May

May is our Women's Issue. In recognition of Mother's Day we explore issues and ideas of interest to or about women.

But we want to take a moment to recognize that Glastonbury Lifestyle Magazine is celebrating its 5th Anniversary this month! Our launch issue was in May of 2020, a time when we were all still in the thick of the Covid pandemic. Somehow, despite all the setbacks and heartaches of that time we managed to launch Glastonbury Lifestyle and we have our advertising partners to thank for much of our success then and now. We have a story this month about what went into our creation and how some of our partners decided to take a leap of faith with us.

In keeping with our Women’s Issue we have a profile this month of Jessica Olander, President of the CT River Valley Chamber of Commerce. Jessica is a tireless and devoted booster for the nearly 600 businesses that make up the chamber, and she stresses that working collaboratively with everyone in the business district is the secret to the chamber's successes.

In our Healthy Lifestyle segment this month we spoke with several health and fitness experts from around the region — Dr. Melissa Morales of Positive Change Weight Loss, Peter Inserillo of Relentless Performance physical therapy, Christian Silva of GymGuys personal fitness and Julian Grant of FemCare MedSpa  — about the health issues that specifically impact women.

We spoke with Jenny Bergeron who owns Athene Wealth Management here in Glastonbury. In a financial industry historically dominated by men, Jenny is breaking barriers and redefining wealth management.

We profile another woman this month who owns her own business. Jurgita Eisenmann, founder of It's My Home Care LLC, provides home care services with a heavy dose of empathy and compassion.

We also have a story about the historic Town & County Club of Hartford, an organization for and catering to women that is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year, and a springtime salad recipe.

We hope you enjoy this month's issue of Glastonbury Lifestyle Magazine and that you have a Happy Mother's Day!

Town & County Club Celebrates 100 Years

A CENTURY OF CONNECTION & WOMEN

EMPOWERING WOMEN

Located in Hartford’s distinctive West End, the Town & County Club is more than just a gracious historic mansion; it’s a sanctuary where women gather, connect, and empower each other. As the Club celebrates its centennial this year, it remains a vibrant community that honors its past while boldly embracing the future.

This private, member-run women’s club has offered connection, enrichment, and empowerment since 1925. It was founded by some of Hartford’s most trailblazing advocates for women’s rights and began as a haven for women to gather outside the confines of their homes to exchange ideas freely and take action in the community.

“These women were visionaries,” said Club President Donna Finocchiaro. “They wanted a place to meet, to do good works, and to support each other, so they created it. We are proud to carry that spirit forward one hundred years later.”

The Club’s centennial celebrations reflect its dynamic spirit. Members recently marched in Hartford’s parade, echoing the suffragists who founded the Club. Other upcoming events include a Centennial Founders’ Day Silver Tea, a formal Centennial Gala, and an art exhibit showcasing student artwork.

“We wanted our centennial to honor our past and inspire the future,” Donna said. “It’s a celebration of who we are and who we continue to become.”

One of the Club’s most cherished programs is its non-traditional scholarship fund for women 25 or older attending college for the first time.

“This scholarship speaks to our deep understanding of women’s lives,” shared Ellin Smith, Club and Centennial Committee Member. “We’ve awarded over $350,000 to 142 women, and it’s not just the money that matters; it’s the confidence and encouragement these women gain from knowing we believe in them. For us, it’s a real source of pride.”

Through partnerships with local organizations such as Hands on Hartford and Loaves and Fishes, members volunteer their time and talents to support those in need.

“This is a place where passion projects become real,” Donna said. “One idea shared over coffee can grow into something beautiful that truly helps our community.”

The organization also oversees the Lyman Heritage Preservation Foundation, named in honor of the Lyman family who built the Woodland Street house in 1895. The foundation seeks to restore and preserve the house and grounds in its historic neighborhood, and to educate the community on the historic significance of the first private women’s city club in Connecticut to own a clubhouse.

Today, the Club’s mission, “to create an organized center for women’s work, thought, and action,” is reflected in every event, discussion, and community initiative. Its nearly 200 members, from young professionals to retirees, find inspiration in each other’s life experiences.

