DON’T LET THE STATE DECIDE: WHY YOU NEED AN ESTATE PLAN.

If you don’t have an estate plan or an up-to-date estate plan, state law—not you—will decide what happens to your money and property.

A 2025 Caring.com survey revealed that 3 in 4 Americans are likely to die without a will (intestate), meaning their assets may end up unidentified, unclaimed, or distributed by default laws that may not align with their wishes. Without a plan, your stepchildren may receive nothing. Long-term partners have no legal claim to your estate. Close friends or charities? They’ll be left out unless named specifically. And if you have minor children, the court—not you—will choose their guardian.

• Decide Who Inherits What

• Name Guardians For Your Children

A Current, Customized Estate Plan Puts You In Control. It Allows You To:

• Include Stepchildren, Friends, And Charitable Causes

• Avoid Probate With Tools Like Trusts

You’ve worked hard to build your legacy. Don’t let the government decide how it ends. Whether you need a basic will or a comprehensive trust-based plan, we’re here to help you protect what matters most. Call us to create or update your estate plan today.

Style Redefined

As summer fades and the cooler weather approaches, September invites us to turn the page—with style. In this issue, we celebrate not just what we wear, but how style shapes our confidence and personal expression.

Inside, you’ll find conversations with people who love to create, including designers, artists, and musicians. And speaking of musicians, check out our story on The Doobie Brothers, who have been creating music for more than 50 years, and who will be at FirstBank Amphitheater later this month.

We also travel to Puerto Rico for a sun-drenched getaway that pairs laid-back elegance with island sophistication, proving that style is more than just what comes from the runway.

Here’s to finding beauty in the details. We hope this issue helps you step into the fall season with a little extra flair.

Warmly,

Design, Detail, and Doing Life Together

BEFORE AFTER

When Kitchen Solvers owners Andy and Marty White walk into a kitchen, it’s more than a renovation. It’s a conversation built on experience, teamwork, and a whole lot of heart.

How do your personalities and backgrounds shape your remodeling approach?

Andy: My engineering career at General Motors was all about solving problems and that’s exactly what remodeling is. I engineer every square inch before we begin a project. Marty brings creativity and design finesse, so we balance each other out. We are focused on walking through a very specific process.

Marty: It’s true! When we meet with clients, it’s like a tennis match. We bounce ideas back and forth. Andy focuses on function and structure, and I handle layout and style. It’s a dynamic that makes clients feel heard and taken care of.

Can you share a remodeling moment that changed how a client lived in their space?

Andy: A Franklin couple had a cramped kitchen and laundry room. We re-imagined the layout, stacked appliances, added angled walls, and even shrunk the laundry room to create a better kitchen flow. Afterward, they told us it transformed how they entertained and lived.

Marty: That’s why I always ask, “How do YOU use your kitchen?” Whether you’re a baker, a chef, or rely on takeout, we tailor the space to your lifestyle and not just Pinterest aesthetics.

How do your passions outside of work shape client relationships?

Andy: Our hobbies make us more relatable. I love learning about our clients and their families. It makes the job personal.

Marty: We’ve built real friendships through this business. We hug every client after we are done with their kitchen. We host, hang out, and support local businesses together. It’s not just about remodeling, it’s about building a community.

The Parker House on Main Delivers Franklin’s Most Thoughtful Take on Down-to-Earth Luxury

WHERE BEAUTY MEETS BELONGING

When you step through the doors of The Parker House on Main, you immediately know you’re somewhere different. The light is soft, the music feels handpicked for the moment, and the greeting is genuine. It doesn’t feel like just another high-end salon. It feels like coming home to a place designed with you in mind.

“At The Parker House on Main, our signature is down-to-earth luxury, a refined effortless look that speaks volumes without shouting,” said Samuel Allen, founder and creative director. “We’re known for delivering elevated, personalized service in a space that feels warm, genuine, and unpretentious.”

That balance of sophistication and soul is no accident. Samuel has built The Parker House into a destination for Williamson County’s tastemakers, creatives, professionals, and even celebrities, all drawn to the salon’s tailored approach and its sense of community.

“Our clientele are sophisticated experience seekers who value excellence in every detail,” Samuel said. “They expect and receive he very best in service, style, and talent. But more importantly, they feel seen, heard, and understood.”

Connection is at the heart of everything The Parker House offers, from its welcoming consultation process to the individualized services that follow. Whether you’re there for a transformative haircut, subtle color refinement, or a restorative scalp treatment, the experience is driven by intention and care.

“Our approach is deeply grounded in connection and craftsmanship,” Samuel said. “We take the time to understand a client’s lifestyle, personal style, and vision. We then translate that into a look that feels effortless and refined.”

That philosophy extends beyond hair. The salon recently began offering curated wellness experiences, including scalp therapy, skincare services with a licensed aesthetician, and access to a celebrity makeup artist. Master barbers are also on staff, offering beard trims and grooming services tailored to the modern gentleman, adding another layer of thoughtful luxury to the experience.

These offerings reflect Samuel’s commitment to evolving alongside his clients’ needs and staying ahead of the curve.

in our space,” Samuel said. “We’re deeply committed to supporting and uplifting our local beauty community because when one of us grows, we all rise.”

And this sense of community doesn’t end with the team or clients. It’s something you can feel in the day-to-day life of the salon.

“Our clients often stop by just to say hello,” Samuel noted. “Our product reps linger to chat. It’s beginning to feel more like a creative social club than a salon at times and we love that.”

The setting itself plays a significant role. Nestled in a charming home on Main Street, the salon is intentionally designed to feel inviting, creative, and relaxed.

“We didn’t originally start in a house, but it’s clear now that this space was meant for us,” Samuel said. “There’s something about it that perfectly captures the feeling we’re always striving to create: warm, welcoming, and intentionally curated.”

Details matter here, from the smell of freshly brewed organic coffee to the ever-evolving playlists and custom furnishings. The ambiance evolves right alongside the artistry happening within it, always with the client experience in mind.

And while style and atmosphere matter, so does support. Samuel has prioritized a team culture rooted in collaboration, not competition. Stylists often work together on clients, matching skill sets and energy to create the best possible results.

“The Parker House doesn’t just follow trends...we set them. Our team is constantly elevating the tone and direction of the hair world, both locally and beyond,” he said.

That spirit of growth isn’t limited to style, it’s part of the culture.

The Parker House is always seeking out exceptional talent, interviewing new artists who align with the salon’s vision and values. “We’re not just open to growth. We’re excited by it,” Samuel said. “Bringing in fresh energy and ideas keeps us inspired and evolving.”

Education is also a core pillar.

“We regularly host some of the best educators in the industry including colorists, stylists, skincare professionals, all right here

Owner, Samuel Allen

“If creating your perfect look means collaborating between two stylists? We’re all in,” Samuel said. “It’s not about ego, it’s about excellence.”

