 2025

ROOTED IN THE LAND

DON HIJAR'S LEGACY AT PAWNEE BUTTES SEED INC., CONNECTING PEOPLE TO THE LAND

Nestled quietly in Greeley, Pawnee Buttes Seed Inc. is more than just a seed company—it’s a steward of Colorado’s natural landscape, a trusted partner to landowners and land managers, and a reflection of the man at its helm: Don Hijar.

Don’s journey begins in Sugar City, Colorado, a small town once built around a booming sugar factory. Growing up on irrigated farmland, Don spent his childhood thinning and hoeing beets—his summer vacations were spent not on beaches but in the furrows of hard work. Though he didn’t know it at the time, those long days under the sun were planting more than crops; they were cultivating a deep respect for soil, plants, and people who live close to the land.

After earning a degree in animal science from Colorado State University, Don worked for the Soil Conservation Service. There, he learned how to read the land—understanding not just the science of soils and plants but also the needs of the people who rely on them. That blend of technical knowledge and practical empathy laid the foundation for what would become a lifelong mission.

In 1984, Don entered the seed business. “If you had asked me then how long I’d last, I probably would’ve said a year,” he laughs. “It didn’t seem like it had anything to do with animal science or soils.” But that first year quickly grew into something more. “Everything starts with a seed,” he says, reflecting on a simple yet powerful truth that continues to guide him today.

By 1998, Don had spent 14 years managing a seed branch in Greeley when the opportunity came to buy it. With the support and encouragement of his first wife, Janine, he took the leap— laying the foundation for what would become Pawnee Buttes Seed Inc.

The name they chose together was inspired by the striking landforms and vast grasslands of northeastern Colorado. “We wanted something local, something that felt like home,” Don says.

From the beginning, the business was built on quality and trust. “Anybody can sell seed,” Don explains. “But selling the right seed? That’s what matters.” Specializing in native grasses, wildflowers, shrubs, and wetland species, the company works closely with both private landowners and public land managers. Each seed mix is carefully crafted to suit Colorado’s diverse soils and climates, helping restore rangelands, support conservation efforts, and beautify open spaces.

Don’s passion goes beyond plants—it’s about people, too. “If my employees don’t feel good about what they do, even great pay won’t keep them here,” he says. “They have to believe in our purpose.” That belief has created a workplace culture rooted in integrity, education, and doing right by the land and each other. “What goes out the door matters,” Don insists. “We don’t just sell a product—we help people succeed.”

Pawnee Buttes Seed’s community impact runs deep. The company supports local Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapters, sponsors statewide grass identification competitions, and works with conservation organizations like Colorado Open Lands and Bird Conservancy of the Rockies. Whether it’s helping protect farmland through conservation easements or promoting habitat for native birds, Don’s dedication to the land shows up in countless, quiet ways.

One of his favorite contributions is the annual Grass Tour, which brings together students, landowners, and land managers from across the state—and beyond—to learn about native grasses and how to care for open spaces. “The furthest we’ve had someone come is California,” Don notes with pride. “It’s about education, about connecting people to the land.”

That connection is perhaps the heart of Don’s legacy. He envisions a future where open space still stretches between towns, where grasses sway in the breeze, and wildflowers bloom each spring. He hopes that with every seed sold, Pawnee Buttes Seed Inc. helps protect a piece of Colorado’s natural heritage. “Even if you never walk on that land,” he says, “you get to drive by and see something beautiful. And that matters.”

After nearly 41 years in the seed business—and 27 years as a business owner—Don still finds joy in every growing season. With no plans to slow down, he continues to lead with humility, humor, and a genuine love for Colorado. A big part of that continued passion is thanks to his wife, Casey, whose insight and encouragement help keep him grounded and inspired. “This is my home,” he says. “And taking care of it—that’s something worth planting your life in.”

DAVID OEHLMAN PUTS COLORADO BBQ ON THE MAP WITH SMOKIN’ DAVE’S

ARTICLE BY

| PHOTOGRAPHY BY EDGAR MORALES

David Oehlman lives in the kitchen. Born and raised in Los Angeles, David has been cooking since 1990. His eponymous franchise, Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ & Brew, began in 2007 in Estes Park, though he has lived in Colorado since 1995. In February of this year, Greeley became the latest city to join Lyons, Longmont, and Denver as a host to Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ.

