MOMENTS IN TIME

MATERNITY

CELEBRATIONS

At Stauffer Funeral Homes, it is our privilege to care for veterans, first responders, and their families. We are deeply grateful for the sacrifices of these hometown heroes and remain committed to honoring their service to both our country and community. When you need us, our team is here to support and care for your hometown hero— because remembrance matters.

The Women's Edition

Give yourself a round of applause. You made it through another Maryland winter! Flowers are blooming, daylight is lingering and everything feels a bit lighter and brighter. I love the four seasons we experience here in Frederick but those cold, long, dark days of winter seem to get a tad more intense each year making spring all the more special.

It’s wild how seasons in nature mirror the rhythms of our own lives—moments of flourishing, quiet reflection and eventual renewal. Just as winter gives way to spring, our challenges give way to new growth, reminding us that change is constant and each season holds its own lessons.

What have you been learning lately? Are you feeling encouraged and rejuvenated or would some fresh inspiration serve you well?

We’re glad you’re here and hope the stories ahead lift your spirits. We’re delighted to highlight women who have been pillars in this growing community as well as introduce you to new faces coming onto the scene. There are ladies to learn from, milestones to celebrate, books to read, flowers to arrange, drinks to mix and more.

While we always encourage our readers to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our community. They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their bold leadership and silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.

I encourage you to take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with women in your life who would be blessed to hear from you. It only takes a moment to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much they are loved and valued.

Here’s to the women. We see you, we thank you, we celebrate you!

SHE’S A FORCE of Nature

CELEBRATING FIVE WOMEN WHO DEEPLY INSPIRE, LEAD AND EMPOWER THOSE AROUND THEM

ARTICLE BY SIERRA MOORE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNIFER ROSARIA FILM & PHOTOGRAPHY, KRISTI LYNN PHOTOGRAPHY

Some women don’t just navigate the world—they shape it. They push forward with unstoppable energy, turning challenges into opportunities and inspiring those around them. Like the elements—bold as the wind, steady as the earth, radiant as the sun and ever-growing—these five women lead with strength, respect and a stable commitment to those they serve. They are leaders, innovators and changemakers.  They are a force of nature.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE IN ONE SENTENCE?

“In response to the dynamic challenges that I face, I would describe my leadership style as both servant and transformational.”

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO STEP INTO LEADERSHIP?

“Growing up, I watched my father, a businessman, and my late mother, an educator, lead and inspire their teams with dedication and purpose. I admired their work ethic, growth and achievements. It became clear to me that their success stemmed from strong motivation and a commitment to empowering others. This realization inspired me to pursue business ownership myself.”

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST LESSON?

“My biggest lesson has been to have the right attitude in the face of constant change and a willingness to learn from failures.”

WHAT VALUES SHAPE YOUR BUSINESS CULTURE AND HOW DO YOU ENSURE THEY REMAIN AT THE HEART OF YOUR WORK?

“At Frederick Fashion Boutique, our mission is simple: to help our clients express their uniqueness through high-quality, curated fashion choices. Our business culture is deeply customer-focused, built on a commitment to diversity, collaboration and community engagement. We uphold these values with open communication, encouraging teamwork and prioritizing continuous learning.”

WHAT IS YOUR LEADERSHIP “SUPERPOWER”?

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE NEXT GENERATION OF WOMEN STEPPING INTO LEADERSHIP ROLES?

“Stay focused, resilient and to keep a calm head in the pursuit of your dreams.”

IF YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE WERE REPRESENTED BY A FLOWER, WHICH ONE WOULD IT BE?

“My journey into leadership was a natural progression, especially when I started Sage Cakery. In the beginning, I handled all aspects of the business which quickly taught me the critical role of delegation. The most significant lesson I’ve learned? Effective leadership goes beyond having a vision—it’s about inspiring your team and working together to turn that vision into reality.”

“Our culture at Sage Cakery is built on quality, teamwork, integrity and inclusivity. We maintain these values by producing exceptional products, fostering open communication and nurturing a collaborative environment.”

WHAT IS YOUR LEADERSHIP ‘SUPERPOWER’?