That same spirit of collaboration extends to the broader Franklin community. From partnering with local businesses to hosting creatives in their in-house photo studio, The Parker House is a hub for connection and creativity.

“What sets us apart is our deep commitment to collaboration and community,” Samuel said. “We believe that helping one another grow is the key to long-term success, and it brings a sense of excitement and purpose to everything we do.”

That mindset has made the salon not only a trusted beauty destination but also a place where new ideas take root and flourish. The team always has its finger on the pulse of what’s new, and is constantly exploring the latest products and innovations so you always receive the very best, thoughtfully chosen with care and intention.

“We’re deeply committed to supporting and uplifting our local beauty community because when one of us grows, we all rise.”

The Parker House on Main is a place where luxury feels natural, creativity is nurtured, and every client is treated like the unique individual they are. As Samuel put it, “Great hair is just the beginning.”

From soft, dimensional color to camera-ready cuts, every detail at The Parker House is carefully designed to reflect timeless elegance with a modern touch. But what clients remember most isn’t just how they looked walking out the door, it’s how they felt while they were there.

“We’re more than just a salon,” Samuel said. “We’re a creative space, a collaborative community, and a home for refined, down-to-earth luxury that’s always evolving.”

In a world that often equates luxury with exclusivity, The Parker House on Main offers something different: a luxury experience built on authenticity, connection, and care.

Haute & Happy: Where Style Meets Spirit

Bold Bags Redefining Luxury With Playful Charm And Vibrant Design

Bursting with personality, Haute & Happy bags are the creation of founder, Kelly Checchio, who believes fashion should spark joy. Created in 2019, Haute & Happy pieces are bright and bold, blending high-style with a playful twist. With vibrant colors and whimsical details that lend themselves to joy, these bags are more than accessories. Haute & Happy bags (and now hats!) are wearable celebrations of self-expression.

WHAT LED YOU TO START HAUTE & HAPPY BAGS?

Haute & Happy began from my lifelong love of accessories and people constantly stopping me to ask where I got my pieces. Over time, I realized I wanted to start my own company. It began with a few curated pieces of jewelry and it quickly became clear that I needed more than just fashion—I needed a creative outlet. I created hand-embellished bags. It became my way to share a little joy and sunshine through style.

PHOTOGRAPHY

DID YOU HAVE A BACKGROUND IN FASHION, DESIGN, OR BUSINESS BEFORE LAUNCHING THE BRAND?

I didn’t come from a traditional fashion or design background— just a real love for beautiful things and the confidence to follow that passion. I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands, being creative, and finding ways to make everyday pieces feel special. Haute & Happy grew organically from that.

WHAT WAS THE MOMENT OR INSPIRATION THAT SPARKED THE IDEA FOR HAUTE & HAPPY?

Being a full-time mom, I wanted to have an outlet that allowed me to have an identity outside my home and also show my children that anything you love you can make a reality. It clicked when I

realized how much joy I got, not just from wearing accessories, but from seeing others light up when they wore them too. I started experimenting with rhinestone brooches on straw bags, and once I saw the magic of sparkle meeting natural textures, I was hooked. It was the perfect mix of creative expression and fashion while creating my own work-life balance.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE AESTHETIC OF A HAUTE & HAPPY BAG?

Its major motto is “look haute, feel happy!” Every Haute & Happy bag is hand-embellished with care and creativity. I love that balance—the earthy texture paired with playful glamour. They also become very personalized.

Each boutique curates individually personalized bags which are unique to their customer. The southern stores love the bee, while my coastal boutiques swoon over a starfish or crab. Every bag also comes with a special blurb, a little story or sentiment about the brooches “spirit animal”  and the joy it can bring to your life. It’s all about carrying a purse with purpose. It's wearable art! For example, the clutch that has a bee brooch carries a tag with the sentiment: "THE BUMBLEBEE IS A MESSENGER, BRINGING THE SECRETS OF LIFE AND SERVICE. IF THIS IS YOUR POWER ANIMAL AND YOUR ENERGY IS SCATTERED, THE BUMBLEBEE CAN SHOW YOU HOW TO BECOME FOCUSED AGAIN. IF YOU ARE STUNG, THE MESSAGE HERE IS WAKE UP: FOLLOW THE RHYTHM OF YOUR OWN HEARTBEAT." XO, HAUTE & HAPPY

WHAT CRAFTSMANSHIP DETAILS SET YOUR BAGS APART FROM OTHERS ON THE MARKET?

Each bag is hand-embellished with beautiful brooches or other special sparkle, which makes it unique and personal. I work with lots of materials like straw and raffia, vegan leathers and natural Italian suede that I layer in color, sparkle, and texture.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU FACE AS A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER IN THE FASHION WORLD?

While the creative process is joyful and rewarding, building the brand hasn’t come without challenges. As a full-time mom, balancing motherhood with the hands-on demands of a small business requires constant juggling. There are a lot of late nights and multitasking moments. But it’s also taught me how to be resourceful, present, and to celebrate the little wins—whether it’s getting a new product out the door or simply getting reorders, I want each piece to feel personal and special, which takes time and care. I love designing and making, but it can be a lot. Still, knowing people are out there carrying and loving these pieces makes it all worth it.

ARE THERE ANY DESIGNS OR COLLECTIONS THAT HOLD SPECIAL MEANING FOR YOU PERSONALLY?

Absolutely. Some of the first designs I created were so personal— they reflected my mood, my hopes, or even memories from a trip. I still feel a connection to those early pieces, and any time someone picks one of them and tells me why it speaks to them, it’s such a full-circle moment.

“Once I saw the magic of sparkle meeting natural textures, I was hooked.”

WHAT’S YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE WHEN DREAMING UP A NEW PIECE OR COLLECTION?

Inspiration usually strikes when I least expect it—on a beach walk, through a reel on social media,  vintage pieces, or even seeing a certain color combo. I dream up ideas, collect brooches, and then start playing with materials until something clicks. It’s very hands-on and instinctive. Each bag really starts with a feeling I want to capture.

“I dream up ideas, collect brooches, and then start playing with materials until something clicks.”
Founder Kelly Checchio

WHAT’S NEXT FOR HAUTE & HAPPY?

I’m so excited about our new line of embellished straw hats. Like the bags, each one has its own unique vibe and personality. I’m also working on expanding into more in-person pop-ups and collaborations that reflect the brand. There’s lots more sparkle to come. I’m always dreaming up new ways to make summer sparkle, even if it’s just one accessory at a time. Still, the heart of Haute & Happy remains the same: spreading joy through thoughtful, beautiful design. “Look Haute, Feel Happy!” HauteAndHappy.com

BEYOND THE SUIT

RED EFINING MODERN ELEGANCE FOR MEN AND WOMEN IN NASHVILLE

Richards Bespoke Showroom

In a city that thrives on creativity and tradition in equal measure, a quiet revolution in personal style is underway. It is one that goes beyond the traditional suit and embraces elegance as a deeply individual experience.

