LIFESTYLE LETTER

Welcome 2024!

January 2024 PUBLISHER

Dr. Seuss and the Dalai Lama have a lot in common. You might ask what exactly. Well, they both give me inspiration in the following two quotes:

Athena West | athena.west@citylifestyle.com

• “Every day is a new opportunity to begin again. Every day is your birthday.” —Dalai Lama • “You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way!” —Dr. Seuss

S O C I AL M E D I A C O O R D I N ATO R

Everybody loves a fresh start and is always full of hope for what the new year holds, and I'm no different. Whether you make new year's resolutions, or simply tell yourself what you want to accomplish this year, we're all the same in wanting to set goals for ourselves and setting ourselves up in the best way possible to achieve them. And that's what we do with our annual January health and wellness issue. Health and wellness isn't just about going to the gym or losing weight. It's also about laughter and pets and cooking and birthing and giving back. Suffice to say, it's a grand umbrella for all the things! And we got them covered this month. Stem cells, foot care, vitamin infusions and varicose veins round out our health and wellness discussion. We even included an article on the benefits of stepping back from your phone and other electronics for the sake of your mental health. I'm in! I'd be remiss not to mention our cover girl, The Barefoot Contessa herself, Ina Garten. She is the keynote speaker at Nashville's Antiques and Garden show this month. She's so beloved so I'm sure the show will be a sellout. As always, I hope you enjoy this issue as you get started on your path to greatness in 2024.

The Dreaded CPAP Machine For Sleep Apnea - Are There Alternatives? Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder that affects millions of people worldwide, causing interruptions in breathing during sleep. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines have long been the gold standard in treating OSA by delivering a steady stream of air to keep airways open. However, not everyone finds CPAP therapy comfortable, and some individuals struggle with using these machines consistently. Fortunately, there are alternative options for managing OSA that may be more suitable for those who dislike or cannot tolerate CPAP machines. 1. Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs) MADs are oral appliances that resemble mouthguards and are designed to reposition the lower jaw and tongue to prevent the airway from collapsing during sleep. These devices are often more comfortable than CPAP machines and are particularly suitable for individuals with mild to moderate OSA. It’s crucial to consult with a sleep specialist or dentist to ensure proper fitting and effectiveness. These mouthpieces are considered to be first-line treatment for mild to moderate sleep apnea and snoring. 2. NightLase Non-surgical Laser Therapy NightLase is a non-surgical laser therapy that utilizes advanced laser technology to address a range of issues, primarily focusing on oral health. It uses the Fotona twin laser LightWalker to provide laser energy is applied to the oral mucosa, promoting collagen contraction and tightening the tissues in the throat. This tightening effect helps to reduce the vibrations that cause snoring and prevents airway obstructions in sleep apnea, leading to improved breathing patterns. 3. Myofunctional Therapy Myofunctional therapy is physical therapy for the tongue to achieve 4 critical goals for proper function of the mouth so that the rest of the body function properly. They are proper nasal breathing, correct swallow pattern, proper lip seal, and correct tongue posture. A trained Myofunctional therapist is the most qualified person to provide this therapy. Not all dental offices provide this service but it is critical to overall health of the mouth. 4. Positional Therapy OSA can be more pronounced when sleeping in specific positions. Positional therapy involves adjusting sleep positions to reduce the severity of OSA. Devices like positional alarms or specialized pillows can help individuals maintain a sleeping position that minimizes airway obstructions. However, this approach may not be effective for those with OSA that occurs regardless of sleep position.

James Richard Savage enlisted in the 11th Tennessee in June of 1861 as a private. Upon his return from battle, his wife, Mary, presented him with a wooden box. On the inside left it reads, “To My Hero Husband” over a wreath of flowers. Mary also attached a hand-sewn battle flag. Because the box has been tightly closed for more than 1OO years, the color of the flag today is as bright and crisp as it was when Savage first received it. LotzHouse.com

ENJOY GOOD FOOD, MUSIC, AND COMMUNITY at Franklin High School’s Taste of Franklin Fundraiser

ARTICLE BY LISA VALENTINE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

H OT SP OT | FO O D + BEVERAGE

There’s no better way to experience some of the best cuisine that Franklin has to offer than at Franklin High School’s Taste of Franklin event. “Taste of Franklin is an incredible community event featuring approximately 20 local restaurant tastings, amazing live music, and a silent auction to raise money for Project Graduation,” explains Franklin High School parent and Taste of Franklin Founder Jordan Beaird. Beaird, a mother of six - with three FHS graduates, two current FHS students, and one future FHS Admiral - came up with the idea as a creative, community-oriented fundraiser for the sophomore class. “The students at Franklin High School raise money to have funds for Project Graduation, which is an all-night grad party in a safe, alcohol and drug-free environment so that students can have a safe celebration after graduation,” explains Beaird. “The sophomore class puts on the Taste of Franklin event every year and the funds are saved for their senior year.” The wildly successful event has sold out every year since its inception in early 2020, boasting more than 500 guests each year. “It’s been a great thing for our whole community to come together,” says Beaird. Attendees can enjoy a variety of bites to eat from some local favorites from around Franklin, including downtown and the Cool Springs area. Each restaurant provides two to three samples of their delicious fare. With a list including MOOYAH, Waldo’s, Jim ‘N Nick’s, Kilwins, Franklin Bakehouse, Garcia’s, Wilco Fusion Grill, Drake’s, Moe’s Southwest Grill, Gigi’s Cupcakes, Taziki’s, Hillsboro Nutrition, Whitney’s Cookies, Sopapilla’s, Sweethaven, North Italia, and more, it is the perfect way to experience some of the best eats in Franklin. It is put on by a committee of sophomore parents that plans the event and the students volunteer onsite to execute it. “This event is known to have incredible student volunteers and support,” says Beaird. “We assign a couple of students to each restaurant booth. They’re able to interact with the chefs and the restaurant owners at the event and it’s actually provided some great job opportunities and business experience for some kids by learning from the restaurant owners on how they run their business and how to set up for events.” In addition to delectable food, the evening also features live music performed by local talent. A lineup of nine singer-songwriters comprised of current Franklin High School students, alumni, and local

singer-songwriters from the community will perform their original songs in the unique-to-Nashville “in-theround” format. Taste of Franklin will also feature a silent auction filled with an array of experiences and gifts including a teen driving course from Brentwood Driver Training, a one-month Row House membership-for-two including 10 guest passes, getaway vacations at both a lake house and a beach house, photography sessions, Sky Zone, and Miles Car Wash gift certificates, a leaf blower, family passes to the Nashville Zoo and the Franklin Theatre, Nashville Predators hockey tickets, and more. “It’s such a fun night to gather with your friends in the community while supporting students at Franklin High School, as well as all these businesses and artists,” says Beaird. “It is a night you don’t want to miss! We are so appreciative of the outpouring of support from local businesses, musicians, and the parent and student volunteers who make this event a huge success year after year,” she says. Taste of Franklin will take place in the Commons at Franklin High School on January 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $35 (ages 5 and under are free) and are available online at GoFan.co. Passionate Primary Care Providers Transforming Lives Meet the team of primary care providers at Physicians Urgent Care: Dr. Chandler Hardman, Dr. Taylor Bush, Mary Kathryn Lunceford, PA-C, and Gary Nardin, PA-C. With over 30 years of combined experience, they are passionate about providing expert patient care.

WHAT IS PRIMARY CARE, AND WHAT IS THE ROLE IT PLAYS IN SOMEONE’S LIFE? Lunceford: My grandad was a “little black bag” doctor, meaning he was everything to everybody in the town where he lived. He used to say that ‘An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.’ That’s what primary care is - it’s preventing things and addressing them early. Hardman: The benefit of primary care is having a trained provider who can screen for disease, prevent illness, and address illnesses when they happen. One of the beauties of primary care is that the provider is expected to look at the big picture, when most of the healthcare system looks in a focused way at what’s going on at the moment. Bush: We also help coordinate your care. It can be very difficult to keep track of everything that you need, and it quickly becomes overwhelming when you have a host of specialists. We reduce the burden on the patient by putting all of those pieces together. HOW DO YOU ESTABLISH TRUST WITH YOUR PATIENTS? Nardin: Make medicine easy for the patient. That’s my philosophy. Be honest and follow through with the things we discuss. Lunceford: Listen and pay attention to what is important to the patient. I have my checklist during a visit, but I want to make sure that I’m getting to the patient’s checklist as well.

