1. Exercise regularly: Engage in activities that improve strength, balance, and flexibility, such as walking, yoga, or tai chi. Regular exercise can help maintain muscle tone and stability, reducing the risk of falls.
2. Keep your home safe: Remove clutter, secure loose rugs, and ensure good lighting throughout your living space. Install grab bars in bathrooms and handrails on staircases to provide support and prevent falls.
3. Get regular vision check-ups: Maintain good eye health and update your eyeglasses or contact lenses prescription as needed. Clear vision is essential for navigating the environment safely.
4. Review medications: Consult with your healthcare provider or pharmacist to assess the potential side effects of medications and their interactions. Certain medications can increase the risk of falls, so it's important to be aware and make any necessary adjustments.
5. Stay mentally active: Engage in activities that stimulate the mind, such as puzzles, reading, or learning new skills. A sharp mind contributes to better awareness and decision-making, reducing the chances of accidents.
6. Wear appropriate footwear: Choose comfortable shoes with nonslip soles that provide proper support. Avoid high heels, loosefitting shoes, or footwear that increases the risk of tripping.

If there are two things in this world that eternally steal our hearts and minds, is there any question that our children and pets are at the top of that list? For most of us, some of our best days and happiest joys come directly from the relationships we have and keep between these two. It’s no wonder our kids and pets have such a profound impact on our everyday lives.
In August, we are thrilled to present our Kids & Pets issue, dedicated entirely to the world of our local kids and local pets. Our mission has always been to celebrate the magic that transpires when children and animals come together. We believe that the lessons learned, the love shared and the memories created in these unique connections shape the lives of those involved.
In this issue, we explore unique relationships from various angles, showing the inspiring gifts of a local young musician who captivates audiences with his melodies, an equine rescue organization who works tirelessly to provide a safe haven for neglected and abused horses, as well as others making a difference in the lives of our most cherished humans and pets. Within these pages, you’ll discover an array of heartwarming stories that exemplify the power of love and companionship. Prepare to be captivated by charming images that capture the essence of these delightful relationships, evoking smiles and warming hearts.
As you embark on the journey through our August Kids & Pets issue, we hope you find inspiration, joy and a renewed appreciation for the extraordinary bonds that exist. May it remind us all of the magic that can be found when children and animals come together in harmony and may we all learn to love (and to live) just a little bit more because of it! NICOLE

LUCAS COLLIER IS MAKING WAVES IN THE LOCAL MUSIC SCENE
Step into the vibrant and well-known music scene in Gallatin and chances are you’ll soon realize how important music and musicians are to our area. While many Nashville artists love using Gallatin’s musical charm and picturesque downtown square as backdrops to many recent music videos and performances (Brett Eldredge, Mickey Guyton, Kane Brown and Parmalee, just to name a few), some of the best local, up-and-coming artists call Gallatin home, too.

"A couple of days before the show we rehearsed together and when the time came, the room went absolutely wild! It was a surreal and defining moment for me when I realized how important pursuing music was to me."
“So much about music is this thing that connects people and it’s always fun to be on stage and perform in a way that connects people together, even if it’s only for a song or two.”
One of those local and talented artists happens to be 15-year-old Lucas Collier, who is making big waves in our area with his music. With his soulful voice and remarkable guitar skills, Lucas has become a shining star, captivating audiences with his heartfelt performances and original compositions. Beyond his musical abilities, Lucas possesses a genuine spirit and unwavering passion for his craft, pouring his heart and soul into every note he plays. Lucas also serves as an inspiration to other aspiring local musicians, often of the younger generation, showcasing the transformative power of following his own dream to relentlessly pursue artistic excellence. As the Nashville area around us starts to take notice of our local Gallatin rising star, we were fortunate enough to catch up with Lucas to allow him to share with us some of the things he’s most proud of and what he’s preparing for in the future with his budding music career.
I started taking piano lessons when I was six years old and it really came natural for me and I was having fun at the same time. I kept going with playing the piano and somewhere along the way, I started singing and the more I sang, the more I liked it.
A friend of mine landed a set at a legendary Nashville venue called 3rd & Lindsley. He loved an original song of mine so he asked me if I would be willing to come up during his set and play the song with him. A couple of days before the show we rehearsed together and when the time came, the room went absolutely wild! It was a surreal and defining moment for me when I realized how important pursuing music was to me. I’m all in on it now!
For me, out of all the different aspects of music, it’s sharing that moment with other people. So much about music is this thing that connects people and it’s always fun to be on stage and perform in a way that connects people together, even if it’s only for a song or two.

