1. Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care
Every year, roughly a quarter of a million young adults between the ages of 18-25 wind up in the hospital. From alcohol poisoning and nonlethal accidents to unexpected illnesses, it’s important to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Once a child reaches the age of 18, a parent’s decision-making role is significantly diminished, especially in regard to making healthcare decisions.
Should your child get in a car accident or fall ill and not be capable of making their own medical decisions, without a durable power of attorney naming the parents as health care agents for the child, the parents cannot make medical decisions on their child’s behalf. If you want to ensure you can continue to make healthcare decisions for your child, working with your child to create a healthcare power of attorney should be at the top of your to-do list.
2. HIPAA Authorization
In order to make informed medical decisions, it’s important to include a HIPAA authorization form along with a health care power of attorney. Without it, parents would be unable to communicate with healthcare professionals and insurance companies, as well as access their child’s health records and previous treatment information.
Similar to a health care power of attorney, a financial power of attorney gives parents the ability to make financial decisions on their child’s behalf, should they be unable to do so themselves. Should the child become disabled for any reason, then the parents would still be able to pay their child’s rent, credit card bills, utilities, access bank accounts and financial records, as well as manage any loans they may have.
4. FERPA Release
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act is designed to protect a college student’s privacy, but it can also leave parents locked out in an emergency. A properly worded release can allow parents to talk to school officials and release pertinent educational records and information should they need it.
5. Last Will and Testament
While many parents don’t want to think about this topic, especially as their child leaves home, it’s an important one to add to the list. A will allows parents to honor their child’s wishes on what should be done with their social media accounts, bank accounts, and personal assets. It also allows the child to specify any funeral arrangements they would like to have.

HOW GRACE SULLIVAN AND HER HOME MANAGEMENT TEAM BRING PEACE AND ORDER TO HOUSEHOLDS
When Grace Sullivan walks into a home, she doesn’t just see rooms and to-do lists. She sees the potential for calm, comfort and a life lived more fully.
As the founder and owner of Southern Grace Home, Sullivan has made it her mission to transform the way busy families and professionals experience their homes. Her work goes far beyond closet cleanouts and scheduled repairs. It’s a comprehensive home management service built on trust, customization and a heartfelt desire to serve.
“The heart of this business is truly to help and serve homeowners,” Sullivan said. “Families are busier than ever, and when someone gets home at the end of the day, they just want to relax and enjoy time with their loved ones. Our business allows them to do that.”
Southern Grace Home is redefining luxury living in Williamson County by offering a concierge-level approach to home care. The company handles everything from minor maintenance to major renovations, often becoming an indispensable partner for those with demanding careers or family lives.
“It’s a little bit of everything, from basic home maintenance to large-scale renovations and all the things in between,” Sullivan explained. “Tasks range from scheduling an HVAC appointment to overseeing a bathroom remodel to picking up dry cleaning to organizing spaces.”
CONTINUED >
For clients, that means fewer decisions to make and more hours reclaimed. One of Southern Grace Home’s core strengths is acting as a liaison between homeowners and service providers. The team researches, negotiates, schedules and follows through until each job is done, removing the mental burden from the homeowner’s plate.
Customization is central to how Sullivan and her team work. She believes that no two households operate the same way, and each client deserves a plan that respects their time, preferences and budget.
“We start by meeting personally with each potential client to get a sense of their immediate needs and future home wish list,” she said. “From time to budget, we want people to feel comfortable making decisions that are best for their household.”
Southern Grace Home keeps a vetted list of trusted vendors, providing clients with a range of estimates and options tailored to their specific goals. Whether it’s a young couple expecting their first child or a senior needing help downsizing, the approach remains highly personalized and supportive.
That personal connection becomes especially important during life’s big transitions. Sullivan recalled one client who was placed on bed rest late in pregnancy and needed immediate, hands-on assistance.
“She was seven months pregnant and suddenly put on bed rest,” Sullivan said. “We came in to help her get ready by doing a reset on the playroom, setting up the nursery, taking old items to Goodwill and making sure she felt prepared before the new baby arrived.”
For Sullivan, those moments are a reminder of the deeper impact her work can have. While some may see home management as a luxury, many of her clients see it as a lifeline.
“My superpower is bringing calm to the chaos,” she said. “With Southern Grace Home, the goal has always been to take the everyday stressors off the client so they can focus on what really matters.”
Trust is the foundation of Sullivan’s business, especially when working in the private spaces of high-profile clients or families navigating sensitive circumstances. Confidentiality and discretion are non-negotiable.
“We have a wide range of homeowners, including high-profile clients who depend on anonymity,” she said. “We understand that someone’s home is personal and sacred, and we take that very seriously.”
To ensure that trust is earned and maintained, Sullivan personally meets with each new client before work begins. It’s a step that underscores her commitment to relationships, not just checklists.
In a region where the pace of life rarely slows, Southern Grace Home offers something rare: a service that honors both the physical and emotional needs of the modern homeowner.
And for Grace Sullivan, that means showing up not just as a professional, but as a partner.
“We’re not just here to organize or manage—we’re here to care,” she said.

HOW FRANKLIN RESIDENT ROBIN LAPRE IS TRANSFORMING THE FUTURE OF ANIMAL WELFARE—ONE PAW AT A TIME
For animal advocate and author Robin Lapre, caring for dogs and cats is more than just a passion. She’s a powerful voice for the animals who can’t speak for themselves. Her outreach efforts have inspired pet lovers to adopt, foster, and stand up for better animal welfare policies. Whether she’s at a shelter, speaking at an event, or writing her next book, Lapre's goal remains the same: to ensure every dog and cat is treated with the compassion and dignity they deserve.
“It became clear to me that we needed to do much more education in our communities about responsible pet ownership.”
WHAT FIRST SPARKED YOUR PASSION FOR ANIMAL ADVOCACY?
I started walking dogs at Williamson County Animal Center in 2017, and I was soon hooked on the notion that we needed to help as many homeless animals as possible, not just in Williamson County but in other counties as well. Over time, it became clear to me that we needed to do much more education in our communities about responsible pet ownership.
CAN YOU SHARE THE STORY OF ONE ANIMAL THAT HAD A PARTICULARLY PROFOUND IMPACT ON YOU?
Beatrice was a dog that came from a property with twenty-six dogs, all living outdoors, none of them altered. I tried for months to socialize her, but Beatrice was considered “semi-feral,” meaning she missed a key developmental window when she could have learned to form trusting relationships with humans. Her owner was not a bad person, but lacked basic knowledge regarding animal welfare. This is a prime example of why we need to engage in education, not only to help individual animals but to reduce the strain on our animal control agencies that handle these unfortunate situations.
The most urgent issue pertaining to companion pets is the overpopulation of cats and dogs and inadequate rates of spay/neuter. There are many reasons why people don’t fix their pets including the expense, long waits, a lack of awareness, and a failure to make spay/neuter a priority.
A “visiting author” day entails driving to any school within a 100-mile radius of Franklin. Typically, I speak to multiple grades which allows me to reach hundreds of students in a single day! I am always impressed by the quality of the questions and the compassion kids have for their pets. At home, I manage three dogs of my own, and I have a side gig as an urgent care physician, so no, I did not quit my day job!
I struggled to find books that tackled essential issues, so I bit the bullet and started an original collection under the nonprofit Charlie’s Angels Saving Animals (CASA).
Doggie Do’s and Don’ts as Told by Cadence the Dog covers many aspects of responsible pet ownership. This book is the basis for our school presentations, and we’ve been thrilled to see it incorporated by humane societies across the country.
Two Frisky Kittens: How to Count High Real Quick is a book about the perils of unaltered kittens. It covers essential messages of spay/neuter in a way that kids can understand and enjoy. As with all of our books, it comes with additional information to make lessons easy for educators.
I Like Kibble and So Much More! will be released in August and is a light-hearted book on nutrition for dogs.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO SPEAK UP FOR ANIMALS BUT DOESN’T KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN?
Reach out to your local shelter or rescue. You might be surprised that you can help in numerous capacities beyond walking dogs. If you observe a concerning situation in the community, contact animal control. They will conduct a welfare check to be sure conditions are adequate for animals.
NEXT FOR YOU—ANY UPCOMING PROJECTS, ADDITIONAL BOOKS, OR COMMUNITY INITIATIVES YOU'RE EXCITED TO SHARE?
We are just getting warmed up. More books are coming through the initiative known as CASA PAWS (Promoting Animal Welfare Stories). You can read about our mission to educate at CasaTransport.org/education