ARTICLE PROVIDED | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DEB SCALLY

H OU SE CA LL | P RO FESS ION AL SE RVICE S

It helps them to trust me when they know that the things that are important to them are also important to me. Bush: Through shared decision making. You take what they tell you, you teach them what you know about it, then the outcome is decided on together. You present them with the information they need to make a good decision for themselves about their own health. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB? Lunceford: My favorite visits are when patients come back for a follow-up after starting a medication and their whole life is different. Often, I have patients tell me “I didn’t realize I felt bad, until I felt good.” It’s really gratifying to be the one who found that need and addressed it. Bush: Working as a partner with a patient to both educate and motivate them to care for themselves. They deserve to feel better, and I want to convince them of that. Nardin: Meeting patients, listening to their problems, and working to get them better. That’s what gets me up in the morning. I can’t tell you how many people have been thankful that I took the time to explain something to them. People just need someone to listen to them and really hear what they are saying. HOW DO YOU NAVIGATE PATIENT CARE IN THE ERA OF GOOGLE AND WEB MD? Hardman: There are so many useful things online that patients can use to help themselves. They just need to keep in mind that online tools can provide information, but they don’t provide judgment. They need to rely on their provider to provide judgment and direction. Bush: I think the thing that Google misses is the harm of doing unnecessary treatments or procedures. It’s really based on education, but also staying firm with what you know is the right treatment. Don’t be dismissive but explain why you are doing what you’re doing.

“You take what they tell you, you teach them what you know about it, then the final outcome is decided on together.” — Dr. Taylor Bush

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES OUTSIDE OF THE CLINIC? Nardin: I enjoy gardening, going for walks with my two dogs, and I recently got into beekeeping. Hardman: I like reading, walking, biking, and selective shopping with my wife. We all know what that is. You know what you want, you go and get it, you leave, you go do something important. Bush: I like spending time with my family; my fiancée and his three children. We like to travel quite a bit and I enjoy going to concerts. Lunceford: I’m in a recreational orchestra that has a few concerts a year. I’ve only played one so far, in May. I was eight months pregnant playing violin. PhysiciansUrgentCare.com

Experience the Healing Power Carolyn Collins and Willow/ Photo by Jennifer Bennhoff

Recently we took a walk around Franklin’s Pinkerton Park with Carolyn Collins, a handler with Music City Pet Partners, and her therapy dog, Willow. Music City Pet Partners (MCPP) has 110 members who handle around 120 therapy animals, mostly dogs but also rabbits and a mini horse named Dream. Handlers accompany the animals to schools and colleges to help students relieve stress; they bring smiles to the faces of nursing home residents, hospital patients and those in mental health centers. “Some of our handlers bring dogs to comfort children who must testify about family members in the juvenile court system,” says Carolyn. “The kids are stressed and it helps them to love and pet the dogs.”

Studies show that for most people, animal-assisted therapy, otherwise known as pet therapy, prompts the body to release serotonin, prolactin and oxytocin. These hormones generate a relaxation and stress-reducing response that can lower symptoms of depression and sadness, anxiety and fear. The organization needs more volunteers. “We try to cover as much ground as we can but we’re currently getting more requests than we can fill,” Carolyn explains. “We want to be able to say yes to everyone.” She became a handler after her Thompson’s Station neighbor told her about a Vietnam veteran living in a nearby nursing home. He and his wife had been in a car accident and his wife was killed. The veteran had CONTINUED >

a traumatic brain injury. He lost his home, his dogs, everything. He had a feeding tube and wouldn’t get out of bed. “People tried everything to help this man,” says Carolyn, “and I wanted to do something too.” She had a Shutzhund German Shepherd Dog named Bailey with a temperament sought-after for rescue and police work. “I started taking Bailey to the nursing home every week to visit this veteran and we noticed changes in his demeanor. After seven weeks, he was no longer using a feeding tube and was leaving his room. Once I saw how an animal’s presence can transform a life, I knew this was something I needed to seek out.” If you have or know of an animal who would make a great therapy pet, contact MCCP through its website at MusicCityPetPartners. org and learn how to volunteer. “As a handler, my mental and physical health is improved just as much as the people we’re visiting. It’s a great joy to see a dog brighten up a person’s face,” says Carolyn.

The winter can be a rough time on your skin. The combination of colder, drier weather and traveling can lead to many unwanted changes. Here are some basic tips to keep your skin in tip-top shape during the winter. Moisturize moisturize moisturize. Winter brings colder and drier weather, which can dry out the skin, leading to red and flaky areas. A good moisturizer routine daily can help combat this. Don’t forget the SPF! Just because we see less sun in the winter, doesn’t make it any less harmful to our skin. Modulate your retinoid use. Although retinoids are an important part of skin care regimens, they can be very drying during the winter. Stay hydrated! Make sure to drink plenty of water to keep your skin looking great.

Bringing the feelings, flavors and freshness of coastal Italy to historic Downtown Franklin was in the cards for executive chef and owner Frank Pullara. “Being Italian, I grew up eating seafood and always cherished creating those recipes with my family for holidays and gatherings. I’m thrilled to add a unique fish-centric restaurant to our culinary scene.” As the second concept from Pullara, who also heads neighboring hotspot Culaccino, Bestia Mare focuses on sustainably sourced seafood and modern selections from both land & ocean. The menu dives into authentic seaside Italian fare to capture the essence of being ‘al mare’ without leaving Tennessee. Translating to “sea beast” In Italian, Bestia Mare’s menu pays homage to the Mediterranean-style seafood cuisine found on the southern coast of Italy amongst the elegance of charming seaside towns. Bestia Mare currently offers lunch and dinner service, along with a late-night menu and will soon launch weekend brunch service. BestiaMareTN.com

THE ANTIQUES & GARDEN SHOW OF NASHVILLE 62

H OM E U P DAT E | ARTS + CU LT U RE

The Antiques & Garden Show was founded in 1990 by Nashville-born designer Albert Hadley. Architectural Digest called Hadley “one who taught America what style is all about,” and the show became

their personalities. What are some treasures that visitors can discover at the show? Caroline: The show offers the unique opportunity to shop from vendors from all over the world who special-

“WE CHOSE THE THEME ‘WELCOME TO BEAUTIFUL’ BECAUSE WE WANT TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO APPRECIATE THE BEAUTY IN EVERYDAY LIFE.” — SUSAN a southern tradition for collectors, gardeners and those who enjoy beautiful things. Cheekwood Estate & Gardens and ECON Charities have been the show’s beneficiaries since it was founded. Hadley established the event as a way to give back to the Nashville community, and nearly $10 million has been donated to these organizations. We sat down with co-chairs Caroline Cook and Susan Weathersby and asked what visitors to the show will find. Cook is an author and published her memoir, Hungry: Celebrating Life After Overcoming an Eating Disorder. Weathersby is the current chair of marketing and development for Friends of Warner Parks. In [Honorary Chair] Bunny Williams’ book, An Affair with a House, she talks about ‘The Hunt,’ where people poke around shops and estate sales to find unique items that reflect

ize in every aspect of the home, both inside and outside. Attendees have access to art, furniture, rugs, jewelry, accessories. There’s really no better collaboration in the country than what happens on the show floor. It’s also a cool opportunity to browse and just enjoy the hunt! The theme for this year’s show, ‘Welcome to Beautiful,’ is based on the Herend Queen Victoria china pattern depicting colorful butterflies with vibrant flowers. How does the butterfly relate to the messages being shared about home and garden transformations? Caroline: Butterflies are an incredible reflection of transformation, beauty, color, imagination and opportunity. The evolution of the butterfly also takes love and time, just like our homes and gardens. Susan: We chose the theme ‘Welcome to Beautiful’ because we want to encourage

people to appreciate the beauty in everyday life, from their homes to their communities. The butterfly is a great representation of that message — it’s a beautiful creature that everyone can enjoy and appreciate. Caroline and Susan, you both serve on the boards of multiple charities in our area. How did you become involved with the Antiques & Garden Show? Caroline: I’ve been attending the show for as long as I can remember, and most recently, my husband has been involved with building structures for the show’s garden showcases. I felt so privileged to be asked. It has always felt like a family affair, and I love and appreciate what it does for our city. Susan: I became involved in 2006 with the Junior League of Nashville. I volunteer because we live in an amazing community and I feel called to care for and give back to it. Did you ever get to meet Albert Hadley? Susan: No, but we wish we would’ve had the opportunity! Will vendors reflect a Southern sensibility or will there be a myriad of regional styles? Caroline: It’s a myriad of regional styles, but there’s always a fusion of Southern flair because we’re in Nashville. Our dealer chairs are intentional in their selection of vendors so that attendees experience a wide variety of styles, price points, interests and items to shop from, which means there’s something for everyone.