Known for its mastery of custom menswear, Richards Bespoke is now turning heads with its inclusive expansion into womenswear. What began as a quiet, word-of-mouth offering has evolved into a bold statement on modern luxury. The shift wasn’t just strategic. It was personal.

“After realizing a few of our top clients were women, and that demand was growing, we knew it was time to fully commit,” said founder Stephen Richards, Jr. “But I also recognized I wasn’t the right person to lead that vision.” That’s when Holland Downs entered the picture, bringing both administrative savvy and an eye for female tailoring. Her interest in developing the women’s division sparked a transformative expansion, including a new Richards Shespoke showroom designed with a distinctly feminine aesthetic.

Far from simply adjusting patterns, Richards Bespoke crafts original garments for each individual. The process begins with a collaborative consultation and ends with a garment that fits not just the body, but the lifestyle and identity of its wearer.

“We don’t force trends. We guide our clients to find what works best for them,” said Richards. “If a client prefers a center-vent jacket because it’s familiar, we honor that. You shouldn’t wear something you’re not comfortable in.”

This ethos extends to both the wardrobe and the experience. Whether dressing for weddings, boardrooms, or weekend brunch, clients are guided through fabric selection, design, and measurement with the goal of creating pieces that are as versatile as they are stylish.

For men, that might mean crafting a handful of interchangeable garments that together form dozens of looks. “It’s not about selling more,” said Richards. “It’s about buying smarter and wearing more.” For women, the emphasis is on building a wardrobe that works in harmony with what’s already in their closet. “Some of my most versatile suits include skirts and vests that I can mix and match,” said Downs. “It’s about finding timeless pieces that fit your life.”

Modern elegance, as defined by Richards Bespoke, is a fusion of classic sophistication with personal flair. “We keep the tradition of dressing well alive, not out of formality, but because it makes you feel good and that confidence is contagious,” said Downs.

Richards Bespoke Showroom

It’s a philosophy that resonates deeply in Nashville, a city where old-world hospitality meets cutting-edge creativity. Richards Bespoke bridges this duality by blending Southern refinement with modern sensibility. Their garments honor heritage while embracing individuality, a reflection of the clients they serve.

Part of what distinguishes Richards Bespoke is its dedication to true bespoke craftsmanship. In an industry increasingly diluted by buzzwords, the team makes a clear distinction between “custom,” “made-to-measure,” and “bespoke.”

“Custom can mean almost anything,” said Richards. “Made-to-measure adjusts a standard pattern slightly. Bespoke means we draft an original pattern from scratch, specifically for your body. Every slope, every nuance is considered. You can see and feel the difference.”

That level of detail extends to sustainability. With over 40 hours of handwork in each suit and fabrics sourced from centuries-old mills across the globe, quality is never compromised. “We only use the finest materials. Many are RWS-certified, meaning they’re produced with ethical animal treatment and environmental care in mind,” said Richards.

In a world of fast fashion and fleeting trends, Richards Bespoke offers something lasting: garments with soul, built for real lives. As clients become more conscious of what they wear and why, the brand’s slow, intentional process provides both luxury and peace of mind.

Even as the fashion landscape shifts, Richards Bespoke stays attuned to the pulse of its clientele. For men in 2025, fuller cuts, pleated trousers, and earthy tones dominate the wardrobe. Sweater polos are replacing traditional button-downs, offering a relaxed yet refined alternative. For women, bold pinstripes, wide-leg trousers, and double-breasted jackets lead the charge, balancing power and femininity with ease.

But above all, the garments are designed to move with the wearer—across occasions, across seasons, across identity.

“We’re not just making suits,” said Downs. “We’re creating confidence, individuality, and a sense of self.”

In the ever-evolving world of fashion, Richards Bespoke remains rooted in its values: timeless craftsmanship, inclusive design, and an unwavering commitment to the individual. In Nashville and beyond, they are redefining what it means to dress well… and to be well-dressed. RichardsBespoke.com

PELLA
ARTICLE BY RICK MURRAY PHOTOGRAPHY
RICK MURRAY

Since the dawn of time, the concepts of home and family have been intertwined. Families need the centering that homes can provide, and homes are just hollow structures without families to fill them with love and joy.

Just as families grow and change, so do trends behind home styling. Looks and features that were commonplace just a few years ago often begin to look old and dated as new designs come along. Two of the most important of elements of home style are windows and doors. The right combination of doors and windows can enhance homeowner enjoyment while simultaneously elevating the curb appeal and resale value of every property.

When choosing new or replacement doors and windows, it is essential to choose a vendor who understands the desires and the budget of the homeowner. Usually, the best option is to work with a local company.

Fortunately, Middle Tennessee is blessed with such a firm – Pella Windows & Doors of Nashville. Pella is one of the most respected companies in the windows and doors business, celebrating its 100th year in business during 2025. Pella Windows & Doors of Nashville has been around for over 50 years, and it has been owned by Ben Talbot and his family for over six years.

“I’ve always loved the construction industry, and I always knew that Pella is one of the most recognized brands in the window and door industry,” says Ben. “I joined the company in 2004, and over the years I spent time in both operations and sales and developed

a great appreciation for all aspects of the customer experience. I became the general manager in 2010, and I had the opportunity to purchase the company in 2019.”

Pella is capable of handling new construction and upgrades for all types of structures, from residences to commercial buildings. Their products are at the forefront of the construction industry, featuring timeless and modern designs, energy efficiency and long-term durability.

“We specialize in high-end window and door solutions for both new construction and replacement projects,” says Ben. “Our services include design consultation, product selection and professional installation. Whether it’s a home needing replacement windows, a multifamily or commercial development or a custom new build, we have products and services for every application.”

One unique aspect of Pella’s operation is its personal approach toward working with customers. From the moment they walk

into the showroom doors, they are guided through a collaborative process to ensure that their dreams are achieved.

“We start by understanding the customer’s vision, needs and budget,” says Ben. “From there, we walk them through product options, provide them with detailed quotes and coordinate the project with our fulfillment teams. Once everything is approved, we schedule installation with our trusted crews, ensuring constant communication and quality control throughout the process.”

Pella’s internal design team keeps a constant watch on emerging design trends and materials to ensure that every customer has access to the latest in door and window technologies. From traditional windows and doors to fully automated solutions, the Pella team can deliver.

The Doobie Brothers Bring Decades Of Music To FirstBank Amphitheater

After reuniting with Michael McDonald for a celebrated 50th anniversary tour in 2021, the Doobie Brothers’ longtime members Pat Simmons, Tom Johnston, and John McFee were feeling energized about their recent collaboration and decided they wanted to keep that momentum going. "We had a ball on the road for four years touring with Mike," says Johnston. "Everybody gets a kick out of being able to play basically the whole catalog of the band."

