Hello 2025!
Dear Greeley Community,
I can hardly believe it—another new year is upon us! Happy New Year to you all! As we step into 2025, it’s the perfect moment to embrace fresh beginnings and explore the many opportunities our vibrant community offers to help us lead happier, healthier lives.
Greeley is truly rich in resources for wellness, and in this issue, we’re thrilled to spotlight some of our local gems: our community recreation centers and FunPlex, Balance Health, Marr Family Dentistry, Peake Wellness and OsteoStrong. Each of these local businesses plays a unique role in helping our residents thrive.
One particularly exciting development this year is the new medical school in the works at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC). My husband Craig and I had the privilege of attending the groundbreaking ceremony, and we were inspired by the passion and commitment of both community leaders and UNC’s visionaries. This institution will undoubtedly be a cornerstone of growth and opportunity, benefitting Greeley for generations to come.
As you read through this issue, I hope you’ll feel inspired to explore new paths to health and happiness for yourself and your family. Whether it’s trying a new activity, building stronger habits or connecting with local wellness resources, this year holds endless possibilities for all of us.
Here’s to a fresh start and a healthier, brighter year ahead.

"This new college is going to be a huge economic boost for our community" —UNC President Andy Feinstein

Big things are happening at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC), and they’re about to get even bigger. UNC is on track to open its very own College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fall 2026— an exciting addition to the campus that’s set to shape the future of healthcare in northern Colorado and beyond. Far more than just another institutional expansion, the College of Osteopathic Medicine marks a significant step forward for the university, the community and the region’s healthcare system at large.
This past September, UNC celebrated the groundbreaking of its new facility with spirited fanfare, marking a defining moment in the university’s history. As UNC President Andy Feinstein put it, “We’re answering a call to meet a workforce need, just as we did in 1889 when we opened our doors as a teacher’s college.”
UNC is stepping up to address the critical shortage of healthcare professionals, and it couldn’t come at a better time.
If you’ve lived in Colorado long enough, you know that rural areas often struggle to get the healthcare they so desperately require. According to the Health Resources and Services Administration, Colorado is facing a dangerous shortage of physicians, with nearly 60 out of 64 counties in the state designated as “healthcare shortage areas.” That’s where the new College of Osteopathic Medicine comes in to help.
Dr. Beth Longenecker, the founding dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine, knows firsthand how vital this need is. Growing up in a small town in Pennsylvania, her father was an osteopathic physician who made a real difference in the community.
“I’ve seen the need for physicians in rural areas,” Dr. Longenecker says. And that’s exactly why she’s so passionate about the work she’s doing at UNC. Hers is a drive laser-focused on training the doctors who will serve communities in need, especially in rural settings such as northern Colorado.
For UNC, launching a medical school is more than simply expanding the curriculum—it’s about building stronger, healthier communities. And with the opening of this new medical

LAUNCHING A MEDICAL SCHOOL IS MORE THAN SIMPLY EXPANDING THE CURRICULUM—IT’S ABOUT BUILDING STRONGER, HEALTHIER COMMUNITIES.
college, the university is positioning itself to play a fundamental role in the state’s healthcare future.
“This new college is going to be a huge economic boost for our community,” President Feinstein explains. “Not only will it help address a critical need, but it will bring jobs, opportunities and growth to Weld County.”
As the new medical school takes shape, it’s expected to generate around $500 million in economic impact for the
county over the next 20 years. That’s a lot of new vitality, a lot of new students and a whole lot of new possibilities for the entire region.
What makes this medical college so unique? For starters, it’s designed to be a place where students aren’t simply learning how to be doctors—they’re learning how to care for the whole person.
“We believe in the osteopathic philosophy, which recognizes the mind, body and spirit,” Dr. Longenecker says. “Our curriculum will focus on wellness, inclusivity and compassion, preparing students to be caring physicians who can truly make a difference in people’s lives.”
The program will also emphasize health equity, diversity and community engagement. “We’re training physicians who will be leaders in their communities,
advocates for social justice and champions of patient-centered care,” Dr. Longenecker added.
This vision is especially important in a state like Colorado, where both urban and rural communities are eclectic, with differing healthcare needs.
What’s enticing about this new project is how it brings people together. UNC has always had strong programs in health sciences, from nursing and public health to behavioral sciences. Now, all of those
disciplines will come together in new and innovative ways as students from various fields collaborate on solving real-world healthcare challenges.
“We’re going to create a culture of collaboration across the university,” Dr. Longenecker says. “That’s how we’ll build the best doctors and the best healthcare system.”
The College of Osteopathic Medicine will also go far beyond educating future doctors; it’s going to be a major hub for cross-disciplinary innovation, as well. Students will learn from each other— building stronger, more comprehensive healthcare solutions in the process. UNC is ensuring that its students are ready for the future of healthcare, with all its complexities and challenges.