“IT’S A COOL OPPORTUNITY TO BROWSE AND JUST ENJOY THE HUNT!” Will there be exclusive shopping hours for design professionals? Susan: There’s an industry-only event on Thursday called the First Look. Non-design professionals can also get a sneak peek of the show floor during the Thursday evening Preview Party. Ina Garten’s latest cookbook, Cooking in Real Life: Delicious & Doable Recipes for Every Day, will be released this March. Will we get any sneak peeks? Caroline: We sure hope so! Ina doesn’t make a lot of appearances, so we’re humbled that she said yes to being our keynote speaker, and we’re looking forward to hearing what she has to say. You’ll have to come to the show to find out!

Franklin resident Kristen Fisher is more than a wife, mom of two, graphic designer, and muralist - she is also an IRONMAN triathlete. In 2013, after the birth of her second daughter and with encouragement from her sister, Kristen laced up her running shoes and embarked on a life-altering adventure. Initially deeming triathlon pursuits as outlandish, Kristen was daunted by the swim and road bike requirements (2.4-mile open water swim, 112-mile bike ride, 26.2-mile run) but discovered a supportive community in BEAT - Brentwood Endurance Athletic Team. Triumphantly completing her first full IRONMAN in 2015 fueled a dream—the pursuit of securing an invitation to compete in the prestigious IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. This summer, Kristen achieved that dream, navigating challenges including solitary stretches through lava fields. Amidst the race's intensity, she felt a powerful sense of camaraderie, noting, “Out there with the other athletes, you could feel a bond and sisterhood. Women were cheering each other on with high fives, hugs, and encouragement.” In town, crowds of strangers were also screaming words of encouragement to the athletes from over 75 countries. Kristen says, “This is humanity at its best. I felt like an Olympic athlete earning a gold medal.” Beyond personal accomplishments, Kristen was thrilled her daughters were engaging with families worldwide and her husband was there providing unwavering support. After conquering seven full and six half IRONMAN events in three years, Kristen envisions new challenges—possibly ultramarathons, qualifying for the Boston Marathon, or additional IRONMAN events. "You never know what you are capable of unless you try," says Kristen.

EMPOWERING CHANGE, the eco-friendly way

WITH THE GOOD FILL’S ECO-CONSCIOUS ENTREPRENEUR, MEGAN GILL ARTICLE BY KAREN CREASON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Caught up in the whirlwind of modern living, Megan Gill, the visionary founder of The Good Fill, found herself at a crossroads after a stint living off the grid in Costa Rica. Having spent 13 years as a hairdresser, Megan felt a growing need to pivot her career, a desire that gained momentum during her time in Central America. Living on a palm plantation opened her eyes to a whole new world and triggered a profound realization about the environmental impact of our daily choices, inspiring her to find a solution that supports sustainability and waste reduction. Witnessing the palm and banana farm workers prepare products for export, yet still struggle to provide food for their families despite their hard work and long hours, heightened Megan's awareness of the profound impact our purchasing habits have on individuals and communities globally. This became the catalyst for her determination to make a difference. "We live in a throwaway culture," she says. Shocked by the staggering amount of plastic waste, Megan founded The Good Fill with a mission to help throw away wasteful thinking by providing alternatives to the disposable items we use every day. Encouraging conscious consumption, The Good Fill prompts customers to rethink choices in a culture dominated by disposability. Megan sheds light on the environmental impact of packaged products, like liquid laundry detergent, often consisting of 70-80 percent water. The Good Fill offers concentrates, powders, and a user-friendly process, including the option to purchase pre-filled bottles, refilling customer’s personal bottles, or using recyclable pouches.

“... live in a way that is more thoughtful, healthy, and responsible.” Products are sold by the ounce and weighed before filling. In a short time, The Good Fill has become a haven for eco-friendly sustainable products, saving an impressive 176,000 plastic containers from landfills. Despite the initial challenges of balancing motherhood, hairstyling, and entrepreneurship, The Good Fill online store flourished, gaining momentum through word of mouth, culminating in the opening of its first physical location in East Nashville in 2019. The pandemic marked a turning point, propelling The Good Fill to a larger space in 2020 and opening a second location in The Nations in West Nashville in 2021. "I thought this was a dream that would never come true. I was shocked when it took off," Megan says. Offering a treasure trove of eco-friendly sustainable products from cleaning sprays, hand and dish soap, laundry detergent, room sprays, glass cleaner, and bath salts, to shampoos and conditioners and more, each of the products at The Good Fill is meticulously crafted with sustainable, clean ingredients. Megan's studies in cosmetic formulation and ingredient analysis ensures that each product is not only environmentally friendly but also effective. The emphasis on zero waste also extends to packaging, which can be reconditioned, recycled, or reused. Megan ensures sustainability in the manufacturing

process as well. Additionally, she collaborates exclusively with partners who adhere to certified fair wage and fair labor practices. Established partnerships with like-minded brands offering refill services is one way The Good Fill is helping to reduce waste in the broader consumer goods industry. Many of the products are produced locally or made in-house. As The Good Fill continues to evolve, Megan's vision includes expanding in-house production to reduce her environmental footprint further. Emphasizing the belief that each person can make a meaningful impact through thoughtful consumption, Megan and her team are dedicated to educating customers on composting, recycling, and eco-friendly alternatives. “The Good Fill is not just a shop to help you go zero waste but also an invitation to live in a way that is more thoughtful, healthy, and responsible,” adds Megan. It is the power of small steps and conscious choices needed to create a sustainable future. By offering alternatives to mainstream purchases, The Good Fill serves as an inspiration for others to reconsider their consumption habits, reminding us that even seemingly small actions can contribute to a more environmentally conscious, sustainable, and socially responsible world. Dr. Ethan Kellum

Focusing On Full-Body Health And Wellness ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

76

EDU CAT ION C OR N E R | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS

As a renowned orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Ethan Kellum has the ability to help his patients regain function and live better lives. However, surgery isn’t the answer for everyone for a variety of reasons, and he wanted to offer alternatives to help those patients as well. Although he still performs surgery, his main focus now is on regenerative medicine (bone marrow concentrate and adipose (fat) tissue containing stem cells, and platelet rich plasma) and keeping his patients living active, functional lives. “When I was in fellowship, I was the assistant team physician for the Boston Celtics,” says Dr. Kellum, a Tennessee native. “Because of that, I learned about PRP, or platelet rich plasma, as a non-surgical option because the players wanted it.” Later when he founded his own practice in Franklin in 2016, Nashville Regenerative Orthopedics, he had a patient who was a marathon runner and could no longer run. The patient had done everything to get better, including physical therapy and being placed in a walking boot, but nothing helped. Dr. Kellum offered him PRP, and he was back to running marathons a short time later. “It's my calling to help people get better, to get back their function,” he says. “I love what I do and it's extremely rewarding.” In 2023, to reflect its comprehensive treatments, the name of the practice changed to Kellum Stem Cell Institute. Here, Dr. Kellum shares what it offers and why, and how he and his team can help others through the magic of stem cell therapy, not only with orthopedic issues, but all kinds of chronic diseases.

and sometimes we even grow them to higher numbers. We then give them back intravenously, putting them in a joint or a tendon, or whatever area that’s struggling, and we let the stem cells do their thing and work their magic. Stem cells have the ability to hone into where there’s a problem to decrease inflammation, and when the inflammation is decreased, there’s less pain and, therefore, better function.

Q: HOW DOES STEM CELL THERAPY HELP PATIENTS LIVE BETTER, MORE FUNCTIONAL LIVES?

Q: KELLUM STEM CELL INSTITUTE BELIEVES IN BUILDING FULL-BODY HEALTH AND ONE WAY IT DOES THIS IS BY USING IV INFUSIONS TO BRING ESSENTIAL VITAMINS, MINERALS, AND ELECTROLYTES STRAIGHT INTO PATIENTS’ VEINS. THESE PROCEDURES BRING RELIEF FROM STRESS, FATIGUE, AND VARIOUS HEALTH CONCERNS. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO ADD THIS TREATMENT OPTION?

Every disease, whether it's musculoskeletal, multiple sclerosis, autism or any of those issues, has a basis of inflammation. Inflammation comes about because of the environment that we're in, the food we eat, not getting enough sleep, stress - all of these things play into inflammation. If you can make the inflammation better, you can decrease the symptoms of those issues. This is what stem cells are made to do – decrease inflammation. Our body naturally has stem cells, but they can lie dormant and need a little help to get where they're supposed to go.

Q: HOW DO YOU HELP THESE STEM CELLS?

We do a small in-office procedure to take stem cells from patients, and then we concentrate those cells

Q:. IS THE PROCEDURE SAFE?

Yes. The great thing is that it's material from your own body, so there's very little chance of rejection. The safety profiles have been studied a lot over the years and we know it's super safe. It's not going to hurt you.

Q: WHY IS USING STEM CELLS SOMETIMES A GREAT ALTERNATIVE TO SURGICAL INTERVENTION?