ARTICLE BY JUSTIN GILBERT,
1. What are some of the most common misconceptions people have about estate planning?
A common myth is, “I’m too young to need an estate plan.” In reality, life is unpredictable and every adult benefits from having at least a basic plan. Parents need to ensure guardianship arrangements are in place for their children. Incapacity planning, such as powers of attorney and health care directives, is essential at any stage of adulthood. Additionally, digital assets, like online accounts and cryptocurrencies, require management.
Another widespread belief is, “My family will know what to do.” Unfortunately, verbal instructions carry no legal weight. When there’s no clear legal directive, families often face internal conflict. Assumptions based on “common sense” often lead to misunderstandings, emotional decisions, and disputes that could have been avoided with proper documentation.
Many people also think, “My estate is too small to matter.” But even modest estates benefit from a plan. Simple documents can help families avoid probate costs and legal hurdles. Insurance policies must have the correct beneficiary designations, and if someone owns a small business, the lack of a plan can complicate succession and distribution.
Some assume, “Joint ownership solves everything.” While joint accounts can ease access, they come with risks. Co-owners may be exposed to one another’s creditors, and joint ownership doesn’t cover incapacity or substitute for a comprehensive estate plan. It can also create tax complications and interfere with Medicaid eligibility.
2. What happens if someone passes away without a will or estate plan in place? What does that process look like for their loved ones?
When someone dies without a will families are often left navigating complex bureaucracy during an already painful time. Assets are typically frozen, which may prevent loved ones from accessing funds they urgently need. Courts appoint an estate administrator, who might be a stranger, and even basic living expenses or funeral costs may require formal court approval.
Without a plan, assets are distributed according to the state’s intestacy laws, which may not reflect the deceased’s wishes. Unmarried partners often receive nothing, no matter how long they’ve been together. Stepchildren may be left out entirely. If no relatives can be located, the assets may eventually revert to the state. For parents, a lack of estate planning leaves the guardianship of minor children to the court’s discretion. Children may be temporarily placed in state care while guardianship is decided, and disputes among family members can cause long-lasting trauma. Without proper trust structures, children’s inheritances may be mismanaged, and special needs children risk losing government benefits.
The financial burden is also significant. Probate can take months or years, incurring legal fees that consume up to 8% of the estate’s value. The process makes personal details public and forfeits valuable tax planning opportunities. For business owners, the delay and uncertainty can jeopardize operations and force closures.
In today’s digital world, complications extend further. Social media accounts may remain active indefinitely, cryptocurrency can become permanently inaccessible, and online businesses or digital family heirlooms may be lost without access to passwords and account information.
3. Beyond finances, what are the emotional consequences of not having a plan for your family or beneficiaries?
Emotional consequences can be severe. Families often face conflict over sentimental belongings like jewelry, tools or heirlooms. When the court appoints an administrator, resentment can build among relatives, especially if decisions feel unfair or contrary to a loved one’s wishes. Even strong family ties may be permanently damaged under the stress of ambiguous guidance. Children are particularly vulnerable when there is no plan. Guardianship battles can cause emotional upheaval, and children may be temporarily placed in unfamiliar care. Without proper trust structures, inheritances might be poorly managed, and special needs children could lose essential public benefits.
Justin Gilbert, Esq.
4. Can you share an example of a situation where not having a plan created avoidable stress or conflict?
Tom and Sarah had been married for 30 years when Tom died suddenly of a heart attack. Although they’d casually discussed their wishes, nothing was formalized in writing. Tom managed the family finances and owned a construction business. When he passed, Sarah was unable to access the business account, as Tom was the sole owner. Payroll was due, but she couldn’t legally sign checks. Their house was still in Tom’s name alone, a common oversight from earlier in their marriage.
To complicate matters, Tom’s adult daughter from a previous marriage demanded a portion of the business. Critical account passwords were lost. Over the next 18 months, the court process consumed more than $45,000 in legal fees, the business lost contracts, and Sarah had to take out loans to pay bills. The most painful part? Tom had intended everything for Sarah, but his wishes had no enforceable power.
All of this could have been avoided with a simple estate plan including a will, business succession documents, updated property titles, durable powers of attorney, and password management.
5. On the flip side, what are some of the benefits families experience when everything is thoughtfully planned ahead of time?
When Maria passed away, her family didn’t have to worry about decisions or documents. Her health care directives and funeral arrangements were already established and funded. Important paperwork was easily accessible, and everyone knew their role. Instead of stress, the family could focus on honoring Maria’s life and legacy.
Financially, her estate transferred smoothly to beneficiaries. Business operations continued uninterrupted, and strategic tax planning saved the family money. Insurance payouts were quick and accurate, with no unwelcome surprises.
There were no disputes over heirlooms, no resentment, and no legal battles. Guardianship for minors was predetermined, and relationships remained intact.
Maria had also included personal touches including letters to loved ones, a record of family history, and instructions for honoring charitable wishes.
6. How do you guide clients through what can feel like a really emotional or overwhelming process?
I begin by asking clients to consider their “why.” Who do they want to protect? What legacy do they want to leave? What fears or family dynamics are weighing on them? Reflecting on these questions brings clarity and purpose to the planning process.
Then, I break things into manageable phases. First, we address essential protections like wills, powers of attorney, and guardianship nominations. Next, we organize assets, account information, and beneficiary designations. Finally, we explore advanced planning like trusts, tax strategies, charitable giving, and legacy writing.
Many clients feel emotional barriers like fear of favoritism, anxiety over family conflicts, or discomfort confronting mortality. I validate these feelings and help them find solutions, take breaks when needed, and celebrate progress.
7. What’s one small but powerful first step someone can take today to start getting their affairs in order?
A simple but meaningful first step is creating a list of your assets, accounts, and key documents. This includes financial accounts, property, valuables, digital assets, and important contacts like your attorney or insurance agent. Review beneficiary designations and gather essential paperwork like wills, deeds and powers of attorney.
This list provides clarity, helps spot gaps, and gives your loved ones a starting point in case something happens. Even without formal documents, this alone makes a major difference in reducing stress for your family.
If you’re over 50 and experiencing jaw pain, tightness, or clicking, you’re not alone—and you’re not imagining it. Many women develop symptoms related to Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ or TMD) and assume it’s just part of aging. But TMJ pain is not something you have to live with. Relief is possible—at any age.
What
The temporomandibular joints connect your jaw to your skull. TMJ disorder occurs when there’s dysfunction in this system of muscles, joints, and ligaments. Symptoms range from mild clicking to severe pain, difficulty chewing, headaches, or even ringing in the ears.
Women over 50 are particularly prone to TMD due to factors like stress, hormone changes, arthritis, or long-term teeth grinding. Many go undiagnosed, mistaking symptoms for sinus issues or tension headaches.
Dr. Kellye Rice is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, a Diplomate of the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, and a graduate of Airway Health Solutions, dedicated to the ongoing care of children and adults with airway and breathing problems.
• Jaw pain or tenderness
• Clicking or popping in the jaw
• Difficulty chewing or yawning
• Headaches or earaches
• Neck or shoulder stiffness
• Locking of the jaw
If these sound familiar, it might be time to take a closer look.
Why
TMJ symptoms can be confusing and easy to dismiss—especially if you’re busy juggling work, caregiving, or a major life transition. Many believe surgery is the only fix, but that’s simply not true. Most cases respond well to conservative, non-invasive treatment.
Custom
TMJ-specialized dentists use 3D imaging and thorough exams to diagnose and create custom treatment plans. This may include a comfortable, personalized mouthpiece to realign the jaw, medications like antiinflammatories or muscle relaxants, and advanced therapies like laser treatments and trigger point injections. Screening for sleep apnea after 50 can also uncover underlying issues.
Self-Care at Home
TMJ dentists often recommend gentle jaw exercises, warm or cold compresses, and a soft-food diet during flare-ups. Red light therapy—especially when guided by a professional—has shown promise in reducing inflammation and pain. Avoiding habits like chewing gum or resting your chin in your hand can also help. And remember this key phrase: “Lips together, teeth apart.”
Physical
Chiropractors or craniosacral therapists can improve jaw alignment with hands-on techniques, massage, and dry needling. Stress is a major contributor, so incorporating meditation, yoga, or therapy can ease both emotional and physical tension that impacts the jaw.
Living with TMJ pain can take a toll, but it doesn’t have to be your new normal. If you’ve been suffering in silence, know that help is available. Talk to your dentist or seek out a TMJ specialist who can guide you toward lasting relief.

BIG FUTURE PLANS FOR NASHVILLE SHORES?
Nashville Shores is in the midst of a significant transformation, evolving from a local waterpark into a regional destination. The property now features a wide range of attractions, including a waterpark, ziplines, a ropes course, an RV campground, lakeside cabins, a marina, boat rentals, and more. Situated on nearly 400 acres along Percy Priest Lake, the resort has developed only about 45 acres to date, leaving substantial room for future growth. Plans are underway to invest in all aspects of the property, with continued expansion and enhancement of the waterpark, lodging, marina, and other amenities.
In addition to building on existing features, Nashville Shores is also exploring new entertainment options aimed at attracting a broader audience. The longterm goal is to establish the property as a world-class, family-oriented destination that draws visitors from across the region and beyond.

