Welcome to our ladies issue! It’s one of my favorite issues to put together because I love being able to celebrate the success of women. The accomplished ladies on the following pages are just a handful of the many talented and amazing women we are lucky to call our neighbors here in Franklin.
Starting with the one who graces our cover, the incomparable Miranda Lambert. As if her music wasn’t enough to showcase her incredible talents, she’s releasing a cookbook later this month that is a nostalgic ode to her loving upbringing.
In this issue, we also talk to blogger and influencer Mary Lawless Lee of Happily Grey. The former ICU nurse and mother of three shares a little bit about her life, her journey and her love of fashion.

Lifestyle blogger Dawn Burns calls Franklin home, where she is a mother of two and wife to husband, Seth. Dawn has always had a growing love for community and an even stronger passion for families traveling to her beloved city. Dr. Eliza Gilbert is originally from Cadiz, KY and earned a Bachelor of Science at Murray State University with cum laude honors. She continued her professional studies at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry where she earned her DMD with magna cum laude honors. Dr. Gilbert has had private practice experience in Tennessee, Indiana, and her home state of Kentucky. Y'All Eat Yet? is a collection of recipes that mix childhood memories with traditions and lots of love around the family table. Lambert says she owes it all to the two generations of women who raised her, her Nonny Wanda Louise and her momma Beverly June. Those influential ladies are not only the inspiration behind this cookbook but also for her Wanda June home goods collection available exclusively at Walmart that launched just last summer. We got to talk with Miranda about her new book, her home accessories line and some of her favorite childhood memories.
AT WHAT POINT IN YOUR LIFE DID YOU REALIZE YOU HAD A SPECIAL CHILDHOOD AND WANTED TO WRITE ABOUT IT TO SHARE WITH OTHERS?
ML: I think I realized it early on, actually. I wrote my first song at 14 and it was about growing up in our small town of Lindale, Texas. My childhood has shown up in my music through the years – and now a lot of those memories are in the book!
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO PUT THIS BOOK TOGETHER FROM CONCEPTION? (IE ROUNDING UP THE RECIPES, OLD FAMILY PHOTOS, ETC)
ML: It’s been almost three years of work to get all the stories and recipes down on paper and make it all make sense. I am excited for my fans to see and read it.
YOU TALK A LOT ABOUT FEMALE BONDING IN THE BOOK. WHAT'S ONE WAY YOU LIKE TO GET TOGETHER WITH YOUR GIRLFRIENDS?
ML: We revolve almost every gathering around cocktails and snacks. Our best memories are about just being together, no matter what we are doing or where we are. We always bring the fun.
I LOVE YOUR TRIBE. YOUR INTROS TO THEM SOUND LIKE YOU'VE GOT SOME WONDERFUL PEOPLE AROUND YOU. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A DISCONNECTED WOMAN TODAY WHO IS STILL LOOKING TO FIND HER TRIBE?
ML: Find people that lift you up, but also tell you the truth. A group of friends that loves you through ups and downs is so special, and I’m very thankful to have them.
I'M SURE IT'S HARD TO CHOOSE, BUT DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE NONNY RECIPE OTHER THAN HER FAMOUS COOKIES? ONE THAT TRULY TAKES YOU BACK TO YOUR CHILDHOOD?
ML: Her dressing is a family staple for us. Since she passed, we have been trying to get it right, but we never can do it quite like her. She used her magic touch.
YOU SAY YOU LIKE EATING MORE THAN COOKING, BUT TELL US, IS THERE ANYTHING YOU'VE MASTERED IN THE KITCHEN THAT YOU TRULY ENJOY PUTTING TOGETHER?
ML: I make taco soup a lot. It’s quick and easy and goes a long way for gatherings or parties. I also love making peanut butter cookies. Super easy and delish.
THE WANDA JUNE KITCHENWARE IS KINDA RETRO 70'S. WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND IT?
ML: A lot of my grandmother’s and mom’s old dishes that have been passed down have a retro feel, so we wanted to bring that out in Wanda June. I feel like retro never goes out of style – and it’s super fun.
YOU'RE SO BUSY (MUSIC, TOURING, WRITING, PINK PISTOL, WINERY, MUTTNATION) - WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND?
ML: I have a farm about an hour from Nashville which is usually the place I go to recharge. All of my animals and airstreams are there, and I really just feel so balanced and peaceful after a few days in the country. Our friends come hang out there as well, so it’s just a cool, chill vibe.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU? GOT ANYTHING UP YOUR SLEEVE?
ML: I always have something up my sleeve! I’ve been writing music a ton, so that’s been fun, and I am about to kick off another leg of the Velvet Rodeo residency in Vegas. I’ve been loving that, so I’m pumped! MirandaLambert.com

WHY SHOULD PARENTS OF TEENAGE DRIVERS CONSIDER SHELLNUT INSURANCE?