As an orthopedic surgeon, I’m obviously not opposed to surgery. It’s a great tool at times, and stem cells can't be used for everything, But there are a lot of times that they can be and sometimes there's not even a surgery for the problem a patient is having. With stem cell therapy, there’s also much less downtime.

Q: ONCE SOMEONE IS INJECTED WITH STEM CELLS, ABOUT HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR THEM TO START FEELING BETTER?

It can happen as early as two weeks, but I always tell people to give it three months.

We're pretty nutritionally deficient, and the great thing about IV therapy is that it's going to be 100 percent bioavailable versus what you take orally. I would say that probably the majority of us has, or will have, what I call gut issues, where we don't absorb things. So taking vitamins orally is not going to be very efficient. I'm not saying there's not a place for it, especially if you were treated with IV vitamins for a while. You can get a good dose in there and then maintain things orally. Once again, we're trying CONTINUED >

to lessen inflammation, and we can do this with these infusions. Quite honestly, most of our chronic diseases arise not because we have a true disease, but because we’re nutritionally deficient and therefore our body just can't work properly.

Q: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A PATIENT COMES IN FOR IV INFUSIONS?

First, we assess the patient to understand what's going on with them and we also do bloodwork to determine deficiencies. The infusions are tailored to each patient and to what they need. For example, their vitamin D may be great, but their magnesium is low and that's a problem.

Q: HOW OFTEN SHOULD PEOPLE COME IN FOR IV THERAPY?

Ideally, someone would get 12 treatments in a year, so once a month, but to start, I would say once a week for three months. It’s a safe procedure and we’ve been giving these supplements for a long time.

Q: WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU TO OFFER THESE SERVICES TO YOUR PATIENTS?

Because we want our patients to do well, we're interested in getting to the root cause and find out the things that are actually causing their problems. If we just give them a bunch of pills to alleviate the symptoms, we haven't gotten to the root cause of it. For example, if someone has scurvy, we can fix their bones and make them straight again, but we

haven't done anything for the real underlying problem. We need to give them vitamin C.

Q: WHY SHOULD PEOPLE TRUST KELLUM STEM CELL INSTITUTE, AND YOU AND DR. HEMAL MEHTA, TO PROVIDE THE BEST CARE FOR THEIR INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES?

What we do helps; it works. The biggest thing is that you're going to get someone who cares about you as a person and wants to help you get better.

Q: PEOPLE COME TO KELLUM FROM ALL OVER THE U. S., CANADA, AND EUROPE FOR TREATMENTS. HOW DOES YOUR STAFF ASSIST THESE PATIENTS WHO ARE FAR FROM HOME?

They definitely help people have what they need while they're here and make them comfortable. They can handle transportation and lodging, and anything else they require.

Q: MANY PRO ATHLETES ALSO VISIT KELLUM STEM CELL INSTITUTE FOR TREATMENTS. IN ADDITION TO THE CELTICS, WHAT OTHER TEAMS HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH IN YOUR CAREER?

Basically all of the major sports, from the UFC and NFL to the MLB and NHL. I'm also one of the team doctors for the Titans. I take care of a lot of players from many places and everything is kept highly confidential.

The holidays unfolded with my early abandonment of restraint for every dessert and seasonal snack in sight. No peppermint mocha or sugar cookie was safe around me. PR IOR ITI ZI NG VA SCU L A R H E A LTH Middle TN Vascular Associates Helps To Treat Vascular Concerns For All Ages ARTICLE BY LAUREN KELLY | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Varicose veins and spider veins are a very common, albeit unwelcome part of aging. It is estimated that by age sixty, 40 percent of men and 70 percent of women will develop these unsightly, and often uncomfortable veins. As explained by Dr. Derek De Grijs, these veins, most commonly affecting the legs, become more prominent over time as increased pressure from prolonged standing or sitting can cause the delicate valves within the leg veins to function less effectively. This leads to leg swelling, heaviness, fatigue, and the unwanted appearance of varicose or spider veins. Additionally, Dr. De Grijs says women are affected more commonly than men due to a combination of genetic predisposition, prolonged exposure to estrogen, and changes

84

EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

to the body during pregnancy. Because of this, these unwanted veins are often considered an inconvenience of aging women. However, they do frequently occur in men, and in severe cases, in both men and women beginning in the late teens and early twenties. Overall, addressing these vein problems tends to get put off because it is not seen as an immediate medical concern. Patients see their parents and grandparents struggling with progressively worsening painful and unsightly veins, but often aren’t aware that quick and effective treatments are readily available and, in most cases, covered by insurance. While it is true that varicose and spider veins do not usually indicate a severe medical problem, Dr. De Grijs says,

"The longer patients wait to seek treatment, the worse the varicose or spider veins tend to get. The sooner that we can initiate treatment, the better the long-term results will be.” The experts at Middle Tennessee Vascular Associates seek to aid patients of all ages by resolving painful or unsightly varicose or spider veins in their specialized vein clinic located in Williamson Medical Center. The practice, which is led by three board certified vascular surgeons, also has three vascular health centers located in Franklin, Columbia and Shelbyville. At these locations, patients are treated for a variety of vascular conditions in addition to vein problems (among them, aneurysms, arterial blockages and dialysis access). Middle Tennessee Vascular Associates has two physician assistants and three vascular surgeons, including Dr. Derek De Grijs, M.D., RPVI, a Nashville native with more than 10 years of vascular health experience. “There are two major wings to the practice. The first is a general vascular surgery practice where we treat a wide array of diseases that affect or involve the vascular system, which often require major surgery. The second is Middle Tennessee Vein Clinic where we treat the majority of vein-related problems which includes varicose veins and spider veins," says Dr. De Grijs. Middle Tennessee Vascular sees a wide range of patients, but varicose veins are more common among specific groups. “There is a much higher frequency of varicose veins and spider veins in women due to genetics and prolonged exposure to estrogen,” De Grijs explains. “Our vascular surgery practice sees an older population. However, at our vein clinic we see significantly younger patients, with it not being uncommon to see women in their mid-twenties or early thirties, who have already been suffering from varicose veins for many years!”

The clinic offers solutions for each case, no matter how big or small. The simplest form of treatment is to begin wearing well-fitting compression stockings (20-30mm Hg) while standing or sitting. “One of the most common procedures is sclerotherapy, which is a tried-and-true treatment for resolution of spider veins,” states De Grijs. “In brief, it is an injection with an extremely small needle, directed into the webs of spider veins, which immediately improves the appearance of these veins in very little time (15-20 minutes).” If these varicose veins or spider veins are severe, or continuously recur, generally there are a couple larger veins feeding them that are having venous reflux- when the blood is flowing the wrong direction due to failure of the delicate valves within the veins. When this is the case, in addition to compression stockings, often a procedure called a radio frequency ablation is done to close the malfunctioning vein down. This redirects blood flow into the healthier veins. “At Middle Tennessee Vascular Associates, we also have our very own vascular lab where we do a multitude of imaging studies, including ultrasounds of blood vessels throughout the body- which is a separate entity that we have offered to the community for many years," De Grijs says. He adds, “Most of our employees have been with the practice for many years. A lot of our patients continue coming to our practice for ongoing surveillance of things that we had performed interventions on in the past, and they continue to entrust us to ensure that everything remains in good working order. This is not only a testament to the skill and acumen of the practitioners but also to a staff that makes our patients feel comfortable and confident." MidTNVascular.com CONTINUED >

As a high school student in her hometown of Norman, Oklahoma, Alexis Diggs was quite an athlete. She was a presence on the diamond, the court and the track. And while being a year-round competitor was an awful lot of fun, it also came with a price. In particular, wear and tear on her body that, in some cases, required surgery. “I’ve had sports injuries and I’ve been to physical therapy and orthopedists for rehab,” she says. “But after all of that I was still having pain and I was like, ‘What the heck is going on?’” It turned out that some of the surgeries were causing her to overcompensate by placing undue pressure on her hips and joints. So she visited a chiropractor and was able to find the relief she needed. “There’s absolutely a time and a place for pills and needles but those are not my first choices,” she says. “I thought it was better to seek treatment that was natural to the body and not just something to treat symptoms.” The experience inspired her to enroll at Parker University in Dallas, one of the nation’s top chiropractic schools, where she earned a Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 2022. From there she moved to Franklin, along with Breck, her rescued black lab, to embark on her healthcare career. She worked for a while at a larger practice where she learned the ropes of the business, then left to open her own practice, Rooted And Renewed Chiropractic, in July of 2023. influencing her decision to open her own business at such a young age. “I grew up in a military family and there was a mentality of doing something sooner rather than later,” she says. “Personally, I’m not a big fan of people telling me what to do but I respect the military mindset and the value that comes from it.” As a chiropractor, Dr. Diggs says she’s able to treat patients in a way that’s best for them, not according to a script. “I love helping people and sometimes that can be subluxations, known more commonly as adjustments or manipulations,” she says. “Sometimes it’s being a quiet pair of ears for when someone needs to ramble a bit. Providing that comfort level is what I want to do.” CONTINUED >