Let’s be honest: no one wakes up and says, “Today feels like a good day to deal with a lice outbreak!” But when the scratching starts and panic sets in, there’s one unlikely place in Middle Tennessee where families are actually... brace yourselves...relieved to be spending an afternoon. That place? Lice Clinics of America--Williamson County, where bug battles are fought with science, style, and just enough Southern charm to make you forget you're in a lice clinic.
“We get it,” says Joe West, owner of the Nashville and Huntsville locations. “Nobody wants to be here. But once they are, they usually don’t want to leave.”
For the hour or two it takes to get checked, treated, and restored to bug-free glory, West and his team make sure the entire experience feels a little less like an infestation and a little more like checking into the world’s quirkiest day spa.
“When a family walks through our doors, we never know exactly what we’re going to get,” Joe explains. “Some parents have tried every home remedy from mayonnaise to peanut butter. Others aren’t even sure if it’s lice or just a bad case of dandruff. Our first job is to assess the situation, calmly, kindly, and quickly.”
It all starts with a screening using a clinic strength comb and a bowl of water (seriously) to look for “tiny black dots that float like pepper flakes. If we see them, it means we’ve got a live case,” West says.
Now here’s where things get high-tech. Lice Clinics of America uses a sleek FDA-Cleared medical device called the AirAllé, which dehydrates lice and their eggs in one go.
“It doesn’t matter if someone has ten lice eggs or a thousand,” Joe says. “The treatment is just as effective. And the best part? It’s one-and-done. No need to come back unless you just want to hang out.”
The treatment takes about one hour per person, which might sound like a nightmare for squirmy kids, but not here. The rooms are kid-approved with toys, cartoons, and snacks. Yes, snacks. And if your child wants to help time the treatment steps? Even better. “It keeps them distracted and makes them feel like they’re part of the mission,” West adds.
One of the first things Joe and his team do is un-teach all the frantic Googling parents do before they show up.
Their silver lining? “They hadn’t been home in a week so their house was totally lice-free. We told them to go home, nap, and skip the deep clean,” he adds.
For repeat offenders—or let’s say, families with active little socialites—Lice Clinics of America offers something genius: lice insurance. “We call it a membership program,” Joe says, “but honestly, it’s insurance for your peace of mind. Lice isn’t usually covered by health insurance, but this covers treatment, regular screenings, and lets parents stop living in fear of headto-head contact at soccer practice.”
"Our first job is to assess the situation, calmly, kindly, and quickly.”
“Everyone thinks they got lice from a hat, or a pillow, or a stuffed animal,” he says. “In reality, lice need head-to-head contact. That’s it. They don’t jump, fly, or plan strategic attacks on your living room furniture.”
Also: please stop sanitizing your dog. “Pets don’t carry lice,” Joe says. “We’ve seen people shampoo everything in their house. It’s just not necessary.”
The Lice Clinics of America team has no shortage of stories, but one stands out. “A family once flew in straight from a cruise. They hadn’t slept all night. They were itchy, delirious, and laughing about the whole thing. Honestly, they were a blast to treat,” says Joe.
The clinic especially recommends it for girls between the ages of 7 and 12, statistically the most at-risk lice demographic. (“Sorry, tweens,” Joe laughs.)
The takeaway? Getting lice is not a moral failing, it’s a mathematical probability, especially if you live with kids who think personal space is optional. And if you do get lice, there’s a team in Nashville ready to greet you with empathy, expertise, and maybe a granola bar.
“We tell every patient: the problem stops today,” Joe says. “Our goal is to make sure people walk out feeling relieved, confident, and maybe even a little entertained.”

John Mayer, Kings of Leon Headline The Iconic Two-Day Music & Cultural Festival
ARTICLE BY MARIA DINOIA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
John Mayer is a GRAMMY® Award-winning artist, celebrated songwriter, and iconic guitar player. In addition to selling over 20 million albums worldwide and gathering billions of streams to date, he has garnered seven GRAMMY® Awards, including Song of the Year for “Daughters,” and has earned a record seven U.S. No. 1s on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart and 25 entries on the Hot Rock Songs chart, the most for any solo artist. In 2015, Dead & Company was founded, with Mayer on lead guitar as well as vocals, and quickly became one of the most successful bands, including a highly successful, 48-show residency at Sphere in Las Vegas. In addition, $15+ million has been raised to support nonprofits and environmental and social causes. In 2021, Sob Rock, Mayer’s eighth studio album was released to critical acclaim featuring the hits, “Last Train Home” and “Wild Blue.” In November 2023, Life With John Mayer launched - an exclusive, 24/7, yearround SiriusXM channel curated and presented by the man himself.
Hailed for her “powerhouse vocals” by People magazine, singer-songwriter Maggie Rose recently released her widely acclaimed album, No One Gets Out Alive. Nominated for a GRAMMY Award for Best Americana Album, Rolling Stone named it one of the best albums of 2024, calling it“ dazzling” and “cathartic.” Billboard added that it’s “superb” and American Songwriter said it’s “moving” and “triumphant.” With memorable TV performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, CBS Saturday Morning and NBC’s Today, Rose continues to grow her ever-expanding fan base. She was recently nominated for Emerging Act of the Year for the 2025 Americana Music Association’s Honors and Awards ceremony. Rose also hosts her own podcast, SaluteThe Songbird , and recently announced a new Season 4.
Arriving on the heels of her fifth solo album Mother Road—a 2023 LP that marked her most fiercely visionary work to date—Medicine came to life soon after the release of This Is Somewhere, the 2007 sophomore effort from her former band Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. After stumbling upon a video of Potter delivering an a cappella rendition of the title track from the band’s 2005 debut Nothing but the Water, producer T. Bone Burnett didn’t hesitate when approached about working with Potter. Over the course of its 12 songs, Medicine achieves a hypnotic power thanks to the charmed interplay between Potter’s shapeshifting voice and the sonic exploration of her collaborators. Since the making of Medicine, Potter has forged a formidable career that’s included sharing the stage with the likes of Robert Plant, Allman Brothers Band, the Rolling Stones, and Mavis Staples, in addition to earning three Grammy nominations.
Since their debut in 2003, Kings of Leon (Caleb (guitar/vocals), Nathan (drums), Jared (bass) and Matthew Followill (guitar) have released nine albums, selling over 20 million albums and nearly 40 million singles worldwide. The multi-platinum-selling band has had five singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, all nine of their studio albums on Billboard’s Top 200 list and two singles that reached #1 on Modern Rock radio. With the release of 2016’s WALLS, the band garnered its first-ever number one album debut on the Billboard Top 200. In addition, they have had eight Grammy Nominations, four Grammy Award wins, three NME Awards, two Brit Awards, and one Juno Award. They have toured all over the world, playing at top venues and headlining major festivals. The band released their highly anticipated ninth full-length studio album, Can We Please Have Fun , in May via Capitol Records and hit over 25 cities on their recent world tour in support of the critically acclaimed album.
Songs, albums, live performances—some are simply timeless. From their early roots, circa 1988, playing house parties at Louisiana State University, Better Than Ezra has made its mark on the music world in a major way. Yes, the New Orleans quartet, founded by Kevin Griffin [lead vocals, guitar, piano] and Tom Drummond [bass, backing vocals], who unleash hummable melodies, unshakable guitar riffs, and confessional lyrics, have stood the test of time— from1995’s #1 hit “Good” all the way to Taylor Swift’s famous 2010 cover of the Better Than Ezra classic “Breathless.” And they’re still going strong: in May 2024, the band released their long-anticipated tenth studio album Super Magick via Round Hill Records. Named one of the “100 Greatest Alternative Artists of All Time” by Billboard, with a legacy that includes inspiring a classic Saturday Night Live skit, Better Than Ezra continues tacking on career-defining accomplishments as they celebrate the 30th anniversary of the album that started it all, Deluxe.

