As June approaches, we find ourselves reflecting on the warmth of summer, the joy of Father’s Day and the vibrant pulse of our community. In this month’s issue, our local gentlemen’s issue, we celebrate not just the season, but the influential men who shape our community, the music that speaks to us and the flavors that tantalize our palates.
Father’s Day is a time to honor the remarkable men who have played pivotal roles in our lives. From fathers and grandfathers to mentors and friends, these individuals embody strength, wisdom and love. Let’s take this opportunity to express our gratitude and celebrate their impact on our lives, not just on this day but every day.
Speaking of our influential men, Gallatin is blessed with individuals who dedicate themselves to making our city a better place. From business leaders to educators, volunteers to public servants, their contributions enrich our lives and shape our shared future. In this issue, we shine a spotlight on some of these remarkable individuals, highlighting their achievements and the positive influence they have on our community.
And what better way to celebrate the guys than with a bourbon tasting as we raise a glass to honor the men who have made a difference in our lives. Together, we explore the rich tradition and storied history of a local favorite: Maker’s Mark. There’s something special about sharing a drink with friends and loved ones, reminiscing about the past and toasting to the future. Guys, this is for you!
As we embark on this journey through June, let’s celebrate the men who have shaped our lives, the flavors that stir our historical interests and the individuals who enrich our community. Together, let’s embrace the warmth of summer and the endless possibilities that lie ahead!

HIGHLIGHTING OUR LOCAL MEN OF INFLUENCE WHO ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN GALLATIN
ARTICLE BY NICOLE BELL | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Dr. Reed, a native of Sumner County, is deeply committed to community health. Influenced by his father’s legacy as a public health dentist, Dr. Reed pursued surgery, drawn to its immediate impact on patients’ lives. Recognizing the rising obesity epidemic, Dr. Reed spearheaded the development of a comprehensive bariatric program in Gallatin, providing locals with access to life-changing surgical interventions previously only available in Nashville.
Driven by empathy and with a talented, multidisciplinary team at Highpoint Bariatrics, Dr. Reed ensures
patients receive holistic care, addressing physical and mental health needs alike. Embracing the philosophy of lifelong learning, Dr. Reed remains at the forefront of surgical innovation, locally and abroad.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Reed is a pop culture aficionado, a devoted family man and a proud Navy Veteran. His dedication to community health, coupled with his compassionate approach to patient care, reflects the enduring spirit of Gallatin—a city that values grace, growth and the well-being of all.
Barry Young is more than just a resident of Sumner County and sees himself in a much bigger role than even the new Executive Director of Historic Downtown Gallatin; he’s also a cornerstone of community spirit in our area. For over a decade, Barry has poured his heart and soul into the betterment of Gallatin, driven by a profound love for its people and heritage.
When asked about his affection for Gallatin, Barry’s eyes light up with pride. “It’s the people of Gallatin who make the difference. They are so friendly and helpful, and they are proud of their community and are willing to lend a helping hand when they are needed,” he says. Their warmth, generosity and pride in their community have captivated Barry’s heart, fueling his unwavering dedication.
One moment that stands out in Barry’s memory is the Gallatin Eclipse Encounter of 2017. “We had visitors from all over the world in Gallatin that day,” he recalls. The event not only showcased Gallatin’s hospitality but also demonstrated its ability to unite in celebration, with local agencies and volunteers coming together seamlessly. Barry is also involved in
projects like the Temple Theatre in Portland and the County Sumner Irish Festival that reflects his commitment to preserving Gallatin’s cultural heritage while embracing growth.
Despite his impressive resume, Barry remains humble, focusing on the future of Gallatin. “I think it’s important to keep our historic downtown culture and character,” he emphasizes. It’s this vision that continues to inspire him to bring locals and visitors alike to downtown Gallatin, ensuring its legacy endures.
Gallatin’s Official Poet Laureate City of Gallatin
A product of the blue-collar suburbs of Detroit, Kevin’s journey from budding poet to Gallatin’s Poet Laureate is a testament to his spirit. Influenced by 60s folk-rock and literary luminaries, Kevin’s work pushes traditional boundaries, encompassing experimental filmmaking, performance art and conceptual photography. His poetry, an exploration of masking, otherness and the power of nature, challenges readers to see beyond the ordinary. As Gallatin’s artistic ambassador, Kevin not only celebrates the city’s cultural heritage but also ignites its future through various local art events like the Gallatin Book Readers Collective and Avant-Garde Film Nights.

Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.
01. Get
If you are buying clubs off the rack, you aren’t giving yourself the best chance for success. Golf technology is evolving every year, and although you don’t need to buy a new driver each year, if you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. Generally, a $300 driver has a low-grade $15 shaft that you should change. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.
02. Get good golf instruction, REGULARLY.
We’ve all heard someone say, “I should get a lesson sometime.” To be effective, you need regular lessons from a PGA certified pro, not just one lesson. Getting quality instruction from the same instructor can turn slices into draws and give you the confidence to play with anyone on any course. Years ago, golf instructors started instruction with chipping and putting and then graduated to the driver. Now, instructors have been pressured to start with the driver because we all want to outdrive our friends. Resist that temptation! Get instruction on your short game and irons first. My friend regularly outdrives me by 50 yards, but my ball is in the hole first most of the time because of my training and practice on the short game.
03.
There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads:
Short game: Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz
Mental game: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella
Mechanics: Practical Golf by John Jacobs
Ball flight laws: The Practice Manual by Adam Young (only read the first 50 pages)
Practice your short game every day.
04.
You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.
Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.

On any given Saturday night, you can find Drew Parker performing in stadiums around the country as a supporting act on Luke Combs’ Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old Tour. It’s a surreal feeling for the 32-year-old Georgia native, now living in Gallatin, who says he fell in love with music at a young age.
“I was always a music fan and grew up singing in church, and that’s where I really discovered my passion for it,” Drew says.
Drew also had an early love for sports; at one point, he thought he might play college baseball, but an injury made him rethink his future. Soon after, and after graduating high school, he met and befriended a promoter who helped him start booking shows – an early foreshadowing moment to his future musical endeavors.