As a music producer, Chris Erlanson’s job was to listen to artists talk about their dreams and vision, then help them achieve them. That’s not too far removed from his role as the owner of Tennessee Flight Training (TFT).
“When people walk through the door, they have a dream. They want to do something bigger than themselves and that’s what aviation is,” says Erlanson. “God did not intend for us to fly. But in an airplane, if you want to climb, you will climb. If you want to come back to earth, you will come back to earth. Airplanes are really just extensions of our dreams."
Erlanson never aspired to be an aviation professional while he was working for a record label and a management company. Flying was just something to do, an escape while he was away from the music business. He didn’t realize what it would turn into until he acquired what was then Nashville Flight Training in 2014. “I bought the flight school as a side
investment. It was never intended to be my main vocation,” says Erlanson. “But the more I became involved in aviation, the more I enjoyed it. It gives me great joy, watching kids come in not knowing what a propeller is and a few years later they’re working for an airline. It’s as if I live vicariously through them, seeing them go from knowing nothing to becoming aviation experts.”
Today, Tennessee Flight Training has operations at Nashville International Airport (BNA) and Maury County Regional Airport (MRC). Between the two fields, it serves hundreds of students ranging from aspiring aviators to experienced pilots who are training for advanced certifications. But even the absolute beginner goes airborne at the first lesson. “We try to make sure that every first lesson is actually in the airplane,” says Erlanson. “The reason is that you weren’t drawn to aviation because you wanted to learn math or formulae. You’re going to learn
about legal and regulatory and math and physics. But we want to keep it fun, too, so every opportunity you have to be in the plane, you’ll be in it with your hands on the controls.”
Students also flock to TFT because aviation jobs pay well and there is a nationwide pilot shortage numbering in the tens of thousands. This explains why students come from all walks of life, including a growing number of aspiring female aviators. Erlanson has assembled a staff of 40 that includes 26 certified flight instructors, mechanics, regulatory experts and administrative personnel. With 13 aircraft of various performance levels and an FAA-certified simulator at each airport, students have access to all the equipment they need whether they’re pursuing a pilot license or seeking to become an Airport Transport Pilot, a designation required to fly for a commercial airline.
Erlanson says that TFT has a number of advantages compared to flight schools that are housed in university settings. “One of our strengths is that we provide a lot of flexibility,” he says. “Some students want to train twice a day, six days a week. Others want to train only once or twice a week. We’re able to accommodate all of them. It’s not so much the lessons as it is the proficiency. The FAA has strict guidelines in terms of minimum proficiencies and technical skills.”
That aligns with something else that’s inherent to flight training that Erlanson says cannot be compromised. “Aviation is a meritocracy,” he says. “If you come to me with a million dollars, I can’t sell you a license. A license cannot be purchased online with a couple of clicks. It has to be earned.” And in Middle Tennessee, aspiring pilots are earning their wings at Tennessee Flight Training. TnFlightTraining.com

What has surprised me the most is that some dreams come true right away and some others take time and can come true in a very unexpected way. My life is completely different from what I pictured when I was young but, surprisingly, every dream I had has been accomplished so far.
ARE YOU A CITY MOUSE OR A COUNTRY MOUSE? WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT LIVING WHERE WE DO?
I am definitely a country mouse. I love nature. Being from another country, I can’t appreciate more how beautiful Nashville is. It’s so green. There are places around that can take your breath away. I think we are surrounded by our own little sanctuary.

Whatever troubles or problems you have in your life, you don’t have to look far to see that someone else’s problems are way worse. I once had a sick family member I was concerned about. Things were looking bleak, and while driving that person to the hospital, I got a call from someone whose situation was way worse. I thought, 'My situation is bad, but theirs is terrible.' I think about that whenever I hit a hard time. My troubles might be bad, but many others are having an even harder time. I want to help people who are in tough situations however I can.
WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT SURPRISED YOU WHEN YOU SET OUT TO FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS?
The two different attitudes I encountered, depending on the person. Some people were accepting of me being a female firefighter and others were not. I had never experienced anything like that, but I kept doing my best and I guess over time I won them over. There are probably still some who have reservations about a fire lieutenant being female. I don’t dwell on it. I just do my best.

Country is all I’ve ever known! I’ve lived within three miles of the same spot my whole life. I have relatives that have been here since before it was a county. I do like it here, and I don’t know any different.