Since their 2014 debut When I Was Younger which featured the breakout single “Silhouettes”—the #1 most-played track on Sirius XM’s Alt Nation for four consecutive months—Colony House has become an influential voice in modern indie rock. Their 2017 follow up, Only the Lonely, expanded their sonic palette, fusing vintage surf rock with heartfelt storytelling. The standout track “You Know It” became a viral hit on TikTok and Instagram Reels, and its inclusion in the global Samsung Mobile campaign helped propel it past 100 million streams.
Pioneers of the Red Dirt music scene and one of America’s most beloved bands, Turnpike Troubadours has amassed a huge following throughout their renowned career with more than 2.2 billion streams globally and over 1.7 million equivalent units sold. Since their debut in 2005, the band has released seven studio albums, performed countless sold-out headline shows, appeared in Paramount’s hit show “Yellowstone” and were inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame. Most recently, Turnpike Troubadours added to their historic career with the release of their new surprise album,The Price of Admission , which debuted at #1 on the iTunes all-genre and country charts and earned them their highest Spotify chart debuts to date. The eagerly awaited follow up to their widely acclaimed 2023 album, A Cat in the Rain , The Price of Admission further cements the band as an undeniable force in the music world and led Whiskey Riff to declare “Turnpike Troubadours have continued to prove time and time again that they are the greatest band of all time.” Originally from Tahlequah, OK, Turnpike Troubadours is Evan Felker (vocals, guitar), Kyle Nix (fiddle), Ryan Engleman (electric guitar), RC Edwards (bass), Gabe Pearson (drums) and Hank Early (steel, accordion.)

In February 2020, just before the world came to a standstill, Colony House released Leave What’s Lost Behind - a cinematic and ambitious album that highlighted the band’s growing creative range. The project culminated in a self-produced full-length feature film, Everybody’s Looking For Some Light, which premiered at two sold-out drive-in events in their hometown of Franklin, Tennessee. Colony House’s fifth studio album, 77, is both a sonic departure and a spiritual arrival.
Colony House has brought their electrifying live sound to some of the country’s most iconic stages and festivals. Their national broadcast appearances include The Today Show, MTV Live, VH1’s Morning Buzz, and multiple appearances on CONAN and Late Night with Seth Meyers, showcasing their ability to translate the power of their live show to the screen.
Primrose School of Cool Springs and Primrose School of East Franklin Support Working Parents with Heart
ARTICLE BY REBECCA FRIZZELL | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
In the heart of Cool Springs, one early childhood school is helping families do more than manage the chaos of daily life. It’s giving them space to grow, connect, and thrive.
At Primrose School of Cool Springs and Primrose School of East Franklin, supporting working parents goes beyond schedules and snacks. Franchise owner Rebecca Frizzell believes in creating a foundation not only for young children, but for the families who care for them.
“We help working parents make the most of their child care experience by offering flexible hours that meet their scheduling needs, a tuition that includes meals and snacks to take the stress out of food prep, and health and safety protocols that will give parents peace of mind while they work,” Frizzell said.
That practical support is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. From the moment
families walk through the doors, Primrose works to build a culture of connection and one where children feel secure, parents feel seen, and teachers feel empowered.
“Our school fosters a sense of belongingness by creating and maintaining an environment where everyone feels included and where similarities and differences are celebrated with kindness and respect,” said Frizzell.
The school’s Balanced Learning® approach blends classroom experiences with family engagement, encouraging parents to take an active role in their child’s development. “Families are invited into the classroom to share their own customs,” Frizzell explained, “and we encourage parents to talk with their child about how their family traditions may be similar to and different from those of their classmates and teachers.”
CONTINUED >
That kind of inclusion, which spans the classroom and the living room, is at the heart of Primrose’s philosophy. For Frizzell, early education is as much about character as it is about curriculum.
“We believe that who children become is as important as what they know,” she said. “That’s why we weave character development into daily lessons that include books, songs, role-playing with the Primrose Friends and so much more.”
Through these daily interactions, children practice kindness, empathy, and responsibility which are traits that will serve them well in and out of the classroom. And while the lessons may be small, the impact is lasting.
Frizzell sees the relationship between teachers and families as a true partnership, one that adapts to each child’s individual needs and personality. “Teachers partner with parents to better understand each child’s strengths and opportunities so they can provide personalized support,” she said. “A child’s first five years are a small window, but they are really the opportunity of a lifetime.”
To help families take full advantage of that window, Primrose focuses on building a strong school-to-home connection. Communication is consistent, and tools like Molly’s Math Bag offer simple ways for parents to bring learning into everyday routines.
“Between daily communication, at-home learning activities like Molly’s Math Bag, and access to classroom resources, our parents have all the tools they need to help their child continue the fun and learning at home,” Frizzell said.
The approach resonates with local parents, who frequently describe the school as a place of warmth, professionalism, and sincere care.
“This school has been a blessing for our family,” shared parent Bethany L. “From the initial meeting they were honest, kind and understanding... Our daughter has made valuable connections with teachers, friends, and parts of our community through being at this school, and as a mother I couldn’t have asked for a better place or people to care for and educate her in Pre-K.”
Another parent, Ashley W., added: “My kids have thrived in their classes, both socially and educationally. I researched many daycares around the area and ultimately kept coming back to Primrose… I appreciate the work they do for our kids and would recommend it to others.”
As Cool Springs continues to grow, the need for thoughtful, community-centered
early childhood education becomes even more important. At Primrose, Frizzell and her team remain focused on what matters most.
“We make the most of [the early years] to help children learn the skills, like curiosity, creativity, confidence and compassion that will serve them for the rest of their lives,” she said.
For families seeking a school that feels more like a community, Primrose School of Cool Springs offers something both simple and profound: a place where values grow, and where the future feels just a little more hopeful.

“I learned very early on that you can take very intense topics and transform them into something fun and imaginative when there’s a story involved.”
As the voice behind Sesame Street’s first Black female Muppet, Gabrielle, four-time Emmy winner Megan Piphus is once again using her talents to inspire the next generation. The Nashville-based ventriloquist and musician has partnered with nonprofit, Saving Our Daughters, co-founded by actress Keke Palmer, to create Cinderella Sweep, a new children’s album that blends music with mentorship.
Released last month, Cinderella Sweep includes the lead single “ABC’s of Me,” featuring YouTube sensation Gracie’s Corner. With contributions from Grammy winners Sir the Baptist and Jay Ivy, and a 50-member “Cinderella Choir” made up of young girls, the project aims to help girls of color navigate self-worth, bullying, and other social challenges through the power of song and story.
"I've worked with Saving Our Daughters (SOD) since 2021, I believe, as a mentor," says Piphus. "SOD finds mentors that mentor the girls in the arts and they call them Celebrity Godparents, and the girls are called Cinderellas. It's all the fairy tale theme, which is really sweet. As I started working on my next children's album, I was writing a song called "Stop Me Now." And in writing the song, I realized the audience for and the message of the song would be directed toward young girls. And I thought, 'What if I could actually get young girls on this album through Saving Our Daughters? And so I reached out to their founder and proposed the idea of us doing the album together. The girls recorded on five of the songs for the album, and they all got recording experience in a studio, which was amazing. Many of them had never sung before, let alone been in a studio. So it was wonderful to give them the empowerment to try something new."
The songs cover topics such as self-esteem and bullying. "Since I was very young, my purpose in the arts and in performing has been in sharing a message," says Piphus. "And so since I was 10 years old, at my very first performance at my elementary school, my first performance was about God's love. So mind you, my teacher at this
performance had just asked me to share what I learned in front of the class, basically share how I had done ventriloquism, but I decided to turn it into a whole other thing. I wrote a two-page script about God's love and salvation. And so I was using my puppet to talk about something really intense for kindergartners and first-graders, but they loved it. So I learned very early on that you can take very intense topics and transform them into something fun and imaginative when there's a story involved. And so we've done that same thing with this album."
"One of the songs on the album that talks about self-esteem is called "Magic in My Skin"," continues Piphus. And the lyrics are, 'I've got magic in my skin, a radiant glow from within, I'm a ten.' It's talking about loving the color of your skin and how it radiates from the rays from the sun, and it changes colors. And the song is talking about looking at yourself in the mirror and telling yourself that you're a ten. It tackles very intense topics of self-esteem and overcoming prejudice. But the girls love the song and then sang it at the top of their lungs in the studio, which was so beautiful. The majority of the girls that were on the album are girls of color. And so it was really important for me to share a song with them that encourages them to be confident in who they are."
"I also hope that they take away that they can dream their wildest dreams without limitations. We lined them up one by one and asked them what they want to be when they grow up. And you'd think that after doing a full album recording in a studio with platinum records on the wall and Grammy Award-winning producers, they'd be like, 'I want to be an artist now.' But the girls were inspired to do anything. One by one they said, 'I want to be a judge. I want to be a chief financial officer. I want to be a baker. So they were encouraged and inspired to do anything without limitation."
Piphus graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Master of Science in Finance but has been entertaining and performing since she was 10 years old. "I started
puppetry and ventriloquism when I was 10 years old as an art form, but I had been playing with puppets since a very young age," says Piphus. "I was just inspired by the ability to bring something to life with your own voice. Growing up playing with Barbie dolls and all kinds of toys with imaginative play, but when I learned puppetry, it allowed me to share that playtime with other people and bring people of all ages into a world of imagination."
That world of imagination lead her to Sesame Street. "We just wrapped season 56 of Sesame Street, says Piphus. "It's been amazing. And I'm so grateful to be able to work on a show with such an incredible legacy. Within my first couple of days on set, I was able to see exactly why the show has been around for so long - their pursuit of excellence in everything that they do. Every line, every word is set with intention to educate and empower kids to be smarter and stronger."