Dr. Diggs with her rescue dog Breck

Dr. Diggs tries to set an example by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. She stays active outdoors and has been a vegetarian for nearly three years. “I took nutrition classes in chiro school but there was no defining moment that caused me to change my diet,” she says. “I just felt as though my body wasn’t absorbing what it needed. So I started by eliminating meat and it made me feel healthier. I enjoy the fresh aspect, so I try to shop at farmers markets. Also if I’m going to tell my patients how important it is, it’s important for me to have a healthy lifestyle as well.” She also experiments at home with fresh and inspiring recipes. One of her favorites is a gnocchi pasta with homemade vodka sauce. It features a potato-based pasta, tomato paste simmered with a couple of teaspoons of vodka and seasonings like paprika, oregano, cumin, salt and pepper. But the secret ingredient for the kick, is a couple of bursts of pepper spray. Yes, THAT kind of pepper spray. “That’s something that my dad used to add when he was making chili,” she says. From her office at 1227 Lakeview Drive, Dr. Diggs sees patients from less than a year old to more than 90 years old. Common treatable conditions include everything from headaches and sciatic pain to injuries stemming from rolled ankles or repetitive stress from working on computers all day. “I don’t think people realize how much of our ability to live comfortably comes from the spine, but literally everything in the body – nerves, muscles, even digestive and sleeping issues – are connected to it,” she says.

The deep-rooted connection serves as the inspiration for her practice’s name and logo. “We can put Band-Aids on things, but I want to get to the root cause,” says Dr. Diggs. “Your pain might be here, but is it coming from there? Is it related to something that happened years ago? When I hear people say, ‘It’s just normal pain,’ my response is, ‘Pain isn’t normal.’” The logo features a leafy stem that mimics the spine. “It’s original art by my old roommate and one of my best friends,” says Dr. Diggs. “She’s in digital marketing and has the creative mindset that I don’t.” For now, Dr. Diggs is enjoying the ongoing dual process of growing her business and helping her patients. “What I like about chiropractic is the ability we have to give people immediate relief,” she says. “Whether it’s from a chronic or lingering injury, or someone who hit their elbow on a table, almost anyone can benefit from chiropractic treatment. There’s nothing more gratifying than seeing patients get off the table with a smile on their face.” Dr. Alexis Diggs knows from personal experience. RootedRenewedChiropractic.com

Known to her community as a licensed marriage and family therapist, inspirational speaker, author and transformational coach, Dr. Stacy Jagger's brand of therapy and family coaching have helped thousands of people looking to reconnect with their children and families. The key, she says, is to disconnect from screens in order to connect with one another. Dr. Jagger’s life today is far removed from her troubled upbringing in Bellevue’s River Plantation, which was heavily influenced by an adoring but alcoholic father. Her childhood was filled with violence, financial instability, multiple evictions, physical abuse and hours upon hours of sitting in front of a television as an electronic babysitter. Seeking an escape, she found refuge with a generous Nashville family, whom she lived with during her senior year at Hillwood High School. In the early years of her life, true connection was rare, so she often turned to music and dance for a mental escape. Dr. Jagger began her education at UT Knoxville before she fell into a deep, clinical depression and began her road to healing at The Meier Clinic, an inpatient mental hospital in Atlanta. After dealing with the trauma of her childhood, she moved back to Nashville and continued

her education in music at Belmont University and began teaching music and dance to children and teens. Going back to graduate school at Trevecca Nazarene University, she explored the clinical side of marriage and family therapy, desiring to help others heal in a way she never experienced as a child. Dr. Jagger’s personal quest for healing began at a serendipitous encounter during her early twenties. Traveling to Farmington, Tennessee, she and her husband stumbled upon a frontier cabin built in the 1850s that appeared frozen in time. The cabin had no electricity or running water. Despite, or maybe because of, those modern inconveniences, she knew it was exactly what her soul had been craving all her life: peace and stillness. What started as a request for them to live there briefly, turned into an 18-month sabbatical from the hurried digital world. Living without modern distractions, she embraced simplicity and the harmony of a slow-paced life. It was during this time that she realized that the key to healing and reconnection was creativity that was encouraged by nature and simplicity. After she earned her master’s degree in marriage and family therapy, she launched a private counseling practice in Columbia, Tennessee, where she CONTINUED >

and her husband were living in an 1878 farmhouse, and raising their homeschooled children. Stacy’s work counseling families through trauma and children’s behavioral issues led her to realize that the overuse of screens was creating deep disconnection and behavioral problems. This work inspired her to write her book, 30-Day Blackout: How To Help Your Kids Turn Off The Screen And Turn To Their Family. Her experience in helping hundreds of families heal led her to create the “Mountain Method.” The “Mountain Method” is a whole-family approach that helps families climb the mountain of communication, reconnection, forgiveness, and conflict resolution. The mountain-climbing metaphor came from her experiences overcoming years of trauma to get to the other side. This therapy treatment prescribes a 3 to 6-month timeline, where Stacy and her team at Music City Family Therapy, guide a family along the trail, as they move from brokenness to restoration. It starts with a digital detox — a 30-day “fast” from screens and electronics (excluding work and school). Dr. Jagger suggests connection-based activities that expose the family's troubled dynamics. During those few months, she frequently sees significant decreases in ADHD symptoms and behavioral issues. Dr. Jagger's research highlights the adverse effects of excessive screen time, whether smartphones, tablets, computers, or television, on children's mental health, executive functioning, and overall well-being. Notably, her work aligns with recent warnings from Dr. Vivek Murthy, United States Surgeon General, that “there are ample indicators that social media can also have a profound

94

risk of harm to the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents.” [Source: hhs.gov/sites/default/files/ sg-youth-mental-health-social-media-advisory.pdf] These affects include sleep deprivation, depression, and anxiety. The treatment methods that Dr. Jagger uses today are the result of years of counseling and family intensives, where she recognized an underlying pattern. Themes of disconnection and behavioral issues in children emerged as a haunting refrain, echoing the consequences of unregulated screen time, a lack of family communication skills, and a deficit of play—especially in the realms of creativity and nature. Driven by a deep-rooted commitment to making a difference in the lives of children, Dr. Jagger founded "Advocate for the Creative Child," a non-profit scholarship fund for children affected by trauma. The non-profit was launched in the aftermath of the recent Nashville school shooting, a somber reminder of the challenges faced by children in today’s society. Her hope is that generous donors will catch her vision and contribute to helping the underprivileged and traumatized children of Nashville, whose childhoods are not that different from Stacy’s. Stacy now lives in Thompson’s Station and has a husband and four wonderful children who are active in dance, music theater, and sports. parenthood A Glimpse Into Mama Moon’s European Birthing Methods And Postpartum Care ARTICLE BY CAROL FITE LYNN PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALURAWAYNE PHOTOGRAPHY

As a six-year-old, playing on the quiet south Brittany coasts of Pornichet, France, Amandine Bossy was captivated by the mothers and babies she observed. “I’ve always been passionate about babies and moms. I was fascinated by pregnancy and thought pregnant women were the most beautiful. There was something so magical about them.” At the core of Bossy’s ethos lies a profound reverence for the sanctity of childbirth. Bringing the wisdom of European birthing techniques to Tennessee, she provides a holistic approach that empowers mothers-to-be by providing services to support the parenthood journey from conception through postpartum care. The charmingly petite mother of Jules (9), Leon (7) and Nina (20 months) and owner of Mama Moon Birth Concierge, confidently shoulders the duties of caring for her family as well as the many others who trust her to help them navigate the chaotic moments of new parenthood with a subtle and dignified strength. “I loved having Amandine by my side during the birth of our sweet Scout,” said Rose Falcon Atkins of Rod + Rose. “She was a calming yet encouraging and empowering force.” From doula services to childbirth education and newborn therapeutic baths, Bossy’s focus is on personalized care, ensuring that the birthing experience aligns with the preferences and needs of each family.