It was that vibe and momentum that lead them to working on new music, and merging the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (and recent Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees) group’s different hit-making eras together for the first time in decades with McDonald back in the fold on the new music. Walk the Road was born, marking the first time in the band's 55-year history that all three of its principal songwriters have contributed songs to an album. It's their 16th studio album and the first with original new material featuring McDonald since 1980. The album's ten tracks explore themes of recovery, reflection, and unity.

"Everybody is completely involved in this album. The writing, the playing, the signing, all of it," Johnston says. "All of the songs on the record have their place," says Simmons. "Every song has its own message. I feel like what's cool about this album is that all three of us wrote songs, so there's enough of a variety. Each song has its own personality and brings a certain aspect to the record."

That 55-year-history dates back to 1970 when The Doobie Brothers band was founded in San Jose, California by Johnston and Simmons and quickly rose from playing energetic local gigs to achieving national stardom with their early hits,  "Listen to the Music," "China Grove," and "Long Train Runnin."  They earned their first number one in 1974 with Simmons’ "Black Water."  McDonald joined the band in 1975 as a keyboardist, and it was his smooth, R&B-infused voice that helped usher in a new era. Albums like Takin’ It to the Streets and Minute by Minute  won them multiple Grammys and spawned chart-toppers like " What a Fool Believes ,"  shifting the Doobie Brothers toward soft rock and really cementing their 1970s legacy.

As the Doobie Brothers bring their Walk This Road Tour to Franklin this month, their appearance follows a recent induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. "It was amazing," says Johnston. "We were all blown away that we were selected. We didn't see it coming. The people you're getting inducted to be in the hall of fame with, guided you musically as you were coming up. To be included in that lofty atmosphere of really great writers is mind blowing."

“When you walk out on that stage, and the audience goes off and starts singing all the songs, no matter what their age, yelling and screaming, it gives you such a rush.”
- Tom Johnston

"It was a really humbling experience," says Simmons. "One of the guys being inducted had 89 number one songs!"

The key to The Doobie Brothers longevity and success lies in their touring says Johnston. "Touring has a great deal to do with it. When you walk out on that stage, and the audience goes off and starts signing all the songs, no matter what their age, yelling and screaming, it gives you such a rush. All of a sudden you're 20 again."

Simmons adds, "Inspiration is part of the process. Every time you work on new material, it becomes fresh. The inspiration manifests itself once you get on to something. It comes from inside."

Patrick Simmons/Photo by Clay Patrick McBride

So what's next for this legendary band? According to Johnston, "We've talked about doing another record. If more tracks come up, great. We'll just keep writing." "Oh, we'll always be writing," adds Simmons. "We’ve worked together so long, and part of the reason we're still playing together is because we have this agreement on how we want to live our lives,"

The guys are looking forward to bring their music and harmonies to Franklin. "I have a lot of friends in Franklin and I've been to some cool restaurants out there," says Simmons."It's a great area. It's the Hollywood of Nashville."

Adds Johnston "It's a beautiful part of the country."

INSIDE THE VISION, CRAFT, AND COMMUNITY

SPIRIT POWERING MIDDLE TENNESSEE’S MOST THOUGHTFUL COMMUNITY

Artist rendering of the Outpost comfort station and grill

In the rolling hills of Maury County, where pastoral beauty meets a growing appetite for intentional living, something extraordinary is taking root. Firefly is more than a new neighborhood; it’s a redefinition of what it means to come home. Conceived by Mark Enderle and Mark Yarborough, partners at Storied Development, well-known for their success with The Grove in Williamson County, Firefly builds on decades of expertise while breaking away from traditional formulas. “We’ve been in the Nashville area for years and understand that the golf-centric market is significantly underserved,” Enderle says. “The Grove taught us lessons that inspired us to create something the market has never seen before.” With a seasoned team that has crafted some of the nation’s most celebrated master-planned communities, they’re setting a new standard, not just for Tennessee, but for the entire country.

“Instead of duplicating what has worked in the past, we set out to reimagine what a neighborhood could be,” Yarborough explains. “Firefly will be a place where families grow closer and stay connected across generations.” That philosophy is reflected not only in the layout and programming, but in the very name: Firefly. Evoking summer evenings, barefoot childhoods, and the timeless joy of catching flickering lights in a jar, the name captures a sense of wonder and nostalgia that threads through the entire community.

At its core, Firefly honors the land it inhabits. Rather than forcing the land to fit a mold, Firefly celebrates the natural contours, expansive vistas, and rural charm of the Tennessee countryside. The homes reflect a contemporary farmhouse style, timeless, personal, and deeply connected to the surrounding landscape. “Firefly’s respect for the natural beauty of the area is expressed through design flexibility and a land plan that meets the real

needs of families,” says Enderle. This attention to detail also extends to the wide range of amenities offered, each striking a balance between elegance and simplicity while seamlessly blending into the landscape. Firefly is a place where authenticity, beauty, and simplicity come to life.

True to Firefly’s immersive spirit, even the golf experience defies convention. Andrew Green, one of the nation's most acclaimed course architects, has seamlessly woven an 18-hole championship course and a 9-hole short course into the landscape, honoring the natural terrain in every design choice. By taking cues from the land itself, the courses blend harmoniously with their surroundings, resulting in both a challenging and inspirational golfing experience. “There’s a real connection between the Tennessee countryside, the community being built here, and this golf course,” Green says. “They’re not separate ideas, they’re one story told in different ways.”  This approach transforms golf from a solitary luxury into a shared narrative that runs throughout Firefly.

The neighborhood flows with a sense of rhythm and openness. Walkability, humanscale architecture, and gathering spaces foster daily moments of interaction. Firefly is centered around a village concept; instead of oversized clubhouses or grand statements, the thoughtfully scaled and positioned amenities create connection, approachability, and relationship-driven experiences. “The Village model keeps amenities on a personal scale,” says Enderle. “It encourages residents to come together naturally, to connect with ease.”  This commitment to connection runs deeper than any blueprint. From the start, Firefly has prioritized people over polish. Events, programming, and shared spaces aren’t afterthoughts; they are foundational elements. “People make the party,” Enderle adds. “That idea has guided every decision. Our goal is to help neighbors become friends and families build memories that last.”

That people-first mindset is also evident in how the team addressed early infrastructure challenges. When local water systems proved insufficient for long-term goals, the developers took action by working closely with Maury County Water to deliver a future-proof distribution system. “It wasn’t just about solving our problem,” Enderle explains. “It was about creating something that serves this area for decades.” Combined with a forward-thinking Planned Unit Development strategy, this

investment below the surface enables Firefly to grow with both integrity and flexibility. While Firefly offers striking architecture and enviable lifestyle elements, its ambition goes beyond mere aesthetics. This isn’t a place designed to impress; it’s a place built to endure. Success here won’t be measured in homesite sales or Instagrammable moments but in the quiet accumulation of stories, milestones, and everyday joys. “Anyone can build amenities and beautiful homes,” Enderle says.