THE LOCAL SPIRIT BEHIND SOUTHEAST FINANCIAL CREDIT UNION
For Jeff Dahlstrom, being rooted in the community means more than just having a local address. It’s about showing up, giving back, and truly connecting with the people Southeast Financial serves every day.
1. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO SOUTHEAST FINANCIAL TO BE "ROOTED IN THE COMMUNITY," ESPECIALLY HERE IN WILLIAMSON COUNTY AND MIDDLE TN?
Our roots run deep in Middle Tennessee, dating back to 1936, when local workers pooled their money to form a small credit union to help each other in need. That simple, basic philosophy drives us today. We want to assist our members with all things financial and be a presence in the communities we serve.
2. CAN YOU SHARE SOME WAYS YOUR TEAM IS INVOLVED LOCALLY THROUGH SPONSORSHIPS, VOLUNTEER WORK, OR PARTNERSHIPS WITH COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS?
Throughout the year, we sponsor events such as food, literacy, and blood drives at our branches, which our members participate in. We also encourage our team members to be involved in other ways by providing a paid Volunteer Day each year to participate in charitable activities where they might have a personal connection.
3. HOW DO YOUR COMMUNITY INITIATIVES REFLECT YOUR MEMBERS' VALUES AND SOUTHEAST FINANCIAL'S CULTURE AS A WHOLE?
"People helping people" has been a philosophy associated with credit unions since the movement began. Our members support our efforts each year, whether collecting toys for children at Christmas or supplies to make a Thanksgiving meal. We may be the collection point for the charity, but our members are the ones who make the difference.
4. IS THERE A PARTICULAR EVENT OR MOMENT IN THE COMMUNITY THAT STANDS OUT AS ESPECIALLY MEANINGFUL OR MEMORABLE FOR YOUR TEAM?
That would be our Southeast Financial Golf Classic. We're in our 23rd year, and since 2010, we've given back over $254,000 to charities in our community. Again, funds will benefit Hope Clinic for Women and United Cerebral Palsy of Middle Tennessee this year. Working with these groups each year, we see first-hand their impact on the community through their valuable services. It takes a lot of work, but it's a day of fun, and we get to share time with the charities and local vendors while, at the same time, making a difference.
5. WHEN IS THIS YEAR'S EVENT?
This year's event is on September 22 at the Towhee Club in Spring Hill, Tennessee. Even though we're at a new location this year, we're proud to have our event still here in Williamson County.
6. HOW DO YOUR LOCAL BRANCHES GO BEYOND BANKING TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH MEMBERS IN FRANKLIN AND ACROSS MIDDLE TN?
We know we have the best team members because our credit union members tell us every chance they get. Whether it's a Google review or through a member survey, a comment we hear over and over is how members feel like family. When you get to know your members, you better understand their financial needs and can help find solutions to meet their financial goals.

“‘People helping people’ has been a philosophy associated with credit unions since the movement began.”
7. IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU SEE SOUTHEAST FINANCIAL EVOLVING ITS ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY AS WILLIAMSON COUNTY CONTINUES TO GROW AND CHANGE?
Over the years, people's needs have changed. Part of the evolution is how they bank. The most important part of keeping up with that change is offering members the latest technology to meet their banking needs while providing products and services relevant to their everyday lives. For example, we're currently offering a personal loan with a special rate where members get to choose the purpose of the loan. It's their loan, their way.
8. HOW DOES BEING A CREDIT UNION VERSUS A TRADITIONAL BANK ENHANCE YOUR ABILITY TO SUPPORT AND CONNECT WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY?
As I mentioned before, it all starts with people and building relationships. Even though we like to offer the latest banking technology, we still want to create that small-town banking experience where we call you by name when you walk in the door. SoutheastFinancial.org

HOW ANIMALS HELP US CONNECT WITH THE PAST AND PRESENT
Animals have long held a sacred place in human hearts, not only as companions, but as emotional messengers, healers and quiet witnesses to our most tender moments. Whether helping us feel the presence of loved ones who have passed or strengthening the bonds with those still by our side, animals have a unique ability to draw us into deeper connection. Their language is not made of words, but of presence, intuition and love.
We are truly blessed to have our animal companions; they enrich our lives every day. At The Gentle Barn, we are forever grateful to have known, loved and cared for so many animals — and to share them with you.
The Gentle Barn, our national nonprofit organization founded in 1999, not only provides sanctuary to animals rescued from severe abuse and neglect, but also offers programs where individuals engage with animals to foster empathy, trust and healing.
Our signature programs, including Cow Hug Therapy®, focus on creating powerful, therapeutic interactions between humans and animals. Visitors and
participants — often underserved youth, individuals with special needs, trauma survivors or those in recovery — are invited into a space of safety and non-judgment. There, they engage with our rescued animals through hands-on experiences like grooming, feeding, walking and simply being present.
Through these programs, The Gentle Barn doesn’t just promote healing — it models it. Every animal's story becomes a teaching moment about resilience, forgiveness and love.
John Lewis came to us orphaned, sick, sad and broken. My husband and co-founder, Jay Weiner, and I stopped at nothing to save him. Thank goodness bringing him into the house and making him a part of our family paid off, because he made it. We could not save his mom, but we named her in a naming auction. Out of the hundreds of names we could have pulled from the bowl, the name that was selected was “Love.”
Everything John Lewis does — every heart he opens, every life he touches, every person he inspires, every

cookie he eats, every game that he plays, every friend that he meets — he is doing it all for Love. His mom is always here with us, watching over Lewis, experiencing the kindness he is receiving that she never did, and living this life with him in spirit. I hope that she knows that when we love him, we are loving her at the same time.
Einstein never knew love at all, only the cold glare of people who were raising him for food and could not see his soul. Dreaming of a better life, Einstein escaped and lived feral for three years alone. He had no shelter from the rain, was covered in ticks and was always on guard, ready to escape should anyone approach.
By the time we found out about him, it was the dead of winter, and he was cold and exhausted. We set up a feeding station with food and warm water at the same time each day. Little by little, we enclosed it with a fence that helped us finally catch him. For months, I talked to him and described the life he would have at The Gentle Barn. I told him of the friends he would make, the family he would have, the warm barn, the fresh food, the clean water and the gentle hands.
I am grateful to have been able to fulfill those promises, keep my word to him and show him that love does exist — so he could experience it every day for the rest of his life before his passing.
The only thing Worthy did have was love. She had no food, water, shelter or human kindness. Her leg was grossly deformed, and she was hobbling around in pain. There was no one to help her. But she did have her mom and brother to protect her and keep her company. When we rescued Worthy and brought her to the hospital to have surgery to fix her leg, it was the love of her mom that kept her strong enough to endure the lengthy surgery and recovery. Worthy now has everything all animals deserve: good food, fresh water and kind humans. She also has the love of her family always with her as she gallops around our pastures and through our woods, feeling safe, happy and full of life.
Love is what we all have in common. Whether we’ve had it all along, inherited it from our animal companions or discovered it at The Gentle Barn, love connects us all and lifts us up. Love heals our hearts, propels us forward and gives us hope for the future. And at The Gentle Barn, love is not just something we say — it is a verb that we practice each and every day.
We extend our love to you, too, as part of our gentle family, and want to thank you so very much for loving us, supporting us and enabling us to save, rehabilitate and provide sanctuary to all our animals. Thank you for loving us, so we can love them, and they can love you.

PERSONALIZED PROTECTION AND PEACE OF MIND
In Williamson County, where family ties run deep and neighbors feel more like friends, Shellnut Insurance has become a trusted part of the community’s fabric.
For generations, Shellnut Insurance has served Middle Tennessee with a commitment that goes far beyond policies and paperwork. Founded on principles of personal connection, community involvement, and genuine care, the agency remains a fixture in Williamson County not just for what it provides, but for how it shows up.
“We’ve done our best to create a culture centered on trust, relationships, and community,” said Gavin Shellnut,
they know by name when they need help,” Tyler said. “We offer something technology can’t replicate. Genuine relationships and personal accountability.”
Shellnut Insurance is more than a provider, it’s a partner, especially during life’s unexpected turns. From house fires and car accidents to the loss of a loved one, the team’s support extends beyond claims.
“One of the most meaningful parts of this job is being there for clients when life throws the unexpected at them,” Gavin said. “We’ve had clients call us completely overwhelmed. We’re able

who co-leads the family-owned agency with his parents, Eric and Teresa, as well as brother, Tyler. “Working with families over generations gives us a unique understanding of the people we serve, not just their insurance needs, but their values, priorities, and way of life.”
That local legacy informs every aspect of the Shellnuts’ approach.
In an age where large national providers and automated platforms promise convenience, many families in Williamson County continue to choose the personal touch of a hometown agency.
“People here value trust, consistency, and being able to call someone
to step in, walk them through next steps, and get them the support they need quickly and compassionately.”
That sense of reliability is part of what makes Shellnut Insurance unique. As a multi-generational business, the agency has walked with families through every season of life, buying their first homes, launching businesses, weathering natural disasters, and preparing for retirement.
“That kind of longevity means clients know we’ll be here for whatever comes next,” Tyler said. “We’re in the second generation of our family business, and we don’t plan on going anywhere.”