“BETTING ON MYSELF ALONG THE WAY IS WORTH IT TO FINALLY BE GETTING TO DO WHAT I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO AT THIS LEVEL.”
“That ultimately led to me opening for a guy named Luke Combs in 2014 who nobody knew at the time,” Drew says. “Me and him hit it off. We met at a bar in Rome, Georgia, and he had just moved to Nashville. He was the first person to invite me to Nashville to write songs.”
Those early moments in Drew’s career really set the tone for his success and spring boarded him into the throes of the Nashville country music scene. He spent nearly a year going back and forth between Georgia and Nashville writing songs with Luke Combs. In 2015, he and his wife decided to make the permanent move to Nashville to chase his dream of writing and performing music professionally.
Since that time, he hasn’t looked back and has fit right into the area. When he’s not on stage or writing music, Drew says he and his family live a fairly normal life and love calling Gallatin home. Gallatin has just the right mix of family atmosphere with the perfect amount of charm that reminds Drew and his wife of the town they grew up in and their early childhood memories in Covington, Georgia. Living in Gallatin allows Drew to be close to Nashville; being able to stay close to his inner circle that helped propel him to where he is professionally is an added bonus.
“We love being in a town [Gallatin] that has so many local things to offer, and it’s so close to the music; it really is the best of everything we could ever dream of,” Drew says. “We’re looking forward to having our kids grow up in a place kind of similar to how we did.”
During their free time, he and his family love trying out different restaurants in the area, playing golf, hanging out with friends and attending their church.
Hailing from a small town in Georgia, now living in Gallatin, Drew found his passion for music at a very young age, captivating small church audiences with his voice since age three. Inspired by country legends like Keith Whitley, Travis Tritt, Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings, he taught himself guitar at 14 and later mastered piano. In 2015, and with the encouragement of close friends and family, he made the leap to Nashville, where he ultimately inked a publishing deal with a record label in 2017. Notably, he has co-written hits like Luke Combs’ “This One’s For You” and Jake Owen’s “Homemade”. Known for his authenticity and heartfelt lyrics, Parker embodies the essence of true country. With a genuine spirit, amazing musical talent and an admitted old soul, he continues to rise in the country music world and his name is becoming synonymous with the success of both his own, and those with whom he collaborates.
Drew has co-written several popular Luke Combs songs and received a Grammy nomination for Best Country Song for the song “Doin’ This.” He spends most days writing with the hopes of other artists recording his songs while also working on music for himself. He’s looking forward to putting out new music this year that he hopes to hear blaring from the car next to him at any given stoplight very soon.
“My hope is really just to grow as an artist to where people hopefully one day know the songs I’ve written,” he says.
Drew says it’s been a lifelong dream to be able to provide for his family by doing music, and it’s hard to describe the feeling of his success. As the saying goes, “success brings more success.” Drew continues to build on the foundation that has been laid since he began this journey.
“It’s definitely made everything that has led up to this point worthwhile. Betting on myself along the way is worth it to finally be getting to do what I’ve always wanted to do and to do it at this level,” Drew says.
When reflecting back on his music career and the work he’s put in over the years, he says he wouldn’t be where he is today without the support of his family and wife.
“She bet on me years ago and has supported me along the way. She knows how much of a dream and passion it is for me to do music,” Drew says. “We’re still figuring out how to navigate this life, because there’s no handbook on the industry. We’re learning every day and finding support in friends and family.”
Drew hopes his music will reach as many people as it can, and he continues to look for as many touch points as possible, connecting with fans through his music and in person.
“My main goal is to continue to have fun and enjoy what I’m doing while I’m doing it.”
Nothing describes summer better than a good cookout! And what is a cookout without a good, quality steak and the perfect grilling recipe?
1. Thaw and acclimate the steak. For searing to occur, the proteins in steak need to be heated to at least 310°F. Tossing cold meat onto a hot grill lowers the temperature and can prevent a crust from forming, so it’s important that any frozen steaks are thawed completely before cooking.
2. Salt your steak 30-45 minutes before grilling. This causes the salt to draw moisture from within the steak up to the surface, where it dissolves the salt and creates a brine that gets reabsorbed into the steak where it breaks down tough connective tissues.
3. Oil the grate on the grill, not the steak. Use tongs and a paper towel dipped in vegetable oil to lube your grates.
4. Manage your heat well. Remember that your grill needs to be hot for your steak to get a good sear. But if it’s hot enough to cause your oil to smoke, it’s too hot.
5. Use the 60/40 rule. The best-tasting steaks are seared on both sides and cooked evenly in the middle. The simplest way to do that is to only flip your steak once. The 60/40 rule suggests that 60% of your cook time should be spent on one side, and 40% on the other.
6. Keep the lid closed. It may be tempting to peek, but trust the experts and keep it shut! Opening the lid makes your grill lose heat, which makes steaks cook unevenly.
7. Check for doneness. A meat thermometer will give you the most accurate temperature reading:
• Rare: 120°F
• Medium Rare: 130°F
• Medium: 140°F
• Medium Well: 150°F
• Well: 160°F
8. Let your steak rest. Pull your steaks from the grill once they’re cooked to 5-10 degrees below your target temperature and rest for 10-15 minutes.

It’s a moment of true craftsmanship and artistry where visitors become part of the Maker’s Mark legacy.
But perhaps the most enduring legacy of all is the Maker’s Mark ambassador program. More than just a tour, this program offers participants an unforgettable journey through bourbon history and tradition. Whether you’re a seasoned bourbon connoisseur or a curious newcomer, the Maker’s Mark Distillery lets you discover the true spirit of Kentucky bourbon-making.
