Dani Gurrie
Good Morning, Frederick!
Dani Gurrie recently launched “Good Morning, Frederick!”, a morning show that people can access through YouTube and EVERYTHING FREDERICK on Facebook. This innovative and fresh take on the people and places of Frederick is quickly gaining a loyal following and loads of support. We had a chance to get to know more about Dani’s background and her love and passion for all things Frederick. (Be sure to subscribe to Everything Frederick LIVE! on YouTube to get access!)
How long have you lived in Frederick? Where did you attend school?
We moved to Frederick in March of 1977. I was in 4th grade and transferred into Yellow Springs Elementary where I stayed through 6th grade. Then I went to TJ High School where I graduated in 1985. (GO PATRIOTS!) After being away for many years, I moved back to Frederick in 2007.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.
I am the oldest of six kids (result of two blended families). I didn’t finish college; instead, I went to Frederick Community College (FCC) for about a year and a half, then started working. At the time I thought, “I’m making money so I’m good.” I would have most definitely finished at least my AA degree if I were to do it all again (I think).
I started working in radio in 1986: Z104 in Frederick (sales and promotions), 98ROCK in Baltimore (promotions assistant and promotions
director), then eventually RockMix 103.7 in San Diego (promotions director). In 1995, I learned the basics of graphic design and really fell more in love with marketing. I took a job in 1998 as a tour guide with Contiki, and I spent two years traveling throughout the US—this is where I met my husband. He was on the tour with his sister and her friend!
My husband, Ash, and I got married in July 2000, at Coffman Chapel (Hood College) and we were one of the first wedding receptions booked at the Delaplaine! We have two children: Cooper and Brodie.
What inspired you to pursue your career in media and marketing?
It’s interesting—when I moved to Australia in 2000, I had the hardest time getting a job. It was so strange as I had never been unemployed EVER (since the day before I was 16)...and the only interview and offer I received was for Inside Sales. I was mortified, but took the job. Once I made my first sale, I didn’t look back. I had finally figured out how to be successful. I realized it wasn’t at all about me or what I was selling; it was about the client. Once I started asking “How can I help you?” everything changed. Integrity, honesty and sincerity were (and still are) my greatest assets; especially those times when I told a client that I wouldn’t sell them because it didn’t make sense. I was the top salesperson for five years in a row.

“I hope that by giving local businesses a platform, I can help them to continue to contribute to our community.”
ARTICLE BY KRISTEN WOJDAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNIFER ROSARIA FILM & PHOTOGRAPHY