What’s next for UNC and its new medical college? The university is on track to welcome the first class of students as early as Fall 2026, and while UNC is not yet able to recruit or enroll students, prospective students from across the country are reaching out to learn more about the college. With only 40 osteopathic medical colleges in the U.S. and only a handful at public universities, this new college is sure to attract top talent.
Dr. Longenecker, who has an extensive background in medical education and leadership, is excited to lead this new chapter. “We’re creating something that will last for generations,” Dr. Longenecker concludes. “This is just the beginning of something big, and I can’t wait to see how it transforms the future of healthcare.”
And, for all of us living in northern Colorado, the new facility is surely something to celebrate and explore once it’s officially open to the public. A brand-new medical school is coming to town, and it’s going to change everything—from the future of healthcare to the future of our local economy. So, here’s to the next generation of doctors, the next chapter for UNC and the bright future that lies ahead for all of us.

GREELEY’S getting fit at the FAMILY FUNPLEX
Kyle Wheeler, Greeley Rec’s Fitness Coordinator for the past three years, is ready, willing and more than able to help residents take their fitness seriously in 2025.
Yes, it’s that time again: when those ready and willing can head down to the nearly 20-year-old Greeley Family FunPlex (1501 65th Ave.), where they’ll find all the exercise equipment, workout space, fitness classes and recreational activities they need to start the year off right.
“First off, we have a new class: Belly Dancing,” Kyle says. “One of our new instructors, Jen Davis-Finley, brought it up to me, and at first, I didn’t even know if that was a ‘gym thing!’ But then I did some research, brought the idea to my supervisor, and the class will now be starting this month on Monday mornings at the [partner facility] Greeley Rec Center (651 10th Ave.).”
Also, after being unavailable for nearly a year, the highly popular Stability & Balance class returns to the FunPlex on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. This 45-minute class is designed for those wishing to improve posture, body alignment and core strength.

Personal Trainer Mena Mercer goes deep into her workout
Longtime cycling instructor Lanelle CobleMcEachron will also lead the new FunPlex class Cycle & Stretch—30 minutes of stationary cycling, followed by 15 minutes of stretch/mobility work—on Friday mornings.
“We’ve been working hard to renovate the facility itself recently, too,” Kyle cheers. The 2025 updates include remodeled and resurfaced flooring for the facility’s walking track and weight room, new doors for enhanced locker room privacy, two sleek, high-velocity fans to cool the indoor waterpark, and beautifully restored pool tiles, alongside thorough maintenance and deep cleaning throughout the entire building.
“The funding for all of this had been available for a little while, and we just decided it was time to enact some of these upgrades,” Kyle added. “And as Greeley continues to expand and evolve over time, we hope to as well!”
As for beginning-of-the-year tips on health consciousness from Kyle’s years of expertise and service, he suggests:
• Don’t be afraid of fruit! “Everyone is afraid of sugar, but fruit is not the same thing as donuts,” Kyle laughs. “Fruit is a great thing!”
• What’s the best exercise? “It’s whichever one you’ll actually do! If you love volleyball, play that. If you want to play Pickleball, do that. Whatever you do, find your barriers, then chip away at them.”
• Move some weight. “Even if it’s once a week,” some kind of “resistance training” (using weights or weighted objects for workouts) is better than nothing, Kyle advises. Or, as Kyle so eloquently puts it, “As long as you’re moving, you’re already lapping everyone else on the “couch.”
Exciting updates for 2025 include: new and returning fitness classes such as Beginning Belly Dance, Stability & Balance and Cycle & Stretch. The FunPlex also welcomes new instructors Jen Davis-Finley and Mena Mercer, while recent renovations enhance the facility with upgraded flooring and refurbished pool tiles. Since starting their business in 2007—during which time they ultimately settled in their current Greeley office at 1813 61st Ave. three years ago—Dr. Kevin Marr, wife Dr. Kami Marr and their highly seasoned team have made it their mission to provide personalized, compassionate dental care to local families.
“We met in dental school in Lincoln, Nebraska,” Kevin—a native Ohioan turned Nebraskan—fondly
recalls of his wife of 21 years, herself a longtime northern Coloradoan who went to high school at Greeley’s University High.
“Kevin was two years ahead of me in dental school,” Kami recounts. “He completed a residency and worked at a community clinic before I graduated, and then we both worked and lived in Minneapolis for four years.”

