When John isn’t out gallivanting abroad with sharks, he is in our beautiful valley helping people with their homes. Both on the inside and out.  John has been in the construction industry for over 25 years. He started off his career when he was 20 years old. He taught himself how to build cedar fences, then learned chain link and that led to learning more and more going onto landscaping and then remodels.

18

You may recognize John Stokes from our April issue (if you don’t though, you can go to citylifestyle.com/roaringfork ).

In 1997, he started building homes. He learned all the jobs involved with that and has been doing it ever since.  Mastering all of these skills, including customer service skills, has given John a really cool business model. He founded High Valley Enterprises to be centered on homeowner advocacy. John and his team have become well acquainted with 17 different insurance companies, “We sometimes spend more time with these insurance adjusters than our own families,” John continued, “We work with them so often that we have a good idea of what to expect from the agency right from the start. But we do go over the homeowner’s entire policy with the adjuster. Our job is to make sure the adjuster gets all the information the first time, but if they don’t, we are experts in supplementing those jobs and making sure the homeowner gets their maximum benefit.” When asked if homeowner advocacy is an extra cost for his services John said, “We don’t charge anything for the advocacy ser vice, we just ask that we get the work after insurance approves the work for theTheclaim.”   talents of John’s team are expan sive. From commercial roofing to foun dation repair, to getting rid of asbestos and fixing HVAC, and everything in between, “From dirt to roof,” John said, “we can do the work or coordinate to have it done, and we have a strict policy to get out to the homeowner within 24 hours and to have a bid to the home owner within 72 hours no matter how busy we are.”  When the team isn’t hard at work advocating for homeowners and fix ing their homes, you can find them at their offices in a farmhouse on 2042 F 3/4 road. That home is the original homestead in the Redlands built in 1953 and it is a venue for parties, avail able to rent on VRBO and a place to be among the horses, chickens, rabbits, and turtles. “The quality of life for the employees at High Valley Enterprises is really important to me, and we love to have clients over to sign contracts and hang out.” John loves his open-door policy and invites you to check out the homestead venue. You can contact John and his team at (970) 812-2222 with any questions you may have.

And now it can be topped with top coat! I love this design, it is intricately simple. As you can see in the picture- the sec ond accent nail is a design that uses similar slanted lines as step five, so it compliments it well. Have fun with it and make it your own! This is the perfect fall look. I hope you enjoy this pattern and if you would like to see more you can follow me on Instagram at the.nail.life.of.desi_g September is the month that we get excited about enter ing into fall! This is an excellent nail design that will lead us into the next season. While it may look intricate, it is simple when broken up into steps. The contrasting black and white nails really pull the look together in a stylish, gorgeous way. Three colors are needed: white, black, and your favorite fall color. (I am using "Give Me Pie!" by Madam Glam.) For each hand, the main accent nail will have a white background, the second accent nail will have a black background, and the other three nails will be the beautiful chosen color.  The main tools you need for the designs are a thin line brush and a dotting tool. That’s it! These are available on Amazon. Another implement that would be helpful is a little dish or folded tin foil to put polish on, so you can easily do nail art with the line brush. And of course, you’ll need basic manicure items. (This article will not go into details of each step of a manicure, but rather the steps of the design.) It is important to remember to let the polish dry, or be cured if it’s gel polish, in between each step.  DIY Trendy Fall Nails

Step one: on the nail that is painted white, use your line brush and paint a thin “H” across the nail (as pictured) using black polish.

Step three: create an “X” in the top half of the “H”, with the dot in the center. Repeat the same for the bottom half. The centered dots help the “X” be symmetrical!

HERE ARE THE STEPS FOR THE MAIN ACCENT NAIL:

Step four: In the top half of the “H”, paint a thin little floating line in each section of the “X” (which would make four lines total) going towards the center dot. Repeat the same for the bottom half of the “H”.

Step two: using a dotting tool, paint a dot on the line in the middle of the “H”, and then a dot centered in the top half of the “H”, as well as in the bottom half. Three dots total.

Step five: on each side of the “H”, paint little lines in a slanted, upward direction.

EDUCATION CORNER | TRAVEL University (CMU) and Grand Junction High School (GJHS), students could earn stronger college credit for taking these trips and recording their experiences in travel journals. CMU sent Dr. Oberle on this trip to back up its commitment to this partnership. This oneof-a-kind program is a true pioneering effort between the high school and CMU and one that is expected to be ongoing for a long time to come. She told me that her extensive travel, study and teaching abroad has shown her that the firsthand experience is so much better for lasting learning than the pages of a book."

Kenya by

This summer nearly 40 students, parents and GJHS fac ulty embarked on a trip to Kenya designed to provide a service-learning experience, new cultural interac tions, in-person experiences with the unique climate and ecology and for most, a once-in-a-lifetime photo safari in the African savanna. The trip was organized by GJHS French teacher, Sarah Henao who also owns SEI Travel Agency. Since 2010 Dr. Justin Whiteford, PhD has been taking educational trips with students and parent chaperones to places far and wide. He teaches a vari ety of Social Studies classes at GJHS. This year was no exception. Regarding the value of these experiences he said, "empirical knowledge - the in-person expe riences - are so much more beneficial for the learner than any other method of instruction." With a newly restructured partnership between Colorado Mesa Learning GJHS/CMUabroadStyle

"This was a short trip but I really can see things differently now.  I have a lot of work to do on myself and my priorities."

The Masai village was one stop along the way that students seemed to really enjoy and to "gel" with the locals as they got to know each other a little bit. One of the traditions among the Masai people is for young men to face each other and jump as high as possible in unison. Each jumper tried to outdo the other in height. It became a friendly way to challenge each other and the students seemed to really enjoy the Followingexperience.thevisit to the Masai Mara village the group took two different trips into national parks where they could pho tograph and watch a huge variety of wild life in their natural location.