While the Shellnuts remain firmly rooted in tradition, they’ve also kept pace with the changing landscape of the insurance world. Their team combines timeless values with modern coverage, ensuring each client receives the best of both.
“We pride ourselves on real, local people answering the phone and returning your call,” Gavin said. “At the same time, we’ve evolved with the industry to offer the most up-to-date coverage options. Our goal is to make insurance simple and approachable, especially as life changes.”
That personalized approach is key to how Shellnut Insurance serves such a wide range of clients, from new homeowners and young families to retirees. No matter where someone is in life, the Shellnut team meets them with clarity and care.
“We take the time to understand each client’s unique situation, then walk them through their options in plain, practical terms,” Tyler said. “It’s not just about policies, it’s about peace of mind.”
Being part of the community is not just a business strategy for the Shellnuts. It’s a way of life. The agency supports a number of local nonprofits and causes, including GraceWorks Ministries, A Vintage Affair, and My Friend’s House.
“Williamson County has given so much to our family and our business,” said
Gavin. “Giving back to this community is something we feel deeply committed to.”
As the Shellnut family grows both in business and at home, they remain anchored by the same values that built their reputation: integrity, service, and family. Gavin and his wife, Hannah, recently welcomed their daughter, Greer, in November 2024. Tyler and his wife, Sophie, are parents to two children— Vivian, age two, and newborn son Wells, born in April 2025.
Asked what advice they’d offer someone new to the area who’s looking for the right insurance partner, the Shellnuts say it’s all about choosing someone who knows the community as well as the coverage.
“Look for an agency that doesn’t just know insurance, but truly knows this community,” Tyler said. “You want someone who’s seen the growth, weathered the storms, and helped neighbors through it all.”
In a region known for its southern hospitality and neighborly spirit, Shellnut Insurance stands as a testament to the lasting power of local service, built on relationships that span lifetimes.
Because in Williamson County, trust isn’t given. It’s earned, one family at a time.

AND THIS WILL BE THE BAND'S SECOND APPEARANCE? (THE FIRST ONE BEING 30 YEARS AGO IN 1996.)
Our 2026 performance will mark the 30th anniversary of our 1996 inaugural appearance. It is truly special - we actually have several Franklin High School faculty, former band parents, and community members who were part of that historic 1996 parade, and now we have a current parent who marched in the 1996 appearance with two of their children who will be marching in the 2026 appearance. These generational and community connections make this opportunity even more meaningful for our program.
THE BAND IS WORKING TO RAISE CLOSE TO THE $1 MILLION NEEDED TO ATTEND. WHERE ARE YOU IN REACHING THAT GOAL?
One of our core values is to be inclusive, and we hope to allow as many band members to go as possible. We have several fundraising efforts underway, from the car wash we hosted in late April to our upcoming Disney Vacations Raffle, as well as our Singer Songwriter Night on August 2nd and our upcoming throwback fruit sale. Here's an interesting fact - the fruit sale actually funded a significant amount of our 1996 trip, so we're bringing back that successful fundraiser for this journey as well.
“We
our students, families, and the broader Franklin community.”
we'll be there from December 28, 2025 through January 3, 2026, providing lodging, transportation, and meals for potentially 200+ people, plus all the logistical costs of getting our instruments and equipment there safely, the cost becomes quite ambitious - coming in close to $1 million dollars.
We'll depart Nashville on a commercial flight on December 28, arriving in Los Angeles to begin an unforgettable journey where our students will be spending New Year's with 250 of their closest friends.
When you break down what it takes to get a marching band of this size to California, the expenses add up quickly. The total cost includes a trailer to haul all our equipment and instruments across the country, flights for what we hope will be over 200 band members, chaperones and staff expenses, meals for the entire group throughout the trip, and many other costs associated with moving such a large group. When you consider
Our key highlights include performing in the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day, as well as our marching show performance at Bandfest on December 29-30 - where all the parade bands perform field exhibitions. We'll also get to tour the float decorating space, which gives us a chance to see the floats up close and appreciate the incredible detail and workmanship that makes them so spectacular.
Beyond the parade performances, we have some amazing experiences planned: a parade performance at
Disneyland, time at Universal Studios, time at Santa Monica Pier, and a performance in the Bands of America Band Preview. We'll also take a picture at the historic Rose Bowl Stadium. While we've built in some sightseeing and fun activities, this is definitely a working trip focused on giving our students these incredible performance opportunities and memories that will last a lifetime.
THE FRANKLIN BAND HAS RECEIVED MANY ACCOLADES OVER THE YEARS. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE SECRET TO YOUR SUCCESS?
I believe it comes down to our core values that guide everything we do, but first I have to acknowledge the incredible community that has supported us since our inception in 1937. The overwhelming support of our administrators over the years and the strong leadership of past band directors have laid the foundation for the legacy of The Franklin Band that we're continuing today.
“We’d
band, or chamber ensembles. But perhaps most importantly, we never forget that enjoyment is at the heart of what we do. When students love what they're doing and feel supported by their community, that's when the magic happens. These values have been the foundation of our eight Tennessee Governor's Cup championships, our Sudler Shield recognition, and all the other honors we've received over the years.
We focus on community and building strong relationships and support systems among our students, families, and the broader Franklin community. We strive for excellence in everything we do, while honoring our rich history and the legacy of those who came before us. We're not afraid to challenge ourselves and our students to reach new heights and we embrace versatility, whether that's marching band, concert
We'd love your help in making this dream a reality for our students. We welcome donors and corporate partners who want to help us represent the city of Franklin and state of Tennessee on this national stage. You can also send a check to Franklin High School Band Boosters, 2020 Fieldstone Parkway, Ste 900-236, Franklin, TN 37069 - just be sure to include "Tournament of Roses" in the memo line. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us get closer to giving these incredible students the experience of a lifetime.

