Vesting In Besting
Investment by definition is the act of devoting time, effort, energy or finances to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result. We can invest in a lot of things such as our community, our relationships, our finances and our health with the hope that the effort will have a positive impact. We can invest in our community by supporting our local businesses, schools and local organizations. We can serve the community through volunteerism and investment in future generations.
On a larger scale, we can participate in public surveys and stay educated and involved with future city planning. Investing in our finances helps create wealth, meets long-term financial goals and secures our retirement. On a personal level, we can invest in our families and enrich relationships by giving time and effort to the people in our lives that mean the most to us. This type of investment has the most meaningful impact to not only ourselves but to the people closest to us.
While investing in ourselves, relationships, community and finances can look very different from person to person, the effort we put into these areas of our lives are done with the common goal of having a positive impact that yields results. In this edition, we wanted to share about some of the ways that we can invest in our community, our finances and with those that we love.
We also wanted to encourage everyone to pause and soak in nature's beauty as we change seasons and as we observe Earth Day.

U.S. founding father Benjamin Franklin stated: “an investment in education gives the best returns.” Frisco pioneers must have gotten that memo.
Think back to 1903 when the Frisco Independent School District was founded. At that time, various activities and notable attention was being invested into the area's burgeoning agricultural and train-inspired community. During the same time period of the school district's origin, Frisco originally was named Emerson, but that name was rejected by the U.S. Postal Service as being too similar to another town in Texas. In 1904, the residents chose the name Frisco City in honor of the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway and later shortened it to its present name, Frisco.
Seeds of education were thoughtfully and deliberately planted, along with the city, 122 years ago! Current residents and businesses are reaping rewards from that initiative and strategic planning.
Prior to the Frisco ISD forming, there was Robertson School between 1850-1935; Bass School during 1869-1884; Bush and Hackberry schools until the late 1930s; Lebanon School 1875-1948; Howard

School 1884-1902; Erudia School 1897-1920; and Frisco Public School 1902-1912.
Mike Waldrip, MEd, Frisco ISD Superintendent, says all involved with the district continually reflect on its mission of knowing each child’s name and need while encouraging them to embrace future-ready learning opportunities.
Frisco's public school district currently covers portions of Denton and Collin counties, including portions of Frisco, McKinney, Little Elm and Plano, as well as unincorporated land. In 1993, Frisco ISD had approximately 1,933 students who attended four schools. On a percentage basis, Frisco ISD representatives state no school district in the United States grew faster than Frisco ISD from 1987-88 to 2014-15. More than 66,700 students now are educated in 43 elementary schools, one intermediate school, 18 middle school locations, 12 high schools and three special program centers. Surrounding those students are at least 4,577 teachers and 8,799 staffers.
While Frisco ISD is no longer the fastest-growing district in Texas, the district's leaders indicate families from around the world continue to make Frisco ISD their home.

students have the opportunity to leave high school with college credits, certifications or even an associate’s degree, states Dr. Waldrip.
"And with our student opportunity model, students have a greater opportunity to participate in fine arts, athletics and academics, developing leadership skills and talent," he adds.
To ensure the ongoing engagement of stakeholders within Frisco ISD, district officials made FISD a 'District of Innovation' on Feb.13, 2017, following board adoption of a Local Innovation Plan. The plan was developed by a committee of parents, staff and community members during November 2016 and was approved by the District Improvement Team during February 2017. The plan was renewed by the board on Jan. 11, 2022. Amendments are approved by the board and added to the plan each year.
Frisco ISD School Board of Trustees President Dynette Davis says it's a privilege to work alongside individuals committed to improving the education and future of local students. "Our success as a district is because of the dedicated education professionals that show up every day for our students and families. Our forward-thinking innovation makes us No. 1."
Dynette recalls that since moving to Frisco in 2012, she's seen Frisco ISD flourish into a destination district. "Thanks to FISD’s focus on strong academics and outstanding opportunities for students, families specifically move here from around the world to send their children to Frisco ISD schools. People want to work in FISD and travel from all over North Texas to do so, bringing their kids into the district, too."
In the nearly four years Dynette has been a FISD Trustee, she says she's been fortunate to get to know many of these students’ and teachers’ stories. "I've been so impressed by their hard work and dedication to excellence."
Dynette continues: "From the high number of students taking fine arts, to having the most National Merit Semifinalists in Texas in 2023, Frisco ISD is ensuring every student has a well-rounded, robust education that can carry them into college and beyond. The time and effort that educators invest in FISD students empowers them to become agents of positive change in the world. We're so proud of the students of Frisco ISD and of the educators who support them."

