Since 2004, over 150 children in grades K-12 with intellectual, emotional or physical disabilities have developed their soccer skills in a safe, fun and supportive environment with TOPSoccer: The Outreach Program for Soccer, a national program offered through local clubs.
The group recently celebrated its 20th anniversary at Rotary Fields. Past participants and mentors were invited to take part.
TOPSoccer brings together players and peer mentors who serve as buddies and have numbered more than 400 since the program’s inception. These special athletes play at levels consistent with their skills.
Founded by Marty and Jen Carroll as part of the town’s Hartwell Soccer Club, the program is now run by Coach Justin Kelleher.
“TOPS is a unique opportunity for kids of all backgrounds, abilities, and experiences to come together, have fun, and be active,” he says. “It is also an opportunity for families to connect, share, and support each other. Players, peer mentors, and families have all made lifetime friends through the program and we all look
forward to TOPS Saturday afternoons each fall and spring!”
Players’ parents also have the opportunity to meet and share their unique yet similar experiences.
“TOPSoccer has given our daughter Nicole and our family the opportunity to establish meaningful connections with other special needs families, children and volunteers,” said Katherine Sisa-Lamb. “It is an outlet where our daughter participates at her own pace, and where she is encouraged by her friends, adults and peer mentors.
“It’s such an amazing program,” adds Mike DeFosses, the father of twin players. “It brings all kinds of kids together and gets them outside with peer mentors, and allows the parents to be able to meet each other and connect.”
“It’s fun meeting new people.” says his son Jake. His brother, Tyler, is more specific: “I like kicking the ball, playing Duck, Duck, Goose, and the popsicles,” he says.

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com

Glastonbury has a new gathering spot. Social Lounge, which opened in June in Somerset Square, is a cozy, intimate bar with a unique charm that sets it apart in the town’s social scene.
It was founded by Marc Alderucci, a seasoned bar owner with over 20 years’ experience and who grew up in Glastonbury. Social Lounge, Marc believes, fills a niche here in town: A place that stays open late enough for those who want to gather with friends or coworkers later in the evening.
“Everything shuts down too early here and there wasn’t a true late-night spot to grab a drink or unwind,” says Christa Fitzgerald, Social Lounge’s general manager.
Unlike larger venues, Social Lounge offers an intimate setting with a capacity of around 60 people. It’s not just about size, though—it’s about the vibe. The lounge has a relaxed, chill atmosphere that invites you to sit back and stay awhile. With a cozy patio, a couch, and soft lighting, it’s the perfect place to settle in for a few hours with friends, or even solo, Christa says.
“The menu is just as inviting as the bar's space, featuring small plates, flatbreads, and homemade meatballs—all comfort foods that complement their selection of tap beers, wines, and specialty cocktails.”
“If you want to come in and relax, we’re going to let you do your thing.”
The Social Lounge is open seven days a week, and their hours cater to the late-night crowd. From Sunday to Thursday, they’re open until 1 a.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays, they stay open until 2 a.m. For those who work late or just prefer to unwind later in the evening, the lounge offers a welcoming haven with happy hours from 3-6 p.m. and again from 10 p.m. to midnight.
The menu is just as inviting as the bar’s space, featuring small plates, flatbreads, and homemade meatballs—all comfort foods that complement their selection of tap beers, wines, and specialty cocktails. On Fridays and Saturdays, a DJ spins tunes that match the laid-back mood, adjusting the music to the crowd’s vibe. Whether you’re hosting a private party or just spending an evening out, the atmosphere feels like home.
Marc’s vision was to create a space where people could connect, unwind, and feel like part of a community and Social Lounge lives up to its name—everyone is encouraged to interact, making the place feel more like the TV bar Cheers, where everyone knows your name. It’s not just a place to grab a drink; it’s a place to stay, socialize, and feel good.

“We’re fostering long-term relationships that often extend through generations.”
With 115 years of experience, Cummings & Lockwood LLC has established itself as a leading law firm, one particularly adept at trust and estate planning and handling the sophisticated legal needs of its affluent clients, their families, family offices, businesses and charitable entities.
The firm’s Private Clients Group offers a full spectrum of legal services, from strategies to ensure that assets pass as intended in a tax-efficient manner to succession planning for closely-held businesses. Despite the complex nature of trust, estate, gift and income tax laws, Cummings & Lockwood maintains a simple philosophy: preserve and enhance the financial well-being and quality of life for individuals interested in safeguarding their future.
Caroline Demirs Calio, a Principal in the Private Clients Group, has spent considerable time helping families and business owners navigate the intricacies of estate tax and asset protection planning.
“We’re fostering long-term relationships that often extend through generations,” she explains. “We work with clients to navigate changing tax landscapes and to protect their resources through thoughtful planning.” Caroline emphasizes the firm’s multifaceted approach: from guiding young families in appointing guardians for their children to advising seasoned entrepreneurs on sophisticated asset protection and business succession planning strategies. She affirms that trust and estate planning isn’t solely about managing the transfer of substantial wealth; it’s also about making strategic decisions to ensure that clients’ assets are handled according to their wishes, regardless of size and value.
Marc Finer, another Principal and an integral Cummings & Lockwood team member, brings his unique blend of skills that bridge income tax planning and business law. He also highlights the firm’s all-encompassing, proactive approach.
“Many clients come to us for estate planning and discover we can assist with much more, from real estate deals to complex business transactions.” This integrated approach ensures that clients receive comprehensive solutions tailored to their unique needs. “We help clients ask the right questions, often ones they haven’t considered. This way, they’re not just planning for the future; they’re actively shaping it,” Marc shares. This involves a detailed understanding of each client’s immediate family, business dynamics, and long-term aspirations.
Beyond tax and business planning, Cummings & Lockwood also advises its clients on various charitable giving strategies. Many clients wish to leave behind a philanthropic legacy, beyond their immediate family, which involves making charitable contributions or setting up various charitable trusts or foundations. The firm assists in structuring these gifts to maximize the benefits delivered to both the donor and the charity.
Cummings & Lockwood’s approach to every client matter reflects the spirit of community and a commitment to delivering highly personalized client service. “We consider our clients as part of our extended family. We’re here to protect their interests and ensure their legacy thrives,” Caroline adds passionately.
Client relationships are at the heart of Cummings & Lockwood’s practice. Firm attorneys stress the importance of personally understanding their clients’ specific needs. “We see our role as not just advisors but partners in our clients’ long-term journeys,” says Caroline.
The firm’s legal practice is built on a foundation of trust and mutual respect, ensuring that each client feels heard, understood and valued. “It’s about more than just legal outcomes,” Marc notes. “It’s about ensuring our clients are prepared for the future, protecting what matters most to them.”
For residents of West Hartford, Glastonbury, and beyond, Cummings & Lockwood represents more than a law firm; it is a lifelong partner in navigating the complicated legal landscape. “We endeavor to provide our private clients with industry-leading
knowledge and expertise; sophisticated, client focused strategies; stability and continuity for multi-generational families and their businesses; and an exceptional client experience,” states Heather J. Rhoades, Chair of the firm’s Private Clients Group. By blending sophisticated legal strategies with an exceptional personal touch, the firm ensures that clients’ legacies are protected and their wishes are honored, making the complexities of estate and business planning more navigable and less daunting.