In Franklin, dogs aren’t just welcome—they’re VIPs (Very Important Pups). From dog-friendly dining spots and scenic walking trails to delightful dog parks and a nationally recognized pet program, Franklin knows how to make life better for pets and their people.
At the heart of Franklin’s pet-friendly spirit is the Better Cities for Pets™ program, launched by Mars Petcare North America, which is headquartered in Franklin. This national initiative helps cities become more welcoming to pets through thoughtful planning and inclusive policies. Franklin served as the program’s pilot city in 2017 and later officially received “Pet-Friendly City” certification. Pet-friendly patios, parks, and businesses are everywhere you look.
If you’ve ever had brunch at Scout’s Pub in Westhaven, you know exactly what we mean. (Fun fact: Scout’s is named after the founder’s own beloved dog.) Their shaded patio is essentially a social club for dogs and their owners. Staff brings out water bowls faster than you can say “Sit,” offers a dog-friendly menu, and it’s not uncommon for spontaneous pup playdates to pop up mid-brunch.
Downtown Franklin offers even more options for pet parents. Leashed dogs are welcome at many establishments, including Frothy Monkey,
McCreary’s Irish Pub, and Gray’s on Main. Hank’s Coffee Station in Franklin and Tupelo Honey in Cool Springs are also great places to dine with your dog by your side.
Shopping with your sidekick? You’re in luck. Pet-friendly shops are numerous along Main Street, and Fork of South in The Factory at Franklin offers a spacious outdoor patio, perfect for a post-shopping pup break.
For more zoomies and tail wags, head to The K-9 Korral at Harlinsdale Farm. This four acre off-leash park has plenty of space to roam, separate areas for big and small dogs, and shaded seating for owners. It’s also home to events like Dog Days of Summer, a community celebration featuring splash pools, agility zones, local pet vendors, and an energy that says: “Yes, your dog is the main character today.”
Prefer a relaxed vibe? Leashed dogs are welcome on the walking trails at Pinkerton Park, Aspen Grove Park, and along the Eastern Flank Battlefield Park, making Franklin’s green spaces ideal for peaceful strolls or energetic jogs.
Franklin’s love for dogs shines even brighter during its community events. The Franklin Lions Club’s Patriotic Pet Parade invites costumed pups and their people to march through historic downtown, showing off their stars, stripes, and snazzy bandanas. The Howl-O-Ween Hootenanny, hosted by the Williamson County Animal Center, brings out the best-dressed dogs in town for a celebration of rescue, community, and creativity.
Even visitors traveling with furry companions are taken care of at the Harpeth Hotel, right in the heart of downtown. Offering
stylish, pet-friendly accommodations just steps from all the action, you’ll both feel right at home.
And if you’re ready to connect with other pup-loving locals, there’s even more good news: A Franklin Dog Meet-Up Group may be in the works. A local dog lover and rescue/foster advocate is seeking input on starting a Franklin Dog Meet-Up Group (because fetch is more fun with friends!). Whether you're new to town or just want to socialize your fur baby, this could be a great way to sniff out new friendships. Interested? Reach out to Melodee at LolaTheFosterFail@ gmail.com to help bring this tail-wagging idea to life.
From national recognition to wag-worthy hangouts, Franklin proves that being dog-friendly isn’t just a feature, it’s a lifestyle. So don’t be surprised if your coffee run turns into a puppy meetand-greet, or your dinner includes a side of Labrador love.
Frankl(in)y, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
• Pilot City: Franklin was the first pilot city for the Better Cities for Pets™ program, launched in 2017
• Home Base: The program was created by Mars Petcare North America, headquartered right here in Franklin.
• Nationwide Impact: What began locally has expanded to nearly 200 certified pet-friendly cities across North America, with over $2 million in grants awarded supporting community-based pet initiatives.
• Core Belief: The program is rooted in the idea that pets make the world a better place, and cities should reflect that.
• Four Key Pillars: Focus areas include homes, shelters, parks and public spaces, and businesses.
• Local Leadership: Franklin’s collaborative approach set the standard, weaving pet-friendliness into planning, business, and civic life.
• Tool Development: Resources like the Pets Welcome Toolkit, signage, and public space guides were developed and tested in Franklin.
• Global Expansion: Today, these tools are helping cities worldwide through partnerships like C40 Cities.
Thanks to Franklin’s leadership and community spirit, Better Cities for Pets™ is no longer just a pilot; it’s a proven model. And it all started in Franklin.
Small-town Charm + Big City Appeal
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARIA
Tucked between Atlanta and the Alabama border, and a four and half hour drive from Franklin, LaGrange, Georgia, is a Southern gem that blends small-town charm with big cultural appeal. Known for its rich history, a thriving arts and music scene, culinary abundance, and scenic lake views, LaGrange is a relaxing weekend getaway steeped in both heritage and hospitality. The list of things to do is long! It's worth it to stop by the city's bougie visitor center. The staff is warm and friendly and willing to share lots about their 30K+ city. But here are just a few highlights that will help you to discover what makes LaGrange a true Georgia treasure. @VisitLaGrange
There's no better place to stay if you want to be smack in the middle of downtown LaGrange. The Courtyard Marriott is located on Lafayette Square, directly across from the fountain square. It's convenient to all of the sights and sounds of a bustling downtown. Enjoy shopping, dining and museums all within walking distance. And if you're feeling more motivated for a good, long walk around town, jump on The Thread, a 12-foot wide path designed for walking, running and biking. It's an ongoing project and new sections are being added every year, with an end goal of over 29 miles. Pocket parks are found throughout the trail system. @thethread_lagrange
Located on Main Street, Venucci's is the place to go for fresh Italian food. Authentic, made-from-scratch menu items combined with the uplifting ambiance, friendly staff and exposed brick walls are all a true complement to any meal.
The Mulberry Street Cemetery is a slice of southern American history serving as the solemn resting place for Civil War veterans, hundreds in unmarked graves and Horace King, the esteemed covered bridge builder. Currently undergoing a $2.7 million restoration project aimed at revitalizing and preserving the cemetery and highlighting its historical significance while honoring those laid to rest there.
3. BIBLICAL HISTORY
CENTER & MULBERRY STREET CEMETERY
The Biblical History Center is a magnificent and immersive walk through life in the ancient Biblical era. The center vividly recreates the spirit of ancient Middle Eastern life with authentic archaeological replicas, engaging Biblical meal presentations, an array of daily-life artifacts and captivating lectures. @biblicalhistoryctr
This historic district was recently renovated and the LaGrange residents like to say where history meets hip. For a taste of history, check out The Callaway Memorial Tower. The tower is patterned after the Campanile of St. Mark’s Square in Venice, Italy. For a taste of hip, check out the boutiques and specialty stores along Lincoln Street. Stop into Beacon Brewing (@beaconbrewingco) for lunch and local brews and venture to Rock Salt Milk Bar for dessert or a sweet treat.
The Callaway name is pretty famous in LaGrange and the 13,000 square foot home purchased in 1916 was once owned by the family. Named for its rolling hills and shady dales, the gardens are a treasured keepsake brought to life by three generations of remarkable women. The 30-room mansion (including nine bedrooms and 10 bathrooms) has preserved much of the charm from the 1916 era.

When Heather and Adam Knauf decided they wanted to pursue a photo booth business, the decision was a natural one. "I’ve always had a love for photography, but I knew traditional photography, with all the hours of editing wasn’t the path for me," says Heather. "I wanted something more interactive and fun. That’s when the idea of a photo booth really clicked. Adam had photography experience but was pursuing his dream of woodworking when I first brought up the idea. It was the perfect blend of both our skills: creativity, design, and capturing moments in a unique way."
The concept behind it was inspired by the couple's own wedding. "I knew I wanted a photo booth at our reception, but quickly realized short notice and limited options available were either out of our budget or just didn’t feel unique enough," says Heather. "That’s really when my wheels started turning about starting a business."
As with photos, Heather says she always loved the idea of taking something nostalgic and giving it a modern twist. "That’s how we found Georgia, our pink and white vintage camper," she says. "The moment I saw her, I knew this was really going to happen. We officially launched InstaBurst Photos in January

2020, completely unaware of the wild ride we were about to go on. By that spring, we had a wedding booked and the couple asked if we had an indoor option. That request led to our Open Air booth and our first four backdrops. Since then we’ve expanded to over 20 unique options, each with its own vibe and style."
"Then came the Pilgrimage Festival," continues Heather. "Georgia was already booked, which opened the door for Adam to chase his dream, restoring a VW bus. We found Jasper in February 2021, and after six months of hard work, he made his debut at Pilgrimage 2021 in the Americana Music Triangle Tent. It was a blast, and now with three distinct booths, we’re able to offer something for every type of event."
In addition to all of the customizing the Knaufs can do for your event, including custom designing your photo overlay template with matching colors, fonts, logos, or theme, along with sending multiple mockups, there are several things that make them different from traditional photo booths. "Either Adam or I are on-site, running the
booth and guiding guests every step of the way., says Heather. "You don’t have to worry if the booth is working. We're hands-on and fully present."
Heather adds, "We also offer on-the-spot printing, instant digital sharing via QR code (Wi-Fi dependent), and an online gallery delivered within 24 hours. It's fast, seamless, and designed to make your event unforgettable."
The Knaufs also aren't afraid to be challenged. "Transforming Jasper was definitely our biggest challenge but also one of our proudest moments," says Heather. "He started off cream-colored and covered in radio stickers. I changed my mind at least twice on the final color. I tried to save money and watch YouTube videos to learn how to reupholster the seats.
Turns out to be a way bigger task than YouTube made it look. I quickly decided upholstering was meant for the professionals and took it in. The final touch was figuring out how to install a new backdrop inside the bus. I wanted something bold and fun, showing off that full 70’s vibe and that’s when I knew it had to be a shimmer wall."
InstaBurst is always seeking new ways to keep the photo booth experience fun and exciting. "We’re always dreaming up what’s next," says Heather. "Right now, our newest offering is the Audio Guestbook. It hasn’t even made it to the website yet. It’s a vintage style phone we bring to your event. Guests pick up the receiver, hear a short personalized message from you, then leave a voicemail after the beep. It’s an incredibly meaningful keepsake, especially as years pass. Hearing a loved one’s voice can bring so much joy."
“I’ve always had a love for photography, but I knew traditional photography, with all the hours of editing wasn’t the path for me,” says Heather.
“I wanted something more interactive and fun. That’s when the idea of a photo booth really clicked.”