“But what matters is whether people truly enjoy them, whether they feel at home, and whether their children and grandchildren remember this place with love.”

In a region racing toward the future, Firefly stands out by moving with intention. It invites you to slow down, settle in, and become part of something lasting.  FireflyLiving.com

High-Style PUERTO RICO'S

Among The Five-star Resorts And Hidden Beaches Is Haute Cuisine And Architectural Bliss

Puerto Rico offers more than turquoise water and white sand beaches along its 300 miles of coastline. It’s a destination that blends centuries-old architecture and rich cultural heritage with natural beauty. Whether you’re wandering through the vibrant streets of Old San Juan or hiking to a hidden waterfall deep in the rainforest, the island’s blend of elegance and adventure makes it a unique escape for those who want luxury AND fun.

El Yunque

Nowhere is Puerto Rico’s old-world charm more evident than in Old San Juan, a 500-year-old living museum of Spanish Colonial architecture that’s as colorful as it is historical. Pastel-hued buildings line the narrow cobblestone streets (made of blue-hued stone ballast from Spanish ships), each facade adorned with intricate wrought-iron balconies, decorative cornices, and heavy mahogany doors, design features that have endured since the 16th and 17th centuries. The district’s historic grid layout is designed to maximize breezes and shade, to shelter you from Puerto Rico's enduring sun.

Make sure to stay at Palacio Provincial, located in the heart of Old San Juan and within walking distance to many local attractions. The hotel is situated within an early 19th century historic building, which for most of its 200-year existence housed the center of diplomacy for Puerto Rico. A highlight for any architecture lover is a tour with Andy Rivera, a distinguished professional in the field of historic preservation and architectural design, who currently works as part of the Puerto Rico Historic Building Drawing Society (PRHBDS), an organization dedicated to the documentation and conservation of historic buildings in Puerto Rico. You might try Mercado La Carreta for lunch after your tour. But don't retreat back to your hotel just yet - Old San Juan has a vibrant nightlife where you can find anything from fine dining experiences, musical events and trendy clubs to dance the night away.

To continue your architectural journey, travel to the city of Guayamo, approximately a onehour drive from Old San Juan. Guayamo, "The City of Witches," boasts many museums, among them, Museo Casa Cautiño, a historical gem that offers a glimpse into the island’s colonial and aristocratic past. The house showcases an elegant blend of neoclassical and Puerto Rican Creole architecture, with a symmetrical façade, Roman arches, pilasters, and ornamental detailing that reflect the aesthetic transition of the late 19th century.

Tuna Crudo at Gallo Pinto

During the Spanish-American War, the house was used as headquarters by U.S. forces. After the war, the Cautiño family returned and lived there for generations, filling it with art and handcrafted furniture made by Puerto Rican artisans. Check out Gallo Pinto with Chef Ángel David Moreno for dinner. Known for his innovative approach, Chef Ángel, a finalist for the 2025 James Beard Awards, infuses classic Puerto Rican flavors with modern techniques, creating dishes like chicken pate, tuna crudo and passion fruit sorbet to cleanse your palate.

But Puerto Rico’s luxury isn’t limited to just its cities. The island’s natural wonders invite travelers to explore a more adventurous side of its style story.

An hour east of San Juan is the El Yunque National Forest, offering lush hiking trails, cascading waterfalls, and picturesque vistas. As the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system, El Yunque is alive with chirping coquí frogs, misty air, and towering tree ferns. Trails like La Mina or Mount Britton lead visitors through stone paths and bamboo thickets to breathtaking lookouts. If you listen, you're likely to hear the beloved Coqui frogs from dusk until dawn.

As the sun sets, another kind of adventure awaits. On the island’s east coast lies Laguna Grande in Fajardo, one of Puerto Rico’s three bioluminescent bays. Guided kayak tours take guests through mangrove tunnels under starlit skies to a glowing lagoon, where microscopic organisms called dinoflagellates light up the bay, producing a glowin-the-dark effect when stimulated by the movement of your paddle. This natural phenomenon is truly magical.

Not to be outdone, Puerto Rico is also home to a booming food scene with 8 James Beard nominees in 2025 alone. Beers and breweries, rum distilleries, coffee haciendas and over 5,000 restaurants round out all that Puerto Rico has to offer.

The best part of Puerto Rico is its people. They call themselves  Boricua,  a unique name honoring their Island heritage. Boricua is a spirit, flavor, and rhythm that you'll intrinsically feel in every part of this most eastern island of the Greater Antilles. Boricua is a state of mind and a way of life, embodied by its proud, passionate, kind people. Get ready to #LiveBoricua DiscoverPuertoRico.com

JEREMY AND LAUREN POPOFF TALK MUSIC, MARRIAGE, AND MEANINGFUL MOMENTS

Perfect Unity

Rockstar couple Jeremy and Lauren Popoff love their life in Franklin. The California transplants have called Franklin home since 2020, renovating their historic property with help from HGTV’s Christina Hall. As Jeremy puts it, "Franklin kind of called us. We were drawn to it."

Jeremy, co-founder and guitarist of the iconic alt-rock band LIT, and Lauren, built her own thriving beauty business that she sold when they left Orange County for greener pastures in Tennessee. We catch up with the Popoffs to see what they're up to now.

LET'S START WITH YOUR STORY. YOU'RE MARRIED 10 YEARS. HOW DID THE TWO OF YOU MEET?

Jeremy: It's kind of a funny story. We both grew up in Southern California in Orange County, and we actually met at the sunglass store in the mall. When I would come back from being on tour, I'd pop in the mall and grab some more road supplies, and she was working in the sunglass store, and that's how we met. And then a few years later, we connected one night. I used to own a restaurant bar in Fullerton, California, and we met one night there and we've been together ever since.

Lauren: Yeah. It's pretty funny. Everyone always thinks we met at a show or something, and I'm like, "No, the mall."

WHO'S THE DOG LOVER, OR BOTH OF YOU ARE? AND HOW MANY DO YOU HAVE NOW?

Jeremy: Well, we definitely both are.

Lauren: I might have more dog love in me since I keep bringing them home.

Jeremy: We have three dogs. We just got a French Bulldog puppy, Henley, a couple weeks ago, and we have a German Shepherd and a Boxer. And two pigs.

WHAT'S A TYPICAL DAY LIKE IN THE POPOFF HOUSEHOLD?

Lauren: I think when we're both home, especially because there's so much travel involved in Jeremy's job and it's so high energy, I feel like sometimes we live 80-year-old people. We just run errands, we go to the grocery store, we like to eat dinner at 4:30 or 5:00.There's such a great community out here, too, so, I would say three to four days a week, we are meeting up with some of our friends in some aspect of the day. But, it's pretty normal. Go to the UPS store, go to the grocery store.