For Ellin, the Club is also about finding joy in life’s simple pleasures. “Some of my favorite moments are the informal conversations we share in the library,” she said. “It’s a cozy space, but more importantly, it’s a place where friends gather to lift each other up.”

That sense of camaraderie is the heart of the club. From monthly book groups to lively salons, every activity is designed by and for women.

The Club offers a retreat from the demands of everyday life.

“It’s a welcoming place where you can forge genuine friendships, enjoy enriching cultural activities, and find true confidants,” said club member Trina Williams

WOMEN’S HEALTH

OUR EXPERTS PROVIDE ADVICE ON THE UNIQUE HEALTH ISSUES WOMEN FACE

Women’s health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, yet it is often neglected due to the multitude of responsibilities women carry. We’ve gathered insights from four health experts to provide actionable advice for women of all ages.

Dr. Peter Inserillo, of Relentless Performance, training with a client
Photography by: Gwen O’Donnell

DR. PETER INSERILLO, RELENTLESS PERFORMANCE: THE IMPORTANCE OF RESISTANCE TRAINING

As we go through life, our bodies undergo both physical and mental changes that can impact health. Hormonal shifts can further accentuate these changes. While aging is a natural process, there are steps we can take to mitigate its effects. This is why regular resistance training is crucial for women. Resistance training involves exercises where muscles contract against an external force, such as weights, resistance bands, or body weight. It helps maintain muscle mass, which naturally declines with age, and improves overall body composition. Additionally, it stimulates bone formation, reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

Key Benefits of Resistance Training:

• Enhances Bone Health

• Builds Muscle Strength

• Boosts Metabolism

• Enhances Mental Well-being

• Promotes Cardiovascular Health

Whether you’re starting out or continuing your fitness journey, regular resistance training can make a positive impact on your overall well-being.

JULIAN GRANT, OWNER, FEMCARE MEDSPA: RECLAIMING INTIMATE WELLNESS

Women often accept changes in their bodies as inevitable, particularly as they age or experience childbirth. However, many of these changes are treatable. At FemCare MedSpa we provide solutions for women dealing with issues like incontinence, sexual wellness, and loss of tissue strength.

“Women’s health is a critical aspect of overall well-being.”

Through innovative treatments like radiofrequency and electrical muscle stimulation, women can rebuild tissue strength and restore sexual wellness.

“The most heartbreaking thing I hear is when a woman says she’s stopped being intimate because of issues with sexual wellness,” says a FemCare Nurse Practitioner at FemCare. “Then the most beautiful thing happens when she returns after treatment, looking younger somehow—not from our Botox or PDO threads—but from rediscovering a fundamental confidence.”

FemCare MedSpa specializes in intimate rejuvenation treatments, skin tightening, medical weight loss, and other wellness services. Women are reclaiming parts of their lives they thought were lost forever. Addressing sexual wellness isn’t vanity; it’s reclaiming your right to feel at home in your body. Recognizing that sexual wellness and physical health are intertwined is essential for a well-rounded wellness approach.

DR. MELISSA MORALES, POSITIVE CHANGE WEIGHT LOSS, FUELING MUSCLE FOR WEIGHT LOSS

As women age, muscle loss becomes a significant concern due to declining estrogen levels during perimenopause and menopause. Maintaining muscle mass is crucial for effective metabolism and overall health.

Increasing protein intake and incorporating strength training are essential steps in preserving muscle mass. Protein-rich foods like garbanzo beans, which are high in protein and fiber, can be easily added to daily meals.

Key Nutrition Tips:

• Eat a balanced diet with protein, carbohydrates, and fats.

• Focus on nutrient-dense foods like fruits and vegetables.

• Practice mindful eating by being present during meals to avoid overeating.

• Prioritize Protein Intake: Ensure sufficient daily protein consumption to support muscle growth and repair.

• Stay Hydrated: Drinking enough water is essential for overall health and metabolism.

Eating nutritiously rather than just eating less is key. Incorporating healthy snacks that combine protein, fats, and carbohydrates can increase satiety and boost energy levels. Healthy nutrition is a cornerstone of fitness and overall well-being.