Despite David’s longstanding personal connection to Greeley—his daughter attended the University of Northern Colorado—he knew the city only in passing, as a stop along the drive out east. But Weld County called to him. When David saw 819 9th St., the building that would become Smokin’ Dave’s, he instantly and absolutely fell in love with it. The interior boasts original tin ceiling tiles (as seen in other downtown Greeley buildings) and the iconic set of ceiling fans on a rotating belt.

Cat Oehlman, David’s wife, was an integral part of opening the Greeley location—she supervised the interior design, which involved repainting and renovating the plumbing, electrical, and kitchen equipment. The pair wanted to keep the charm of the building, so they didn’t disturb many of the original elements.

Greeley appealed to the Oehlmans because of its perfect size. The city was big enough to establish Smokin’ Dave’s on its own terms but small enough that they could make a difference in the lives of their employees and the community as a whole. Smokin’ Dave’s sponsors the Colorado Grit Hockey team, and David hopes to partner with other sports teams, high schools, and events in the city.

For the last 35 years, David has learned and cooked as a “back of house guy.” His culinary experience means all the meat preparation methods, recipes, and even four house sauces are all his own creation. David is proud of all the restaurant’s beef options; his expansive business allows him to partner with cattle companies and farmers to affordably source all his products. Of the entire menu, ribs are David’s favorite because he “likes to get down and dirty with them!” He particularly likes “when the baked beans and coleslaw intertwine on the plate.”

David’s passion for food and meticulous training establish Colorado in the ranks of Barbecue States. Stop by Smokin’ Dave’s so you, too, can fall in love with the building’s architecture and Cat’s interior design. Try one, two, or all four house sauces; mix them with your ribs and side dishes—just as David does—and taste for yourself why all of Colorado is raving about Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ.

From Mountain Cabins to Wide-Open Acres, Rural 1st Helps You Turn the Land of Your Dreams into Reality

ARTICLE BY SUSAN MCKENZIE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALYSSA BENSON
Austin Griffith and Kaleb Barton with their hunting dogs
“We’re just normal guys helping people do cool stuff— here to help you every step of the way.”

If you’ve ever dreamed of owning a few acres of land, building a home in the mountains, or buying land for hunting, you’re not alone. As the leader in rural lending, Rural 1st specializes in making rural living possible for everyday people looking to fulfill their dreams. Local experts Austin Griffith and Kaleb Barton represent Rural 1st from their Greeley-based office and are ready to assist those looking to make a move to rural living.

Rural 1st was launched in 2018 as part of Farm Credit Mid-America, a cooperative with more than 100 years of agricultural lending experience. While many traditional lenders step in and out of rural lending depending on the market, Rural 1st specializes in financing rural real estate. They’re uniquely positioned to help you buy land, build a home, or finance a property without the strict timelines for starting construction you would find elsewhere.

Whether you want a place to keep horses, build a barndominium, have your own fishing spot, or simply live away from the hustle and bustle of city limits, Austin and Kaleb understand your needs because they, too, live the rural lifestyle. They’re not just lenders; they’re outdoor enthusiasts who understand the importance of land, wells, fence lines, and water rights—details that traditional lenders often overlook.

From the Front Range to the high country, Rural 1st covers the entirety of Colorado. “We can come in with a lower down-payment structure and no maximum acreage caps. Some lenders stop at 35 or 40 acres—we can do more than 100,” Kaleb notes. A unique offering is their rate conversion program*, which lets you lower your interest rate without a complicated refinancing process. Not to mention, your loan stays in-house for the entirety of the term; Rural 1st is there from the first payment to the last.

A customer-owned cooperative, Rural 1st answers to its members, ensuring that every decision is made with your best interests at heart. Austin and Kaleb invite you to reach out—even if you’re just in the dreaming phase. “We’re just normal guys helping people do cool stuff,” they say. “We’re here to help you every step of the way.”

At Rural 1st, financing your rural dreams isn’t just a business — it’s your reality.

BEHIND the SCENES

Few events capture the heart of a community quite like the Greeley Stampede. Rooted in tradition and pulsing with energy, the Stampede is a cornerstone of summer in Northern Colorado—a place where memories are made, legacies are honored, and the spirit of the West comes alive.

This signature celebration isn’t pulled off by accident; it takes an immense amount of coordination and dedication from a committed team that includes a full-time staff, an engaged committee, and over 300 volunteers who give their time and talents to make it all happen.