Students and parents alike agree that this newly crafted partnership between CMU and GJHS brought an added ele ment of effective learning to the trip. Dr. Holly Oberle, professor of International Political Science shared insights from her many years living and teaching inter nationally. CMU president John Marshall enthusiastically supports these efforts.

"It's mind-blowing to visit the birth place of humanity. Our history in the USA is a few hundred years. Their history is hundreds and even thousands of years. for a student, that's a big difference."

26

EDUCATION CORNER | TRAVEL

"I don't think any student can fully appreciate being and American unless they see the world and have something to compare it to. I was so naive."

One student, Jameson Whiteford, said that his experience seeing these animals up close, in the wild was so much more fulfilling than seeing any of them in a zoo or wildlife documentary. He continued, "Seeing how people live out their lives in cement houses, dense population and working hard every day for everything they need just to live, was humbling. It made me appreciate much more, how good we have it in the USA. Few places on earth can begin to rival the biodiversity of this region of Africa.

Some of these students who were itching to go somewhere else for college are now excited to consider CMU as their next step after high school following their experi ences on this trip. Photos and stories still don't seem to adequately share the impact of this adventure on those who were there.

"After this, I realize I need to travel more....."Dr.Oberle shared a similar experience from a school trip to Spain in her under grad time at Knox College, where she too caught the "travel bug" and she's been learning through cultural experiences far and wide ever since.

"After visiting Africa, I see that we are more alike than different."

"I guess I don't appreciate the things I have. They have so little and yet value it so much."

As this partnership progresses it is anticipated that there may be some oppor tunities for select college students to join the GJHS trips and perhaps other CMU faculty. There may also be trips planned by CMU for their students to have these same kinds of experiences in international culture, biodiversity, geologic and geo graphic studies and to create their own memories to last a lifetime.

Professor Oberle shared some insights that parents and students found eye-opening. Sometimes these "cultural experiences" are a combination of pageantry and tourist entertainment that may give a diluted view of the culture being visited but overall this kind of experience is truly a great place to begin for high school students.

Regarding the cultural experience stu dents made the following statements in their"TheJournals:bestreason to visit Africa, the people. Their kindness and generosity put many Americans to shame. We have a lot to learn from them."

The first group to arrive in Kenya delivered about 150 pounds of books to a school and began having some interaction with locals to learn more about Kenyan culture and daily living. Once the full group was together

"Some of these families make less than a dollar a day but seen so happy. We as a nation seem distracted and disconnected from what makes people happy."

Standing at 19,340 ft. above sea level Kilimanjaro is the highest point on the African conti nent and stands as the largest free-standing mountain on earth. This trek starts at an elevation approximately 7,000 ft. and amounts to a round trip foot journey of roughly 50 miles.

Conquering Kilimanjaro 28

Some of our Grand Junction neighbors experienced the breathtaking views of more than 1,000 square miles that can bee seen from any direction at the summit of this highest point on the African continent.

In her own adventures, Sarah has climbed 40 of Colorado's 58 peaks surpass ing 14,000 feet in elevation. When invited to be part of this trip by Justin Whiteford she told him without hesitation, "I'm all in". Her Son Luke also made the trip and had to get some special arrangements to finish his year end college finals remotely or take the exams early in order to go.

Following the Kenya trip shown earlier in this issue, several students with their accompanying parents remained in Africa and after much preparation took on the challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

For most who make this climb, it's a oncein-a-lifetime experience! Included in the trip, one of our commu nity's strongest advocates for education, Sarah Shrader (founder and owner of Bonsai Design) and her son Luke. Sarah teamed up with Tim Foster (recent past president of CMU) to spearhead the cam paign to get an approving vote from our community to rebuild Grand Junction HS.

Mr. Whiteford assigned the following duties to the otherGroupadults:devotional coordinator (ministering), medical support, music and camp entertain ment, overall morale. Parents included in this group were Brian Burton (Burton Orthodontic), Derek Dean (Ruby Canyon Dental), Aaron Birch (Birch Dental) and Mark Griffin (Western Colorado Otolaryngologists). This group met over 20 times to prepare with equipment, travel planning and conditioning hikes to get ready for this excursion. At the summit, the entire group was in tears. Mr. Whiteford said this: "The lesson we taught our children was that the best things in life come through hard work sacrifice, and pull ing together for common goals. By working together, the entire party made the summit. What was a lofty vision 18 months before, taught our children that they can not only envision and achieve great things, but that with commitment and dedication, anything can be achieved. This type of program will continue at GJHS for a long while to come."

INSTRUCTIONS

4. Stir thoroughly just before serving. Summer is here and so are the smells, sights, and flavors of a home-grown harvest. As a kid, I loved going to see my grandparents. Usually that meant winter visits to Arizona and summer visits to Idaho. Both of my grandpas always had a well-trimmed vegetable garden full of delicious regional produce. I’ve always enjoyed sharing kitchen creations that come from a blend of memories and new inspirations. This salad idea grew from those memories, the creative ways those harvests were always prepared, and from my own plentiful harvest a few summers ago.  This recipe came from an evening at home with pork chops on the grill and fresh pomegranate lemonade. The vines had been filled with Roma tomatoes, cucum bers and there were bunches of fresh basil. Not long before, I had a wonderful mozzarella caprese salad served with a chicken dish at a restaurant. As I was thinking of how my grandfathers would have creatively used their own harvest, this one came together in a flash. That inspiration; Caprese and Grandpas’ gar dens, yielded a cool summer favorite.

1 pound fresh Roma tomatoes, diced in ½ inch chunks