CHRISTIAN SILVA, GYMGUYZ: OVERCOMING FITNESS STRUGGLES

Women face unique struggles when it comes to maintaining fitness routines, especially when balancing work, family, and personal well-being.

The three main challenges are consistency, weight training, and protein intake. Many women avoid weight training due to misconceptions about bulking up or simply due to lack of awareness. However, weight training improves bone health, metabolism, posture, and overall strength.

Additionally, protein intake is often inadequate, especially when women focus on fad diets rather than balanced nutrition. Protein supports muscle growth, boosts metabolism, and helps maintain energy levels throughout the day.

Creating a fitness routine that prioritizes weight training and proper nutrition is essential. Scheduling workouts, hiring a personal trainer, or exercising early in the morning can make a significant difference. Embracing a consistent fitness routine contributes significantly to overall well-being.

Jessica Olander: A Leader who listens

Her Commitment to the Connecticut River Valley Chamber Goes Above and Beyond

For Jessica Olander, serving as president of the Connecticut River Valley Chamber of Commerce has been a rewarding journey fueled by passion, collaboration and an unwavering commitment to local businesses.

With a background in association management and government relations, Olander discovered her calling through membership engagement and educational programming — and 25 years later, she still thrives in this field.

“I didn’t know what I wanted to do after college,” Jessica says. “But I fell in love with membership and education, and I’ve never looked back.”

Before stepping into her current role, Jessica worked for a large association management firm representing 65 lobbying clients. Her involvement in housing and small business issues cemented her deep understanding of the challenges facing entrepreneurs and larger organizations alike.

“Joining the Chamber was the best decision I’ve ever made. I’ve been here for four years now, and I love every minute of it.”

The Chamber serves over 565 businesses across East Hartford, Marlborough, Glastonbury and Hebron. With such a diverse membership, Jessica believes the key to success is listening closely to members’ needs and responding with meaningful solutions.

“Our Board is just as passionate as I am about making a difference, and we work hard to deliver what our members want.”

Collaboration is central to her leadership style. She actively partners with other organizations to identify and create benefits for the Chamber’s membership. Whether it’s tackling legislative concerns or supporting entrepreneurs, Jessica and her team focus on delivering value.

One of the Chamber’s signature events is the annual Apple Harvest and Music Festival. Despite the complexities of managing logistics like trash, tents and toilets, Jessica has consistently expanded and improved the event with the help of volunteers who chair the festival.

“For this year’s 50th anniversary, we’re adding four stages with 50 bands,” Jessica said. “It’s going to be incredible. We try to do something new every year to keep it exciting.”

The festival’ has become a signature event locally and in the state.

Marketing plays a significant role in the Chamber’s success, and Jessica credits engaged members who actively promote events and initiatives.

“Our strong social media presence helps us connect with people in the moment,” she said. “Listening, hearing what people want and responding is key.”

She encourages her ambassadors to act as “boots on the ground,” introducing themselves to new members and building relationships. She emphasizes the importance of educating members about Chamber benefits and helping them find opportunities to promote their businesses.

“It’s about empowering them to toot their own horn.”

She is especially proud of her efforts to improve the Apple Harvest Festival while maintaining its rich tradition. Her work recently earned her the 2025 Women in Business Award from the Hartford Business Journal, an honor that holds special meaning.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to be recognized for the work we’re doing. It validates that people believe in what we’re building.”

She balances all that while remaining deeply committed to her family. Her husband, Thomas, a general in the U.S. Air Force, and their children — Sophie, and Sydney — provide her with invaluable support.

“I used to travel two out of four weeks for conferences, and it burned me out. The flexibility I have now to work from home and create my own schedule has been life-changing.”

With a dedicated team, an engaged membership, and a focus on innovation, Jessica remains committed to ensuring the Connecticut River Valley Chamber thrives.

“This role has been the perfect fit for me. I feel incredibly fortunate to be doing what I love every day.”

LAUNCHED DURING THE PANDEMIC OF 2020, THE MAGAZINE FILLED A LOCAL NEED FOR A HIGH-END PERIODICAL

Glastonbury Lifestyle Magazine Celebrates its 5th Anniversary

Gary Perrelli, publisher, Glastonbury

Lifestyle Magazine

After years in corporate America I discovered City Lifestyle’s magazines in 2019. It was a perfect match for me and it gave me a chance to give back to Glastonbury, where we raised our family and have long called home.