Helping area children succeed by dreaming the biggest dreams for their future
ARTICLE BY NICOLE BELL | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDEDCharacter development, academic achievement and community involvement are all fundamentals in the life of a child. The desire to make a difference, remove barriers to success and unlock the potential of at-risk children was a vision of Children Are People, Inc.’s founder, Fred Bailey in 2001.
Children Are People, Inc. provides a safe, after school environment for K-12 students to get homework help, eat a healthy meal and to be surrounded by caring adults who guide and mentor them through school and life. CAP also finds it extremely important to offer job skills training while instilling strong character and work ethic, good manners, helping with college prep and providing a summer program that cultivates creative arts, music theory and swim lessons.
From reading a book with a younger student, mentoring older students about their career paths, helping with events or serving meals, CAP volunteers and staff have transformed the lives of thousands of young people throughout Sumner County, working tirelessly to unlock the potential of at-risk youth.
CAP depends on donations, grants, fundraisers and corporate sponsorships to fund their programs and facility. Their fall gala, Under the Big Top, on October 7th, benefits CAP programs and services to students and their families. The future is bright for CAP as they continue to be a resource for students to provide a safe, nurturing environment where kids have the opportunity to live and dream for their future!

Have Fun!
Research has demonstrated that children who have good oral health tend to have healthier eating habits, achieve higher academic performance, excel in school and develop greater levels of confidence for future endeavors. Setting early goals and good foundational habits are important in all aspects of life, but ensuring that early dental care is a bedrock that we can never begin with our children too early is paramount. While we know many parents and patients alike experience anxiety when visiting the dentist, here in Gallatin, Dr. Bora Kim has carved out a truly unique experience by making dental appointments enjoyable and stress free for both parents and children!
Settling in Gallatin for its proximity to Nashville, but still desiring the small-town warmth and charm that our area offers, Dr. Bora Kim opened Glowing Smiles Pediatric Dentistry in April 2023 with a welcoming space that offers personalized experiences and a carefully selected staff who genuinely enjoy working with the most important patients of all: our children. Dr. Kim received
her Bachelor of Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology and later graduated from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Dental Medicine. With her heart set on pediatric dentistry to ensure she could be as impactful to our youth as possible, she went on to complete her pediatric dental training at the University of Southern California. Dr. Kim is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD) and has advanced training in tongue and lip-tie releases as well. With Glowing Smiles here in Gallatin providing such amazing services to children and their parents, Dr. Kim is able to provide care for patients ranging from newborns to 25 years old. Nursing mothers who are having difficulty with their baby's latch, or parents of older children experiencing speech, eating or orthodontic issues also find treatment and specialized programs at Glowing Smiles with Dr. Kim. Her office also specializes in frenectomy procedures and is able to utilize a state-of-the-art C02 laser that typically requires no anesthesia for many procedures in a less invasive (and less time-consuming) manner!
ARTICLE BY PATTI GORDON PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAYTON WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHYAt Glowing Smiles, the waiting room shows off a fun activity table and an adorable picture wall that immediately sets the tone! While amazing care is always the mission, the “fun factor” of simply being inside Glowing Smiles is an experience in itself! In addition to all of the activities that help relax the patient and family, Dr. Kim has even installed a dental chair designed to resemble a Lamborghini, several ceiling-mounted TVs, a toy shelf for children to enjoy after their visit and you may even see their happiest, resident therapy dog named Leo wandering the hallways too! Leo adores being held and has a calming effect for anxious children (and parents!) who may be a bit apprehensive about dentist offices.
The dental experience at Glowing Smiles is specifically designed and equipped for younger children and has features such as x-ray machines that utilize the latest dental x-ray technology to ensure minimal exposure. Additionally, there are different sedation options that can be utilized when needed and Dr. Kim is one of the very few pediatric dentists that offers tooth-colored white crowns for children in our area.
Dr. Kim, with a soft tone and gentle touch, enhances the care experience by employing child-friendly language and refrains from using intimidating terms such as shots, drill and pain. In cases where a child feels anxious or frightened, the office offers various tools like fidget toys to alleviate their distress. For parents struggling with finding appropriate, specialized dental care for their children, in an office that is warm, welcoming and FUN, Dr. Bora Kim says a visit to the dentist doesn’t have to be intimidating. She also provides some great tips for in between visits as well:
BRUSHING YOUR CHILDREN’S TEETH
Transform it into a game! By making it enjoyable, you will elicit a more positive response. Additionally, utilizing positive reinforcements and implementing a rewards system can be quite effective too!
COMMON HABITS THAT CAN HARM A CHILD’S ORAL HEALTH
Consuming gummy candies or vitamins can be detrimental to their small, developing teeth. Even dried fruits in sticky form can cause damage and diluted juices are also harsh on teeth.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PEDIATRIC DENTIST AND A TRADITIONAL DENTIST
There is limited exposure to young teeth in general dentistry during school. To qualify for pediatric dentistry, an additional two to three years of training is required to be prepared, qualified and certified to work with young children.
Check out Glowing Smiles Pediatric's social media pages to see the behind-the-scenes fun the office has and utilize their website to schedule appointments or for additional dental FAQs and tips!

