As an Arizona native, born in Mesa and raised in the heart of Chandler and Gilbert, I’ve always felt a deep connection to the Wild West spirit that runs through this beautiful state. Growing up here meant summers under wide desert skies, riding bikes through neighborhoods that still had traces of farmland, and learning early on how much history is woven into the fabric of every Arizona town. Even now, as an adult, I’m still explor ing and still in awe of just how much there is to discover across this place I call home.
That’s part of what makes working on this issue such a joy. For our July publication, we leaned into those things that make Arizona feel iconic in summer: cowboy culture, legendary rodeos, refreshing getaways, and of course, plenty of good food and drink to savor with family and friends.
This month, we’re featuring the Prescott Rodeo, officially known as the World’s Oldest Rodeo, a must-see event packed with tradition, grit, and excitement. Pro tip: if you’re heading up, don’t plan on going just a few days before because traffic and crowds will be at their peak. Plan your trip in advance, book accommodations early, and give yourself plenty of time to get there smoothly so you can focus on the fun, not the stress.
We’ve also included a getaway guide for a one-day escape, perfect for those craving a little break without venturing too far. And since summer wouldn’t be complete without a good cocktail or two, we’ve rounded up some fun seasonal recipes to help you cool off in style. For a classic touch, we couldn’t resist sharing an apple pie recipe because nothing feels more Fourth of July than gathering with loved ones, enjoying fireworks, and making simple summer memories together.
Fourth of July has always been one of my favorite holidays. It brings back memories of family time, good food, and watching the night sky light up in celebration. That same sense of joy and connection is what we’ve tried to capture in this issue.
Here’s to honoring the past, enjoying the present, and making the most of every Arizona summer moment. Happy 4th of July and happy reading!

Rancho de los Caballeros is the Western Escape You Didn’t Know You Needed (Until Now)
ARTICLE BY KRISTA CARPENTER-BEASLEY
If you’ve ever dreamed of riding off into the sunset—or at least pretending you’re in a classic Western with modern amenities—this is your sign to pack your boots and hit the road.
Just over an hour from Gilbert, Rancho de los Caballeros in Wickenburg, Arizona is the ultimate dude ranch-meets-luxury-resort experience. It’s where cowboy dreams, spa days, and desert sunsets come together in the best way possible. And the best part? It’s closer than you think, but feels worlds away.
Rancho de los Caballeros has been welcoming guests since 1948, and while it still holds onto that authentic Old West charm, it’s currently going through a next-level makeover. Picture new rooms with cozy beds, modern finishes, and windows that frame those stunning Arizona views just right.
And they’re not stopping there—this summer, they’ll unveil two new pools (yes, poolside lounging is 100% encouraged) and 18 luxe villas for a more elevated escape. It’s the kind of renovation that keeps the soul of the ranch while dialing up the indulgence.
This isn’t just a pretty place to stay—it’s a choose-your-own-adventure kind of trip. Love horses? There are miles of trails to explore with guided rides. Into golf? Their 18-hole course is one of Arizona’s best-kept secrets. Want to try skeet shooting or explore the desert by jeep? Yep, they’ve got that too.
And for those of us who like our wild west with a side of pampering, there’s a full-service spa and chef-driven dining—including the ranch’s new 19 Restaurant, where you can sip something cold while watching the sun dip below the Bradshaw Mountains.
Rancho de los Caballeros is kid-approved. Their long-running Caballeros Kids Program keeps little ones busy with riding, crafts, and outdoor adventures while you sneak off for some “me time.” Everyone wins. Short drive. Big adventure. Endless sky. Whether you’re looking for a romantic weekend, a family-friendly getaway, or just a reason to wear a cowboy hat without judgment, Rancho de los Caballeros has your name on it. Book your stay and start chasing those cowboy dreams—spa robe optional.