In January, 2020 we started selling advertising and the businesses were very receptive. I remember meeting with Dr Mantikas, Bob & Adam at Awning Place and Emmy Lou at Emmy Lou’s LTD, all Charter Members and still with us today. We had a May launch date, but in March Covid hit. Somehow, we managed to survive. Clients were so appreciative and they came back in full force when Covid subsided.

We asked some of them to share their stories of how they took a chance on a new venture during a pandemic.

Cotton Hollow Kitchen, Mark and Joanne Conley

Cotton Hollow Kitchen opened in October of 2019 and quickly became popular. Within months Covid hit, forcing us to close and ushering in a period of uncertainty and challenges for us.

The pandemic put us in limbo and the financial strain was immense. The fear of permanent closure loomed large. We reached out to the Glastonbury community for support. The response from people was nothing short of remarkable. Many stepped up in various ways to ensure Cotton Hollow Kitchen’s survival. Gift cards became a lifeline, with many customers buying them. One anonymous donor purchased $15,000 worth. Cash donations flowed in as well, showcasing the generosity of the community, which also supported us by ordering takeout.

The support was a testament to the strong bond between Cotton Hollow and its patrons. The restaurant also enjoyed a strong partnership with Glastonbury Lifestyle Magazine over the past five years. Throughout the pandemic, we supported each other, with the magazine showcasing Cotton Hollow and providing ad placements and event announcements, providing much-needed visibility.

Dr. George Mantikas, DDS

The pandemic had a profound impact on our dental practice, presenting both challenges and opportunities. It forced us to temporarily close. We had to adapt quickly, shifting to emergency-only visits and virtual consultations, and staying connected with patients through phone calls and emails.

It also prompted us to rethink our approach to infection control. We implemented enhanced sanitation procedures and invested in additional protective equipment.

On a personal level, the experience underscored the importance of flexibility and resilience in the face of unforeseen challenges. It also highlighted the strength of our patient relationships and the community’s trust. We formed our relationship with Glastonbury Lifestyle Magazine, and found a wonderful way to stay connected to our community!

The Awning Place, Adam Beaulieu

Luckily for us, the pandemic had little effect because as a home improvement contractor we were deemed essential and could remain open. That wasn’t just a good thing for us, but for our customers as well. So many people were trying to find ways to enjoy the outside that we were getting lots of calls for awning installations. It was our pleasure providing cool comfort for so many people working from home. Not only did we make their outdoor living space more enjoyable and comfortable, but also more energy efficient. We also found that it was a good time to try a new advertising partner in Glastonbury Lifestyle Magazine. We thought the publication’s upscale look and feel was a good match for the high-quality products we wanted to showcase.

Looking back at the time of Covid and five years later -  it was a time of confusion, a time of the unknown, a time of challenge, a time of working remotely and a high degree of confinement. The opportunity to talk with Gary and get familiar with Glastonbury Lifestyle magazine was a chance to escape that confinement feeling and be a part of something new and exciting for the Glastonbury community. Time certainly does fly and we are very happy to be celebrating this anniversary with Glastonbury Lifestyle Magazine and all those who make the publication possible.

In May of 2020, we were working remotely and Teri Schrader, our head of school, repeatedly said it felt like we were flying a plane at the same time we were trying to build it. While our classes were being held on Zoom, we were trying to plan a virtual graduation for our 2020 seniors, having daily meetings on the then-ever-evolving health norms, and working diligently to determine the best ways to support our international students who were so far from home. With all this going on, Watkinson’s full faculty was also collaborating to create a plan to get our kids back on campus in the fall. In the midst of this, I got an email from Gary saying that he was creating a magazine that will tell the stories of its clients in the manner they wish, genuinely and with authenticity. During a time when we all were so isolated, it felt like a lifeline. Watkinson has been a partner ever since.