This approach not only invites innovation, but also creates a supportive environment where everyone is empowered to contribute openly.”

CAN YOU SHARE A TOUGH LEADERSHIP DECISION YOU MADE?

HOW DO YOU BALANCE STRONG LEADERSHIP WITH EMPATHY?

“I believe true strength in leadership comes from being both a guide and a fellow traveler. I stand shoulder-to-shoulder with my team, ready to face any challenges together.”

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE IN ONE SENTENCE?

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO STEP INTO LEADERSHIP AND WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST LESSON?

WHAT IS YOUR LEADERSHIP “SUPERPOWER”?

“I approach every situation with a solutions-oriented mindset, a deep commitment to understanding others and a genuine care for resolving challenges in a way that benefits everyone involved. In addition, I am always willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done—no excuses.”

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO FUTURE WOMEN LEADERS?

“Stay humble, be grateful each day for the gifts that are given and appreciate those around you, always.”

IF YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE WERE A FLOWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

“A daisy—symbolizing loyalty, faith and cheerfulness—holds special meaning for me. My oldest son, Brooks, wrote a heartfelt poem for me as a Mother’s Day gift in high school, comparing me to a daisy—a memory I cherish deeply.”

WHAT DRIVES YOUR LEADERSHIP AND COMMITMENT TO PHILANTHROPY?

“Faith has always been my foundation. Joe and I built our lives on it, navigating the highs and lows of 100% commission-based careers while raising our family. Matthew 17:20 reminds me that with faith, anything is possible. From real estate and nonprofit work to giving back through TGP Gives, helping others has always been a priority. Early in our marriage, we were very tight budget wise, but my heart ached for those in need. My solution was to bake banana bread and pass them out on the streets of DC,  which then led to the founding of our first nonprofit, CTT, nearly 40 years ago. Since then, we’ve launched initiatives like Thanks4Giving and the Unity Campaign of Frederick County, raising over $2 million for local nonprofits. During COVID, we supported struggling businesses by giving away $25,000 in gift cards and hosting community events. Today, TGP Gives continues that mission through acts of kindness, like installing Frederick’s first disc golf course. Giving back isn’t just something I do—it’s who I am.”

THE JOURNEY OF THE LAW OFFICE OF LENA A. CLARK, LLC

A Decade of Growth

ARTICLE BY LENA A. CLARK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSICA LATOS
“Growth required stepping outside my comfort zone and adapting to challenges.”

Celebrating and reflecting on ten years in business, Lena Clark shares the story behind her law firm’s beginnings, challenges and milestones that have shaped its growth and the lessons she has learned along the way.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR OWN LAW FIRM, AND HOW HAS YOUR VISION EVOLVED OVER TIME?

“My husband played a big role in the beginning. Thirteen years ago, early in our relationship, he shared his five-year plan with someone: I would start a law firm and he would help by creating the website. At the time, I thought it was a naïve idea—it seemed nearly impossible, but three years later, without me even planning for it, he built the website and The Law Office of Lena A. Clark was born.”

YOUR FIRM HAS GROWN FROM A SOLO PRACTICE TO A THRIVING TEAM. WHAT KEY MOMENTS OR DECISIONS CONTRIBUTED TO THAT GROWTH?

“I had to learn to make uncomfortable decisions quickly. Not every choice was perfect, but some proved to be great in the long run. Growth required stepping outside my comfort zone and adapting to challenges.”

AS YOUR FIRM EXPANDED, WHAT QUALITIES DID YOU PRIORITIZE WHEN HIRING TEAM MEMBERS?

“We focus on hiring smart, driven and positive people who fit our office culture. We move fast and have a lot of systems in place. While certain skills can be taught, attitude and adaptability are qualities we value most. Afterall, you can’t teach the attitude.”

MANY BUSINESS OWNERS STRUGGLE WITH DELEGATION. HOW DID YOU TRANSITION FROM DOING EVERYTHING YOURSELF TO TRUSTING A TEAM?

“The key was developing and documenting checklists, manuals and systems. Once those were in place, I was able to hire and train competent, intelligent and passionate people to lead different areas of the firm.”