Four incredible Arizona bands that'll completely transform your weekend playlist and concert bucket list
Ever fantasized about being a rock god for a night? The Instant Classics are here to make that dream ridiculously real! These Arizona legends have been turning ordinary humans into stage-strutting superstars since 2005, and honestly, it’s become an addiction for Phoenix nightlife.
The main attraction? Their legendary “Live Band Karaoke” shows. Forget those cheesy backing tracks – we’re talking a full professional band, backup singers, and YOU commanding center stage. With 300+ songs in their arsenal, you can go from crooning Sinatra to screaming AC/DC faster than you can say “encore!” Three minutes of pure, unadulterated rock star bliss where everyone in the room thinks you’re the next big thing.
Their regular gigs at Copper Blues downtown and Blue Martini are basically Phoenix’s worst-kept secret. Friday nights at Copper Blues? Pure magic. People literally stalk this band from venue to venue because once you experience that rush of belting out your favorite song with a live band behind you, regular karaoke feels like watching paint dry.
Sure, they rock weddings too (over 300 and counting), but their public shows are where inhibitions go to die and legends are born. This isn’t just entertainment – it’s therapy, confidence-building, and the ultimate Friday night flex all rolled into one sweaty, exhilarating experience!
Sometimes the best things come from the worst times, and Ponderosa Grove is living proof! This Prescott powerhouse duo turned 2020’s pandemic chaos into pure creative gold, writing 10 out of 11 songs on their debut album during lockdown. Talk about productivity goals!
Led by vocalist Candace Devine (who’s backed Christina Aguilera, NBD) and guitarist Drew Hall (Prescott’s musical Swiss Army knife), they create what Drew calls “multi-leveled” sound – think Americana with serious R&B soul vibes. Their hustle paid off big time when they crushed the Louisiana Music Prize competition in 2021, beating thousands of bands for that sweet $10,000 grand prize.
Still riding high from their latest 2024 single “A Bird Can’t Fly” and regular shows across the Valley, this band keeps proving that Arizona’s music scene is absolutely unstoppable! Their breakout hit “Changin’” literally started as a rearview mirror pep talk – because sometimes the most honest moments make the best songs.
ROGER CLYNE & THE PEACEMAKERS COLLABORATION WITH THE BLACK MOODS:
Arizona rock royalty Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers have become the coolest mentors ever, taking Tempe’s blazing power trio The Black Moods under their wing and absolutely changing the game for both bands!
RCPM – those tequila-fueled legends who’ve been rocking since the ‘90s with their signature mariachi-meets-rock sound – took one look at The Black Moods’ raw, amplified energy and said “these kids need to be on our stages!” Fast-forward to their epic collaboration at the legendary Circus Mexicus festival in Puerto Peñasco, where both bands absolutely crushed it together under the Mexican sun.
Josh Kennedy, Jordan Hoffman, and Chico Diaz from The Black Moods couldn’t have asked for better mentors. Roger Clyne’s crew has been championing them as high-profile opening acts, basically
giving them the rock star stamp of approval that money can’t buy. It’s like watching your favorite veteran band pass the torch to the next generation – except with way more tequila and infinitely cooler desert vibes!
This is Arizona rock legacy in action!
Meet The Bellwethers – Phoenix’s sonic alchemists who’ve been refusing to stay in any musical lane since 2010! These rock veterans have opened for massive acts like Papa Roach, REO Speedwagon, and even Don Felder from The Eagles, proving they can absolutely hang with the big dogs.
Working with Grammy award-winning producer Andrew Coleman, they create original rock that’s basically what happens when you throw Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones into a blender with some 70s psychedelic vibes and hit “chaos mode.” Their high-energy, hard-blues-rock sound is pure ear candy that’ll mess with your head in the best way possible.
From dive bars to marquee venues across the Southwest, they’ve even rocked the Arizona Cardinals Pre-Game Show at State Farm Stadium. Their album “Schizophrenic Zen” captures all their live energy and pours it straight into your speakers. These guys are Phoenix rock royalty with a seriously addictive sound!