“I still ask that question daily—to everyone—how can I help you?”
I still ask that question daily—to everyone—how can I help you? Of course, the answer is different for each person / company / organization I ask. I love the challenge of finding the best solution, not necessarily the solution I am offering.
So to answer your question: this career found me! It’s the culmination of every job I’ve ever held, from waitressing, to bartending, to customer service, to promotions, to graphic design.
How and why did you create “Good Morning, Frederick”?
When I resigned from my job in radio, I knew that I still wanted to help businesses in Frederick. Plus, I love this town! So, I thought, “Why not? Let me create a place that people can go to connect with Frederick on a more personal level.” The beauty is that I have no restrictions placed on me at all. This show can be whatever the viewers want it to be.
How do you define success?
I would define success not by material things but by the sense of fulfillment in what I am doing. Ultimately, success is about living a life closely aligned with my core values, feeling content with the progress and knowing that I am making a positive contribution to the world around me.
What advice would you give someone who wants to pursue a career in media and marketing?
Do it! But you don’t have to wait for the college degree or perfect job—start with yourself.
Create YOUR brand with a website and social media. Figure out what works and what people respond to. Continue to craft and update with the latest technology. Network with local business people and marketing professionals. LISTEN and LEARN all you can from them. Implement what you’ve learned. Decide what’s great and decide what could be improved.
Then find a small business and take what you’ve learned to help them—maybe free at first—or, maybe, for a percent of the growth you help them to achieve. Once you’ve done that, you ARE a marketing professional!
Can you share any collaborations you’re excited about?
My life is a collaboration right now (in the best of ways). When I was younger and even when I had my first business, Tots2Tweens, I shied away from collaborations because I was insecure about my company’s value. Now, I realize that we are stronger when we work together. There is enough for all of us to be successful. I am always open to and interested in collaborations.
What is an inspiring quote that keeps you motivated ?
I saw this on social media once and look at it often: “Success is not for the lazy. It’s for those who hustle, who grind and who refuse to quit until they’ve achieved their dreams.”
What’s the most rewarding aspect of your work?
The most rewarding part of what I do is helping who I can and giving back. I enjoy being able to assist an organization to reach their milestones and joining together with other businesses to make our community stronger and better.
What’s the most challenging aspect of your work?
Trying to keep up! I’m not so young anymore, so being a one woman show currently can be exhausting. But it’s exhaustion in the best way, if that’s possible.
When I decided to do this show, I had no idea how to edit video or run a stream. My husband had always been the producer behind the scenes pushing buttons and making things “go” and making me look great in the process. My brother has always been the video editor. He’s so creative and good. I was literally begging my brother to come to Maryland from Ohio the week before the show to help me and he said, “You’re good, you’ve got this. The first few will be bad, but by the 10th, you’ll be fine.” And he was right! I still have tons to learn and I can improve a lot, but for what I’m doing right now, it seems to work!
What impact do you hope to make through your work?
I hope that by giving local businesses a platform, I can help them to continue to contribute to our community. I hope that people outside of Frederick take a look at all the great things we’re doing here and decide to do it for their communities as well.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?
Whatever business idea (or hobby or side hustle) you’re thinking about, and contemplating, and re-thinking…Just do it! It will never be perfect. Better to start now and learn on the go then to never get going because of a “failure to launch.”
The famous Gary V. says to “Fail Faster.” Everyone is going to fail on some level. The faster you fail, the more you learn. What I take from this is that I spent too much time thinking about the little things in my previous business. I just go with my gut now. Does it always pay off? NO! But at least I’ve learned that lesson quickly and can adjust to try something else.
What would you do differently?
Nothing. Even though there were things that at the time I regretted, there are lessons in everything. And God always has a plan.
What do you love about Frederick?
Well, for one, it’s home! I’ve lived in Baltimore, San Diego and Melbourne, Australia; and there is no place like Frederick. I don’t know how to describe it—it truly is just home.

WHAT TO KNOW WHEN BOOKING AN AIRBNB
Melissa Lentz, Owner of Bayside Concierge, Shares Seven Suggestions Everyone Should Know
ARTICLE BY MELISSA LENTZ
Accommodations are an integral part of travel, and opting for services like Airbnb offers a distinctive experience. Unlike traditional hotels, Airbnbs offer individualized stays crafted with care by hosts, promising a unique touch to your journey.
Understanding that each Airbnb property is distinct, with standards varying from one place to another, is crucial. For instance, while one property may welcome all pets, another might only allow documented service animals. Therefore, thoroughly reviewing the listing is imperative.
Though some descriptions may be extensive, essential details might elude you if you're unsure where to look. To ensure compliance and awareness of crucial aspects, here's a guide to scrutinizing every Airbnb listing, as recommended by hosts and frequent guests:
REVIEWS UNVEIL INSIGHTS
The consensus among experts is to examine reviews from previous guests. While Airbnb provides a star rating for each property based on past evaluations, delving into guests' feedback offers deeper insights. Look for consistency in reviews; consistent complaints might indicate recurring issues like a malfunctioning shower or AC. Reviews often reveal positive aspects not listed by the host, such as scenic views or proximity to local attractions.

WIFI RELIABILITY
The availability and strength of WiFi can vary. While some guests might only need basic Internet for social media browsing, others may require robust connectivity for work or streaming. Confirming WiFi availability and strength for your needs is essential, as not all properties offer reliable Internet access.