Watkinson School

Renbrook School, Barb Doyle

When Renbrook School closed in March of 2020, we never imagined our students wouldn’t return in-person until late August. It was an incredibly challenging period for educators and administrators alike. Our primary focus was the well-being of our students, and we dedicated countless hours to creating a plan that would keep them engaged, connected, and learning in the face of such uncertainty. In April, we began the transition to online learning, with tailored protocols for each grade level. Throughout the summer, our administrators worked tirelessly to design a safe and structured return to school that would uphold our mission. We were fortunate to partner with Glastonbury Lifestyle, who provided us with a platform to share our commitment to placing students at the center of their learning, no matter the challenges we faced. Renbrook School continues to serve Glastonbury families with quality education that meets the needs of their children, educating and inspiring them to develop the character, knowledge, and creativity to lead in an increasingly global and inclusive world.

Savol Pools, Ken Camello

When the pandemic hit, we knew then that folks were going to be staying put and their backyard was going to be their oasis. We knew that anyone that had a pool was now going to be spending a lot more time in and around it! We were looking for a high-end image type of advertising vehicle for our market areas. Once we saw Gary’s mock up and what he was going to be starting and where it was going to be distributed, we knew we had our advertising taken care of. It was perfect timing for us and Glastonbury Lifestyle Magazine. I look forward to reading every edition and they sit on my conference table in my office for others to read.

Students at Renbrook School
Ken Camello, president of Savol Pools

State Farm, Coe Bancroft

The pandemic of 2020 brought numerous disruptions and changes to our lives Isolating from friends, neighbors, and coworkers was often a stressful and lonely experience. As a State Farm Agent, I wanted to support my customers’ and employees’ health and avoid spreading COVID-19 as best I could, so I had most of my Team initially working remotely. A good part of my State Farm Agency’s growth is attributable to the technology supporting both remote work and virtual meetings with customers. We have appreciated advertising in Glastonbury Lifestyle Magazine to continue to get the word out that we continued to be open to helping people in our community with their insurance and financial services needs. More recently, the post-pandemic price shocks that all insurance companies are passing to their customers has brought many new people my way looking for more affordable insurance options for their personal and business needs.

JWM Architects, John McFarlane

Reflecting back on 2020, it’s hard to believe how much has changed in those five years. At JWM Architects, that time was filled with no small amount of uncertainty, yet also adaptation and determination. The pandemic forced us to rethink not only how we worked but also how we connected with our community. It was during that time that Glastonbury Lifestyle Magazine launched—a bold move during unpredictable times. We saw an opportunity to be part of something new, in a familiar media format that could help us forge new contacts when everything felt so distant. Looking back, that time taught us the importance of adaptability and community relationships. We’re grateful for the role Glastonbury Lifestyle has played in fostering local connections, and we look forward to celebrating many more anniversaries together. Congratulations on five incredible years!

Emmy Lou's: Emmy Lou DeBari

When Gary came to my shop and told he was creating a new monthly town magazine I was skeptical. However, after he explained his objective and enthusiasm about the town I was excited. I committed and directly following Covid hit. Well, five years later I’m so glad I continue to be a part of this fine monthly publication. It has great local coverage, local stories and much more.

CARING BEYOND LIMITS: JURGITA EISENMANN’S JOURNEY TO REDEFINE HOME CARE

Jurgita Eisenmann, founder of It’s My Home Care LLC, never imagined that her journey from working in a bridal salon to becoming a leading figure in the home care industry would inspire so many.

“Around 20 years ago, I was working in a bridal salon, taking college classes and working two caregiving jobs,” she recalls. “The salon was being sold, and the caregiving agency needed office help. I started as a scheduler, coordinating about 80 or 90 clients with that many caregivers.”

Her dedication saw her promoted to office manager, overseeing 500 clients and 350 caregivers. But the demanding schedule left her exhausted.

Her husband encouraged her to strike out on her own.

“One day, I looked around, took a deep breath, and walked out to my freedom. Now we celebrate every Aug. 27 as my Independence Day and the birthday of It’s My Home Care.”

“We conduct in-home meetings to assess needs and match clients with caregivers who suit their personalities.”
Jurgita Eisenmann with caregiver Dima Matusevichr.

Her business model is built on empathy, quality and trust.

“The business of caregiving requires a lot of flexibility. Clients often face losing their independence, and the thought of leaving their beloved home is terrifying. When they realize they can stay home with assistance, their gratitude is immeasurable.”