CELEBRATING HISTORY, COMMUNITY, AND COWBOY SPIRIT SINCE 1888.
In the heart of Arizona’s high country, Prescott stands as a living testament to the enduring spirit of the American West. With pine-covered hills, crisp mountain air, and a historic downtown square lined with old saloons and local shops, Prescott is the kind of place where tradition matters — and nowhere is that more evident than in the pride it takes in hosting the World’s Oldest Rodeo®. Since 1888, this annual event has drawn cowboys, cowgirls, and fans from across the country, all eager to experience the thrill, grit, and pageantry that only a true Western rodeo can deliver.
The origins of this storied rodeo stretch back to July 4, 1888, when local merchants and ranchers organized what was called the “Cowboy Tournament” to coincide with the town’s Independence Day festivities. It wasn’t just for fun (though there was plenty of that); it was a way to showcase the working cowboy’s skill and celebrate the region’s rich ranching culture. That first event featured bronc riding, steer roping, and horse racing — the staples of any good rodeo — and drew cowboys from across Arizona Territory and beyond.
At the heart of that inaugural competition was Juan Leivas, a cowboy from Big Sandy Valley, who was crowned the first “Best Cowboy.” His win was immortalized with a trophy, which today can be seen at Prescott’s Sharlot Hall
Museum, a reminder of the humble beginnings of an event that would become world famous. What set Prescott’s rodeo apart, even then, was how structured it was: there was an official planning committee, invited participants, admission fees, cash prizes, and media coverage. These key elements laid the groundwork for what would eventually become the professional rodeo circuit we know today.
While many rodeos paused or folded over the years — during wars, economic downturns, or shifts in local culture — Prescott’s never missed a year. This unbroken streak earned it the title “World’s Oldest Rodeo®,” officially trademarked in 1985. That continuous legacy has made it not just a local point of pride, but a bucket-list destination for rodeo fans and competitors alike.
Over the years, the Prescott rodeo has grown, evolved, and modernized, but it has always honored its roots. It’s a place where old-school cowboy values meet the thrill of top-tier competition. Legendary names like Tom Mix, who went on to become a Hollywood cowboy star, and J.C. Trujillo, who was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame, have graced the Prescott arena. Today, the event draws the best of the best from the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), making it a mustsee for anyone who appreciates the sport.
CONTINUED >
Beyond the competition itself, the rodeo is a full-on community celebration. Locals and visitors alike gather not just for the performances but for the entire experience: the parade through downtown, the rodeo dances, the vendors and live music, the pageantry of the rodeo queens, and the laughter and cheers echoing from the stands. It’s an event that brings Prescott together — and invites the wider world to come and share in its traditions.
The 138th edition of the World’s Oldest Rodeo® is set to take place from June 30 to July 6, 2025, at the Prescott Rodeo Grounds. This year promises to deliver the same heart-pounding action fans have come to expect, with eight electrifying performances showcasing bull riding,
saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, and team roping. These events test the mettle of both human and animal athletes, offering moments of tension, triumph, and pure adrenaline.
Each day, gates will open two hours before the rodeo, giving guests a chance to enjoy a wide array of food trucks, Western-themed shopping, and local entertainment. You can grab a plate of barbecue, browse handcrafted leather goods, or pick up a signature Prescott souvenir before heading to your seat. Families, especially, will find the event welcoming, with activities and entertainment that cater to all ages.
One of the most anticipated moments each year is the rodeo parade, which will take place this year on July 5 at 9 a.m. Winding through the charming streets of downtown Prescott, the parade features colorful floats, equestrian groups, marching bands, classic cars, and plenty of local flavor. It’s a great way for families to extend their Fourth of July weekend and soak in the sense of community that defines this town.
In the evenings, the fun doesn’t stop when the arena lights go out. Rodeo dances, held from July 3 to July 5, give visitors a chance to let loose, kick up their boots, and dance the night away under the Arizona stars. Whether you’re two-stepping with your sweetheart or just enjoying the music, these dances are a lively way to cap off a day at the rodeo.
For those planning to attend, it’s recommended to purchase tickets early, as performances often sell out. You can secure your seats online at worldsoldestrodeo.com, where you’ll also find details about event schedules, parking, and the clear bag policy in place for 2025. While the rodeo draws fans from across the country, it retains the welcoming spirit that makes Prescott feel like a small town — no matter how big the crowds get.
What truly sets the Prescott rodeo apart, though, is its ability to honor the past while embracing the future. Even as rodeo sports have become faster, flashier, and more commercialized, Prescott holds fast to the traditions that made rodeo what it is: a celebration of grit, skill, bravery, and the timeless bond between people and the land they work.
Whether you’re a lifelong rodeo fan or someone curious to experience it for the first time, the World’s Oldest Rodeo® offers an authentic Western experience that’s hard to find anywhere else. You’ll feel the history in the wooden grandstands, the dust rising from the arena, and the cheers of the crowd. You’ll see it in the faces of the cowboys and cowgirls who’ve traveled far to test their skills, and in the proud locals who’ve made sure the event has endured for nearly a century and a half.
So pack your hat, your boots, and your sense of adventure, and head to Prescott this summer. There’s no better place to celebrate the Fourth of July, to connect with the spirit of the West, and to make memories that will last long after the final horn sounds. The Prescott Frontier Days World’s Oldest Rodeo® is waiting to welcome you — and you won’t want to miss it. For full event details, tickets, and travel information, visit worldsoldestrodeo.com