PRIVACY CONCERNS
Airbnb has strict rules regarding surveillance cameras on the property. While outdoor cameras are common and permitted, indoor cameras in private spaces like bedrooms and bathrooms are prohibited. Guests should ensure transparency regarding camera usage for safety and privacy.

KITCHEN FACILITIES
Access to cooking facilities varies across Airbnbs. Whole-house rentals typically offer full kitchens, but shared accommodations may provide limited kitchen access. Checking the kitchen amenities beforehand prevents surprises like missing cookware or appliances.

CANCELLATION POLICIES
Understanding the cancellation policy is crucial to avoid financial loss, especially during unforeseen circumstances like the COVID-19 pandemic. Each Airbnb owner sets their refund policy, ranging from flexible to non-refundable options.
PARKING ARRANGEMENTS
Parking arrangements, especially in urban areas, require attention. Street parking regulations, availability of parking lots and additional costs should be considered to avoid inconvenience and extra expenses.

7
PROPERTY-SPECIFIC RULES
Unlike standardized hotel policies, each Airbnb has unique rules outlined in the listing. Familiarizing yourself with these rules, such as quiet hours or additional charges, ensures a smooth stay and prevents misunderstandings with the host.
By conducting thorough research, guests can confidently select an Airbnb property that aligns with their preferences and enjoy the distinct experience it offers.

FAC strives to make the Arts accessible for all, which is why most of their events are funded by donations.
Did you know that FAC’s Sky Stage is a pre-Revolutionary War building? It was damaged by a major fire in 2010, and now has no roof. The centerpiece of FAC’s Sky Stage is a digitally-designed, two-story sculpture with ribbons of drought-resistant plants that wind through a wooden lattice and the building’s doors and windows. It was designed by artist Heather Theresa Clark (holds a Master’s Degree from MIT). With the help of the Frederick Arts Council, it has been transformed into an open-air theater. The Frederick Keys
Did you know that the Frederick Keys baseball team is named for the “Star-Spangled Banner” writer Francis Scott Key, a native of Frederick County? Our home team continues to provide a classic American baseball experience every summer; playing 40 regular season home games, this is one of the hottest tickets in town throughout the summer months!
In addition to enjoying a competitive baseball game, there is so much fun, affordable entertainment to experience with your family and friends at the Keys games! When you arrive at the stadium, enjoy free parking. Delicious food and craft beer from local breweries (i.e. Olde Mother, Brewer’s Alley, Idiom and Monocacy Brewing) is available. The FunZone, which includes a carousel, bounce house, inflatable slide and fun games, is a favorite among the younger fans.
Special traditions include: kids run the bases after every game, Sunday Funday (warm-up on the field with the team before the games on Sundays) and the best fireworks in Frederick on Friday and Saturday evenings.
In addition, there are many promotions throughout the season that include special theme nights and team jerseys that are designed to raise awareness and donations for several local charities.
Tickets are available online and at the gate. Take me out to the ballgame…all summer long!

BAJA FOR AFICIONADOS
Mexico, Mediterranean Microclimate, Merlot and More in Valle de Guadalupe

Few people would combine the words Mexico and wine district. Yet, a visit to the Valle de Guadalupe will change minds. This dry, boulder-strewn valley is blessed with a Mediterranean microclimate. Here the grapes ripen quickly and the wines are typically bold and fruit-forward.
A long-ago sea bed, the soil varies from sand, to loam, granite and red-clay soil as the elevations change. Logically, the grapes also vary.
We tasted diverse varietal and blended wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Merlot, Malbec, Mourvedre, Nebbiolo, Syrah, Tempranillo and Chardonnay grapes. Keeping the roots of their ancestors, the Swiss-French family at Mogor Badan primarily uses Chasselas. The Paoloni family’s Villa Montefiori focuses on Montepulciano and Sangiovese. One hundred twenty wineries offer a lot of diversity.