Roxanne Rapske Imagine voluminous franchise possibilities to size up.
Ever wondered what it would be like to go into business for yourself, yet find yourself unsure of how to begin?
Roxanne Rapske, a seasoned franchise specialist at FranNet, draws upon her two decades of experience in Corporate America, and her firsthand knowledge of launching a successful business to assist individuals in identifying the ideal business opportunity that optimizes their chances of success.
After spending 20 years as a mortgage banker in Corporate America, Roxanne says she faced a sudden loss of income during the 2007 recession, prompting her to re-evaluate her career path. Following extensive research, she transitioned to become an independent franchise consultant. In 2013, Roxanne joined FranNet as a franchise specialist, drawing on her personal experience to guide others through similar career transitions.
Reflecting on her journey, Roxanne emphasizes her unique perspective as someone who weathered challenges and found success in the franchising industry.
She shares, "I have personally experienced the impact of the great recession, transitioning into franchising during a challenging economic period. Despite the adversity, this journey has been a transformative experience, allowing me to reclaim my life and become a better mother, wife and daughter.”
When considering franchise opportunities, Roxanne says it's important to understand the three main types available.
First, there are brick-and-mortar franchises, encompassing businesses such as retail outlets, restaurants, hotels and car service shops. Initial investments for these ventures typically range from $300,000 to $1 million-plus. Second, service-based franchises, such as roofing or housecleaning companies, offer nonbrick-and-mortar options with lower investment requirements, typically falling between $100,000 and $300,000. Last, business-to-business franchises, such
as signage or direct mail companies, some of which can begin as home-based operations, offer a more affordable entry point for prospective franchisees.
Roxanne sees her role as a franchise expert as playing matchmaker, with a portfolio of approximately 300 vetted franchises at her disposal.
Using her clients' entrepreneur profiles and assisting them in constructing a solid business model, she says she gains insight into their skill sets, interests, experience, finances and goals. This information allows her to carefully match them with franchises that align well on both ends.
Emphasizing that franchises are awarded rather than purchased, Roxanne highlights the selective nature of franchise companies in the process. Typically starting with four different franchise options, she says a client will typically invest 10 to 15 hours per week engaging with and learning more about each one.
Roxanne meets with her clients weekly to ensure their questions are thoroughly addressed. Through a process of elimination, she guides her clients in gathering the necessary information to make informed decisions, typically taking 30 to 90 days.
"It's important to make a well-rounded decision based on logic, intuition and careful consideration rather than solely on emotion," she assures.
Committed to her client's success, she says she's deeply involved in every step of the process, ensuring no crucial details are overlooked and no shortcuts are taken. "My goal is to see my clients thrive, using a hands-on approach to set them up for success."
Roxanne's clientele is diverse, including transitioning or laid-off executives, the underemployed, and individuals seeking a change from their corporate environments. She says she's observed a growing interest among teachers and nurses looking for new opportunities and specializes in assisting military veterans transitioning to entrepreneurship.

“By aligning with a proven concept, you are tapping into a foundation of success rather than reinventing the wheel.”
- Roxanne Rapske, franchise specialist at FranNet.