In the pages that follow, we step behind the curtain to spotlight eight men serving in a variety of roles—each playing a vital part in the coordination, passion, and purpose that fuels this iconic celebration. Among the many people who contribute to the Greeley Stampede, these men represent a powerful cross-section of leadership, tradition, and hands-on dedication.

Justin Watada, the Stampede’s CEO, has been at the helm since 2015, guiding operations with a calm, steady approach and a deep respect for the legacy of the event.

“THERE’S SO MUCH happening BEHIND THE SCENES AND WE’RE
Jesse Leos, Committee General Chairman Tracy Damrell, Foundation Chairman
Kevin McFarling, Marketing Manager

Jesse Leos, serving as the Committee General Chairman, brings nearly a decade of involvement and a passion for mentoring the next generation of volunteers. His journey began volunteering with the beverage team, and now, he leads a 10-member volunteer committee that makes critical decisions throughout the year.

Tracy Damrell, the Greeley Stampede Foundation Chairman, ensures that education remains at the heart of the Stampede by championing scholarships for local students—planting seeds of opportunity that will grow long after the dust of each summer has settled. His reason for giving his time is simple: “We’re making a difference in the lives of kids and ensuring the Stampede is around for another 100 years.”

Kevin McFarling, the Marketing Manager, is one of the full-time staff members who ensures that the public hears the Stampede’s story. As a Greeley native, Kevin has a genuine enthusiasm for the event, connecting the Stampede to the community year-round.

The impact of volunteerism is powerfully embodied by men like Tracy Golightly, the Trailboss for Grounds—he oversees the preparation and maintenance of the grounds during the event, ensuring everything runs smoothly and safely. As a longstanding volunteer, his experience and dedication make him an integral part of the Stampede, contributing to its success in countless ways. Tracy has been involved since 2013 and leads with humility, always quick to give credit to others.

Aaron Lichtenberg, named the 2024 Wrangler Volunteer of the Year, represents the best of the volunteer spirit. Born into the tradition, with both parents deeply rooted in the event, Aaron’s connection to the Stampede is undeniable. Last year,

“THIS EVENT IS SO much more THAN JUST THE thrill OF RODEOS, THE ENERGY OF CONCERTS, OR THE excitement OF ENTERTAINMENT.”
- KEVIN MCFARLING

he became the youngest person to receive the prestigious Wrangler Top Hand award, a true reflection of his passion and dedication to the event. With 10 years under his belt, Aaron has served in nearly every capacity possible, showing up wherever he’s needed with a smile.

James Herman, a past committee member, now known as an Old Bucker, has been a fixture of the Stampede since 1974. His decades-long connection to the event is rooted in family tradition, civic pride, and the simple joy of being part of something bigger than himself.

Lastly, this year’s Grand Marshal (alongside Kelly Quick), Ron Wildeman, has contributed to the Stampede for over 20 years in a range of roles. When asked why he’s remained involved so long, Ron shared, “It’s the people. You build relationships here that last a lifetime.”

Each of these men brings not only their title, but also a personal purpose that fuels their commitment to the event and to the community it celebrates. Behind the scenes, however, the effort to make the Greeley Stampede a success is far more complex than some might imagine.

CONTINUED >

Tracy Golightly, Trailboss for Grounds
Aaron Lichtenberg, Wrangler

For these dedicated men, it’s not just about showing up for the event itself; it’s about months of planning, preparation, and an unyielding commitment to the community. From Tracy Damrell’s commitment to education through the Foundation’s scholarships to Aaron Lichtenberg’s role in the Wrangler volunteer program, every detail is attended to with a level of precision that is often invisible to the public.

“The work that goes into preparing the grounds, maintaining them during the event, and ensuring everything is set up just right requires a lot of behind-the-scenes coordination,” Aaron says. Jesse Leos also speaks to the massive coordination required for the event, which includes overseeing the many moving parts that ensure a seamless experience. “It’s not just about showing up on the day of the event; it’s about ensuring that all of our volunteers are trained, the infrastructure is in place, and the logistics are sorted months in advance,” he says.

While the public sees the exciting moments—the rodeo, concerts, and carnival—what’s often unnoticed is the preparation and adjustments that happen behind the scenes. The work of this team involves constant communication, problem-solving, and dedication to fine-tuning every element of the Stampede, whether it’s securing sponsors, organizing events, or getting the right resources to make it all happen.