Summertime for most of us brings up distant memories of eternal summers spent playing in the water and the sunshine. Just because we are grown up now doesn’t mean we can’t still have some summer fun! There are many inexpensive ways you and your pups can take advantage of the long days and warm nights.
For starters, I think we can all agree that there is something so nostalgic about hooking up the sprinkler to the water hose and running back and forth through the water in your backyard. This is a great activity for kids, adults and dogs alike to beat the summer heat! To elevate the experience, add a bubble machine to the mix and run through the sprinkler and the bubbles! Your pups will have a great time biting and pawing at the bubbles!
Freeze your dog’s favorite treats and toys inside a bowl filled with water the night before the sprinkler party to add yet another cool element. Your dog will enjoy the cooling effects of the ice while gnawing and pawing their way through to get those tasty treats and fun toys! You can even make “pupsicles” by blending half a ripe banana with one cup peanut butter and enough water to make the mixture liquid. Spoon the mixture into an ice cube tray or Kong toy and freeze.
As the evening sunset fades into the night, be sure to keep an eye out for the dog star, Sirius, to appear in the sky for the perfect ending to a perfect summer day. Here are four other, fun places you can enjoy with your dogs!
A 3.5-mile out-and-back trail in Sumner County. Considered an easy route, it is a mostly flat trail that runs along a creek and takes about an hour to complete. There is a restroom at the turnaround point and playgrounds for kids. Dogs are welcome and may even be off-leash in some areas! Bring your bike, kids, scooters, dogs, a bottle of water and a smile for this relaxing trail!
Bring your family and your pups on Saturday mornings from 8:30am to 1:30pm! This amazing farmer’s market hosts local growers selling their fresh, naturally-raised veggies, fruits, herbs, meats, eggs and honey, as well as local bakers serving homemade sourdough cinnamon rolls, breads and other pastries! Buy a hand-carved wooden bowl, an embroidery kit, some goat’s milk soap or organic treats for your pup while you are there!
Monthly, relaxing, outdoor family-friendly musical entertainment featuring talented local song writers performing original music. This event hosts local food trucks and locally-crafted beer brewers, as well as organized games and inflatables for the kids! Bring a picnic blanket, lawn chairs, your leashed pups and your family! Rock Castle has been voted, “The Best Outdoor Music Venue” in Sumner County. Admission is $10 for guests age 13 and up. Kids younger than 13 are free!

Celebrating 20 years of equine rescue, Volunteer Equine Advocates is located on a peaceful property right here in Gallain. As a 501c3, VEA works directly with enforcement agencies to help with neglected and abandoned horses, along with other equine cruelty cases across Middle Tennessee. Since 2003, VEA has rescued more than 1,200 horses, mules, donkeys and ponies.
VEA prides itself on the positive reinforcement training they implement as they teach horses and other animals that have arrived too afraid of human touch to appreciate the love from volunteers. Some of the crucial
roles VEA volunteers take on are feeding, grooming, training and fundraiser events as the success of VEA is rooted in local volunteerism.
VEA volunteers come from all walks of life but all have one thing in common: the desire to make positive impacts. From families large and small, to experienced adults and youth groups, to those with no experience with horses and those looking to fulfill their Tennessee Promise hours including scouts and students, every individual who steps foot onto VEA’s property makes a meaningful difference in the lives of these creatures who need a caring touch.
Tennessee is the Volunteer State and always carries a strong culture and tradition of community service. Volunteers of VEA become part of this tradition while making a positive impact on the lives of horses in need. Whether you’re an experienced adult looking to share your knowledge or someone without any prior experience but have a passion for helping animals, volunteering with VEA is an excellent opportunity to make a difference in our area.