Many of her clients seek guidance on exiting their current career paths or diversifying their income streams.
Roxanne also works with individuals nearing retirement who wish to pursue post-retirement endeavors, as well as spouses seeking to re-enter the workforce or supplement their income. Whether they are existing business owners, investors or employed individuals, Roxanne says she provides tailored franchising solutions. She notes the evolving landscape of the franchising industry, with an increasing number of women and individuals of varying ages exploring franchise opportunities.
"The trend of multi-generational families entering franchising is on the rise, offering a pathway to leave a legacy," she adds.
Roxanne has noticed a significant increase in interest compared to just a year ago, with more individuals seeking to establish additional revenue streams amidst potential layoffs. Many are proactively exploring franchise opportunities as a contingency plan. The Dallas market stands out for its rapid pace of franchise concept sales and remarkable growth. A trend observed is the upfront purchase of multiple franchise units, often in three-pack or five-pack configurations, with a focus on territory ownership for scalability. Initial investments are typically concentrated in a single brand, with diversification occurring after establishing several units. Many investors are drawn to semi-absentee business models that can be managed by hired personnel, allowing for a hands-off approach once operations are established. Despite concerns about inflation and high interest rates, Roxanne notes the franchise industry in the Dallas region remains resilient.
Clients incur no costs for Roxanne's services, as she is compensated by the franchises seeking assistance in finding the perfect match for their concept. Success in franchising hinges on leveraging a proven business model to provide clients with the optimal opportunity for success as business owners.
"I firmly believe that individuals are in control of their own destinies and I find great fulfillment in advising those interested in embarking on a franchise journey and seizing control of their lives," she says.
"When embarking on a business venture, there is inherent risk. However, by franchising and investing in a proven model
backed by thorough research, you effectively mitigate that risk," explains Roxanne. "By aligning with a proven concept, you are tapping into a foundation of success rather than reinventing the wheel."
Entering the world of franchising can be a daunting task, with the overwhelming amount of information available online and the fear of missing out on the perfect opportunity. To navigate this process successfully, Roxanne recommends these five tips.
1. Seek guidance from a local franchise consultant: Instead of relying solely on Internet research, find a franchise consultant in your local market with whom you feel comfortable and trust. Their expertise can help navigate the complex world of franchising.
2. Take Time: Rushing into a franchise agreement can lead to regrets down the line. Allow yourself 30 to 90 days to thoroughly research and evaluate potential opportunities before deciding.
3. Consult with a franchise lawyer: Before signing any agreements, it's crucial to have a franchise lawyer review the terms to ensure you fully understand your rights and obligations.
4. Financial preparedness is key: Understand your household expenses and create a budget that includes reserves to cover your household for at least 12 months, as well as the cash portion of the franchise purchase.
5. Align your skills and passion: Choose a franchise that aligns with your skill set and interests to ensure a fulfilling and sustainable business venture. Avoid falling into the trap of buying a franchise that feels like just another job; aim for something that excites you every day.
Roxanne and her colleague Sara Waskow co-host the podcast "Unpredicted Entrepreneur," offering listeners insights into the benefits of franchising as a pathway to business ownership. The show features firsthand accounts of entrepreneurial triumphs, providing a valuable resource for aspiring business owners.

investing a good way to increase net worth, says Real Estate Broker Tonya Babers Dangerfield. Along with her husband and fellow Realtor, Nick Dangerfield, they work with Frisco regional home buyers and sellers as the Tonya Dangerfield Home Team via HomeSmart. Victor Lee, Realtor, and Ashley Dangerfield, Realtor, also are members of the team.
"Homeowners gain home equity as they pay down their mortgage and this is the No. 1 advantage of homeownership, with tax breaks and benefits, being a close second," says Tonya, who likens owning homes to having healthy savings and checking accounts to "live in," unlike stocks and mutual funds.
The "savings account" automatically grows as the home builds equity, she says. "If a homeowner needs liquid cash, they can pull those funds out of the equity in their home,
in the form of a line of credit, a cash out refinance loan, or by selling their property."
Some of the best places to live enjoy proximity to parks, schools, entertainment and other amenities that many homebuyers seek out. For example, a University of Washington study showed homes located near a park or open spaces are valued between 8% to 20% higher than comparable homes.
Tonya says the Collin County housing market is still hot, and economists predicted it will heat up more in 2024 due to lack of prior inventory on the market.