I moved to this country from Bejar, Salamanca, Spain without knowing anyone. Early in my career, I worked for companies that folded or who had to let me go, and I surprised myself with my resilience. I had to figure out how to re-invent myself, how to keep striving and go on, despite the setbacks I’ve inevitably experienced. I was able to build a community and relationships in a new culture. I’m glad I was able to do that so well and keep moving forward.

A little bit of both. I was born in the countryside, so I gravitate towards nature to find balance and find myself. I also love what cities have to offer, the culture, music, entertainment, sports. I’ve lived in six U.S. cities: Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York, Portland, Los Angeles and Nashville. I love living in Tennessee. The people are friendly, it’s a great sports community and a wonderful place to raise our family.

I was surprised the first time I took a leadership position in my children’s elementary school PTA. I followed them to school one day and seldom left. Schools desperately needed help in those days. I built a community of volunteers with programs. When asked by the principal how and why I did so much, I said, "God raised my hand.” I didn't know how to run PTA programs but I learned! I thought I was shy… hardly.

I grew up in a small community in Clearwater, Florida. After several moves with my husband, Garry, work moved us to Williamson County. While I love and miss the gulf waters of Florida, I learned to love four seasons, hills and the glory of the landscape that Tennessee has to offer. Tennessee nature inspires my life and my art.

Living where we do is the best of both worlds. We live two miles from downtown Franklin, and our subdivision backs up to the Harpeth River, so there are huge fields behind our house that are floodplains. No houses can ever be built back there. There are paths, trails, woods, the river, and it feels like the country but we are close to everything. I have to add that I worked in downtown Nashville for 17 years and I loved, loved, loved the fast pace of the city. So I’m not sure what “mouse” I am.

Calvert: If you think you can't accomplish something prove yourself wrong. This is something I tell myself as I’m not a risk taker, and opening this business was a huge undertaking; I was so nervous going into it. If it wasn't for Brenna, my sister, co-owner and best friend, giving me confidence and support, I might not have started this business. I’m so glad I did and I try to incorporate that motto into many things in my life.
Brenna: As a partial pessimist, I’ve never been attracted to quotes or motivational posters. The standard 'don't give up' has helped me achieve my goals. You can fall, you can stumble, or it can take longer than you hoped for. Just keep pushing and adjust as needed.

From our charming historic district to the stunning countryside, there’s always something to do while being surrounded by the nicest people. People are so willing to help and are passionate and invested in our town. The amenities of Nashville are just up the road but coming home to Main Street is so special. I wouldn’t change it for the world.
Specifically for downtown Franklin, I wish there was a train service like the Music City Star for public transit between Franklin and Nashville. I understand this is challenging and expensive, but it would make such a difference for local small businesses that depend on visitors being able to easily access our shops, restaurants and venues. It would also lessen the traffic impact downtown. The easier we make it for people to visit, the more will come, and this benefits everyone in the long run.

1. Over medium heat on a grill, cover and cook sausages 10-12 minutes. Turn occasionally while cooking.

• 3 tablespoons butter
• ¼ cup balsamic vinegar

1. Slice all vegetables into ½” strips. Coat a large skillet with olive oil over medium-high heat. Add butter.
2. Add and sauté vegetables over medium heat for about 10 minutes until tender and beginning to brown.
3. Stir in balsamic vinegar. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve with sausage dogs.

INGREDIENTS:
• 8 slices bacon, chopped into 1” pieces
• butter
• 1 sweet onion, chopped
• 2 garlic cloves, minced
• 3 cups fresh or frozen corn
• 3 medium zucchini, quartered and sliced ½” thick
• 2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme, divided
• ½ teaspoon salt
• 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
• ¼ teaspoon sugar
• 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
• 1 cup freshly grated (not pre-grated) parmesan cheese
DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat oven to 350º. Cook bacon pieces in a large cast iron skillet. Reserve 2 tablespoons of pan drippings in the skillet and drain bacon on paper towels.
2. Over medium heat, add 2 tablespoons of butter to pan. Sauté onion 3-4 minutes or until tender. Add garlic, 1 tablespoon of butter, corn and zucchini.
3. Cook over medium heat 6-8 minutes until zucchini is tender crisp. Add 1 tablespoon of the thyme, salt, cayenne pepper, and sugar.
4. Stir in 1 cup of the mozzarella and the parmesan cheese.
5. Remove skillet from heat. Stir in half of the bacon pieces. Sprinkle top with remaining ½ cup mozzarella cheese and remaining bacon pieces.
6. Bake 10-15 minutes to melt and slightly brown cheese.
7. Remove and sprinkle top with remaining thyme.
8. Serve warm in cast iron skillet.
YIELD: Batch makes 2 quarts
• 2 pounds seedless watermelon cubes
• 1/3 cup simple syrup
• 1 cup watermelon schnapps
• 16 ounces frozen limeade concentrate, thawed
• 32 ounces lime beer, chilled
• Juice of 1 lime
• Ice for serving
• Lime wedges for garnish
1. In a blender, puree watermelon cubes. Pour into a 2-quart pitcher.
2. Add the simple syrup, watermelon schnapps, and limeade concentrate. Stir well.
3. Pour in the lime beer and fresh lime juice, gently stirring to blend.