Unlike many caregiving agencies that prioritize growth and profits, Eisenmann focuses on quality.

“My rates are a little higher because I pay my caregivers well, thoroughly screen them, and carefully match them with clients.” This commitment ensures clients receive exceptional care and caregivers feel valued.

She likens her approach to choosing quality over cost. “Some people prioritize saving money, while others invest in quality. We provide unparalleled service, and our caregivers are the best in the industry.”

Home care is a challenging field due to high client turnover from changing health needs. “These challenges require dedicated management and a constant desire to provide the best care. I built my agency on over 20 years of experience.”

It’s My Home Care offers a range of services from part-time assistance to full-time live-in care. They also participate in the Adult Family Living program, enabling families to care for elderly loved ones at home with financial support from Medicaid.

Jurgita emphasizes that each client is unique. “Every client has different needs—some may need help with groceries or showering, while others need full-time care. We conduct in-home meetings to assess needs and match clients with caregivers who suit their personalities.”

Her philosophy is rooted in respect and understanding. “If you have to twist someone’s arm to accept care, it’s not the right time. I let families come to me when they’re ready and adjust our services accordingly.”

With a focus on individualized care, Eisenmann ensures that every client feels respected, safe, and well-cared for. It’s My Home Care continues to set the standard in home care services, proving that quality care is not just a service but a commitment.

EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH FINANCIAL WISDOM:

Athene Wealth Management

ARTICLE BY BRIAN BOYER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LYNN DAMON
There’s a push to bring more women into the industry, and for good reason.

In a financial industry historically dominated by men, Jenny Bergeron is breaking barriers and redefining wealth management through her firm, Athene Wealth Management. With a mission centered on education, empowerment, and strategic financial planning, Jenny is transforming how women engage with their financial futures.

Her journey into finance wasn’t a conventional one. Initially working in advertising, she found herself deeply interested in personal finance.

“I used to tell my husband that I’d love to just manage our money because it fascinated me,” she recalls. That curiosity soon became an opportunity when a financial advisor noticed her entrepreneurial spirit and encouraged her to enter the industry.

However, her transition into wealth management exposed her to a rigid industry structure that often prioritized sales quotas over personalized, strategic financial planning. This realization led to a bold move—starting her own firm, Athene Wealth.

“I didn’t want to push products just for the sake of hitting sales targets,” Jenny explains. “I wanted to create a firm where clients’ financial goals and well-being came first, not just their investments.”

As a woman in finance, she has encountered her share of challenges, but she also sees her gender as an asset.

“Women tend to approach financial planning holistically,” she explains. “We consider the entire picture— family dynamics, emotions, long-term goals—before making investment decisions. Women also often carry the mental load of managing the household, social calendars, and caregiving responsibilities,” she says. “Learning to delegate—both at home and in business— has been liberating.”

One of her approaches is her emphasis on financial counseling along with investment management.

“The real work isn’t about growing assets—it’s about helping people understand what kind of wealth they

need to create for their unique lives,” she says. Athene Wealth works toward ensuring clients have a solid grasp of their financial landscapes.

One of Athene Wealth’s core missions is to educate women about their finances.

“I’ve worked with too many women who, after a divorce or the loss of a spouse, realize they have no idea where their money is or how it’s managed,” Jenny says.

Her advice? Start simple: know what comes in and what goes out; understand where your money is invested; stay involved in major financial decisions— like purchasing a home or planning for retirement. “You don’t have to be an expert,” she reassures. “But knowing enough to be confident is key.”

She remains committed to providing high-touch, personalized service. She envisions a practice that allows her to deeply engage with clients and their evolving needs. “I don’t want to manage people’s ethics—I want to do the work,” she says. “That’s what I love, and that’s what sets us apart.”

She sees a growing need for more women in finance. “We bring a different perspective—one that prioritizes education, empathy, and comprehensive planning.”

Her message to women hesitant about investing or managing their finances?  “You can do it. Find someone who asks about you—your fears, your goals, your values. That’s the first step to financial empowerment. Don’t worry about how much you have or don’t have. Just start somewhere.”