As much as I love the coziness of soup and a gooey grilled cheese in the winter, it doesn’t have quite the same appeal when it’s 95 degrees outside. But there’s no reason a summertime version can’t offer comfort on a scorching hot day. Swap winter’s hot soup for a chilled one, and put a twist on the traditional sandwich by adding sun-ripened vegetables. Chilled Avocado Shrimp Soup and Grilled Cheese with Summer Corn and Tomatoes make for a lunch or dinner bursting with the best garden-fresh flavors of the season.
DIRECTIONS:
1. Purée first 5 ingredients in a blender.
2. In a small skillet, melt butter over medium low heat. Sauté shallot 1 minute or until softened.
3.Add to blender with avocado mixture. Pulse 4-5 times. Add salt to taste.
4. Pour into 4 bowls. Top with 7-8 shrimp and chopped bacon. Serve chilled. If preferred, soup can be slightly warmed before adding shrimp and bacon.
Yield: 4 servings
INGREDIENTS:
• 5 Haas avocados sliced in half, pitted, and flesh scooped out
• 2 ½ cups chicken broth
• ¼ cup lime juice
• ½ cup heavy cream
• ¼ teaspoon sugar
• 1 teaspoon butter
• 1 tablespoon chopped shallot
• ½ pound frozen salad shrimp, thawed
• 3 strips bacon, cooked and chopped
DIRECTIONS:
1. In a large cast-iron skillet over high heat, quickly sauté corn kernels until charred in places. Transfer to a large bowl.
2. In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add shallots and green onions.
Stirring constantly, cook 2-3 minutes or until tender. Add garlic and cook 1 minute.
3. Transfer to bowl with corn. Add cheeses, mayonnaise, and cayenne pepper. Stir until blended. Fold in tomatoes. Wipe out skillet.
4. Spread butter on one side of bread slices. Place 6 slices butter side down and top evenly with cheese mixture. Top with remaining bread slices, butter side up.
5. Over medium-low heat in the cast iron skillet, place two sandwiches and cook until golden brown on bottom side. Flip and brown other side. Repeat with remaining sandwiches.
6. Serve immediately.
Yield: 4 sandwiches
INGREDIENTS:
• 1/2 cup fresh corn kernels
• 1 tablespoon butter
• 1 tablespoon finely chopped shallots
• ¼ cup chopped green onions
• ½ teaspoon minced garlic
• 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
• ½ cup shredded Fontina cheese
• ½ cup mayonnaise
• ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
• ½ cup chopped fresh tomatoes
• 6 tablespoons butter, softened
• 8 slices Texas Toast bread
Ireland’s story began more than 12,000 years ago, with early settlements scattered across the island. By 4000 B.C., Neolithic farmers were building monumental tombs like Newgrange, which are older than both the Egyptian pyramids and Stonehenge.
Celtic tribes arrived around 500 B.C., shaping Ireland’s language, mythology and traditions. The Irish language (Gaeilge) and rich folklore still echo through daily life and storytelling.
Centuries of English rule followed, but Ireland’s modern independence took root in the early 20th century. After the 1916 Easter Rising and the War of Independence (1919 to 1921), the Irish Free State was established in 1922. Ireland formally became a republic in 1949.
Travel tip: The Republic of Ireland uses the euro, while Northern Ireland (part of the United Kingdom) uses British pounds.
Dublin: A City Where Old Meets New
Dublin is a vibrant, walkable city where cobblestone streets echo centuries of history, yet modern shops, restaurants and nightclubs pulse with contemporary energy. Much like Nashville, you will find music pouring from lively pubs.
Don’t-Miss Dublin Attractions
Trinity College and the Book of Kells
Home to one of the world’s most celebrated illuminated manuscripts, the eighth-century Book of Kells, Trinity College offers a deep dive into Ireland’s academic and artistic legacy. The intricately illustrated Gospel book is a masterpiece of early medieval art and draws visitors worldwide. A visit to the Old Library’s Long Room, with its barrel-vaulted ceilings and centuries-old books, is awe-inspiring. Guided tours of the
historic college campus provide additional context and insight. The library is undergoing renovation to protect its collection but remains open through 2025.
Dublin Castle
Serving as the center of British rule from 1204 to 1922, the castle’s medieval beginnings were reshaped into the Georgian-style structure known today. Self-guided and guided tours are available, showcasing treasures like Queen Victoria’s throne and Waterford crystal chandeliers.
St. Patrick’s Cathedral
This magnificent 13th-century Anglican cathedral is Ireland’s national cathedral. It is believed to stand on the site where Saint Patrick baptized converts to Christianity. Inside, you’ll find stunning stained glass, a 400-pipe organ and historical relics. This is one of Dublin’s most visited sites, so be sure to book tickets online or arrive early.
Abbey Theatre
Known as Ireland’s national theater, the Abbey offers outstanding productions of Irish drama. For musical theater, check out the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre.
Temple Bar
Often mistaken for a single pub, Temple Bar is actually a central Dublin neighborhood known for its cobblestone streets, pubs, street performers and nightlife. It is the cultural heart of the city and a great place to enjoy live Irish music, local art and a pint. The Temple Bar Pub, the Oliver St. John Gogarty restaurant and the Auld Dubliner are popular places to hear traditional Irish music.
Guinness Storehouse
Take a self-guided or connoisseur-level tour of one of Ireland’s most iconic exports. Learn the history of Guinness, see vintage ads and end your visit with a perfectly poured pint at the Gravity Bar.
Jameson Distillery, Bow Street
While Jameson is now produced in Cork, the original Dublin distillery is a dynamic visitor center. Tours include tastings and storytelling about the brand’s legacy.
Irish Whiskey Museum
This lesser-known gem offers a 45-minute tour ideal for whiskey beginners. You’ll sample three to four Irish whiskeys and learn about the drink’s evolution in Irish culture.
Pack comfortable shoes (and take an umbrella, just in case). Dublin is best experienced on foot. For convenience, the Hop-On Hop-Off bus is a great way to see major sights, and public buses are also easy to use with a Leap Card.
Waterford, Ireland’s oldest city, makes a great halfway point — perfect for stretching your legs, grabbing lunch and browsing local shops before continuing on to Cork, Ireland’s second-largest city. While Cork has the energy of a vibrant university town, it still feels relaxed and walkable, making it a great overnight base if you're heading to the coast or the Cliffs of Moher.
One of Ireland’s most breathtaking natural landmarks. “Moher” derives from the Irish word mothar, meaning ruin or fort. While the cliffs are stunning, timing is key. On rainy days, trails can be muddy and views obscured. Similar to Cheekwood in Nashville, your ticket allows a timed two-hour window.
Beyond the Capital: Ireland’s Lush Countryside
If you're exploring Ireland beyond Dublin, Skerries Mills, Waterford and Cork are ideal stops to soak in the charm of the countryside. Just 30 minutes from Dublin, Skerries Mills offers restored 18th-century windmills, a working watermill and sweeping coastal views. It is a peaceful spot to slow down and take it all in.
No trip to southern Ireland is complete without a stop at Blarney Castle. Home to the legendary Blarney Stone, visitors climb to the top for a chance to kiss the stone and receive the gift of eloquence. Even if you skip the kiss, the castle grounds, complete with a “poison garden,” are worth exploring.
With a population of more than 220,000, Cork’s food scene reflects a mix of creativity and community, making it a memorable stop for both foodies and casual travelers.
• Marine Market: This indoor/outdoor food hall features more than 35 vendors offering everything from Irish fare to international cuisine. Similar to the Assembly Food Hall in Nashville, it is a flexible, family-friendly way to grab a bite and eat together at communal tables.
• Market Lane: A relaxed sit-down restaurant known for fresh, locally sourced ingredients. You’ll find vegetarian options, seafood, hearty meat dishes and great cocktails. Open for lunch and dinner.
Dublin’s food scene is as dynamic as the city itself, ranging from fresh Atlantic seafood and traditional Irish dishes like “coddle” (Irish sausage and potato stew) to a variety of international flavors.
• Trocadero: Dublin’s oldest restaurant, in operation since the late 1950s, is known as the “theater restaurant” for its location near cultural venues. Photos of celebrities who have dined there fill the walls. The refined menu includes seafood and meat dishes, as well as vegetarian options like mushroom pâté.
• Fish Shop: Despite its humble name, this small upscale restaurant is known for excellent fish and chips, oysters and linecaught hake
• Bar Pez: A hip tapas bar featuring Irish produce and seafood. Savor dishes like scallop toast and beef tartare, paired with a wine from the award-winning list.
• The Brazen Head: Ireland’s oldest pub (est. 1198) serves traditional Irish dishes in a historic setting, often with live folk music in the background.
Ireland is a remarkable place to visit, not just for the Guinness, but for its deep-rooted history, vibrant culture and soul-stirring scenery. Whether you are exploring Dublin’s streets or the cliffs of Ireland’s western coast, the Emerald Isle invites you to slow down, look closer and savor every moment.
“The Irish language (Gaeilge) and rich folklore still echo through daily life and storytelling.”