Jeremy: Since we've been in Franklin, we've done a lot of things to the house and the property and we've been slowly creating a place that we love to come home to and don't mind not leaving if we have the option.

WHAT PROMPTED THE MOVE FROM L.A. TO FRANKLIN?

Jeremy: Well, I started coming out to Nashville about 20 years ago for songwriting. Our manager at the time talked me into coming out to explore writing country music and other styles of music other than what I was writing with my rock band. I wrote with some people on Music Row. Fell in love with that. And so, I started coming out a week here, a month there, and I loved Nashville. I loved it then and I love it now. It's a completely different place, but I still have always loved it and loved watching it grow.

So it was my second home for a long time, and I started bringing Lauren out with me when we started dating 15 years ago, and she fell in love with it. So we always knew we'd wind up out here someday.

JEREMY, HOW HAS YOUR CREATIVE LIFE EVOLVED SINCE YOUR "MY OWN WORST ENEMY" DAYS?

Jeremy:  I had grown up playing in a rock and roll band, writing with my guys, not really scheduled, kind of more impromptu. And then, coming out here and learning how to discipline myself and have scheduled writing sessions that would start at 11:00 a.m. or noon - and the talent out here. It was really inspiring, and the discipline helped me become a better songwriter. So then, I wrote some great country songs with some great country artists and writers, and I feel like it made me a better writer for LIT and for other rock bands that I worked with. Just the creativity, the community, the process - I feel like it made me a lot better of a songwriter.

LAUREN, WHAT'S SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT BEING MARRIED TO A TOURING MUSICIAN?

Lauren: That's a really great question. I think one of the biggest things is that just because they have a certain persona or a certain stage presence doesn't mean that that really carries through all aspects of their life. I think that Jeremy is a really great friend. He's really sensitive, he's loyal, he's accountable, all of these things. And I think he could be in any career, but I think when people look at him, they're like, 'Oh, your lives must just be so crazy." And I'm like, 'Well, the shows are crazy, and he has some crazy stories, don't get me wrong.'

But I think the biggest surprise to people is just kind of our normal daily life and the

fact that he is just a great husband. He's very much a part of everything that happens in the house. There are so many things where I'm like, 'Babe, can you just handle this'?' He's definitely kind of that person in the household, which I love. And I think for some people, they might just think, 'oh, everything gets done for them,' and he definitely has his hands in all the things.

HAVE YOU GUYS COLLABORATED CREATIVELY IN ANY WAY (BESIDES WORKING ON THE HOUSE) OFFICIALLY OR BEHIND THE SCENES?

Jeremy: Somewhat. Lauren is in the health and wellness space, and she has her own business in that. We collaborate on stuff like that creatively in different ways for her to grow her business.  And a lot of creative stuff we collaborate on at the

house and on the property, and just things that we want to do. But not musically. I keep her out of that.

Lauren: I have no musical talent. I can barely even play a tambourine. It's really bad.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU GUYS? ANY PERSONAL MILESTONES OR CREATIVE DREAMS ON THE HORIZON?

Jeremy: LIT is making a new record right now. We're on the road constantly, but we've been writing our butts off and recording, and Lauren's just working her butt off with her business, and I think we're just going to keep focusing on that and growing those things.

CYNDI THOMSON RETURNS TO THE SPOTLIGHT WITH A RENEWED CREATIVE SPIRIT

“Music, once admitted to the soul, becomes a sort of spirit, and never dies.” -- Edward Bulwer Lytton

After stepping away from the spotlight at the height of her country music career in 2001, Franklin’s Cyndi Thomson is returning to her musical roots. Released last May, more than two decades since My World, Thomson's new EP, the six song  Acres of Diamonds  is a testament to the hold music has over us. Thomson said of the release, “Acres of Diamonds is the harvest of a quiet season – a reminder that even in stillness, something precious is growing.” We caught up with Thomson to ask about reclaiming her musical career.

LET'S REWIND TO 2001 WHEN "WHAT I REALLY MEANT TO SAY" WAS A NUMBER ONE HIT. HOW DID IT FEEL BACK THEN WHEN IT CATAPULTED YOU INTO THE SPOTLIGHT?

It was so exciting and everything that I dreamed of and more. I started dreaming about country music when I was 12 years old and so to be standing in that moment was just a tremendous feeling. You also think about all of the people that it took to get you there and I remember thinking about my parents and all the time spent investing in me. You want to celebrate all of the people in the midst of that moment.

YOU STEPPED AWAY FROM THE INDUSTRY AT A TIME WHEN YOUR CAREER WAS TAKING OFF. WHAT INSPIRED THAT DECISION AND HOW DO YOU REFLECT ON IT NOW?

This gift that I had dreamed of doing my whole life was a fast-spinning world, and in the midst of it, I was having panic attacks and night terrors. I was having major heart palpitations and all of these things didn't make sense to me. My mind would race and I thought to myself, 'How could I be in the midst of my destiny, my purpose, and also feel all of these other feelings of fear and anxiety that are so overwhelming?' So I went to a doctor who prescribed me antidepressants, which were kind of a new thing back then. I think I was afraid to tell anybody I was feeling that way because I didn't want them to think I didn't appreciate what was happening or treasure what was going on in my life. It was weighing on me that everything I had dreamed of I had accomplished. But I'm really proud of myself looking back because I was young but mature enough to really think this isn't right. I took a long time to make the decision to walk away. I was prayerful and didn't make it haphazardly. I do not regret it. There are things I missed tremendously once I stepped away. I'm proud of myself. There's no amount of money or awards that could compare to this life I've created with my family.

WHAT'S GOING ON WITH NEW MUSIC TODAY?

I started releasing new music last year. There was a period of time before that where I really hunkered down and started writing the music we're putting out now.  CyndiThomson.com

TENNESSEE LAKES FOR LEISURE

You Don’t Have To Travel Far To Explore Someplace New

Become a local traveling connoisseur by camping, fishing, hiking, or boating at any of our many Tennessee lakes. Although Tennessee has a plethora of lakes, rivers, and campgrounds, here are four lakes you can adventure closer to home.

FALL CREEK FALLS

Park visitors can rent paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes currently through October. Activities include: biking, birding, boating, fishing, golfing, hiking, rock climbing, naturalist-led programs, educational experiences, and swimming. Lodge amenities come with private balconies, restaurants, lounge areas, a heated outdoor pool, fire pits, lake access, an 18-hole golf course, and an EV charger. What a relaxing, calm, and enjoyable experience away from the city, work, and stresses of weekday living. And don’t forget to waterfall chase with the many outdoor cascading showers, one even boasting a 256-foot drop.