HOW HAS GROWING YOUR TEAM IMPROVED THE WAY YOU SERVE CLIENTS?

“Our expansion has allowed us to create specialized departments, making our processes more efficient. We now have:

• A four-person Estate Planning team with two attorneys

• A two-person Intake and Client Communication department

• Three dedicated Probate employees

• A Marketing/IT specialist I remain actively involved in the Probate department while also running the firm. We are always looking to grow—if you know an experienced Probate attorney looking to lead an amazing team, send them our way!”

ESTATE PLANNING AND PROBATE LAW ARE DEEPLY PERSONAL. WHAT SETS YOUR FIRM APART IN TERMS OF CLIENT EXPERIENCE?

“We strive to make Estate Planning and Probate as easy and stress-free as possible. Many people hesitate to reach out because they assume the process is overwhelming and final. In reality, while there are important details to consider, most decisions don’t even end up in the documents. Ultimately, Estate Planning comes down to two key things: choosing the people you trust to handle your affairs and deciding who you want to provide for. We guide clients through these choices in a clear and supportive way.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE LAW OFFICE OF LENA A. CLARK? ANY EXCITING PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

“We moved into our “forever” office space over nine years ago, but at the beginning of this year, we started to outgrow it. To accommodate our growth, we’ve secured additional space nearby. All client-facing activities will remain in Suite 11.

Additionally, despite having eleven full-time employees, we’ve never had a dedicated Operations Manager—until now. We are currently in the process of hiring for this role, which will be a major step in streamlining and strengthening our firm’s operations.”  LenaClarkLegal.com

VISION TAKES ROOT AS A YOUNG WOMAN TRANSFORMS HER FATHER’S TREE CARE LEGACY INTO AN ENVIRONMENTAL MISSION

Nature’s

Next Gen

“Every little girl wants to be just like their father. I just took it a bit more literally than most.”

Growing up watching her father, Jeremiah, build A1 Tree Pros, Micayla gained more than just business acumen—she developed a deep passion for plant care and an understanding of how it continues to scientifically evolve.

“Most people think tree services are all about removal,” Micayla explains. “But we would much rather save a tree than remove one. It’s twofold— saving a tree is oftentimes much cheaper than removing one. In fact, 99% of the time, this is the more affordable option.”

Micayla isn’t simply stepping into her father’s shoes—she’s forging her own path and fulfilling a legacy that runs as deep as the roots of the trees and plants she protects. She is reshaping traditional tree care into cutting-edge plant healthcare, embracing A1 Tree Pros’ tagline, “Health & Hugs to Trees & Shrubs.” This philosophy underscores a nurturing approach to nature, emphasizing plant well-being through expert care and a simple, easy-to-follow way to foster their vitality and growth.

CONTINUED >

Micayla’s passion for plant care led her to The University of Maryland, College Park Institute of Applied Agriculture, where she’s completing her degree in Ornamental Horticulture. As a Certified Professional Horticulturist (CPH) graduating with her degree this May, Micayla brings a rare combination: extensive scientific knowledge paired with hands-on experience.

“Understanding plant disease at the cellular level isn’t just academic knowledge. It’s about giving trees their best chance at survival through every season and challenge,” Micayla explains.

In an industry traditionally dominated by men, Micayla has had her fair share of challenges, but she’s learned to let expertise speak louder than anything.

“Don’t overthink it” is something she lives by and advises other women entering male-dominated fields.

“Show up and show people that you know what you’re talking about. You’ll run into people who may not give you the respect firsthand, but there’s always someone else who would rather offer you encouragement than bring you down.”

Her father, Jeremiah, beams with pride commenting on Micayla’s leadership. “She doesn’t just solve problems,” he says. “She prevents them. She finds solutions where others see obstacles and it’s incredibly rewarding to watch her embrace this mindset. It’s a much healthier way to see the world.”