“Giving birth is such an intimate, vulnerable experience. It’s difficult to find someone you feel comfortable with and trust to be in that sacred space,” said Falcon Adkins. “With Amandine’s help, I was able to have the unmedicated birth I hoped for, and truly, one of the best days of my life.” Bossy’s unconventional journey to becoming a doula began with a stint in medical school in France. “I was in school to become a midwife and it all seemed so sterile and detached. I took a break to travel and came to the United States as an au pair for a Brentwood family. The people here were so nice and polite, and the countryside was so beautiful. It just felt like home, so I decided to stay and build a life here.” Bossy soon met her husband, Bart, through a meetup group of French expats living in Brentwood, where they’ve maintained longtime friendships and continue bringing French traditions and culture to their new community. Bossy finished her degree in psychology at Lipscomb University. But the pull to help mothers and babies remained, and as she and her husband started their family, fears for her own birthing experience motivated her to seek less traditional delivery options. “I didn’t know anything about childbirth in America, and reading about the number of cesarean sections performed here was terrifying. I needed to find an option that allowed me to take some of the power back in my birthing journey.” After settling on a natural home birth, her midwife and birthing team educated her about the role of doulas, who are not commonly part of the French birthing experience. “It became clear that being a doula was my path as the perfect bridge between midwifery and psychology, allowing me to get to know the mom, supporting her through her fears, and holding her hand through the most challenging moments of childbirth.”

100 LOCA L’S CH OICE | HEALT H + WE LLN E SS

After the birth of her first child, Bossy formally trained as a doula and committed to bringing modern, research-based care and the latest European practices to new mothers and babies in Franklin and beyond. From the start of her doula business nearly 10 years ago, Mama Moon has grown her services beyond just birthing, offering comprehensive postpartum support including newborn night nursing; a boon for new parents adjusting to the challenges of sleepless nights. Neonatal and pediatric registered nurses help during these tumultuous early childhood stages, offering not just care for newborns but also guidance for parents on feeding, soothing techniques and establishing healthy routines. “Amandine saved my life and sleep as a first-time mother,” said Kimberly Perry, formerly of The Band Perry. “When I brought my baby boy home, I naively thought I’d be able to rock him to sleep and he’d dream peacefully all night. Obviously, this was not my experience, and I ended up contacting Mama Moon at 3 a.m. to book a night nurse for the rest of the week. I ultimately scheduled night nursing for the remainder of his newborn weeks, and it completely changed the trajectory of my experience as a new mom. They taught me to breastfeed, answered my questions and provided peace of mind as they took care of my baby while I slept.” While the birthing process can often seem clinical and detached, Bossy is working to change the childbirth narrative by prioritizing emotional, physical and spiritual well-being of both mother and baby. From prenatal classes that delve into various birthing methods to postpartum workshops focusing on nurturing the baby and the mother, Mama Moon fosters a community of informed and empowered parents. “Helping new mamas is my purpose,” says Bossy. “Birth and postpartum are such difficult times. I love to educate, help them prepare, relax them with guided meditations, and then help them sleep and recover postpartum. The feeling that I helped in some way is truly my joy.” Mama Moon serves not just as a birthing partner but also fosters a community where the miracle of childbirth and parenthood is celebrated, cherished, and honored in all its magical and messy moments. A Look Into The Future Of Podiatry With Dr. Lance Reeves

ARTICLE BY CORTNEY WILBANKS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

104 O UR TOWN | W EL L NES S

“The patient will have a better outcome if you get straight to the source.”

Nestled in the heart of Franklin, Cool Springs Foot Care was opened by Dr. Lance Reeves in response to the gaps he found in traditional podiatry care. Born in the sun-soaked town of Visalia, California, Lance took an interest in medicine at a young age when he witnessed his brother undergo flat foot reconstructive surgery.“I was just really impressed by how the physician interacted with my family,” said Reeves. This encounter with compassionate care ignited Lance’s dream to create a healthcare environment where patients are not just another case, but a cherished member of a medical family. During his surgical residency in Lima, Ohio, he took notice of the different ways physicians practiced podiatry, which led him to realize that the care that he witnessed his brother receive was a rarity in the current medical environment. The decision to move to Franklin wasn’t just a location change; it was a deliberate choice to be closer to family. As life unfolded, Dr. Reeves, along with his expectant wife (third child), found themselves weaving the threads of destiny that led them to this warm and welcoming community. Dr. Reeves stumbled upon a volume-based practice and saw an opportunity to redefine the doctor-patient relationship. Inspired by colleagues with hybrid concierge practices, he dreamt of a space where personalized attention was not a luxury but the standard. The realization struck him, so he opened a practice that prioritizes 1:1 patient experiences that

yield not only better outcomes, but greater patient satisfaction. Dr. Reeves discovered pathologies that proved challenging within the confines of insurance-based models. Undeterred, he carved new pathways, ensuring better patient outcomes by sidestepping the traditional pressures of insurance-based practices. “Most of the time, the patient will have a better outcome if you get straight to the source vs. make them jump through a lot of insurance hoops,” Dr. Reeves says. With a commitment to excellence, Dr. Reeves delves deeply into the realm of minimally invasive surgery. These procedures can be done the same day in the office, allowing the patient to walk out with a renewed sense of well-being. This is the promise of Dr. Reeves’ practice – a fusion of advanced techniques and compassionate care. But the innovation doesn’t stop there. Dr. Reeves employs state-of-the-art therapies such as laser therapy for pain and inflammation, shock wave therapy for chronic heel pain like plantar fasciitis, and Swift Wart Therapy – a revolutionary approach using microwaves to treat warts, providing a gentle alternative to freezing and cutting. Providing patients with individualized care has given Dr. Reeves joy knowing that his original goal with medicine has been accomplished and will be carried out throughout the community of Franklin during his tenure. He invites you to experience podiatry where every step is taken with precision, compassion, and a commitment to the patient journey. CoolSpringsFootcare.com

WHEN YOU WERE 10, WHAT DID YOU ENVISION AS YOUR CAREER?

AW: I thought I would be a chef. I remember trying to recreate "twinkies" in my kitchen. MD: A teacher. KC: I envisioned my adult self as a professional soccer-playing mom and author. ES: Growing up, I always wanted to be a teacher, and while I don’t work in the classroom now, I homeschool my children.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

AW: When I turned 12, I was a babysitter. I was very sought after and was going on vacation with multiple families by the time I was 16. Babysitting enabled me to buy my first car with cash! MD: My first job was as a 14-year-old. I was a cashier in a small business party supply store owned by a lovely couple. KC: When I was 10 years old, I had my first paid job delivering The Home News newspaper to customers in my neighborhood. ES: I worked at a kiosk in the mall where you could make a video (a VHS tape!) of your kids riding a sleigh through a pretend snow scene. We would throw fake snowballs at them, make them laugh, and take still pictures, and you could get photos printed on mugs and keychains, etc. It was super cute and fun!

WHAT WOULD YOU EAT IF YOU HAD TO EAT ONE MEAL (REGARDLESS OF HEALTH CONSEQUENCES) FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE?

AW: Easy - anything with nuts. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, almond butter on apples, etc. I never met a nut I didn't like. MD: My Mom’s meatballs. The best ever. KC: I would eat peanut butter and pepperoni sandwiches with a glass of cold milk. Don’t knock it until you try it! ES: Do sub sandwiches count? I would switch up the meat, cheese, and toppings for variety. I never tire of delicious sandwiches.

DO YOU LIKE OR DISLIKE SURPRISES?

AW: Dislike, I like to be in control of my circumstances but I'm working on it. MD: Dislike. I like the IDEA of them, but not the actual surprise. KC: I dislike surprises mainly because I like to plan things. I would much rather look forward to something than be surprised by something. ES: In general, they’re not my favorite but it really depends. Show up with my favorite coffee or dessert? Sure. Find out my kid flushed their underwear down the toilet? Absolutely not.

ASIDE FROM NECESSITIES, WHAT IS ONE THING YOU COULD NOT GO A DAY WITHOUT?

AW: I really need my alone time. Lying in my bed with the covers up over my head watching anything relaxing on Netflix. MD: Lip balm. I'm addicted. Hate the feeling of chapped lips. KC: Laughter, even if it is at myself. ES: Well, I consider coffee a necessity, so I’d have to say books.

WHAT ARE YOUR TWO BIGGEST PET PEEVES?

AW: The sound of loud chewing and breathing (misophonia) really drives me crazy. MD: I cannot stand lying and fake people who use others to get ahead. KC: I have no tolerance for dishonesty and drama. ES: When people tailgate me or when they interrupt me when I’m talking. Both boil down to a lack of respect, I suppose.

WHAT WAS THE LAST BOOK YOU READ? AW: The Infinite Game MD: West with Giraffes KC: Axiomatic ES: Dracula, for my Well-Read Mom book club.

DO YOU LOVE OR HATE ROLLER COASTERS?

AW: I hate the feeling of not being in control of my body so rollercoasters are a no for me. MD: Loved them as a kid. Not so much as an adult. KC: I used to love rollercoasters but now I get motion sickness from riding them. ES: Love! My favorite is Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. It was so fun watching my kids enjoy Slinky Dog Dash and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train also!