RADNOR LAKE

Radnor is a quiet hideaway gem for bird-watchers, animal enthusiasts, nature enthusiasts, and hikers. They house bald eagles and owls in their nature preserve. There are so many species of animals to catch and spy on while taking a stroll on one of the hiking trails. Nature photographers will love the peace, stillness, and natural surroundings as they look at capturing a moment in nature from one of the many creatures who call this park home. Otters, turtles, birds of various species, deer, wildflowers, bubbling brooks, waterfalls, and lake views are all great shots. It’s your own National Geographic moment, locally.

PERCY PRIEST LAKE

Percy offers horseback riding, picnicking, wildlife watching, swimming, sailing, wakeboarding, jet skiing, water skiing, hiking, biking, boating, and camping.  All types of water vehicles are welcome, from paddle boards, canoes, kayaks, sail boats, power boats, and houseboats. Boats ranging from pontoon party boats to ski boats are available for rent. There are developed campgrounds and also primitive camping on designated islands for those who want a more rugged experience. Fishing is the favorite activity on the lake, and make sure to bring your fishing license. The types of fish found in the lake include striped bass, white bass, smallmouth and largemouth bass, Cherokee bass, sunfish, catfish, trout, and bluegill. Straight from the lake to the grill or campfire, you can catch, keep, and cook.

REELFOOT LAKE

This 15,000-acre natural lake is the biggest lake in Tennessee. Reelfoot offers scenic pontoon boat tours all summer through September. Reelfoot Lake is a flooded forest with stately Cypress trees extending upward from the lake’s waters below. The park is rich with wildlife and plant life. Naturalists can enjoy the wild setting by traveling along several hiking trails. Also, in the fall season, hundreds of white pelicans migrate to the lake and create a wondrous sight to observe. Two campgrounds are available and have full amenities ready for a cozy night around the campfire. You can roast hot dogs and enjoy a s’more or two. On July 5th, they will be having a sunset fireworks pontoon tour.

DAY TWO

Morning: Biscuit-Making at Callie’s Wait… hear us out. We know you are on vacation but this isn’t your typical cooking experience. This is a beloved culinary experience. Get your hands in some flour and have fun biscuit-making at Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit. Owner Carrie Morey wanted to share her mother's biscuit recipe nationally and this November marks their 20th anniversary so Carrie is clearly doing something right. During this hands-on private class, you’ll learn the art of crafting tender, buttery biscuits from scratch. Hint: There is a not-so-secret “secret ingredient” you wouldn’t traditionally find in a biscuit recipe, but … you’ll have to take a class to find out what it is.

Late Morning: Private Hat Bar Experience with Southern Ruetz

Next, channel your creativity and personal style with a private session at Southern Ruetz. Known for their bespoke events and luxury experiences, one of their standout offerings is a custom hat bar. You’ll design a one-of-a-kind wide-brim felt or straw hat, choosing from an array of ribbons, feathers, charms, branding, and custom burn designs. It’s part fashion, part artisan craft, and entirely unforgettable. Bonus: You get to wear your creation for the rest of the trip (and collect compliments everywhere you go).

Lunch:

Treat yourself to a memorable lunch. Option #1: Grab a table at Church & Union. When you walk in, you may think you are in a church. And technically, you are. The church-turnedrestaurant is an unforgettable setting. If you are an avid reader, check out the ceiling. The entire text of Sun Tzu's Art of War is hand-painted on the ceiling of the main dining room. And if you look closely, there are hidden messages from the artist up there too.

Option #2: If you’re craving something lighter (or just need a sweet fix), stroll over to Carmella’s Dessert Bar for artisanal pastries, espresso, or a scoop of gelato. Heaven in a cup.

Afternoon Wine Stop:

Make your way to Wine & Company where boutique wines take center stage. Their curated choices are perfect for tasting. Pair it with a charcuterie plate and settle in for a while. The layout

of the bar, tables, and couches makes it easy to find a new local friend and chat for a while.

Dinner: XO Brasserie

Conclude your day at XO Brasserie, contemporary Chinese cuisine with a focus on Cantonese and Sichuan flavors. Order a round of cocktails, share a few small plates, some house-made dumplings and toast to a day well spent, one filled with flavor, flair … and a fabulous new hat.

DAY THREE

Morning Departure: Check In at The Inn at Middleton Place

By now you are likely ready for a bit of quiet and a little more elbow room.

Hop in the car because you are trading the bustle of downtown Charleston for the peaceful sounds of crickets, frogs and wildlife. You’ll know you're close when the trees and moss start arching over the roads. The Inn at Middleton Place is located just 25 minutes away. This award-winning hideaway features floor-toceiling windows, minimalist design, and complimentary access to the adjacent Middleton Place estate.

Explore: Middleton Place Gardens and House Museum

Spend your day exploring Middleton Place, a National Historic Landmark known for its 65 acres of America’s oldest landscaped gardens. Wander among centuries-old camellias and reflecting pools, visit the house museum, and reflect on the site’s complex history.

Lunch/Dinner: Middleton Place Restaurant

You can actually walk from the Inn to Middleton Place restaurant via a trail on the property. Just follow the trail signs. The 10-minute walk is stunning. You’ll see wildlife, cross bridges, and view scenery that cannot be beat. Bring your appetite as the portions are as generous as the people serving you. Lowcountry dishes like shrimp and grits are prepared with ingredients from the estate’s farm and gardens.

Late Morning Return: Charleston City Market

Refined MEDITERRANEAN Cuisine Meets MODERN LUXURY

THE BLUE ASTER IS MORE THAN JUST A HOTEL RESTAURANT

Tucked within the Conrad Nashville is the The Blue Aster  More than just a hotel restaurant, The Blue Aster is a culinary destination redefining upscale Southern dining. With its modern coastal influence, seasonal menus, and commitment to local sourcing, The Blue Aster offers an experience that’s as stylish as it is palatable.

Named for the Tennessee wildflower, the blue aster is a hardy and adaptable flower, making it a versatile addition to any garden. Much like the menu. Executive Chef Andrew Rodriguez's reimagined new menu is a road map through the Mediterranean coast with notable influences from Spain, Italy, France and Greece. Signature dishes like the 30-layer Lasagna, Duck & Foie Gras Cigars, and Ibérico Pork Schnitzel showcase the kitchen’s elevated approach toward gratifying cuisine. “The Mediterranean region is rich in culinary heritage and there are very specific flavor profiles found across cuisine in that part of the world that blend seamlessly together,” says Rodriguez. “Our goal was to create an adventurous yet approachable dining experience that took guests on a journey filled with familiar favorites and new dishes that encourage culinary curiosity.”

But it’s not just about what’s on the plate. The restaurant’s stylish atmosphere is an extension of the Conrad’s luxury. The airy yet intimate environment, with rich textures, golden lighting, and polished service is a nod to both charm and grandeur.