Micayla’s love for plants started early. In high school, she applied for an FFA SAE grant, receiving $1,000 to fund her own agricultural experience. With the grant, she grew and sold perennials for her school’s annual greenhouse sale, eventually expanding her project by repurposing a greenhouse from a local tractor supply store. Over two years, she reinvested her profits, nurturing plants even over winter and summer breaks. This dedication to plant care shaped her hands-on approach to business today.

Looking to the future, Micayla’s vision extends beyond tree services. “My goal for A1 Tree Pros is to branch further into plant healthcare,” she explains. “It’s important to me that generations to come can experience the natural beauty we enjoy today.”

Micayla is nurturing a legacy of environmental consciousness, one that promises to keep growing for generations to come. Under her leadership, A1 Tree Pros has become more than a service provider. It is becoming a guardian of our green future, ensuring that the shade and beauty we enjoy today is the same we will enjoy tomorrow.

MICAYLA SHARES THREE VITAL TIPS FOR ENSURING HEALTHY TREES AND SHRUBS:

• Monitor for cross branching: Preventing branches from rubbing against each other will avoid wounds that invite disease and pests.

• Prune wisely: Annual pruning promotes better airflow, sunlight penetration and overall plant health.

• Avoid over-mulching: Mulch to shade and shelter, but do not suffocate the tree’s base with too much mulch. With vision and dedication, Micayla is proving that plant and tree care is about more than maintenance— it’s about cultivating a healthier, greener future.

REJOICING WITH Widows Among Us

AN HONEST CONVERSATION ON GRIEF, RESILIENCE & RENEWAL

There’s nothing like staggering statistics to make people aware of how prevalent an issue is or how much we need to discuss a topic. Statistics from AARP cite that an estimated (and staggering) 75% of married women will become widows. Yet beyond the statistics are real people (mothers, sisters, friends, co-workers, neighbors and perhaps you) who’ve navigated the journey through death and grief. And while that process can include pain and sadness, there can also be bonding, laughter, lessons, love and new lives. These many facets of widowhood are captured in the timely new book, “Widows Among Us: Stories and Insights,” by Karen S. Justice, MBA, Karen R. Smith-Racicot, CLC, and Rebecca K. LaChance, PhD.

While these three amazing, resilient, funny and empathetic women had different paths to widowhood (ranging from sudden death to a three-year journey), they wrote a book that connects with those experiencing various types of losses, captivates audiences with their stories, helps readers process or prepare for loss and provides strategies for anyone supporting a grieving person. The book’s title emerged from Deuteronomy 16:11 in the Bible, which speaks of rejoicing with the widows among us. When the three authors gathered to discuss their book, they held back tears, shared laughter and beautifully reflected the stories, insights and practical advice chronicled throughout its pages.

As “Widows Among Us” states: “Today, widowhood is still a sensitive and frequently neglected subject. This book aims to bring this important topic into the spotlight by highlighting and addressing its unique and often disregarded aspects.” The book, both inspirational and educational, is an easy read and a perfect gift. Rather than restating its contents, what follows are a few questions posed to the authors, providing additional insight into their experiences and their work.

WHAT’S BEEN THE HARDEST PART OF YOUR JOURNEY AS A WIDOW?

Reflecting on her three-year journey from her husband’s pancreatic cancer diagnosis to his passing, Karen Justice spoke of managing multiple emotions while trying to be strong for her partner. At times, she was overwhelmed with the pain of knowing she was going to be a widow. Because she and her husband, John, didn’t have biological children together, she now sees herself as an “orphaned elder,” another difficult aspect of widowhood for her.

Karen Smith-Racicot spoke of having to redefine herself, work through past trauma and become a new person. Trauma was also a theme for Dr. Rebecca LaChance, who recalled going into an existential crisis. She noted, “I literally had a dark night of the soul, and I realized that Frank’s death and my coming out of it was really a spiritual reckoning. I had to do some in-depth work about childhood trauma.”

WHAT’S ONE GOOD THING (PERHAPS

SOMETHING YOU LEARNED, A SKILL OR RELATIONSHIP YOU DEVELOPED) THAT HAS HAPPENED AS A RESULT OF YOUR JOURNEY?