James Herman, in his own way, reflects on how every job—no matter how small—contributes to the overall experience. “You might not always get noticed, but that’s part of the job,” James shares. “It’s about ensuring everything is perfect so the event goes off without a hitch. Whether it’s setting up equipment or making sure the grounds are secure, it all matters.”

When looking at the lasting impact of these volunteers, one thing becomes clear: the Greeley Stampede is not just an event but a tradition passed down through generations. The work the team puts in year after year is the foundation of that tradition. “It has been an honor to be a part of this for so long,” said Ron Wildeman. “I’ve seen this event grow, and I’m proud to be a part of something that brings so many people together.”

The shared motivation among the Greeley Stampede team stems from something greater than just event logistics—it’s the sense of purpose and legacy that drives them. Whether it’s the excitement of seeing the community come together or the pride in contributing to an event that has been part of Greeley’s culture for over a century, they return year after year because of the deeper satisfaction it provides.

“Being part of something this big, where we can create an experience that people look forward to, it’s rewarding every time,” says Justin Watada, underscoring the

James Herman, Old Bucker

“FOR ME, THIS EVENT IS A TIME TO help WITH SOMETHING THAT IS much greater THAN ME.”
- AARON LICHTENBERG

powerful impact this event has on both the volunteers and the community. The sense of pride these men carry isn’t just about the work; it’s about creating something that will endure for future generations.

As the Greeley Stampede prepares for its next chapter, the dedication and passion of volunteers and staff members will continue to guide the event’s evolution. Each year, they bring fresh ideas and perspectives, while also honoring the traditions that have made the Stampede such a significant part of the community. Everyone’s efforts ensure that the Stampede

will continue to thrive, with each person contributing in a way that enhances the overall experience. Their work leaves a lasting impact—not just on the event, but on the entire community.

It’s a powerful reminder of the value of volunteerism and how every hour spent working behind the scenes helps shape the culture of Northern Colorado. For anyone looking to join this incredible effort, whether through volunteering, committee work, or full-time involvement, the Greeley Stampede is always eager to welcome new faces. McIntire Roofing: Quality You Can Trust

Family-owned Service, Local Roots, and Unmatched Craftsmanship in Every Project

Dustin McIntire, Owner of McIntire Roofing.

McIntire Roofing started in Northern Colorado in May of 2013, with their first roof being mom and dad’s. Brothers Dustin and Dylan McIntire are Greeley-born and raised by Mark and Robin McIntire—their supporters from day one who instilled in them the values of hard work, respect, and honesty in the workplace. Today, they are a family-owned full-service residential and commercial roofing company. McIntire Roofing specializes in all roofing systems and offers full exterior services such as gutters, windows, siding, stucco, paint, and more. CONTINUED >

McIntire Roofing is committed to delivering top-quality roofing systems designed to exceed customer expectations.

Dustin worked for several nationally accredited roofing companies, tackling storm-related projects across the country. While he learned the business inside and out, something was always missing. After years of training, he realized the only way to offer the quality his customers deserved was by doing it under the family name with a carefully selected team of family and lifelong friends. As of spring 2025, 90% of the staff is or has been considered family for over 20 years.

Their dedicated service department is what sets McIntire Roofing apart. Unlike most companies where salespeople—or sometimes no one at all—manage crews while also trying to sell roofs, McIntire’s service team prioritizes communication, quality control, and customer care from start to finish by:

• Meeting the customer the morning of the job to review special notes and assignments promised by their roofing specialist

• Reviewing the work order with the crew to ensure said promises are kept

• Supervising for safety, cleanliness, vehicle parking, and craftsmanship

(L-R) Brothers Dylan (General Manager) and Dustin McIntire (Owner) of McIntire Roofing.
The McIntire Roofing crew is always ready to serve with a customer-first focus.
Family-owned and operated, McIntire Roofing.

• Making material runs for the crew chief to keep them on-site and maintain the chain of command and quality control

• Securing the ladder safely to the roof for the city inspector

• Servicing warranties, making repairs, and conducting inspections

• Keeping clear, consistent communication with the customer regarding crew arrival times and job progress

• Taking after photos to ensure the job is completed to McIntire standards and will pass permit inspection

McIntire Roofing operates on a strict customer-first, employee-second, profits-last mentality. They understand the importance of reputation and trust. Over the last 12 years, they’ve roofed the homes of thousands of happy customers while respecting neighbors, pets, and property. Their reviews and accolades reflect this. With offices in northern Colorado and Denver, they provide quick, reliable service—whether it’s a new roof, repair, exterior finish, inspection, or warranty issue.