True pioneers need a vision, determination, and the courage to challenge the status quo. Dr. Somi Javaid and Komel Caruso are no exception. This dynamic sister team is on a mission to change the women’s healthcare landscape.
Born and raised in Ohio, Somi and Komel did not envision that, one day, they would serve a fundamental role in the women’s healthcare revolution. Although Somi had always been interested in the field of medicine, it wasn’t until she was a pre-medical student at Northwestern University and a major family health scare solidified her decision. At the age of 45, her mother was rushed to a hospital for emergency quadruple bypass surgery. “Despite her constant plea for help in the days leading up to her surgery, my mother was told her chest pain, left arm pain, and shortness of breath were due to anxiety and caffeine consumption. No one listened to her as she described the classic symptoms of heart disease. We lost valuable time with my mother due to the repeated delays in her diagnosis,” notes Somi. From that point, Somi made it her life’s mission to advocate for women. She became an OBGYN, and later, a specialist in menopause and sexual healthcare.
As an OBGYN, Somi worked long and grueling hours. Typically, each patient appointment was slotted for 15 minutes, not nearly enough time to listen to concerns and offer comprehensive care. Frustrated with the broken healthcare system, Somi decided it was time for a change. She wrote up a business plan for a healthcare center focused on women’s needs and the first HerMD opened in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2015.

Somi and Komel noticed that once women learned of the unique HerMD model, which includes 20 to 60-minute appointments, they were willing to drive, even from another state, for an appointment. HerMD provides a “one-stop-shop” for patients seeking personalized care under one roof. In addition to specialized women’s healthcare, HerMD locations are equipped with phlebotomy, surgical, and imaging services. To top it off, HerMD offers medical aesthetics services, because many women who struggle with healthcare issues also struggle with aesthetic issues. HerMD prides itself on accessibility. “We accept most major insurance plans, so it makes the care affordable,” Caruso adds.
Somi and Komel decided to bring the HerMD model to women nationwide. Kathy Lai, joined them as one of the three co-founders of HerMD and provides financial and strategic expertise to the growing business. HerMD expanded to Crescent Springs, Kentucky in 2021 and although the odds were stacked against them being women and minorities, in 2022, the co-founders were able to fundraise $10 million for additional expansion efforts. HerMD has since opened locations right here in Franklin and in Carmel, Indiana. Another location is slated to open in New Jersey this summer.
In support of its goal to educate, empower and advocate for women, HerMD offers free educational events and multimedia resources, such as the HerMD podcast, HerVoice. Routine community events also occur at each HerMD market location. “There is a big void to be filled,” Somi says. “Only 20 percent of OBGYNs are trained in sexual health and menopause.” Komel further advises women to “find their tribe.” She encourages women to talk more about their healthcare issues and learn from one another. HerMD’s founders say they hope they can help eliminate gender disparity in healthcare, as well as the stigma surrounding women’s personal healthcare needs and topics historically considered “taboo.” HerMD.com
If you’ve ever had to choose a real estate agent, you might find yourself wishing there was one in the family. B&G Properties is the next best thing. Her lyrics are deep and meaningful, and many of the words come from the despair and challenges she’s experienced. Katy Nichole was born with congenital scoliosis, and at the age of 15, had to have surgery to try to correct it. It left her in pain every single day which led to a deep depression and debilitating anxiety.
Another operation, along with her strong faith, brought Katy Nichole out of the darkness. “After the second back surgery, I had an encounter with the Lord and it was really like the light had come back into my life.”
She adds, “I know pain, I know struggle, and I know the feeling of hopelessness, so when I write songs, I write to reach the person who thinks that hope is gone and who maybe is in the middle of what I've been through. I want to make them feel like they're not alone in their struggles, whether it's me reminding them or the Lord speaking through my songs.”
Katy Nichole grew up singing in church choirs and always had an interest in music and being on stage. Her Grandma Jan, who is also a
singer, asked her to perform "Amazing Grace" with her one day. “I have a video of us singing together – it’s the sweetest thing,” she says. “She always encouraged me to sing.”
In 2020, on a whim, she posted herself singing one of her songs, "In Jesus Name (God of Possible)," on TikTok. She never could have foreseen what was about to happen. A few hours after posting, the video had over one million views.
In 2022, the song became the biggest hit of the decade on the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart and stayed there for a record-breaking 20 weeks. Katy Nichole was also nominated for an American Music Award, co-hosted and performed on the GMA Dove Awards Pre-Telecast and saw another one of her songs, "God Is In This Story," hit number one as well last year.
In February, she launched her full-length debut album, Jesus Changed My Life, and has become one of Christian music’s fastest-rising artists. She is also set to release her third radio single, “Hold On.”
Her family, she says, gave her a solid foundation and the tools to have a relationship with the Lord. It’s this foundation and faith she relies on today to manage her meteoric rise to fame.