Dr. Kevin and Dr. Kami Marr
Though the up-and-coming dentists enjoyed their stint in Minneapolis, the pull back to what would become their collective home here in Greeley was strong, especially when an opportunity that Kami couldn’t turn down came along—one that would change both Kevin’s and her life forever.
“The fellow that I worked with—shadowing him as an intern in high school—was getting ready to
retire, called me up and asked when we were coming out to take over his business,” Kami laughs. Kevin was ready for a change himself, and off to Greeley they went, never looking back.
Kevin admits that he really didn’t know what he was going to do in his youth, even after he hit his undergraduate years. He did have a certain yen for science and craftsmanship. A guidance counselor
brought the two interests together with a revelatory piece of advice: “Have you ever thought about going into the dental field?”
Kami, on the other hand, can hardly remember a time when she wasn’t thinking about how she’d make her lifelong dream happen— including that fateful internship shadowing her future mentor, Dr. Jim Shaddock, during her time at University High.
“I always loved math and science, and my mom was a nurse,” Kami says. “I was introduced to the medical world through that,” she continued.
“I first considered medical school early in my life, but my mom was there to tell me the hours could be less than desirable. I had a lot of dental work growing up, so I can empathize with patients. I’ve also always been drawn to people’s smiles.”
When asked what it’s like to have gone to dental school together, to travel as journeymen practitioners and be partners in both life and business, Kevin beams brightly saying, “We don’t know any other way to do it. For us, this is what it has always been and always will be.” Kevin jokes, “Frankly, I think our two sons are getting kind of tired of hearing Mom and Dad talking about dentistry all of the time!”
Kami finds their dedication to dentistry equally joyful, noting that both she and Kevin have their own specialties—she prefers working with children and restorative dentistry, for example, and he enjoys cosmetic cases and smile design. As such, there’s a definite give-and-take in their shared business where each Marr complements the other in a way that has made both their marriage and office work so well.
CONTINUED >
“One thing I’ve found, not having been from Greeley, is that people here are really genuine,” Kevin observes. “There are very nice people here; generally, just good folks, overall.”
“Greeley has changed so much since I went to high school here,” Kami reflects. “It has become such a vibrant new place in a lot of ways. But it has been my home for so long, and I always knew, even with all of my moving around, that I’d come back. And now, here we are!”

FRESH FEEDBACK
Balance Health Now Offers Neurofeedback Sessions: But, What Does That Mean?
Jessica Travis and Jen Wenning celebrating 10 years of Balance Health
If you’ve ever felt like your brain is running on overdrive—distracted, anxious or just not quite performing as it should—you’re not alone. Enter neurofeedback therapy, the cutting-edge mental wellness treatment that’s gaining buzz for its ability to recalibrate your brain to function at its best. And now, thanks to the team at Greeleybased Balance Health, you can experience this transformative therapy in a comfortable oneon-one setting.
Founded in 2014 by Dr. Frank Morgan, Balance Health has long been a sanctuary for those who want personalized, holistic care without the pressures of the traditional medical system. At Balance Health, patient relationships are everything. That means no rushed appointments, no waiting rooms filled with strangers and no insurance red tape. Enter Family Nurse Practitioner Jen Wenning who joined the clinic almost three years ago after becoming frustrated with the rushed nature of mainstream healthcare.
Balance Health also provides a full gym and variety of individual and group workout sessions
Jessica Travis helps a patient set up for her feedback session
“We wanted something more intimate, where we could really help people on a deeper level,” Jen explains. “And that’s exactly what we’ve built here.”
With a passion for neurology and a love for natural healing, as well as a background as a Nurse Practitioner, Jessica Travis was drawn to Balance Health because of her interest in getting to the root cause of issues, as opposed to merely “managing illnesses.” And when she introduced her longtime neighbor and friend Jen to neurofeedback therapy, it was a perfect fit.
Neurofeedback, delivered in a non-linear format using NeurOptimals, cutting-edge technology, is a non-invasive, brain-training method that helps patients unlock mental clarity, reduce stress and improve overall mental and neurological health. Think of it as a spa day for your brain.
For ten 30-minute sessions (which can be scheduled according to a patient’s individual schedule), small sensors are gently placed on a patient’s scalp to monitor their brain’s activity. Real-time feedback by means of creating brief, almost imperceptible pauses

“What we’re doing is training your brain to let go of persistent, unhelpful patterns— whether that’s stress, anxiety or just mental fatigue,” Jessica clarifies. “It’s not about forcing change, but gently guiding your brain to work more effectively on its own.”

HOW DID YOU FIRST MAKE YOUR WAY TO GREELEY?
While at Brigham Young University, I met my future husband Ken Buss, a Greeley native. We didn’t want to stay in Utah, so we came out here in 1984 and have been here ever since.
HOW DID YOU ULTIMATELY END UP WORKING WITH DR. PEAKE?
For a little over ten years, I’d been teaching nursing, among a few other jobs, and I recently decided it was time to make a change. I had met Lexi [Dr. Alexia Peake] 15 years ago when we both worked nights in the North Colorado Medical Center emergency room. Though we hadn’t seen each other in a very long time, I saw her posting for a holistically-minded Nurse Practitioner (because that’s how she is and that’s how her patients are) back in September. I applied for the job, we met for an interview, she recognized me, and we hugged happily. Shortly after our meeting, I was hired!
OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS WORKING FOR DR. PEAKE, WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR MAIN CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE PRACTICE?
My favorite work is when I’m helping patients learn how to take care of themselves and their families better. I also really like helping people with chronic illnesses. I truly believe that the best way to help with issues like that is by educating patients on diet and lifestyle changes.