CREATE DO-IT-YOURSELF KINDNESS ROCKS WITH INSPIRING MESSAGES ALONG ALL PATHS OF LIFE

May is Mental Health Awareness -paint some rocks and share to inspire strangers.
KKindness ROCKS, both literally and figuratively, for people in-the-know. ‘Keep or hide; you decide!’ is the approach of a volunteer program geared to spread kindness to strangers. Rock painting is a fun outlet and satisfying form of self-care, as well as a way to launch kindness into the world. What should associated rocks convey? “The perfect message to paint is the message you need yourself,” recommend rock art coaches.
Some people use paint pens to achieve detail and precision on rocks, others create masterpieces with thin brushes and acrylic paints. Acrylic paints dry quickly, and after a few minutes, a new coat can be applied over the previous one.
While the initiative of decorating and sharing inspiring rocks started on
a national basis via The Kindness Rocks Project, there is a local, ‘Frisco Texas Rocks’ online group via the Facebook platform, whose purpose of its approximately 1,470 members is to spread happiness and to inspire others to do the same. The local group is affiliated with the national one.
After decorating a rock, participants label it with ‘Facebook or FB @ FriscoTexasROCKS’ to help others find the group’s page, post pictures and info about the painted rocks. If there is room on a rock, painters add #thekindnessrocksproject; or perhaps place the hashtag on the back of it.
In general, when finding such rocks, there are at least two options: Unless the rock found has a specific traveling mission written on it, it’s the finder’s to keep or rehide. It’s always a gift, either way.
“Posting a picture of your find on our group page does pass that smile back and
encourages the artist to keep painting but it’s not required,” state the co-administrators of the Frisco group. “Our sole purpose is to spread some happiness. We hope the rocks you find brighten your day and inspire you to pass along random acts of kindness.”
The rock kindness trend originated in the United States, and especially spread to the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Haiti. The Kindness Rocks Project is often credited to Megan Murphy during 2015. She reportedly wrote: ‘You’ve got this’ on a rock and left it on a beach on Cape Cod. After a friend found it, she started leaving more rocks with inspirational messages behind.
Alice Brock, a Cape Cod resident who had been painting rock art since the 1960s, claimed credit for helping spread the phenomenon worldwide by sending painted rocks to her friends and family in New York City and Europe.

INDOOR PLANT GUIDE
Investing in indoor plants can not only spruce up your living space, but also bring numerous health and well-being benefits
Bringing the outdoors in with the use of house plants is a great way to add color and dimension to your space. We sat down with Jesse Nelson at Family Tree Nursery, based in Kansas, and discussed the benefits of incorporating plant life into your home.“There are plenty of studies on the health benefits of plants, and the evidence suggests that being around plants and caring for plant life increases overall wellness,” explains Nelson. “Anytime you bring a plant into a home or work environment, it’s going to make you feel better. It is going to beautify the space in a way that art cannot, and they also have the added benefit of purifying the air.” There are a wide variety of indoor plants that work for any space and light situation that you may have. Regardless if you have a green thumb or a black thumb, there are plant varieties that fit your lifestyle. Here are a few of our favorite indoor plants to incorporate into your home.

ANTHURIUM:
Anthurium has gorgeous, colorful flowers and is the easiest indoor flowering plant to care for. It comes in a variety of colors including red, white, orange and purple. Anthurium likes to be dry, so let it go bone dry before watering. Fertilize every so often, especially when blooming. These plants do not like direct sunlight and can be repotted every three to five years.
HOPE PEPEROMIA:
This cascading plant is gaining popularity due to its succulent-like leaves and also because it is fairly easy to care for. The Hope Peperomia likes medium to bright direct sunlight. It does well as a tabletop plant or a hanging plant. Watering is only needed one time a month regardless of plant size.
“Anytime you bring a plant into a home or work environment, it’s going to make you feel better. It is going to beautify the space in a way that art cannot, and they also have the added benefit of purifying the air.”
This is a slow-growing variety that is architectural and compact. This plant is a great statement piece and looks great in an entryway or by a chair. There are a lot of varieties and colors of the Dracaena. They are very resilient in low light and are great for an office space with little or no light. They like to stay on the dry side, so they like to be watered when they are about ½ to ¾ of the way dry. When watering, give it a good soak. Protip: A moisture meter can be purchased and used to determine how dry your plant is to help determine when it is time to water again.