Last year, she toured venues across the country with Jeremy Camp, Matthew West and other Christian musicians on the K-LOVE Christmas Tour. “It's pretty surreal,” she says. “I’ve been able to meet the people who I’ve looked up
to for so long and I've made some friends. I’m really grateful for the way that I've been welcomed into a community of really good people.” This March, she began a 30-city tour.

If you spend enough time around car dealerships, like I do, you start to get a sense of the normal career path that people take in the world of car sales. There’s no set standard, of course, but across the board the hours are long, the work is tough and climbing the “corporate ladder” takes time. A lot of time. For Maryam Malikyar, the new General Manager at Mercedes-Benz of Nashville, her story is a bit different. Maryam is new to Nashville, fresh from running a top-performing import store in Fairfax, Virginia and she’s one of those rare people you just can’t help but like immediately. Enthusiastic, eager to laugh and genuinely interested in what you have to say.
Maryam’s meteoric ascent through the ranks of the car business started with a chance encounter. A woman who worked in management at a Chrysler Jeep and Dodge store met Maryam, spotted her potential,
and asked her if she’d ever thought about a career in the car business. The woman who would eventually become her mentor was persistent and reached out repeatedly over a few months to see if there was any interest. Maryam was young and at a bit of a crossroads in life and knowing nothing about cars, had never considered the automotive industry. She eventually took a leap, and like everyone else, she began in sales but after only six months transitioned into the finance office, filling in for those on their day off or on vacation. She jumped between a handful of dealerships within a dealer group, gaining insight and experience across the board with a variety of car brands.
I think we should take a moment to pause and reflect on the transition from sales to the finance office in only six months. Selling cars is hard - really hard, especially at the entry level. The turnover rate is extraordinary,
usually between 30 to 40 percent and sometimes higher. If you’re a superstar, they’ll start grooming you for finance after you’ve spent a year proving you can not only swim with the sharks and survive, but thrive. Some dealerships will wait even longer than a year, so if you’re good enough to transition in only six months, you’re already in the top one percent.
After cutting her teeth in finance for a year and a half, Maryam decided to treat herself to a brand new import sports car. While going through the buying process, they found out she worked in the car business, spotted her potential and professionalism and offered her a job. When you and I go to buy a car, we leave with some paperwork and a monthly payment. Maryam left that day with a new car and a promotion.
After 13 years of successful leadership, Maryam is now the General Manager at Mercedes-Benz of Nashville and ready to bring her enthusiasm and experience to Music City. I concluded my conversation with Maryam by asking her what advice she would have if she met a young woman who was at a crossroads in life, knew nothing about cars but had obvious potential.
“Are you good at your job? Do you care about your customers? Are you a hard worker? Are you good for culture? Are you a good fit for the team? Are you intimidated? If so, don’t be.”
She went on to say that aside from her mentor she didn’t have many women to look up to in upper management when she first started her career, “These [management] jobs are achievable. Seeing is believing. You just have to go get it.”

According to Dr. Barton, the biggest goals for most moms-to-be that visit the office are to be more comfortable during their pregnancy and to have a quick labor. “We’ve done studies throughout multiple pregnant patients that report their labors – even first-time moms – are anywhere from eight hours or less,” she says.