DO YOU COLLECT ANYTHING OR HAVE YOU IN THE PAST?

AW: I collect Christmas ornaments from vacation spots we have visited. It's fun to see them all go up. We have amassed quite the collection to remind us of our travels throughout the world! MD: I collect magnets from places I have traveled that adorn our garage refrigerator. KC: Nope! I cannot stand clutter or useless things that require dusting. ES: I used to collect a cookbook from the various places I traveled. Now I collect cross-stitch projects.

WHAT'S ONE THING ON YOUR BUCKET LIST YOU'RE DETERMINED TO ACHIEVE?

AW: I want to visit Bar Harbor, Maine, and plan to cross this off my bucket list this year. CONTINUED >

MD: I want to take my son to the Galapagos Islands. KC: I am determined to travel to all 50 states. ES: I’d love to take my family on a Disney Cruise one day.

WHAT IS A SKILL YOU WANT TO LEARN?

AW: I want to obtain fluency in Spanish. I bought lessons for my husband and I for the holidays. MD: I used to speak Italian and would love to relearn and become fluent again. KC: I want to learn how to take better photographs. ES: Probably slackline. I am in awe of the balance and coordination it takes.

DO YOU HAVE ANY NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS OR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE? AW: Believe it or not, I want to be able to do a pull-up. Just one pull-up. MD: I want to retire sooner rather than later. KC: I want to be more intentional with my time and make more trips home to visit my mother. ES: I want to close my Apple Watch rings every day. I just got a walking pad and a standing desk so I’m on my way!

WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE?

AW: See aforementioned answer about my favorite food. I love any kind of nuts. MD: Jolly Rancher gummies. KC: Genealogy research… and Devil Dogs (Drakes devil food cakes with vanilla cream filling) ES: Scrolling Instagram reels, some of them are so funny and creative.

"Who am I beyond a supporting character?"

114 M UST SE E | HEALTH + W ELLN E SS

When Caitlin Estell moved from Los Angeles to Nashville during the pandemic to be with her then-boyfriend, now-husband, radio and television personality Bobby Bones, she says she didn’t expect the major life shift that occurred. “I went from having a normal life, with only my friends following me on socials, to moving to a city where my husband is very public. I don’t think you really know if you like something until you experience it,” she says, speaking of the sudden exposure to his fanbase. “I wasn’t used to feedback about myself from anyone who didn’t know me, and I hadn’t yet built up the muscles to turn a blind eye to those opinions." Caitlin says she and her husband are very opposite in that way. "He’s very much public and would prefer to post what he’s having for breakfast every day on the internet,” she says. “We’re different, not worse, not better. The pandemic, mixed with lifestyle adjustments, caused me to have some anxiety, even more so than I was having in regular life.” After moving from a city and friends she loved to a town where she knew no one but Bobby, Caitlin says she wondered what kind of life she’d have here, especially when the world was shut down. “Then I had to figure out how to have a life when the world wasn’t shut down.” Now, she loves Nashville and has a very supportive friend group, but finding the answer took two years and a lot of self-discovery. “I realized I needed to figure out what I actually think about myself, so I’m not cosigning things, whether positive or negative, and letting that shape who I am as a human. I got caught in that for a bit, mostly the negativity, but even the positive things. People might comment that you always have cute shoes, and you think, ‘Oh no, people think I always have cute shoes! Now I always have to have cute shoes! All the time!’”

Caitlin discovered that looking for her identity in what other people either liked about her or didn’t was something she was no longer willing to do. Having been in therapy after a traumatic experience as a child, Caitlin says she knew help from a professional would allow her to take positive steps to adjust to her new life and manage her anxiety. “When things got hard, I knew I needed to talk some of this out. I thought, ‘I can’t take this home to Bobby every night.’ He’d lived this life for so long. A lot of the things that would really rock me were so normal to him that he couldn’t fully comprehend why I’d put so much stock in other people’s opinions. But I’ve never had strangers say things about me before. This world is wild, and I needed help. “I think another reason I needed therapy was about losing my identity. Most of the time, my husband’s job makes him the main character, and I needed to figure out, ‘Who am I beyond a supporting character?’ I was always introduced as Bobby’s something, his girlfriend or fiancée or wife.” Caitlin felt a deep desire to figure out who she wanted to be and how to “make this life familiar, to find something that I enjoy and how not to lose myself in the shadow of another person, even though that shadow is beautiful.” “I’m at a place where I like myself. I’m at peace with who I am right now," she says. "I’m not sharing my experience over the last few years to get love. At the end of the day, regardless of what anyone thinks of my mental health/self-love journey, I will still love myself.” As for those walking through life with her, Caitlin says, “I have such a great support system. I had a conversation with a friend about mental health the other day. He’s on his own journey, and we can really get in the weeds about the subject, and he was proud I was doing this interview.

"I’m not sharing my experience over the last few years to get love."

It might seem trivial, but it’s such a step for me. I used to hide from everyone. It’s not that I care what strangers say to each other about me; it’s the thought of someone I love seeing what they’re saying and having a negative opinion.” Assured that her loved ones could read anything and still love her, she says, “It’s

116 M UST SE E | HEALTH + W ELLN E SS

that safety of having people who love and know you. It allows you to be yourself. If you don’t know where you hold your value, or if it is constantly tied to the opinions of others, it’s a never-ending game. You’re going to be constantly looking for that affirmation. You have no control over your value at that point.”

THE LIGHT, LOVE, AND LAUGHTER BEHIND THE TYLER MERRITT PROJECT

ARTICLE BY KELLIE WALTON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

“I love people, and I believe in people,” says Tyler Merritt, the ultra-positive powerhouse behind The Tyler Merritt Project. “My default with the world and with people is love, and that ends up sparking what I think we need more than anything in the world right now, which is hope. As long as hope is possible, I will continue to promote positivity.” Tyler Merritt’s journey to Nashville is a story we’ve heard before: he grew up in Las Vegas, moved to Northern California with ambitions in theater and acting, then landed in Nashville after starting a band, Broken Flame. “I wanted to be where the best musicians in the world lived. I was lucky enough to play music for years with some of the best musicians that Nashville has to offer in one of our favorite venues in Middle Tennessee,” Merritt shares, recalling his time playing in the nowclosed 12th and Porter. Fast forward to now, and Merritt’s impact has gone far beyond entertaining fans through music. In 2018, Merritt shared a YouTube video through his platform, The Tyler Merritt Project, called “Before You Call.” The monologue beautifully uses Merritt’s own story as a unique perspective on racial inequality. The message was heard near and far, amassing millions of views over the years and landing Merritt on outlets like Jimmy Kimmel, The New York Times, and Sports Illustrated. The Tyler Merritt Project has continued to share messages of hope, equality, positivity, and a little laughter ever since. “The Tyler Merritt Project started out as an idea of what a community could look like if we believed that proximity could make a difference,” Merritt shares. “I wanted to invite individuals from all backgrounds, sexual orientations, and colors and give them a single perspective of my identity as a black man in America. I wanted to do that through laughter, love, humor, grace, and education. I never imagined that The Tyler Merritt Project would grow and blossom into such a huge community, but sometimes, when you build it, they come.”

“I love people, and I believe in people.” We all know that laughter is powerful medicine, an antidote Merritt knows all too well. “We all sometimes laugh when we’re afraid, sometimes when we’re nervous, and then always, when something is genuinely funny,” Merritt shares. “That humor can continue to connect us when used well and properly.” Evolving on the primary message of his viral video, Merritt released his debut book, I Take My Coffee Black: Reflections on Tupac, Musical Theater, Faith, and Being Black in America, in 2021. In it, Merritt details his own upbringing with plenty of humorous flair, while also shedding an important light on the reality of inequalities that exist in the world today. “What I hope with my story is that people will see that their stories matter,” Merritt shares. “My story isn’t wildly significant. I choose to believe that by telling it, it can make a difference. We live in a world where we need each other, and we need each other’s stories.” With a community of followers all hungry for connection, Merritt’s impact has been felt all over the world. He reflects on his impact, sharing, “The amount of messages, both cards and direct messages, that I receive from people worldwide about how they feel more connected because of the time

they spent within the community that we’ve created is wildly meaningful to me. In a million years, I never could’ve dreamt that a 65-year-old white woman from Kentucky would be able to reach out to me and say ‘I feel more connected because of what you have created’ or an 18-year-old student from Baltimore, saying how their life has been changed, and I’ve helped them to dream. Those kinds of things are just things you can never expect when you go to create something.” While his reach may be far and wide, Merritt still calls Nashville home, and has a special affinity for Franklin – nodding to one extra special cantina in particular. “I absolutely love this community,” Merritt shares. “Hopefully, one day, I’ll do a show in this gorgeous theater you all have here in Franklin. It’s one of my favorite spots, but I’d love to bring together the community of Franklin there to share some time together. Oh, and shout out to Mojo’s Tacos… that’s my joint.” So what’s next for The Tyler Merritt Project? Rumor has it, a new book is in the works. “I’ll be honest with you, after I Take My Coffee Black was done, I thought I’d never write anything better than this. It seems that I am proving myself wrong.” TheTylerMerrittProject.com