Ready to celebrate the 4th of July with some Wild West apple pie magic? These cowboy-approved recipes take classic apple flavors and add just the right twist to make your barbecue guests come back for seconds. We've made them simple enough for any home cook but special enough to steal the show at your holiday gathering!
CLASSIC COWBOY DESSERTS WITH MODERN TWISTS THAT ARE FUN, FOOLPROOF, AND ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS
Perfect after a long day on the ranch
These baked apples have been warming the hearts of cowboys for generations. Simple enough to make over an open fire, yet elegant enough for the ranch house dining room, they capture the true spirit of frontier hospitality.
• 3 apples, your choice of variety, halved and cored
• 3 tablespoons butter
• 1/4 cup brown sugar
• 1/2 cup apple juice or apple cider
• Fresh rosemary, chopped
• Brie, sliced
• Chopped walnuts or pecans
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Slice apples in half and remove the core with care. Heat your cast iron skillet—the same kind the chuck wagon cooks used on the old cattle drives— and melt butter. Add brown sugar and stir gently. Place apples face down in the skillet like setting up camp for the night, then add apple juice and a sprig of rosemary. Let apples cook on the stovetop for 5-10 minutes. Flip them over with the care of a seasoned wrangler and top with Brie, chopped walnuts, and fresh rosemary. Bake for 6-7 minutes until the Brie melts. These are best served warmed, but also reheat beautifully.
So whether you're escaping the Gilbert heat for a weekend in the pines or just dreaming of those cool Prescott nights, these apple treats bring all the magic of Frontier Days right to your kitchen. Giddy up and get cooking, partner—your taste buds are in for a real treat!
The cowboy classic that never goes out of style
No chuck wagon spread would be complete without this timeless dessert. It's been warming the bellies of cowboys and ranch hands for generations. Serve it up with vanilla ice cream and watch tough cowboys smile like schoolchildren.
Filling:
• 6-8 apples, peeled and sliced
• 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
• 1/4 cup flour
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
Topping:
• 3/4 cup flour
• 3/4 cup dark brown sugar
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
• 1 cup oats
• 1/4 cup pecans, chopped
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly grease your pie plate or cast iron baking dish—the same kind they used in the old chuck wagons. Mix all filling ingredients together with the same care you’d use to prepare a meal for hungry cowboys after a long day of herding cattle, then place in your baking dish. For the topping, combine flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl. Cut in butter using a fork or pastry cutter until it resembles the coarse dirt of the Arizona high desert. Stir in oats and pecans, then sprinkle over the filling until covered like dust on the old cattle trails. Bake for 45 minutes until golden brown and bubbling like a desert spring. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce—it’s the taste of home on the range.

SADDLE UP FOR UNFORGETTABLE COWBOY ADVENTURES, GHOST TOWNS, AND RODEO THRILLS JUST MINUTES FROM HOME.
If the hum of boots on old floorboards or a rodeo under the stars excites you, you’re in luck. Just outside Gilbert, Arizona, a treasure trove of Wild West experiences awaits—no horse required. From saddle barstools and ghost town theatrics to rodeo grit and saloon eats, these cowboy-cool escapes are close, charming, and perfect for any weekend adventure. Mix and match or explore spontaneously — all you need is gas, a love of adventure, and a little tumbleweed luck.
Got boots? Use ’em. Cave Creek’s Buffalo Chip Saloon delivers true rodeo action every Wednesday and Friday— bucking broncs, barrel racing, and adrenaline that leaves your heart racing. Afterward, grab a brisket sandwich, sway to live country music, and dance under the stars.
“It’s chaos and calm all at once, the purest test of strength and willpower,” says rodeo cowboy Majdi Troy Kayyali. “When the chute swings open and you’re face to face with a 1,500-pound athlete, everything else disappears. You’re in it—every second counts.”
Just east of the Valley near the Superstition Mountains, Goldfield Ghost Town takes you back in time. Stroll boardwalks lined with quirky shops, explore an old jail, and don’t be surprised if you hear gunshots (spoiler: it’s just actors staging a dramatic “death”). Try gold panning, ride Arizona’s only narrow gauge railroad, and enjoy mining tales — part movie set, part history, all fun.
Tucked along the scenic Apache Trail, Tortilla Flat is part saloon, part time capsule, and pure Arizona charm. With just six residents, it’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it stop—unless you’re grabbing prickly pear lemonade and famous chili. Saddle barstools, dollar-covered walls, homemade ice cream, and old jail selfies make this tiny town big on heart, stories, and unforgettable flavor.

It is 1974 on the island of Cyprus. Two teenagers, from opposite sides of a divided land, meet at a tavern in the city they both call home. The tavern is the only place that Kostas, who is Greek and Christian, and Defne, who is Turkish and Muslim, can meet, in secret, hidden beneath the blackened beams from which hang garlands of garlic, chili peppers and wild herbs. This is where one can find the best food in town, the best music, the best wine. But there is something else to the place: it makes one forget, even if for just a few hours, the world outside and its immoderate sorrows.

Three classic tales of childhood on an island paradise - My Family and Other Animals, Birds, Beasts and Relatives and The
Garden of the Gods by Gerald Durrell - are available in a single edition for the first time in The Corfu Trilogy
Just before the Second World War the Durrell family decamped to the glorious, sun-soaked island of Corfu, where the youngest of the four children, ten-year-old Gerald, discovered his passion for animals: toads and tortoises, bats and butterflies, scorpions and octopuses. Through glorious silver-green olive groves and across brilliant-white beaches Gerry pursued his obsession . . . causing hilarity and mayhem in his ever-tolerant family.