Whether you’re seated for a power breakfast, an indulgent dinner, or a glass of wine at the vibrant bar, The Blue Aster delivers a punch of panache. BlueAsterNashville.com

SIX YEARS 6,000 DOGS AND

WAGS & WALKS NASHVILLE HOSTS STAR-STUDDED BENEFIT CONCERT

ARTICLE BY ABBEY KOVACEVICH | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

WWags & Walks Nashville is celebrating six years in operation and 6,000 dogs rescued by throwing a party for the pups, and the entire city is invited.

On October 7, the rescue organization will celebrate a major milestone: six years of saving lives and a whopping 6,000 dogs rescued. To honor the moment and rally support for the future, Wags & Walks is hosting its second annual benefit concert at the iconic SkyDeck in downtown Nashville. The evening promises unforgettable performances by Tucker Wetmore, Chris Lane, Tiera Kennedy, Fancy Hagood, and more surprise guests.

It’s the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year and a critical way to fuel its lifesaving mission of reducing euthanasia in local shelters and increasing awareness of rescue dogs being wonderful pets.

“Our annual benefit concert is more than just a night of fun and incredible music,” says Kathryn Hurley, Executive Director. “It is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Last year, we were thrilled to launch this event with Dan + Shay and friends, and we are so excited to welcome Tucker Wetmore and other amazing artists to the SkyDeck stage this year. As we celebrate six years of Wags & Walks Nashville, 6,000 dogs saved, and the recent expansion of our Wags for Good program, which includes affordable spay/neuter services, public wellness appointments, and our medical relief program, this night makes it all possible. The funds raised directly fuel our mission and allow us to make an even greater impact in our community.”

Founded with the belief that every dog deserves a chance, Wags & Walks Nashville has become a trusted name in animal rescue across Tennessee. Over the years, the organization has built a dedicated network of fosters, volunteers, and adopters who help give dogs of all breeds and backgrounds a second chance at life. From saving dogs at risk in overcrowded shelters to ensuring each animal receives proper medical care, Wags & Walks works tirelessly to advocate for and rehome those who need it most.

“OUR GOAL IS TO REMOVE BARRIERS, SUPPORT FAMILIES, AND HELP ENSURE PETS STAY IN THEIR LOVING HOMES.”

But their work doesn’t stop there. In recent years, Wags has doubled down on serving not only animals but also the people who love them. The Wags for Good program has rapidly expanded to include low-cost veterinary services, community wellness clinics, and an emergency medical relief fund for pet owners facing financial hardship.

“Saving 6,000 dogs in six years is no small feat,” says Hurley. “But it’s also just the beginning. Our goal is to remove barriers, support families, and help ensure pets stay in their loving homes. The funds we raise on October 7 will help make that possible.”

This year’s concert is expected to sell out, drawing music fans, animal lovers, and supporters from all across the region. With the city skyline as the backdrop and some of country music’s hottest rising stars on stage, it’s shaping up to be one of Nashville’s must-attend fall events, and all for a cause that hits close to home. Every dollar raised will go directly toward saving more lives and strengthening Wags & Walks’ community outreach in the months ahead.

Whether you’ve adopted from Wags & Walks, volunteered, donated, or simply cheered them on from afar, this is a night to come together, celebrate how far they've come, and help push their mission even further. With great music, meaningful impact, and a community of dog lovers united under one roof, the October 7 benefit concert promises to be a night to remember. WagsAndWalks.org

TENNESS EE FIRSTS

NOW YOU KNOW

Tennessee has quite the history of making history. From playful pastimes and political milestones to sweet innovations and horse racing royalty, the Volunteer State has produced more than its share of national “firsts.” Here are a few trailblazing moments that started right here in Tennessee.

1. CHATTANOOGA WAS HOME TO THE FIRST PATENTED MINIATURE GOLF COURSE.

Garnet Carter, co-founder of Rock City and owner of the Fairyland Inn on Lookout Mountain, came up with the idea for miniature golf in the 1920s as a more accessible and family-friendly alternative to traditional golf for his hotel guests. In 1927, he patented his design, complete with playful obstacles like windmills and ramps, making it the first patented miniature golf course in the U.S. The concept caught on quickly, and soon, mini golf was being played across the country.

2. THE FIRST U.S. GUIDE DOG TEAM WAS FROM NASHVILLE. In 1928, a blind 20-year-old Nashville native named Morris Frank traveled to Switzerland, where he was paired with Buddy, a female German Shepherd trained as a seeing-eye dog. Together, they became the first working guide dog team in the United States. With Buddy by his side, Frank gained the confidence and freedom to live more independently, which launched the guide dog movement in America. In 1929, Frank co-founded the nation’s first guide dog training school, The Seeing Eye, in Nashville, paving the way for hundreds of thousands to gain greater independence.

3. IROQUOIS: THE HORSE THAT MADE HISTORY.

Iroquois made headlines in 1881 when he became the first American-bred and owned horse to win England’s Epsom Derby. He later retired to Belle Meade Plantation, where he stood at stud and went on to become the leading sire in the United States in 1892. His legacy endures, not only in racing bloodlines but through the Iroquois Steeplechase, an annual event held at Percy Warner Park benefitting Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt and other local community non-profits.

4. THE FIRST FEMALE U.S. SENATOR WAS A TENNESSEAN.

Hattie Wyatt Caraway, born in 1878 near Bakersville, Tennessee, made history in 1932 as the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate. Although she represented Arkansas, her Tennessee roots helped shape her groundbreaking career. Caraway championed women's rights and social welfare and opened doors for generations of women leaders.

5. AMERICA’S FIRST COMBINATION CANDY BAR WAS MADE IN NASHVILLE.

In 1912, Nashville’s Standard Candy Company introduced the Goo Goo Cluster, the first combination candy bar. The Goo Goo mixed marshmallow nougat, caramel, peanuts, and milk chocolate, in a delicious departure from typical single-ingredient candies. It paved the way for the combination candy bars we love today.

6. COTTON CANDY WAS INVENTED BY A NASHVILLE DENTIST. Yes, you read that right! In 1897, Dr. William Morrison, a dentist from Nashville, partnered with candy maker John C. Wharton to invent a machine that spun sugar into delicate threads. The two introduced their creation called “Fairy Floss” at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, where it was an instant hit. It quickly spread to amusement parks, carnivals, and fairs nationwide, becoming an iconic symbol of childhood joy and indulgence.

“FROM PLAYFUL PASTIMES AND POLITICAL MILESTONES TO SWEET INNOVATIONS AND HORSE RACING ROYALTY, THE VOLUNTEER STATE HAS PRODUCED MORE THAN ITS SHARE OF NATIONAL ‘FIRSTS.’”

A lot has changed since 1975, but one thing hasn’t! We still believe in always doing the right thing for our customers, as well as our community.