TERRI
AND DOUG ADEN'S OSTEOSTRONG IN GREELEY THRIVES WITH THE SUPPORT OF THEIR GROWING FAMILY
ARTICLE BY BETHANY WILEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIM DESMOND
OsteoStrong in Greeley is a place where clients may improve their overall health by strengthening the foundation of their bodies—the skeletal system. OsteoStrong’s expert methodology works for people of all ages, using a process known as Osteogenic Loading to promote skeletal strength, improve bone density, posture and balance, increase athletic performance and reduce joint and back pain.
Owners of OsteoStrong in Greeley, Doug and Terri Aden, first stumbled upon OsteoStrong in Lakewood, Colorado while seeking a remedy to help Terri with her own bone density issues. With the distance to Lakewood and the dislike of Denver traffic, the Adens felt as though they were being led to open an OsteoStrong location in Greeley.
In 1984, Doug and his parents started working together on their family ranch. After marrying Terri and raising five boys on the ranch, their sons, and now grandchildren, naturally have grown up in the family businesses. With Doug’s affinity for family-run businesses, their kids help in various capacities at OsteoStrong, from the initial demo work to the website, chalk wall and ad design.
OsteoStrong has allowed Doug and Terri to connect with many amazing people, and, as such, they are delighted to have each other and their kids to journey through life together. Doug is also grateful that OsteoStrong has made him feel younger again.
Doug and Terri extend the family atmosphere to the customers they serve. “We say to each person that joins, ‘Welcome to the OsteoStrong family,’ as we are going to spend time together each week improving your well-being and giving you the support and resources you need to do so,” concludes Doug.

Take YOU Out to the Ball Game!
Friends of Baseball, a Greeley-based non-profit organization dedicated to supporting youth baseball in northern Colorado, will host its highly anticipated Breakfast of Champions on Saturday, February 1st. This iconic event brings together baseball enthusiasts, legends and supporters, all united by their passion for the game.
“We started as a group of business people with an idea and a dream to help kids fulfill their baseball ambitions along with their parents,” says organization president Steve Baker.
Steve went on to explain that the main focus of Friends of Baseball was at first a simple one: to help kids who couldn’t afford to be in Little League or Greeley-Evans Youth League by supplementing expenses such as cleats, gloves, uniforms and large equipment such as pitching machines.
“We’ve since expanded in scope but remain all about doing what we can to get more players in the game,” Steve adds.
Since its inception in 1987, Friends of Baseball’s annual Breakfast of Champions has raised critical funds for local baseball programs, including high schools,

Past speakers have included such legends as Nolan Ryan, Tommy Lasorda and Darryl Strawberry, and the event continues to draw an impressive crowd of hundreds of baseball fans each year. “Over the years, we’ve started helping individuals and teams as far north as Cheyenne and as far south as Grand Junction,” says Friends of Baseball committee member Mark Welsh. “We’ve also recently heard about a special-needs league in Erie that we provided a sponsorship to this last year.”
General admission for Breakfast of Champions is $20 a ticket, and all proceeds benefit youth baseball in the community. Kids ten and under are free.

Cleaning House For 2025
STEAMWAY FLOOR TO CEILING'S KIM WEBER ON COMMUNITY CLEANLINESS AND WELL-BEING
Kim Weber really knows how to clean house.
As a second-generation manager and co-owner of Greeley’s long-running and dedicated Steamway Floor to Ceiling (602 8th Ave.), Kim can hardly remember a time when she wasn’t passionate about helping her fellow community members find more efficient and effective ways to give their homes and offices the clean sweep they so desperately require from time to time.
“My parents started the business 50 years ago,” Kim proudly states. “We just celebrated our 50th a few months ago, in fact. We are so grateful to Greeley for continuing to support an independent, local company like ours.”
Kim fondly recalls that many of her clients are now multi-generational, as well. For many families throughout the area, the sons and daughters—and in some cases, even grandchildren of former clients—are now tapping Steamway Floor to Ceiling for all of their house-cleaning and interior design needs.
“My mom and dad started all of this with just one truck, solely doing carpet cleaning,” Kim says. “They eventually partnered with an interior designer who has become like family, too, and we haven’t stopped expanding and finding more ways to innovate since.”