With a dedication to charitable causes, McIntire Roofing donates $50 per roof to a charity of the customer’s choosing, including the American Cancer Society, Folds of Honor, Habitat for Humanity, and the Little Willows Foundation. Foundations Sports Nutrition

Fueling Greeley’s Health Journey One Goal at a Time

The story behind Foundations Sports Nutrition is deeply personal for co-owner, Kyle Krupansky. Once an overweight child with a love for sports, Kyle decided at 12 years old to change his health, losing 75 pounds in a single year and igniting a lifelong passion for fitness and nutrition.

“I decided at a young age that I was going to take control of my body and become the athlete I always thought I should be.” That transformation set the stage for Kyle to pursue a career dedicated to helping others achieve their own goals.

After earning his dietetic degree from Colorado State University, Kyle worked as the head nutrition coach at Max Muscle, where he gained valuable experience and sharpened his expertise. That experience sparked his passion to open his own store, and in January 2023, Foundations Sports Nutrition came to life.

Located at 965 59th Ave., Unit C in Greeley, Foundations Sports Nutrition is the passion project of co-owners Kyle Krupansky and Elizabeth Mock-Murphy. Kyle and Elizabeth, along with Elizabeth’s wife Allison, form the driving force behind the business. With Kyle’s background and years of hands-on experience in the supplement and coaching world, the trio brings a science-backed, results-driven, and personal approach to fitness and wellness.

In just over two years, the Foundations team has helped countless clients take control of their health, from losing weight and increasing energy to achieving lifelong goals. Some clients have competed in their first-ever physique competitions, while others have reclaimed daily joys. “We’ve seen customers who have regained mobility and been able to enjoy the simple things in life like playing with their kids or going on hikes,” Kyle shares.

For Kyle and Elizabeth, the most rewarding part of running Foundations Sports Nutrition is the opportunity to work directly with the people of Greeley. “We love what we do, and we love seeing people feel better and reach their goals,” says Kyle. “The Greeley community is friendly, motivated, and hard-working, so it’s an ideal place to build something meaningful.”

Of course, growing a small business comes with its challenges. Competing against the online marketplace of supplements was tough at first. However, Foundations Sports Nutrition delivers

individualized guidance based on science, experience, and genuine care—prioritizing education, transparency, and in-person connection is what truly sets them apart.

As customers began to experience real results and word-of-mouth spread, the business began to flourish. Watching that growth has been deeply fulfilling for Kyle; the store has evolved into a place where customers come not just for products, but for conversation, encouragement, and inspiration. “It’s a dream come true,” says Kyle. “We’ve created a space where health and nutrition are exciting, approachable, and social.”

By merging scientific rigor with heartfelt service, Foundations Sports Nutrition believes that health isn’t a solitary journey but a community endeavor.

For Kyle, Greeley is more than just a business location—it’s home. “What I appreciate most about Greeley is seeing so many people who want to enjoy the things they love and enjoy the place they live,” says Kyle. “It’s an extremely resilient community filled with down-to-earth people who truly love where they live.”

Foundations Sports Nutrition is proof that with passion, purpose, and community, possibilities are endless. Looking ahead, the team has big plans. They aim to expand their reach across Greeley by partnering with local businesses, sports teams, and schools. From community seminars to group nutrition challenges and product sampling events, they hope to bring the benefits of good nutrition to as many people as possible.

Priceless Memories

Advice Editorial: Gift Giving Inspiration For Dads

Retro Movie Night

Enjoy a movie night together with popcorn, candy and all the fixings. Home movies enable strolls down memory lane, or one of his favorite movies from his childhood makes for fun conversation. Ordering a projector for a large format screening makes the movie night feel extra theatrical.

Learn Together

Learning a new skill together, or sharing a favorite hobby, is a great way to bond. If Dad likes woodworking or fishing, finding a class to attend together goes beyond gifting tools and allows fun.

Blast From The Past

Brainstorm childhood memories together and enjoy a day reliving them. If he chaperoned a trip to the zoo, experience it again together. If short on time, stop at a favorite ice cream stand and tell him how much you cherish the memories.