ADVENTURES WITH A HOUSE HUBBY
ARTICLE BY KIMBERLY BLAKERI was one of those lucky women whose husband helped around the house. But I still remember trying to convince him to assist the first few years of our marriage when the kids were little, and I was working full-time.
I became so desperate, one day I calculated on paper the total time I expended daily for every little task. Changing diapers – forty-five minutes; laundry - an hour; picking up the house - two hours twenty minutes; errands – an hour and a half; feeding our newborn - three hours; and so on. By the time I compiled the list, I was exhausted just thinking about it. But my list brought about a seemingly miraculous change.
Suddenly, my couch potato was buying groceries, folding clothes, and many other household duties. He was becoming the perfect Mr. Mom.
Of course, I had no clue what I was getting into. Our grocery bill quickly doubled; every meal was a full-blown buffet. My five-year-old daughter was soon asking why my shirts were hanging in her closet. As for the kitchen, it was unrecognizable. I now had my very own Chef De' la Clutz.
One day upon entering the kitchen, I instantly froze from the cyclone that had hit. The entire room was coated with dry pancake mix as if the box had exploded. Immobilized from the sight, I discovered the secrets to my husband's gourmet meals. He’d grab the handle of the frying pan, and with a quick upward jerk, 10 sausages were doing acrobats through the air as their oily perspiration splattered the kitchen walls.
Next, preparing the pancakes, I nearly mistook my husband for my five-year-old learning to pour as batter spilled over the edges of the skillet. I continued to watch in awe, finally catching a breath of relief as he began to clean up.
The relief, however, was only temporary. He grabbed the dishcloth, ran it under cold water, and began mopping the counter; I guess his mother never taught him to ring out the dishcloth. As he sloshed the water around the counter, it ran down the cabinets. Not to worry though, our brand new carpet would absorb the overflow.
I could watch no more. I finally offered my help to finish cleaning the mess, and my hubby eagerly obliged. He then rinsed his hands under the faucet and shook them over the soon-to-beeaten meal. I suppose it would have been too much to ask him to use one of the seven dishtowels he had strewn about the kitchen.
As he left the wreckage, I wiped the perspiration from my forehead. Following dinner, I spent no less than an hour cleaning the disaster zone. This led to more calculations. If I had prepared the meal, it would have taken 30 minutes and the cleaning another 15. I’d have completed the task in a record time of 45 minutes. How was it possible to have enlisted his help and then have to spend more time in the kitchen?
Luckily, he did finally catch on. Or maybe I just didn’t allow him to do quite as much while closing my eyes to the rest. Still, I tried to keep in mind the sincerity behind his helpfulness is what mattered most. By the time our kids were grown, he did have the housework techniques skillfully mastered.
So if you're struggling to get your husband's help around the house, give my calculation method a shot. Once he begins to pitch in, just take plenty of deep breaths. Though it may take a while to train him, the eventual reward is worth the agony and wait.

In 2020, aesthetic appointments with Jessica McNeil, FNP-C, were on Taya Reeves’ lengthy pre-wedding to-do list for both herself and her mom.
“My mom was very apprehensive,” Taya recalls, noting her hesitation about receiving any aesthetic treatments. “Jess went over her aesthetic treatment plan and gave us peace of mind. I always really appreciate that my mom was so comfortable and finally did something she’d been wanting to do forever.”
Prior to entering the field of aesthetics, Jess came from a robust medical background, working in the Vanderbilt emergency department, the cardiac cath lab and even as an internal medicine provider in West Tennessee. Taya continued her appointments with Jess, and the pair forged a friendship that would lead to Taya accepting a part-time position following the reduction of work in the music industry during the pandemic. Ultimately, Jess and Taya decided to launch their joint brand in downtown Franklin, The Aesthetic Parlour.
“We’re not just focused on the business part, aesthetics is actually a specialty of medicine,” Jess adds. “During a consultation, we sit down and discuss their past medical history, such as medical conditions, surgical history, allergies, daily prescribed medication, as well as over-the-counter medications. This information is so important for me to know so I can provide them with safe care.”
The medical requirements for injectors vary from state to state, but having a provider that understands the full scope of healthcare, medications, allergies, and beyond, is imperative when researching options. This was learned by Taya firsthand following her mother’s initial consultation and the attention to medical history beyond aesthetics and further piqued her interest in continuing education.