The experience many of the winemakers gained while working in Napa and Sonoma paid off. We sampled their creations at Xecue, Bruma, Vina de Frannes, Magoni, Cava Maciel, Villa Montefiori and Mogor Badan. Choosing a favorite was difficult. As the Spanish say, “The best wine is that which is shared with friends.”
Like Valle’s wine and architecture, the foods blend with the environment. Michelin-star chefs and those who worked with them have migrated to Valle de Guadalupe to open small, stellar restaurants that surprise even sophisticated palates.
At Fauna, #5 on the list of 50 Best Restaurants in Latin America for 2023, the long communal tables are filled with originality and creativity. Chef David Castro Hussong focuses on local products. “Our concept is to apologize before showing the menu,” he says, “because, being experimental, we never know what we will end up cooking. It's the moment when we start having fun, playing with the ingredients.”

Executive Chef Oscar Torres combine tradition, creativity and performance in their food and service. Their degustación menu of four, six or eight courses is memory-making.
On the La Liste France as #276 in the World’s top 500, Deckman’s specializes in grilled foods. However, their fresh Baja oysters are equally special. Entering the grounds accented by beautiful floral and botanical arrangements makes you never want to leave. Whether you enjoy food, wine or both, Valle de Guadalupe will delight you.

ENJOYING SUMMER
In the moments between fishing in our pond and swimming in the pool, our family will celebrate birthdays and have outdoor parties. True to form, I love creating something traditional in an untraditional way. My beach ball garland is a spin-off of the traditional balloon garland. Everyone uses balloon garlands… so let’s make one out of beach balls instead! Everyone serves a birthday cake… how about one carved out of a watermelon for a crazy twist?? I hope you join me in the making of these fun additions to a party!
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEANN PARKER
Beach Ball Garland
Have you ever noticed that when blown up, beach balls have a little plastic loop that forms where they are blown up and sealed? It makes for the perfect place to string twine through and use as an outdoor “balloon” garland! String it up, add some extra beach balls to the pool or yard and you have all the party decorations you need!
Materials
• 2 packs of assorted sized beach balls (assorted 20”, 16” and 12” for a total of 36)
• 1 pack of mini beach balls (5” sized, total of 25)
• Thin rope or twine
• Air pump
Instructions
1. Using an air pump, blow up all the beach balls... It takes a while!
2. Arrange inflated beach balls in a line on the ground, alternating sizes as you go.
3. Starting on one end, thread your string or twine through the blow loop of each beach ball until you reach the end.
4. Tie each end of your beach ball garland to a post or tack to a wall.
Watermelon Cake
A cake that you could eat for breakfast! Made only of fruit and (if you want to go real crazy) some fresh mint and whipped cream too. A few years ago we started making watermelon cakes for our summer birthday celebrations due to one of our little ones suffering from food allergies. In order to make a cake that even she could enjoy, the watermelon cake was born in our lives. Even if you don’t have family or guests with food allergies, this cake is a thriller and loved by all!
Ingredients
• 2 large watermelons
• Assortment of berries and fruit
• 4 wooden skewers
• Toothpicks
• Whipped cream (optional)
• Fresh mint (optional)
Instructions
1. Prep both watermelons by cutting off the rinds and sculpting to create a cylinder shape with a flat top and bottom. Make the bottom cylinder bigger and the top cylinder slightly smaller.
2. Stack your smaller watermelon on top of the larger using wooden skewers to support the center.
3. Use assorted berries and fruit to decorate the outside of your watermelon cake. For the sides of the cake, use toothpicks to help the berries stay in place.
4. Serve alone or with a dollop of homemade whipped cream.
“I love creating something traditional in an untraditional way.”

Each month a portion of the proceeds from the designated tap is donated to a local Frederick charity of the month. The more you pour, the greater the donation. Frederick-Social.com