Karen Smith-Racicot noted that her loss “just catapulted me out of my comfort zone, and from that has come a new life. I’ve remarried, I’ve got two wonderful stepkids and seven grandkids. I love the life that I have right now. I really do, but it’s very different from the life I would have had with Sam.” While it has taken time and trials, each woman has rebuilt her life. They all spoke of the joy they have in their current lives (especially their ability to travel and the bond they now share). Yet they try to be intentional about not feeling guilty for experiencing such happiness. They acknowledged that it was okay to love and miss their deceased spouses while simultaneously enjoying their new lives.

WHY SHOULD PEOPLE READ THIS BOOK?

The women wholeheartedly agreed that they’ve written a “feel-good book” full of hope and resilience. They acknowledge that parts are sad and may evoke emotions, but readers have noted cathartic responses to the authors’ stories. Both men and women have said they could not put the book down.

The authors take pride in the book’s beauty, including the beauty of its message. Dr. Rebecca LaChance spoke of the kintsugi pot as a metaphor for

“We continue to make the point that no widow’s grief is like another widow’s grief.”

the book. “The Japanese philosophy of kintsugi is that when something is broken, you repair it with precious metals so that it’s still usable again and beautiful. The philosophy of kintsugi is the philosophy of life: we get broken, but we can honor that brokenness and put it back together in beauty and function.”

According to Karen Smith-Racicot, “this book is for everybody. It is not just for widows. It is three stories of hope and resilience.” She also notes that “it talks about being prepared beforehand, which is super important.”

Before the conversation ended, Karen Justice noted: “Our stories are very different, and yet through each of them, there is enough commonality. We continue to make the point that no widow’s grief is like another widow’s grief. So many factors influence the relationship, her personality, the circumstances, etc., that we try to emphasize that no one should judge someone on how they grieve. That’s one of our key takeaways.”

She closed by sharing one of her favorite sayings, “life is lived forward, but it’s understood backward.” “Widows Among Us” allows the authors to look back and share what they now understand about life as they “live forward,” moving from grief to growth.

From Stem To Vase:

TRANSFORMING FLORALS INTO ART

Flowers have a rich history of symbolic meanings. As far back as the 19th century, they were used to convey secret messages. Stories throughout history recount how flowers were used to send hidden messages between people. French publishers began producing flower dictionaries that cataloged the many floral codes that had been gathered over time. Some of these meanings were linked to the flower’s root name, often derived from mythology, while others were drawn from the flowers themselves. The colors, medicinal properties, and even the superstitions

associated with these flowers all contributed to the creation of this secret language.

In addition to their symbolic significance, flowers bring natural beauty to any interior, enhancing spaces with their color, texture, and mood-boosting qualities. Floral arrangements not only create a cozy atmosphere but also infuse a room with personality, elevating the overall ambiance. There are multiple ways to creatively integrate florals into your home, and whether using fresh or artificial flowers, creative displays can make quite the statement piece.

Flower Frogs

Using a frog to display flowers creates a minimalist yet elegant look that highlights the individuality of each bloom. It helps the stems stay in place. To set it up, place the frog on your chosen display base, whether it’s a vase, bowl, platter, or any container you prefer. Then, simply insert the flower stems by gently pressing them into the prongs. Tip: Flowers with sturdy stems and a lighter top work best in a frog, as delicate blooms tend to lose their shape more quickly.

Florals and Fruit

“Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.”

Add an extra burst of color and texture to your floral arrangement by layering fruit around the edges of your vase. To achieve this, place a smaller vase inside a larger one, ensuring the flowers stay contained in the inner vase to preserve their shape. Fill the surrounding space with water and then arrange sliced fruit along the vase’s outer sides. For a fresh touch, add ice cubes to keetp the fruit looking vibrant longer and to hold them in place. Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.

Hanging Florals

For a dramatic effect, try creating a hanging floral display. Floral cones are available for this style, or you can craft your own for a more personalized, organic look. The contrast between long-stemmed white flowers and a dark wall creates a striking visual impact.

No matter how you choose to display them, flowers are a wonderful addition to any room. They boost mood, improve air quality, spark creativity, and bring a decorative charm to any space.