The Happily Grey Lifestyle and Fashion Blogger Shares Her Passion
Mary Lawless Lee dedicates her life to living creatively. Recognizing her penchant for originality and ingenuity, a career as an ICU nurse eventually gave way to a career as a creator. "I was never in this pursuit of 'I need to change careers' or 'I'm looking for a different path.' My love for writing is what really started my journey and creating my own blog as a creative outlet. Because I only worked three days a week as a nurse, I started writing on my off days. And I paid my friend $50 to create a website. I named it Happily Grey. This was {11 years ago} before blogging was a thing, Instagram and Pinterest had just launched, and it was this new idea. But really that was not where my motivation was at all. It was just my love for writing. And I also loved fashion. So I was writing about fashion as a creative outlet, something that kind of took the edge off of having a job in critical care and the intensity around it."
Lee continues, "What started as an organic creative outlook, evolved into a full-time strategic lifestyle brand. And as my life unfolded new chapters, I entered new genres of content and started writing about those different types of content - travel, interiors, skincare, beauty, and now most recently, mom and baby. And the transition from really finally quitting nursing and doing this full-time was hard and slow for me. My manager at Vanderbilt called me and was basically the one that was like, 'Hey, I think you need to quit and go do what you're doing.'"
It wasn't an easy decision for Lee, but she says, "That was the push that I needed because I always loved patient care and I still have a deep love for it and respect for it. So it was not an overnight process. There was an evolution to it for sure. And the social blogger influencer space was very unknown. My parents
were like, 'What are you doing? We paid for a degree.'"
Money well spent. While Lee's career may not be in the degree her parents paid for, there is no doubt that she's thriving. In addition to her success as an influencer and fashion mogul, she launched her own skincare line, Nemah, with her husband, Madison, and released her first book last November, Happily Grey: Stories, Souvenirs, and Everyday Wonders from the
Lee says, "Happily Grey is half memoir, half coffee table book. There are a lot of design aspects in it because I feel like my brand is so rooted in design, but it also is very intimate. Actually, the storyline of it was more intimate than what I even set out to do. It encompasses 12 short stories, and they're all about the lessons that I've learned as a little girl, as a business owner, as a mother, and as a wife. Some are funny,
some are really hard to read through, but it's really my heart and soul all in one."
The same can be said of the Lees' skincare line, Nemah. "When I became a mother, the light bulb went off. It was really clear to me, especially coming from a background of nursing and taking care of people, and patient care being such a passion of mine, when I became a mother, I was looking for these high-quality, beautifully-designed integrity products, and I couldn't get my hands on them. And then I started having the same conversation with my online community, asking other mothers, 'What are you using that's clean, that's safe, that's effective?" And I could not believe the disparity in the category. And so that was really where the idea was born because I wanted to be able to apply my science background and my patient care background to this digital world. We set out two years ago, working with a manufacturer in Europe, in Spain, and we started developing the formulas and the products that I knew didn't exist. And that started with the stretch cream." Lee's 16-month-old daughter at the time, Navy, couldn't say 'mama,' so she called Lee 'nemah.' She googled it and learned nemah means God's gift in Arabic. "I was like 'There we go. It was a chills moment for sure."
Which begs the question, where did the Happily Grey name come from? Lee says, "A lot of people think that it means that I love muted colors only,
or it's a nod to aging." But Lee explains, "I grew up in a very small town, very conservative, and very appreciative for the morals and values that I grew up with. As a little girl, I felt a lot, I took on a lot, and I kind of created this life for me that was black or white. Life had to be this way or that way. And there wasn't any operating outside these lines or these boxes. But as I got older, I realized that life doesn't always make sense, and things don't always end the way we think they should. I realized during that time that life is actually really gray. And I found relief in that. I found this comfort and safety knowing that it didn't have to always be this or that. And I don't always have to make sense of it, or I don't always have to figure it out. And so this gray area can be a period of learning and a period of creativity. That's where I found my happy space and where I felt the most creative. So that's why I decided to name my blog and my book, Happily Grey."
How does this busy mother of three balance it all? "It's really the women that I work with. I have a team of eight other people, and there's just no way I could do anything of what I do if it wasn't for them. And not just the physical aspect, but the emotional support and the mental support. I'm very lucky, because we have a great group of women that love each other, are motivated and inspired, and we all listen to each other. That's a huge part of it. In 2017, Sara Young tapped into a passion she’d held since childhood, and nearly six years later, she’s behind a monthly event that is redefining the furniture shopping experience.
“The aesthetics, the home decor, the beautiful side of what we do has been a passion of mine since I was young,” Sara shares. “I rearranged my room all the time and wanted things to look nice. “For a customer coming out, they can expect a high energy furniture shopping experience where people start lining up pretty early, especially in Nashville.” Sara adds, “It’s an exciting monthly event where they can shop and take everything home that day!” Sara Sells also offers local delivery and alternate pick-up days.
To add to the excitement of customers' impending shopping spree, Sara Sells hosts coffee and food vendors onsite before doors open and during the event. On any given month, up to 1,500 shoppers come through the warehouse.

We strive to operate with open hands and help meet the needs of the communities we’re in,” Sara shares. “It’s such a big part of what we do.”
With philanthropy always at the core, Sara Sells looks toward the future in an effort to continue helping consumers find affordable, beautiful pieces and giving back to the community wherever possible. Moving from her garage to 30,000 square-foot warehouses in three cities in just six years, it’s no wonder expansion is looming. “Growth is always on the horizon,” Sara teases. “We are currently scouting our fourth location and will be launching our Trade Program within the next few months.” The Trade Program will better support designers, builders and other professionals in the space by offering easier access and more opportunities to procure pieces beyond the monthly warehouse sale.