BUILDING A F O U N DAT I O N F O R YO U N G MEN IN TENNESSEE ADVA N C E CA MP USA

ARTICLE BY JESSICA WAYMAN

130 G IV IN G BAC K | L I FE + C ULT U RE

Advance Camp USA is a program new to Tennessee that offers young men from fatherless homes the opportunity to learn practical skills while building relationships with others and with Christ. Chad Wallen, the founder of Advance Camp USA, is the son of a former correctional officer. Growing up, his father explained to him the extremely high number of men in prisons who came from fatherless homes. “My heart has always been in a place of prevention versus recovery,” says Chad. “That’s where the heart of this came from – a place of prevention for young men coming up in our communities without dads.” The first Advance Camp originated in Oregon as an activity for young men whose mothers were involved in the Single Moms Ministries. Chad and his family later moved to Texas and started Advance Camp USA there. Meanwhile, a mentor and friend of Chad’s from Oregon urged him to bring Advance Camp USA to Tennessee. Two or three months after new programs in Oregon and Florida were in motion, Chad was inspired to open up conversations which eventually led to the first Advance Camp USA in Tennessee. “Doors started blowing open,” says Chad. HopeUC Nashville, a church in Thompson’s Station, reached out and expressed how deeply the mission of Advance Camp resonated in their hearts. Advance Camp USA meets in Thompson’s Station, but it sets out to take the campers wherever they need to go to learn. If they’re going to learn how to work on bikes, they go to bike shops. If it’s cars, they go to auto shops. Fishing, they go to the lake. They teach trades, they mentor young men, and they share biblical scripture at lunchtime. True identity is what they want to show them. So many young men struggle with the idea of being genetically predisposed to the behavior of their fathers. They are inclined to believe they

“I T’S A LL A BOUT CRE ATIN G AWARE N E SS TO FA LL O N TO T H E RI GHT HEA RTS AN D IN TO THE RIG HT HAN D S .”

will naturally follow in their footsteps. Advance Camp pushes back against that and helps them to discover an identity all on their own. If you ask Chad what Advance Camp’s biggest need is, the answer is not money – it’s awareness. Through awareness, everything else finds its way to them. When people hear about Advance Camp and what they offer to young men, sometimes they offer a donation. But just as importantly, they may offer their time as a mentor or their teaching skills as a professional of one of the trades they want the men to learn. An average camp hosts between 12 and 15 young men at a time. Right now, the camps take place once every quarter, but as the program grows, it will hopefully reach a schedule of every other month or even every month. Currently, there are 26 Advance Camps throughout the year, and Chad flies to nearly all of them himself to host the program. The next Advance Camp USA in Thompson’s Station is scheduled for this month, and every three months for the rest of 2024. Registration is available up until the week before camp. Those interested may find more information and register at AdvanceCampUSA.com

Chad Wallen, originally from Oregon, now lives in Granbury, Texas with his wife, Kelsey, and their three daughters. He and his family have fostered 15 children over the course of eight years. His passion is changing the trajectory of the lives of fatherless young men.

“There are many options that can help with weight loss, but Semaglutide seems to perform on a whole new level. In my 21 years of practice, it is, by far, the best weight loss option I have seen. It isn't often we see the FDA approve weight loss medications, but Semaglutide was approved by the FDA in 2021. Since we started offering it as an option for weight loss, we've been able to help hundreds of people achieve their weight loss goals. We are seeing people lose 15-20% of their body weight in just a few months. Semaglutide was first approved for diabetes in 2017, which means we have good long-term data showing that this is a safe and effective medication. And you definitely do not have to be diabetic to take it. It is a weekly injection that can be given in the office or at home. It works by slowing the absorption of food from the gut, making you feel full sooner than normal and for much longer. Semaglutide also mimics a hormone that signals to your brain that you're full, which will help reduce feelings of hunger. With a reduced appetite, it will be easier to follow your diet plan and avoid eating unnecessary snacks or large portion sizes. If you are struggling with what you should be eating, we also offer a diet plan that is easy to follow.”

TIP #1 YOU CAN STILL HAVE A VARIETY OF HEALTHY AND DELICIOUS FOODS BY PLANNING AND PREPPING YOUR MEALS FOR THE WEEK. • Preparing whole meals or dishes ahead of time saves a lot of time for busy people. • Ingredients required for specific meals can be prepped ahead of time to reduce total cooking time in the kitchen. • Having pre-prepared meals on hand can also reduce portion size and help you reach your nutrition and wellness goals. • Choose microwave and freezer safe containers for proper storage, including BPA-free plastic, flexible silicone or glassware containers. • Example: Choose familiar recipes for tacos, chili or spaghetti in the same week to use all your ground beef or turkey. I brown the ground beef and portion it in freezer bags flattened out for space saving freezing and time-saving cooking. • Pre-cut vegetables can be used for fresh ready-to-eat meals that do not require cooking, like salads and sandwiches or as part of a cooked recipe. Include leftovers in meal planning. • I also cut up ripe fresh fruits and freeze them to use in smoothies instead of throwing them out. • Frozen fruits and vegetables often cost less and last longer than fresh ones. They retain high-quality nutrients because they are frozen immediately after being harvested. • Most frozen vegetables have no additives and preservatives, but some may contain added seasonings, salt, sugar or sauces. Avoid added ingredients by paying attention to the label and ingredient list.

• A list helps limit distractions, keep you on budget, restricts unhealthy impulse purchases and reduces multiple trips for forgotten items. • Buy kitchen staples to have on hand to make quick simple meals like canned tomatoes, tuna fish or salmon, corn, your favorite beans and grains such as rice, quinoa, barley, farro and whole grain pasta. • Plan your menus based on grocery store sales and produce that are in season and add beans for plantbased protein. • Buy extra staples when they are on sale, and don’t overlook the bulk bins to buy just the amount you need. • Buy pre-prepped items in the grocery store to further save time or use the salad bar for small servings.

TIP #4 T RY N OT TO G R O C E RY S H O P W H E N YO U A R E H U N G RY. • Everything looks delicious when you are hungry, and this could lead to unnecessary and unhealthy food purchases. • The additional calories may not be needed, and food could be wasted if not eaten.

REPLENISH YOUR BODY’S VITAMINS dysfunction, inflammatory bowel conditions and other things where absorption of nutrients is impaired. A lot of people have poor gut health for a number of reasons these days. They’re on medications that inhibit the absorption of micronutrients, vitamins, and minerals. And so they’re not getting enough nutrients from their food. In these cases, IVs are a great way to get some of those basic nutrients into the body without having to rely on your gut,” Dr. Hutton explains. “Another thing we can do is give special nutrients directly into the bloodstream to help with cellular repair, detoxification, and antioxidants. Vitamin C is one and glutathione is another. Achieving concentrations in the blood that are hard to get directly through oral consumption is a huge benefit of using IVs.” While there are many benefits to the IV vitamin infusions, MVI’s atmosphere makes the clinic an even more beneficial place to be, according to Jennifer. “One thing that sets Mulberry Vitamin Infusions apart is that we only hire RNs to administer IVs. We customize every single treatment for every single patient, every single time. We really try to provide an atmosphere where people can relax and enjoy their time,” Jennifer says. “We have a private room if people just want to be alone. But we also have an open space where we’ve seen that people can build community and schedule their appointments with their friends. I sometimes wonder if there’s just as much benefit to sitting for an hour and just sharing your life, burdens, and joys which happens organically in our environment.” The knowledgeable nurses at MVI are yet another reason the clinic is set apart for its

outstanding work. “The camaraderie is not just among the patients, it’s with the nurses as well. A lot of times patients book their appointments on the schedule of the nurse that they have come to know because there’s a trust factor there,” Jennifer says. “Our nurses are all very personable, so they will sit and talk with people and explain things,” Dr. Hutton describes. “They know a lot of the patients on a personal level, and people find that comforting and appreciate that. Certainly, people can come in and just do their work or go in a room and open a laptop and get things done. It’s pretty flexible in terms of what people need. And MVI has given the nurses the ability to utilize the skills they have in terms of administering IVs and monitoring patients in a very customized way. But it also lets them talk to patients, get to know them, see what their needs are, and establish a real, personal, compassionate, caring relationship with everybody that comes in.” Dr. Hutton explains.