Nothing says spring like the aroma of fresh cut herbs in a crisp, cold, cocktail. With warmer weather finally here, growing herbs at home can transform your cocktail hour and add a fresh kick to your springtime favorites.
Growing herbs is incredibly easy and can be done in a variety of ways- from a container in a window, to a planter box in the yard. With a container or garden full of fresh herbs, you will be ready to take your cocktails up a notch.
Basil is a bright herb that is easy to grow and perfect for cocktails. Make sure and harvest immediately before mixing drinks and take leaves from the top to ensure a continual harvest. Fresh muddled basil leaves lend a crispness to the Gin Basil Cucumber cocktail.
Sage is easy to grow and does well in containers. The leaves add an earthy freshness to a refreshing cherry infused Bourbon.
Mint is also easy to grow, but give it lots of room, as it likes to spread out and is virtually indestructible in the garden. Mint is a versatile herb but is especially lovely in the Rhubarb Mint Mojito.
Try recreating these refreshing cocktails with herbs grown at home and take your cocktail game to new heights!

• 0.75 oz. apple brandy or apple jack brandy
• Place over an ice ball in an old fashion glass
• Top with ginger beer and garnish with Bordeaux cherries and leaf of sage
• 2 oz. white rum
• 1 oz. rhubarb puree (2 cups rhubarb, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup water)
• 0.5 oz. fresh lime juice
• 8-10 fresh mint leaves
• soda water
• lemon lime soda
• ice
• Muddle mint, lime juice, and rhubarb puree in a glass or small cocktail shaker
• Once muddled, add the white rum and ice
• Top with large cocktail shaker and shake for a few seconds
• Remove large shaker and pour everything into a glass
• Top with more ice
• Add soda water and lemon-lime soda (equal parts to your liking)
• Garnish with mint leaf and lime wheel
• 2-3 fresh basil leaves
• 0.5 oz. fresh lime juice
• 0.25 oz. simple syrup
• 2-3 cucumber slices
• 2 oz. gin
• tonic water
• Muddle basil, lime juice, simple syrup and cucumber slices together in a small cocktail shaker
• Add gin and ice to cocktail shaker
• Shake well
• Strain over an ice ball
• Top with tonic water and garnish with basil leaf and a cucumber slice

Spring is here! We compiled a list of flowers that - depending on your planting zone - can be planted in the season.
Plumbago
Has beautiful dark blue or white flowers on a large shrub of 3 to 5 feet. This tends to freeze down in winter and comes back from roots in the spring.
Hibiscus
The tropical variety will not survive the winters so move those pots inside. The plant can get up to 5 feet tall and there are many different colors and varieties. The perennial varieties will freeze to the ground but come back in the spring. The variety Moy Grande is known as the dinner plate hibiscus. The Texas star hibiscus has beautiful flowers in red or white.
Bougainvillea
These colorful plants can be planted in baskets and pots, not in water-logged or low areas where water might collect. They will grow best when given enough space to spread out, and should be planted in an area that will allow them a minimum of 5-6 hours of sunlight every day. Colors include orange, pink, purple, white, red, tangerine and fuschia to name a few.
Purslane
This is great in baskets for trailing leaves with lots of colors. The bees love it!
This 3 to 4-foot bush is a must for monarch lovers. Monarchs feed on the leaves before making their cocoons. It has beautiful orange and yellow flowers.
This is a great hot weather plant that comes in many colors and varieties. Trailing varieties only get about 1 foot tall but can get 3 to 4 feet wide. There are bush varieties that get 4 feet tall and dwarf bushes only get about 2 feet tall. It comes in yellows, purples, reds, oranges, pinks, fuschia, and many others.
This fuzzy light blue flower is a butterfly favorite.
This is another bee and butterfly favorite that grows about 10 to 12 inches tall. There is a graffiti variety in different colors that works in beds or pots.
This plant comes in upright or trailing varieties. There are many colors to choose from: lavender, white with a red center, peach, white and red pink to strawberry.
Sages
There are many varieties of sage. The Texas sage is a shrub that has beautiful lavender flowers - a favorite for bees. They usually bloom around the time it rains. Henry Duelberg variety is a smaller bush 18 to 20 inches tall with blue stalks of blooms. Russian Sage is a tall silver lacey foliage with light blue flower spikes and grows to 4 feet tall. Deer tend to stay away from most of the sages.
